Bijapur is undeniably the icon of North Karnataka thanks to its collection of stunning royal monuments from the Adil Shahi dynasty. But what exactly is there to see in Bijapur? You’ll find everything you need to know to plan a trip to Bijapur in Karnataka in this blog post. This guide contains details on what to see in Bijapur and where to stay, where to eat, getting around in Bijapur and so much more! Our experience of visiting the best Bijapur tourist places

Bijapur, or Vijayapura as it is known now, is north  Karnataka ‘s most popular tourist spot! Bijapur tourist places are very interesting to learn about too! These monuments date back to the islamic era in the Indian subcontinent. In other words, that era led to many changes in culture, tradition, architecture and education.

Our experience of visiting the city was also similar. We were curious to know about the history of the city and how it was an important part of the Adil Shahi dynasty. We visited the major monuments at the best time of the day while beating crowds. However, we learnt from locals that there are very few visitors from beyond nearby cities and towns. In other words, Bijapur might just be ideal if you are looking for an offbeat Karnataka destination!

We also enjoyed the delicious food in town. Street food was safe to consume and that made our experience wholesome! Above all, we found it to be very cheap to travel in and explore. Therefore, we’ve put together this little easy-to-use guide to the best places to see in Bijapur, Karnataka. Check it out!

Ibrahim Roza

The Ibrahim Rouza tombs were built in 1627. Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his wife Taj Sultana were buried here. Therefore, the monument was built to the best of details with intricate Persian art on the walls. However, the carvings of the Quran verses on the walls are the most impressive feature even today. The monument also features sprawling gardens on one side. There is also a pond between the mausoleum and the adjacent mosque. It apparently featured a fountain back in the seventeenth century.

Tip: We recommend visiting Ibrahim Roza in the evening after 4 pm. The sunset glow makes the walls even more beautiful!

Make sure to visit this monument if you enjoy history and architecture. You can find ample space to sit and admire the mausoleum even though the place may be crowded at times! In addition, there are many view points across the fort-style walls and the colonnaded halls of the mausoleum and the mosque. The government has painstakingly maintained it and you can admire the intricate carvings and art even today.

The Gol Gumbaz is an icon of Bijapur and in fact, an icon for most of north Karnataka too! It remains one of the most popular monuments in Vijayapura and a highly visited tourist attraction. It is actually a mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah of the Adil Shahi dynasty!

Gol Gumbaz was built in 1659. However, you will be stunned at the technological and architectural advancement in its design! The dome of Gol Gumbaz is regarded as one of the largest domes in the world. This dome has no columns directly under it. As a result, the interiors look absolutely stunning. You can even climb to the top and walk around the inside of the dome. Thats where you will find the Whispering Gallery.

The Whispering Gallery is very fascinating. There are benches on opposite sides of the dome where visitors sit. Even the faintest whisper by one person is heard clearly by a person sitting on the opposite bench nearly 38 metres away! In addition, any sound made inside the dome echoes ten times before it fades out. Isn’t this remarkable?

Tip:  We recommend visiting Gol Gumbaz as early in the morning as possible. This is because the crowds swell enormously during the day.

Bara Khaman

Bara Kaman was supposed to be many times the size of the Gol Gumbaz. It was intended to be grander than any other domed mausoleum in its time in the sub continent. In fact, this is very evident when you visit the site!

The Bara Kaman is the unfinished mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah II. He specifically wanted to build a mausoleum of marvellous architectural quality. However, the construction was not completed due to unknown reasons! As a result, twelve arched columns were left in the complex around the mausoleum. Hence the name came to be Bara (twelve) Kaman (arch).

Tip:  There is no fee and you can visit anytime after 6 am. Some greedy guards may force you to pay a ‘guide’ fee.

Shivagiri Park

This temple is only a short twenty minute drive away from the city centre. However, it is well worth visiting if you are seeking a change from the islamic architecture and heritage monuments! It is popularly called as the Shivagiri Shiva Temple. The 85 foot tall Shiva statue is supposedly one of the biggest in Karnataka and also in the top three in all of India. It is more of a holy theme park than anything else. There are a few temples, a garden, some attractions for children and a museum hall. There are also many small shops selling yummy Bijapur style snacks and toys.

Tip:  Visit on your way out of the city as you drive to Gulbarga or Bangalore. There is a small entry ticket of INR 15 and camera permit is extra.

Other Bijapur tourist places

There are many more places to see in Bijapur.  Malik-E-Maidan is a citadel which features a historic cannon! The city is home to many small Royal buildings from the Adil Shahi dynasty’s era. They are Asar Mahal, Mehtar Mahal, Gagan Mahal and Sangeeth Nari Mahal. The Bijapur Burj is a small but interesting spot to visit too. Other attractions like Jod Gumbaz (twin mausoleums) and the Cenotaph of Afzal Khan are also popular! 

Best itinerary for Bijapur tourist places

You can easily explore the city in one day by starting early. We recommend this itinerary for seeing Bijapur tourist places:

• Check into a hotel and then visit Ibrahim Roza by 4:30 pm and enjoy the evening till sunset.
• Taste Bijapur style Gobi Manchurian and freshly squeezed Orange juice for a light dinner.
• Visit Gol Gumbaz early in the morning before 7 am to beat the crowds inside. This way you can enjoy the whispering gallery all to yourself!
• Have breakfast and then go to Bara Kaman by 10 am.
• Visit the smaller Mahals if you have the time. Alternatively, you can visit the Shivagiri Shiva Temple on your way out of Bijapur.

Stay, food, transport, weather and budget in Bijapur, Karnataka

Bijapur has many small hotels and budget lodges. Not all are available via online booking. You can find some of them here  though. We stayed at Hotel Pearl on the main road of the city. It was a five minute walk to Gol Gumbaz and close to many small restaurants and street food joints! We paid INR 800 for a very clean and nicely designed room. It had an in-house restaurant (multi cuisine) and parking space too.

Budget and costs: Food is reasonably priced in the city. Expect to pay INR 30 for a plate of Idlis, INR 40 for a dosa, INR 30 for fresh Orange juice. Expect to pay about INR 80 for north Indian dishes. However, there are many small Chaat stalls in and around the major tourist attractions. Street food is generally safe to consume. In addition, fresh coconut water costs about INR 30.

Must eat: Mandakki Puri and Girmit!

