British Airways Visa Signature credit card review: Combat high fuel surcharges and earn flexible Avios

Chris Nelson

Editors note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

British Airways Visa Signature Card overview

The British Airways Visa Signature® Card might not be your top choice for using one of your valuable 5/24 slots with Chase, but its low annual fee, strong earning potential and credits to cover fuel surcharges make it a compelling option for many British Airways loyalists. Card Rating*: ⭐⭐⭐

* Card Rating is based on the opinion of TPG's editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.

Some lucrative credit card options from foreign airlines are often overlooked, and the British Airways Visa Signature® Card — the only cobranded credit card that British Airways offers in the U.S. — is among them.

It has a $95 annual fee that isn't waived the first year and a recommended credit score of 670 or higher. It doesn't come with common airline benefits such as a free checked bag or priority boarding. Nevertheless, it's one of the more valuable airline cards on the market because of its big sign-up bonus and money-saving perks.

Let's examine whether the card deserves a spot in your wallet.

British Airways Visa pros and cons

British airways visa sign-up bonus.

The British Airways Visa is currently offering a sign-up bonus of 75,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

And for a limited time, you'll also earn 5 Avios on every dollar spent on gas, grocery and dining in combined purchases (either up to $10,000 or for the first 12 months from account opening, whichever comes first).

british airways travel card

TPG values Avios at 1.5 cents apiece, so earning 75,000 Avios would get $1,125 in value. Then, if you maximize the $10,000 cap in combined purchases, you'll earn another 50,000 Avios for a total of 125,000 Avios — worth a total of $1,875. That places it toward the top of our best limited-time welcome offers available.

One important note: Like other Chase-issued cards, the British Airways Visa Signature Card falls under Chase's 5/24 rule . If you've opened more than five credit cards in the past 24 months (from all banks, not just Chase), your application will likely be automatically rejected — even if you have a nearly perfect credit score.

British Airways Visa benefits

Although the British Airways Visa lacks many of the usual cobranded airline card perks, such as a free checked bag and priority boarding, the ones it does offer can still save British Airways flyers a significant amount on cash and award tickets.

  • Reward flight statement credit: Receive a statement credit three times a year of $100 for Economy (World Traveller) and Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus) seats — or $200 for Business (Club World) and first-class seats — when you book a reward flight to London traveling on British Airways and pay taxes, fees and charges with your British Airways Visa Signature Card.
  • Travel Together Ticket : Spend $30,000 on the card each calendar year and earn a Travel Together Ticket, which allows you to add a companion to a Reward Flight for no additional cost or save 50% on the Avios required if you're traveling solo. This is on any round-trip British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus redemption in any class.

british airways travel card

  • 10% flight discount: Get 10% off eligible British Airways flights when you book through the website provided in your welcome materials.
  • Visa Signature perks: Since this is a Visa Signature card, you'll get perks like lost/delayed baggage protection , purchase protection , secondary car rental insurance and access to the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection .
  • No foreign transaction fees : You won't be charged extra fees when you use your card abroad.

Again, these are different benefits than you'll find on many cobranded airline cards, but they can provide significant value to those who regularly book award flights using Avios.

Related: British Airways Executive Club: Guide to Avios, elite status and transfer partners

Earning Avios on the British Airways Visa

The British Airways Visa outdoes most other cobranded airline cards on the earnings side. With the British Airways card, you'll earn:

  • 3 Avios per dollar spent on purchases with Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, and LEVEL
  • 2 Avios per dollar spent on hotel bookings made directly with the hotel
  • 1 Avios per dollar spent on all other purchases

british airways travel card

Additionally, with the current sign-up promotion, you'll earn 5 Avios on gas, grocery and dining purchases (up to $10,000 or for the first 12 months from account opening, whichever comes first).

Outside of the bonus categories for the first year, these aren't particularly impressive earning rates. Still, the bonus categories, along with the value cardholders can get from the card's additional benefits, will make this a good card option for many British Airways frequent flyers.

