Morning or Afternoon? The Best Time of Day for Kauai Helicopter Tours & Other FAQs

This post may contain some affiliate links, which means I’ll make a little money on anything you choose to purchase. But of course, I only recommend my absolute favorites to you. Thank you for supporting the brands that make HulaLand possible.

Kauai was pretty much made to be seen from the air. Only 20% of the island is developed (including roads!) which means that most visitors only see a tiny fraction of its splendors. And boy does it have splendors.

While every Hawaiian Island has absolutely stunning scenery, Kauai is overwhelming in the “jagged, majestic green mountains that look like the backdrop to every single Jurassic Park movie” department.

Sadly, many of its most beautiful sites are so remote and difficult to reach that they remain unseen by all but the most intrepid hikers. And that’s why helicopter tours are more popular on Kauai than any other Hawaiian Islands.

FAQs about Kauai Helicopter Tours

For most people, a helicopter ride is a once in a lifetime bucket list experience. Because it seems like such a “big deal” (and maybe because it’s also so expensive), I get asked a lot of questions about tours. Here’s a round up of frequently asked questions…

Is a Kauai helicopter tour “worth it”?

I had never been on a helicopter before (and haven’t since), but it seemed like a real shame to miss out on a helicopter tour on Kauai. And I really just can’t say enough good things about my helicopter flight on Kauai. And there aren’t words to adequately describe the things I saw. All I can say is, if you’re on the fence about doing a helicopter tour on your trip to Kauai, do it!!! I’ve done a lot of tours, excursions, and activities on Kauai, but this is one of the few that I would repeat (others were amazing, but once was enough).

What’s the best time of day for Kauai helicopter tours? Morning or afternoon?

If you’re paying all of that money, you want to get it right. Generally, mornings are going to consistently provide the best flying conditions. Wind and weather pick up in the afternoon and while you can never quite predict the weather, mornings are usually the best bet.

However…the lighting during the afternoon is best along the Napali Coast. It’s kind of a technicality because the Napali Coast is impressive any time of day, but here’s how it works: the mountains along the Napali run north to south. The sun rises in the east so the sun is mostly behind the mountains during the morning hours leaving them somewhat shady. By late afternoon, the sun shines directly on the coast making all those crags and spires sparkle a bit more.

So is there really that big of a difference? Yes and no. I would say for the casual tourist, morning is totally fine. All of the boat tours of the Napali run during the morning as well and it’s spectacular. If you’re a super serious photographer tasked with getting the perfect shot (I’m a professional travel blogger and I wouldn’t even call myself that) then late afternoon is probably best.

But just know you run a bigger risk of your flight getting canceled later in the day if weather develops (which could also happen in the morning).

***Want to save major $$$ on your trip to Hawaii? I get asked ALL the time how I’m able to travel so often to Hawaii and stay at really nice resorts. Well, my favorite travel hack is cashing in points to score free airfare and free nights at some of Hawaii’s most high end resorts. Read my full guide on the exact system I use to max out credit card rewards here . Seriously, it’s going to save you soooo much money.

What to wear / bring on a helicopter tour?

It’s a quick flight so you’re not going to need much! There are lockers at most of the tour facilities to leave your belongings. You’ll definitely want to wear dark clothing if you’re doing a helicopter tour with doors on. This cuts down on the glare in your photos if photographing through windows. If it’s a doors off tour it’s not as important. But if you’re on a doors off tour, you’ll need a strap for your phone.

When is the best time to book your tour?

Helicopter tours are VERY popular on Kauai (more so than the other Hawaiian Islands) so book in advance. I also recommend booking it early on in your trip so if you have bad weather there’s time to reschedule.

Are helicopter tours safe?

I’m not going to give you a yes or no on this one. I’ve done a tour with no problems and soooooo many tours are flown every day on Kauai, but there are records of accidents (usually because of ill maintained equipment or pilot inexperience regarding weather). You can review records from the National Transportation Safety Board here before you make your final decision regarding specific companies.

Side Note: If you’re looking for a rental car for your trip, I LOVE Discount Hawaii Car Rentals . They’re seriously the only company I ever use. They’ll give you the very best prices, you don’t have to reserve with a credit card or pay until you show up, you can cancel and re-book anytime if you find a better rate, and they usually have a special that adds additional drivers for no fee. It’s a no brainer. Click here to check rates for your trip.

Which company has the cheapest helicopter tours?

I don’t know, but seriously…don’t pick a tour provider based on price. Seriously. There are a TON of companies that offer helicopter tours of Kauai, but I don’t believe this is something you shop around to find the best deal. Helicopter and small airplane crashes aren’t unheard of in Hawaii and it’s usually a result of inexperienced pilots or ill maintained equipment. This is a time when paying more to go with a reputable company is a necessity.

What are the most popular/recommended tour companies?

While I’m not going to do a rundown on every helicopter company here and there may be some good ones I’m missing, here are my top three that I would feel comfortable with:

best time helicopter tour kauai

Blue Hawaiian : This is the company that I personally used. Blue Hawaiian is the granddaddy of all the tour operators. They fly on every major island, and their fleet is modern and impressive. I think they offer the most comfortable flight conditions available. They only fly doors ON flights. Their flights start at $339/person.

Jack Harter Helicopters : Jack Harter is the original Kauai helicopter company and they offer some pretty amazing options. Their star tour is a 60 minute flight in a Hughes 500 (which seats three in the front including the pilot and only two in the back) with the doors OFF. This flight starts at $359. In addition to feeling more adventurous, booking this flight also ensures that you will have a window seat. I would consider the front middle to still be a window seat since the window stretches out to your feet right in front of you. There’s something about feeling the wind in your face as you’re hovering over a waterfall, but if you’re a nervous flier, I would probably stick to doors on.

Island Helicopters : Island Helicopters is the only company to offer a landing during their flight. If you’re a fan of Jurassic Park, you’ll love this tour. In addition to the traditional circle island tour, it includes a stop at Manawaiopuna Falls (well known from the opening scene in Jurassic Park). This tour is $373 and lasts 80 minutes (including the landing).

What will I See on a Kauai Helicopter Tour?

Here’s a rundown of what I saw on my flight with Blue Hawaiian:

Once we were airborne, we flew over Nawiliwili Harbor and along the south side of the island. Our pilot (Bryan from Tennessee!) was great about pointing out places of interest and filling us in on the island’s geography and other interesting facts. We got some good views of Poipu before flying over Hanapepe Valley and on to the first major site of the flight: Waimea Canyon.

best time helicopter tour kauai

Waimea Canyon is a stunner from the roadside overlooks but from the air it was just spectacular. We flew down into the canyon, and up close to a waterfall but it was the rainbow(s) that stole the show here. It was a pretty special sight.

best time helicopter tour kauai

We flew over the edge of the canyon and came down over the Napali Coast (one of the big selling points of a helicopter ride over Kauai) and it was…raining! A lot. But it was still so amazing. Even in the rain, I was still blown away. We flew up the coast, oohing and awing, until we got to Ke’e beach and then followed the north shore into Hanalei Bay (we got a great view of Tunnels).

best time helicopter tour kauai

From here we flew into Hanalei Valley and then into Wai’ale’ale Crater (the birthplace of Kauai). This part of the flight was the real highlight for me. Hanalei Valley is so lush and green and getting to go into the crater (Bryan said only about 40% of flights get the right conditions to go in) was an otherworldly experience. The pictures just don’t do this place justice. The clouds were hanging low, it was raining lightly, and it was still gorgeous. Our pilot told us that many people have an emotional reaction to seeing the crater and it’s easy to see why. Our otherwise chatty flight grew silent as we flew through.

best time helicopter tour kauai

The crater was our last major site on the trip and from there we flew back across the island to Lihue. We had an uneventful landing (always a good thing!) and disembarked. On our way in, each group got to have their picture snapped in front of the helicopter.

Is it scary?

As someone who has mild to moderate anxiety and a decent fear of heights…I was a little nervous beforehand, I got a little psyched out once I was buckled in, but as soon as we were in the air I was completely fine.

I have no issues with motion sickness, but I was told that if you’re prone to it then you should take meds before your flight.

On Another Note: If you’re looking for a condo or vacation rental for your trip, I always book with Vrbo . They’ve got the largest selection of rentals you’ll find anywhere and you can easily filter to find exactly what you’re looking for. Need a specific number of bedrooms and bathrooms? Narrowed it down to a certain location? Want flexible cancellation terms? Need to stay under a fixed budget? Click here to search for Kauai vacation rentals for your trip.

How do they decide where everybody sits in the helicopter & what is the boarding process like?

Most companies leave out of the Lihue Heliport, which is right next to the airport. Blue Hawaiian’s headquarters are in a nice building with a check-in desk, gift shop, restrooms, and safety briefing area. When you check in, they take your weight really discreetly (I didn’t even know that’s what they were doing!) and this is how they determine seating assignments.

About a half hour before our flight, we watched a safety video and got our personal flotation devices (a small pouch you wear strapped around your waist). This is also where we got our pilot’s name and seat assignments (there were three helicopters leaving at our departure time).

Everything is assigned based on weight distribution. The helicopters that Blue Hawaiian uses seat three in the front (Including the pilot) and four in the back. I did the flight solo and was told that I wouldn’t be put in a back middle seat but that if you’re a couple one of you will for sure be in a middle seat.

best time helicopter tour kauai

Next we went outside and waited on the lanai and watched the helicopters land from the previous tour, unload, and get refueled before we were loaded on. This flight was on an ecostar, which is known for being one of the more “comfortable” aircrafts you can fly on.

I was seat #1 which is front middle right next to the pilot (I would consider it a window seat) so I was the first one loaded. The flight crew led us out to the helipad one by one, buckled us in, and handed us our headsets. Once we were loaded, we could talk to the pilot through the headsets.

Maui vs Kauai

Here’s one more really important thing you need to know before your Hawaii trip…

Reservations You Need to Make BEFORE Your Hawaii Trip

You’ve got your airfare, hotel, rental car and your big activities booked, so you should be good to go, right? Wrong!

Travel is BOOMING in Hawaii so a lot of state and national parks used the closure and reopening to institute reservation systems at some of the island’s most popular spots to make things a little more sustainable.

That means that there are now over half a dozen sites (beaches, trailheads, etc.) that require advance reservations. And some sell out well before you arrive on the island so you really need to have some sort of a plan.