Auto-rickshaws and local buses are available in Bijapur. They are very affordable and easy to find. However, hire an auto for the day if you plan to visit all the monuments in one day. It may just make it easier. Vehicle parking is also available everywhere.

Weather is hot and dry like any other north Karnataka town. However, it gets cooler in the winter months. Therefore, we feel that its best to visit Bijapur between November and February. It is unbearably hot in summer months (March to August) and not a good time to visit.

Tip: Dress modestly to respect conservative local beliefs and traditions. Wear cotton clothing to beat the hot weather. Carry an additional layer for evening chills.

How to get to Bijapur, Karnataka

Bijapur is very well connected with most major cities in Karnataka  and most of South India. There are daily buses from Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune. Bijapur is also very close to Gulbarga, Bidar and Badami. These are the other important tourist cities in the region.

1. Ibrahim Rauza

Ibrahim Rauza, is said to be the monument which inspired the grand ‘Taj Mahal’ design! It is the mausoleum Sultan Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his beloved wife. It’s a coveted wonder of Persian Muslim architecture. What’s even more amazing about it is that it was designed on a single rock slab! One of the places to visit in Bijapur must be seen since Ibrahim Rauza with its wonderful minarets and gateways is immaculate. The entire monument boasts of different stone awnings, decorative windows, and arches.

2. Jami Masjid

The Jami Masjid was founded by Ali Adil Shah I after he vanquished the Vijayanagar Kings, and is the oldest and largest mosque in the whole of South India . The mosque is one of Bijapur’s most popular sightseeing sites and occupies an area of approximately 1,16,600 square metres. 4. Malik-e-Maidan

Malik-e- Maidan translates literally to the ‘Monarch of the Plains’. Its the world’s largest medieval mounted cannon! One of the esteemed sightseeing spots in Bijapur, the cannon weighs a whopping 55 tons and is 4 meters long. The outer diameter of the muzzle alone is above 1.5 meters. Shaped like the head of a lion, with an elephant mauled in his teeth, it is believed that, while the cannon was being fired, the gunner had to dip his head in a water tank to protect his ears from the massive “boom.”

Translating literally to ‘Sky Palace,’ the Gagan Mahal was designed in the 16th century by Ali Adil Shah I. It is characterized by the arches and the large central arch which serves as the entrance to the citadel. The Darbar (assembly hall) was located on the ground floor while the upper floors acted as the royal family residence. Plan a trip to Bijapur, don’t miss out on Gagan Mahal ‘s beauty!

Bijapur Fort is an important historically significant monument located in Bijapur. Established during the Adilshah dynasty reign, it is endearingly known as South India’s Agra. Also known as Vijapura Fort, a 50-foot moat protects the fort. Numerous structures inside the fort were built over time by rulers of different dynasties.

7. Upli Burj

The name Upli Burj is in nearly everyone’s list of top places to visit in Bijapur. This refers to a watchtower, designed by Hyder Khan in the 16th century. The structure stands at an impressive 24-meter height and you will find the tower’s top to be one of the city’s most popular viewpoints giving a wide panorama. And if you’re a photo enthusiast, you’ll need to surely visit the Upli Burj. Typically, it’s accessible through the winding circular escalators. 8. Sath Kabar

Saath Kabar translates literally into 60 graves and has a very tragic story behind it. Adil Shah II’s army chief had killed his 63 wives in cruel jealousy that they might remarry after he died in the battle with Shivaji.

Located inside the Bijapur Fort grounds, Mehtar Mahal dates back to 1620 and still stands to be the most luxurious structures inside the fort. The carvings on the minarets compose the Indo-Saracenic style as well as the Hindu architectural style.

Bijapur or Vijayapura is a beautiful city in Karnataka noted for its historical monuments and five rivers. One of the ancient cities of Bijapur was once ruled by the kings of the Adil Shahi who ruled the region for nearly 200 years. Not many know that Bijapur was one of the richest districts in Karnataka. When it comes to places to visit in Bijapur, the city is dotted with some incredible palaces, tombs and gateways that are a piece of art.

Ibrahim Rauza

Ibrahim Rauza is another must visit spot in Bijapur. An elegant Islamic monument, the Ibrahim Rauza is also popular as Agra of South India. This 1600s tomb has the remains of Ibrahim Adil Shah II of the dynasty.

Considered as one of most important tourist attractions in the city, Gol Gumbaz is basically the mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah. It is also among the most historic monuments in India as well as the largest dome ever built in the country. The tomb is a beautiful example of Deccan architecture.

Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid or Jumma Masjid of Bijapur was also built by the ruler Ali Adil Shah. It is one of the largest mosques in the city and a must visit attraction in Bijapur. The dome of the mosque is semicircular in shape and in 1636 Persian verses were inscribed on the minarets. Every Friday, the mosque sees a huge rush of devotees.

Bijapur Fort

Also known as the Agra of South India , this is one of the most prominent monuments in India. The Bijapur Fort (Vijapur kote) is an architectural marvel. The building has seen a number of changes over the years.

It is the incomplete mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah II. Bara Kaman is one of the noted heritage sites in Bijapur and Karnataka. The mausoleum features twelve arches but the structure was left incomplete.

If you’re keen on exploring an offbeat yet beautiful place in India, consider adding Bijapur to your travel plans.

My first visit to Bijapur in 2013 didn’t immediately capture my heart. A day of sightseeing around tourist-centric spots, coupled with a random guide narrating inaccurate histories, failed to charm me except for Gol gumbaz. The whispering gallery and the domes with petal-like designs on the terrace, said I am more interesting than you think.

Nine years later, while wandering in Iran, the wall of Tabatabaei House in Kashan triggered memories of Gol Gumbaz. The stucco works were unbelievably similar. Digging deeper, I found too many layers to Bijapur history connected to Persia and Turkey! So I went to Bijapur again! This time, I fell in love with it.

1. Where is Bijapur?

Bijapur is located in northern part of Karnataka, about 520+km from state capital Bangalore, and just 20km from Maharashtra-Karnataka border. So many confuse Bijapur to be in Maharashtra. You find Marathi and Hindi speaking people there – But people of Bijapur are as Kannadiga as the rest of Karnataka is.

Bijapur was called Vijayapura (the land of victory) during Chalukya king times much before Bahamians. In 2014 Bijapur was renamed as Vijayapura.