Redeeming Avios on the British Airways Visa

The most obvious way to redeem the Avios you earn with the British Airways Visa is to book award tickets with British Airways. Thanks to British Airways' distance-based award chart, one of the biggest sweet spots in the program is for short-haul awards. The program charges a mere 11,000 miles for award flights that are 651 miles to 1,151 miles long and 20,500 miles for business.

british airways travel card

Still, British Airways imposes hefty taxes and surcharges on some of its own international award tickets, so the best uses for Avios are sometimes for partner awards. There are more than a dozen Oneworld alliance airlines on which you could redeem your points, such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Iberia. Plus, unlike some other airline programs, including American Airlines, British Airways doesn't charge any close-in booking fees on last-minute awards.

Transferring Avios on the British Airways Visa

You can transfer Avios on the British Airways Visa to other Avios-earning airlines like Aer Lingus and Iberia. This opens up the possibility of traveling to several OneWorld destinations that can be booked with these Avios.

british airways travel card

As the mileage currency of British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus, you can transfer Avios between the three airlines. Iberia tends to charge significantly lower taxes and surcharges than British Airways and periodically offers discounted award redemption rates , including business class to Europe, for just 34,000 miles one-way. Additionally, Iberia charges based on total miles flown instead of per segment, making it the winner for some connecting itineraries.

I have gotten good value from my Avios by using them to book through Iberia to fly from O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Madrid in business class for under 34,000 Avios each time.

Which cards compete with the British Airways Visa Card?

You may decide to go with a different card that earns Avios or a card that earns transferable points that you can transfer to Avios, like one of these:

  • If you are not over the 5/24 rule: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also comes with a $95 annual fee and earns 5 points per dollar spent on travel when booked through the Chase Travel℠ portal and 2 points per dollar on all other travel. It also earns bonus points on dining and select streaming services. For more information, read our full review of the Chase Sapphire Preferred .
  • If you are over the 5/24 rule. The American Express® Gold Card has a higher annual fee of $250 (see rates and fees ) but also offers higher earning rates and comes with many valuable perks that offset the annual fee, including up to $120 in annual dining credits (enrollment required). The Membership Rewards points earned by this card can be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to British Airways. For more information, read our full review of the Amex Gold .
  • If you want to earn Avios with a different card: The Iberia Visa Signature® Card has the same earning structure as the British Airways Visa. However, it has more Iberia-specific perks, like a 10% discount when booking here . For more information, read our full review of the Iberia Visa Signature .

Is the British Airways Visa worth it?

The British Airways Visa is well worth it if you want to earn valuable Avios. With the low annual fee, the benefits included could easily help you recoup the annual fee cost like the 10% flight discount and the up to $600 reward flight statement credit. However, you'll likely prefer a different card if you're over Chase 5/24 or don't travel on airlines that use Avios.

Bottom line

Diversifying your portfolio of loyalty currencies is critical in the world of travel rewards, and the British Airways Visa represents a fantastic way to do just that. With the current welcome offer, low annual fee and opportunity to get some of your taxes and fees credited back, this card is a great choice for British Airways loyalists.

If you’re not familiar with Avios points, you’re missing out on some amazing deals, like 25,000-point round-trip flights to Hawaii and 26,000-point round-trip flights to Europe.

One of the best ways to accumulate Avios points is with the  British Airways Visa Signature® Card .  Right now you can earn 4X Avios points on the first $30,000 in eligible purchases you make in the first year of account opening.  That’s up to 120,000 Avios points!

I frequently use Avios points to book American Airlines award flights.  But they’re also useful for booking flights to Europe on Iberia and Aer Lingus.

British Airways Visa Signature Card Benefits & Perks

Apply for the  British Airways Visa Signature® Card here

Read our full review of the British Airways Visa Signature® Card

The Chase British Airways card’s $95 annual fee isn’t waived the first year.  But with the card’s benefits and perks, it’s easy to book travel worth 10 or 20 times the cost of the annual fee.

