‘Chicago’ has plenty of razzle, needs a little more dazzle in 25th anniversary tour
The show, with a score by legendary composer john kander, book by fred ebb and bob fosse, and lyrics by ebb, has remarkable staying power..
The cast of “Chicago” performs “Cell Block Tango” in the 25th anniversary touring production of the musical, now playing at the CIBS Theatre.

Does “Chicago” still have that old razzle-dazzle?
That’s the crucial question on which the 25th anniversary tour of the nearly 50-year-old musical hangs its Fossefied hat, through Jan. 29 at the CIBC Theatre.
Inarguably, the show with a score by legendary composer John Kander, book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, and lyrics by Ebb, has remarkable staying power.
The anniversary tour production is based on a 1996 Broadway reboot of the show’s original staging, directed and choreographed by Fosse in 1975. Fosse’s work looms large here, in director Tania Nardini’s and choreographer Gary Chryst’s “recreation,” just as it did over that reboot by the director/choreographer team of Walter Bobbie and Ann Reinking.
Still, this “Chicago” is more facsimile than replica of its quarter-century-old inspiration. It’s looking a bit frayed around its sleek, sinewy edges. It remains an entertaining rendition of a brilliant show, but the razzle-dazzle is a few sequins short.
More than anything, the decadent story of “Chicago” (based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins) is a satire on pop culture’s endlessly lurid fascination with, per the show’s opening line, “murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery — all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts.”
The plot follows aspiring showgirls and celebrity murderesses Velma Kelly (Logan Floyd) and Roxie Hart (Katie Frieden) through bedrooms, dance halls, gin joints, courtrooms, jails and press conferences, as they navigate the fickle hand of fate, angling for fame and fortune in Roaring ‘20s Chicago.
Velma and Roxie become archrivals in the hoosegow, each competing to curry the favor of Matron “Mama” Morton (Christina Wells) and smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn (Jeff Brooks).
Velma Kelly (Logan Floyd, left) and Roxie Hart (Katie Frieden) ultimately join forces in “Chicago.”
The Sidney Sheldon-worthy plot is a fine showcase for Kander’s wickedly delightful score, which features deservedly iconic standards including “Mr. Cellophane” (delivered with real pathos by Brian Kalinowski as Roxie’s hapless husband Amos), the ever-popular “Cell Block Tango,” “Razzle Dazzle,” and “When You’re Good to Mama,” which on opening night suffered an audio cut-out; after a seven-minute hold, Wells got a do-over and belted it out with aplomb.
The moral of “Chicago”? Money can buy you freedom and fame; guilt and innocence are beside the point. It’s a lesson another accused murderess, the Hungarian immigrant Hunyak (Liz Lester), learns in the show’s singularly harrowing scene, when her sentence to hang for her crime puts an abrupt — if not unjust — end to her passionate claims of “Not Guilty” and her insistence that Uncle Sam never harms the innocent.
That said, the current crop of headline-hungry, merry murderesses acquit themselves fairly well. Frieden’s Roxie is appropriately bubbly and thirsty, a flapper willing to take on any role — convent schoolgirl, hapless victim, ventriloquist’s dummy, doting mother-to-be — to reach celebrity status. Floyd’s Velma is a hardened sophisticate by comparison, an ill-fated gig in Cicero having opened her eyes to the world’s cruel faithlessness. Both actors are fine if not unforgettable in the long pantheon of Velmas and Roxies.
Lawyer BIlly Flynn (Jeff Brooks) and the company of “Chicago.”
The ensemble numbers are the showstoppers here, never so much as in “Razzle Dazzle,” which turns a Chicago courtroom into a circus complete with lions, acrobats and clowns. Vocally it’s not impeccable — Billy Flynn’s smooth tenor needs to be velvet and Brooks’ voice is more velour, but the ensemble of glittery grifters drives the point home beautifully.
The choreography for “Chicago” has ever been defined by slick, seamless sensuality and joyful debauchery. Here, the seams sometimes show and the glee seems less than spontaneous. It is workmanlike delivery, solid but not exceptional.
In the end, in this production you can see still the brilliance of the original, but it’s lost some luster and sharpness in translation.

About Chicago on Broadway
Video & photos.
