All in all, the tour was good for me. The pace was a good for me also. The tour leader it was great. I think I have seen most of everything I needed to see. The only thing I felt was that sometimes it was a lot of driving for some thing not as exciting to me. Of course turkey is a big country to circle around by driving.

Turkey Classics Tour

The tour was great, very well organized. I would recommend it to anyone, especially for someone visiting Turkey for the first time. Our tour guide was a great guy, knowledgeable, good attitude. I would have given 5 starts if we did not have problems with the tour bus, it did break twice.

Magic Carpet Tour

First and foremost, our guide, Ilke Ceren Ses, was just outstanding. She was unbelievably knowledgeable about history, culture and politics; she was very friendly, kind, enthusiastic and helpful; and she bent over backwards to help each of us with any problems we encountered with food, communication and arrangements for special excursions. On the first day, I twisted my ankle and it could have ruined my trip - but she found some ice right away, and had me sit and rest the ankle, and by the next day it was fine. She is a gem. It was my first experience with a guided tour, and the experience has encouraged me to try a tour again. The one thing I didn't like was the amount of time we had to spend sitting in a van. I'm not sure how you could change the geography of the tour to avoid so much travel, though. It would also be nice to stay in one city for more days so we didn't have to pack up and reload the van every morning. Also: please consider giving tour participants a more thorough itinerary. There were a number of stops on the tour that weren't on the printed itinerary, and it would be extremely helpful to know what to expect (i.e. should we bring money along if we are going to shop at a jewelry store) and how long (approximately) we would be walking around in the hot sun at each site, so we could know if we should carry water, hat, etc or if we should leave them in the van. For an older person like myself, that info is really important. Thank you.

Enjoyable tour that took you around some must-see parts of Turkey. Highlight of the trip was the 2 night stay on the boat- the couple who owned the boat were so lovely and they cooked phenomenal meals for us during our stay. Accommodation was decent and we were lucky to have had a private bus that took us around during the first part of the tour. Highly recommend!

Absolutely Turkey Tour

Absolutely Turkey

This tour was a 6 night tour of the western parts of Turkey. There was a lot of sitting in a coach which we expected but because we were a relatively small group, we were placed into a much smaller coach which had less power, not great suspension and no toilet facilities which meant we had to stop frequently at service stations etc. We often didn't reach our hotels until after 7 pm. The sights we saw were fantastic and the balloon ride over Cappadocia plus the optional extra of staying in a cave hotel was a plus too! Unfortunately our guide was not very engaging nor was he very friendly although one could not fault him on his knowledge. I think I would encourage people to do a little more research before choosing this tour - I would give it a 6/10.

9 Days Turkey Super Saver Tour Tour

9 Days Turkey Super Saver Tour

We had a great experience with a 9-day tour of Turkey, visiting Istanbul, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Konya and Cappadocia, with Turkey Escapades in April 2023. Mehmet was very responsive in answering our questions prior to and during the trip (to confirm pickup times, hot air balloon rides, etc.) and we really appreciated his proactiveness in re-booking our hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia when the first booking was cancelled. One thing to note is that we did not travel with the same group of people throughout the tour; instead, it was just our family in the vehicle transfers to and from airports, and from Pamukkale to Cappadocia. And then at the actual sites (Ephesus, Hierapolis, Konya), we joined small groups of different tourists and were shown around by different tour guides. The tour guides at each site were friendly and efficient; the drivers were punctual and drove well. We appreciated the choice of hotels: the Erboy Hotel in Istanbul was in a great location; the MDC Cave Hotel in Cappadocia was unique and had the friendliest staff and very nice food. Unfortunately the staff -- especially the spa staff -- at the Pam Thermal Hotel in Pamukkale were rude and unhelpful; there were zero smiles and very poor service; however this was just a short part of the tour. Overall we would like to express our thanks to Mehmet and his team for a wonderful trip to Turkey!

City of Sultans was superb for my tour of Turkey (October 2023). Professional, consistent and high quality service. Great communication. I had a private tour of Istanbul and Cappadocia and the guides were top notch. Everything on the itinerary was delivered with no hiccups. I highly recommend them for a worry free and enjoyable vacation to Turkey!

