Things to do in Boston

About boston.

Boston is a dynamic, exciting city with so much to see and do. From Boston harbor walks to live music venues, festivals, events and attractions, there’s plenty to enjoy. Whether you’re looking for Boston activities focused on art, want to enjoy the best of the city’s cuisine or visit the major attractions, FlixBus is ready to take you there.

Places of interest in Boston

Soak up all the history and culture by visiting the major Boston tourist attractions. You’ll see most of the major sights on the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile-long path that weaves its way through the city and passes 16 of the most important historical sites in the city - and indeed, in the United States. It goes from Boston Common, which dates back to 1634 making it the oldest park in the city, to the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, the city’s oldest neighborhood. Along the way, you’ll pass sites including the Massachusetts State House (where you’ll also find the Statue of John F. Kennedy), the Boston Latin School (the oldest school in the United States), and USS Constitution, the world’s oldest ship still afloat.

The trail also crosses paths with the Black Heritage Trail, which explores the history of the 19th-century Black community living in Beacon Hill. The trail includes the largest collection of historic sites relating to life within a free Black community prior to the Civil War, including the African Meeting House, the oldest standing African-American church in the country, and the Smith Court Residences, which were typical of the Black Bostonians living in the area at the time.

When you walk the Freedom Trail, you’ll also come across the Boston Irish Famine Memorial, a statue that has received very mixed reviews - take a look and see what you think for yourself!

Elsewhere in Boston, Harvard Yard and Harvard Square are both must-visit locations, especially beautiful in the fall. Get a glimpse of life at the iconic Ivy League school and explore the university grounds.

There’s no shortage of things to see in Boston - and one that should definitely be on your list is the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. This floating attraction offers a multi-sensory experience including live actors and interactive exhibits, ideal for kids and adults alike.

Boston’s culture and history

Boston is a city that is wonderful any time of year, depending on what you want to explore. Discover Boston events like the Boston Tea Party reenactment, the famous St. Patrick’s Day Boston Parade, Fourth of July celebrations along the Boston harbor, fall foliage in the Harvard Yard, or a raucous bar crawl for Oktoberfest Boston. If a bit of snow and cold doesn’t bother you, check out Boston in the winter for some magical snowy views, tree lighting, and Christmas markets.

There are also a great number of museums and galleries in the city. Some of the most popular include the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston or the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.

Other key cultural spots to see include the Appeal to the Great Spirit sculpture, the Statue of Horace Man, and the Statue of JFK. The Boston public gardens are a must-see, and include the adorable Make Way for Ducklings sculpture, from the famous children’s book, as well as the Swan Boats.

Theater is popular in Boston, with many of the city’s theaters clustered around the Washington Street Theater District, near the Boston Common. You might also be lucky enough to catch street performers, who can regularly be found around Quincy Market, or if you’re visiting in summer, be sure to see an open-air performance of the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company for free on the Boston Common.

As well as arts and culture, Boston is a major hotspot for sporting events. You can catch a baseball game at Fenway Park, see the Celtics at TD Garden Arena, visit the statue of hockey legend Bobby Orr, or tour The Sports Museum. If you’re in town on the third Monday in April, join the throngs lining the street to cheer on the runners at the Boston Marathon, one of the most prestigious running events in the world.

There’s a large Irish contingent in Boston, making the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade great fun, whilst the annual First Night festival, a major arts and culture festival that takes place on New Year’s Eve, was the first of its kind - and still one of the best, so if you’re ringing in the new year in Boston, be sure to catch some shows.

Areas surrounding Boston

There’s plenty to see and do in Boston to keep you busy for days, but the areas surrounding the city are also well deserving of exploration. New England is renowned for its beauty in the fall, so you’ll want to get out there and see the colors in all their glory. You’ll see gorgeous foliage in Hartford, Connecticut , roughly a 2-hour coach ride away.

Salem is also an easy day trip from Boston. Famous for its 1692 witch trials, you can explore the history relating to the trials - and besides, it’s a beautiful city to wander around and take in the scenery.

About Paris

Experience Boston in Hop On Hop Off Bus Tours

Named after a famous town in England, Boston has many nicknames like Beantown, The City on a Hill, The Athens of America, and The Cradle of Liberty. Since most of the first settlers in Boston actually came from the namesake city in England, that’s where it got its name from. Boston is home to the oldest public park in the US named Boston Common. The first Dunkin’ Donuts was also opened in Boston. Boston is home to several historical landmarks like museums, gardens, bars, and more.