I recently saw somebody in a Hawaii travel group post in a panic that they didn’t know they had to make reservations for things in advance…they thought they could just show up and “go with the flow.” I was tempted to say, well, “as long as the flow doesn’t take you somewhere that requires reservations, you can!” ; )

But I don’t want YOU to be that person, so I’ve pulled together a list of all the places you need to reserve entry in advance (plus all the details on booking windows, price, links, etc.) and a handful of popular tourist hotspots that book out really far in advance too.

Haleakala National Park (Maui)

To visit Haleakala National Park for sunrise at the summit, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are required to enter the park gates between 3AM and 7AM (sunrise hours).

Online reservations are $1 per reservation/vehicle PLUS you’ll pay the park entrance fee of $30/vehicle when you arrive (National Park annual passes are also accepted at the gate).

The reservation booking window opens 60 days in advance at 7AM HST. There are also a limited number of tickets released two days before.

You can make one reservation every three days with the same account. So if you want to make reservations for back to back days (in case of weather/conditions), you’ll need to do so with separate accounts (email addresses).

If you can’t get reservations for sunrise, you can enter the park anytime after 7AM without reservations. The summit is spectacular during the day and you don’t need reservations for sunset.

I strongly recommend creating an account before and making sure you’re logged in at 7AM HST because it’s not uncommon for reservations to sell out quickly.

Waianapanapa State Park (Maui)

To visit Maui’s famous black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park on the Road to Hana, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are required to visit the beach and are distributed in windows from 7AM-10AM, 10AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-3PM, and 3PM-6PM. And they are pretty strict about exiting by the end of your window time (you can arrive anytime within your window).

It’s $5/person to enter plus $10/vehicle to park and those fees are paid when you book your time slot.

Reservations open up 30 days in advance.

Iao Valley State Park (Maui)

To visit the lush, green mountains and hike at Iao Valley State Park, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are offered for 90 minute time slots beginning at 7AM and ending at 6PM. They ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your time slot.

Entry is $5/person plus $10/vehicle to park.

Diamond Head (Oahu)

To hike to the top of Waikiki’s famous Diamond Head, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are offered in two hour increments beginning at 6AM (6AM-8AM, 8AM-10AM, etc.) and ending at 6PM. If you’re parking onsite, they ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your reservation window.

Tip: I recommend booking one of the first two time slots because there isn’t much shade on this hike and it gets pretty hot.

Hanauma Bay (Oahu)

To snorkel at Oahu’s pristine Hanauma Bay, you must make reservations in advance here.

Entry times are staggered in 10 minute increments from 7AM to 1:20PM with roughly 1000 slots being assigned in advance every day.

Reservations can be made two days in advance and they open at 7AM HST. They’re usually gone in minutes (if not seconds).

If you’re unable to get an advanced reservation, you can try for a day of, walk in ticket. They open at 6:45AM and they only have a limited number available. Everyone in your group needs to be present when you purchase your tickets in person.

There are no reservations for parking and it’s first come, first serve. $3/vehicle.

It’s $25/person to snorkel at Hanauma Bay (12 and under, active military, and locals with HI ID are free).

The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is open Wednesday through Sunday (CLOSED MONDAY AND TUESDAY) from 6:45AM-4PM. Last entry is at 1:30PM, the beach is cleared at 3:15PM and you have to leave the facility by 4PM.

Jellyfish patterns can also affect whether or not the bay is open so double check the day before/day of.

USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor (Oahu)

If you want to take the boat tour at Pearl Harbor out to the USS Arizona, it’s recommended to make advance reservations here.

Online reservations are guaranteed a specific boarding time to go out to the USS Arizona. If you’re unable to get an advance reservation, you can wait standby when you arrive. The line could be short (15 minutes or so) or long (hours) and it just depends on the day (if they’re having problems with the loading dock sometimes they don’t take many from the standby line) and the time of day.

Reservations are supposed to open up 60 days in advance, but keep an eye on your exact dates, because lately they’ve actually been opening up about 57ish days in advance???

They also release a small batch of tickets the day before.

The boat ride out to the USS Arizona is free, but it’s $1 to make the reservations online.

They recently started charging $7/vehicle for parking at Pearl Harbor.

Haena State Park / Kalalau Trail (Kauai)

If you want to hike Kauai’s famous Kalalau Trail, you must make advance reservations here. You’ve got three options here:

1) Parking & Entry: This is the most flexible option and also the most limited. THESE RESERVATIONS SELL OUT IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. There are three time slots available: 6:30AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-5:30PM and 4:30PM to sunset. You can purchase multiple time slots if you want to stay longer. It’s $10/timeslot (parking) plus $5/person and you have to reserve every person when you initially book. Everybody has to arrive in the same car and your ID needs to match the reservation.

2) Shuttle & Entry: If you can’t get parking at the trailhead, there’s also a shuttle option. Shuttle reservations are $35/person (16+), $25/person (ages 4-15), 3 and under can ride free. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes 6:20AM to 6:40PM.

3) Entry Only: If you’re a Hawaiian resident (with HI ID) or someone WITH a Hawaiian resident, you can purchase entry only for $5/person with no advance reservations. Also, if you’re walking or biking to the trailhead you can do this option. But there is NOWHERE to park in the area to walk in. So this really only works for those with bikes or who are staying close enough to walk. They will tow your car if you park outside the designated areas.

The reservation window opens 30 days in advance at 12AM HST. The parking & entry option usually sells out in a minute, but the shuttle availability will last longer.

There are a TON of FAQs here including the possibility of snagging a canceled reservation.

Other Things to Book in Advance

Hawaii is a busy place these days! Besides the state and national parks above, here’s a handful of miscellaneous things you should make reservations for in advance (if they’re on your radar):

Mama’s Fish House (Maui) : The iconic spot is the most popular restaurant in Hawaii and dinner reservations usually start filling up about 6 months in advance (they open up bookings 18 months in advance). Make reservations through their website and if the dates you want are already booked, you can join a waitlist. Most people have pretty good success getting in on the waitlist (even if it’s for lunch).

Old Lahaina Luau (Maui) : Honestly, any luau you’re planning to attend you should book early, but most people are usually shocked how far out the Old Lahaina Luau books out. Book it as soon as you know your dates (I think they open at the six month window). They also have a waitlist.

Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour (Oahu) : Everybody loves Jurassic Park so getting to ride UTVs where they filmed the movies is very popular. The ranch offers a lot of different tours but the UTV tours usually book out a couple of months in advance.

Spa Reservations : If you’re staying at a resort with a spa (or planning on visiting one), don’t wait until you arrive to make your reservations. I’d make them at least a month in advance.

Tee Times : Same for golf, reserve your tee times well in advance.

Dining Reservations : Any “fancy” or resort restaurant is likely to be booked up these days so if you like having a nice dinner every night, make your plans in advance.

How to choose a helicopter tour in Kaua‘i

Mar 25, 2022 • 5 min read

Seeing Kauaʻi from the air is a thrilling and singular experience that may just define your trip to the Garden Island.

While expensive, it’s the only way to see much of the island, the majority of which is privately owned. Helicopter tours are by far the most popular option: while planes can fly no lower than 1000–1500ft, helicopters are allowed to fly as low as 500ft and can hover, too. The tours are popular with honeymooners – and with everyone who loves the romance of nature.

Here’s our guide to the best plane tours and helicopter tours in Kauaʻi.

How much is a helicopter tour?

The most popular way to see Kauaʻi from the air is to take a helicopter ride. Most helicopter tour companies depart from the airport in Lihuʻe ; trips generally last 60 to 90 minutes, and start at around $229. Tip: make reservations online ahead of time to save a bit of money.

The rugged coast of Kauai as seen from a helicopter above

How to choose a helicopter tour

It’s worth doing some careful research before choosing an operator. You’ll have to decide what kind of aircraft and tour you want (some land in neat places), and whether you want the doors on or off (some passengers like the visibility, others don’t like the exposure to wind and possibly rain).

Doors-off helicopters are the way to go if you are an avid photographer (and don't suffer from vertigo). But expect conditions that are noisy and windy – and maybe just a little bit scary. Keep in mind that on a six-seater helicopter, two people may be stuck in the middle. While you can request a window seat, it’s the captain has discretion to move people around for weight balance.

You also get to choose from big-window, little-window and bubble helicopters (the last like the ones seen on M*A*S*H ). The big differences will always be visibility and noise. More-modern helicopters are quieter and generally have big windows. You always wear headphones so you can talk with fellow passengers with a lower din, but even a slight reduction in sound can make your trip more pleasant. Then again, some of the older, louder helicopters have a sweet, retro,  Magnum P.I. –esque vibe that makes for a thrilling ride.

Make sure to check your operator’s weather policy before booking. Rain delays do happen, and tour routes will vary depending on rain and winds. Cancellations or postponements by operators may happen on short notice. Consider booking early during your stay, so you can reschedule for later if need be.

To check any tour company’s comprehensive safety record, consult the National Transportation Safety Board accident database .

Safety and apparel recommendations

Ideally, strap everything down (hats, phones, cameras, etc.). It can get a little cold, so bring a jacket and long pants, plus decent shoes in case your tour includes a landing.

Always approach a helicopter from the front (never the back). The captain will generally indicate which side you should board. Put your head down, and hold onto your hat, just like they do in the movies – then relax and look outward as you listen to ongoing narration from the knowledgeable pilots. You can feel free to tip them afterward, but it’s not required.

An aerial shot of cliffs plunging to the lush Nualolo Valley in Kauaʻi

Where do helicopter tours go?

From Lihuʻe, expect to see the Nawiliwili Harbor and the Menehune Fishpond, Kipu Kai and the Tunnel of Trees, Manawaiopuna Falls in Hanapepe Valley, Olokele Canyon, Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast , North Shore beaches like Keʻe and Hanalei , and Mt Waiʻaleʻale. While the rips up impossibly steep canyons are an adrenaline junkie’s dream, it’s really the close proximity to waterfalls – many of which can only be seen from the air – that makes these trips amazing.

The tours generally follow pretty standardized routes, but you can talk with your pilot to customize your tour experience, especially if it’s just you and your family or sweetheart taking the flight. This means getting closer to (or further away from) the ground, making more acrobatic banking turns or going with a more easy-breezy approach – however way you wish to fly.

For a really unique trip, consider a tour with Niʻihau Helicopters ($465 per person), which flies over much of Niʻihau island (avoiding the population center of Puʻuwai), then ends with snorkeling off one of the island’s beaches. Lunch, snacks and drinks are included (with a five-person minimum required).

