Phezulu safari park is an exciting tourism venue, situated in botha’s hill, only 35 km’s from central durban..

 This picturesque park has magnificent views of the world-famous Valley of a 1000 Hills.

At Phezulu village, the world famous Gasa clan has over the last 30 years, allowed visitors to Phezulu the opportunity to savour the taste and feel the rhythm of Africa. Visitors are taken into traditional beehive shaped thatched huts, where the various artefacts, beliefs and rituals are explained.

Free entry to Phezulu Safari Park includes: two restaurants, kids play area, view, shield factory and two curio shops. Charged activities are Reptile Park, Cultural Village and Zulu dance show and game drive into our beautiful private game reserve. We have 2 restaurants providing a variety of meals from Crocodile to Burgers. Our accommodation is made up of a lodge and three self catering Chalets with a view of the valleys. We are the perfect venue for Weddings, Conferences, Work Functions, Kids Birthday Parties, Team Building. Phezulu Safari Park is only 35 minutes from Durban situated between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in the Valley of 1000 Hills. Phezulu has been providing entertainment to the local and foreign tourist industry in the Valley of 1000 Hills for the last 25 years. This jewel of Durban has humble beginnings a small Zulu village which has transformed into a world famous destination. Phezulu Safari Park is about having unique experiences, creating memories and refreshing ones soul. Whilst only 35 minutes from Durban you escape completely from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Phezulu Reptile Park

The reptile park has been upgraded and now includes a brand new exotic snake collection and new baby alligators to our already elaborate indigenous snake and Nile crocodile collection. Come and face your fears by handling a harmless brown house snake, or holding our 40kg Burmese Python “Cleo” or if you are rally brave try our Fear Factor Challenge where you can “enjoy” a meal inside one of our crocodile enclosures.

Phezulu Zulu Village and Dance Show

Our Zulu village has been the mainstay of Phezulu Safari Park. The Gasa family have been entertaining our guests for years with their traditional dance shows demonstrating their skills with grace, agility and humour. The Zulu village tour also teaches you about the culture and traditions of Zulu living and feel free to visit our Zulu Shield and Spear factory. Zulu village tours and dance shows are at 10:00, 11:30, 14:00 and 15:30.

Phezulu Game Reserve

Our game park has the friendliest Giraffe in the world. Visitors are driven into the Historical Valley of 1000 hills by our guides in open 4×4 game vehicles which lends itself to the beautiful views of the area. You are guaranteed to get up close and personal with wildlife such as Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Impala, Blesbuck and a variety of beautiful bird species. …. A photographer’s delight.

Phezulu Boma and Spaza Restaurant

The two restaurants have been upgraded and the new food and coffee menu now appeals to the many locals visiting the park while retaining traditional flavours and methods . The Boma restaurant appeals to someone looking for a beautiful meal or coffee whilst enjoying the view. The Spaza Restaurant has a free kids play area where you can relax whilst the kids play or visit the reptile park under the safe supervision of our guides. We also cater for Kids Parties. Reptile tours are hourly and there are venomous snake demonstrations on weekends and public holidays at 12:30.

The new lodge and the 3 self-contained cottages are fast becoming a leader in the accommodation industry with their beautiful views over the valley of 1000 hills. Durban families are discovering an affordable holiday destination on their doorstep.

Phezulu Functions

• Take N3 toll road to Pietermaritzburg.
• Go through the Marianhill toll plaza.
• The first off ramp left – Assagay/Shongweni/Hillcrest, take this off ramp.
• At Stop street turn right into Kassier Road over N3 freeway, about 5 km.
• At T-junction (traffic lights) turn left, this is Old Main Road (R103) about 7 km.
• PheZulu is on your right hand side.

About Wildlife at Phezulu Safari Park

The Phezulu Safari Park is all about celebrating the natural abundance of KwaZulu-Natal as well as the cultural and historical diversity of this South African province. This private game reserve is situated in Botha’s Hill, which is in the magnificent Valley of 1 000 Hills, just over 30 minutes’ drive from Durban.

Phezulu conducts scenic game drives every hour to allow visitors many opportunities to see the wildlife and the vegetation that makes this part of the country so beautiful. These drives are conducted in comfortable 4 x 4 vehicles and by an experienced guide that has a love for and insight into Africa, which makes his commentary all the more special.

Those embarking on one of these safari drives should look out for the many bird species, as well as blesbok, impala, wildebeest and giraffe. Of course, there are also other little mammals, insects, and more to spot, in addition to the gorgeous flora. So, keep your eyes open and your camera ready.

The Phezulu Crocodile and Snake Park tours are also fantastic for young and young-at-heart that want to get up close and personal with some really special creatures. Learn about exotic and indigenous reptiles via clued-up guides that ensure visitor safety, without compromising on a really special encounter. Demonstrations with the snakes and the feeding of the crocodiles are always exciting for the visitors, and take place on weekends.

