TSA PreCheck and Clear can both get you through airport security faster. But which is better?

Here’s a look at the benefits, requirements and price of TSA PreCheck versus Clear to help you decide which will work best for you — and whether you should get both. Plus, learn all the ways you can get one (or both) for free .

Here are three main differences between Clear and TSA PreCheck:

Bypassing security vs. shortening the wait. TSA PreCheck allows you to go through a shorter security line and undergo less strict screening requirements (i.e. don’t need to take off shoes). Clear allows you to skip the security line completely because instead of waiting in line, you approach a Clear kiosk where your ID and boarding pass are verified through biometric technology. Once that quick process is complete, a Clear agent escorts you right to the front of security. No waiting required.

Cost. TSA PreCheck costs $78 for five years while Clear costs $189 per year.

Organization type. Clear is owned by a private company while TSA PreCheck is a government program.

One program doesn’t replace the other. They are complementary to one another.

TSA PreCheck and Clear aren’t available at every airport, so many frequent travelers find it best to have memberships to both. This improves the odds of faster and smoother airport experiences.

Luckily, there are many credit cards that completely cover the cost of both programs, allowing you to pay nothing out-of-pocket for both benefits.

TSA PreCheck , managed by the Transportation Security Administration, is available to low-risk travelers who undergo an advance screening process. Open to U.S. citizens and certain foreign citizens, this includes a background check to determine eligibility for passing through airport security without having follow certain protocols.

Examples include removing your shoes and belt, taking out liquids or electronics (like laptop computers), and taking off outer garments, like a light jacket.

How does TSA PreCheck work?

Once you’re approved for TSA PreCheck, you’re issued a Known Traveler Number, which you provide to your airline by storing it in your frequent flyer account or entering it into your reservation . Your boarding passes will henceforth include a TSA PreCheck designation that authorizes you to use an expedited security screening lane in more than 200 domestic airports. More than 85 domestic and international airlines participate in the program.

TSA PreCheck members pass through a traditional metal detector rather than a full body scanner (which some people find invasive). And you’ll usually get through security much faster: According to the TSA, more than 89% of PreCheck-eligible passengers waited five minutes or less in March 2023.

TSA doesn't guarantee expedited screening with PreCheck. Occasionally, you may have to go through a random secondary check of your bags by security personnel.

If the TSA PreCheck designation doesn't appear on your boarding pass, you can ask an airline agent to reenter your information. This usually fixes the problem, and an agent can reprint the boarding pass with the necessary TSA PreCheck information.

How to apply for TSA PreCheck

U.S. citizens and foreign citizens who meet particular residency requirements are eligible to apply online and pay the $78 fee (good for five years and easy to renew online for $70 per renewal after five years). After applying online and receiving conditional approval, your final application step is to visit an enrollment center for a brief interview.

Children under 12 can also apply, but if you travel with them, they can also access the TSA PreCheck line with you without paying to be a member. Children 13-17 years old can also accompany TSA PreCheck member parents/guardians but must have the TSA PreCheck indicator on their boarding pass to do so.

WANT TSA PRECHECK FOR FREE?

A number of popular travel credit cards reimburse you for the application fee for trusted traveler programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry. (A TSA PreCheck fee waiver is also available as an optional reward for Platinum members of the Orbitz Rewards program .) Among those cards:

If your credit card offers reimbursement for the application fee for programs like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, you must pay the fee with the card. You cannot submit a claim for reimbursement if you paid with some other method. Reimbursement will usually appear as a statement credit in your account within two months.

Cards typically offer reimbursement of only one fee once every four to five years. Check the terms and conditions of your card for the specific rules that apply. Note also that these cards only reimburse the application fee for a trusted traveler program. They don't automatically enroll you in the program or guarantee that you'll be accepted by the program. You still have to apply and go through the required screening, which in the case of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry includes an in-person appointment.

If you have been approved for Global Entry, you do not need to apply separately for TSA PreCheck. It comes automatically with Global Entry, so do not double pay.

If you travel internationally often, applying for Global Entry would make more sense, but if you are a mostly domestic traveler, you should stick to TSA PreCheck as the application process is simpler.

Using biometric data to identify travelers (rather than manually checking photo identification), Clear machines allow flyers to bypass long security queues and get to a TSA screening point faster. Clear does not include the membership features of TSA PreCheck, however.

After passing through a Clear kiosk, if you have PreCheck, you can go directly to the PreCheck lane (ahead of other passengers waiting in line); if not, you must use the regular screening line (also ahead of other passengers waiting in line). The real benefit of Clear is saving time.

This means that if you value not having to remove shoes, electronics, liquids and outerwear, you will also want to apply for TSA PreCheck. If you only want to bypass the line, but don't mind removing items and passing through a body scanner, then Clear may be worth it on its own.

Unlike TSA PreCheck, Clear is only available at a few dozen domestic airports. Members use a faster line to scan their fingerprint or iris before moving directly to the security lane. Clear is also available at other venues that require lining up for a security check, like stadiums.

As an added perk, Clear membership will also get you complimentary Avis Preferred Plus status with Avis's loyalty program . Avis Preferred Plus status includes perks like:

You would typically need to spend $4,000 on qualifying Avis purchases or complete 10 rentals in a calendar year to qualify for Avis Preferred Plus.

How to apply for Clear

You can apply for Clear online or at an airport Clear kiosk by showing valid government-issued identification. Unlike TSA PreCheck, there is no background check needed to apply for Clear, although you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident 18 or older.

Clear costs $189 for an annual membership (auto-renewals are possible and do not require any additional verification), and members can add up to three family members for an additional $60 per person. Children under 18 can use a Clear lane for free if they are traveling with a Clear member.

Clear offers a free two-month trial if you want to test it out, and if you are a United Premier 1K or Delta Diamond Medallion member, you get an annual membership free of charge. Other Delta and United elite members get a discount.

Cards that offer Clear membership

Several cards will reimburse you if you pay for Clear membership with the card. This includes The Platinum Card® from American Express , the American Express® Green Card and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express . Each offers a statement credit up to $189 per year for purchasing Clear access. Other cards offering a fee credit for the Clear application include the United℠ Explorer Card , United Club℠ Infinite Card and Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card .

Since TSA PreCheck is available at more airports and provides expedited security wait times, as well as an easier screening process, TSA PreCheck is better than Clear if you want to only get one. Those with Clear membership only have access to faster security lanes. Without TSA PreCheck, Clear members must still remove their shoes, electronics, liquids and outerwear.

But the choice of TSA PreCheck versus Clear doesn't have to be an either-or proposition. Many TSA PreCheck members value having Clear, as it further expedites moving ahead of the occasionally long TSA PreCheck lane in dozens of airports.

Still, TSA PreCheck remains the best way to make your way airside without wasting time in lines.

The only real upside to having Clear alone, without TSA PreCheck, is if you plan to use it exclusively at stadiums, where it will get you to the front of the line faster.

Not all U.S. citizens will be approved for TSA PreCheck for various reasons, including problems with a background check. If that’s you, Clear alone can be worthwhile if you fly regularly from an airport that has Clear lanes.

When you travel and go through airport security, the first checkpoint involves standing in a long line for a TSA agent to scan your boarding pass and ID.

With CLEAR , you skip the line and enter security through your own designated lane where you check-in and are escorted directly to the physical screening. 

Instead of using traditional ID documents, CLEAR uses your eyes and face to confirm it's really you. This is done by transforming your biometrics into an encrypted code of ones and zeros that are unique to you. 

The platform is Department of Homeland Security- and SAFETY Act-certified.

To use CLEAR, you'll first enroll by filling out a short online application . It takes just a few moments.