Reviews of Small Group tours to Turkey

Very good trip. The leader Engin was excellent and was at our Bec and call 24/7. I feel for his sanity he needs some nights off and just tell us about a few restaurants but not take us there - do his own thing. The whole group doesn’t need to always be together. We had one person that struggled to keep up with group and I felt some pressure to wait for her or help her- I don’t think she had much insight into the affect she was having on group. Otherwise was a great and diverse group.
Our trip was very good! We love our tour guide Fatih who was very knowledgeable and helpful. The driver was excellent. we loved both of them! The accommodation could be better, some of them were quite far from the center. The included meals were quite good! We enjoyed the trip very much and we would highly recommend!
Fez Travel packed in lots of sights and things to see and do. I liked the variety in our stops and sights. Well planned except for the last couple of days. Somehow, they need to be tweaked so there are not so many unreasonable night departures. I would have rather paid a bit more and had the meals ordered when we sat down. Buffet meals were luke warm, over cooked, and meats were so dry from heating for long periods. The meals we sat down and was served were much better, tastier, better variety of foods.

Culture and customs.

Turkey has a strong national identity and both its location and the legacy of the Ottoman Empire have contributed to a cultural mix of influences from  Europe ,  Asia  and the  Middle East . Cultural practices vary significantly depending on which region of Turkey you are travelling in. It's important to remember that while most Turkish cities are modern metropolises, Turks can still be quite traditional.

Travelers will find Turkish people to be polite and quite formal in their greetings, kind and hospitable as hosts and friendly as new acquaintances. While bars and nightclubs are common in big cities like Istanbul, outside of these environments it’s a good idea to take your cues from the locals and behave in a subdued manner. This doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, but raucous behavior should be contained to the appropriate venues and kept off the street.

While Turkey is nominally secular, the vast majority of the population identifies as Muslim and Islamic holidays like Ramazan (Ramadan) and Eid are widely observed and recognized as public holidays.

How to be a respectful traveler in Turkey

  • Clean your plate If you’re eating with locals (particularly as a guest in their home), you’ll make them very happy if you eat multiple servings and finish everything on your plate. Plan ahead and arrive on an empty stomach for extra points.
  • Know when to haggle Remember the first rule of bartering is to decide how much you’re willing to spend beforehand and use that as your guide. In regular shops – as opposed to markets – don’t attempt to haggle over prices.
  • Respect the elderly Small gestures like letting elderly folks go ahead of you through doors, offering them your seat on public transport and generally being considerate and respectful of older people will be greatly appreciated.
  • Keep criticism private It’s a good rule of thumb not to criticize the culture, government or politics of Turkey. While not all Turks are strict nationalists, you could cause a lot of trouble and offense. You should especially avoid discussing topics related to the Kurdish or Armenian people. When in doubt, follow the conversational lead of the locals. If you’re traveling with Intrepid, ask your leader for guidance. If you’re after a little insight into the geopolitical complexities of Turkey, check out the 'further reading' list below for some perspectives from Turkish authors.

History and government

Ancient history.

There is evidence of hominin habitation in the region known as Anatolia, or Asian Turkey, that dates as far back as 500,000 years and ample evidence of numerous Neolithic settlements popping up between 8000 and 10,000 years ago.

Notable civilizations who occupied the prehistoric Anatolian region were the Hattians (circa 2500 BC to 2000 BC), the Hittites (circa 1700 BC to 1200 BC) and the Assyrians. From around 2000 BC, Greeks began settling in north-western Anatolia and the southern coasts, establishing individual city-states.

Pre-modern history

The majority of Anatolia was conquered by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. After his death, a succession of various Greek-Macedonian rulers controlled the area until 133 BC when the region was given to the Roman Republic.

Roman control had little impact on the dominant classical Greek culture, which continued to thrive in Anatolia until the region’s absorption into the Byzantine Empire.

Between the sixth and 11th centuries a massive wave of what is known as the ‘Turkic migration’ occurred, and millions traveled across Central Asia into Europe and the Middle East . Among this migratory wave were various Turkic tribes who brought the Islamic religion and Turkic languages that dominate modern Turkey.

The Byzantine Empire sustained a number of invasions and limped forward before finally collapsing in the 14th century, by which point much of Anatolia was already controlled by tribal micro-kingdoms. One of these Turkic tribal groups, the Ottomans, emerged as the dominant regional power during the 15th century and enjoyed a few hundred years of expansion and growth until territorial losses forced its eventual decline in the 19th century.

20th century

The final dissolution of the Ottoman Empire after defeat at the hands of the Allies in WWI was followed by a brief period of Allied occupation before the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk became the republic’s first president and introduced radical reforms to modernize Turkey and imbue it with a unique identity that was separate from that of the former empire. His ideas continue to be influential in contemporary politics today.

In the decades since the death of Ataturk in 1938, Turkey has seen a number of swings between democratic and autocratic governance, interrupted by brief periods of military governance and occasional political chaos.

