cruise south africa to seychelles

Gorgeous and romantic, the Seychelles define tropical beauty. A mountain range runs through the spine of Mahé, the largest island, and scenic national parks have sprung up around it, attracting hikers. Still, it's the idyllic beaches that have immortalized Mahé and its laid-back capital of Victoria, where the Seychellois speak a mellifluous Creole patois.

Travelling to the Seychelles: which island should you choose?

Walk around the Victoria Botanical Gardens - Mahé

Walk around the Victoria Botanical Gardens - Mahé

Created in 1901, the Victoria Botanical Gardens on the outskirts of the Seychelles' capital contain much of the flora found in the archipelago. They make a good starting point for travellers arriving on Mahé. A shady walk along the park's marked paths takes you past many native species , like sea coconuts and other palm trees, orchids, fruit trees and flowers in all colours of the rainbow. The famous Aldabra giant tortoise, many bird species and the Seychelles fruit bat have lived for a long time in this peaceful haven: a microcosm of the Seychelles' diversity.

Dive in the Sainte Anne Marine National Park - Mahé

Dive in the Sainte Anne Marine National Park - Mahé

A few kilometres from the Mahé coastline, visiting the Sainte Anne Marine National Park feels like you're at the ends of the earth. Here you can enjoy over 150 fish species as you go scuba diving or snorkelling. Founded in 1973, this park contains five islands (Sainte-Anne, Longue, Ronde, Moyenne and Cerf) bordered by fine-sand beaches and surrounded by reefs with green sea turtles, angelfish with semicircle patterns and parrotfish. Bluespotted ribbontail rays , spotted eagle rays and manta rays are star attractions in this fish-filled area.

Spend a day with giant tortoises - Curieuse

Explore a wild paradise - Curieuse

A marine national park since 1979, Curieuse island is a paradise on land and at sea. There are no homes, roads or activity here to disturb the flora and fauna. On land, the famous Aldabra giant tortoises walk around freely and gigantic sea coconuts - 3,600 trees - grow wild. The mangroves and granite beaches are ideal for walking and swimming away from the world's hustle and bustle. In the water, the many sea turtles are fascinating to watch.

Enjoy the most beautiful island - Grande Sœur

Enjoy the most beautiful island - Grande Sœur

Surrounded by white-sand beaches and granite and lush coastline, Grande Sœur island embodies the beautiful Seychelles we all imagine. The palm trees contrast with the azure sky and turquoise waters melt into the horizon. Grande Sœur is often considered the archipelago's most beautiful island: the one that has managed to retain its natural charm . Well-preserved coral reefs are home to many hawksbill sea turtles and hundreds of tropical fish like butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish and surgeonfish. Silvertip sharks sometimes come and roam around too. It's an incredible sight.

Get away from it all on land and in the water - Praslin

Get away from it all on land and in the water - Praslin

Praslin island is the perfect mix of everything the Seychelles has to offer. On the one hand, it has some of the most incredible beaches in the archipelago: white sands bathed with turquoise waters, lush vegetation and granite blocks dotted along the shore. On the other, you can find dense tropical forest and the Vallée de Mai : a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are paths that allow visitors to explore this protected area and see many palm species like sea coconut trees, the fruits of which can weigh up to 20 kg. Thanks to their suggestive shape, they are known as the "coco fesse" (bum nut) in French and are pretty notorious!

Bask on one of the world's most beautiful islands - La Digue

Bask on one of the world's most beautiful islands - La Digue

Another island, another set of picture-postcard landscapes. Covering barely 5 km2, La Digue offers a range of typical Seychelles panoramas. Granite blocks softened by erosion sit by the calm, crystalline sea, the golden sand sparkles in the sunshine, coconut palms provide welcome shade... Many of the archipelago's fantastic beaches have made it famous like Grande Anse, Petite Anse, Anse Cocos and Anse Source d'Argent , which is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

Explore a wild paradise - Aldabra Atoll

Spend a day with giant tortoises - Aldabra Atoll

One of the highlights of a trip to the Seychelles is certainly exploring the Aldabra Atoll in the south-west of the archipelago: considered one of the most unspoilt places on the planet . Because it doesn't have any drinking water, Aldabra has never been properly inhabited, which has preserved its stunning fauna. The atoll has the world's biggest population of giant tortoises , and is a unique nesting site for green sea turtles and a refuge for impressive bird colonies. This is a natural environment that leaves you speechless: a circular strip of land bordered by mangroves and beaches with transparent waters... This sanctuary has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1982.