1.  Earn 4X Everywhere on the First $30,000 for the First Year

Normally, the  Chase British Airways  card earns:

  • 3X British Airways Avios points  per $1 you spend on British Airways purchases
  • 1X British Airways Avios point  per $1 you spend on everything else

But with the current offer, you can earn 4X Avios points per $1 spent in the first year on up to $30,000.  If you max out this opportunity you’ll end up with a hefty 120,000 Avios points in your account.

That’s a lot of spending in a year, but it’s not a sign-up bonus.  So you won’t miss out on the full amount of points if you only happen to spend $29,999 in the first year.  Just think of it as an opportunity to earn bonus points on purchases that normally don’t have a bonus.

Earning 4X Avios points per $1 isn’t something to overlook.  Here are just a few great uses of Avios points:

  • Domestic coach flights (under 1,151 miles) on American Airlines for 7,500 points one-way
  • Off-peak one-way coach flights from 7 US cities to Ireland for 26,000 points with Aer Lingus
  • Off-peak one-way Business Class flights from 3 US cities to Spain with Iberia for 34,000 points
  • West Coast to Hawaii in coach for 25,000 points round-trip

Once you’ve earned the full 120,000 Avios points you’ll have lots of solid options for redeeming them because British Airways Avios points transfer to Aer Lingus and Iberia .

If you’re looking to get to Europe in comfort, off-peak Business Class award flights from New York, Boston or Chicago to Spain are only 34,000 points one-way when you book through Iberia.  So you’d almost have enough for 2 round-trip Business Class tickets to Europe!

british airways travel card

And getting to Hawaii from the West Coast is a steal at only 25,000 British Airways points round-trip.  You can use British Airways points to book flights to Hawaii on Alaska Airlines or American Airlines from 10 West Coast cities.  Again, if you earn the full bonus, you’d have more than enough for 4 round-trip flights to Hawaii!

2.  Travel Together Ticket

The Travel Together Ticket is a one-time use companion voucher you can earn each calendar year you make $30,000 in eligible purchases with your  Chase British Airways  card.  You are eligible to earn one Travel Together Ticket each year.

With the voucher, you can bring a companion on any British Airways flight to/from the US, in the same cabin class (including First Class), for just the cost of taxes and fees.  The biggest catch here is that British Airways (and flights to the UK in general) is the worst when it comes to taxes and fees.  On an Economy flight, you can easily end up paying $300 to $500 for your companion.

So, it’s typically better to think of your Travel Together Ticket as an easy way to book discounted First Class, Business Class or Premium Economy seats.  The taxes and fees will be high (easily $1,000+) but that’s still much less than buying a First Class seat outright.

british airways travel card

The voucher expires 24 months after it is issued.  You must begin your travel within 2 years of the voucher being issued, but you can complete your travel after the voucher expires.

3.  10% Off British Airways Flights

One of the British Airways perks that can easily make it worth paying the annual fee is the 10% discount you can get on round-trip British Airways operated flights.  The discount applies to the entire cost of the flight, including taxes and fees.

To qualify for the discount you must:

  • Book through the website provided in your card’s welcome materials
  • Pay with you British Airways card
  • Begin your travel before March 31, 2020
  • Use the promo code “ CHASEBA10 “

The discount is valid for any class of service and it applies on up to 8 people traveling on the same flight, but the cardholder must be traveling on the flight.

4.  No Foreign Transaction Fees

Many credit cards charge an additional fee when you use your card outside the US.  These fees can quickly add up when you’re on vacation!

Not only that, but foreign transaction fees are often charged any time you make a purchase in a foreign currency.  So if you’re buying something online from another country or booking travel in a different currency you can get hit with an extra fee.

But the  Chase British Airways  card doesn’t add foreign transaction fees, so it’s a good card to take with you overseas.

5.  Lost & Delayed Luggage Coverage

Lost or delayed luggage – it’s happened to me before and chances are it’s happened to you, too.  In these situations, I’d prefer not to rely on the airline to reimburse me for extra expenses I’ve incurred.