Best helicopter operators in Kaua‘i

  • Island Helicopters offers a landing on top of Manawaiopuna Falls, more commonly known as Jurassic Falls.
  • Mauna Loa Helicopters is noteworthy for the chance to fly with no doors...freaky but fun.
  • Jack Harter Helicopters lets you take a flight with one of the pioneers of flight tourism on the island.
  • Blue Hawaiian Helicopters flies high-end choppers that are said to be less noisy.
  • Safari Helicopters offers an ecotour with a 40-minute stop at a wildlife refuge.

A woman laughs as she flies in a biplane over Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i

Fixed-wing scenic flights

When you can take a helicopter right to the cone of Mt Waiʻaleʻale and hover there to your heart’s content, there seems to be little point in choosing a fixed-wing aircraft to tour Kauaʻi. There is one exception, however: a tour in an open-cockpit biplane, which flies so slowly it may as well be hovering.

The combination of the romance of early aviation, the sensation of the wind and roaring engine, and the emerald tropical island sliding below – not to mention sitting so close to your cabin-mate you may as well be in an embrace – makes this many a honeymooner’s first choice.

In fact, if it were up to passengers, biplanes would probably be as popular as helicopters on Kauaʻi, but there’s currently only one company that offers these scenic flights: AirVentures Hawaii , based in Lihuʻe. The tour leaves from Lihuʻe Airport and takes you north past the Wailua River and Kilauea Lighthouse . From there, you travel up the lush Hanalei Valley, continuing over the ridge to see cascading waterfalls and 4000ft cliffs. The flight then continues north past Hanalei to the Na Pali Coast, soaring past waterfalls and canyon drops through Waimea Canyon, and back to the South Shore, where you might just spot your hotel. The company even lets you keep the cool throwback hat and goggles as a souvenir of your only-in-Kauaʻi adventure.

That's why Kauai helicopter tours are so popular, because they let visitors see all the island's attractions from the air, making it easy to scale the highest cliffs and enjoy a bird's-eye view of Kauai's many valleys. Expect to see the unmatched beauty of the Napali Coast, Waimea Canyon and many of the most famous natural wonders on the island.

Ali'i Air Tours & Charters – Kauai Helicopter Tour

Price: From $350 Duration: 1 hour

Ali'i promises no middle seats on its Kauai tour, so each passenger will have exceptional views of Waipo'o falls, Hanapepe Valley, Hanalei Bay and more. Plus, each of its tours are private, so you won't need to share the small helicopter cabin with strangers. Travelers are wowed by the scenery and praise the experienced pilots; a few reviewers were repeat passengers. Some recommended opting for the doors-off option for an extra thrill.

Tours depart several times daily throughout the morning and afternoon. Ali'i also runs an airplane tour of Kauai, as well as a Pearl Harbor airplane tour, which departs from Kauai and spends the day at the Oahu memorial.

Air Ventures Hawaii – Big Kahuna Kauai Air Tour

Price: From $169 Duration: 1 hour

Eco-conscious tourists may want to consider this tour from Air Ventures Hawaii. According to the company, its GippsAero GA8 Airvan uses less fuel than a typical helicopter. Plus, there are no middle seats, so everyone enjoys a thrilling view from the extra-large bubble windows. What's more, the aircraft flies at a slower speed than a helicopter, allowing more time to take in the views. The flight soars past waterfalls, the Kilauea Lighthouse, Lumahai Beach and Waimea Canyon, among other sites. The sights earn rave reviews, and many travelers offer equivalent praise for the pilots.

Flights depart daily in both the morning and afternoon. Air Ventures Hawaii also operates private tours.

Airborne Aviation – Hughes 500 Doors-Off Helicopter

Price: From $319 Duration: 50 minutes

If you're up for an adventure, or just want to capture some spectacular photos, consider this doors-off tour from Airborne Aviation. Flights are limited to four passengers, meaning everyone enjoys a window seat. Without the barrier of windows or doors, you'll be able to snap incredible images of Kauai’s shoreline, waterfalls and canyons. Flyers rave about the views and the skilled, professional pilots. Reviewers do warn, however, that without doors or windows, the ride is quite windy.

Flights are offered daily starting as early as 8:15 a.m. Private tours are also an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fees for Kauai helicopter tours start at $309 per person. However, prices will vary by company, tour length and inclusions.

Tipping is not required, but if you'd like to provide a monetary gesture of gratitude to your pilot/guide, plan to tip between $15 and $20 per person.

Weight limits may vary based on the aircraft, but Federal Aviation Administration regulations state that individual passengers cannot weigh more than 275 pounds and the total group cannot weigh than 650 pounds. In order for the pilot to determine weight distribution in the aircraft, you'll likely be asked to provide your weight at check-in or booking.

Choosing a Fun and Safe Helicopter Tour on Kauai

 TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

A helicopter tour is the best way to see the island of Kauai . With over 70% of the island being inaccessible by land, you'll see areas that can only be seen from the air. You'll also have better views of many parts of the island.

Highlights of most helicopter tours on Kauai include Jurassic Park Falls , the Hanapepe Valley, Waimea Canyon , the Na Pali Coast , the Hanalei Valley, and Mt. Waialeale. Most tours last between 50 minutes and an hour, though some companies offer longer tours that are usually accompanied by a stop.

Safety Considerations

One common concern of most people considering helicopter tours is whether they are safe. The answer is yes. That being said, accidents do happen. The FAA is requiring even more stringent equipment checks and maintenance than ever before. Remember that on Kauai, there have been as many as ten helicopter companies operating at one time with well over 100 flights each day total, depending on the weather. Over the 15 years, that's over 50,000 flights.

When considering a tour company, know that each passenger, by federal regulation, should be given a detailed safety briefing before any flight and instructions on how to use the safety equipment provided. For doors-off flights, it is imperative that all loose objects are secured and that your hands and cameras remain inside the helicopter. You would be right to be suspicious of any tour operator that does not offer a full safety briefing.

Do Your Research

The smart traveler does his or her research and makes sure that they are comfortable with the company they choose. The tour operators recommended in this list are included because they have been tested by the authors of this article, but many other reputable, safe, and enjoyable tours available. It is important for anyone considering a helicopter tour to check out the websites and read reviews before choosing which company to book.

There are two benefits to booking ahead of schedule: One is due to the fact that Kauai has a tropical climate, and it rains a lot there: For your safety and enjoyment, flights often are canceled due to bad weather. It is recommended that you book your helicopter tour early in your visit to Kauai so that you have time to reschedule should it be canceled.

The other reason it is wise to book in advance is that most companies offer significant discounts if you book online.

Helicopter Companies

Here are the helicopter companies currently operating on Kauai. Check their websites for the most up-to-date information on tour schedules and fees.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters

  • Blue Hawaiian, Hawaii's largest and most acclaimed helicopter company, flies state of the art ECO-star helicopters, the first helicopter designed exclusively for touring, on 55-minute "Kauai ECO Adventure" tours from the Lihue Heliport. It is reported that often their flights run shorter, i.e., 48-50 minutes. They also offer private charters.

Island Helicopters

  • With over 30 years of service, Island Helicopters flies the newest Eurocopter A-Star helicopters with custom ceiling to floor glass doors and windows on 50-60 minute "Deluxe Kauai Grand Tours" from the Lihue Heliport. They also are the only company that offers a 90-minute tour that includes a landing at the base of Manawaiopuna Falls (Jurrasic Park Falls). You can read my review of a Jurassic Falls Helicopter Landing Adventure with Island Helicopters.

Jack Harter Helicopters

  • Jack Harter flies six-passenger A-Star helicopters with floor-to-ceiling windows for excellent visibility as well as four-passenger Hughes 500s that are flown with the doors off. They offer 60-65 minute tours in the A-Star & Hughes 50-and-90-minute tours in the A-Star only. All flights are from the Lihue Heliport. You can read my review of a 60-minute flight with Jack Harter Helicopters and view a gallery of 84 photos taken on the flight. This is my personal choice for favorite Kauai helicopter tour company.

Mauna Loa Helicopters

  • Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours flies the four-seater R44 helicopters manufactured by the Robinson Helicopter Company. They fly exclusively private tours for parties of two, three, or four. They offer four tours, including a 50-60-minute "Ultimate Island Tour," a 60-70-minute "Extreme Island Tour," as well pilot training with their "Ultimate Instructional Tour Package," and a special "Photography Flight." They fly from the Lihue Heliport.

Safari Helicopter Tours

  • Safari Helicopter Tours flies the A-Star 350 B2-7 helicopter with mega viewing windows, an onboard two-way communication system utilizing the Generation Bose X noise-canceling headsets, and air conditioning. They offer a 55-minute "Deluxe Waterfall Safari" tour and a 90-minute "Kauai Refuge Eco Tour" that includes a 30-minute stopover at the Kauai Botanical Refuge overlooking Olokele Canyon.

Sunshine Helicopters

  • Sunshine Helicopters, Inc. and Will Squyres Helicopter Tours are now merged together as one company. They offer a 45-50 minute "Ultimate Kauai Experience" tour from the Lihue Heliport using both FX STAR and WhisperSTAR helicopters. They also offer 30-40 minute and 40-50 minute tours from the Princeville Airport on Kauai's North Shore, a convenient location for visitors staying in the Princeville or Hanalei areas.

We did the doors off Kauai helicopter tour. We have previously done a helicopter ride with a different company on Kauai and Jack Harter is definitely above the rest in terms of customer service and friendliness. We had Stephanie as our pilot and she was great. We felt very safe the entire time and she made sure to point out many spots to look out for as we passed over them. Yes it is pricey but this is some of the best money to be spent on Kauai and one of the few ways that you can see the entire island.

This was our first helicopter experience and we did the doors off tour. It was hands down the most beautiful experience ever. It was a bit cloudy/rainy but we got to see some amazing rainbows and great waterfalls. Our pilot was Preston, he was super friendly and made us feel very safe and comfortable. He was very knowledgeable about the island and answered all of our questions. I highly recommend this!

AMAZING experience - even as someone who is afraid of heights, the doors-off helicopter ride was a major highlight of our trip! Worth every penny. Such a unique and up-close way to see the island. We had to reschedule our original flight due to bad weather -- which we really appreciated their commitment to safety and also to making sure we got to see everything! -- and the day we rescheduled for was PERFECT weather and visibility. So I recommend taking their advice to book the flight for early in your trip so you have time to reschedule if needed!

These guys are pros and deliver an extraordinary experience. Check in was organized and gracious. All the staff are friendly and informative. Safety procedures will make you confident in the journey. Our pilot, Preston, was great at narrating the scenery as well as warning us of any upcoming turbulence. The entire flight was smooth with little turbulence and jaw dropping views. Can't recommend highly enough!!