2. Bijapur History

Many stories surround Yusuf, the founder of Bijapur’s Adil Shah dynasty, born in Iran, and his arrival in South India. Ready for an exciting story connecting India to Iran ? It could make a great movie by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Vijayanagar Empire, known for Hampi, ruled Bijapur, then the Bahmani Empire took over. Next, Bijapur had its own rulers, the Adil Shahis – This is just a summary, but the tale has exciting twists.

Gripping story of Yusuf Adil Shah – Indo-Persian Relations

Yusuf, born in the 1450s, was one of the two sons of an Ottoman emperor in Turkey . At that time, Ottomans weren’t really safe from Romans. So, the Ottoman king wondered what if his two sons, including Yusuf, fought for the throne once they become adults. This, in return, would make it easy for Romans to hit them. Hence The king ordered to get his son Yusuf to get killed to avoid internal wars. But the queen didn’t want her son to die.

The distressed queen met a Persian trader Mahmud Gawan in a Turkish bazaar, giving her son and a lot of treasure to Gawan (Like a token for caretaker). The boy traveled to Iran , learned Persian and warrior skills. Years later, Mahmud Gawan arrived at a Maharashtra port, selling Yusuf to the Bahmani sultans of Bidar. Impressed by his bravery and talent, the Bahmani emperor who ruled Bijapur then appointed him as the Governor of Bijapur. As the Bahmani kings weakened in power, Yusuf seized the opportunity, turning his province into an independent kingdom – Bijapur Adil Shahi. What a move!

He didn’t just stop at getting Bijapur – He marched to Goa and snatched it away from Bahamanis in 1490! Just when he thought he got it all, Vijayanagara kings captured Goa, defeated Yusuf and gave it to the Portuguese in 1510.

So Bijapur Adi Shahi Sultans returned to their only place, Bijapur. They created epic Islamic architecture wonders in my home state – Karnataka . The story of Adil Shahis ended when Mughal emperor Aurangzeb from Delhi (1635km away from Bijapur) attacked them in 1687 for 15 long months! 

Egypt’s Queen Hatshepsut story of how a queen became Pharaoh was the spiciest historical story I had ever heard. But the real-life of Yusuf Adil Shah is even spicier.

3. What makes your trip to Bijapur worth it?

For those fascinated by history, relishing facts, and embracing stories amid architectural marvels, a trip to Bijapur is more than worth. The delectable Bijapur cuisine, friendly locals, and vibrant market atmosphere are the prefect reasons why you must travel to Bijapur.

I often hear negative comments and an average review about Bijapur. The town struggles with water scarcity. Some say, “It is a day trip from Badami; see Gol Gumbaz and go to Hampi. There is nothing much in the small town.” Let me explain to you why those words are wrong.

Is Bijapur not tidy?

Garbage and water scarcity are real issues; I won’t deny that. Many visit only famous places in Bijapur. Those or areas are kept clean. However, the side lanes need a significant makeover. Like in many Indian towns, things improved after Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2014. My friend Namratha from Bijapur mentions they got a running drinking water supply in 2018! Until then, they had to store water twice a week, enough for the whole week. Local communities continuously raise awareness among those unaware they can live in a better environment.

The sunrise behind Gol Gumbaz dome and a meal of Kadak Jowar roti in a local Khanavali is worth every money and second spent in this small town.

4. How to get to Bijapur

You can reach Bijapur by trains and buses. The Bijapur domestic airport is under construction. It was expected to be functional by 2023. BUt the dates have been getting postponed.

Travel to Bijapur by train

The easiest way to reach Bijapur from cities 500-600km away is by train. There are direct trains from Hyderabad, Solapur, Goa, Mumbai, Hampi, Bangalore, and Mysore . I highly recommend spending extra money on AC coach when you travel to Bijapur.

You can easily book your train and bus tickets to Bijapur on 12 Go Asia. Note: The train and bus website may display Vijayapura instead of Bijapur due to its recent renaming.

Getting to Bijapur by bus

If your travel time to Bijapur is under 6 hours, taking the bus is a better choice. Bijapur has two bus terminals, but they are poorly maintained, with litter scattered around. Before heading to the bus terminal, ensure you confirm the departure or arrival point for your bus. And Don’t use toilets in any of these bus stands – for heaven sake.

Bangalore to Bijapur

Traveling from Karnataka state’s capital city, Bangalore, to Bijapur can be done by both bus or train . Trains take longer but are comfortable. If you want a bit faster option, you can opt for sleeper coach buses with AC. The road condition is good without any curves. We took the onward journey by train and returned to Bangalore by bus. It was all easy-peasy.

5. How to get around in Bijapur

You can explore Bijapur by foot to an extent. It is an excellent way to explore beyond tourist spots.As it gets hot by noon, switch to autos (Bargain for the price). Some ruins are best explored by Taanga (the horse chariot). It’s shaded yet open, and the Taangawaala is usually a good storyteller, sharing Bijapur stories not found on the internet. To visit beautiful places in Bijapur outskirts, take an autorickshaws.

As usual, we did our typical thing on the first day – We walked for 14km on the first day. Because we did so, I feel we experienced Bijapur better even when it was hot noons. Many scooter riders on our way asked if we needed a lift. We happened to see some old monuments tucked away in the alleys of residential areas that don’t surface on the “Bijapur Tourist attraction list”.

6. What is the best time to travel to Bijapur

The best time to visit Bijapur is during India’s winter- October to January end. That is when the sun shows little mercy on you. The summer, February to June is burning hot, reaching upto almost 45*C. So don’t plan your trip to Bijapur in summer.

How many days to spend in Bijapur?

Allocate two days to explore Bijapur fully. Day trips often cover only the famous spots like Gol Gumbaz, Ibrahim Rauza, and Barah Kaman. But Bijapur got more than these three famous places to visit – And a day trip doesn’t let you spend time with locals at Shastri market.

7. Accommodations

Bijapur, known for its beautiful monuments and delicious food, has limited tourism amenities. Finding a place to stay is not a struggle, but you won’t encounter luxury hotels typical of booming tourist destinations. It is best you opt for hotel rooms priced between 2,000 and 3,500 rupees per night for better hygiene. Luxury hotels are scarce, so paying 3,500 Rs might get you the priciest accommodation in town!

Recommended places to stay in Bijapur.

The Fern Residency  - My parents stayed during their trip to Bijapur and had a very comfortable stay.