Thankfully, when you pay for travel with the card, the Chase British Airways card has you covered.

If your baggage is delayed for 6+ hours you can receive up to $100 per day (for 3 days) in reimbursements for essential purchases like clothing and toiletries.  And if you or your family members’ checked or carryon bags are lost or damaged by the airline, you’re covered for up to $3,000 per passenger.

6.  Purchase Protection & Extended Warranty Coverage

When you use your  Chase British Airways card  to make a purchase you’ll get other insurance coverages too, like purchase protection and extended warranty protection.

Eligible purchases made with the card are covered for up to $500 per claim ($50,000 per account) for the first 120 days.  And you’ll get eligible warranties of 3 years or less extended an extra year up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account.  Those are some nice perks that you’ll spend zero extra dollars on.

7.  Rental Car Insurance

When you decline the rental car agency’s collision insurance and charge the entire rental to your card, you’ll be covered for collision damage and theft for most rental cars.  But this coverage is secondary, so it’s not as good as what you’ll get with cards like the  Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card .

8.  Travel Accident Insurance

If you pay for at least part of your common carrier travel with your British Airways card  you’ll get extra travel coverage.  If you experience a qualifying travel accident, you can be covered while traveling for up to $500,000.  You can read about the specific terms and restrictions here .

Detailed review: British Airways Visa Signature® Card

As an airline credit card, the British Airways Visa Signature® Card underwhelms — despite its generous sign-up bonus.

In part, that's because its associated loyalty program levies large surcharges on certain award tickets, dramatically devaluing its rewards in some cases. While the card offers statement credits to help offset those famously high surcharges, they're not big enough to cover them completely. These factors make the card more complicated and less appealing than other airline cards.

The card might still be a good choice for two types of people: loyal British Airways customers who can meet the high spending thresholds required to unlock more benefits and those who are willing to put in some work to find strategic redemptions.

British Airways Visa Signature® Card : Basics

British Airways uses rewards points known as Avios, a currency it shares with several other airlines. ( Avios is both singular and plural.)

Card type: Airline .

Annual fee: $95

Sign-up bonus: Limited time offer! Earn 75,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. 5x Avios on up to $10k in gas, grocery stores, and dining purchases in your first year!

3 Avios per $1 spent on purchases with British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and LEVEL.

2 Avios per $1 spent on hotel accommodations when purchased directly with the hotel.

1 Avios per $1 spent on all other purchases.

Foreign transaction fees: None.

Travel Together Ticket: Make $30,000 in purchases on your card in a calendar year, and you'll earn a Travel Together Ticket, which you have two years to redeem. The Travel Together Ticket covers the fare of one other person (but not taxes, fees or carrier charges) for the same flight and cabin — even first class — when you book a reward flight on British Airways originating in and returning to the U.S.

Up to $600 in statement credit toward taxes, fees and charges on award flights: You'll get up to $200 per award booking toward taxes, fees and charges when redeeming Avios for a reward flight on British Airways, on up to three bookings a year and $600 in credits.

The value of Avios vary based on redemption, but generally, they're worth roughly 1 cent cent apiece, according to NerdWallet valuations.

The British Airways Visa Signature® Card doesn't advertise free checked bags, a common perk on airline credit cards. But often, you can check one bag for free when flying on British Airways, regardless of whether you're a cardholder. Visit the airline's website to review your baggage allowances.

Benefits and perks

Potentially huge sign-up bonus.

The undeniable highlight of the British Airways Visa Signature® Card is its large sign-up bonus. The offer is even more generous for cardholders who can reach certain spending thresholds. Chase phrases it like this: " Limited time offer! Earn 75,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. 5x Avios on up to $10k in gas, grocery stores, and dining purchases in your first year! "

Travel Together Ticket

With this card, you can earn one Travel Together Ticket each calendar year you spend more than $30,000 on your card. A Travel Together Ticket could be incredibly valuable — maybe even worth thousands — when redeemed for an otherwise costly ticket, such as a first-class international fare. You'll still have to pay taxes and other fees on it, though, and you'll have to redeem the ticket within two years. This feature might not seal the deal for someone who's already shelling out more than $30,000 in card purchases each year, but it's a nice perk.