We rode with Eli doing the full island tour (1h). It was a doors on flight with 2 other guests though the helicopter seated 6 so we had lots of room and great views. Eli was an incredible guide, did a great job of entertaining us and giving us history of the island, as well as being very calming to one of the passengers who was quite nervous about flying. 10/10 experience. I am glad we chose to schedule early in our trip because we ended up having to reschedule to 2 days later. Well worth the wait. Also just as an aside, being that there was a mist/sprinkling on and off during our tour, as it often seem to be according to the staff, I’m really glad we chose doors on!

Even though a doors off helicopter ride could sound scary and overwhelming, we are so glad we chose this company. From start to finish, they made the whole experience so seamless. Most importantly we felt safe throughout the entire process!!! We loved our pilot Max and the safety instructors were fun and hilarious! This experience was 10/10 and we will definitely tell our family and friends!!! Thanks for making this such a beautiful memory for us.

From the staff answering the phones, inside the office, the shuttle lady to the pilot this place was hands down the most professional well staffed helicopter tour I have EVER been on. Our pilot was very safe, knowledgeable and personable with us. We had an excellent time with the doors off tour and highly recommended it. I will be back with my kids next year. Thank you!

Doors Off Helicopter Tour Of Kauai: Complete Review

It had been my dream for over four years to visit Kauai. I lived on Oahu for two years and never had the chance to hop over to Kauai. This time I was not only heading over from Oahu but I was so stoked to have booked a doors-off helicopter tour of Kauai. I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited as I was before getting into that helicopter.

BOOKING A HELICOPTER TOUR ON KAUAI

There are a few things to consider when you book a helicopter tour on Kauai.

  • Duration : By the time you take off and land you need 60 minutes to see the whole island. The shorter tour often doesn’t get all the way up to the Na Pali coast, which is the highlight of the tour in my opinion.
  • Doors on or off:  Doors-off means you have a clearer view and less glass in the way for your camera but no other huge advantages. The disadvantage is that the wind can be freezing even on a warm day, the wind can be very strong and you are exposed to the elements such as light rain etc.
  • A plane!?: One final option to throw in the mix is a tour by a light plane. They are actually pretty popular because they are half the price of the helicopter tour and you get to see the Na Pali coastline and more from the air. It’s something to consider.

Helicopter Flight:  The most popular helicopter tour on Kauai is the Kauai Island Highlight Helicopter Tour

Sightseeing Plane: The Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon Scenic Plane Flight are well under $200, which is more than half the cost of the same trip via helicopter.

My Kauai doors-off helicopter experience

I’d seen so many photos of the Na Pali coastline and it had captured my imagination. It had enthralled me to the point that I had based an entire month of my life around Kauai and this flight was intended to be the highlight of that month. It didn’t disappoint in the slightest.

I organized the photography-specific open-door helicopter tour of Kauai so that I could capture the photos of the Kauai Coastline I had been dreaming about. On a photography-specific flight, your pilot will happily double back or fly to the exact position you need for your composition. On a general flight, you will cruise past locations once and if you don’t get the shot it’s tough luck and the tour moves on.

I was a little nervous as we stepped up into the helicopter at Lihue Airport on the island of Kauai. I hate building things up too much in my head. It’s so easy for it to be a letdown. I was hoping this flight was going to live up to my dreams throughout the last four years.

The flight began quite slowly. We were looking out over nice scenery but nothing amazing, mostly farmland. There were lots of fields and a surprising amount of forested mountains. The sheer volume of trees on Kauai is really only observable from the air.

We were just warming up! Our first real action was in Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It was here that our pilot gave us our first opportunity to throw our legs out the side of the doors off the helicopter as we looked down over massive waterfalls. The red rocks of the canyon contrasted magnificently against the immense flow from the falls as they cascaded into the pools below.

The doors off helicopter tour on Kauai warms you up. The doors off helicopter tour on Oahu shoots you straight out into Waikiki followed by Diamond Head crater and from there the trip just rolls on. Whereas on Kauai, you begin across farmland, then cruise through Waimea Canyon, all the time knowing you are heading towards one of the most epic sections of coastline in the world.

Our pilot shot us out at Awaawapuhi valley , one of the many awesome hikes on Kaua i I’d already done. Our chopper felt like a toy compared to the immense, towering ridges. We were surrounded on all sides and it seemed the only way out was up. These narrow ridges seem to swallow the helicopter whole and then all of a sudden the pilot finds the gap.

What Photography Gear do I use?

Do you want to know about the cameras, lenses, and different gear I use to capture my adventures? I’ve listed my four different cameras below but you can check out all my lenses, accessories, and favorite camera backpack in my article: MY PHOTOGRAPHY GEAR: WHAT’S IN MY BACKPACK

  • My Main Camera: Sony A7riii
  • My Drone : DJI Mavic Air2S
  • My 360 Camera: Insta360 X3
  • Action Camera : GoPro Hero 12

The gap he came out of gave us our first look at the Na Pali coast. What a damn sight. My dreams were immediately right there before me. The scene I had imagined a million times, right there before me. Sharply cut ridges beaming golden under the sun while the Pacific Ocean stung me with its trademark, deep vibrant blue.

Our pilot spent almost 20 minutes making passes up and down the coast making sure both sides of our doors off the helicopter had good looks at the coast. He even set us up for some classic ‘feet shots’ over ‘Cathedrals’. I was happy just to take it all in but I had one shot in mind. It’s the type of shot you click and then check your camera to make sure it’s real life. The lighting wasn’t perfect but for me, this shot is a perfect moment in my life.

After the Napali Coast, we cruised back past Ke’e Beach and got lost in the land of a million waterfalls. Honestly, when I described the flight to people the next day, I told them we saw 200 waterfalls and that was probably an under-exaggeration.

When our doors off helicopter tour of Kauai, Hawaii steered back into Lihue Airport, I was lost for words. I felt overwhelmed. There was far too much epicness in an hour for one mind to handle. I don’t think there are many better places to do a doors-off helicopter tour. It’s just so diverse. Hundreds of waterfalls, one of if not the best coastline in the world, canyons, and ridges that seemingly engulf you… all within an hour.

Kauai open-door helicopter Tour Prices

Doors off helicopter tours aren’t offered by all companies and make the trip so much better. The prices range from $250-$400 per person.

Helicopter Flight:  The most popular helicopter tour on Kauai is the Kauai Island Highlight Helicopter Tour .

Best time for a doors-off helicopter tour on Kauai

The best time of year for the tour is in the summer. You are more likely to avoid the storms, which can often delay or cancel flights. In the winter the weather wreaks havoc on Kauai and storms pass through very quickly. I did my flight in winter so it is definitely possible to have a great sunny flight.

The best time of day for a doors-off helicopter tour of Kauai is either sunset, sunrise, or the early afternoon. The lighting on the Na Pali coast is really tricky. The light can be very harsh and there are so many shadows and ridges to think about. I found that obviously the soft lighting of sunrise and sunset are great but 1 pm was beautiful! I did my tour just before sunset and am pretty stoked with the lighting we had as we cruised along the Na Pali coastline! If you are deciding whether to do your doors off helicopter tour of Kauai in the morning or afternoon you will be solid either way for lighting just check the weather!

I hope you get the opportunity to get yourself inside a chopper, preferably with the doors off for that full experience of Kauai.

“Our pilot was the best!! We did the Grand Skies Tour and it was worth every penny! The ride was so smooth and the music was great! I’d highly recommend this being the number one activity on the island.”

Christine L

“We were not going to do the helicopter tour as we had done one on another island before. Then we read that visiting Kauai and not taking the heli was like visiting the Sistine Chapel and not looking up. They were right. Thanks to the Island gang for this awesome experience!!”

View Bali Hai, also known as the Makana Mountain, which starts at the beginning of the Na Pali Coast on the north shore of Kauai. Soar over Manawaiopuna Falls, one of the Garden Isle’s most famous waterfalls . Best known from the opening of the 1993 blockbuster film, Jurassic Park. Watch from above as the water rushes over a 380-foot tall cliff surrounded by walls of deep green lush flora. Located within Hanapēpē Valley on the west side of the island, it is a site few can say they have seen while on Kauai.

Continue on over to Hanalei Bay which covers nearly two miles of beach and is backed by 4000ft tall emerald mountains: Hihimanu is on the east, Namolokama is in the middle with its square top, and the triangular shaped Mamalahoa is to the west. Often cloaked with a mist of clouds the Mt. Waialeale ridge home to dozens of cascading waterfalls.

The name Waialeale, meaning “rippling water or overflowing” receives over 400 inches of rain per year and is known to be one of the wettest spots on earth. You’re surrounded by enchanting waterfalls and lush green walls of fauna. Waialeale Crater aka Blue Hole & The Weeping Wall. From above you will see it all and find yourself lost in the beauty and mystery of Kauai’s enchanting lure.

Other sites like the Wailua Falls and Waimea Canyon are also famous aerial sites on the Doors-Off Adventure Tour.

Short answer is “yes”. However, rest assured, prior to every flight our pilots and ground crew review the weather to make sure it is not only safe, but also conducive to a quality tour for you. We understand that this is a big expenditure, and we want to make sure you get your money’s worth. We will cancel your tour and make sure you get a full refund if there is poor visibility, or if the pilot determines the winds are unsafe.

We give a 100% refund for cancellations made 48 hours before the tour date. If there is inclement weather or unscheduled maintenance, we will either reschedule your tour or issue a 100% refund. Keep in mind that if the tour is booked with a third party, their cancellation and refund policy may differ from ours.

All guests must provide their own transportation. We recommend Taxi, Uber, or Lyft. We ask guests to allow an extra 15 minutes of travel time due to unforeseen traffic, to arrive early or on time for their check in.

The doors-off helicopter tour is extremely windy. We recommend comfortable athletic wear, no loose shirts, or dresses, or skirts. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with a heel strap. Hair should be secured in a bun or tightly braided, no loose ponytails or braids. Temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler and we recommend a windbreaker or a jacket to protect against the wind chill.

All of the tour times we offer are great times to view the island. Time is personal preference whether you like to be an early bird and do activities first thing in the morning, or take your time and do a later tour midday or afternoon.

You may reschedule or cancel your tour for a full refund if done 48 hours prior to the tour date and time. It should be noted that it does rain almost every day in Hawaii. Most of the time it is in very small areas at a time, which does not affect our tours. So we do not recommend cancelling or rescheduling based on a forecast of rain.