Kyriad hotel : This is where we stayed and was worth the money with decent breakfast. The room was clean, comfortable. Ask for r rooms that don’t face road to avoid noisy surroundings. The staff were of not great help when we asked if they knew any guides. They asked, “What is Bidar” when we told them we wanted to go Bidar. This is just one example of how border areas of Karnataka are neglected not only by the state government but also by its citizens.

8. Best things to do in Bijapur.

Here is a list of things to do and places to visit in Bijapur. We have divided this into Day 1 and 2.

Places to visit in Bijapur on Day 1

1. watch sunrise at gol gumbaz..

Visiting Gol Gumbaz is the main reasons why tourists travel to Bijapur – They are absolutely right. But if you don’ go in the morning – You are going to miss out something magical.

The city has a different vibe as it gears up for the morning. WIthout the vroming buses, the wide highway is mostly empty. Middle-aged people jog along the highway, many heading towards the world-famous Gol Gumbaz premises. Residents enjoy free entry for their morning jogging, and you’ll spot groups doing yoga and laughter clubs on the well-maintained lawn.

At the monument entrance, the museum building looks like the holder of Gol Gumbaz’s bulbous dome. Moving ahead, greeted by joggers with smiles, you spot a wide building with arches puncturing the wall. You will realise the museum has flat roof and hot nothing to do with the mighty Gumbaz. The archway reveals the 51m tall monument with excellent stucco work and a wooden-panelled doorway with turrets at the end. If this moment excites you, wait— the best part is yet to come.

At the Terrace

The 40m turrets on either side are difficult to climb using the spiral staircase. You take multiple long breaths with high rises, but you must make it to the terrace to witness the magic of smaller domes and a huge one lined with Petals at the bottom. With hardly any tourists at 6 am, the entire complex may be yours. To say a Hi, the sun who exactly looks like bright orange fruit rises behind the couple domes – This is the moment to be enthralled and rejoiced looking at the town below and surrounded by tiny domes where Green parrots have made home. Trust me; three hours on this terrace flew like 3 minutes for us.

2. Listen to tourists at Whispering gallery at Gol Gumbaz.

Due to the simple principle of sound reflection and smooth surface of the 44m wide dome, the echo in the mezzanine floor that can be accessed only from the terrace is a phenomenon to witness in Gol Gumbaz.

Even a small whisper or finger snap sound can be heard across 44m. Trying it in your own voice is good. But by 10 am, when the tourist crowd arrives, their main aim is to make weird and funny sounds to see how it gets echoed. Evil laughter, someone saying “I love you Chinnu”, singing a sad song or even shouting names – Tourists have utmost fun here. You sit either on the terrace outside the whispering gallery or inside- Listening to crazy echo sounds is the fun.

3. Wander in old residential areas.

Established in the 10th-11th century, Bijapur has witnessed constant changes under various rulers. Despite modern urbanization, some old houses still stand strong. On Shivaji Road in the Uppal Buj area and near the poorly maintained Taj Bawdi, you’ll find many of these 200-year-old houses. Some are active, some are locked. Most houses feature stone walls and cast iron railings, with smaller windows showcasing triangular shades and cornice designs typical of old affluent homes.

In the middle of these ancient houses, you can spot ACP cladded ugly commercial buildings – Locals are selling their heritage homes for better life!

4. Relish on Persian influenced cuisines.

One of the points in my Bijapur travel plan was to meet or know about the descendants of Adil Shah’s family in Bijapur. I asked many locals and the reply was “we don’t know. The Jama Masjid caretaker, humorously responded, “What do you want with them? We don’t know anyone related to Adil Shah.”

Though I haven’t found the living lineage, a local friend recommended Qaswa Hill restaurant. They claim the owner’s lineage links to Adil Shah kings’ tax collectors, offering unique cuisines from that era, reminiscent of Ashrith’s experiences in Iran.

Ashrith says, Qaswa hills’ chicken based”Persian Delight” with rice tasted like the Persian dish Koofteh. Their veg food was decent; Their drinks, Pista Falooda and Shahi Gulab, was super refreshing. So having lunch at Qaswa restaurant, is really one of the unique things to do in Bijapur.

5. Visit buzzing Shastri Market.

Bijapur’s charm lies in its absence of mass tourism. Shastri Market, buzzing with energy, aroma, and chillies, is really a place where locals go shopping. Despite our familiarity with bustling Indian markets, Shastri Market had a distinctive charm. Unlike regular shopping complexes in India, this market has something different.

Almost 100m long Shastri market sells pure Bijapur things – Chilli, Wax like dhoop, fryums, Ilkal sarees and most importantly – Tastiest Kadak roti (dried Jowar roti) along with Shenga Chutney. Castor oils to Chia seeds, Pulses to highly quality jaggery – the aroma in this market is heavenly. The way women bargain with saree sellers here is an art even an Indian like me who is born and brought up here must learn.

I have never seen such a variety of pulses at one shot anywhere else in my home state. That too in small “Not wholesale” shops. Most parts of the market we wandered were clean except one corner where buyers and sellers treated it as a dumping and spitting yard in the middle of a walkway.

6. Watch the sunset behind tall Shiva statue and Shivagiri.

The architecture, history, market vibe are over for the day and now you move on to some quietness.

Honestly, I’m not into modern buildings, especially religious ones. But this 25m Shiva statue, built-in 2006, is the only contemporary religious spot I liked. Shiva sits in a meditating pose in an open field with gardens facing East, offering an uninterrupted view of the sunset that looks mystical at twilight. After a 10+ km walk during the day, this place, where locals hang out with families in the evening, is the best place to unwind in Bijapur.

Take an autorickshaw to Shivgiri and back. Before heading to your room, grab dinner at Qaswa.

Places to visit in Bijapur on Day 2

7. visit jama masjid..

Jama Masjid means “Congregational mosques”. There are plenty of such mosques in India. Bijapur Jama masjid is one of them. It is neither large nor aesthetically wonderful from the outside. Because Adi Shah kings never completed it. When Mughal king Aurangzeb captured the town, he added one more entrance from the east.

So approach to this via residential areas is interesting. The inside of the mosque is more enticing , with arches interesting to hold the dome on top – which exactly reminded us of Iran.

8 Visit unfinished Barah Kaman

The next famous place in Bijapur to visit is a series of arches on a high stone plinth- Barah Kaman.