The Phezulu Village offers visitors some great insights into the Gasa Clan. Enjoy a traditional Zulu dance (there are four dance performances every day), get a sneak peek into an authentic Zulu hut, learn about the customs and belief systems of these fascinating folk, and see various artefacts that attest to the Zulu people and culture of old.

The menu here includes popular favourites with a twist. Try a crocodile burger or an ostrich steak to get a real taste of South Africa.

Phezulu Safari Park is open from Monday to Sunday, 08h00 to 16h00. Special packages for tour and school groups are available.

Safari & PheZulu Cultural Village Day Tour

This full day tour includes phezulu cultural village with two wildlife reserves to create a very popular tour. zulu dance available on request on tuesdays., ready to book, tour name & number, tour duration, from r3400 per person sharing, price varies by group size, *private tour price negotiable*, *contact us for daily specials*.

Minimum - 2 persons, 3-4 persons, 5-6 persons, 7-8 persons, 9-10 persons, tour description, this full day tour includes phezulu cultural village with two wildlife reserves, the natal lion park and tala game reserve to create a very popular tour..

The tours first stop is the Natal Lion Park which is home to a variety of wildlife including Lion, African and Asian Elephants as well as Rhino . There our guide will drive around the park in search of the Elephants before entering the Lion’s enclosure to marvel at the pride of Lions . This activity is very popular as it gives tourists a rare opportunity to enjoy the excitement of being so close to lions. Tourists are amazed at their size and beauty.

Next, we visit Tala Private Game Reserve that hosts a diverse selection of wildlife on a 3000 hectares reserve. Tala Game Reserve is a Rhino sanctuary and is home to over 370 bird species and wildlife that includes Rhino, Giraffe, Hippo and Eland to name a few of the bigger animals. Our guide will drive around the park in our closed vehicle to view all the wildlife and to share some of his knowledge into the wildlife ecosystem and interesting facts of the animals at Tala Game Reserve.

Our final stop is the ‘ Valley of 1000 Hills ’ to experience traditional Zulu culture at PheZulu Cultural Village and Reptile Park . Visitors are taken into a traditional Zulu homestead to experience what traditional Zulu life was like before the modern era. Inside a traditional Zulu homestead there are thatched huts placed in a circular position, with the cattle placed in the centre as a form of protection. At PheZulu’s ‘Sibaya’ or homestead the thatched huts are surrounding the auditorium which faces the beautiful ‘Valley of 1000 Hills’. The local PheZulu guide will take you on a guided tour of the PheZulu sibaya and describe Zulu cultural practices to gain insight into Zulu traditions during the 1800’s. The local Zulu dancing show is educating and entertaining with the local performers singing beautiful traditional Zulu songs and dancing energetically . The performers wear their traditional Zulu attire , showing off their dancing and singing skills with rhythmic agility and pride.

Included in PheZulu is the Reptile Park where guests enjoy a guided tour by a local PheZulu Reptile park guide. The local guides are very knowledgeable and eager to take you around the park and share interesting facts about the animals in the park. PheZulu Reptile Park has diverse reptilian wildlife on site which include crocodiles, alligators, snakes, tortoises, spiders and iguanas . The local PheZulu guide will let you touch or hold some of the animals including the small crocodiles and the giant Burmese python , just long enough to take a photo. This tour is ideal for families with young children.

After PheZulu Cultural Village and Reptile Park the tour proceeds back to Durban.

Choose from a Family Cottage, a Four-sleeper Unit and our Honeymoon Two-sleeper Unit. The units are fully-equipped for self-catering, and safe and secure parking is provided. Each unit has been built to afford maximum privacy. There is no wifi in the chalets but our guests may use the wifi in the lodge.

Plane tree chalet.

The rustic cottage consists of one bedroom and a very large living area. There is one bathroom/ shower which is accessible from both the lounge and bedroom. The lounge has 2 single beds and a sleeper couch. The bedroom has a king size bed. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a lovely private braai area. The magnificent Valley of 1,000 Hills panorama is your garden. DSTV dish provided, bring your own decoder.

Acacia Tree Chalet

Our 4 sleeper chalet has two bedrooms & a central living area. The rooms are on either side of the lounge & each have their own bathroom/ shower en suite. One room has 2 single beds and the other room a king size bed. The lounge has a pull out sleeper couch for an addition 2 children. There are double doors leading out to the patio & braai area overlooking the valley. The open plan living area has got a fully equipped kitchen.

Cabbage Tree Chalet

The Cabbage tree chalet is perched on top of the hill. Cabbage tree chalet is the perfect chalet for 2 with a double bed and en-suite bathroom with shower. It also includes a small kitchenette and a private braai area overlooking the valley of a thousand hills. There is a TV with local channels only.

Lodge House

The Lodge can also be rented as an entire unit and as self-catering (maximum 12 people) The lodge also has a large living area with a pool table and thatched bar. Meals can be taken in the dining room which leads on from the lounge area and BBQ/braai area. The Lodge has got a big kitchen for self-catering if you take it as a unit. The Lodge is also available for functions. A breakage deposit is require upon arrival.