Front Seat upgrades are the two seats in the front with the pilot. Selecting these seats guarantees the seating assignment if the two passengers’ body weights combined do not exceed the 345 pounds weight limit. The front seats are sold only as a pair together, whether it is for one or two people. The open seating is any seat in the helicopter. Open class seating is assigned by body weights. For solo passengers, we try our best to accommodate a seat next to the open door. For couples, we seat you two together in the same row. For a party of three, we either seat two passengers in the front and the third passenger in the rear seat, or vice versa depending on the weights. For a party of four passengers, we will seat accordingly by each body weight, typically the two body weights that are the lightest combined at, or under, 345 pounds will be seated in the front. For any seating, you may add a request upon booking. We do not guarantee seating nor assign seating until the day of the tour. Premium Plus seatings are for any guests that weigh 240lbs/109kg or more. An additional seat is blocked and reserved to ensure the combined passenger weight does not exceed the aircraft limitation of 745lbs/339kg.

Because this is a doors-off helicopter tour operation we must take extra steps — in accordance with FAA regulations — to make sure nothing flies out of the helicopter in flight. A phone flying out the door could hurt someone on the ground, or even damage the helicopter if it hits the spinning rotors. Requiring a tether for your phone allows you to enjoy the tour without having to worry about it slipping out of your hands and being lost forever. If you do not have a phone tether, one will be available for your use.

The minimum age requirement is 10 years old. A responsible adult must be seated next to any child. No lap children are allowed, and each person is required to wear a seat belt.

808-651-0619 or use our Contact Form

Weight Restrictions: Front Seats are sold as a pair only, with a maximum combined weight limit of 340lbs/154kg. Guests weighing more than 240lbs./109kg and parties of two (2) with a combined weight of more than 400lbs./182kg, must reserve (1) one additional seat at the regular price. Private Tour 4 guest maximum weight limit is 745lbs/338kg.

Age Restrictions: Minimum age 10 years.

On this incredible helicopter tour of Kauai, you’ll experience views so beautiful they will take your breath away. Explore the stunning Manawaiopuna Falls, also known as “Jurassic Park” falls, wedged in between the emerald green mountaintop of the Hanapepe Valley. Then, Kauai’s magical North Shore reveals the sculpted green valleys and 3,000-foot sea cliffs of the Na Pali Coast, the pristine turquoise-blue waters of Hanalei Bay and the Princeville Resort area.

Lastly, weather permitting, your pilot will fly you to Mt Wai’ale’ale, a dormant shield volcano with over 450 inches of rainfall each year, making it the second wettest places on earth. best time helicopter tour kauai

The most wonderful ride ever over the island of Kauai from the lava terrace to all the lush green mountains and many waterfalls and to the beautiful turquoise blue ocean . From the time I booked the flight and check in it was easy along with the review and guideline video before the flight. Everyone was so nice. I do not like flying especially in a helicopter. A friend with the same issue recommended Blue Hawaiian stating their flight was so smooth and ours was. The pilot Mark was a kick with his knowledge and expertise in flying the helicopter. At no time did I feel anxious it was all so beautiful to think about any fears. I highly recommend those Blue Hawaiian in Kauai.

Kauai Helicopter Tour: Things to Know

What is the best time of day for a kauai helicopter tour.

Weather is unpredictable, so all you can do is go based on past experience, and keep your fingers crossed for optimal conditions when you fly.

Usually, mornings offer the best flying conditions in Kauai. There’s generally less turbulence and the skies tend to be clearer for better visibility. Clouds usually tend to roll in come afternoon.

However, if you are keen on the best lighting for the Na Pali Coast , you’ll generally find that in the afternoons, when the sun shines on the cliffs, making the colors stand out more. In the mornings, the sun is behind the cliffs, leaving them in shadows.

A few other places, like the Manawaiopuna Falls , also are in the shadows in the morning.

Afternoon flights are more likely to get canceled due to weather, although that could happen in the morning as well.

For all but the most exacting of photographers, morning flights are perfectly fine for capturing great photos and video.

We chose a morning flight for our Kauai helicopter tour, and have no regrets at all.

>> Book these 5-star rated, highly popular, Kauai tours now!

What is the best time of year for a Kauai helicopter tour?

Winter is rainy season in Kauai, and between the months of November and April, rain and storms are much more likely.

That means, in the winter, helicopter tours are much more likely to be canceled due to weather.

If possible, plan to do your Kauai helicopter tour in the summer: June through August, for the best weather and visibility. The shoulder months can go either way when it comes to weather.

No matter when you visit, book your helicopter tour for very early in your trip, so if your tour gets canceled for some reason, you still have the opportunity to reschedule for another day during your trip.

>> Book these 5 star rated, highly popular, Kauai Tours now!

Should I choose a doors-on tour or a doors-off tour?

That depends entirely on your personal preference.

If you want photos with no intervening glass, a door-off helicopter tour gives you the opportunity to look straight down at the scenery with no glass in between.

Note that there are age restrictions for a doors off flight: you have to be over 10 on most such flights.

However, some travelers prefer to feel safely enclosed when they fly, in which case a door-on tour is the way to go.

Can I choose my seat on the helicopter?

Unless you charter the entire flight, you can’t, because the seating inside a helicopter is based on weight distribution.

If you are traveling as a couple or group of two, one of you will get a middle seat unless you pick a tour with no middle seats.

The front middle seat is actually not bad and you have an unobstructed view for the most part. The back middle seat is usually the least preferred seating option.

Flying over Ke'e Beach in Kauai, Hawaii, in a helicopter

What should I wear / bring for my Kauai helicopter flight?

Some tours do not permit flip flops, so be sure to wear proper shoes. A lightweight sweater or jacket will help you stay nice and warm.

To reduce glare from windows, dark-colored clothing is helpful on door-on tours.

Don’t bring any “stuff.” You’ll have to leave your belongings in a locker or at the tour company office before you board. And note that most helicopter tours do not permit any camera equipment.

If you use motion sickness medicine, remember to take it before you board.

How much does a Kauai helicopter tour cost?

Kauai helicopter tours are generally priced between $300 and $400 per person, so yes, it’s a splurge excursion for sure.

Given that you’re spending some serious cash on your tour, you will want to research your options carefully before you take the plunge.

Kauai helicopter tour: a complete guide and photos tips

As a traveller, do you tend to go back to places you loved, or do you travel to new destinations? Tough question, isn’t it? We usually prefer to explore new places – our planet is so big! However this time, it’s different. We came to Hawaii a few years ago but only had time to visit the main island: Oahu. And while some places are great, it didn’t really meet the high expectations we had for Hawaii. So we decided to give it another go. And we’re so happy we did! This time, we went to Maui and Kauai. Black sand beaches, sunset above the clouds, amazing banana bread, 2 days trekking in landscapes out of this world, and to finish on a high note, a helicopter tour over the Napali Coast.

If you’re reading this, then you’re looking for the last bit of information to push you over the edge (not literally of course :D) and get all the tips you need to make the most out of this once in a lifetime experience.

So why do it?

  • First flight in a helicopter? You’ll love the views as much as the experience itself. There’s nothing like a vertical take off!
  • Amazing view on hidden waterfalls and gorgeous valleys that can only be seen from the sky.
  • Get a greater sense of the island and how magical it is.
  • Kauai has some of the most spectacular views in the world, especially when it comes to the Napali Coast. We hiked 35km (22 miles) over 2 days and were wowed. But I can guarantee you that seeing it from a helicopter was even more incredible

Ok, now that you’re ready to go, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make the most of it.

1. Choosing the company and getting the best seats

Let’s be honest, a helicopter tour isn’t that cheap. That’s why it’s important to take the time to choose the best company for you. Here’s what we recommend you pay attention to.

  • Number of passengers on the flight

Some companies offer tours for 6 passengers which means that you might end up in the middle (you can’t really choose your seat as they’re assigned based on weight). And that means no direct access to the window. From there, it’s harder to get the best view or best shots. That’s at least what the Canadian couple we met on Kauai told us about one of their past experience.

The second option is a private tour. It can be a bit more expensive, however, you’re guaranteed to get the best seats with incredible views on the Napali Coast. You also have the option to ask your pilot to go over that waterfall again if you feel like you missed your perfect picture.

And certain companies require a minimum number of passengers to fly. Otherwise your flight can get cancelled at the last minute. Check their policy. On a private tour, flights only get cancelled because of bad weather.

  • Doors on or off?

It’s really up to you but here’s why we recommend the doors-off option:

  • It feels more adventurous. As soon as the helicopter takes off, you’ll feel right in the heart of the action. Seeing the ground a few hundred feets below and feeling the air on your face will make the experience unforgettable.
  • Less chances of getting sick. . Most people will be fine, but if you are subject to motion sickness, the air flowing will help.
  • Best option for photography . Without the doors, you’ll have less issues with reflection and distortion, plus you’ll get better contrasts. If you like photography and want to bring the best pics back home, leave the doors at the airport.   If you decide to fly with the doors off, you’ll need a strap on every object that you bring onboard (including your mobile phone).

Some companies offer flights especially dedicated to photographers, especially if you want to spend most of your time on a specific location. If it is the case, Mauna Loa offers a great option.

2. Clothes and getting ready for the flight

What you need to wear will depend on the season. No surprise there. But keep in mind that even if it’s hot on the ground, it’ll be colder when you’re going over 100km/h in the air. Check out the weather forecast and ask your helicopter company for advice on the day.

When we flew in May, a simple rain jacket was enough. It’s a good option as you might encounter a few showers, especially around Mount Waialeale, one of the wettest spots on earth.

If you have long hair, it’s a good idea to tie or braid them.

Finally, if you decide to fly with the doors on, dress in dark colours to avoid reflections as much as possible.

3. Camera lens and settings for aerial photography

If you’re flying doors-off and want to take your phone on the flight (for your Instagram stories for example :D), make sure you buy a cover with a strap. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to change your lens in the air (for obvious security reasons), so pick your favourite lens before take-off (or keep 2 camera bodies with different lenses on each one).

Here’re a few pieces of advice to maximise your chances to take the perfect picture:

  • Go with your widest angle (we had our 17-55mm but you can go wider)
  • Leave the polarised filter behind. We’re usually big fans of those filters (better contrasts and colours), but with the helicopter’s speed, it’ll be harder to focus as you’ll lose a couple of stops.
  • Aperture : it will depend on your lens, but try to find a good compromise between depth of field and light. f/8  is probably a good starting point if you have no idea. Potentially f/6 as with the altitude, the focus point will likely be close to infinity.
  • Shutter speed is a crucial parameter for the flight. Choose it based on the light available, trying to set it as fast as possible to minimise the blur generated by the speed and the helicopter vibrations.
  • White balance : take it easy, go full auto. Except if you’re a pro photographer 😉
  • Tip : deactivate the image preview, the option that shows your pictures on the screen as you take them. It will allow you to shoot faster.
  • If your memory card speed allows, shoot in RAW. That way you’ll have more flexibility for post-production.
  • You can always change your settings while flying. So remember to check a few pictures and adjust as you go.