Turkey today is a presidential republic where the ruling political parties have historically been nationalist and somewhat economically liberal, with a varying amount of Islamic influence.

Far-left political activist groups and minority rebel groups have waxed and waned in terms of public and political influence. The most notable is the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a militant political group originally formed with the intention of creating a Kurdish separatist state. The arrest of PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan in 1999 was a crushing blow to the once-powerful group, though they continue to operate with the stated aim of ensuring the rights and autonomy of the Kurdish people in Turkey and beyond.

More recently, Turkey has experienced relative prosperity and political stability, though the economy – based on mineral mining, agriculture, tourism and construction – continues to fluctuate between growth and stasis.

Eating and drinking

Home to some of the tastiest produce you can get your hands on, traditional cooking methods and influence from Asia, Europe and the Middle East, Turkey’s food is surprising, delicious and delightful (pun definitely intended).

Plant-based options

Many Turkish favorites are already non-meat. Gozleme, simit and cig kofte are all vegetarian and easy to find in markets, street corner food stands and restaurants. Vegans will have a trickier time finding pre-made dishes that contain no animal products. However, Turkey has an abundance of markets selling fresh produce, bread and extras like hummus and fava bean dip. With a little planning, vegans will be able to assemble meze-style lunches when pre-made options aren’t available.

In dishes like soups and stews it’s a good idea to watch out for beef stock – called et suyu – as it is used frequently even in ‘vegetarian’ dishes.

Must-try Turkish dishes and beverages

  • Gozleme This spinach and cheese pastry is a tasty budget-friendly bite that will satisfy everyone (especially vegetarians).
  • Lokum Love it or hate it, this divisive treat (known internationally as Turkish delight) can be found in shops, bazaars and street stalls nearly everywhere in Turkey. Made from rosewater, lemon, sugar, cornflour and water, it's relatively easy to make… and even easier to eat.
  • Simit As far as quick and easy snacks go it’s hard to pass up simit, a bread similar to a sesame-encrusted bagel. Carts selling simit can be found at bus and train stations, main streets and other busy thoroughfares in most cities.
  • Cig kofte Made with bulgur, onion, tomato paste and spices, this south-eastern specialty is essentially a big ol’ vegetarian ‘meatball’. The traditional kind (made with raw meat) is now banned, so you can eat without fear of food poisoning.
  • Fish sandwiches Particularly if you’re spending time in the Bosphorus, a fish sandwich (or balik ekmek) is a must-try local dish. Made with white fish, onion and salad, it’s a simple classic that hits the spot.
  • Manti Though the ingredients that fill these handmade dumplings vary, the best kind are filled with lamb and served with yogurt and butter. It’s hard to move after polishing off a plate, but so worth it.
  • Turkish coffee Turkish coffee is known around the world for its unique brewing method. It's made with arabica beans which are ground into a fine powder and boiled with cardamom and water in a cevze – a pretty copper or brass pot with a long, thin handle.

Geography and environment

A fairly mountainous country sharing borders with Bulgaria , Greece , Syria, Iraq, Iran , Armenia , Georgia and Azerbaijan , Turkey also has wide stretches of coastline along the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Seas.

Blessed with large tracts of fertile soil, Turkey is one of the world's biggest agricultural producers, and visitors can expect to see many farms, orchards, plantations and areas of permanent crops occupying certain regions.

Due to its location, Turkey is home to a wide variety of landscapes, from the rocky, forested coastline of the Black Sea region to the fertile plateaus of the Marmara, the white sand beaches of the Aegean and the limestone formations of the Mediterranean. Adding further environmental diversity, the Anatolia highlands (considered the heartland of the country) feature rugged snow-capped peaks and crystalline lakes.

With one of the biggest bazaars in the world, flea markets aplenty and a cutting-edge contemporary fashion scene in the bigger cities, shopping in Turkey is more diverse than you might think.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country, particularly perishable items. Australia and New Zealand, for example, generally have strict quarantine laws.

A note on ceramics

While beautifully decorated tiles and ceramics overflow from Turkey’s market stalls, you should keep in mind that their point of origin can be hard to decipher. In other words, watch out for fakes. The real deal tends to be pretty expensive (but worth it, if you ask us). Of course, if you’re just after something pretty to remind you of your travels, don’t feel too bad about reaching for the inexpensive option.