Then, you'll visit a participating airport  to get your eyes and fingerprints scanned. Bring one of the following forms of photo identification with you:

Though the two might sound like they're interchangeable, CLEAR isn't a substitute for TSA PreCheck. Here are some key differences:

• TSA PreCheck expedites the security process by putting you in a shorter line to get your documents checked and allows you to keep your shoes, laptops, liquids, belts, and jackets on you. Meanwhile, CLEAR expedites the general security process by letting you bypass the first line for document verification altogether with the biometric screening. If you have TSA PreCheck, you'll move on to the physical screening and still enjoy the benefits of PreCheck. If not, you will be physically screened per the standard rules. In other words, CLEAR members don't have a separate second screening like PreCheck members do, unless they have a membership with both.
• TSA PreCheck members can get randomly excluded and sent to the regular line. CLEAR does not have random exclusions.
• TSA PreCheck only works with certain airlines, though it's available in many more airports nationwide. CLEAR works with any airline, but its rollout in airports is still limited. CLEAR is also available at some sports stadiums. 
• To enroll in TSA PreCheck, you submit an online application and schedule an in-person appointment at an enrollment center. The appointment includes a background check and fingerprinting. To enroll in CLEAR, you submit an online application and visit an airport location where you undergo a background check and fingerprinting. No appointment is necessary and it's much quicker overall. 

CLEAR itself is an attractive option for travel during COVID-19 as it removes waiting in a lengthy general airport security line with no social distancing.

It also facilitates travel during the pandemic with the option to use Health Pass, a free feature on the CLEAR app for members who are 18 and over that connects your verified identity with your health history to create a digital vaccine card. This then syncs with Health Pass to show proof of vaccination for venues and countries that require it.

It may be used in some places to avoid mandatory quarantine, such as Hawaii .

I tried CLEAR this summer when I flew cross country on more than one occasion. The cost was comped by the company for review purposes. 

I signed up online in minutes, per the directions, and added my husband to my family account. Because my infant daughter was well under 18, I did not need to make an account for her.

When I arrived at San Francisco Airport for a 7 a.m. return flight to New York City, despite the early arrival, the security line was already incredibly long. I was thankful to zip past it to a separate area designated for CLEAR with a handful kiosks for checking-in.

Because this was my first time using CLEAR, I needed to finish my enrollment. The company says this should only take five minutes, though mine took at least 10 to 15. Part of this was because we were juggling a baby, but a CLEAR attendant was also required to shepherd us through the process and ours was quite busy helping multiple travelers at once.

All I needed to do, though, was look up my personal information, scan my fingertips and retina, and that was about it.

Once checked in, the attendant printed my boarding pass and I had to wait for a few other guests to finish the process so he could bring us all to the next step in the security screening process. 

My husband, however, who had TSA PreCheck, was guided to a separate line for travelers with the distinction. I went to the security line for general travelers, and while I was able to skip to the front to have my ID checked, I had to wait in a long line to go through the X-ray scanner. CLEAR did not grant privileges to cut it and I had to remove my iPad.

When I flew again a month later, departing from Hartford, Connecticut, I was excited to see if CLEAR would be faster in a smaller airport. Unfortunately, it was not offered there and I waited in the general line from start to finish.

As a former TSA PreCheck holder, I couldn't help but compare the two. When looking at TSA PreCheck vs CLEAR, the differences are, well, quite clear.

TSA PreCheck is cheaper at $85 for five years, whereas CLEAR costs $179 for one year. It's worth noting though that CLEAR is offered at additional venues beyond airports, and if you frequent many sports games or concerts where it is offered, you'll certainly appreciate the shorter line. 

TSA PreCheck also often sees fewer lines overall. It's more widely available whereas CLEAR is limited to a handful of airports. If CLEAR is not offered in your home airport, it's probably not worth it.

However, enrolling in CLEAR is so much easier. Part of the reason why my TSA PreCheck lapsed is that it feels like such a hassle to make an appointment to sign up, which usually takes place in out-of-the-way locations and requires fingerprinting.

Signing up for CLEAR on the other hand takes just a few moments and you can do it on the way to your flight from your mobile device. You can still cut to the front of the first security line, and if the X-ray scanner isn't backed up, it's a great way to speed up travel through an airport terminal.

Choosing which one is best really depends on the types of venues you visit most often and whether CLEAR is offered in the airport from where you're most likely to depart.

If you travel frequently out of CLEAR's participating airports and want to save yourself time and anxiety, CLEAR is a worthwhile investment to consider. And with the following two deals, it's well worth trying out to see if it's a good fit for your needs.

Saves me a lot of time and keeps things clean

I don’t fly very frequently, but when I do, I love using Clear. Recently got it for my wife as well and it’s just $50 to add a family member. We are always a bit late on getting to the airport, maybe not even late, but we like to be confident we make the gate on time. It really saved me a good chunk of rebooking money as we were late to the gate originally and the security lane was just out of control due to limited number of workers at the domestic erminal at SFO. I quickly added my wife to my Clear account (4 min) and we made it to the gate in 3 more minutes using Clear. That day we saved at least $300 on rebooking fees and it gave us a peace of mind. I like the mobile app and now I know when to leave home if I’m using Clear. They have a home to gate ETA feature, really helpful in planning on when to drive to the airport. Would be nice if it worked/ Multiple attempts to set up have failed

Update: I have again attempted to set up an account with the new updates, but still have no success. Extremely frustrating that even the newest update has not fixed whatever issues the app has been having. I’ve spoken with others that are upset with the set up as well, they too have tried multiple times to set up an account, but to no success either. It has to do with the picture of the face portion. After my initial review I received an email to “Please, please, please” contact them. I contacted them but have heard nothing back. Really upsetting. I might just be selling my single game tickets to the highest bidder and tailgating during games. Unfortunate. Also, the amount of tracking the app does is absolutely horrendous. Why does it need to know all of that info for me to watch a game…from a third party that I didn’t pay for the PSL/tickets? Do better Clear. Original post: I am PSL season ticket holder to the Raiders. We have to use this system to verify you have the vaccine. Problem is, registration doesn’t work because it won’t capture a your face to verify it against a passport or ID photo. Too bad. Now I have to go through a separate line and verify my hard copy vaccine paper. Terrible system. Which there was not a monopoly on one system, and they would allow for multiple ones. Maybe another one would actually work. If I could rate zero I would.

App doesn’t work, horrible customer service

A concert I recently attended required proof of covid vaccination status. Attendees could bring their actual cards or could use the Clear digital vaccine card. I downloaded the app on 10/4, 8 days before the concert and tried to create my digital vaccine card. It didn’t work at all. The process failed after all my information was entered. I contacted customer service via text (the only option they give you) and didn’t hear back for an entire day. When I finally got the return text on 10/5 I was at work and couldn’t answer right then. I was told to delete and reinstall the app, which I did, to no avail. I contacted them again but could not get through to someone until 10/16, THIRTEEN days after my initial inquiry. In the mean time. I would get texts asking for my name, email and birthdate, which I provided, but then I was asked for this information again and again. I also had to keep explaining what the problem was, but they kept ghosting me. The customer service was AWFUL. Like literally the worst I have ever experienced! When I finally did get through to someone, just today on 10/16, I tried all the things asked if me and the answer was just “huh, it doesn’t work”. So this app doesn’t work at all and the customer service is abysmal.

Even if you have TSA PreCheck® , now might be the time to add Clear® to your list of ways to get through airport security faster. A Clear® Plus memership works like this: After signing up online and completing a short in-person biometric scan to verify your identity, you’ll be able to walk up to a Clear® kiosk at any airport where there is one and scan your fingerprints or eyes (no need to scan your license or passport). How much does Clear® Plus cost?

