Ride the Ducks of Seattle - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Despite Seattle’s history with Ride the Ducks, tour company plans new fleet of tourist vehicles that go on land, water

John Malouf knows that Seattle may not be keen on the idea of someone launching another fleet of amphibious vehicles on its waters and roadways.

It was just six years ago that a Ride the Ducks of Seattle vehicle loaded with tourists broke an axle and crashed into a bus filled with international students, killing five people and injuring 60. Millions were paid out to victims and their families , resulting in the tour company closing and filing for bankruptcy in April of last year.

“I know your history well,” Malouf said of the crash, and the legal journey that followed.

Still, Malouf thinks this is a prime spot to launch his Seattle Splash Tours , an “amphibious adventure” scheduled to open this summer, offering 90-minute rides on land and water in Hydra-Terra vehicles built for tourism by Cool Amphibious Manufacturers International.

“This is a completely different amphibian, built for tours,” said Malouf, who has been running Alaska Amphibious Tours in Ketchikan, Alaska, for the last 20 years.

“It really comes down to safety.”

Unlike the Ducks vehicles — some of which were built in the 1940s and ’50s for use in the military, and maintained for decades — Seattle Splash Tours will use newer vehicles made with modern parts. The oldest vehicle in his fleet is 20 years old, he said, and the aluminum hull is filled with Coast Guard-approved buoyancy foam, “which is a huge advantage.”

“You can’t sink ‘em,” he said. “They are positively buoyant.”

His vehicles have “proven performance” in 16 countries, and he called them “the safest amphibious vehicles for tourism.”

His tour company has had one death in its history: In 2004, a pedestrian walked in front of a vehicle and was killed . Investigators found the company was not at fault.

Malouf has received a two-month permit from Seattle’s Department of Parks and Recreation to launch the vehicles at the Sunnyside Avenue North boat ramp, where the Ducks used to launch, and where he hopes good times will begin again.

“We feel there is a bit of a vacuum there,” Malouf said of Seattle, a city he got to know well as a harvest diver. “There is a good market there. Seattle is a great tourist destination, and it has taken a hit in the last couple of years.

“It could use a little splash and fun.”

Where the Ducks tours had a more comedic tone — “Captains” at the wheel with funny names and crazy hats, punning and playing loud music — the Splash tours will be more informative, but still a good time, he said.

“We like to have fun,” Malouf said. “I think Ride the Ducks had huge local sponsorship, and after the accident, they had a hard time getting through that.

“We’re going to stand on our own,” he continued. “We’re a different company and do things the way we like to do it. And safety is our priority, coming in.”

In February 2019, after a four-month civil trial, a King County jury awarded the victims of the crash $123 million. The jury determined that Ride the Ducks International — the Branson, Missouri-based manufacturer of the Duck amphibious vehicle — bore 67% to 70% of the responsibility for the crash; and that Ride the Ducks of Seattle was 30% to 33% at fault. Awards to each of the 40 plaintiffs ranged from $40,000 to $25 million.

After the crash, the state Utilities and Transportation Commission, which regulates commercial charter buses and tourist vehicles statewide, suspended the local company from operating its 20 tourist vehicles and also found that Ducks Seattle had 463 safety violations.

Last year, four U.S. senators introduced the Duck Boat Safety Enhancement Act, after a 2018 duck boat accident in which 17 people were killed on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri.

The bill passed the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and is expected to be considered by the full Senate this year.

If passed, the law would reinforce National Transportation Safety Board recommendations, requiring the use of life jackets and equipping all operating duck boats to be more buoyant in case of emergency flooding. The law would also require the logging of safety actions; annual safety training for crew members; and the consideration of safety recommendations in previous incident reports.

Ride the Ducks left Seattle for good last July, when the 19 remaining vehicles were put up for auction , and sold for between $5,000 and $45,000; the higher bid was for a vehicle painted with the University of Washington colors and logo.

