Romford's longest running Santa's Grotto is back!

8th November 2017

Now over 15 years old, Romford's longest standing Santa's Grotto is once again open for Christmas.

Wednesday 8th November saw the launch featuring actors from the Queen's Theatre's Pantomine Beauty and the Beast, joining Santa and his friends to mark this occasion.

Families can embrace the spirit of Christmas and all things festive with a visit to The Grotto which is a Magical Igloo. For just £3.99, children can enjoy a meet and greet and receive a gift, and for £5.99, they can also have their photo taken with him and receive a present.

Santa's Grotto is open daily between 10am and 5pm every Monday- Saturday until 24th December and Sunday 11am-4pm ( closed for a mince pie between 1-2pm)

🎄Christmas Fun Day with Run, Santa Run Wat Tyler Country Park, SS16 4UH - 3rd December 2023 Festive Fun Day, including the festive-filled 'Run Santa, Run' - which is a choice of a 2k or 4k route, 'Doggy Dash' and more!  For the Santa Run, adults will receive a Santa suit and Children will get Reindeer Antlers. Of course we have our fantastic ice rink at Sapphire Ice & Leisure in Romford which is a great place to visit any time of the year. We have also found these festive ice rinks which pop up around the Christmas period and encourage us to get our skates on!

London's Calling!

We already have a list of t hings to do and see in London that don't cost the earth but it's a magical city to visit at Christmas so here are a few more suggestions...

Christmas Lights Oxford Street & Carnaby Street lights will be on from 2nd November.  Covent Garden are switched on from 7th November. Regent Street and St James' lights will be on from 9th November. The Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square will be switched on from 7th December.

There are also some light festivals happening in and around the city. Winter Light's at The Southbank Centre runs from 13th November - 7th January and is FREE! One of the most famous Christmas Lights events is at Kew Gardens . It's not cheap but its absolutely stunning!

Walking with The Snowman Trail - take a walk around the Fleet Street area and find all 12 Snowman Sculptures, each decorated in a unique way. You can download a map here .

Covent Garden sees the return of the Sleigh which is a great photo opportunity in the West Piazza South Hall from 1st November 9am - 9pm. Their 60 foot tall tree is always stunning, decorated with over 30,000 lights. 

Christmas at Leicester Square - a traditional Christmas market and this year there are shows to entertain. The market is free to enter but the shows are tickets only and quite pricey.

Winter By The River - wooden chalets selling Christmas treats and gifts running along th South Bank between London Bridge & Tower Bridge from 14th November to 1st January.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland - This has become an annual event with something for everyone from fairground rides, an ice rink and even Santaland. Open from 17th November to 1st January.

A Christmassy Show Stickman at Leicester Square Theatre, 4th November - 2nd January Elf The Musical at The Dominion Theatre, 15th November - 6th January  Peter Pan (Pantomime) at The London Palladium, 9th December - 14th January

Santa’s Grotto

10 dec @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm.

Santa returns to Orange Tree, Romford this December and he is bringing his teams of elves and entertainers. Join us for a day filled with festive and community spirit. The Grotto, now in its third year is a favourite among the families on the local area and beyond.

Santa will be here from 12pm-3pm.

Slots to meet Santa are £5 per child and include a gift from Santa and a photo to remember the occasion. All proceeds raised on the day will go towards supporting the Ukrainian Save The Children’s Fund.

As with every other year, our famous Elf disco is back! Our disco will keep the kids entertained before and after their visit with Santa, to make it a truly magical day for the entire family. One to remember for years to come.

The Elf disco will be running from 12-3pm and will include lots of fun and games for all of the family.

Looking for places to see Father Christmas in Essex? The great news is that there are lots of Santa’s Grottos and places to see Father Christmas. It’s one of the most festive things to do in Essex with kids.

There are lots of English Heritage properties in Essex and each one usually has some lovely Christmassy things to do in Essex. Keep an eye out for updates on their website.

If you like visiting English Heritage properties, we would recommend getting an English Heritage membership . Just a couple of visits to English Heritage properties will cover the cost of the pass and will get you into many of the special events for free.

Christmas lights in Essex

There are a couple of exciting Christmas light trails in Essex this year. You can also wander around some of the towns and villages in Essex and check out their light displays.

We love a Christmas market. We usually try to go to one of the European Christmas markets each year but there are also some fantastic Christmas markets in the UK .

Now we're officially in December, the countdown to the big day has officially begun.

We can finally throw on our Christmas jumpers, put Mariah Carey on repeat and decorate our houses to the NINES.

While we all know that Christmas isn't going to be quite the same this year because of Covid, there are still plenty of ways to get into the festive spirit.

Including meeting reindeer. Yep, you read that right, you can see Santa's Reindeer in real-life (sans the red nose).