It typically costs $189 for an annual Clear® Plus membership , but there are several ways to lower this number through frequent flier memberships, promotional codes, or credit card statement credits. You can also add up to three family members and friends to your account for an extra $60 each per year. Those family members and friends don’t need to be traveling with you or together to use their memberships. Relatives under 18 years old can always join in the Clear® lane alongside a member at no cost.

Is Clear® Plus worth it?

Overall, a Clear® Plus membership is worth it if you regularly fly through any of the dozens of U.S. airports it currently serves, including JFK, LAX, and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. If you’re a sports fan, your Clear® membership also allows you to skip the line at many major sports stadiums throughout the country, including Oracle Park in San Francisco and Denver’s Coors Field.

Additionally, Clear® has some tools that may expedite your pandemic-era trip. You can store your digital vaccination card through Clear® as well as sometimes upload documents to create a Health Pass for air or cruise travel (when required).

How to get Clear® Plus for free

In addition to offering statement credits covering Global Entry and TSA PreCheck® fees , the Platinum Card® from American Express (annual fee $695, see rates and fees ) also offers up to $189 in statement credits each year toward an annual Clear® Plus membership fee. Same goes for the Business Platinum Card® from American Express (annual fee $695, see rates and fees ). While the American Express® Green Card provides a statement credit up to $189 annually, there is, interestingly, no Clear® benefit for Gold cardholders.

You first must enroll for this benefit online or by calling the number on the back of your card. After enrolling, simply charge your annual membership to your Platinum or Green card and days or weeks later a statement credit will appear for the amount paid, up to $189. It’s important to note that while Global Entry and TSA PreCheck credits extend to each additional Platinum card holder , the Clear® credit does not.

It’s also possible to get a free membership as a top frequent flier. If you hold Delta’s coveted Diamond Medallion status, you can get a Clear® membership for free. Likewise, those with United Premier 1K status also receive complimentary membership.

Clear® discounts for Delta SkyMiles members

Anyone with a SkyMiles account (which is free to sign up for) can pay $179 for an annual Clear® membership—a savings of $10 off the full price. If you’re a Platinum, Gold, or Silver Medallion member on Delta, or have a Delta SkyMiles credit card, you’ll only pay $149. Clear® discounts for United MileagePlus members

Anyone with a Mileage Plus account (which is also free to sign up for) qualifies for a discounted $179 annual Clear® membership. Is Clear® better than TSA PreCheck?

Although people see Clear® and TSA PreCheck as competitors, they are meant to complement one another. TSA PreCheck is free with over a dozen credit cards and is an essential for travel through U.S. airports. Clear® is an added time-saving service on top of TSA PreCheck at select airports.

If you still feel the need to choose one, TSA PreCheck always wins. PreCheck lines are far shorter and faster than regular airport security lines. The annual fee is $85 for five years (and reimbursed by many credit cards ). Not having to remove shoes, electronics, or 3-1-1 liquids makes airport security a breeze.

We don’t recommend getting a Clear® membership without a TSA PreCheck membership. You’ll still fast track to the front of the regular airport security line but will need to take off your shoes and remove your electronics from your bag while going through the checkpoint. This means your time savings are kind of out the window.

In total, the optimal situation is to have both TSA PreCheck and Clear®. It’s the most you can do to make today’s airport experience as fast and efficient as possible. Those who carry the Platinum Card® from American Express can score both for free, while frequent flier members of both Delta and United can land deep discounts on a Clear® membership.

American Express Credit Cards

If you hold  The Platinum Card ® from American Express , The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express ,  American Express ®  Gold Card , or Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card , you’ll receive a credit of up to $189 for complimentary CLEAR Plus membership.

Delta SkyMiles

If you’re a Delta SkyMiles member, you can save on your annual CLEAR membership:

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan

If you’re an Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan MVP, MVP Gold, MVP Gold 75k, and MVP Gold 100k member, you’ll qualify for a discounted price of $179 . Elite members also receive 1,500 miles when enrolling in CLEAR for the first time and 1,250 miles each year upon renewal.

If you’re a student, you’re eligible for  special student pricing of $60 a year for 4 years.

CLEAR partners with a third-party service to confirm eligibility, but if you’re a student, this is one of the cheapest ways to get CLEAR.

If you’re joining as a family, you can add adult family members at $99 a person per year. 

According to CLEAR, “family” doesn’t necessarily need to be your biological family: “whether it is your biological family, chosen family, or friends that feel like family. It’s totally up to you!” Children under 18 do not need to enroll and can join any CLEAR member in line for free.

Following a 1-time enrollment, CLEAR will connect your biometrics (e.g., face, iris) to your personal identity, making it possible for you to speed through airport and sports venue security using only the blink of your eye.

The CLEAR platform aims to create a smoother experience for its members, from biometric airport boarding passes to biometric airport lounge access and easy access to sports venues and concessions. When you become a CLEAR member, your standard ID, ticket, and boarding pass are simply replaced by your eyes.

This means you’ll no longer need to remove your wallet from your purse or pocket. Members enroll or verify at any CLEAR pod at the participating location, and then a CLEAR Ambassador escorts you through the dedicated CLEAR lanes.

Any U.S. citizen and legal permanent resident who has reached the age of 18 is eligible for enrollment in CLEAR.

The program is not open to international residents, though they likely wouldn’t receive many benefits unless they travel extensively within the U.S.

The only restriction is that the full name on your application must match the name on your photo ID.

Unlike Global Entry and other expedited programs, CLEAR members have no background check . This is because you are not receiving any expedited or reduced screening by being a CLEAR member.

The program matches your eye and identity with your boarding pass, so you don’t have to present your ID to a TSA officer. From there, you’re still assigned access to the regular security lanes or TSA PreCheck (if you have that program).

CLEAR offers accelerated touchless screening for members going through airport identification security lines before any physical screening. Currently, CLEAR is working on an airport expansion to create a smooth experience from curb to gate for all members.

Eventually, this would include baggage check and claim, boarding, airport lounge access, and security checkpoints . Once you become an enrolled CLEAR member, you can utilize this service anywhere that CLEAR is found. The other CLEAR program benefits include:

• Fast and easy enrollment that only requires a few minutes
• Accelerated screening in security ID lines at participating airports
• Availability at an ever-expanding list of airports and sports venues all over the country

CLEAR also offers its members several exclusive discounts or opportunities within its partner network, such as hotel discounts, airline tickets, or other travel-related services.

CLEAR does not bypass you from participating in security processes, including passing your bags through X-rays or walking through a metal detector. As a CLEAR member, your eyes will speed you through the participating airport and stadium identification lines faster.

With CLEAR, you can breeze through the identification inspection process at more than 70 airports and sports venues nationwide. CLEAR members can speed through the entire security process from start to finish in less than 5 minutes on average since CLEAR lanes allow members to proceed to the very front of the security queues.

Take, for example, an airport like Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), where many travelers have TSA PreCheck due to being government workers. TSA PreCheck and regular security lines can be long, especially during peak travel periods like Monday morning or Friday afternoon.

With CLEAR, once your ID matches your boarding pass, you will proceed to the front of the security lines. So, no matter how long the TSA PreCheck or standard security lines are, once you’re done with the CLEAR process, you head straight to the front, right where you put your bags into the scanner.

This process of having your eye scanned and matched to your boarding pass rarely (if ever) takes longer than about 2 minutes, at which point you’ll proceed through the metal detector like normal to complete the rest of your screening process.