Visit Boston Common, the Museum of Fine Arts, and Fenway Park with your Boston bus tours. Or check out the Bunker Hill Monument, the Paul Revere House, and the Tea Party Ships. For additional savings, you can even combine the tour with a Attraction Pass, which provides admission to the Aquarium, Skywalk Observatory, Harbor cruises, and more. Or, pair with a Go Boston Card, which includes access to a Fenway Park tour, Freedom Trail tour, or even a whale-watching trip! If you’re looking to get the most bang for your buck, it’s one of the best things to do in Boston!

6 Ways to Get Around Boston: A Guide to Efficient Transportation

If you are visiting and need to get around Boston, the public transportation system is the best way option.

How to Get Around Boston

A car rental may be tempting, but the only time it's worth driving is if you’re heading to a destination that is not easily accessible by public transportation. When I rented a car in Boston, I found that not only can driving be a nightmare, but parking is also nearly impossible and comes at a premium.

As with most larger cities, we recommend that you avoid being on the road during traffic hours as much as possible because believe it or not, it's much easier to drive and find parking in New York City than in Boston.

It's easy to get around Boston using the city's efficient public transportation system. However, transportation is not needed in every part of town. I was able to visit the most popular areas of Boston are small on foot.

The city is very walkable. When visiting the historic district and downtown zones, it's best to travel on foot (and don't forget the strollers for the little ones). However, just note that historic streets are cobbled and may be difficult to navigate with wheels.

Now get ready to take some great photos in Boston , here's a roundup of the best ways to get around town.

The Boston T

Boston has an incredibly good public transit system called the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority), or to locals, the "T” and it is the most popular way to get around Boston.

I found the maps easy to read and we used to to get to all the places on our itinerary. It is the best mode of transportation in Boston, the suburban towns, and smaller cities within Eastern Massachusetts.

The "T" has five color-coded branches that run above and below ground. You can download a map of the system to guide you in your travels. There is also a map at every station and on most of the individual cars and ticket kiosks, or use the link below.

Daily or weekly passes are also available. You just need to decide if you need a CharlieCard (a plastic reusable card) or a CharlieTicket (a paper ticket). You can also pay cash where accepted on buses and trolleys with fare boxes.

And there is good news! Unlike cities like London, you can get around in Boston with no extra fee for peak periods. All fares are the same no matter what time of day or day of the week that you travel.

You can also pay for more than one person if you have a CharlieCard (but it doesn't apply to CharlieTickets), so there is no need to purchase multiple cards.

Just tap your crew through the turnstile and keep it moving! Activation for the CharlieCard begins on first use.

Cost & Service:

  • One-way - $2.40, transfers included
  • Day pass - $12.75 for unlimited rides in 24 hours
  • Weekly pass - $22.50
  • Service - 5 AM to 12Am and later on weekends

Many cities are making an effort to be more eco-friendly and Boston is no exception. With the development of new street lanes and paths, biking has become a safer and more economical mode of transportation. It's also a healthy way to get around Boston.

The bike-sharing program is called BlueBikes and with the app, you can manage membership and rentals. The plans are created to benefit frequent riders so if you sign up and cancel the membership, you are still responsible for the remaining balance.

Some companies, like Urban AdvenTours, rent bikes on an hourly or daily plan. Renting a bike is a great way to see the city, get exercise, and create your own sightseeing agenda.

If the weather is great, it will be easy to get around Boston as a first-time visitor or take a ride along the harbor.

The Boston Trolley

We are huge fans of the HopOn-HopOff when our stay is short, and we want to see as much as possible in a short amount of time. We rode the tourist bus and saw quite a few famous sites in half a day which allowed us to explore other parts of the city during a long weekend.

Tickets can be obtained at the booths and select hotel concierges.

The Green line is the most traveled route and travels through the Historic Downtown, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, North End, and Seaport districts. The first HoHo stop begins at Faneuil Hall and tours start daily at 9:00 AM. The last tour leaves at 5:00 PM during peak season (4:00 PM, non-peak).

Buses are inexpensive to get around Boston, but it is also slower than the "T". However, the savings are hardly worth it unless you are traveling a short distance.

Cost: $1.70, transfer included

There are two harbor ferry routes that travel in the harbor and it's a great way to see the city from a different perspective and get around Boston harbors.

The Charlestown Inner Harbor Ferry runs from Boston to Charlestown, and the Hingham/Hull Commuter Ferry travels between Boston, Logan International Airport, Hingham, and Hull.

Prices are affordable and it would be a nice way to spend time on the harbor at a low price point if the trip didn't finish in a blink of an eye.