Visit the ''bird capital'' - Aride

Visit the "bird capital" - Aride

One of the wildest islands in the Seychelles, Aride is famous for its cliffs and jungle, home to hundreds of birds . This nature reserve protected from human activity and only accessible at certain times of year sees many bird species flourish, like the Seychelles magpie-robin, tern and noddy, as well as reptiles and tortoises. This is a paradise for ornithology lovers.

Dive to see the most beautiful coral - Alphonse

Dive to see the most beautiful coral - Alphonse

In the middle of the Seychelles, Alphonse island is mainly famous among diving enthusiasts for its coral - some of the most unspoilt in the Indian Ocean - and its diverse marine wildlife . Marine mammals, sea turtles, tropical fish, all kinds of coral, sumptuous slopes... The underwater spectacle is just as stunning as the one on land, where the beaches compete to be the most beautiful and the atoll creates an incredible internal lake.

Unique features

The Aldabra giant tortoise found in the Seychelles can grow to an incredible size: males can reach 1.2 metres and weigh up to 300 kilos, while females measure 90 cm on average. Their longevity has also been studied as some have reached the age of 140 or more, giving them the title of world's oldest land animal . Jonathan the tortoise celebrated his 187th birthday in 2019. Meanwhile, on Bird Island, a tortoise called Esmeralda is thought to have been born in 1771.

Myths & legends

His real name was Olivier Levasseur , but he is better known by his nickname: La Buse (The Buzzard). This old French privateer struck in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean in the 18th century, making an impact on pirate history. When he was hanged in 1729, he supposedly threw a mysterious cryptogram into the crowd, crying out: "Find my treasure he who can! ». Myth or reality? No loot has yet been found, but some people still have hope! Escale link

In the spotlight

The Aldabra Clean-Up Project is an ambitious joint project between the University of Oxford and the Seychelles Island Foundation, aiming to clean up the beaches on the Aldabra Atoll. Although this unspoilt area isn't polluted by human activity, the shore is covered with rubbish that has been carried along by the tides. The waste is gathered by volunteers, sorted then taken to Mahé to be recycled. In February 2019, over five weeks, no fewer than four tonnes of rubbish were collected on the Aldabra Atoll: a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. Escale link

Books. Antoine Abel (1934-2004) is one of the archipelago's most iconic writers. A teacher of children then of students at the École Normale Supérieure des Seychelles, he wrote from the end of the 60s in French, English and Seychelles Creole, promoting the latter heavily. Poem collections, novellas, novels, theatre, stories, comics... His work is extensive and his narratives beautifully simple.

Music. Patrick Victor is from a family of musicians and was surrounded by traditional Seychelles music as a child. Growing up, he became one of its key ambassadors. Through his texts and music, he promotes Creole culture, as demonstrated by his first song in 1975, which mentions moutia : a dance done by slaves in the 19th century.

Dutch, French, Indian and Malaysian meld to create the Afrikaans-style of cooking. Braai or shisa nyama, which means ‘burn the meat,’ is like western BBQ. For a meaty snack, try Biltong. Served in a brown bag, these spiced strips are akin to jerky. Wondering about Slap Chips? Try these vinegar-doused fries alone or in a Gatsby sandwich. Seafood lovers can rejoice too at Mossel Bay, whose name means bay of mussels. Need a ‘dop’ or drink? A favorite is Amarula, a cream liqueur made from the fruit of the Marula tree. Elephants get drunk eating its fermented fruit.

How these cruise passengers missed boarding, got stranded in Africa

Both Americans and Australians were left at port after an excursion ran long.

After what seemed like a dream trip, several American travelers were left stranded at port in West Africa mid-cruise while traveling from Cape Town, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain.

Jay and Jill Campbell told ABC News Myrtle Beach affiliate WPDE that they were in the first week of a three week voyage aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines when they stopped just off the coast of West Africa.

The couple and others opted to tour the nearby island of São Tomé and Príncipe on the afternoon of March 27, and when the excursion ran late, they said they brought it to the guides' attention.

"We were like, 'our time is getting short,'" Jay Campbell recalled, at which point he said the guide let them know, "'No problem we can get you back in an hour.'"

Upon their return, the passengers said cruise officials refused to let them aboard the ship, even as the local Coast Guard had ferried the group to the anchored vessel.

"The harbormaster tried to call the ship. The captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL the customer service emergency number," Jay Campbell said. "They said the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is via email. They're not responding to our emails."

The Campbells say they were left stranded along with four other Americans and two Australians -- of whom one is a paraplegic, one has a heart condition and one is pregnant. Some did not have credit cards or medication that was left on board.