Of course, if you want to make the most out of your camera, it’s a good thing to know how it works. Check-out your camera’s user manual, and take the time to know the key settings before you fly. You’ll avoid getting stuck trying to change the camera settings mid-air.

If you don’t want to shoot in full manual, choose semi-auto with aperture priority. We found that it’s the easiest option for beginners.

And finally, we know you want to bring the best pictures home, but don’t keep your nose on your camera and don’t forget to enjoy the flight.

4. In the air: aerial photography tips

  • Sit behind the pilot, you’ll see what they see. Our pilot, Guy, was incredible. He made sure we had a great view on every single waterfall. Going on a private tour is definitely your best chance not to miss out on any of the action.
  • It goes fast! Once you’ve checked the first few images, shoot non stop, sort later.
  • Make sure you have enough battery and enough space on your memory card.  FYI, Rafika took about 16GB of photos during our 60-minute flight!
  • Also, for more creative shots, you can take pictures of the inside of the helicopter. Capture the controls, the pilot, the front window…
We ended our trip in Kauai with an helicopter tour. 🔹We flew over so many incredible landscapes and so close to the beautiful Napali Coast 😱 🔹Before choosing a tour we compared many of them and decided to go with Mauno Loa Helicopter tour for an amazing doors off experience. And we definitely were not disappointed. 🔹We took a lot of pics. Will sort them and show you our favourite places 💚 . . . . . #letsgetlost #letsgoeverywhere #natgeolandscape #simplyadventure #travelinspiration #travelphotos #lpfanphoto #iamtb #discoverlandscape #tourdumonde #mysomewhere #enjoyingtheview #fromwhereyoudratherbe #travel2next #traveladdicts #beautifulmatters #monthoflei #makemoments #thathiddengem #voyageursdumonde #getlostnow #natgeoyourshot #mybestintravel #theglobewanderer #lethawaiihappen #hawaiilife #discoverkauai #MLHPhotoMission #napalicoast #viewfromabove A post shared by Travel & Wildlife Photography (@lebigtrip) on May 21, 2017 at 2:27pm PDT

Again, you don’t do this everyday (well… most of us don’t), so don’t forget to have fun :D.

5. Best time to fly

We struggled finding that kind of information online when we were preparing our trip. It’s true that it depends on many parameters: season, weather on the day, and also… on your luck.

What you need to know if that the light varies based on the time of the day (thanks genius!). And there are advantages and inconvenients for both options. Therefore, the best time for you depends on what you’re most interested in. Let me explain.

  • Morning : at this time, the weather is usually calmer, meaning less turbulences. It might be the right option for you if you’re prone to motion sickness. The canyon is usually clear of clouds at this time.
  • End of the day : the light is beautiful on the Napali Coast, however, some parts of the canyon as well as some waterfalls will be hidden in the shade. You also increase your chances for bad weather then.
  • In between : the sun is high in the sky, so visibility is usually pretty good. But, there’s less shade (not ideal for photography), so the landscape can sometimes feel a bit flat.

We flew at 1.30pm, and we loved it! The light was starting to give depth to the cliffs, and the canyon was still clear and bright. We definitely recommend flying early in the afternoon .

6. Photo processing

When you’re back home, it’s time to sort and filter your photos (not our favourite part of the trip). We use Lightroom for our photo processing, but any software will do the trick.

Here are some very simple improvements we usually do on our photos:

  • Select the pics without the helicopter blades (except if it adds something to the picture)
  • Crop as necessary – it’s not always easy to get the right angle up in the air.
  • Increase the contrast. The mist tends to soften it.
  • Modify the exposure if you feel like it’s needed.

7. When you’re done…

Don’t forget to come back here to say hi and tell us how you went 🙂 Also, feel free to leave any of your tips in the comments below.

We chose to finish our trip in Kauai with the helicopter tour. From up there, we could see all the places we went to the days before. It was an amazing ending.

But… it was also a bit risky. It is not unusual for companies to reschedule flights due to bad weather. That’s another reason why we chose to go with Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours: if the weather’s not great, and they think that you won’t have a good time, they will reschedule your flight and that… even if technically they are able to fly.

Some of you might be worried about safety. If it’s the case, you can check safety records on the National Transportation Safety Board site .  You’ll get info on the issues that were logged as well as companies involved. Quick reminder: there’s more chances of getting into an accident driving to the airport than flying 😛  We also wanted you to know that we felt very safe and watched a safety procedure video before the tour. You can also decide to fly with the doors on with Mauna Loa if you’re worried.

Kauai Helicopter Tour Reviews

1. kauai island highlights helicopter tour.

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Departure: 3225 Akahi St, Lihue
  • Departure Time: 11:00 AM, 1:00 M
  • Includes:   Pilot and guide, h elicopter tour

If you know anything about Hawaii, you’ll know that its natural beauty is endless. While hiking, ziplining, and boat rides are certainly great ways to see it all, helicopters are still king in that regard.

The Kauai Island Highlights Helicopter Tour is one of the best around, offering views that look like something from a dream! Lasting just an hour, you’ll cover a ton of ground (and water), yet still be able to work the tour into a busy schedule without issue.

With a maximum group size of just 6 participants, it’s perfect for couples, families, friends or even solo travelers! Upon arrival to the tour headquarters, you’ll be greeted by your professional pilot/guide who will give a safety briefing and all equipment necessary.

Hop onto your helicopter, put on your headphones and take off over the breathtaking Hawaiian wilderness.

One of the first iconic locations you’ll pass by are the thundering Jurassic Falls, which were actually featured in the Jurassic Park movie! Next, soar over the red hills and valleys that mark the Waimea Canyon, and then the Na Pali Coast.

As you pass over each location, your guide/pilot will make sure to tell you all information about them so you know just how significant each one is.

You’ll have the perfect view for snapping pics and videos and showing them to those who didn’t take the tour! We really enjoyed this tour, complete with music that was perfect for accompanying this gorgeous island. Educational, entertaining, and definitely beautiful!

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, other experiences you may enjoy:, 2. “private” kauai helicopter tours with “no middle seats”.

  • Duration: 1 hour 15 mins
  • Departure: 3745 Ahukini Rd, Lihue
  • Departure Time: Between 7:30 AM – 4:45 PM
  • Includes:  Lanyards for cell phones, 10 minute pilot safety briefing

If you’re looking for some of the most incredible views in Hawaii, look no further. One of the complaints people have about helicopter tours is that they may get stuck in a middle seat without much access to the windows.

That’s not a problem with the Private Kauai Helicopter Tours with No Middle Seats ! Everyone gets their perfect window view here for a full hour and 15 minutes with no disappointment to speak of.

Well, not a window really as you can fly with the door off which means no window glare or obstructing the scenery! The tour guide/pilot is always professional and knows the area like the back of their hand.

Not to mention, they’re highly trained and offer a 10-minute safety briefing beforehand to ensure everyone stays safe and comfortable.

We thought it was really thoughtful of the company to provide lanyards for everyone’s cell phones before takeoff as well, just to make sure no incidents happen.

Set off and soar over Manawaiopuna Falls, aka “Jurassic Park Falls”. The 400-foot giants sit in the middle of a wooded valley in a way that the falls are only visible by helicopter!

You’ll also get to see the Olokele Canyon, Waimea Canyon, Na Pali Coast, North Shore, Wai’ale’ale crater, and so much more. As you cruise around, your pilot will offer an interesting educational commentary telling you fascinating stories about each location.

They’ll not only give you a top-notch narration of the island, but offer an interactive adventure where you can ask all the questions you want.

3. Kauai Waimea Canyon, Jurassic Falls, & More Helicopter Tour

  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Departure Time: 8:00 AM, 9:30 AM, 2:00 PM, 3:30 PM
  • Includes:  Helicopter tour, p ilot, land at the movie-famous Jurassic Park Falls

Have you ever wondered where so many movies film these insanely beautiful scenes? The answer for many of those (most notably, Jurassic Park) Blockbuster films is Kauai!

With the Kauai: Waimea Canyon, Jurassic Falls, & More Helicopter Tour you’ll be able to see and learn firsthand about how they chose the locations, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and more.

This 1.5-hour tour will take you all over the island to enjoy that unmatched beauty very few are able to witness. You’ll see why so many Hollywood directors have tried to capture or even replicate the area, but that it’s never really as incredible as in real life.

Once you arrive on site, you’ll meet with your pilot who will be there to make sure everyone is safe and has on proper equipment. You’ll start with one of the most famous attractions of the bunch: the Manawaiopuna Falls, colloquially known as “Jurassic Park Falls”.

This is due to its feature in the hit movie, as you may recall. Next, check out Olokele Canyon known for its endangered plants, Waimea Canyon with its jagged cliffs, and the Na Pali Coast with its lush green scenery covered by a light fog.

The bird’s eye views of these rich jungles, green contrasting with the red canyons, intensely blue seas, and more is out of this world. It really is hard to believe that what you’re witnessing is real life. After all, 80% of what you’re witnessing isn’t even accessible by car!

If it does sound interesting to you, we recommend booking soon as these tours sell out for months in advance!

4. Amazing Air Kauai Helicopter Tour

  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Departure: 3651 Ahukini Rd, Lihue
  • Departure Time:  Between 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Includes:  Helicopter tour, p ilot

Are you searching for an unforgettable experience to share with your loved ones? Perhaps you’d like to really get out into the Hawaiian wilderness where there’s not a person to speak of aside from others in your party?

If that sounds like a good time to you, check out the Amazing Air Kauai Helicopter Tour that will take you on the ride of your life!

If you’ve never been on a helicopter before, we can tell you that it’s a load of fun! However, you don’t have to be an adrenaline junkie to enjoy this excursion. Photographers and movie directors are notorious for trying to capture Hawaii’s beauty with these arial perspectives.

It’s difficult to really appreciate Hawaii’s diverse landscapes in under an hour without the help of a helicopter. You’ll be in the hands of an expert pilot who knows how to navigate with precision and keep everyone safe.

As you cruise along the Garden Isle, they’ll tell you all about the different locations as well as interesting stories and anecdotes.

Feel free to take photos and videos as you pass over the Waimea Canyon State Park, Na Pali Coast State Park, and Jurassic Park Falls.