Cost: $4 - $10, one way

Commuter Trains

A commuter train is a great option to get around Boston our outside the city, for taking a day trip to Providence, Rhode Island, or accessing nearby suburbs. Prices vary depending on the start and end zone.

Compared to the Peter Pan bus, a trip to Providence will cost about $16.00 for a one-way fare and both methods are close in duration for traveling from city to city.

The commuter weekend ticket is valid on Saturdays and Sundays for unlimited travel between zones and only costs $10. That's a nice deal for a one-day getaway out of Boston.

Cost: $2.40 - $13.25 one way

Traveling Outside of Boston

How to get from boston logon airport to downtown boston.

Depending on the proximity of your destination, you'll take the Silver Line (1, 2, or 3) and transfer it to one or more of the color-coded "T" lines. Transfers are free. The cost of a one-way fare on the Silver line is the same as the color-coded lines. Line 3 will take you to Chelsea or to the Blue Line which takes you to historic downtown Boston. Lines 1 and 2 will transport you near to the Seaport District or Chinatown.

Cost: $2.40, one-way

If you are up for a one-day adventure elsewhere like a tour of the Newport Mansions, here are some ways to get to other common destinations around Boston.

We found this mode of transportation very simple to understand and follow when we were leaving Boston. Just follow the same steps in reverse.

To get from Boston to Cambridge

We took the "T" that connects to the Red line and exited at either Harvard station.  You can also exit at Central Station.

We wanted to visit outside of Boston to see the Harvard University Campus and take photos. It is a beautiful neighborhood, and the ride was about 30 minutes from the city center.

How to get from Boston to New York City

A bus from Boston to New York takes about five hours on a good day with a bit of traffic. We found tickets for $7 per person with Megabus. Another bus line is Peter Pan but the tickets tend to be slightly more expensive but under $60 one-way. A quick trip by train leaves from South Station with service via Amtrak Acela and the lowest price you will find is in the $30 range. Driving is about 4 hours, more so with traffic. The drive from Bost to New York City is an easy 220-mile stretch. The only other costs you will aside from gas are tolls. Flights are in the $100 range but consider the time spent in getting to the airport, snaking the TSA line, and potential flight delays.

Cost: Varies

How to Get from Boston to Rhode Island

We caught the Peter Pan bus from Boston South Station to Rhode Island Convention Center stop. The ride was less than an hour. The bus was quite comfortable and with air-conditioning. At the time, the ticket cost us about $30 per person round trip.

Since it was only 25% full, we had a lot of space to spread out and we loved that the bus was equipped with charging stations at every seat.

How to get from Boston to Martha’s Vineyard

While you can drive a car in Martha's Vineyard, the only way to transport the vehicle is via the Steamship Transport Authority. So, you'll need to get to one of two ports: Woods Hole in Falmouth, MA or Hyannis in Barnstable, MA (Cape Cod). Assuming you don't have a car, the easiest way is to leave from Boston Logan Airport and a Peter Pan bus to Woods Hole terminal. Then walk about 10 minutes to the port. The trip is 2 to 2.5 hours in duration. From Boston Logan, you can also take the Plymouth & Brockton bus to the port, the savings is $2 or $3 dollars.

Cost: $30 range

Final Thoughts on How to Get Around in Boston

Overall, Boston has a great public transportation that is very comprehensive. Like Chicago and New York, the system is expansive and makes it easy to explore beyond the familiar tourism spots.

We used it to visit South Seaport, the Isabella Gardner Museum, to get to the airport, and to take a 2-day side trip to Rhode Island. On my next visit to Boston, I would use public transportation to get around Boston in a heartbeat.

If you have a car, the New England area is a lovely drive especially in the fall when the jewel-colored foliage is on display. Happy trails!

‘She was ambushed’: Two people dead after murder-suicide at Brockton home, DA says

BROCKTON, Mass. — A woman arriving home from a trip to Jamaica was “ambushed” and shot dead by her husband, who then shot and killed himself at their Brockton home, the district attorney said Tuesday.

Sheron Trowers, 56, was fatally shot before 61-year-old Carlos Brown then turned the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz told reporters outside of the Ash Street home on Tuesday morning.

“It appears she was ambushed,” Cruz said, adding that the pair had a history of domestic violence. Trowers was just arriving home from a trip when she was killed. Two pieces of luggage could be seen at the end of the driveway on Tuesday, in an area cordoned off with yellow police tape.