No foreign transaction fees

Like any travel credit card worth its salt, this card doesn't charge foreign transaction fees for purchases made outside the U.S. That could add up to some solid savings for frequent travelers.

Surcharges: Bad news and good news

The airline tacks on big surcharges.

Here's something you really want to pay attention to if you're new to this airline's loyalty program: British Airways adds notoriously high carrier surcharges to certain award tickets, which can increase your costs by hundreds of dollars when redeeming Avios for travel. The exact cost of these charges varies by route and fare class. Say you booked a round-trip flight from San Francisco International Airport to London's Heathrow Airport on British Airways. For an economy ticket costing 65,000 Avios, you would also pay $300 in “taxes, fees and carrier charges,” as of March 2024.

That means when you're getting ready to book what you think is going to be a nearly free trip with Avios — surprise! — you might have to pay hundreds of dollars in fees, depending on the route. (In some cases, the charges could even make a reward flight more expensive than simply paying cash for the same ticket, which means your rewards would have negative value.) And these fees persist despite flyers' displeasure with them.

The card offers statement credits to partially offset surcharges

The British Airways Visa Signature® Card can help with those surcharges. Cardholders are eligible for up to $600 in statement credits each year to pay for flight taxes and fees when booking tickets on British Airways using Avios. The credit varies depending on what type of fare you book, and you can use this statement credit benefit up to three times per year.

Business or first class: $200 statement credit per use.

Economy or premium economy: $100 statement credit per use.

The credits make taxes and surcharges a little easier to accept, but they generally won't cover the entire bill for your award flights. Consider the earlier example of a 65,000 Avios trip with $300 in taxes, fees and carrier charges. Even with the $100 credit, you'd still have to pony up $200 for the trip.

And note: Credits apply only to transatlantic itineraries departing the U.S. on British Airways aircraft, and you must pay the surcharges with the British Airways Visa Signature® Card .

Drawbacks and considerations

Domestic flight options are limited.

For international travel, redemption options abound on this card: British Airways is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance, and you can redeem points with other Oneworld airlines, as well as with a few additional partner airlines. But for domestic trips, you’re limited to American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Looking for more options within the U.S.? The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card could be a stronger choice.

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , you can trade in points at a 1:1 value for Avios through the British Airways Executive Club, for the times you really want to redeem with British Airways. But you'll also have the option of transferring your points to several other hotels and airlines. Because transfer partners include members of all three major airline alliances — SkyTeam, Star Alliance and Oneworld — as well as U.S.-based airlines, like Southwest, JetBlue and United Airlines, this card offers an abundance of redemption opportunities. The card charges an annual fee of $95 .

Rewards can expire

Avios expire if you don't collect, spend, share or purchase any for 36 consecutive months. That could be a rude surprise later, especially for those who want to earn the sign-up bonus and run.

Plenty of cards offer rewards that don't expire. Consider the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , which gets you miles that remain active as long as your account is open. With these miles, which can be redeemed either through statement credits against travel purchases or through Capital One’s rewards program, you can book any seat you want on any airline. That flexibility means you might find it a lot easier to use often. This card also allows you to transfer rewards to British Airways Executive Club at a 1:1 value.

Earn bonus rewards in a variety of popular spending categories, including dining and travel. Points can be redeemed for 1.25 cents apiece for travel booked through Chase, or you can transfer them to more than a dozen airline and hotel programs, including British Airways.

How to decide if it's right for you

The British Airways Visa Signature® Card is an OK card, but the loyalty program associated with it can be a real drag. Unless you're a big spender who's fiercely loyal to British Airways or someone who delights in finding inventive workarounds, the airline's punishing carrier charges — even offset by statement credits for award flights — make this a lackluster offer.