“They exceeded the best expectations we had,” said Colin Murphy, of the James G. Murphy Company, which handled the weeklong auction. “And we didn’t have a clue what they would go for, because they aren’t really for sale on the open market.”

The vehicles were sold to mostly private owners, from Mount Vernon in Skagit County to New York, Maine and Florida.

“They landed everywhere,” Murphy said, adding the Ducks portable ticket office sold for $4,500.

Malouf has no set start date for selling tickets. But he expects a little pushback, considering what has happened here, and in other parts of the country where amphibious vehicles were involved in accidents.

“Of course, there is going to be resistance,” he said. “There are always going to be haters. But you just keep a smile on and keep on trucking.”

And floating. That, too.

Ride The Ducks Seattle Sightseeing Tour

By: Author Tim Kroeger

Posted on Published: August 3, 2015  - Last updated: April 29, 2024

Today I went on a “ Ride The Ducks Seattle ” Sightseeing Tour in Seattle. It was a different, fun way to explore a new city, and I have enjoyed it pretty much.

It is definitely one of the best things to do in Seattle .

The Ducks, originally called DUKW, are actually amphibious landing crafts used by the US army during World War II.

They were designed to transport cargo from ships at sea to the mainland. Read more about the history here .

Ride-The-Duck-Sightseeing-Tour-Seattle20150729_154420Ride-The-Duck-Tour-Seattle

The tour started at Westlake Center, from where we headed to Lake Union and crossed the Aurora Bridge, where we enjoyed a beautiful view of Mount Rainier and Lake Union.

My personal highlight was when we splashed into Lake Union, where we had a breathtaking view of Seattle ‘s skyline.

After half an hour, we were back on the mainland and continued our way, passing by the famous Space Needle and Seattle’s Waterfront.

The tour continued through the Historic District and ended again in Seattle Downtown.

Shortly Before Going Into The Water.

Riding The Ducks is a party on wheels… that floats! Our guide was cracking jokes throughout the whole tour and playing music clips.

He encouraged us to sing, dance, and wave at pedestrians. It is definitely a cool activity with a group of fun people who are into that kind of tour.

I believe tour guides can make or break a tour. I love tour guides who can entertain a crowd. Lucky you got one :)

Ah I saw these when I was in Seattle last week, but felt it might make me feel like too much of a toursit, so I didn't do it. Great to know I missed something good :)

That boat on wheels looks wicked! Never been to Seattle, but maybe it's a thing to try when I'm there.

Excellent, we have a similar one in Dublin – the Viking Splash Tours. Really great fun, everyone dresses up as a Viking and roars at bewildered passers by :)

Looks like a fine ride. We had a similar one in Toronto but it's disappeared. Maybe it sprung a leak ….

That is funny that you went and did this. I have seen them in Chicago and San Francisco but never went for a ride. Now I am thinking I will take the plunge…got to be good for a laugh.

So looking forward to riding the ducks should I make it to Seattle someday!

Your guide to Seattle

Even for its size, Seattle is easy to get around. The Metro Transit buses are an extremely reliable and convenient way to get about town. You can also use the Link Light Rail that goes from the airport to downtown and areas beyond. There's also the option of taxi cabs and rideshare services. The choice is entirely up to you.

You may have heard a little rumor about Seattle being, well, kind of rainy. Unfortunately, we can't deny this, but we can tell you when to visit to get this fabulous city at its dryest. June through September is your best bet, and these months also offer the warmest daytime temperatures, as much as 75 F or more. October sees the cold set in and the rain get more frequent, and this fairly uninspiring weather carries on through winter.

Seattle has great dining and nightlife scenes, so you'll need to pack a healthy apetite and a lot of energy. In more literal terms, though, we recommend you bring the following:

  • A good book: With its many bars, breweries and coffee shops, Seattle offers endless opportunities for sitting, reading and just chilling.
  • Team colors: Join locals at a sporting match, whether it be for the Seahawks, Mariners, Sounders, Storm or one of the other beloved Seattle teams.
  • Hiking boots: Seattle is within easy reach of many very picturesque hiking roots. And thanks to Discovery Park, you needn't leave the city to hike.