At 12:27 a.m. Tuesday, police received reports of gunshots fired at 524 Ash St. The Colonial-style home is close to the intersection of Ash Street and Forest Avenue, on Brockton’s West Side. Police received two 911 calls, one from inside home for an unresponsive male and a second emergency call from a neighbor reporting gunshots, Cruz said.

When officers arrived, they found Trowers in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. They found Brown in the living room of the home with a gunshot wound to his head, Cruz said. Trowers was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The murder-suicide rocked the neighborhood of residential homes on the city’s West Side.

“I just saw all the lights, the blue lights, and I came out to look and there must have been 10 police cars and ambulances and a fire truck,” said Carol Wright. “It was quite something, really something right across the street and just a terrible thing, what can I say.”

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded to the scene.

Detectives from both the Brockton Police and the State Police from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office are investigating.

Cruz appealed to anyone experiencing domestic violence and who is in a “life-threatening relationship” to seek help. People may call SafeLink, the stateside domestic violence hotline, which is staffed 24/7, at 877-785-2020. Help is also available by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233.

DA identifies victim of murder-suicide in Brockton

“It’s a terrible situation,” Cruz said of the Brockton murder-suicide. “Unfortunately, especially with domestic violence cases, it’s not unusual for restraining orders to be brought and then time goes by and things cool down and restraining orders get dismissed, and people get back together.”

Regarding domestic violence, the district attorney said, “It’s everywhere, unfortunately.”

The murder-suicide on Tuesday occurred as police are seeking the brother of a man gunned down in Brockton on Easter Sunday as the suspected shooter. Two other men have been arrested in connection with the homicide.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Jeremiah Abreu, 20, who allegedly fatally shot his brother, 27-year-old Sedrick Abreu, early Sunday morning on Hoover Avenue, Cruz said earlier this week.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

By Weiyi Cai ,  Agnes Chang ,  Lauren Leatherby ,  Lazaro Gamio ,  Leanne Abraham and Scott Reinhard

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

A video shows the cargo ship striking the bridge and the resulting collapse of the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

Follow our live coverage .

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.

In Boston, parked cars regularly block buses. Other cities show it doesn’t have to be this way.

Three drivers sat in their cars with their hazards on in a bus stop outside the Oak Square YMCA recently. The white letters spelling “BUS” painted on the asphalt beneath them and the signs warning of a $100 fine were no deterrent. Across the street, another driver, also parked in a bus stop, got out of his SUV and walked into a Dunkin’ shop care-free.

All were betting — correctly — that they wouldn’t be ticketed.

In many cities, bus stops and bus lanes meant to make public transit faster and more reliable are kept clear of cars thanks to bus-mounted, license plate-reading cameras that allow for tickets to be sent to scofflaws by mail. But in Boston, as well as in Cambridge, two of the most densely populated municipalities served by the MBTA, state law prevents delivering parking tickets via the mail .

And so in Boston, drivers routinely park illegally, ignoring bright paint and signs denoting lanes just for buses. This doesn’t just slow down the bus, it creates unnecessary dangers for passengers, especially people with disabilities.

In Brighton, as the 57 bus approached the YMCA stop, the driver honked at the cars to no avail. Instead of pulling up to the curb, the bus doors opened in the middle lane about 10 feet away.

Casandra Xavier cautiously stepped into the street, navigating her way to the curb with her white cane. For Xavier, 34, who is blind and deaf, the cars are not only an inconvenience, they’re a safety risk. A few years ago, in a similar situation in Harvard Square, a bicyclist hit Xavier as she was trying to get to the curb, her cane caught in the bicycle’s spokes.

“I just really hope I don’t get hit by a car when I’m in those situations,” she said. “It’s putting people at risk really badly.”

Casandra Xavier often makes the journey to the Brighton YMCA from her home in the North End. She faces many challenges commuting, including drivers who park in T bus stops.

This picture may soon change.

A bill pending in the Legislature would allow transit buses and bus stops statewide to be equipped with cameras to take photos and video snippets of parked cars and send the footage to be reviewed by a human. If validated, a ticket would be mailed to drivers with a fine as steep as $125 for parking in a bus lane and $100 for parking in a bus stop.

The technology, versions of which are already used or coming soon in New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia, as well as locally in Somerville, has been shown to improve safety and bus service, currently the least reliable form of transportation provided by the T . Fines elsewhere vary. In New York, they start at $50 and increase to $250 with repeat violations.

Many Boston bus drivers, riders, and cities that have designated road space for buses say the camera technology is badly needed.

