What do other 3 guests say about virtual tour of valley of the kings, things to know.
Valley of the Kings – Luxor’s Ancient Valley where Kings and Nobles were Buried
Valley of the Kings is without question one of the most historically significant archaeological sites in the world, and it is one which features in nearly all of our Egypt tour packages . For roughly 200 years, archaeologists have been exploring the valley where many of Ancient Egypt’s New Kingdom kings were buried. During this time, they have discovered 62 ancient tombs in the valley, along with a number of extra tombs and tomb entrances, with the latest discovery being made in 2008. The valley is essentially a royal necropolis that was used by the rulers of Egypt for a period of 500 years.
Being a “royal necropolis” the valley was reserved for the burial of Egypt’s New Kingdom kings, including the tomb of King Tutankhamun, the tomb of King Ramses II, the tomb of King Ramses III, and the tomb of King Ramses Vi, to name just a few. The tombs of a few lesser nobles have also been discovered in the Valley of Kings, along with the tomb with a tomb which is believed to be the tomb in which Queen Hatshepsut was laid to rest.. However, not all of the tombs in the west valley were actually used for burial purposes. Instead, several of them simply remained vacant.

The Valley of the Kings, also known as the Kings Valley, is one of the most visited Luxor tourist attractions , with an average of around 5,000 people visiting the site each day during the high season.. On days when Nile River cruise ships dock in Luxor , the number of tourists can climb to as many as 9,000. It is without doubt one of the most fascinating places in all of Egypt.
A Brief History of the West Valley (Valley Of The Kings)
Even though exploration in the Valley of the Kings started roughly 200 years ago, and despite 62 royal tombs having been discovered during this time, only eleven of them have been completely recorded. Tombs that are discovered are classified as either major tombs or minor tombs. Minor tombs generally don’t contain anything of interest. Even many of the major tombs discovered revealed very little, and quite often they have been virtually empty due to tomb robbers.
In 1907 explorers found a tomb (kv 62) which they believed was that of King Tutankhamen, but after this discovery, no other major tomb has been discovered, and in fact, by 1912, many people believed that the Valley of the Kings had been exhausted. Nevertheless, Lord Carnarvan, a wealthy British explorer was successful at obtaining a concession to continue excavating the valley. To do this he hired an archaeologist by the name of Howard Carter.
Howard Carter discovered a number of tombs in the years that followed, and in 1922 he made history when he announced that he had found the real tomb of King Tutankhamen. The inner chamber that housed the body of the king was essentially a hidden chamber and it was only opened for the first time on the 16 th of February 1923.
The Missing Mummies of Kings
Interestingly, there were no mummies found in nearly all of the tombs belonging to the great pharaohs. Many of the tombs in the Valley of Kings still had treasures and a limited amount of antiquities, but the bodies of the pharaohs had long since been removed by ancient priests in order to spare the pharaohs from tomb robbers. King Amenhotep II and King Tutankhamen were the only two pharaohs found in their tombs.
Explorers have however discovered the mummies of several pharaohs placed together in two different locations. Many archeologists also believe that there is most likely a third cache that has yet to be discovered. Sadly, all tombs discovered to date have at some point in history been entered by thieves.
East Bank vs. West Bank
Most tourists will find themselves exploring the west bank part of the valley since this is where nearly all the tombs are located. The east bank by comparison is only home to two major tombs, and as such, it gets far fewer visitors. Also, while there are typically around 10 or more tombs open to tourists on the west bank, only one is open on the east bank.
Visiting the Tombs in the Famous Royal Necropolis
The Valley of the Kings visitor center is open every day throughout the year. However, it should be noted that even though several tombs are open to the public, only a limited number of these are open at any one time. Additionally, a separate ticket needs to be purchased in order to enter the tomb of King Tutankhamen and also to enter the open tomb on the opposite side of the river.
Nearly all of our Nile River cruises include a visit to the Valley of the Kings, regardless of whether you book one of our Nile cruises from Luxor to Aswan , or whether you book one of our Nile cruises from Aswan to Luxor . We personally rate Valley of the Kings as one of Egypt’s finest attractions.

Ramesses VI Nebmaatre-Meryamun was the fifth pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty of Egypt (mid to late 12th century BC). He was buried in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, in a tomb now known as KV9 .
Earlier this year, the Egyptian Tourism Authority released an incredible 3D virtual tour of the tomb and the detail and artistry is astounding. Below you will find some screen shots from the virtual tour but be sure to explore it for yourself here .