Methodology

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. Improvements Added to British Airways Visa Card’s Travel Together Ticket

How To Use the Travel Together Ticket

The British Airways Visa Signature ® Card comes with a Travel Together Ticket when you spend $30,000 or more each calendar year. This Travel Together Ticket was primarily meant for a companion but has improved in recent years to allow for solo travel, and British Airways has recently made some additional improvements to this benefit.

There are several ways you can use the Travel Together Ticket , once earned:

  • If you’re traveling with a companion and you’re both redeeming Avios, only you as the primary person need to pay with Avios. The second person would pay no Avios, and only required taxes and fees (which, if you’re familiar with British Airways, can be very expensive).
  • If you’re a solo traveler , you can redeem the Travel Together Ticket fo r 50% off your Avios ticket .

British Airways aircraft at London Heathrow

2 new improvements have been added to the Travel Together Ticket program, which will benefit all cardholders:

  • Travel no longer needs to originate in the U.S. You can originate in any other country. This is a great benefit, as sometimes U.S. cardholders would want to start their journey elsewhere, so you’re no longer locked into using it from the U.S.
  • You can now use the Travel Together Ticket on partners Aer Lingus and Iberia. The only requirement is that you book your Avios ticket through the British Airways website , which shouldn’t be too hard to do considering the benefit comes from the British Airways Visa card .

Both of these new benefits are true improvements for cardholders, allowing you to use the voucher in more places and on more flights.

The Travel Together Ticket is only earned once you spend $30,000 or more in a calendar year. Be sure you spend this amount if you’re looking to take advantage of this perk.

These 2 enhancements make holding this credit card even more worthwhile. So long as you meet the annual spending requirement, you can look forward to earning a voucher that can save you considerably on your next travels.

Amex hikes fee on BA cards and makes changes to companion voucher scheme

American Express has raised the spending requirements for its popular British Airways credit card. Do the perks outweigh the costs?

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

American Express British Airways

American Express has made two major changes to its popular British Airways cards which allows shoppers to collect Avios points to help pay towards flights.

Amex has jacked up the fee for its British Airways credit cards plus raised the spending limit for companion vouchers. The changes are due to come into play in August this year for existing customers.

The companion voucher allows you to bag a second seat for a plus one on the same flight and cabin for no additional Avios points - all you have to pay is taxes and any other flight charges.

This is the first time the spending limit to earn a companion voucher has gone up since the program kicked off 20 years ago.

Amex is popular for its credit cards dishing out Avios points on flights and helping holidaymakers make the most of their money . But with the new changes in the pipeline for cardmembers, we look at which Amex cards are going up in price, how the new offers stack up and if they’re still worth it.

Which Amex cards are changing?

Amex has made changes to two cards:

  • British Airways American Express (BA Amex)

This card will remain free, but you will have to spend at least £15,000 to earn a companion voucher - up from £12,000 (see below for more on how you can earn a companion voucher now).

  • British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card

The fee for this card will go up from £250 to £300 per year - a £50 increase. The fee change came into effect on 10 April 2024 for new cardholders and will be applied to existing cardmembers from whenever their next fee billing date is. You will have to spent at least £15,000 to earn a companion voucher - up from £10,000.

Changes to the companion voucher

With these cards, you can rake in Avios points and if you hit a spending limit each year, then you earn a Companion Voucher which can be used as a 2-4-1 with British Airways.

Existing cardmembers get a companion voucher if they reach the minimum spending limit of £12,000 on the BA Amex Credit Card or £10,000 on the BA Amex Premium Plus Card.

The new changes will apply to this companion voucher from 1 November 2024, where the minimum spend required to qualify for a companion voucher will change from the following:

  • From £12,000 to £15,000 for BA Amex Credit Card holders
  • From £10,000 to £15,000 for BA Amex Premium Plus Card holders

Both cardmembers will have to reach the new spending target of £15,000 regardless of which card they own before their membership year ends. If cardholders have made purchases in the current year, it will count towards the new £15,000 target.