Silently crumbling yet graceful arches conceal dark stories. This unfinished monument was intended to be the mausoleum for Ali Adil Shah, the king’s son who constructed Gol Gumbaz. However, the father, jealous of his son’s creation that beats the magnificent Gol Gumbaz he built for himself, ended up killing his own son. This stopped the mausoleum construction!

All you can see is a dozen arches inclining inwards on a high plinth surrounded by a garden decently maintained by an archaeological survey of India. What is more exciting for Kannadigas is the famous song “Pyaar ge Aag Bittaithe” was filmed here.

9. Eat at Khanavali.

After the visit two most famous places of Bijapur, you would be craving for some local delicacies. And I show you where you can find the best local food.North Karnataka food differs from the rest of India and tastes heavenly, especially with Jowar roti. The meals are super healthy, featuring lots of pulse curries, veggies, and curd.

The Lingayat community excels in making Jowar roti meals and operates small eateries called Khanavalis. Yediyur Siddhalingeshwara Bhojanalaya near Barah Kaman is the most renowned place in town. We had two meals here and it was delicious. So have your local Bijapur food at Yediyur Siddhalingeshwara Bhojanalaya .

10. Take a Taanga ride and enjoy the vibe.

Taanga rides AKA horse-drawn carriage aren’t fun everywhere It can’t go in a narrow lane; the clip-clop sound is loud that you can’t talk to the person sitting next to you. – I didn’t like it a bit in Bruges and I loved it in Vienna.

So Taanga ride is really one of the fascinating things to do in Bijapur. It lets you see Bijapur streets away from monuments. The coachmen living here since birth know a lot about their town. So talking to them is fun. Stops at smaller monuments and open markets to buy food for horses, coachmen’s views on the city is super fun. So make sure to go on a Tanga ride when you travel in Bijapur.

11. Wonder what is Jod Gumad.

Jod means couple- So this is a place that got two tombs in a Dargah with one dome on each. The shape of the domes are similar to that of Ibrahim Rauza. It sounds simple, but this place has a different seeing. And is rarely visited by tourists.

The Dargah entrance has shops selling Chadar, flowers, and incense for the saint’s tomb. Inside, you find people of multiple religions! While a holy place for Muslims, we saw Hindus meeting Muslim friends. Overheard conversations ranged from crop prices to a woman on the phone yelling about money. The Dargah exterior feels religious, but the premises act more like a Public Plaza than a Mausoleum.

A part of the complex looked like a temporary shelter, and some has made this their forever home. This is the most bizarre mausoleum I have ever seen where people pray and live next to it.

12. Picnic with local residents at Gagan Mahal

At Gagan Mahal, you’ll find just one wall with some arches and stucco works. A giant trees covers it partially with it’s crown spread and hanging routes. This looks mystical! It’s hard to believe this was once a royal residence of Ali Adi Shah and a Durbar hall.

The vast lawn in front is a picnic spot for people of all age groups. Kids run around with bubble guns, while adults buy chats from one of the many street food carts beside the Gagan Mahal wall. Munching on delicious packed snacks, they sometimes forget to use the dust bin. A whistle from the watch guard reminds them to keep the place cleaner. The man, with a mouthful of Gutkha, quietly picks up all plates used by his family and puts them in the bin without shouting back at the guard

Watching all this against the backdrop of a 1560s ruin feels like Bijapur can take you on a time travel journey, yet keeping you in the present!

13. Spend the evenings at Ibrahim Rauza.

Apart from Gol Gumbaz, another popular place tourists visit in Bijapur is Ibrahim Rauza.

It’s an architectural wonder of 1625 AD – A combination of the mausoleum (king’s tomb) and a small mosque on an elevated terrace in a vast open area. Stone benches on the sides are perfect for people-watching.

You can’t help but admire, the highly detailed stucco works and brackets supporting the roof overhangs. The ribbed vaults and domes inside the roof evoke memories of Iran. Expect crowds due to its fame, but being here at sunset elevates the experience, even with the crowd. Good lighting, great architecture, and the dawn light attract local models for photoshoots. Watching them is a fun way to end your Bijapur Trip.

The city of Bijapur was known as Vijaypura or the city of victory in ancient times and was founded by the Chalukyas between the 10th and the 11th centuries. The name underwent the current state during the reign of the Adil Shah dynasty in the 14th century during which the city’s most important monuments were built. The city is a cultural hub due to the influences from the various dynasties that has ruled this region. Bijapur ranks among one of the popular places to visit in Karnataka . 1. Gol Gumbaz

Gol Bumbaz is the mausoleum of the Sultan of Bijapur, Muhammad Adil Shah in 1656. The dome is the second largest dome in the world and is considered to be one of the most impressive structures in the world. The dome is 51 meters high and covers 18000 square feet of land. The ‘Whispering Gallery’ is another famous attraction in the Gol Gumbaz where even the softest sound can be heard.

2. Ibrahim Rauza

Said to be the building that inspired the design of the ‘ Taj Mahal ’, Ibrahim Rauza is the mausoleum of Sultan Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his Queen. The structure is a marvel of the Persian Muslim architecture and is built on a single slab of rock. Ibrahim Rauza is exemplary of its marvelous minarets and gateways. The whole building has been adorned with various stone awnings and decorative windows and arches.

3. Malik-e-Maidan

Malik-e-Maidan literally means the Monarch of the Plains and is the largest mounted medieval cannon in the world. The cannon weighs a tremendous 55 tons and are 4 meters in length. The muzzle’s outer diameter is above 1.5 meters and is shaped like a lion’s head with an elephant being mauled in its teeth. It is said that the gunner had to take a dip in a water tank to protect his ears from the massive sound when the cannon was fired.

4. Jami Masjid

The oldest and the largest mosque in southern India, the Jami Masjid was built by Ali Adil Shah I after he defeated the Vijaynagar Kings. The mosque covers an area of 116,300 square feet and is one of the most brilliantly designed mosques in India. The interiors of the mosque are amazingly crafted and are decorated with various paintings and murals.

5. Upli Buruj

The name Upli Buruj refers to a watch tower that was built in the 16th century by Hyder Khan. The tower stands at an impressive height of 24 meters and the top of the tower is a famous view point that gives a wide panorama of the city. The top is accessed though winding circular stairs and two massive cannons are placed on the top of the tower.