Humanities Teaching Academy
Using virtual reality to explore the valley of the kings.
After contacting the Humanities eLearning team, I borrowed around 25 Google cardboard sets, and two Learning Technologists also accompanied us in the Mansfield Cooper Archaeology lab – to help out in the case of running into technical issues.
The students were first set the task of constructing the VR headsets themselves as Google Cardboard works by inserting your own device within folded pieces of cardboard behind a plastic lenses area, and they then logged into the site describingegypt.com .
Next, the students followed along as I took them on a guided tour of the tomb of Ramesses VI in the Valley of the Kings while explaining what they were seeing, where to focus and what to pay attention to, and in general what had happened historically in various different sections of the experience.
The short video clip below shows the class in action:
I would not recommend that tutors simply let students ‘roam free’. This may be useful for a few minutes at the end of a virtual tour, but fundamentally, they need a clear script.
Evaluation / Student Feedback
Some replies to the question “What do you think worked most well?” which was asked in an anonymous survey among the students immediately after the virtual tour ended:
“The experience was very realistic and I felt like I was inside the tomb”
“it was a fun experience and nice to have everything explained”
“Understanding the physical layout of the tomb and the decoration”
“The fact to really visualize ideas, explications and concepts”
“Really helped understanding the visual landscape of the tomb and how it was made as well as the specific elements and stories around them”
“The combination of the visuals and Nicky’s commentary”
“Being able to see everything as it was being described was incredibly helpful in understanding the placement of everything, and helped with getting a full idea of what tombs looked like”
- Greater understanding of physical layouts
- Make sure you have a script with stops so that the students all follow along.
- Contact the eLearning Team if you would also like to provide a similar experience to this one, as there are a number of Learning Technologists with experience in VR and gaming who’d be happy to help you out.

This is where Pharaoh Akhenaten pursued his vision of a society dedicated to the cult of one god – Aten, the sun god – later considered heretical. Visit the nobles’ tombs with wall reliefs unequaled anywhere else in Egypt.
After sightseeing, you depart to Abydos – the holy city of Osiris in ancient times.
Day 6 – Abydos Temple / Dendera Temple
Start the day by visiting the Abydos Temple – also known as the Temple of Seti I, who began its construction. The temple is built of white limestone and, artistically, represents an attempt to restore the old ways after the heresies of Akhenaten. It was once the holiest site in the land and the burial place for the first kings of unified Egypt.
Next, you visit Dendera to explore a temple dedicated to the goddess Hathor. This one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt sets itself apart from other temples by its colossal columns and spectacular ceilings covered with vibrant and colorful paintings.
After sightseeing, you depart to Luxor, the ancient city of Thebes and one of the capitals of ancient Egypt, to check in at a luxurious Sofitel Winter Palace. It is where Howard Carter announced the discovery of King Tut’s tomb and Agatha Christie wrote part of Death on the Nile .
Day 7 – Karnak and Luxor Temples / Private Entry to the Valley of the Kings with Dr. Waziri / Luxor Market
Your first stop today is Karnak , the largest temple complex in the world. Walk through the avenue of sphinxes, gaze up at the towering 97-foot-tall obelisk and wander among the massive pillars of the Great Hypostyle Hall. Then, it’s on to the magnificent Luxor Temple . It was built over hundreds of years by the New Kingdom pharaohs including Tutankhamun and Ramses II. To this day the temple is one of the greatest reflections of the pharaohs’ power and supremacy.
After these visits, you check in to the luxurious cruise ship – your floating hotel for the next five days.
Later in the day, you are in for a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. You are granted private entry to the Valley of the Kings . It was a royal cemetery for over 500 years, and 62 pharaohs and other nobles were buried there. Imagine exploring one of Egypt’s most spectacular destinations all by yourself, with no other tourists around. During this unprecedented visit, in the exclusive company of Dr. Mostafa Waziri , you have access to some of the best-known tombs, including King Tutankhamun’s , which was famously found intact in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter. Gain first-hand exclusive insight into the newest findings in the Valley of the Kings and the ongoing search for the lost royal tombs.
In the evening you explore Luxor Market , an authentic, open-air souk. There, you have a chance to connect with locals at every turn and sample regional delicacies.
Day 8 – Valley of the Queens / Temple of Hatshepsut / Colossi of Memnon / Nile River Cruise
Start the day by exploring the Valley of the Queens . It served as the burial site for the queens and some of the children of the 19th and 20th Dynasty pharaohs. You visit four very well-preserved tombs, including Nefertari’s , which is regarded as the most beautiful in Egypt because of its vivid and ornate paintings.
Later, explore the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut , one of the most characteristic temples in Luxor. It was built for the most successful female pharaoh to rule over Egypt. On the way back to the cruise ship you stop to admire the Colossi of Memnon , two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III.
The rest of the afternoon is free for leisure. You can enjoy the stunning views of the Nile from the cruise ship’s sundeck while sailing to Edfu or avail yourself of some of the ship’s other amenities. Before dinner, you are invited to the captain’s cocktail party , where you meet the crew and enjoy delicious local and international cocktails.
Day 9 – Edfu Temple / Nile River Cruise / Q&A Session / Kom Ombo Temple
Begin the day with a visit to the marvelous Temple of Edfu . It is among the best-preserved ancient temples in Egypt, built between 237 and 57 BC, and dedicated to the falcon god Horus.
On the way along the Nile to the next site, you can enjoy a drink on the ship’s beautiful sundeck while admiring the local wildlife, flourishing green fields, picturesque villages, palm trees and desert in the distance.