CLEAR has also partnered with Uber for a Home to Gate program via the CLEAR app, where users can track security wait times and call an Uber in time to take them to the airport and get through security in perfect timing for their flight.

CLEAR is a great way to speed to the front of any long security queues. Processing only takes a few moments.

Another way to save even more time is by using Reserve by CLEAR . This program, available at select airports, allows you to enter your flight information to reserve a time to go through security. When you arrive at the airport, you can scan your QR code (in an email after you reserve your spot) in the specially marked Reserve Lane to proceed through the standard security line without waiting.

How To Use CLEAR at the Airport

Here are the easy steps to use CLEAR:

• Get in the CLEAR lane. Usually, these are right next to the regular security lines.
• You’ll check in  at a pod using an iris scan as verification. An ambassador will open the pod and escort you to the checkpoint.
• Once you’re finished verifying your identity, you can put your ID away . You won’t need to show this to the TSA officer.
• You’ll proceed through the TSA checkpoint as normal . If you have TSA PreCheck, you can use those lanes; otherwise, you’ll use the regular lanes.

If you have TSA PreCheck, CLEAR staff will see the TSA PreCheck eligibility on your boarding pass and escort you to TSA PreCheck expedited lanes for screening.

By visiting the CLEAR website before your upcoming flight, you can find out which CLEAR lanes are next to a TSA PreCheck.

CLEAR does not come with TSA PreCheck. For the best possible travel experience, use a premium credit card to get Global Entry membership for free , which also comes with TSA PreCheck. Then, enroll in CLEAR separately.

Once you are a CLEAR member, just log into your account to access your Family Plan. Here, you can add up to 3 adult family members at $99 each per year.

Children under 18 who are accompanied by a CLEAR member have access to the CLEAR lane free of charge, so you don’t need to add them to your account. Kids this age don’t need identification when traveling through the TSA checkpoint, which is why CLEAR allows them to proceed.

At stadiums, you can take 1 person with you in CLEAR security lanes, so you don’t need a second membership for a companion in those scenarios.

Currently, CLEAR is only available to citizens and legal permanent of the U.S.

Currently, members can utilize CLEAR at 70+ stadiums and airports that cover much of the country’s domestic departure traffic. Opening times and specific location information for each checkpoint are available on the CLEAR website .

All full membership CLEAR users are eligible to access CLEAR at sports venues. If you don’t have a normal CLEAR membership, you can enroll in a special CLEAR Sports version , which is free but only valid at sports stadiums and not at airports.

Starting your free online Sports enrollment is easy and can be finished in just a few minutes at any CLEAR location. You can also upgrade your membership to enjoy CLEAR airport access by selecting “Sports + Airports” when enrolling (this requires a fee).

Using the CLEAR mobile app , you can track security wait times, order an Uber via Home to Gate, apply for a new membership, enter stadiums and concert venues, or store health information as part of a health pass system.

Using CLEAR Health Pass , you can upload vaccination information, medical history, and other pertinent data to share with others. CLEAR can verify this information, which can be used for businesses or other entities to trust that the medical information being shared is truthful.

CLEAR Application

Applying for CLEAR only takes a few minutes; no appointment is necessary. You can begin the application online to save more time. Once enrolled, you can begin using CLEAR that same day.

You do not need an appointment to enroll in CLEAR. Unlike Global Entry or other expedited traveler programs, CLEAR enrollment can be done at the airport.

CLEAR is open to individuals 18 and older. For enrolling, you’ll need one of the following photo identification forms. All identification must be valid, unexpired, unamended, and contain a photo:

• U.S. driver’s license
• U.S. passport
• U.S. passport card
• U.S.-issued permanent resident card
• State-issued ID
• U.S. military ID

If you were a former member of the old CLEAR program, CLEAR will honor whatever time remains on that account. This will be credited to you when you reactivate your account by logging in to your account .

Don’t remember your original password? Just follow the instructions for establishing a new one. The CLEAR program no longer uses CLEAR cards (if you were issued one). Once you reactivate your account, you can use the CLEAR lanes immediately.

To renew an existing CLEAR membership, log in to your account . After selecting Reactivate, you’ll be set — you don’t have to update your biometrics because CLEAR will still have them on file. You will just need to pay the annual membership fee.

CLEAR does not include TSA PreCheck itself, but it can work alongside TSA PreCheck. A CLEAR member can hold TSA PreCheck and then be admitted into the TSA PreCheck lanes once they pass through the identification check in the designated CLEAR lanes.

How do I get CLEAR at an airport?

To sign up for CLEAR, you can enroll at any participating airport, where you’ll sign up on a pod with the assistance of a CLEAR ambassador. You can also sign up online and then finish the enrollment process in person at the airport. In either scenario, you must physically complete the process at a CLEAR pod where your biometric data will be scanned.

Does CLEAR still have a partnership with Hertz?

No. CLEAR and Hertz have discontinued their partnership due to Hertz’s bankruptcy and no longer offer The Hertz Fast Lane Powered by CLEAR.

7 ways to get free or discounted TSA PreCheck, Global Entry and Clear

As we head into the holiday season, there's no better time to arm yourself with tools to pass through the airport as quickly as possible — specifically the TSA security line at U.S. airports and the customs line when coming back from abroad.

I've written extensively about TSA PreCheck and Clear , both of which help travelers speed through TSA security.

PreCheck users pass through security using a dedicated line for PreCheck users only, in which they do not have to remove their shoes, laptop, liquids, belt or light jacket like passengers in the regular TSA line.

Like TSA PreCheck, Clear users also begin the security process in a Clear-only lane, where they are biometrically identified via fingerprint or iris scans, sparing them from having to show their ID anytime during security screening. Users are then taken to the front of the line for the security screening machines (either the front of the PreCheck screening line for those with Clear and PreCheck, or the front of the normal TSA screening line).

The third program, Global Entry , is useful for frequent international travelers, as it gives preapproved, low-risk travelers expedited clearance upon arrival to the U.S. from abroad. Global Entry users can enter the country through automated kiosks at 75-plus airports .

Enrollment in the three programs costs money, including an annual fee for Clear. Memberships to TSA PreCheck and Global Entry last five years each.

While these programs may be worth their retail price tags in their own right, there's no need to pay full price if you don't have to.

How much do TSA PreCheck, Global Entry and Clear cost?

Normally, a five-year membership to TSA PreCheck costs $78 to $85, while five years of Global Entry runs you $100.

Two providers manage TSA applications. You'll pay $78 to apply through IDEMIA and $85 through Telos . Renewing costs $70 if you do it online through either provider.

If you have a Global Entry membership, you also receive the benefits of TSA PreCheck. Essentially, you reap the benefits of both programs for an extra $22 every five years.

An annual membership to Clear is $189. Together, using all these programs can add up if you don't take advantage of available discounts and credits.

'Free' TSA PreCheck and Global Entry via credit cards

Currently, there are 39 cobranded airline, hotel and other credit cards offering up to $100 in statement credit reimbursement for the application fees associated with Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. This credit is typically available every four to five years, though you should check the terms for your specific card for the exact frequency.

Your miles can pay for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry

In addition to the aforementioned cards offering credits for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, some loyalty programs allow members to use points or miles in exchange for covering the membership fees. While these are options, the return per point is less than TPG point valuations , so they're not our top picks for ways to save on these memberships.

Those programs include:

• Radisson Rewards Americas : Members can redeem 65,000 points for an $85 application credit to TSA PreCheck only
• Orbitz Rewards: Platinum members get a free TSA PreCheck membership every five years
• Marriott Bonvoy : Members can redeem 25,000 points for an $85 application credit

'Free' Clear memberships via credit cards

Since Clear costs $189 per year instead of $85 to $100 every five years, there aren't nearly as many credit cards that provide a free Clear Plus membership as there are with the others. However, there are a few options if you want your travel credit card to pay for your Clear Plus membership.