Cruise expert Stewart Chiron, known as The Cruise Guy, told ABC News that "the bottom line was, they were hours late, the ship was ready to go."

"More than likely that the anchor was already up, and the ship was already possibly moving," he said.

He continued, "Any operation at that point to get these passengers back on the ship would have caused tremendous delays, and safety would have been a major concern."

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said, "On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time."

They continued, "While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship's intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel."

The spokesperson added that the passports for the passengers who did not return at the all aboard time "were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol."

"Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call," they said.

The Campbells said that their eight person group spent 15 hours traveling through six countries in an attempt to rejoin the Norwegian Dawn ship in Banjul, Gambia, on April 1. However, the ship couldn't dock due to low tide, so they are now trying to get to Senegal where the ship is meant to dock on Tuesday.

PHOTO: In this Feb. 2, 2021 file photo, a panoramic view of the Obo National Park is seen in São Tomé and Príncipe.

The Norwegian spokesperson said, "Unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests' disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority."

The cruise line contacted the guests "regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024."

In light of the "series of unfortunate events outside of our control," the spokesperson said Norwegian Cruise Lines "will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal" and are still in communication with the guests to provide additional information as it becomes available.

In a separate, unrelated situation that took place coincidentally on the same day of the voyage, the spokesperson said, "An 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

"In instances such as these, as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent," the spokesperson added, saying they worked with the port agent to receive updates.

"The guest has since been escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return," they said.

Norwegian Cruise says stranded American passengers were over hour late to ship, given passports: report

5 things you didn’t know about traveling on cruise ships

Norwegian Cruise passengers, who were stranded on an African island , missed the boarding time by more than an hour, which is why they were left behind, according to reports.

Eight passengers, including six Americans and two Australians, were on a private tour of São Tomé and missed the 3 p.m. all-aboard call on Friday, the cruise line said.

A cruise line spokesperson originally told Sky News the group was late by more than an hour, which was confirmed by the New York Post.

"When they missed the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. by more than an hour, their passports were left with the local port agent for retrieval when they returned to the port from their private tour (not organized by us), per the protocol," a cruise line spokesperson told the Post.

When passengers on excursions or private tours are late, it's the cruise line's right to sail away to stay on time.

Two members of the group – Jay and Jill Campbell, a South Carolina couple – said in news interviews that their tour guide ran late and did not get them back to the ship on time Friday.

The boat was still in sight of the island, and the Coast Guard ferried the group to the ship, but the captain denied them entry.

"Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel," a spokesperson for the cruise line said.

Jill said the cruise line "followed the rules too rigidly" during a Tuesday morning interview on The Today Show .

"I really feel that they forgot they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and well-being of their customers should be their first priority," Jill said, and the crew had a "basic duty of care that they had forgotten about."

The Norwegian Cruise Line secured the group's passports, as part of protocol, according to their statement, but didn't grab vital medicines, money or other belongings, according to the Campbells.

Among the group is a paraplegic, a man who has a heart condition and a pregnant Delaware woman and her husband.

"When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all-aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port," the company said.

After chasing the ship through several countries, the eight stranded passengers finally caught up and boarded the ship by Wednesday morning, Norwegian Cruise Line told Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Campbells, and Norwegian Cruise Line said they're working on getting answers to followup questions, including an unrelated incident where an elderly woman had to disembark for medical reasons.

Julie Lenkoff, 80, suffered a stroke and potentially a heart attack during the trip, and the cruise line said they thought it was in her best interest to send her to a local clinic on São Tomé.

But her family said the cruise line never called Lenkoff's emergency contacts, and left her behind.

That's when the Campbells learned she was on the same island and took care of her.

"They're heroes," Lenkoff's son-in-law, Kurt Gies, told Fox News Digital about the Campbells. "They saved our mother."

The South Carolina couple helped Lenkoff reach her family in the U.S., and she was eventually flown to the states on a 30-hour flight from São Tomé to Lisbon, Portugal, to Toronto to Stanford Hospital in California "that no one was sure she would even survive."

She's since been admitted to Stanford Hospital, where she's been under constant care, Gies said.

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.

One of the American passengers who were  left stranded in Africa  when their cruise ship left the port without them now says she is unsure whether she even wants to resume the 20-day voyage, after Norwegian Cruise Lines forgot about its “basic duty of care.”

Jill Campbell, her husband, Jay Campbell, and six other passengers raced through seven different countries over the past 48 hours to make it to Senegal, where the ship docked Tuesday morning,  she told the “Today” show.