Ride the Ducks ceases operations in Seattle

by KOMO News Staff

Ride the Ducks in Seattle (KOMO Photo)

SEATTLE -- The Ride the Ducks tour company, known for its boisterous city tours on colorful amphibious boats, has stopped all operations in Seattle , effective last Friday.

"We’ve been working hard to rebuild our business over the past few years and had been making great progress, showcasing our beautiful city through our iconic tours," said spokesperson Jamie Conlan.

But the devastating crash involving one of the vehicles and a tour bus that left five people dead and nearly 60 injured in 2015 left the company with several legal issues that were "simply too much for our company to overcome," Conlan said.

The crash was caused when the duck boat's front axle broke, according to the National Transportation Safety Board . Investigators found the break was caused by improper maintenance by Ride the Ducks Seattle and improper manufacturing by its parent company, Ride the Ducks International. Ride the Ducks Seattle eventually sued its parent company .

Conlan says the company believes it will ultimately be successful in its suit, it will come too late, especially with the severe drop off in tourism from the coronavirus outbreak.

"While impact of the coronavirus certainly accelerated our decision, we were faced with a set of financial realities that were inescapable," Conlan said.

Q&A: Things to know about the deadly Seattle duck boat crash

  • Copy Link copied

SEATTLE (AP) — Federal officials are investigating a deadly crash last week between an amphibious tour vehicle and a charter bus carrying international college students in Seattle. Here are questions and answers about the collision and the National Transportation Safety Board investigation.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A so-called duck boat carrying about three dozen tourists and a charter bus with about 45 North Seattle College students and staff aboard were traveling in different directions across a bridge Thursday when witnesses say they saw the duck boat’s left tire lock up as it swerved into the bus.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DIED?

Four people were killed Thursday and a fifth —a 20-year-old woman — died Sunday at a hospital. Her name has not been released, but she was an international student attending North Seattle College.

Authorities identified the others killed as: Runje Song, 17, of China; Privando Putradanto, 18, of Indonesia; Mami Sato, 36, of Japan; and Claudia Derschmidt, 49, of Austria. All were international students heading to orientation activities.

More than 50 people were transported to area hospitals following the accident. At least 13 remained hospitalized Sunday.

WHAT HAS THE INVESTIGATION FOUND?

Authorities say it will be months before they can determine an exact cause of the accident. The duck boat’s left front axle was sheared off, though it wasn’t clear if the axle had broken before or after the collision, officials said.

The duck boat did not have an axle repair that was recommended for at least some of the amphibious vehicles in 2013, NTSB member Earl Weener said Sunday. Ride the Ducks International, which refurbished the boat in 2005, warned its customers two years ago about potential axle failure and recommended a specific repair or increased monitoring, he said.

It’s unclear if the company that owns the vehicle — Ride the Ducks of Seattle — was aware of the warning, Weener said.

Ride the Ducks of Seattle owner Brian Tracey didn’t say in a statement Sunday night whether the company knew of the warning.

“We are working to understand what happened and have completely opened our operations to NTSB investigators,” he said.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE DUCK BOATS?

The U.S. Army deployed thousands of amphibious landing craft during World War II that were known then by their military designation, DUKW. Once the war was over, they were used by civilian law enforcement agencies and also converted to sightseeing vehicles in U.S. cities. The DUKW designation was replaced with the duck boat moniker that is used by various tour companies.

The vehicle involved in the Seattle crash was an Army surplus craft built in 1945.

HAVE THERE BEEN PREVIOUS DUCK BOAT ACCIDENTS?

An amphibious vehicle sank on Lake Hamilton in Arkansas in 1999, killing 13 people in an accident the National Transportation Safety Board blamed on inadequate maintenance. Investigators determined that the vessel, built by the Army in 1944, was not designed for passenger service and, as a result, lacked the proper buoyancy to remain afloat.