6. Gagan Mahal

Gagan Mahal literally means the sky palace and was built by Ali Adil Shah I in the 16th century. The structure is characterized with arches and a central large arch which acts as an entrance to the citadel. The ground floor had a Darbar or an assembly hall and the upper floors served as the residence to the royal family.

Bijapur saw its splendor during the reign of the Adil Shah dynasty that defeated the waning Vijaynagar Kings to seize control of the region. Ibrahim Adil Shah II was considered to be the most illustrious of the Adil Shah sultans and due to his religious tolerance like the Mughal Akbar, is responsible for most of the grandeur of the city. The above-mentioned places are the best of the several monuments located in the historical city of Bijapur and should not be missed.

By Meenakshi Gupta One of the most visited historical towns of the state with 50 mosques, more than 20 tombs, and some palaces and ruins is Vijayapura. Formerly known as Bijapur, Vijayapura is located north of Karnataka closer to Maharashtra towns Sangli and Solapur. Undoubtedly there are many interesting places to see in Vijayapura.

The city is famous for its architectural marvels of historical importance built during the Adil Shahi dynasty period. Vijayapura is one of the top 10 cities visited in Karnataka, especially for its monuments. Vijayapura is also home to India’s largest dome, Gol Gombaz along with many other monuments and ruins of the forts.

The heritage city Bijapur, established in the 10th – 11th centuries by the Kalyani Chalukyas was renamed Vijayapura in the year 2014 as it has been always known as the City of Victory, Vijayapura. Bijapur first came under the Muslim influence of, the Sultan of Delhi, Allaudin Khilji by the end of the 13th century and then under the Bahamani kings of Bidar in 1347. The city was under Mughal rule up to 1723. It was during the Adil Shah King’s tenure, Vijayapura became a culturally rich empire and attracted musicians, artists, and scholars from various fields and far-off locations like Persia and Arabia. The popular Urdu poetry symposium or Mushaira is believed to have originated from Bijapur and travelled to North India and other parts of the country.

Jamia Masjid: The central wall of this holy Indo –Islamic architectural mosque is covered with lines from the Holy Quran etched in exquisite calligraphy. The exterior, especially the onion-shaped crowning dome, the aisles & corridors, the elegant arches, halls, and much more are one of the best examples of Indo- Islamic architecture from Adil Shahi.

2. Shivagiri Temple:   Home to the second largest Shiva statue in the country standing tall with a height of 85 feet, Shivagiri temple is evolving as the most sought pilgrimage. The statue weighs around 1500 tons and also has a small idol of Shivalinga installed beneath the big statue. 3. Muddebihal: Home to Shiva and Hanuman temples and shrines of Dattatreya, Panduranga, Durgadevi, Mallayya, Marulasidheshwara, and Banashankari. Muddebihal, Muddebihal also has ruins of an old fort. 4. Ingaleshwar: A cluster of eight ancient temples, of which two are cave temples namely Siddeshvara and Akka Nagamma, Ingaleshwar is a must to visit the temple in Vijayapura. Another temple with 36 beautifully carved Kalyana Chalukya era pillars, is Someshwara Temple, which is believed to be the largest in the town. 5. Sahasraphani Parshwanatha Basadi:   Located on the outskirts of Vijayapura, this Jain temple has a unique idol of Lord Parshwanatha. This 1500-year-old beautifully sculptured idol is adorned with 1008 headed snake. A beautiful sight of offering milk to the god on the full moon and new moon days (Poornima and Amavasya), where milk travels through all the 1008 heads before it smears the whole idol. The other sacred places or places of worship include Thi Yelagur, Tikota, Sindgi, Salotgi, Indi, Almel, Agarkhed, etc.

4. Gagan Mahal: As the name suggests, a palace and a Durbar Hall (Meeting Hall) were built by Ali Adil Shah I around 1561, is a roofless structure. The main attraction of the palace is the great central arch with a span of 60 feet and 9 inches, which is an exquisite example of the Indo-Islamic architecture 5. Being located North of Karnataka, Vijayapura is a warm location. The best time to visit Vijayapura is post-monsoon i.e. from October to February. The weather is pleasant and comfortable to visit the monuments. A lot of walking is involved so ensure you carry enough drinking water and wear comfortable shoes.

How to reach

Vijayapura is well connected via road and rail all over Karnataka. Vijayapura is about 524 km from the state capital Bangalore. Vijayapura is also the best base station for visiting other heritage sites like Badami , Aihole , and Pattadakal . By Air Under the Udaan scheme, Kalaburagi is the closest airport and is approximately 166 km away but with limited flights. The other two airports Hubbali and Belagavi , both around 200 km are convenient airports to reach Vijayapura. By Train Vijayapura has a railway station connecting to most of the major cities in Karnataka and Maharashtra. By Road Located North of Karnataka, Vijayapura has easy access to Karnataka, Maharashtra, and the Telangana region. The state-owned bus service, KSRTC has a service from Bangalore and other major towns of Karnataka.

My friends looked at me weird, pitiful eyes when I told them I will travel to Bijapur to see the city. To be honest, the plan was to go to Hampi for the weekend and add a few days for Badami and Bijapur since they are on the same route north.

But this isn’t a popular road-trip route. I mean, most people won’t even go to business trip here. So my friends may have thought that I have lost taste. But I wanted to see Gol Gumbaz. I had read about it in my history books, and I wanted to feel it.

I knew I may not come this far again by myself so I overplanned my trip and I have to admit it came with some surprises. Most of it came with the gorgeous buildings in the city that nobody knows about.

If you are in the area and a history and art enthusiast, make the effort to visit Bijapur. It is an old city with several heritage sites (sadly the maintenance is poor). And the people are so warm and welcoming.

Let’s get on with it. Here is everything you need to know to plan a trip to Bijapur.

But before that, we need to understand what makes Bijapur important in history.

A brief History of Bijapur

The first civilization in Bijapur dates back to the 6 th century. From the 6 th to the 14 th century Chalukyas, Hoysalas and the Yadavas ruled Bijapur or Vijayapura  that were all Hindu rulers. You cannot find any significant remains from that period.

In the 14 th century, Bijapur came under the Sultanate of Delhi and later under Bahamani Sultanate. It disintegrated into five states called the Deccan Sultanates. Bijapur prospered to its zenith during this time. The rulers under the Adil Shah dynasty built grand forts, beautiful domes, palaces and were great connoisseurs of art, music and poetry.