For example, if your BA Amex credit card renews on 1 March, you will need to spend either £12,000 by 31 October 2024, or £15,000 by 28 February 2024 to earn your companion voucher. Then when your card membership renews, you will have to spend £15,000 each year.

An American Express spokesperson said: “From time to time we make changes to the terms of the Cardmember accounts” to “deliver incredible rewards, value and customer service”.

“The Companion Voucher – which has seen numerous enhancements in the past 2 years - remains an industry-leading credit card benefit, and both Cards, with their ability to collect Avios through everyday spending, continue to provide great value for customers.”

British Airways Expands ‘£1 Fare’ Option to All Flights

Gordon Smith , Skift

April 16th, 2024 at 6:35 AM EDT

Loyalty programs are huge business for many airlines, with fierce competition for well-heeled frequent fliers. BA will be hoping these changes make its Avios scheme more attractive to existing and future customers.

Gordon Smith

British Airways has announced a big change to redemptions in its loyalty program. The airline is making every flight available to buy from just £1 ($1.25), plus Avios.

Until now, the lowest available ‘cash plus Avios’ price was dependent on multiple factors, meaning overall fare combinations varied considerably.

Operated by IAG Loyalty,  Avios is the reward currency  used by British Airways and other major airlines including Iberia, Qatar Airways, and Finnair. It also has partnerships with brands including American Express, Avis Budget Group, and Marriott.

From today, members of the Executive Club have the option to discount any British Airways flight to as little as £1, with the difference being paid in Avios. The incentive applies to seats throughout the aircraft from economy right up to first class.

Refining Frequent Flier Perks

In line with many of its competitors, such as  Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club , British Airways has long  offered a part payment service .

This allows frequent fliers or other high spenders to lower the cash price of their booking by using more points. In addition to journeys operated by BA, it can also be used on American Airlines flights between the U.K. and the United States, as well as some codeshare services.

Colm Lacy, British Airways’ Chief Commercial Officer, said the decision was made after listening to feedback from Executive Club members. “We know that most of our customers choose the lowest cash amount when it comes to making Reward Flight bookings, so we anticipate this to be a popular option for those using Avios part payment too. Ultimately, our goal is to keep adding more choice and flexibility for members.”

The change does not impact BA’s popular ‘Reward Flight’ scheme. These will continue to be priced at a fixed rate, with a limited number available for each service.

British Airways Under Scrutiny

The development comes as British Airways continues a  £7 billion ($8.9 billion)  transformation program. Over the next two years, the flag carrier aims to overhaul its operation and enhance the passenger experience. It follows allegations that  underinvestment and outsourcing  have left the airline on the back foot.

Last month, the airline launched the latest phase of a major new advertising campaign. Its unorthodox format sparked controversy as well as critical acclaim.

Airline loyalty programs  are nothing new , however, in recent years they have grown to become critical assets for many major airlines.

For example, American Airlines’ AAdvantage scheme and United Airlines’ MileagePlus program were recently valued at $24 billion and $22 billion, respectively. For its part, IAG Loyalty says there are more than 40 million Avios collectors worldwide.

British Airways loyalty members can now book all flights for less than $2 plus Avios

Executive Club loyalty members can now book any British Airways flight for just 1 pound ($1.24) plus Avios.

British Airways has expanded its Avios part-payment service as of Tuesday. Now, it's possible to get even larger cash discounts in exchange for paying part of a fare with Avios.

Before this change, the discount you would receive as part of an Avios part-payment fare depended on several factors, varying by route and the time you booked. Now, British Airways is giving all customers the option to reduce the cash fare of their booking to just 1 pound.

Related: A guide to British Airways' Reward Flight Saver redemptions

Similar prices have previously been available as part of Reward Flight Saver tickets , which are different from Avios part-payment fares. Avios Reward Flight Saver fares are featured in a limited number on each flight and allow you to pay more Avios and less cash for redemptions.