Things to buy in Turkey

  • Handwoven carpets Turkish carpets are a worldwide phenomenon and represent centuries of artistic tradition woven into a beautiful work of art. Go in with an idea of how much you’re willing to pay and don’t be afraid to bargain a little. Just keep in mind that quality craftsmanship deserves to be rewarded with a fair price. A lot of vendors and stores will give you the carpet in a bag suitable to transport as luggage, or you might consider shipping it back home.
  • Nazar boncuk (evil eye talisman) Want to bring home a little piece of Turkey and ward off evil spirits and intentions at the same time? An evil eye talisman is a perfect thing. You’ll see these little blue ‘eyes’ in every shop and the majority of Turks carry one with them wherever they go.
  • Jewelry Turkey's artisan-made gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are good buys. Bazaars, boutiques, museum gift shops and silversmiths offer a wide range of designs from modern to Ottoman-inspired.
  • Brass and copper You can find an assortment of brass and copper decorative objects for the home in the bazaars of Turkey. Serving platters, pitchers, trays, pots and urns will add some souvenir flair to your kitchen.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular events.

Whether or not you want to travel during Ramazan (Ramadan) will depend on what kind of adventure you’re after. If you love immersing yourself in local culture and religious practices (and don’t mind a little inconvenience) you might just find traveling during this holy month a fascinating and enriching experience. While the days are dedicated to fasting and contemplation, the evenings are full of colorful celebration and, of course, feasting! Plus, there are fewer tourists around to compete with.

Anniversary of the Anzac campaign

Thousands of people head to Gallipoli every year to pay their respects to fallen Australian , New Zealand and Turkish soldiers who died during the bloody Gallipoli campaign of WWI. The moving dawn ceremony is an iconic event that grows in popularity each year, so if you're hoping to head to Gallipoli in April for Anzac Day, plan ahead.

Efes Pilsen One Love Festival

This annual summer music festival held in Istanbul presents two days of rock, pop, folk and electronic entertainment for masses of locals and visitors keen on soaking up some tunes and summer love.

Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Championships

Want to see thousands of oiled-up men wrestle and grapple with each other? Then this is the festival for you! This wrestling championship is held over several days, usually in late June, when Turkey's national sport is celebrated with gusto and fanfare. Apart from the one-on-one wrestling bouts, there’s Romani bands, traditional food and belly dancers providing the perfect sideshow attractions.

Cappadox Festival

Set in the otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia, this eco-friendly music festival features artists and musicians performing on solar-powered stages and inside the ancient caves that the region is famous for. Held around June, the festival was originally an annual event but has moved to a biennial timetable.

Turkey travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Turkey?

You may need a visa to enter Turkey depending on where you’re from. Foreign nationals from several countries will need an e-visa that allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, including:

  • South Africa

Travelers from many countries – including  New Zealand , the  United Kingdom , Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,  Japan , Norway, Sweden and  Switzerland  – don’t require a visa for stays of less than three months if the trip is for tourism or business purposes.

When is the best time to visit Turkey?

The best time to visit Turkey is typically during the shoulder seasons of March to May or September to October when the temperatures are still warm and there aren't yet large summer crowds.

For the best beach weather, the hottest time of year is June and July, however, this collides with the summer holidays, so it will be busy.

The cooler months are quieter and accommodation (when still open) is cheaper.

If you are planning to travel to the eastern reaches of Turkey during Ramadan/Ramazan, it’s important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours. However, the carnival atmosphere that erupts when the fast breaks in the evening is magical, so travelers who enjoy immersive cultural experiences might prefer to travel during the holy month.

What's the weather like in Turkey?

The weather in Turkey depends on the time of year and region you're visiting. The southern coastlines typically experience a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and wet winters, while the interior regions can experience drastic temperature changes and even snow.

If you're planning on swimming, the water is generally still warm up until the start of November and October is great as it's much quieter.

Weather in Istanbul is fairly temperate, sheltered from severe weather by its proximity to the coastlines.

Is tipping customary in Turkey?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Turkey, a cash tip that equals a small percentage of the total bill is very much appreciated in restaurants.

It's also customary to tip staff while visiting hammams (bathhouses). It's not necessary to tip taxi drivers, although rounding up the fare for convenience is commonplace.

What is the internet access like in Turkey?

Free wi-fi is common in Turkey’s cities, but the quality of connection varies. Alternatively, Turkey has an abundance of internet cafes in large cities, and most of them serve coffee and snacks so you can refuel while you catch up with folks back home.

Internet access can be spotty or non-existent in rural areas, so it’s best to treat travel in these regions as an opportunity for a digital detox.

Can I use my mobile phone while in Turkey?