Aurangzeb invaded Bijapur and it passed on to the Nizams of Hyderabad, to Marathas and the came under the British rule leading to modern present-day India. Nothing significant happened in Bijapur during these times and its past glory gradually went into oblivion.

Where is Bijapur Located?

Bijapur is located in north Karnataka almost bordering Maharashtra. It is 530 km from Bangalore, 550 km from Mumbai and 384 km from Hyderabad.

The city is located in the area of the Vijayanagar Empire and you can make the trip to Hampi, Bijapur and other UNESCO World Heritage sites at Patadakkal and Aihole with a few hours’ road journey.

How to reach Bijapur?

There is currently no airport at Bijapur. The closest airport is in Belgaum which is 158 km away and you can take a cab from the airport (costs around ₹3,000). Railways and roadways connect Bijapur extensively with nearby cities. Here is how to reach Bijapur.

Train to Bijapur

There are a couple of trains every day to Bijapur from Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and other major cities. You can also find regular local trains from Badami every day that take around 2.5 hours.

The station code for Bijapur is BJP which is located in the centre of the city. You can easily find local affordable transport just outside the station. You can check the tickets to Bijapur from your city on trainman.in and book them on the official Indian railways website .

Bus to Bijapur

All types of buses run to Bijapur from all major cities in Karnataka and a few in Maharashtra. You can take an overnight bus from Bangalore or Mumbai and arrive in Bijapur the next day. Or you can take an early morning bus from Hyderabad that will take around 6.5 hours.

Regular local buses run from Badami to Bijapur which takes around 4 hours and even Hospet (Hampi). You can directly board one at the bus station and buy the ticket on the spot. For a longer journey book your bus tickets at redbus.in .

Taxi to Bijapur

If you are with family or in a group at Hampi or Badami, you can also get a day or two-day cab to and back from Bijapur. A basic 4-seater taxi from Badami will cost you around ₹3,200 for a one-way trip and ₹6,400 for a round trip (for two days).

The same will cost you starting ₹5,200 for a one-way trip from Hampi to Bijapur and the double back (for two days). Taking a cab from Bangalore or Mumbai can be too much since the journey is long. How to go around in Bijapur?

Bijapur is a rather decent sized town and you will need transport to move around. If you are not taking a cab or a private vehicle to Bijapur, you still make use of the options available there. I suggest you don’t try taking the buses inside the city since there aren’t many; the routes are confusing and overcrowding is common.

Auto-rickshaws or tuk tuks in Bijapur

Auto-rickshaws are easily available inside the city. You can find one in every corner of the road. There are some public autos that run on set routes (like buses). You can spot them calling the destination. But they are extremely overcrowded.

Hire a personal auto-rickshaw instead if you aren’t used to a city like this. The rickshaws usually run by the meter. But the driver sees a tourist,  sometimes they may say that the meter broke to give a quote of their choice. If it isn’t exorbitant, hop on but make sure you fix a price beforehand. You can book one for the whole day too that includes showing around 6-7 sites at ₹300.

Paddle rickshaws in Bijapur

Typical to India’s two-tier cities, these are simple carriages attached to a bicycle paddled by men. The old rickshaws usually require labour. But motor-driven e-rickshaws are slowly replacing them.

Again, you will have to tell them your destination and they will quote you a price. If that seems okay (use maps to check the distance), hop on. They are usually pretty affordable and I wouldn’t mind handing a generous tip afterwards for the manual drivers.

Tonga or Horse carriages in Bijapur

Now you won’t find this in most cities. Horse carriages are common in Bijapur and I hopped on one for the experience. Apart from the horse-poo stink (which is bearable), I think it was so much fun. Go through the same drill of fixing the price and negotiation. It is a fun way to see the city

Places to see in Bijapur

The city of Bijapur is more or less located where once the fort of Bijapur stood. The fort was built on a citadel with an outer moat as protection from invaders. Most of the ruins of palaces like Anand Mahal, Mehtar Mahal, Barah Kaman and old mosques were a part of the fort inside the citadel.

However, today you will find a bustling city will ruin sprinkled across the town. Take special notes of the gates like Shahapur gate as they used to be the entry point to the fort.

‘Where is the largest dome in India?’ – This is a common question in most GK exams. The answer is, of course, Gol Gumbaz which translates to ‘the circular dome’. But doesn’t it make you curious? Just one question and one building could make Bijapur a tourist attraction.

Gol Gumbaz is an important part of the local tourism in Bijapur too. You can find locals with large family groups visiting the monument and later relaxing on the ground with neatly trimmed gardens. The tomb of Muhammad Adil Shah lies on the inside.

The building itself is quite simple if you compare it to other archaeological gems in the country. The square walls with conical arches support a large visible dome on the top. The four arches (that you can climb) on the sides makes the distinction of Indo-Islamic school of architecture. A very unique feature is that the tomb echoes even the smallest sounds echo up to 12 times. Try clapping softly.

It is a shame where domes of similar size from the Pantheon in Rome to Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence attracts so much attention while Gol Gumbaz still sits rather neglected.

Gol Gumbaz ticket price: ₹25 for Gol Gumbaz for Indian citizens, ₹300 for foreign travellers. Free for kids less than 15 years of age. Additional ₹25 for a museum in the premises showcasing Chinese parchment, carpets and antiques.

Gol Gumbaz timings: Open from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm every day of the week. Last entry at 5.40 pm.

How to reach Gol Gumbaz: Gol Gumbaz is located right opposite to the Vijaypura Railway station and you can even walk to it.

Ibrahim Roza

Built in the 17 th century, Ibrahim Roza is a set of two buildings facing each other as the mausoleum of Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his queen Taj Sultana on one side and a mosque on the other. A Persian architect designed the mausoleum who is also buried here. Persian elements of design are also evident in the building with calligraphy and motifs on the doors and pillars. Don’t miss this place.

Neatly trimmed gardens surround the main building with conical topiaries alongside the main pathway. The best time to visit this place is in the evening hours after the heat has subsided. You will need to remove your shoes at the entrance and the floor is burning hot during noon.

Ibrahim Roza ticket price: The entrance fee is ₹25 for Indian nationals. You need to pay Additional ₹25 per camera you take and ₹10 for each pair of shoes to keep (you need to remove them).

Ibrahim Roza timings: The place is open from 6.00 am to 6.00 pm every day of the week.