But now that they’re there, she said, they are “considering whether we are going to board the ship.

Jill and Jay Campbell are pictured.

“After what we witnessed, we truly believe there is a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed — they followed those rules too rigidly,” Campbell said.

“I really feel that they forgot they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and wellbeing of their customers should be their first priority,” she added, claiming the crew of the ship had a “basic duty of care that they had forgotten about.”

The Campbells, as well as four other Americans and two Australian passengers, had taken a privately-run tour on the island of São Tomé which ran past the time they were due to be back on the ship Friday.

When they finally reached the port, the ship was still anchored, and the island’s Coast Guard took them on a boat to a ship in order to get back onboard, Jay Campbell  told WMBF.

The captain then allegedly refused to let them board.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us and then go on the way,” Campbell said.

“They had no port to call for the next day, they were simply going to be at sea.”

They and the others — including a married couple from Delaware, a paraplegic person and an elderly man with a heart condition — were left stranded on the island without any of their belongings from the cabin, including money, medicine and necessary travel documents.

The Campbells were the only ones who had a Visa card on them, and had to pay more than $5,000 in food, toiletries and hotels for the group, they told WRAL.

They also met up with an elderly woman who said she was left behind by the ship after she  suffered a stroke on another tour  and was sent to a local hospital — and the Campbells helped arrange for her to fly back to the United States.

Those who remained tried to meet up with the cruise ship at the port in Gambia in West Africa, traveling 15 hours through six countries to reach the port on Sunday, only to find that the ship could not dock due to low tides,  according to WPDE.

A group of people including Jill and Jay Campbell, stranded on a boat near São Tomé and Príncipe, Africa after being denied reentry to their Norwegian cruise ship.

In a statement to The Post, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said it is a “very unfortunate situation,” but noted that guests are responsible for returning to the ship at the published all-aboard time.

“When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all-aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port as per the regular protocol,” the spokesman said.

“Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call.

“Given that these guests were on a private tour and did not return to the ship at the communicated all-aboard time, they are responsible for any necessary travel arrangements to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call, per our protocol.”

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal,” the spokesperson added.

“We remain in communication with the guests and are providing information as it becomes available.”

Passengers set to rejoin cruise after reportedly being left behind on African island

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. ( WMBF /Gray News) - A group of passengers who were reportedly left on an African island by their cruise liner is planning to return to the ship on Tuesday.

In a statement, Norwegian Cruise Line said the group is set to rejoin the cruise in Dakar, Senegal.

The passengers were originally supposed to reboard on Monday in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship could not dock safely due to the weather.

Norwegian Cruise Line said its protocol means guests are typically responsible for any travel costs to rejoin the ship at the next port of call, but Norwegian will reimburse the group because of the weather issues.

The guests, which include a Garden City couple Jill and Jay Campbell, haven’t been back on the ship since March 27, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe.

Norwegian Cruise Line said the guests were on a private tour and did not make it back in time.

“We were waiting for the tender boats to come back and get us because our boat was anchored off the harbor, but they didn’t come back to get us,” Jay Campbell previously shared.

According to the cruise line, all guests were told about an all-aboard 3 p.m. call time that day, but the guests missed it by more than an hour. It added that their passports were left with the local port agents for retrieval.

Norwegian Cruise Line explained that it works closely with local tour operators to ensure excursions are planned to the cruise line’s schedule to guarantee timely arrivals back to port. However, since the group was on a private tour, it was not in communication with the tour operator.

The Campbells were eight days into the 21-day cruise, which started in South Africa.

Norwegian Cruise Line claimed that once the guests did not make it back to the ship, it worked with them and the local port agent to help with obtaining the necessary visas for them.

Over the weekend, the passengers shared that they tried reaching out to Norwegian Cruise Line but they did not hear back from the company promptly regarding reembarking the ship.

“We paid a lot for this trip to Africa, so we hope to make it through the rest of this trip and end in Spain,” Jay Campbell previously shared.

6 American, 2 Australian cruise ship passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian Cruise refused to let them board

E ight Norwegian Cruise passengers, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, claim they have been stranded on an African island without money and vital medications after the vessel left port without them.

Jill and Jay Campbell, from South Carolina, said they are stuck on the Central African island of São Tomé with four other American and two Australian passengers after the captain of the ship allegedly refused to let them reboard, according to WMBF.

But a spokesperson for the cruise line claimed the passengers were left on the island “on their own or with a private tour” and missed the “all-aboard time.”

“Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel,” the spokesperson said.

