Our Navajo guides teach you the history of the canyons and about Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), Hopi and Navajo peoples. We offer you more than just viewing our scenery. Every guide is a professional, certified by the National Park Service and the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department.

Canyon Hawk Tours has been in operation for seventeen years and is a Navajo Woman owned small business.

We have Navajo/Dine guides who can get you into the canyons, and in our 4×4 tours, you can decide which one you want to visit. Canyon Del Muerto is 27 miles long, and Canyon De Chelly is 33. Both have histories from the ancient Anasazi Pueblo, the contemporary Dine, 16th century Spanish expeditions, and the Civil War. This is the place where the Navajo first encountered the United States Army of 1862.

The canyon’s history also includes the geology of the massive sedimentary material which uplifted during the time of Pangaea. The canyon’s red wall of sandstone is called Red Supai, and formed through the process of lithification (ancient sedimentary material cemented together).

Great tour from thunderbird lodge

We booked a half-day tour from Thunderbird lodge. The tour was conducted from a very comfortable European built all terrain vehicle designed for this type of tour. The vehicle was solid and less bouncy than a regular passenger jeep and the views from the open top were incredible. Our guide, Harold, was very knowledge about the canyon, the historical events and the current Navajo culture.

HIGHLY recommend this tour! Being on the canyon floor is magical. Henry was our tour guide, and he gave us so much interesting background and info on the Navajo people, on the canyon, and on history. We enjoyed it thoroughly! We're so glad that we had this experience.

This was a great tour. A must do if you want to really experience the Canyon and to a look at the Navajo culture. Ask for Henry as your guide. His family history dates back centuries and he has a rare perspective on the culture as well as the history. Well worth every dollar. I suggest you opt for the closed in suburban tour as opposed to the open 12 person jeep. The closed tour allows you more tour info while Henry is driving. Enjoy...we did!

Canyon de Chelly Tours paired us with Reginald (Reggie) Etsitty who is more than a guide, he is a fantastic storyteller who brings the tour to life with Navajo history. Beyond just looking at breath taking canyons and formations Reggie wove the history of his people into the scenery creating a truly complete tapestry experience.

We loved our tour with Henry. The history he shared with us was in depth and fascinating. Very knowledgeable and personable and he shared some of his own family history as well. We rarely get guided tours, but this made the experience so much better. Highly recommended!

Excellent tour. Our guide Reggie was very personable and knowledgeable about the local history and geography, pointing out many interesting sites along the way. A Navajo guided tour provides a much deeper understanding of the local culture and is very worthwhile.

About Thunderbird Lodge

Located inside the park, near the mouth of Canyon De Chelly, the Thunderbird Lodge provides superb, comfortable lodging only minutes from the national monument. The Thunderbird Lodge is, in fact, the closest lodging option to the monument.

The Thunderbird Lodge provides the only lodging available within the park. The Thunderbird Lodge is a beautiful, historic, 73 room lodging facility reminiscent of yesteryear.

The Thunderbird Lodge is built on the site of an old stone-walled trading post built in 1896 which still stands today and adds to the flavor of this wonderfully unique lodging experience.

The Thunderbird Lodge is built in the style of the old red-adobe pueblos that the Anasazi Indians constructed and lived for centuries throughout the area. The grounds surrounding the lodge are beautifully manicured and maintained. You will enjoy the shade of cottonwood trees that surround the lodge and provide shelter from the sun.

The old trading post has been converted into a cafeteria-style restaurant which serves up Native American dishes as well as continental cuisine. The restaurant is beautifully adorned with examples of Navaho rugs and artwork which is available for purchase. In the center of the room is a vault-like room that used to serve as a jail cell for the trading post.

Also on site, Thunderbird Lodge’s gift shop and rug room offer some of the finest Native American jewelry in the area, for sale along with crafts and Navajo rugs, souvenirs, mementos, clothing and other items.

We ensure that every guide is a professional and certified by both the National Park Service and the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation. We pride ourselves in providing you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Leon was a Diné film maker and musician. He had a love for his cultural heritage and sharing it with the people he met. His passion encompassed so many of the arts such as music, film making, and writing. He was an advocate for the people, community, the arts, language, culture and the canyon. While he is gone, he is not forgotten. His legacy remains with us in the films and music he made.

Guests Love Us On TripAdvisor and Yelp!

Canyon de Chelly was the boyhood home of this cultured Navajo gentleman. His formidable knowledge of Canyon de Chelly is matched by his keen appreciation of Navajo history. Reggie focused on making our tour a great learning experience, he also knew the best locations for photos.

We lucked out and got Irene as our guide on a 4-hour private tour and we learned so much. She taught us about the history and Navajo beliefs all along the trip. She is a true treasure.