Waimea Canyon is known for its dry and jagged landscape which contrasts quite dramatically against the surrounding green landscape the state is more recognized for.

Seeing the bright blue ocean, streams, and waterfalls jetting off of steep cliffs is a sight for sore eyes, too! Overall, this is an experience that can’t be missed! From the scenery, to the smooth ride, to the staff – everything is impeccable.

5. Kauai ECO Adventure Helicopter Tour

  • Duration: 50 minutes
  • Departure:  Lihue Airport, 3730 Ahukini Rd #8, Lihue
  • Departure Time: Between 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Includes:  Bose Aviation-grade, electronic noise-cancelling headsets, use of microphones with 2-way communication with pilot, State of Hawaii Certified Tour Guides

While it’s important everywhere, Hawaii definitely seems to be more aware of humans’ effects on nature. This means that a lot of their tours have become more eco-friendly to keep nature and animals healthy and unharmed.

The Kauai ECO Adventure Helicopter Tour is one that falls into that category, making it that much more pleasant! This 50-minute adventure is super easy to fit into a busy schedule, as there are so many start times available throughout the day.

If you’re looking for a high-quality, professional-grade experience this one is one of the top-rated. Every pilot/guide is certified by the state of Hawaii, and their professionalism is apparent in every aspect.

You’ll be able to use Bose aviation-grade, noise-cancelling headsets so you can perfectly hear your pilot’s captivating commentary on every location you pass by. They also have microphones with 2-way communication enabled so you can speak to your pilot and ask them questions, too.

They always do their best to entertain and accommodate, and that was half of why we were so impressed by this tour.

Seeing Hawaii in any capacity is always a pleasure, but seeing it from up above is really taking things to new heights. The Manawaiopuna Falls, for example, is really only accessible by helicopter. You can see how it’s perfectly wedged between the deep green Hanapepe Valley and stands hundreds of feet tall!

The Na Pali Coast is just magical, with 3,000-foot sea cliffs which tower high above the magnificent, turquoise Hanalei Bay. Waimea Canyon is known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” but also boasts dozens of stunning waterfalls.

If the weather allows for it, you’ll be able to see the dormant shield volcano of Mt. Wai’ale’ale which is the second wettest place on earth!

Your Guide to Vacationing in Kauai

Getting around in kauai, staying safe in kauai, communicating in kauai, what to pack when vacationing in kauai, interesting facts about kauai, get ready to have fun in kauai.

When planning any vacation, it is important to know the details about where you are going so that you are well-prepared. Figuring things out last minute, or when you actually arrive, can mean disaster for your trip and that’s the last thing you need. Here is some valuable information about Kauai that may make planning your vacation easier.

If you plan on seeing more of the island than just the immediate area around the resort you are staying at and a few select tours or attractions, you may want to plan on renting a vehicle. However, if your hotel or resort is centrally located around an area with a lot of the attractions you wish to visit, you will probably want to save the money on the rental car and just use a taxi or even rent a scooter or other cheaper methods of travel.

Kauai has relatively low crime rates and is generally considered a safe place to travel. However, as with any tourist destination, you always want to take precautions when traveling to protect yourself. It’s important not to show off flashy jewelry or expensive cameras. Always have your identification on you in case you are injured or sick and need to get medical help. And always keep your wits about you – don’t drink too much so you can keep your bearings at all times.

Because Kauai is an island, there are a lot of beaches to swim and many Na Pali boat tours. Don’t swim on secluded beaches unless you are familiar with the tides. When swimming at popular beaches, always be aware of lifeguards and obey their rules and instructions. When on Kauai snorkel tours, your captain and crew will brief you with safety instructions and it is important to follow these at all times.

Traveling in the time of Covid

Like many other destinations worldwide, tours and visitor attractions in Kauai have adopted special procedures.

Wearing a mask in mandatory in many locations. You will be expected to supply your own mask and wear it when you enter public buildings.

Keep your distance from other visitors who are not in your family group or bubble. You will be expected to keep your distance inside minibuses and other vehicles and when seated in restaurants.

At the time of writing, the State of Hawaii welcomes visitors but requires pre-travel testing for Covid-19. You can obtain the most up-to-date information directly from the State of Hawaii Portal .

Eco-Tourism and Sustainability in Kauai

The Hawaiian Archipelago offers many areas of outstanding natural beauty and protected wildlife areas you can explore. In order to maintain this wonderful place for future generations, many of the local tour companies operate eco-friendly tours.

When considering the tours we review on the World Travel Guides website, note that there are often eco-friendly options that empower you to become a more sustainable traveler. This is especially true around the islands of Hawaii. Take care of our world and it will take care of our children.

English is the official language of Hawaii. However, Hawaii is home to many cultures and you will probably run into both locals and tourists that speak many other languages. Pidgin English is the local language of Kauai. You can also hear Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, and Portuguese. Native Hawaiians appreciate Hawaiian words and locations being pronounced correctly so if you don’t know how to say something, it is best to ask. A local guide can help you as well.

The atmosphere is very casual in Kauai. You can wear shorts even when dining at a restaurant but if you are wearing a swimsuit, be sure to wear a coverup or shirt over it. Many people wear slippers even to dine out at a restaurant as it is part of the customary “dress code” of the island; however, some places may require close toed shoes. If you are coming from one of the many Kauai snorkel tours, you will want to make sure you are covered up appropriately with an Aloha shirt or cover up as well as dry shorts and slippers or shoes.

The highest point on the Kauai island is Kawaikini Peak and the whole island is only 552 square miles. This makes it a relatively small island. Its state bird is the Nene and the “island color” is purple. The state flower that represents Kauai is the Mokihana which can be found abundantly in the tropical forests that cover most of the island.

Kauai is one of those places that must be seen and experienced to really appreciate. Its beauty is unique and cannot be surpassed except by other Hawaii locations which offer similar beauty but always different. You cannot see the stunning cliffs or unique tropical forests unique to this island anywhere else.

So, pack your bags and get ready to enjoy a whole new world at your resort, on beautiful beaches, and of course, on your Kauai snorkel tours!

The Magic of Kauai from Above

Imagine yourself soaring over Kauai’s emerald valleys and sharp mountain ridges, the scenery unfolding beneath you like a vibrant tapestry. Helicopter tours in Kauai offer you a unique perspective that even the most stunning photographs fail to capture fully.

Your journey above Kauai might begin over the renowned Hanapepe Valley, known for its deep green hues and historic relevance. You’ll marvel at the Manawaiopuna Falls, also known as “Jurassic Park” falls, which became an icon after the famous movie. Keep your camera ready; these waterfalls are a sight you’ll want to freeze in time.

Next, you could glide towards the imposing Waimea Canyon, often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” The play of light and shadow over the red and brown geological formations creates a spectacle that is constantly changing with the path of the sun.

  • Breathtaking coastlines greet you as you approach the Na Pali Coast. This stretch is inaccessible by car, making your aerial view all the more exclusive.
  • Witness the sheer cliffs and hidden beaches, scenes that have served as the backdrop for countless films and postcards.

As you continue, your pilot, who doubles as your guide, will share insights about the island’s past, including the legends that shape Kauai’s cultural heritage. You’ll hover over the crater of Mount Waialeale , one of the rainiest spots on earth, where waterfalls cascade down almost 3,000 feet to the heart of the island.

Helicopter tours can also offer glimpses of Kauai’s wildlife. From your vantage point, you might spot a pod of dolphins in the surf or migrating humpback whales in the winter months. The unique ecological zones of Kauai, ranging from arid deserts to lush rainforests, are home to a variety of wildlife species that contribute to the island’s allure.

Each moment in the sky reveals another secret of Kauai, an island shaped by volcanic forces and sculpted by the elements. Your experience on a Kauai helicopter tour isn’t just a sightseeing trip; it’s a deep immersion into the heart of the Hawaiian archipelago.

Choosing the Right Helicopter Tour for You

Finding the perfect helicopter tour that suits your needs is crucial. You’ve come to Kauai to be mesmerized by its beauty, and the tour you select should align with what you’re looking to experience. Here are a few pointers to guide you through the decision-making process.

First and foremost, consider the duration of the tour. Do you want a quick overview of the island or an extended adventure ? Tours typically range from 30 minutes to over an hour , with longer flights providing more in-depth exploration of Kauai’s hidden gems.

Also take into account the type of helicopter used. Some tours operate with doors on, which can be comforting if you’re apprehensive about heights, while others offer doors-off experiences for an unobstructed view . The choice is yours—do you prefer safety and comfort or the thrill of the open air?

Consider the following points when selecting a tour:

  • Safety record of the tour company
  • Pilot experience and knowledge
  • Group size and seating arrangements
  • Special accommodations such as assistance for disabilities

Review the landmarks each tour emphasizes. If you’ve been fascinated by stories of the legendary Manawaiopuna Falls, a tour focusing on that area might be ideal for you. Maybe you’re a photographer looking for the perfect lighting conditions —then you’ll want to inquire about the time of day the tours depart.

Here’s a quick reference for typical tour durations and what they may include:

Don’t forget that weather in Kauai can shift rapidly. Check cancellation and rescheduling policies so you’re not caught off guard. You’re here for an experience of a lifetime, and choosing the right tour is part of ensuring that everything is as magical as you imagined.

Engage in conversations with tour providers, read reviews, and trust your instinct. Remember, the goal is to find the tour that resonates with your expectations and leaves you with memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Majestic Waterfalls: A Helicopter Tour Highlight

When you’re soaring above Kauai, one of the most breathtaking sights you’ll encounter is the island’s waterfalls. Cascading from unimaginable heights, these natural wonders are truly a highlight of any helicopter tour.

Manawaiopuna Falls , also known as “Jurassic Falls,” is a superstar among Kauai’s cascades, famed for its appearance in the movie “Jurassic Park.” Surrounded by rich greenery, it plummets 400 feet and isn’t easily accessible by land, making your flyover experience especially exclusive. You’ll marvel at the sheer volume of water thundering down into the tranquil pool below.

Next, the 800-foot Waipo’o Falls in Waimea Canyon stunningly showcases the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” The helicopter offers a unique viewpoint to appreciate the two-tiered falls, a sight often hidden when exploring the canyon by foot.

Here are a few tips to maximize your waterfall viewing experience:

  • Book Morning Flights : The lighting is better for photographs, and there’s less chance of rainfall.
  • Wear Dark Clothing : This reduces glare on the helicopter’s windows.
  • Ask About Doors-Off Tours : If you’re feeling adventurous, doors-off flights provide unobstructed views and thrilling photo opportunities.