There are a number of places in and around Essex where you can meet real life reindeer this Christmas - and we've listed them all below!

Colchester Zoo

The reindeer have returned to Colchester Zoo for Christmas.

Between December 14 and 18 zoo visitors will be able to see the reindeer at their stable.

The zoo is also offering VIP experiences with the reindeer.

This keeper shadowing experience is available to book throughout December.

For £85 you will get a half an hour experience with the reindeer and a member of the animal care team.

You also get a full days entrance to the zoo as well as a souvenir gift and a refreshment voucher.

Maldon Promenade Petting Zoo

The small petting zoo at Maldon Promenade Park has welcomed reindeer for the Christmas season.

You can meet the reindeer in the magical Christmas gardens as well as take part in a range of festive activities.

As well as being able to meet the reindeer at the zoo, you can even book a visit to your house.

The company are offering doorstep visits by two reindeer.

Oliver’s Nursery

Oliver's Nursery, in Witham is once again welcoming reindeer in time for Christmas.

The reindeer will be at the nursery between 10am and 4pm on Sunday, December 6.

You can learn all about the animals and this experience is completely free.

Old MacDonald's Farm

You can also meet real live reindeer at Old MacDonald's Farm, in Brentwood this year.

The reindeer can be seen everyday throughout November.

Old MacDonald's also have a huge amount of Christmas events going on his year.

Hopefield Animal Sanctuary

There aren't any animals that are more festive than reindeer, after all, Santa used them to pull his sleigh.

And you can meet them in real-life at Hopefield Animal Sanctuary.

The Brentwood based animal rescuers have three reindeer, Holly, Comet and Dancer.

This trio are very friendly and will often come to the fence to say hello (they think you might have treats for them).

Paradise Wildlife Park

Paradise Wildlife Park is making sure that Christmas is special this year.

As well as having a Santa's grotto and a 20 foot Christmas tree, you can also see reindeer.

Whilst on a day out at the zoo, make sure you visit the Woodland Walk, this is where you will find Santa'a reindeer.

Santa will be at Paradise every weekend from December 5 and everyday between December 18 and 24.

Willows Activity Farm

Willows Activity Farm, in St Albans will have real reindeer you can meet this Christmas.

Included in the ticket price you can visit the reindeer in the farmyard.

Whilst you are at the farm there are a whole load of festive activities to take part in.

Santa in London 2024: Where to find Father Christmas this year

There's no news on Santa in London in 2024 yet but here's where he was in 2023. As soon as new intel is in from the elves for more Santa fun, we'll update, so keep checking back!

Christmas at Ho Ho Hopefield Animal Sanctuary

All the profits for this one go back into caring for the 600+ rescued residents at this Essex animal sanctuary, and we've had a sneak peek of the Santa fun which definitely tickled our tinsel. Tickets go on sale mid-October and are limited, so get in quick. There will be a miniature Christmas village, Santa letter writing activity, free mulled wine and mince pie for the grown ups (warm ribena and mince pie for the kids), Christmas trail, Elfie Station, and, of course, that all important meet with Santa in his Christmas Barn, plus a gift for each paying child. The sanctuary will also be open for you to visit all the animals. Psst: we also hear rumour that there is also a Santa Paws Grrrrotto happening for your four-legged friends, and festive Xmas quiz too.

Shrek the Halls!

Santa Cares: Sensory Friendly Santa Experience

Sunday, December 9th from 9 am – 11 am

CherryVale Mall is teaming up with Cherry Hill Programs and Autism Speaks to host Santa Cares, a sensory-friendly event for children and family members with all spectrums of special needs to enjoy the time-honored tradition of the Santa Photo Experience in a calming environment prior to public hours. We want this to be an opportunity for families to visit and capture keepsake photo memories with Santa, so sensory triggers such as music, bright lights, and mall traffic will be muted.

Families are given numbers when they arrive, and can enjoy sensory friendly activities at a nearby table until it’s their turn to individually visit with Santa. We hope Santa Cares will bring smiles and holiday magic for many families who would not have the opportunity to visit Santa otherwise. Photo packages are available for purchase during the event.

The Santa Cares event will be held Sunday, December 9 from 9 am-11 am. Please RSVP in advance by reserving one free ticket per group. Click HERE to RSVP .

Story Hour with Mrs. Claus

Thursday, December 20th at 10 am in the play area

Mrs. Claus will read a story to the kids. This is a free event.

Open House and Pictures With Santa at The 3Rs

When: Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 10 am – 4 pm

Where:  The 3R’s Learning Materials Center 1643 N Alpine Rd, Ste 106, Rockford, IL

Santa will be visiting our store on November 17th from 11 am to 3 pm! Make sure you stop by to take a FREE picture with Santa, start your Christmas shopping, or to have your child make their Christmas list! If you picked up one of a coupon at Lockwood’s Pumpkin Fest, November 17th is the first day to start using them!

