Carnival Cruise Line has revamped its Carnival Glory cruise ship with new features before it heads to its new home at Port Canaveral.

The 110,000-gross-ton ship is taking on three- and four-night Bahamas sailings from the port, joining three other Carnival ships. Built in 2003, the ship has a 2,980-guest passenger capacity based on double occupancy.

It recently came out of a 21-day dry dock at the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, receiving some enhancements found on other Carnival ships.

Changes include a new casino layout, including a nonsmoking area, and a Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge that pays deference to military veterans and active-duty service members, taking over the SkyBox Sports Bar. Also added were a Dreams Photography Studio and upgrades within the spa.

When it debuted more than 20 years ago, Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, was named its godmother. Its space-themed pedigree extends to enhancements added to the youth area Camp Ocean, which now has a large video wall for its Space Cruisers program. Its curriculum was developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Also updated is the video arcade and redubbed The Warehouse.

The refurb also removed the aft-pool Sky Dome, while the ship received routine hotel maintenance, cosmetic enhancements, ADA compliant updates in public areas and select staterooms including the addition of Ambulatory Accessible staterooms.

Stateroom balconies were also redone with new windows and doors and every stateroom had new LED lighting and bathroom nightlights added.

The ship sailed out of Barcelona on Thursday for a 14-night transatlantic voyage to Port Canaveral.

Its first sailing from Florida will be May 2. It joins Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Carnival’s Mardi Gras calling the Orlando-area port home.

Leaving is Carnival Liberty, which is moving to New Orleans.

Carnival Glory Sets Sail For New Home of Port Canaveral

The Carnival Glory returned to service today in Barcelona following a 21-day drydock.

The ship is setting sail on a 14-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic cruise to the ship’s new homeport of Port Canaveral, Fla. While guests embarked, Captain Luca Cherchi was joined onboard by Barcelona port officials for a plaque exchange that marked the ship’s special visit, according to a press release.

Over the last three weeks, the ship received several enhancements, including a new casino layout and the addition of a non-smoking casino area, refreshed interior designs and furnishings across all public areas and a newly added Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge, a popular venue that is expanding across the Carnival fleet and honors military veterans and active-duty service members.

A Dreams Photography Studio was also added and upgrades were made to the ship’s spa.

For younger cruisers, the dedicated onboard youth space, Camp Ocean, was redesigned and a large video wall was added to enhance the Space Cruisers program, which includes curriculum developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The ship’s Warehouse video arcade was refreshed as well. Guests will also notice updates to public areas across the ship.

On May 2, the Carnival Glory will join Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Mardi Gras, in Port Canaveral, where she will offer three- and four-day itineraries visiting The Bahamas, including Nassau, Freeport, Princess Cays and Bimini. Carnival Liberty is repositioning from Port Canaveral to New Orleans and will arrive there on May 6.

Once they’ve done that, Heald asks that those passengers leave their rooms so they can be fully and properly cleaned. Heald’s reminders come amid occasional tensions between passengers and crew over room readiness.

We are currently booked for a 5-day cruise on Carnival Valor next summer. I just got an email about upgrading our cabin from a balcony cabin on deck 8 (mid-ship) to deck 11 (fwd/front). I like that the Spa deck (11) has fewer cabins, but I'm not sure if we will feel the sway up there, or if it is worth being further away from the main amenities. The upgrade is only $26, which seems like a really good deal. Any advice on this? FYI this is only my second cruise so I still have a lot to learn. 🙂

The front of the ship will feel the most up and down motion, in particular on the higher decks.  Side to side will be the same anywhere on the ship, again the most intensive on the higher decks.

What is the actual upgrade?  Only the location, or is it a better/larger/? cabin?

Or is it simply that there are fewer cabins nearby?  (Will there be traffic for other reasons, like use of the spa, or...?)

And yes, a forward higher cabin is very likely to have more motion of the ocean than a lower mid-ship cabin.  If you tend to get seasick, this would probably not be a good idea, but you know how likely that is...

Or is it simply that there are fewer cabins nearby?  (Will there be traffic for other reasons, like use of the spa, or...?)   And yes, a forward higher cabin is very likely to have more motion of the ocean than a lower mid-ship cabin.  If you tend to get seasick, this would probably not be a good idea, but you know how likely that is...   ETA:  Oh, and Welcome to CruiseCritic! Joining in welcoming you to Cruise Critic. I would only take the move IF you plan to use the spa. Otherwise the convenience of mid-ship/mid-height trumps a little less traffic in the aisles.

I have not sailed Carnival but looked at your locations on cruisedeckplans.com and both locations are under public areas. I would only move to be between two decks of cabins!

Really?  Doesn't seem possible.   If a ship is rolling, how would a cabin 6 -8 decks up have the same motion as the lower deck cabin? 

All other things being equal, I would take the cabin nearest the elevators/stairwells (for egress).  