Spoiled my wife with a private tour, and it was terrific thanks to our guide, Harris Hardy. He was extremely knowledgeable and personable as well. Highly recommended. BTW, we stayed at the Thunderbird Lodge and were very happy. Tried Navajo food at the Best Western, which was also very good...not surprisingly since 90% of the patrons were Navajos.

We had our tour with Richard. We drove through the canyon and would stop every 5-10 minutes to get out of the car to get close up views of some of the paintings. Richard not only knew a ton about the canyon, but he also was extremely knowledgeable about the Navajo Nation in general. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to learn more about this monument!

We recently took a Canyon De Chelly Tour, with Richard T. as our guide! We truly enjoyed the canyon - but Richard's knowledge of not only the canyon, but also of the Navajo people, was what made the tour really special!

Thunderbird Lodge Canyon de Chelly Arizona

The Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise, which runs the facility, is an Enterprise of the Navajo Nation.

Navajo owned and operated, the Thunderbird Lodge is the only hotel in picturesque Canyon De Chelly. The staff are friendly Navajos who will make your stay truly comfortable and add to your experience of Navajoland. To get the most out of your visit, we invite you to “stay in Canyon De Chelly.”

Adjacent to the lodge is the Trading Post, which was built in 1896 and serves as the restaurant. Local foods are available in this historic atmosphere. The restaurant’s Navajo chefs blend traditional and non-Navajo cooking techniques to create a variety of Navajo and non-Navajo dishes. A cafeteria-style dinner is served seven days a week at this location.

The most popular way to see Canyon de Chelly is on one of our daily excursions. Our Navajo guides and vehicles are excellent, and both will offer you a journey that complements the scenery.

I would like warm syrup for my pancakes. Place was nice and quiet. Grounds we very nice. Prices in the gift shop were reasonable. Enjoyed trying Indian food especially the taco.

Response of staff to requests were quick. Your gift shop is exceptional, and could be emphasized.

The room was good sized, the location was excellent, the staff was great, and the cost was very fair.

Place was sparkling clean, staff super nice and friendly, cafeteria next door with excellent food. The entire atmosphere was amazing

Location is important. Old fashion style and cafeteria are bonuses.

We appreciated the quiet and relaxed vibe and close location to the canyon. The cool adobe structures seemed perfect for the location. Although it was old, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the shower was great and everything worked.

Clean, stylish room. We parked our car right in front of our room . Comfy bed, quiet and you’re right in the park. Highly recommended.

The room and facilities were very nice. The room was large, comfortable and clean. The staff was very helpful and friendly.

The location was inside the Canyon de Chelly park. You can't get any closer. It's an older lodge, but, for the price, it was very comfortable and had everything we needed.

Excellent location!

Due to the higher elevation at Canyon De Chelly, it can be very cold during the winter. We recommend dressing warmly and in layers from September through April. During the summer months, it can be very warm.

What happens if it rains?

Our tours operate rain or shine. Rainfall in Arizona is generally very short lived, and may offer the chance for you to see rainbows in or over the Canyon. We carry rain ponchos on the vehicles in case of inclement weather. If your tour is cancelled by the Park Service for safety reasons, your fee would be refunded. In the case of extreme weather, Thunderbird Lodge Tours reserves the right to modify, shorten or cancel any tour to prevent damage to trails or avoid unsafe conditions. A full refund would be made if this occurred.

Do you have A/C or heating in your vehicles?

We do not have A/C in the vehicles. During the colder months, our Pinzgauers have the ability to be enclosed and we have blankets available.

How much sun exposure will I get while on a tour?

We recommend you wear a hat, sunscreen and bring a bottle of water. Water is provided, but you can never be too prepared.

Where do we go to check-in and join our tour?

All our tours depart from the Thunderbird Lodge Trading Post. Go inside the Thunderbird Lodge and you will find the Tour Desk Check In.

Should we tip our guide, and if so, how much?

It is customary to tip the guide, especially when they provide you with exceptional service! Gratuity is based on individual preference but we suggest 15%, which is an industry standard.

Will there be other people on the tour?

Although our tours are intimate due to vehicle size, (maximum of 8 to 10 people) there will likely be other guests on the tour.

Is there anything special we need to bring or wear?

Dress in clothing that is comfortable for being outdoors, keeping in mind that since we are in the southwest it is recommended to wear sun protection including hats and sunscreen year-round. We ask that you wear closed toed shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain. We provide a bottle of water and a snack (lunch for the All-Day tour). Don’t forget a camera or binoculars!

Can I bring a backpack or tripod?

Yes, however there is no storage space in our vehicles. Anything you bring needs to be able to be comfortably held in your lap throughout the tour.