“This is about giving people who ride the bus an experience that is fast, that is reliable, that is safe, that is accessible, and that’s what this enforcement is for,” said Jascha Franklin-Hodge, Boston’s chief of streets, a role that oversees the city’s bus lanes.

In 2023, Boston’s Transportation Department issued about 8,500 $100 tickets to drivers in bus stops during the year, according to data provided by the city. That’s likely a tiny fraction of guilty drivers.

In one week alone, in a November 2022 study, the T found hundreds of vehicles parked or traveling in bus lanes and bus stops on a 1-mile stretch of Huntington Avenue along the 39 bus route. The T estimates there were likely 1,000 violations during that time when accounting for all trips, an agency spokesperson said.

MBTA driver Kevin McDonough, who often drives the 39 bus, said he encounters blocked bus lanes and bus stops on “every trip.” He’s witnessed “numerous” passengers almost get hit by people on scooters, mopeds, and bikes while trying to get to the curb.

“We have a specific lane that’s designed just for us and we can’t use it,” he said. “We’re out here working and we’re trying our best, but there’s only so much you can do. . . . Something definitely has to be done about it.”

Franklin-Hodge said that the Transportation Department is hiring more staff, but that even with a bigger team, they will not be able to enforce all the bus lanes and bus stops effectively without cameras.

Other cities and states are far ahead.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency began using bus-mounted cameras for enforcement in 2008 to ticket drivers parked in bus lanes, and officials there have said the program is responsible for improving bus travel times by up to 20 percent .

Since the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City began using bus-mounted cameras in 2019, officials there have called the technology a “game changer,” and credited it with improving bus speeds by 5 percent and decreasing the number of collisions by 20 percent on average. Notably, only 8 percent of ticketed drivers have received more than two violations, according to the MTA.

Cars parked in the no-parking T-bus loading zone on Washington Street in Brighton near the Oak Square YMCA.

The technology is also taking off on a smaller scale in Massachusetts.

Somerville began using stick-mounted cameras — two at a bus stop, and one at a crosswalk — last spring to photograph drivers who park for longer than three minutes. Somerville falls under a state law that allows the city to mail parking tickets to drivers , according to Suzanne Rinfret, the city’s director of traffic and parking.

In just 67 days after the waist-high sticks were installed, they counted 469 violations, or about seven per day , the Globe reported. Rinfret said she hopes to have the city’s contract with the camera stick vendor finalized and signs posted to be able to start sending tickets to drivers next month.

“We want to do this because of safety; in a perfect world we would never have a ticket in the city,” Rinfret said. “People were parking in the bus stop from three minutes to 30 minutes. People were abusing these locations.”

Cameras mounted on 10 school buses in Peabody last year found more than 850 vehicles illegally passing buses that were stopped to pick up or drop off children, over five weeks. No tickets were issued to drivers because that kind of camera-enforced moving violation isn’t allowed in Massachusetts.

The bill allowing camera enforcement on transit buses statewide is in the Senate Committee on Ways and Means. Transit advocates hope the final version will allow for cameras on school buses, too, and allow for ticketing drivers who drive in bus-only areas, not just park in them.

A spokesperson for the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, which has expressed concern with license-plate-reading technology in the past, said the group is open to improved traffic enforcement using new technologies and supports the data privacy and due process protections in the bill.

“It’s gone on for a long time and it’s got to stop,” said Tom Gilbert, a T rider who is visually impaired. “Getting [legislation] passed is the moral thing to do. Not passing it is prolonging the system being inaccessible.”

NEADS World Class Service Dogs celebrated Boston Duck Tours’ philanthropic initiative, ‘Quack-Quack, Give Back!” on Sunday with ambassadors and partners taking a private tour ride through the city.

The two organizations celebrated their 12-year partnership a week after Duck Tours’ 2024 season kicked off with the tour ride for service dogs and their handlers. For pooches too young for the tour, there was and a training course that included basic obedience, good manners and socialization, NEADS officials said.

Cathy Zemaitis, Chief Development and Programs Officer at NEADS lauded Boston Duck Tours for allocating proceeds made throughout the year to support NEADS. Zemaitis said a service dog in training was named Kilroy, in honor of the very first Duck Boat.

Harbor Sweets, based out of Salem, MA, also provided paw-shaped chocolates for those joining the tour, with a portion of proceeds from chocolates sold being donated to NEADS.

“Hosting NEADS Puppy Raisers and the Service Dogs in Training on our Duck Boats is one of our favorite events, and we are thrilled that they will join us for this fun, yet educational trip,” Boston Duck Tours CEO Cindy Brown said in a statement.