Santa’s Coming to Town in Cherry Valley

When:  Sunday, November 25, 2018 from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Where:  E.State Street, Cherry Valley

Santa will be at the Log Cabin from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., so don’t delay. Start working on your letter for Santa’s mailbox right away and please remember to include your return address. There will be plenty of hot chocolate and cookies being served.

*In case of bad weather, Santa will be at the Cherry Valley Village Hall, 806 E. State Street.

Santa Visits the Museum

When:  Sunday, December 2, 2018 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Where:  Vintage Wings and Wheels Museum 5151 Orth Rd #A1, Poplar Grove, IL

Cost: Information pending

Help us welcome Santa to the Wings and Wheels Museum. Santa will greet children of all ages and take their requests. Parents won’t want to miss this chance for a great picture of their little ones (and some bigger ones) and Santa. We will be entertained by the Belvidere North Choraliers with a variety of Holiday music. Kid’s activities and an opportunity for to write a letter to Santa. Santa will have gift bags for all children. Cookies and Cider for everyone.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

When:  Saturday, December 8 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am

Where:  Roscoe YMCA 9901 Main St, Roscoe, IL

Join us as we get a visit from Jolly Old Saint Nick! We will be decorating cookies and taking pictures with Santa. We will also have games, bouncy houses, crafts and face painting. Please help the Rockton Food Pantry by donating a non-perishable or canned food item.

Got a Christmas wish to tell Santa? Here are 9 places he'll be in the Rockford area

With the holiday season right around the corner, Santa Claus is preparing to make his annual pre-Christmas Eve visits to the Rockford area. 

Here’s a list of places to catch Santa while he's in town, snap a few pictures, share some treats and let him and Mrs. Claus know what you want to see under your tree. 

CherryVale Mall

What: CherryVale Mall is Santa’s first stop in the region. Kids can spend a few moments with him for free, however, photos with cellphones or personal cameras are not allowed. Professional photos are available for purchase onsite.

Dates:  Nov. 17 through Dec. 24

Time:  11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday (Santa takes an hour break every day to feed his reindeer. Holiday hours subject to change).

Stroll on State

What : Following the Stroll on State parade through downtown Rockford, Santa will be roaming the festival, talking to children of all ages. Catch St. Nick making s’mores, enjoying a cup of hot chocolate or tending to his reindeer. Pictures are encouraged.

Time:  2 to 9 p.m.

Williams Tree Farm

What : There’s plenty of time to see Santa and Mrs. Claus at Williams Tree Farm this year. The famous couple will be available for a total of 10 days between Nov. 18 and Dec. 18 inside the Williams log cabin. As always, Santa will have one of his favorite reindeer, Dancer, with him. Photos are encouraged.

Dates: Nov. 18-19, 24-26, Dec. 2-3, 9-10, 17-18

Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lou Bachrodt Toy Drive

What : Despite his busy schedule, Santa will be stopping by the annual toy drive at Lou Bachrodt Auto Mall for photos.

Date : Friday, Dec. 1

Time : Santa will at the toy drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The toy drive itself runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Kegel Harley Davidson

What : Santa Claus will be visiting Rockford’s Harley Davidison dealership this year, helping staff collect canned and other non-perishable food donations. Photos are encouraged. Kids will receive gift bags from Santa.

Dates: Dec. 2, 16

Time: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Address: 7125 Harrison Ave., Rockford

Cost: Free; Non-perishable food donation appreciated

What : Santa will be at Kids Spot in Roscoe, for Cookies & Cocoa , as kids play, decorate Christmas cookies and drink hot chocolate. Photos are welcome.

Date: Saturday, Dec. 16

Time: 3 to 5 p.m.

Address: 9461 N. 2nd St., Roscoe

Cost: $35 per child ($25 for additional child), $60 for family of four ($5 for additional parent)

Riverview Inn & Suites (Cliffbreakers)

What : Join Riverview Inn & Suites for this year's Santa’s Brunch that includes pancakes, ham, French toast, smoked salmon, fresh fruit, dessert and more. There will also be craft stations, photo opportunities and entertainment.

Times: 10 a.m. to noon; noon to 2 p.m.

Cost: $32.95 for adults, $15.95 for kids (ages 4-10)

Machine Shed

What : The Machine Shed’s Kid’s Night with Santa allows kids to meet Santa, take photos and eat for half price all day.

Date: Tuesday, Dec. 12

Time: 5 to 7 p.m.

Cost: Free admission

Freeport Public Library

What : Santa will make a stop at Freeport Public Library on Dec. 7 for a special storytelling session that includes some of St. Nick’s favorites. Photos are welcome.