They include:

• The Platinum Card from American Express
• The Business Platinum Card from American Express
• The Centurion Card from American Express
• American Express® Green Card
• Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

Occasionally, there are targeted Amex Offers covering the cost of Clear Plus membership for those with different American Express cards, so keep your eyes peeled for limited-time offers like that.

Credit cards that save you money on Clear

If you don't have a credit card that makes Clear completely free with statement credits, some additional credit cards can at least reduce your annual Clear membership cost:

Save on Clear with a frequent flyer membership

United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines offer their frequent flyers free or discounted memberships to Clear.

Discounts from Delta SkyMiles

Top-tier Delta Diamond Medallion members can get Clear for free. The airline's Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion members can pay a reduced price of $149. The same price applies to those without a Delta credit card .

All Delta SkyMiles members without elite status can get a discounted membership for $179 — a $10 discount.

Similarly, United's Premier 1K members are entitled to free memberships in Clear, while United MileagePlus Platinum, Gold and Silver members can pay $149. Those with a United credit card receive this same discount.

United MileagePlus members without status can access Clear for $179 per year.

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members can enroll in Clear at a slightly discounted rate of $179 annually.

Mileage Plan members who sign up for Clear will also receive bonus miles: MVP, MVP Gold, MVP Gold 75K and MVP Gold 100K members will receive 1,500 miles, plus an additional 1,250 miles each year they renew.

Clear discounts for families and students

For families, children under 18 can pass through Clear with you for free without needing to scan their eyes or fingerprints.

College students can use a discounted student Clear rate of $60 per year for up to four years.

Clear also has a family plan , and you can add up to three adults to your primary membership for $99 per additional person per year without incurring another full $189 fee for each person every year.

FlyClear was the first version of the Registered Traveler Program that is now operating as CLEAR on ClearMe.com.

The program was operated by Verified Identity Pass and reached over 200,000 members before it ceased operations on June 22, 2009.

In 2008 a security breach of member private data occurred and subsequently created several issues for the program such as bad PR, legal expenses, and some loss of confidence from its members.

Heading to a game can be exhilarating—but if you’ve ever seen the long lines to get in, you can imagine how that excitement wanes as you’re standing outside, sometimes in sweltering heat, instead of getting through to your seats.

CLEAR has partnered with over a dozen locations in the U.S. to allow members quick access to bypass the normal long lines and get inside to enjoy the game quicker than ever before. And, while you might be familiar with the paid CLEAR Plus membership that helps you speed through the airport, you can access CLEAR Sports and Events for free.

What is CLEAR?

CLEAR was designed as a biometric program allowing travelers who pay a membership fee and pass a simple check to bypass the standard ID verification at security checkpoints in airports. 

A major choke point in airports is almost always the security line, and CLEAR allows its members to either scan their eyes or their fingerprints to verify that they are who they say they are. The CLEAR lines are typically much shorter, and you get to bypass the long security wait, head to the front, show the TSA officer your boarding pass, and you’re on your way.

Note that to use CLEAR to speed through the airport, you need a CLEAR Plus membership, which typically costs $189 per year for an individual or $189 a year plus $99 per person for a family membership. But there’s good news on two fronts—first, the right credit card might cover your CLEAR Plus subscription. For example, the American Express® Green Card charges a modest $150 annual fee and offers a credit of up to $189 annually to reimburse CLEAR Plus.

The second thing to get excited about is that you don’t need CLEAR Plus to use CLEAR at eligible stadiums and arenas. You just need the free membership option and the mobile app.

What is CLEAR for Stadiums and Arenas?

Whether you’re a CLEAR Plus airport member, or just have a complimentary membership after signing up for the CLEAR app, you get access to CLEAR for Sports and Events. The free designated CLEAR lanes at stadiums allow all members to enter the various participating venues faster through these exclusive entrances.

The CLEAR lanes aren’t at each entrance at the arenas and stadiums, but there will typically be one or two special areas at the events that allow you fast, almost unfettered access.

How do I use CLEAR at stadiums?

The process couldn’t be any easier. You’ll need the CLEAR app, but the process is very straightforward.

First, download the CLEAR app (there’s no charge for this) and navigate to the Sports and Events tab.

Next, click “Get Started” and follow the enrollment steps. You’ll need to take a quick selfie to unlock the QR code in the app. This QR code is what you’ll show to the attendant to get through—then you can wave at everyone back waiting in the other security lines.

Where can I use CLEAR at stadiums and events?

Currently there are more than 15 locations across the U.S. that you can utilize your CLEAR app and get through to your game or event quicker than ever before.

Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, NV

The special entry lanes are at North Entry via lanes 49 and 50. CLEAR Lane is available at all Raiders home games, concerts, and events.

BMO Stadium, Los Angeles, CA

There are two entrances, at both the Northeast gate and the Northwest gates. CLEAR Lanes are available at Los Angeles FC and Angel City FC home games and select events.

Ball Arena, Denver, CO

You’ll find CLEAR at the Altitude Authentics entrance. If you’re heading to a Nuggets or Avalanche game or a special event, CLEAR will be open.

Barclays Center, New York, NY

If you’re heading inside from the Flatbush Avenue entrance, you’ll see both the normal and CLEAR entrances. CLEAR Lane is available at Nets and Liberty home games and all concerts and events.

Capital One Arena, Washington, DC

Head over to the 7th & G street at Gallery Place to find the CLEAR dedicated lane. CLEAR Lane is available at all Capitals and Wizards home games.

Chase Center, San Francisco, CA

Of all the entrances at the Chase Center, only the West entrance has the CLEAR lane. Warriors home games, concerts, and special events all will have CLEAR Lane access.

Coors Field, Denver, CO

Of all the gates at Coors Field, if you’re heading to the C gate, you’ll be rewarded with a CLEAR lane. Expect your lanes to be available at all Rockies home games, concerts, and events.

Kayesa Center, Miami, FL

Two options for CLEAR exist for the Miami Heat gates, at both gates 1 and 2. If the Heat are playing at home, the lanes will be open.

Lumen Field, Seattle, WA

The Seahawks and the Sounders both share Lumen Field in the Emerald City, and gate 3 holds your CLEAR experience. The CLEAR lane might not be available for special events, as its limited to only the home games for the sports teams.

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

Chase B and Chase C at the MSG are your entrances. Look for them off of 8th avenue. CLEAR Lanes are available at all Rangers and Knicks home games, concerts, and events which is a big deal, considering the amount of special events that MSG holds.

Nationals Park, Washington, DC

Head to the center field gate with your QR code for fast access to Nationals Park. CLEAR Lane is available only for Nationals home games.

Oracle Park, San Francisco, CA

The Willie Mays Plaza houses the CLEAR entrance for anything happening at the Oracle Park. The CLEAR lane will be open for baseball games, but also for concerts and special events.

SAP Center, San Jose, CA

CLEAR access is at the South Gate for the SAP Center in San Jose, CA. If the Sharks are playing hockey at home, CLEAR has you covered.

SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles, CA

CLEAR can be found at gate 9 at the South Entrance at the SoFi stadium. Whether you’re seeing the Chargers or the Rams play, or heading to a concert or special event, expect to virtually fly through.

State Farm Arena, Atlanta, GA

Head straight down to your next Atlanta Hawks game at check out the CLEAR entrance at Gate 6. CLEAR Lane is available at all Hawks home games, concerts, and events.