Set in the legendary city during the roaring “jazz hot” 20s, Chicago tells the story of two rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up in Cook County Jail. Nightclub star Velma’s serving time for killing her husband and sister after finding the two in bed together. Driven chorus girl Roxie’s been tossed in the joint for bumping off the lover she’s been cheating on her husband with. Not one to rest on her laurels, Velma enlists the help of prison matron Mama Morton and slickster lawyer Billy Flynn, who turn Velma’s incarceration into a murder-of-the-week media frenzy, thus preparing the world for a splashy showbiz comeback. But Roxie’s got some of her own tricks up her sleeve…
Know Before You Go
Devilish and delightful, Chicago is an indisputable Broadway landmark that utilizes minimal scenery and simple costumes (we’re talking some seriously basic black) to deliver one big musical bang after another. With one great showstopper after the next, John Kander and Fred Ebb’s now-classic score keeps the story moving at a gunshot pace. The scantily-clad dancers tip their bowler hats in tribute to original choreography Bob Fosse, whose moves are still as steamy and sexy today as they were when Chicago first appeared in 1975. For a show that stands chin-deep in dirty deeds, it feels like one helluva good time.
"Chicago still glitters hypnotically! It remains the best adult entertainment in town and still bubbles with the joy of performing!" The New York Times Ben Brantley
"Chicago is as crazy-fun as ever!" WCBS-TV Jess Cagle
"The show seems to have discovered the fountain of youth. As entertaining as ever. Brash, buoyant and utterly irresistible!" The Associated Press Michael Kuchwara
"Chicago is a triumph! It doesn't just give us the old razzle-dazzle; it glows." Time Magazine Richard Zoglin
"As much tribute as revival, the spirit of Fosse's genius never leaves the stage, and Chicago, under Walter Bobbie's sharp direction, will dazzle newcomers to the trademark Fosse dance style and provide a thrilling reminder to those who've seen it before just how smart, sexy and exciting this brand of choreography was, or rather, is." Variety Greg Evans

Till Lindemann is leaving Rammstein behind in 2024.
Starting in September, the bombastic frontman will embark on his first solo U.S. tour with special guests Twin Temple and Aesthetic Perfection in support of his 2023 solo album “Zunge.”
Midway through the fall run, the 61-year-old drops into New York’s The Rooftop at Pier 17 on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
While this will be Lindemann’s first solo stateside jaunt, it won’t be the first time he’s performed without Rammstein.
Most recently, he wrapped an international 2023-24 solo tour in Mexico, according to Set List FM . On that run, he regularly performed 19 songs — including two encores — per show.
While we can’t guarantee what he’ll bring to the stage on his forthcoming North American tour, we do know the best way to find out is live.
Can’t wait to see the lively Lindemann?
You’re in luck. Tickets can be snagged for all of his 2024 U.S. and Canada concerts and festival appearances as soon as today.
Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 26, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.
Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.
They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.
Till Lindemann tour schedule 2024
A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets can be found below.
Till Lindemann festival appearances
This September and October, Lindemann will lend his talents to a pair of heavy multi-day musical extravaganzas.
For a closer look, here are the dates, venues and fellow headliners at both festivals.
Till Lindemann set list
As noted above, Lindemann wrapped his 2023-24 in Mexico on Jan. 4.
Here’s what he performed that night, courtesy of Set List FM .
01.) “Zunge” 02.) “Schweiss” 03.) “Fat” 04.) “Altes Fleisch” 05.) “Allesfresser” 06.) “Golden Shower” 07.) “Tanzlehrerin” 08.) “Ich weiß es nicht” 09.) “Sport frei” 10.) “Blut” 11.) “Praise Abort” 12.) “Platz Eins” 13.) “Fish On” 14.) “Gummi” 15.) “Steh auf” Encore
16.) “Knebel” 17.) “Ich hasse Kinder” 18.) “Skills in Pills” Encore II
19.) “Entre dos tierras” (Héroes del Silencio cover)
Till Lindemann new music
On Nov. 3, 2023, Lindemann dropped his solo album “Zunge.”
Comprised of 11 tracks, the heavy rocker stretches his musical muscles and alternates between intimate quiet and chaotic, epic loud — the sound Rammstein is known for — with ease.
Highlights include the quirky “Sports Frei,” thumping “Altes Fleisch” and the warbly anthem “Du hast kein Herz.”
Personally, we were most taken with the Ennio Morricone-esque “Tanzlehrerin” with its guitar licks, yearning vocals and gifted yet pained backing singer giving her all behind Lindemann.
Don’t sleep on the shockingly fun album closer “Selbst verliebt,” either. It’s an unexpected pop delicacy.
Want to hear for yourself?
You can listen to “Zunge” in its entirety here .
On Christmas 2023, Lindemann followed up the album release with the whirly, tongue-trilling single “Entre dos tierras” en español.
It has our stamp of approval as well; the song is quite a bit of fun.
Till Lindemann special guests
At all shows, Lindemann will be joined by a pair of opening acts.
To make sure you’re acquainted with their sounds, you can find each band’s most-streamed song on Spotify below.