Make sure you do your research on location. My terminology is probably wrong so bear with me, but Carnival has a tendency to "upgrade" people from a good tier in a category to a bad tier(less sought after room) in the next category up. I.e.- from a tier 3 ocean view to a tier 1 balcony. Enabling them to sell a more popular room twice. I hope that makes sense. 😋

I love using the spa so I would take the upgrade for that price. I don’t get seasick though so I can’t say much on how you’d feel up there if you do. 

Carnival considers a higher deck an upgrade (after 30 cruises, in general I don't agree with them).

But in this case, where you are moving to a spa cabin, I agree it is a good deal if you will use the spa (since it does offer different amenities).  Also, deck 8 midship on Valor would be way too noisy for me, so I would take it for that reason alone. 

I took a look at the deck plans and can't tell for sure on Valor, but I have read here that sometimes on that deck, you won't have any type of cover on your balcony making it extremely hot.  But again, not sure about this ship in particular.

There aren't many spa cabins so it's possible the upgrade has offer is already gone (taken by someone else).  That has happened to us - the offer was gone by the time we logged in to accept it.

Thank you for all of the responses. The cabin upgrade was the exact same room set-up just on a higher deck. It was certainly appealing to move to a deck with much fewer rooms than on deck 8, but since we will be traveling with our kids (12 & 8 ) we decided to pass so we could be close to the main floors. Plus this is our youngest kiddo's first cruise so I have no idea if he will have motion sickness or not, and it wasn't worth finding that out on a higher deck lol. 

We booked a forward suite on deck 12 (on NCL Jade)  in 2018 as an upgrade. Not only was the pitching motion more pronounced, we could hardly use the forward deck because it was so windy. I think the OP made the right call to decline.

I'm a bit confused, I went to look at the deck plans for that ship and deck 12 has the spa up front, and no cabins on that deck?  Maybe deck 10?

We had a forward extended balcony on Mardi Gras, Deck 14, and we could stand outside just a couple feet back from the railing and feel almost no wind, even at "full speed" into the wind.  At the railing you felt it a bit more.  I don't know exactly what Carnival did in designing the front of the XL class, but they must have rented out a wind-tunnel from a Formula 1 team or something...

Good and valid point.   I personally am acutely aware of emergency exit pathways just about anywhere I go.

Carnival Glory sets sail from Barcelona to Port Canaveral following 21-day upgrade

On Thursday, April 18, Carnival Glory resumed operations from Barcelona (Spain) after undergoing a 21-day dry dock period. Embarking on a 14-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic voyage, the ship is bound for her new homeport at Port Canaveral (Orlando, Florida) .

During the extensive dry dock, Carnival Glory underwent various enhancements. These included a redesigned casino layout, refreshed decor and furnishings throughout public spaces, and the addition of the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge. This lounge, paying homage to military veterans and active-duty service members, is a popular feature expanding across the Carnival fleet.

Furthermore, a Dreams Photography Studio was introduced, and improvements were made to the ship's spa facilities. For younger passengers, the Camp Ocean youth space received a redesign, and enhancements were made to the Space Cruisers program, which includes educational content developed in collaboration with the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Additionally, the Warehouse video arcade underwent refurbishment, alongside updates to several other public areas onboard.

Upon her arrival at Port Canaveral on May 2, Carnival Glory will join Carnival Freedom , Carnival Vista , and Mardi Gras . She will offer itineraries ranging from 3 to 4 days, with stops in The Bahamas, including Nassau , Freeport , Princess Cays , and Bimini .

Meanwhile, Carnival Liberty is undergoing repositioning from Port Canaveral to New Orleans (Port NOLA) , scheduled to arrive on May 6.

Princess Cruises and Fincantieri Announce to Postpone Delivery of Star Princess

MONFALCONE, Italy, (April 19, 2024) – Princess Cruises and ship builder Fincantieri today announced the mutual decision to postpone the delivery of the next Sphere Class ship, Star Princess.

Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises.

The new inaugural sailings of Star Princess will sail roundtrip from Barcelona and include an 11-day Mediterranean voyage on October 4, 2025, and a 7-day Mediterranean voyage on October 15, 2025, that precede a 14-day transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale on October 22, 2025 for the ship’s first Caribbean season. These three new cruises will open for sale on April 30, 2024.

Guests who are booked on any of the impacted voyages will be given three options: book any Princess cruise worldwide, including aboard the new Star, sister ship Sun Princess, or any other Princess ship.

Guests who elect to rebook will receive future cruise- and onboard-credits depending on the cruise they select.  Guests will also have the option to cancel and receive a full refund of the cruise fare.

Princess will protect travel agent commissions on all bookings that have been paid in full.

Star Princess is the second in the new Sphere Class of ships for Princess. Sister ship Sun Princess, built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, debuted in February and is hailed as the next level Love Boat featuring the iconic and elegant structural lines Princess is known for, while delivering an evolution of the brand with new eye-catching architectural spectacles like The Dome, the cruise industry’s first geodesic feature on the top deck, and The Sphere, the suspended glass Sphere Piazza at the center of the cruise ship.