The Campbells acknowledged there was “an issue” on their tour of the island, and the guide “didn’t get us back” to the ship in time on Friday.

“We were like, our time is getting really short, and they were like ‘No problem, we can get you back within an hour,” Jay recounted telling the tour guide.

He said the tour operator then contacted the cruise ship captain to let them know they would be late.

When they reached the port, Campbell said the ship was still anchored, and the island’s Coast Guard took them on a boat to a ship in order to get back onboard.

The captain then allegedly refused to let them board.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us and then go on the way,” Campbell said.

“They had no port to call for the next day, they were simply going to be at sea.”

They and the others — including a married couple from Delaware, a paraplegic and an elderly man with a heart condition — were left stranded on the island without any of their belongings from the cabin, including money, medicine and necessary travel documents.

The Campbells were the only ones who had a Visa card on their person, and had to pay more than $5,000 in food, toiletries and hotels for the group, they told WRAL.

In an updated statement on Saturday, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines noted that “guests are responsible for any necessary travel costs to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call.”

Knowing this, the group had planned to fly to Gambia in West Africa to meet the cruise ship at the port on Sunday.

They then spent 15 hours traveling through six countries to reach the port on Easter, only to find out that the ship could not dock due to low tides,  according to WPDE.

The passengers are now heading to a port in Senegal, where the cruise is set to dock on Tuesday.

But doing so is not going to be easy.

“What we looked at was some type of van transportation for eight people, the quadriplegic woman included, driving from here,” Jay told WPDE.

“We have to cross the ferry to get into Senegal,” he added. “We just learned from the gentleman that the ferry hadn’t been working, but he said, ‘No problem, if the ferry is not working, we will get another little boat and then pick up a car on the other side.

“And then once we get on the other side of Senegal, it’s another four hour drive.”

Still, Jay said the voyage is worth it.

“We paid a lot for this trip to Africa, so we hope to make it through the rest of this trip and end in Spain,” he told WBMF.

In its updated statement on Saturday, a spokesperson for Norwegian said they are “in communication with the guests” and have been working “closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed if the guests were to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call.”

Daughter speaks out after cruise leaves hospitalized 80-year-old mother on African island

by JOEL VAZQUEZ-JUARBE | WPDE Staff

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — While eight of the nine passengers stranded on São Tomé and Príncipe continue to scramble to make their way back onboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship , one woman is already back in the United States.

Julia Lenkoff, 80, is a seasoned traveler. She’s been to nearly 120 countries, speaks 10 languages and often travels by herself.

It’s important to note that Lenkoff was on a Norwegian-sponsored tour, a different one from the rest of the group when she had a medical emergency.

“I just know how much she was looking forward to this trip, and it was so exciting for her. And here she was on day eight, and I just felt really bad for her," said Lana Gies, her daughter.

Gies said her mother was sent to a hospital in São Tomé and released the next day. Eight other stranded passengers, including Garden City couple Jill and Jay Campbell, met Lenkoff after she was released and took care of her.

"When Jill said she’s got some confusion, that freaked me out,” Gies said.

Lenkoff felt dizzy, couldn’t feel the right side of her body and at one point she responded in French when people spoke to her.

She doesn’t speak French on a regular basis," Gies said. "It’s not something that, you know, these are all signs of brain injury.

According to a statement from Norwegian Cruise Line, Lenkoff was medically disembarked after their onboard medical team decided it was best that she be treated at a local hospital.

However, Lenkoff said that her mother never re-embarked the ship when she experienced her medical emergency and their medical team never examined her.

The statement continued to say, “As the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical information with anyone else without their expressed consent.”

"They released her from the hospital. They couldn’t contact me, because they don’t contact the next of kin while the other person is perfectly fine," Gies said.

But from what Gies saw, her mother was not fine.

She said she and her husband worked for 36 hours straight to get Lenkoff back to the U.S.

They arranged for her to fly from São Tomé to Lisbon to Toronto and then San Francisco where she was immediately transported to Stanford Medical Center for treatment.

We said we thought she had a small stroke, and the doctor said ‘Well, I wouldn’t say it was a small stroke, I would say you had a pretty significant stroke,'" Gies said.

Lenkoff has been in the hospital since Monday and has gone through a number of tests.

She had a second stroke Monday night, but it was milder and she is doing okay.

Gies said she still hasn’t heard from Norwegian Cruise Line about the incident.

"I have not had a verbal conversation with anybody from Norwegian, and they know who I am," Gies said.

ABC15 News has reached back out to Norwegian Cruise Line for comment but we are still waiting to hear back.
