Wade Deacon High School celebrates second ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating

It is one of the few state schools in England that has kept this grade in successive inspections

  • 16:23, 10 FEB 2023
  • Updated 11:28, 21 FEB 2023

Here's why Wade Deacon High School could be the right choice for you

Staff and students at Wade Deacon High School in Widnes are celebrating after it was rated as 'Outstanding' in its latest full Ofsted inspection.

It’s not the first time the school has been awarded this rating - the last inspection, back in 2011, also rated the school as 'Outstanding'. With the framework and process becoming much more rigorous over the last 10 years, this new result for 2023 is even more impressive.

The whole school is extremely proud of the latest report . It is overwhelmingly positive and celebrates Wade Deacon’s wonderful staff, the school itself and of course the pupils. The brilliant achievement is down to the hard work and dedication of both the teaching staff and the students themselves, who Ofsted said were "extremely happy at this school.” They added: "they are confident that staff have their best interests at heart when making decisions about their education".

Wade Deacon High School sets the bar high for students

The result is a truly notable achievement. Under the new inspection framework, it is extremely rare for a school to be graded ‘Outstanding’ in all areas and Wade Deacon High School is one of the few state schools in England that has kept its ‘Outstanding’ grade. According to statistics from Ofsted only 17% of 370 ‘Outstanding’ schools have kept their ranking to date.

What makes Wade Deacon outstanding? Here are four key reasons, outlined by Ofsted, why the school has achieved this recognition:

1. An ambitious curriculum and quality teaching

Wade Deacon High School sets the bar high with an aspirational curriculum designed to stretch each pupil to reach their full potential. Ofsted said: “The teachers at the school have high expectations of what each pupil can and should achieve. Leaders and staff are fully committed to excellence for every pupil, regardless of their background or ability.

“Leaders have designed a rich and ambitious curriculum, which includes a suitably broad range of academic, vocational and creative subjects.

“Teachers skilfully use their strong subject knowledge to deliver the curriculum expertly well. As a result, all pupils, including pupils with SEND, develop a deep and rich body of subject knowledge. Teachers take care to build pupils’ confidence and resilience in learning.”

2. Exemplary behaviour and attitude of students

Students at the school are impeccably behaved and show a true passion for learning. Ofsted said: “Pupils at Wade Deacon High School are completely committed to the ‘Wade Deacon Way’. They talk about it with passion.

"Pupils fully live out the school’s values to respect themselves, to be the best that they can be and to believe in themselves. These behaviours are consistently evident in pupils’ respectful interactions with each other and with staff. Pupils’ behaviour around the school and in classrooms is exemplary.”

Hear more about the school and from the students themselves on the Wade Deacon YouTube channel .

3. Wide range of extra-curricular activities and personal development opportunities

The school offers an extensive extra-curricular programme aiming to appeal to all students' interests and talents.

Wade Deacon believes that an educational journey isn't just about qualifications, it's about developing interests outside the classroom to enter the world as a well-rounded, qualified, happy and healthy individual.

Activities on offer range vastly, from basketball and boxing to Eco-club, creative writing and animation and robotics.

4. Students leave prepared for the world equipped with top results

The report is overwhelmingly positive and celebrates Wade Deacon’s wonderful staff and students

Students at Wade Deacon High School achieve brilliant results too. In 2022, GCSE students achieved the school's strongest results yet. Some 66% of students achieved the ‘gold standard’ Grade 5 pass in both English and maths, 81% achieving Grade 4 or above and 21% students achieved a Grade 7 or higher in both of these subjects. It set them firmly on track to access their Post-16 education places of choice.

The average grade achieved by students across all of their exams was a Grade 5, with a number of students demonstrating exceptional achievement with 149 top-level Grade 9s achieved in all. A total of 22 students achieved a full set of results at Grade 7 to 9.

Students at Wade Deacon experience an all-round education. Ofsted noted that diversity within the school and in the wider community is celebrated at Wade Deacon, saying: ”[The students] respect the uniqueness of individual people. The personal development curriculum enables pupils to explore and debate issues with maturity.”

When considering their next steps after education, the Ofsted report mentioned that: “Pupils enjoy high-quality and impartial careers advice and guidance. This broadens their horizons beyond their local context.

“Pupils are incredibly positive and ambitious for their future careers. They benefit from a first-rate education, including an aspirational curriculum, that gives them a firm foundation for their future learning and employment.”

An exceptional achievement

Principal, Simon Corner, said of the result: "We are extremely proud to announce that the overall judgement under the new Ofsted framework is that Wade Deacon High School is an ‘Outstanding’ school.

"We are proud of the journey that the school has been on and we have worked incredibly hard to maintain our high standards and ‘A Commitment to Excellence’.

"We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all members of our school community on this significant achievement. Undoubtedly, all of this has been achieved with a significant amount of hard work from pupils, staff and governors and the support of the families and community we serve."