T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, NV

Skip the line and the red velvet rope.  Feel like a VIP in Vegas at the CLEAR lanes at the Hyde Suite VIP entrance. Since this arena is a multi use event space, you’ll be able to have CLEAR access for all Vegas Golden Knights home games and all concerts and events.

Yankee Stadium, New York, NY

Head on over to the Babe Ruth Plaza and Suite entrance and gate 4 for your CLEAR access. CLEAR Lanes are available at all Yankees and New York City FC home games, concerts, and events.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cost extra to use clear at stadiums.

Using CLEAR at stadiums is absolutely free, so long as you’re a member and have the CLEAR app downloaded on your phone. You don’t need to be a CLEAR Plus airport member in order to use this service, but if you are, it’s included via your app.

Can I bring a friend with me through CLEAR at stadiums?

Unlike at the airport where every person using CLEAR must be a paid member, you’re allowed to bring one friend with you through the entrance at each stadium where CLEAR has a lane. Children under the age of 18 don’t need a pass and can always come through when accompanied by an adult.

Is using CLEAR worth it for stadiums and events?

Using CLEAR helps you skip the line to enjoy quick access to your event—but since CLEAR lanes are limited to certain entrances, plan out your path into the venue strategically. Stadiums can be pretty big, so if your seat is on the complete opposite side of the entrance that offers CLEAR, it may not be worth the extra walk.

How many stadiums and arenas offer CLEAR access?

At the time of this writing, 17 stadiums and arenas offer CLEAR lanes. These include Madison Square Garden in New York City, the Kaseya Center in Miami, and more.

Does my free CLEAR membership provide airport benefits?

While a free CLEAR membership can get you into eligible stadiums faster, it does not provide any airport benefits. For that, you need the paid CLEAR Plus plan. However, certain credit cards will reimburse you for charging a CLEAR membership to your account. 

The Amex Green, mentioned above, is an affordable option. For those able to make use of more extensive travel benefits and tolerate a higher annual fee, the The Platinum Card® from American Express provides a $189 yearly credit for CLEAR (in exchange for an annual fee of $695).

Iran warns its response will be "stronger and more resolute" if Israel retaliates following latest strikes

Iran has warned that it will respond with more force if Israel retaliates over this weekend's strikes, which Tehran said were themselves a reply to an Israeli attack earlier this month on its embassy complex in Syria's capital Damascus.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent right of self-defense when required," Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said in a statement.

Citing self-defense against repeated Israeli military aggressions, Iravani said the strikes were specifically in retaliation to an Israeli attack on April 1 against what Iran says were diplomatic facilities in Damascus.

Iran claims the attack violated international law and led to the death of seven Iranian military advisors, including key commanders from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The statement also criticizes the United Nations Security Council for “failing to uphold international peace,” allowing Israel to “breach” established international norms and “escalate” regional tensions.

Additional context: Israel has carried out numerous strikes on Iran-backed targets in Syria, often targeting weapons shipments allegedly intended for Hezbollah, a powerful Iranian proxy in Lebanon. 

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the April 1 attack which destroyed an Iranian consulate building in the capital Damascus, including Mohammed Reza Zahedi, a top Revolutionary Guards commander.

However an Israel Defense Forces spokesman told CNN that their intelligence showed the building was not a consulate and was instead “a military building of Quds forces disguised as a civilian building.”

China expresses 'deep concern', calls for ceasefire

China has expressed "deep concern" over the "current escalation" following Iran's attack on Israel, according to a spokesperson for its Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, adding that it is a "spillover of the Gaza conflict" and a ceasefire should be implemented without delay.

In a statement, China called "on relevant parties to exercise calm and restraint to prevent further escalations."

"The ongoing situation is the latest spillover of the Gaza conflict," the spokesperson said, adding that a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas should be implemented without any more delay.

Beijing did not  name or condemn Hamas  in the wake of the initial October 7 attacks. Since then, it has condemned the war and been a vocal  proponent of an immediate ceasefire  and the implementation of a “two-state” solution.

Last month, Chinese diplomat Wang Kejian met Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar, the first meeting between a Chinese and Hamas official publicly acknowledged by Beijing since the outbreak of the  war in Gaza .

Wang’s visit follows efforts by Beijing to step up its profile as a  peace broker in the Middle East conflict.

US forces intercepted 70+ drones and at least three ballistic missiles, US officials say

US forces intercepted more than 70 one-way attack drones and at least three ballistic missiles during Iran's attack on Israel, according to two US officials familiar with the situation.

The ballistic missiles were intercepted by warships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, one of the officials said. Iran launched more than 100 ballistic missiles in total at Israel, according to a senior administration official.

The US Navy currently has two destroyers in that area, both are guided missile destroyers capable of intercepting missile and drone launches.

US fighter jets were also part of the response to Iran’s attack on Saturday and shot down drones launched towards Israel, another US official told CNN.

Biden to meet with G7 leaders Sunday as he condemns Iran's "brazen attack"

US President Joe Biden will meet with G7 leaders Sunday “to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack,” according to a statement released by the White House. 

“My team will engage with their counterparts across the region. And we will stay in close touch with Israel’s leaders,” the statement from Biden reads. “And while we have not seen attacks on our forces or facilities today, we will remain vigilant to all threats and will not hesitate to take all necessary action to protect our people.”

US defensive assets moved to the region earlier this week and “helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles,” according to the statement.

Biden also spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu following Saturday’s attack “to reaffirm America’s ironclad commitment to the security of Israel.” 

United Airlines cancels three Middle East flights

At least three United Airlines flights headed to or departing from the Middle East have been canceled amid the ongoing conflict unfolding between Iran and Israel.

On Saturday a flight from Newark, New Jersey to Tel Aviv, a flight from Washington D.C. to Amman, Jordan, and one from Dubai to Newark were canceled, the airline told CNN in a statement.

There have been no changes to any Sunday flights for United as of Saturday night, according to the airline. 

CNN has reached out to other airlines regarding cancellations.

Biden told Netanyahu US will not participate in offensive operations against Iran, US official says

The US will not participate in any offensive operations against Iran, US President Joe Biden has made clear to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a senior administration official told CNN.

The comments were relayed during the phone call that the two leaders shared in the aftermath of Iran's retaliatory strikes against Israel.

Biden tells Netanyahu tonight was a win, nothing of "value" hit in Israel, US official says 

Israel should consider tonight a win because the current US assessment is that Iran’s attacks had been largely unsuccessful and demonstrated Israel’s superior military capability, President Joe Biden told Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in their phone call, a senior administration official told CNN.

The US’s assessment tonight was that almost all of the drones and missiles – including more than 100 ballistic missiles -- launched by Iran had been knocked out of the sky. No cruise missile made impact, the official said, and nothing of “value” was hit. 

Bolton: 'Passivity at this point for Israel would be a big mistake'

John Bolton, the former US national security adviser and ambassador to the UN, said “passivity at this point for Israel would be a big mistake,” warning of more attacks. 

“This is not time to play academic games and message and signal. This is a question of power,” Bolton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. "If they came from a different location containing nuclear warheads, Israel might not be so lucky.”

A known Iran policy hawk, Bolton served in senior national security positions during the Trump and Bush administrations. A neoconservative, Bolton has in the past advocated war with Iran and a pre-emptive strike on North Korea.

In 2022, he was the target of an alleged assassination attempt orchestrated by a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. 

He has warned against underestimating Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran has said is for peaceful purposes only.

“I think we have enough experience with faulty intelligence by now, not to be so sure, not to know how much of Iran’s uranium enrichment program is really being conducted under a mountain in North Korea,” Bolton said.