The new changes mean you can use your Avios to receive a cash discount on any seat booked.

"We've listened to our Members' feedback and we're really excited to be introducing this latest update for them," Colm Lacy, British Airways' chief commercial officer, said in a statement . "We know that most of our customers choose the lowest cash amount when it comes to making Reward Flight bookings, so we anticipate this to be a popular option for those using Avios part payment too."

Executive Club members will still collect Avios and tier points on any flights booked using cash and Avios; they will also be able to use the same system for flights operated by American Airlines between the U.K. and North America, and British Airways codeshares.

At a glance, these new updates to the Executive Club program may seem like a great deal. However, it's worth noting that making a part-cash, part-points payment often offers worse value than what you would get from a standard award redemption.

Reward fares are also much more flexible, with the ability to cancel or change your booking up to 24 hours before you're due to depart. We'll be crunching the numbers later this week to give you a full breakdown of where to find the best value for your points.

The changes follow an update last year when British Airways Holidays introduced Avios part-payment, with holiday package bookings starting from 1 pound plus Avios.

Bottom line

British Airways has expanded its Avios part-payment system so that you can now pay less than $2 plus Avios for any flight. On the one hand, this is a good move that will appeal to some Executive Club members; however, compared to standard reward fares, it will likely not provide great value as a redemption.

Qatar Airways To Launch 2 U.S. Credit Cards in May 2024, Waitlist Open

With a large North American presence and an even larger fan base, it was only a matter of time before Qatar Airways rolled out a credit card for U.S.-based applicants. While details are slim, you can now join the waitlist and receive an invitation to apply when Qatar's two Cardless credit cards go live.

Here's what we know about the new Qatar Airways credit cards.

Qatar Airways To Launch Credit Cards for U.S.-Based Applicants

Qatar Airways has a handful of co-branded credit cards offering Avios per Qatari Rial spent. Unfortunately, the cards are issued by Doha Bank and Qatar National Bank (QNB), meaning they're unavailable to applicants residing in the United States.

But U.S. applicants looking for a wallet companion earning Qatar Airways Avios directly, go ahead and circle May 3, 2024 in your calendar. Per an email sent to select Privilege Club members, Qatar Airways will launch two credit cards next month.

“[W]e're excited to share with you a preview of our upcoming Qatar Airways Privilege Club Credit Cards in the United States of America. Reserve your spot on the waitlist by May 3, 2024 to be among the first to explore their unique benefits and incredible rewards.”

There is no published name for the cards or a defined earning structure. All that's common knowledge is that one card is a Visa Signature; the other is a Visa Infinite .

Rendering of two Qatar Airways credit cards.

The size of the welcome bonus also remains unknown. But in the email, Qatar Airways teases that those who join the waitlist (open to anyone) to receive an application will receive an additional 10,000 bonus Avios after meeting the minimum spending requirement. Hopefully, this sizable incentive means a quality welcome bonus is on the horizon.

What's Cardless?

Given that Chase issues a trio of Avios credit cards — including the British Airways Visa Signature ® Card — it would have been fair to assume Chase would issue the Qatar cards, too. Surprisingly, Chase won't issue Qatar Airways' products; Cardless (through First Electronic Bank) will.

Over time, Cardless has launched interesting co-branded products for companies like LATAM Airlines, Simon, or the TAP Miles&Go American Express ® Credit Card . In the past, Cardless offered cards for sports teams like Manchester United, but those days have come and gone. However, in our opinion, it's refreshing to see Qatar Airways partner with something other than the status quo.

Final Thoughts

Qatar Airways credit cards for applicants residing in the United States are on the way. While we don't know how the cards will earn Avios or what perks they'll carry, we do know that joining the waitlist is the key to banking some bonus Avios when you apply and meet the welcome bonus requirements. To be eligible for these bonus Avios, register your interest by May 3, 2024.