If you’re captivated by these colossal curtains of water, ensure that the tour you select includes ample time hovering near these natural marvels. Watching the sunlight dance off the spray from the comfort of your seat above, you’ll understand why Kauai is often referred to as the Garden Isle . The pilot’s commentary often includes not just the geology and history surrounding these falls but also local legends that bring the experience to life.

As you glide gracefully back towards the coastline, the waterfalls seem to stay with you, a living memory of Kauai’s dynamic landscape that continues to evolve over millions of years. Each look at the falls, every drop of water, tells a story of Kauai’s natural majesty, one that’s been shared for generations.

Exploring the Na Pali Coast by Air

Once you’ve soared over the majestic waterfalls and marveled at the deep canyons, your helicopter tour will take you to the western edge of Kauai, revealing the breathtaking Na Pali Coast. This 17-mile stretch of coastline is inaccessible by car and is one of the most sought-after sights in Hawaii. The rugged cliffs, or ‘pali’, tower above the Pacific Ocean, creating a dramatic and untouched landscape that’ll make your heart skip a beat.

As your pilot navigates along the coast, you’ll be treated to views of secluded beaches and towering sea cliffs that rise as high as 4,000 feet. Each turn and swoop of the helicopter provides a new perspective – one minute you’re gazing at a hidden beach, and the next you’re facing a sheer cliff dripping with verdant vegetation. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in the water below or even the occasional humpback whale during the winter months.

To truly maximize your aerial adventure, here are a few tips:

  • Plan your trip between April and October , when the weather is typically clearer and the ocean calmer.
  • Choose a morning flight to enjoy the calmest air and the best light for photography.
  • Book a seat with unobstructed views , if possible, and always bring your camera. This is one spectacle you’ll want to remember forever.

Pilots often share stories and legends of the ancient Hawaiian civilizations that once inhabited these valleys. Flying over the Na Pali Coast isn’t just a visual experience – it’s a journey through time, where each ridge and valley tells the story of its people. Be prepared for an emotional response as the beauty of this incredible place connects with you on a deep level. There’s something spiritual about seeing the Na Pali Coast from the air – it’s as if you can feel the mana, the spiritual energy of the land, enveloping you.

Wildlife and Conservation Efforts

In addition to the Na Pali Coast’s physical majesty, the area also serves as a critical habitat for various wildlife species. During your flight, look out for:

  • Indigenous birds like the ‘Iwa or Great Frigatebird, often seen soaring above the cliffs.
  • Marine life including spinner dolphins and, during migration season, humpback whales.

Unforgettable Experiences: Kauai’s Hidden Gems

Embarking on a helicopter tour in Kauai not only reveals the island’s immense beauty but also allows you to uncover its hidden gems. From the comfort of your seat in the sky, you’ll spot locations few have the chance to explore on foot.

The Jurassic Park Falls , officially known as Manawaiopuna Falls , is a quintessential hidden gem. Tucked away in the dense rainforest, this cascading wonder was once accessible only to filmmakers and now, to avid adventurers like you via helicopter.

Venturing further, the Forbidden Island of Niihau emerges on the horizon. This private island harbors a mysterious allure, being off-limits to tourists. From above, witness the pristine nature of a place that’s held onto its traditional Hawaiian way of life.

Mid-flight, you might soar over Holoholoku Heiau , an ancient Hawaiian temple that’s not typically included in standard tourist itineraries. As your pilot narrates its historical significance, you’ll gain a deepened appreciation for Hawaii’s ancestral roots.

To add to your aerial adventure, timing your flight during whale watching season affords you a thrilling spectacle of humpback whales breaching the ocean’s surface. This seasonal event takes place from December through May and is a sight you’ll cherish long after your vacation ends.

As you glide above Kauai’s exclusive beaches , such as the secluded Kipu Kai , accessible only by water or air, you’ll realize the exclusivity of your vantage point. These untouched sands present a serene break from the more frequented shores and offer a moment of tranquility.

To book these pinnacle experiences, it’s recommended to reserve your flight as early as possible. High demand for these unique tours means they often fill up quickly, leaving little room for last-minute plans. Remember, in Kauai, every moment aloft is an opportunity for discovery. Make sure you’ve got your camera ready; you won’t want to miss a second of the panoramic splendor that awaits.

With these breathtaking sights, you’ll understand why the helicopter tour isn’t just a mere excursion; it’s a gateway to the heart of Kauai. After all, the island isn’t just a destination; it’s a mosaic of vibrant experiences that etch themselves into your memory.

So there you have it—your ticket to the sky awaits for a journey that’ll etch Kauai’s grandeur in your memory forever. With your pilot as your guide through time and nature’s masterpieces, you’ll uncover the island’s secrets from the best seat in the house. Remember to book early to secure that coveted window seat and set your sights on a morning flight for those perfect views. Ready for an adventure that’s as breathtaking as the Na Pali Coast itself? It’s time to take to the skies and let Kauai reveal its wonders to you.

In fact, some of the most iconic landmarks of the Garden Island are only visible from the water… or the air.

There are many helicopter tour companies set up on the island, ready to show you around the side of Kauai that you will not be able to experience any other way.

What is it like to take a helicopter tour of Kauai?

Do you remember that iconic moment in the original  Jurassic Park  movie  when they are approaching the island in a helicopter, and the dramatic theme music plays as they fly along the prehistoric-looking coast?

That’s exactly what it feels like during helicopter tours of Kauai.

Because that is exactly what you are doing!

That scene from Jurassic Park was actually filmed on the approach to the Na Pali coast, on Kauai’s North Shore, which is one of the two main reasons to take Kauai helicopter tours.

Na Pali is only viewable  by boat  or by Kauai helicopter rides, and if you want the most epic view of the landscape, a helicopter is the way to go.

The other reason to take a helicopter tour? Waimea Canyon. The “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

It is possible to see parts of Waimea Canyon by a combination of driving and hiking, but you will only get a hint of the wonder of this ten-mile-long canyon.

But flying through the canyon, past countless waterfalls, and seeing the jungle sprawled out below you – that is how you truly come to appreciate the sheer size and grandeur of Waimea Canyon.

Taking a tour of Kauai by air is an experience that you will not forget.

What is the process for taking a Kauai helicopter tour?

First, you will want to book it ahead of time for your Kauai vacation.

Yes, there are plenty of tour operators that you can find around the cruise ship terminal in Lihue that are happy to take same-day bookings.

But you will really want to do your research ahead of time and choose a reputable operator.

We went with  Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours  for their vast experience and impeccable safety record and because they are one of the very best helicopter tours for private tours.

When you arrive, you’ll go through a safety briefing, and then you’ll head out to meet your pilot at the airfield.

They will get you all buckled up, go over any last-minute safety reminders, and then you’re off! The vertical take-off is thrilling and nerve-wracking, but within minutes you are out over the jungles of the island.

Most Mauna Loa helicopter tours are in the 45-60 minute range, although you can find longer ones.

While some of the sites that they visit may vary, you can bet that every tour is going to show you Waimea Canyon, the rugged Na Pali Coast, and  Manawaiopuna Falls .

There are even tours available that stop midway through for a picnic and photo op!

What are the types of Kauai helicopter tours available?

When you are looking to book a helicopter tour, you will have a few options. You’ll first need to choose if you want to share the helicopter with other people or book a private tour.

Shared tours usually have 6 passengers. And while this doesn’t seem like much, it is possible that you will have your view impaired by another passenger.

If you are hoping to get good photographs of this for your Kauai vacation, this is particularly worrisome.

Some of the best Kauai helicopter tours are better than others for visibility, so read about the particular helicopter for any flight you are considering booking.

You also might not get seated next to your travel partner. They balance the helicopter for weight, so you will not have any say in where you sit.

The next thing you’ll need to choose is whether or not you want doors on your helicopter.

Opting for a Kauai doors-off helicopter tour gives you the advantage of having a better view and not getting any glare on your photos. It’s windier and sometimes a bit wet!

But Kauai doors off helicopter tours give you an unparalleled view of the scenery and make you feel much closer to the landscape.

If having the doors off seems inherently scarier, remember – it is not the doors that are keeping you safe. It is your seat harness and the skills of your pilot.

It will be imperative that you do not have any loose items on you when you fly. Cameras will need to be strapped to your body.

We opted for the private, doors-off tour.

While this was a splurge for us, we figured it was probably the only time we would ever do a helicopter tour, and we wanted to do it the best way we could.

We have not regretted this decision once! The best Kauai helicopter tours are pricey either way. May as well make the most of it on this stunning Hawaiian island!

Can you bring kids on a Kauai helicopter tour?

Yes, although the age requirements will vary by the tour operator.

Some operators have a minimum age of around 7, while others will allow children of any age, including lap infants (under 2), for free. Lap infants will not have a seat belt, however.

If you are traveling with young children, you will really want to think about if they will be able to handle sitting buckled into an adult-sized harness for an hour, especially considering they might not even be able to see past other passengers.

You also might not get seated next to your child, depending on the weight distribution, although most operators will try to seat families together when possible.

When we visited, we were  traveling with a baby  and a toddler. We ended up using a  local babysitter agency  and turned it into a wonderfully memorable half-day date.

  Are Kauai helicopter tours safe?

This is undoubtedly a question that has crossed your mind if you are considering helicopter rides in Kauai.

And given a few high-profile helicopter crashes in the last few years – including one on Kauai – it is only natural to be nervous.

Of course, there is always risk in something like a helicopter flight. They are statistically more dangerous than a commercial airplane flight, although they are less dangerous than flying in a private plane.

Tour-operated helicopters are significantly safer than private helicopters, as well.

Helicopter flight has become much less risky over the past few decades, but there are occasional incidents.

Of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai has seen the highest number of helicopter crashes, although they are still incredibly rare.

Ensure that you choose a reputable tour operator that adheres to the highest level of safety standards. Expect that if there is adverse weather, your tour will be canceled.

For this reason, it is a good idea to book your helicopter flight early in your trip so that you can reschedule if needed!

We never felt unsafe during our helicopter tour. The flight was smooth, and we were impressed with our pilot’s level of experience.

Is a Kauai helicopter tour worth the money?

Without a doubt, yes!

The breathtaking scenery of the NaPali Coast and Waimea Canyon are best viewed from the air, especially a bird’s eye view!

There is no better way to experience the natural wonder of the Garden Isle than by flying above the jungle in a Kauai island helicopter.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience that you will treasure, along with incredible photos, especially if you choose a doors-off tour.

If you are coming to Kauai, I highly recommend taking a few hours out to see the beauty that this island has to offer!