Twin Temple: “Lucifer, My Love”
Aesthetic Perfection: “Spit It Out”
Till Lindemann controversy
Lindemann was accused of sexual assault by a female fan last June over social media. She alleged he drugged her at a pre-show Rammstein VIP party in Lithuania and later approached her fox sex during intermission.
This led to a backlash against Rammstein’s “VIP Experience;” fans believed Lindemann was using the ticket tier to bed fans.
After looking into the case, German prosecutors dropped the case due to a lack of evidence and testimony.
“The rapid termination of investigative proceedings by the Berlin state prosecutor’s office shows that there is insufficient evidence that our client allegedly committed sexual offen(s)es,” Lindemann’s lawyers said.
Rammstein drummer claimed Lindemann “has distanced himself from us in recent years and created his own bubble” and “things seem to have happened that, although legally ok, I personally don’t think are ok.”
Huge metal acts on tour in 2024
If Lindemann’s brief jaunt isn’t coming to a venue near you, we have just the solution.
Here are five metal acts that might be headed to your city these next few months.

From Chuck Berry to Sheryl Crow, these Missourians call Rock and Roll Hall of Fame home
Modern American music wouldn't exist without Missouri, this strange and sound meeting place for creative travelers from north, south, east and west.
A quick glance at the names which line the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland bears this out. The Missourians inducted make up a fascinating story within a story about how this sound started, evolved and gets perfected.
For the purposes of this quick tour through the Rock Hall, we're focused only on artists born in Missouri. That means we'll skip (with gratitude) past the likes of:
- Tina and Ike Turner (1991 inductees), who have a deep history with St. Louis, but neither of whom were born there.
- Jazz lion Miles Davis (2006 inductee), who was born and grew up just across the border, on the Illinois side of St. Louis.
- Influential pianist/Chuck Berry musical partner Johnnie Johnson (2001 inductee in the "sidemen" category), who moved to St. Louis at age 28 and would become a fixture in that city till his death in 2005.
With those stipulations in mind, here's a partial list of Missourians residing in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Chuck Berry
Perhaps the most obvious inclusion on this list — among the most obvious in the Rock Hall itself — Berry was one of the fathers of the sound we've come to call rock 'n' roll; born in St. Louis, he became one of the city's true cultural ambassadors. Berry was inducted into the hall with its first class back in 1986 alongside the likes of Elvis Presley, James Brown, Sam Cooke and Buddy Holly; Keith Richards introduced the icon and influence.
Gene Clark of The Byrds
Although Clark only lasted with the Byrds a couple years, it was time enough to write or co-write indelible tracks such as "Eight Miles High" and "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better." The Tipton native was inducted, along with the rest of the band, in 1991 by Don Henley, the ceremony coming mere months before his death.
Sheryl Crow
A true daughter of our state, Crow is among the most recent Missourians to receive hall-of-fame status, inducted in 2023 by actress Laura Dern. The Kennett native and University of Missouri graduate re-envisioned the intersection of rock, folk and country and wrote some of the late 20th and early 21st century's best songs while doing so.
More: MU graduate Sheryl Crow part of 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class
John Edwards of The Spinners
Born in St. Louis, Edwards took a winding path that eventually led him to The Spinners; already more than 20 years into their soul-music run by the time he got there, Edwards handled vocals from 1977 to 2000, earning him a spot in the hall with other members in 2023, inducted by New Edition.
I know what you're thinking — Eminem is synonymous with Michigan, right? The legendary, battle-tested MC is known for rising up from that state, but Marshall Mathers was born in St. Joseph. A generational hip-hop talent, he was inducted in 2022 by his mentor Dr. Dre.
Michael McDonald
Hailing from the St. Louis area, McDonald isn't an original Doobie Brother (though he's not far off, having joined five years into the band's tenure). His husky voice and killer keyboards still prove fundamental to the structural integrity of a sound that propelled the Doobies into the Rock Hall in 2020, inducted by country star Luke Bryan.
James Pankow of Chicago
The horn player and St. Louis native has contributed many, many notes to Chicago's unique, genre-bending success as a founding member and arranger; the band was inducted in 2016 by Rob Thomas.
Herbert Reed of The Platters
Early pioneers on the R&B scene, The Platters created a wonderful mold with songs like "Only You," "The Great Pretender" and "My Prayer"; Kansas City native Reed helped make that possible at the microphone, performing with the group for decades. The Platters were inducted in 1990 by Phil Spector.
Big Joe Turner
Lauded by publications like AllMusic as one of our great "blues shouter(s)," the Kansas City-born Turner reached audiences with cuts like "Chains of Love" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" while creating from the front of a true musical revolution. Turner's induction came early, in the hall's second class, introduced by Doc Pomus in 1987.