Jamia Masjid

The Jamia Masjid (or the Jumma Mosque) is probably the largest mosque in Deccan India. It was built in the 16 th century. Now visiting the mosque is up to your personal beliefs, but if you don’t mind, make a visit. It is one of the few mosques open for tourists and they really welcome people from all religions.

Located in the middle of the bustling town, your rickshaw driver will have to specifically tell you when you have arrived or you just wouldn’t know. The mosque is huge with the prayer halls, decorated doors in gold paint and Persian calligraphy. There is a courtyard too will gardens, fountains and a small reservoir.

The people at the mosque (I am not sure if that was the priest) really took the time to show me around and tell me some interesting facts. Mind you, I was on a solo trip. I would still go back in a heartbeat. It is free for everyone to enter but you must dress conservatively. Women should especially cover their head with a scarf.

It can host the largest number of people for prayers. I don’t remember the number (online sources vary from 2.5k to 18k).

Jamia Masjid timings: There is no official time to visit. But you can head at any time in the day except for Friday which is the prayer day for Muslims or any day of celebration.

Barah Kaman

Barah Khaman is the unfinished mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah II. The name comes from 12 arches that stand vertically as well as horizontally to make the base of the structure. You can see the remains of the abandoned building today. People have made assumptions from historical data that the building was supposed to surpass Gol Gumbaz.

No one really knows why they abandoned the construction. Now, it does not carry a wow factor, they are only ruins, but if you have time, you can make a stop. Neat gardens surround the ruins. It is free to enter.

Malik-e-maidan and Upli Burz

Malik-e-maidan is a large (like really large) canon. Its origin is rumoured to be in Ahmednagar and was captured as a war trophy. The gun is so heavy (around 55 tonnes) that it took 400 oxen, 10 elephants and hundreds of soldiers to transport.

According to the legend, its explosion was so loud that the person who sets it alight had to jump into a nearby pool of water in order to save himself from deafening. As for the appearance, it has calligraphic decorations and a lion with an elephant inside its jaws near the mouth. The gun is always cool to touch even during super-hot summers.

Just near to Malik-e-maidan is a stone tower with circular steps reaching to its rooftop. Another canon sits at the top that was used as a defence mechanism against enemies. It used to be a defensive tower used for fortification in the 16 th century. You can still see some scattered remains of the surrounding walls. The top gives a decent view of the city, especially during sunset.

Both these places are free to visit. Guides are not available in the area neither is any solid information, so read up before you go.

Mehtar Mahal

Mehtar Mahal is a rather small three-storeyed palace. A lovely piece of architecture but sadly ignored with no maintenance. It was built by a sweeper in 1620 when Ibrahim AdilShah paid him a large sum of money of 1500 gold coins towards his leprosy as kindness. Mehtar Mahal literally translates to ‘the palace of sweeper’.

The small palace is built in Indo-Saracenic style of architecture best seen in buildings built by the Mughals. The place has beautiful floral inscriptures, a balcony in front as seen in royal palaces and small minarets on either side. A mosque is right behind the palace. The place is free to visit.

Shivagiri temple

The 85-feet tall sculpture is slowly gathering popularity as a small pilgrimage with the neighbouring Hindu population. The statue is one of the largest in India. It was built by sculptors from Shimoga. The temple premise is located 3 km from Bijapur.

The place is clean with a small park and smaller sculptures of Hindu gods like Radha Krishna, Nandi (shiva’s escort) and even Buddha in the premise. A good place to relax after the chaos and a busy day sightseeing in Bijapur.

Other places to visit in Bijapur

Gagan Mahal: Gagan Mahal used to be the royal residency of the kings of the Sultanate with the main durbar or the royal court. The palace was built in Persian style with stone walls and wooden roofs. However, today only the ruins of stone walls remain. The scale of the building still remains impressive. The grounds are open from 8 am to 5 pm with a small entrance fee.

Afzal Khan’s Cenotaph: The ruins of an important burial place stands in the middle of nowhere. While the building is still impressive even without much care, the place is far from Bijapur. Make the journey only if you have exhausted your list of things to do in Bijapur.

Where to Stay in Bijapur?

While there aren’t a large pool of properties available in Bijapur to stay, you can still find a hotel to your requirement but most of them are on the pricier side. A day’s rent can start from ₹2,000 and more for a mid-range hotel.

If you are looking for a budget hotel, I suggest you find one on the spot but check the room thoroughly for stuff like cameras if you are a female traveller or have one in company. You can find some rare listings on Airbnb as well.

Best time to visit Bijapur

Winter (October – February): This is the best time to visit Bijapur. The sky is clear with almost no rainfall. The temperature hovers from 21-25°C with a pleasant evening. It usually never gets too cold in Bijapur. The humidity is also at its lowest.

Monsoons (July – September): I personally love monsoons. And it never rains the whole day in Bijapur. So you can still plan your visit during this time. Although rains may disrupt some activities, you can still plan around it. The humidity in the air increases. Do not mind the mud.

Summers (March – June): Summers are harsh and arid in this region. North Karnataka is also prone to water shortages. Heatwaves are also common in the area and the temperature sometimes crosses 40°C. I will not recommend travelling during this time. But if you do, hire an AC cab and go out during the evenings only.

What to wear in Bijapur

Bijapur is a rather conservative town with a large Muslim population. While you are not expected to completely cover yourself in local garbs, I will suggest go for modest clothing. Men should wear full pants and t-shirts with sleeves. Avoid shorts or sleeveless tees.

For women, it is okay to wear full denim (not ripped) with a modest loose top showing no cleave. Although you may feel even more comfortable if you wear salwar kameez that goes very well with the town culturally. Keep a scarf with you to cover your head when needed (handkerchiefs for men).

You can also carry thick socks for the times you need to go barefoot near mausoleums so that a hot floor does not burn you.

My Grievances with Bijapur

While I personally make a point to not comment on things that I cannot do much about, it is disheartening to see the state of the monuments in Bijapur. Most of the places are not looked after and sometimes people like ticket collectors give you old tickets to pocket the money from the revenue (They are probably paid meagrely).

You may find the city dirty as well and spot garbage or sewage water near important historical sights. I am still unsure if we as tourists can do much about it. Although, make sure that you pay the tickets using online apps so that the money directly goes to the responsible organisation. Handing out tips where it’s due will also help the local economy.