In 2010, a barge hit a sightseeing duck boat on the Delaware River near Philadelphia, sinking it in water about 55 feet deep and killing two Hungarian tourists. More than 25 people were injured.

The NTSB found that the tugboat operator was distracted by his cellphone and laptop computer. Investigators also found fault with the maintenance of the duck boat and decisions by the captain to anchor in an active navigation channel.

Ride the Ducks Seattle shuts its doors for good

duck boats seattle tour

A Ride the Ducks boat on Lake Union.

SEATTLE — It’s been a staple of Seattle tourist attractions for more than 20 years. But, now Ride the Ducks Seattle has shut down operations for good.

In an abrupt move Friday, the company shut down operations, according to sources familiar with the situation.

>> RELATED: Jury reaches verdict in Ride the Ducks civil trial

It is not clear whether the permanent closure is related to the coronavirus outbreak or due to something else.

The move comes after the deadly 2015 Duck Boat crash on the Aurora Bridge that killed five and injured dozens. The Seattle Company faced multiple lawsuits over the crash, and last year was found negligent in the largest of the lawsuits involving some 40 people.

The court ruled Ride the Ducks Seattle was responsible for 33-percent of what ended up being around $115 million in damages awarded to the victims.

An official statement from the company is expected soon.

Branson duck tour with Captain Scott, Captain Mike, and Charlie was fantastic! The captains' knowledge of the area and its history, combined with Charlie's humor, made for an entertaining and informative experience. While I enjoyed the views of this tour, our group found the entire experience to be very annoying and irritating. To begin with, I purchased tickets online. This was an easy process and went smoothly. However, afterwards I received an email to sign the waivers for every ticket purchased. They were signed with ease and I figured that was the end of it. A couple of days later I received an email asking for additional signatures of waivers. Those were signed (because I thought maybe I had forgotten one.) A day later I received ANOTHER notice to sign. I had been saving all of the emails from the waivers and I knew every one of them had been signed. When I mentioned this to the woman at the ticket desk, she laughed it off and said that it happens all of the time. When it was time for the ride, we boarded with no problem. The tour guide, Luis, was incredibly loud but I figured it would get better as we went along. I was VERY wrong. His horrible guiding and lack of good information made this trip a terrible experience. He tried to make jokes but they were inappropriate and annoying at best. At one point he talked about a store that sells dinosaur poop. He went on and on for WAY too long about how to trick co-workers that you don't like and make them rub the poop on their skin. It was highly inappropriate. Several people on this tour actually had their ears plugged with their fingers to attempt to drown him out. The captain obviously knew what he was doing, but he was incredibly impersonal. He never smiled and barely spoke a word to any of the passengers. They both missed an incredible opportunity to discussed the history of the DUCK vehicles as well. That would have been cool information to know. All in all, I honestly would not recommend this tour unless there were some MAJOR changes. Don't waste your money.

Fun fun fun if you want air conditioning go to a show or a museum. If you want a land and lake tour look no further! Kids blowing the duck whistle's families anticipate the fun yet to come. We finally board the vessel and the fun began. Our guide was new but very knowledgeable. He him told us many facts about the history of Branson and Lake Taneycomo also a couple thing to do that don't cost anything but you will hafta ride to know that inside information. My wife and I were very satisfied and will recommend to our friends.

Laiken, James and Brian were excellent. Felt safe and learned a bit about the Branson area.

Photo of Gi L.

Stopped in on a whim to ride with my grandsons since the last time we rode was in 2015 and in 2026 when they were much smaller. I have been so excited to have this attraction back in Branson since I only live 35 miles away now that we have retired here. I felt very safe on these boats but then again I always felt safe in the other ones as well. I REALLY wish they would do free quackers with the ride like they did before. But good ones. The quackers they sell for 5 bucks don't even quack loud and the harder you blow the more silent they get.. One of the funnest things about the prior boats, was these crazy loud quacker things and as we were going on the ride we would all quack at everyone walking by. It was so much fun and everyone got involved. Bring the good quackers back and let's have some DUCK BOAT FUN!!!