CHP finally clears pro-Palestinian protesters from I-880 in Oakland; all lanes reopened

Authorities were finally able to clear two separate pro-Palestinian protests that closed lanes on I-880 in Oakland in both directions for hours starting Monday morning, according to CHP.

The protest was among multiple demonstrations blocking freeway traffic in the Bay Area, with another group of activists blocking southbound traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge starting at around 8 a.m.  That protest would shut down the entire span.

CHP initially reported an accident at 23rd Ave. at around 6:15 a.m. blocking northbound lanes of the freeway, according to a sig-alert.

A short time later, KCBS Traffic posted on social media that there was additionally a protest in the area that blocked all northbound lanes.

The protest was in the area of 5th Ave., according to reports.

The post said there were reports of barrels in the roadway as well as people on lawn chairs sitting between the barrels that were all chained together. The post did not indicate what was being protested, but there were reports of a banner being displayed that read "A-15 Economic blockade for a free Palestine."

CHP confirmed there were about 15 protesters blocking northbound 880. Video from the area indicated that southbound lanes were not blocked, though traffic was slowing as cars passed the protest.

CHP and Oakland police officers were at the scene in force to respond to the protest and clear lanes.

As of shortly after 7 a.m., the back-up on I-880 was stretching from Oakland to San Leandro.

Video showed police working to cut through the chains and steel barrels that the protesters were linking arms through so they can safely be removed.

At around 8:15 a.m., another group of protesters blocked the southbound direction of I-880 at 7th Street near the Port of Oakland and Jack London Square. The group of demonstrators on foot at that location grew to approximately 300 over the course of the morning, CHP said later.

The protests also closed all lanes of the eastbound and westbound I-80 connector ramps to southbound I-880 in Oakland.   

By 11 a.m., one lane of northbound 880 near the 23rd Avenue protest has reopened and one lane of southbound 880 near the 7th Street protest had reopened.

Shortly before 12 p.m., CHP confirmed that two lanes of traffic in the northbound direction had been reopened hours after the protest started. It was still another 90 minutes before authorities were able to completely reopen the northbound lanes.

At around 12:40 p.m., authorities said one lane of southbound I-880 between 7th and Broadway had reopened.

A short time later, it appeared CHP had cleared the protesters from the southbound lanes of I-880, backing them down onto freeway onramps. CHP did not announced that all southbound lanes of I-880 reopened until around 2:15 p.m. The eastbound and westbound I-80 connector ramps to southbound I-880 were reopened at about 2:40 p.m. A total of five protesters were arrested among the demonstrators who blocked traffic on southbound I-880.

Among those stuck in the backup included Sal Valencia, a construction worker who had been rushing to bring materials to a job in Hayward when he became stuck.

"At the beginning I was kind of afraid, I didn't know what was going on. I was afraid for my life." Valencia said.

He was stuck on the freeway for a total of five hours. 

"Basically this is not fair for a lot of people that are going to work, They're trying to make some money and look what happened? This is just, to be honest, ridiculous," Valencia went on to say.

Valencia, who said he has not followed the events in the Middle East, believed that the protesters were not achieving their goals.

"It's not helping. To me, this is not helping," he said.

During an afternoon press conference to address CHP response to the demonstrations, a spokesperson said that the protesters made a coordinated effort with the northbound I-880 blockade, using a truck to transport 55-gallon drums filled with cement, rebar and heavy-duty chains to make it more difficult for law enforcement to remove the activists from the roadway.

The demonstration blocking northbound I-880 near the Embarcadero began at about 6 a.m. CHP were able to initially reopen lanes at 10 a.m. with all lanes reopened by 1:15 p.m. A total of seven protesters were arrested at that location. 

The protesters arrested are facing a variety of charges, including unlawful assembly, remaining at an unlawful assembly, refusing to comply with a lawful order, unlawful stopping on a bridge, unlawfully being a pedestrian on a freeway, impeding an officer, conspiracy to commit a crime and false imprisonment. 

The actions were planned as part of an "economic blockade" coordinated with similar protests around the world with disruptions happening  in New York and  Chicago . Protesters are hoping to target "the global economy for its complicity in Israel's ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people," organizers under the banner A15Action said.  

Back in November, a large group of protesters shut down the westbound Bay Bridge  as President Joe Biden and other world leaders visited the Bay Area for the APEC Summit. Last month, dozens of those protesters were able to reach a deal with a judge to avoid jail time . 

A similar protest blocked traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge last February.  

According to Bay City News Service, an additional protest is planned for noon at UN Plaza and Market and Hyde streets in San Francisco, by the Group Code Pink. An action by the A15Action group is also planned at 5:30 p.m. at the Tesla factory in Fremont.

Israel delays Rafah offensive as it weighs response to Iranian attack. Catch up here

Israel was set to take its first steps toward a  ground offensive in Rafah  this week, but has delayed those plans as it mulls a response to Iran’s attack, two Israeli sources have told CNN.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long stressed the importance of invading Rafah to dismantle Hamas’s remaining battalions, despite significant international pressure to call off an all-out ground offensive. But, a military response that risks escalating the conflict with Iran further would pull the military’s attention and resources away from Gaza.

Here's what to know if you're just joining our coverage:

• War cabinet meeting : Israel's war cabinet reviewed military plans for a potential response against Iran, an official said. The cabinet remains determined to act , but it's not clear if a decision has been made. Israel has vowed to "exact a price" after the unprecedented large-scale drone and missile attack .
• White House urges de-escalation: US President Joe Biden is focusing on preventing Iran's attack from spiraling into a wider regional conflict , spokesperson John Kirby said. Kirby said ultimately the US wanted tensions to de-escalate.
• Countries urge restraint : Biden's sentiment is echoed by various countries who are urging Israel and Iran to avoid further confrontation that could plunge the area deeper into conflict. Indonesia, Malaysia , Jordan , Germany , the UK , South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Somalia — among others — have all expressed concern about rising tension in the region.
• Iran's stance : Iran maintains its attack on Israel was a "legitimate" and “responsible” reaction , the Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said.
• Flight operations resume : Airports in the Iranian capital of Tehran resumed flights at 6:00 a.m. local time on Monday, according to Iran's state-aligned Tasnim news agency.
• Israel warns Palestinians to avoid the north : After thousands of Palestinians attempted to return to their homes in northern Gaza, Israel's military warned it was a "dangerous combat zone" through social media and airdropped leaflets .
• Gaza death toll : The Health Ministry in Gaza says that 68 people were killed in the territory over the past 24 hours as a result of Israeli military operations. A further 94 were injured. CNN cannot verify the figures, and the Ministry does not provide a breakdown of civilians and fighters among the casualties. The Ministry said that since October 7, 33,797 people have been killed and 76,465 injured.
• West Bank shooting: Israeli gunfire killed one person and critically wounded another in Nablus , in the occupied West Bank, on Monday, the Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health said. Israeli police described the man as a "terrorist" and said he threw an explosive device at their forces.
• Palestinians released : Israeli authorities have released 150 people previously detained in Gaza according to the Palestinian General Authority for Crossings and borders on Monday. Two of the detainees were ambulance workers for the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.
• Israeli soldiers wounded : An explosion near the northern border has injured four Israeli soldiers , one severely, the military says.
• Gaza aid : The Israeli government agency that coordinates the delivery of aid into Gaza says that a new crossing in the north has again been used to deliver food aid .
• Hostage talks: Hamas has slashed the number of hostages it is willing to release during the first phase of a ceasefire deal by more than half, from 40 down to 20, an Israeli source close to the negotiations said. This represents a significant step backward in the talks.

2 Palestinian farmers killed after confrontation with Israeli settlers near West Bank city of Nablus

Two Palestinians were killed Monday south of the West Bank city of Nablus, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.

The Palestinian official news agency WAFA, citing a local official, said the two were killed by Israeli settlers in Khirbet at-Tawil, which is near the settlement of Gitit. 

According to WAFA, Israeli settlers attacked and killed two farmers who were tending their farmland. 

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah identified the deceased as Abdul Rahman Maher Bani Fadel, 30, and Muhammad Ashraf Bani Jame, 21.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement it received a report Monday "about a Palestinian suspect who attacked a Jewish shepherd" in the Gitit area in the West Bank's Jordan Valley. "A violent confrontation developed there between Palestinians and Israeli citizens," the statement said. 

When IDF forces arrived, they "worked to disperse the confrontation," and "during the incident, two Palestinians were killed," the statement said. 

A preliminary investigation into the shooting appears that IDF forces did not do it, the statement concluded. 

The IDF and the Israel police are investigating the incident, the IDF spokesperson added.

China notes Iran's position on Israel attack and does not condemn strikes

China said it noted Iran’s statement that the actions against Israel were an “exercise of the right of self-defense” during a phone call between the foreign ministers of the two nations on Monday, and did not condemn the weekend strikes.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian that China condemned the attack on a consulate building in the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus, according to a statement issued by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese foreign minister added the incident “seriously violates international law and is unacceptable.”

“China has noted Iran's statement that the actions it took were limited and it was an exercise of the right of self-defense in response to the attack on the embassy building,” the statement said. “The current regional situation is very sensitive, and Iran is willing to exercise restraint and has no intention of further escalating the situation,” the statement added, quoting Amir-Abdollahian.

Separately, China’s Special Envoy on the Middle East, Zhai Jun, met with Irit Ben-Abba Vitale, Israel’s Ambassador to China, on Monday, in which the latter expressed Israel's position and concerns on the conflict in Gaza.

Zhai said China was “deeply concerned about the current escalation of regional tensions, and conflicts and bloodshed serve the interests of no one.”

“What is pressing now is to achieve an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, ensure humanitarian aid, release all detained personnel as soon as possible, and achieve a political settlement of the Palestinian question based on the two-state solution for the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine,” a statement from the foreign ministry said.

15 more bodies recovered from around Gaza's Al-Shifa Hospital as exhumation process continues

Fifteen bodies were recovered Monday from around Al-Shifa Hospital following the withdrawal of the Israeli military from the area two weeks ago, Gaza residents and medical crews told CNN.

Health workers and residents in northern Gaza have been searching for what they believe are mass graves and looking for their loved ones after they said Israeli forces killed hundreds of Palestinians and left their bodies to decompose during their two-week siege of the complex.

Hundreds of bodies have been recovered from areas around the hospital complex since the siege ended April 1, a Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson told CNN last week.

Video filmed by CNN Monday shows medical workers, some wearing UN-marked vests walking around the site over mounds of sand, digging up bodies. White body bags can be seen on the side of the excavation site, some marked with text that read “unidentified body” and some with names of people on them.

“Today I bid farewell to my mother who was inside Al-Shifa Hospital during the invasion and attack by the vicious Israeli occupation on this medical complex that has been turned into a big mass of rubble,” Mohammad Al-Khateeb, a resident of Gaza told CNN. “The Israeli military deprived patients, nurses, doctors and the displaced of water, medicine and food."

 Al-Khateeb’s mother, Khawala Al-Khateeb, was 75 years old when she was brought to the hospital three days before the Israeli military siege on the complex and surrounding neighborhood of Al-Rimal, and was killed three days after, he said.

CNN has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for comment on these allegations but has not received a response.

Waleed Abu-Laila told CNN he had been searching for his mother since the Israeli siege on the hospital ended on April 1. On Monday, he said he found her body and was only able to identify her "from the specific markings on her feet and hands" from when she had a toe and finger amputated back in November.

“The hospital was blocked from all sides and there were bodies were scattered all over, squashed on the streets from the tank rails. When I got a call to come check the unidentified bodies, I opened a bag that was marked 'unidentified' and immediately found my mother’s body decomposed,” he said.

Hamas lowers number of hostages it's willing to release as part of a ceasefire deal, Israeli source says

Hamas has slashed the number of hostages it is willing to release during the first phase of a ceasefire deal by more than half, an Israeli source close to the negotiations said.

In its latest counterproposal, Hamas offered to release fewer than 20 hostages in exchange for a six-week ceasefire, more than halving the number of 40 hostages that has been the basis of negotiations for months now, representing a significant step backward in the talks.

A senior Biden administration official confirmed that Hamas is focused on those 20 for the first phase of a potential ceasefire deal. The official also confirmed Hamas is telling mediators that it only has around 20 remaining hostages who are women or sick, wounded and elderly men.

Hamas also called for the release of more Palestinian prisoners in exchange for fewer hostages, the source said, as well as a higher number of prisoners serving life sentences.

The Israeli source said the latest Hamas counterproposal signals that Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader in Gaza, does not want a deal, seeking to exploit fissures between the US and Israel over Israeli military operations in Gaza and domestic pressure on the Israeli government.

Basem Naim, a Hamas spokesperson, said Hamas had proposed “releasing (three) captured Israelis each week,” but said “no one is talking about final numbers.”

Beyond the ratio of Palestinian prisoners, Hamas is continuing to demand assurances about a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and unrestricted access for Palestinians to return to northern Gaza.

“I think part of this is Hamas thinks they're winning. Because their definition of success is survival and they've survived so far,” the Biden official said. “The longer the conflict has gone on the more recalcitrant Hamas has become rather than the other way around.”

Israeli prime minister says international community must "stand united in resisting this Iranian aggression"

It's imperative the international community "stand united in resisting this Iranian aggression, which threatens world peace," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a Monday statement from his office on X .

Netanyahu added:

“Directly and through its terror proxies Hamas and others, Iran is conducting a full-scale campaign of aggression that threatens not only Israel but the entire Middle East.”

Netanyahu's comments follow an Iranian strike against Israel over the weekend in which more than 300 missiles and drones were launched.

Tehran said the attack was in retaliation for a deadly Israeli attack against a consulate building in the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus.

Golden Gate Bridge reopens after protestors against the war in Gaza block traffic

The Golden Gate Bridge has reopened after demonstrators protesting the war in Gaza shut down the busy roadway Monday morning, California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Barclay told CNN. 

Traffic is beginning to flow again as both sides of the bridge reopened, Barclay added. 

Earlier in the day, protestors also blocked Interstate 880 in Oakland and the roadway remains impacted, Barclay said. The northbound side of the interstate is almost completely clear, while the southbound side remains closed, the officer detailed. Protests continue on the interstate, aerial and ground video from CNN affiliate KGO showed .

“Arrests have been made, and are continuing to be made,” Barclay said in an email early Monday. 

Before the law enforcement response, protesters held signs, including one that read “Stop the world for Gaza.”

I-880 reopened traffic later Monday, California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel told CNN. Protesters are still demonstrating on city streets near the interstate, the officer added. 

Montiel was not able to say how many people were arrested in the incident.

US military assets remain in Middle East as Israel debates response to Iran attack, Pentagon says

Additional US military assets that had been moved into the Middle East before Iran’s attack on Israel remain in place, Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said Monday.

Ryder's comments come as Israel debates possible retaliation to Iran’s attack. 

"As (Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin) has said, both publicly and privately, we don't want to see escalation, but we obviously will take necessary measures to protect our forces in the region and as was demonstrated over the weekend, we'll take necessary measures to defend Israel," Ryder said.