Mobile phone coverage is good in Turkey, especially in large cities. Coverage may not be available in more remote areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your mobile carrier before you leave home if you wish to use your mobile.

What are the toilets like in Turkey?

Turkey has a mix of Western-style and squat-style toilets, sometimes with a jug of water for manual flushing. The latter becomes more common the more remote the region, however, there's typically a Western-style toilet in every bathroom.

Toilets are known as WCs (short for water closets) in Turkey.

Many public toilets require a small payment of roughly 2-10 TRY for use, so make sure you carry change when out and about.

You may find the standards of hygiene and sanitation in Turkey are laxer than you are used to so it's a good idea to carry toilet paper and hand sanitiser if you are concerned.

What will it cost for a…?

Turkey's unit of currency is the lira (TRY). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Half-litre of beer = 50-60 TRY
  • Simit (local bread roll) = 10 TRY
  • Casual restaurant meal = 300 TRY
  • Mid-range restaurant meal = 600 TRY
  • Basic hammam visit = 1000 + TRY/50 EURO

Can I drink the water in Turkey?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Turkey. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water or carry water purification tablets with you. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Turkey?

Major credit cards are widely accepted in tourist shopping areas and large hotels in Turkey, but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors, in remote towns and rural areas. We recommend carrying cash for purchases to avoid being caught out.

What is ATM access like in Turkey?

ATMs are available in large cities in Turkey but are not common in rural areas and smaller towns. Be prepared for this by having enough cash before traveling out of the city.

What to wear in Turkey

Turkey can get quite warm in summer and during the shoulder seasons but it’s important to remember that clothing that covers you from elbows to below the knee is appropriate in (or even around) mosques. Think linen pants, lightweight tops/shirts and long dresses. Female travelers should also carry a scarf on them to wear when visiting mosques.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

What public holidays are celebrated in Turkey?

  • 1 January New Year's Day
  • 23 April National Sovereignty and Children's Day
  • 1 May Labour Day
  • 19 May Youth & Sports Day
  • 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day
  • 30 August Victory Day

The 30-day Islamic holy month of Ramazan (Ramadan) is widely observed in Turkey. The exact dates change every year, so it’s important you check when Ramazan will take place in the year you plan to travel. As a general rule, there are five consecutive public holidays observed at the beginning of the month and a few observed at the end.

The level of celebration varies considerably depending on what part of Turkey you are in. The east has a larger Muslim population and therefore a more devoutly observed Ramazan, whereas the southern and western coasts will be less affected.

Kurban (Eid al-Adha)

A four to five-day public holiday is observed during Kurban (Eid al-Adha), though like Ramazan the exact dates of this observation change every year.

Is Turkey safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers should be aware that while Turkey is nominally secular it can also be very conservative. As such, negative attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ individuals are common, particularly outside major cities.

While same-sex relationships and non-normative gender presentation are not against the law in Turkey, LGBTQIA+ people have no legally enshrined protection from discrimination. Legal prohibitions against ‘ offenses against public morality’ can and have been used to persecute LGBTQIA+ folks, though the likelihood of this being used to target travelers is low.

Transgender travelers, in particular, should be aware that trans people in Turkey report being the targets of violence and overt discrimination.

Istanbul and Ankara have established queer scenes, both of which are primarily oriented around cisgender gay men and to a lesser extent cisgender gay women. However, same-sex couples are still unlikely to engage in public displays of affection in these cities.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Turkey accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

While infrastructure is improving, much of Turkey remains difficult to navigate for wheelchair users and people with mobility concerns. Many cities in Turkey have been occupied for thousands of years and their design reflects that, with little regard given to making streets and attractions accessible. Travelers with impaired mobility will find that while tourist locales in Istanbul, such as hotels and mosques, are fitted with ramps and connected by an accessible tram, getting around the rest of the city can be challenging. Rural regions like Cappadocia will be difficult for travelers with mobility impairment to navigate independently.

Squat toilets remain the norm in many parts of Turkey, which can pose problems for travelers with certain disabilities.

Traffic in Turkey can be chaotic, and even when traffic lights and pedestrian crossings exist drivers do not always obey them. Taxis are, for the most part, not wheelchair-friendly.

Travelers who use battery-operated hearing aids should consider bringing a stash of extra batteries, as they can be difficult to locate in Turkey.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Does my trip to Turkey support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Turkey directly support our foundation partner, C ontemporary Life Support Association (CYDD) .

These locally run guesthouses are the perfect blend of a comfortable homestay and a hotel, combining well-situated and authentic Turkish accommodation with modern conveniences.

How will I be traveling around Turkey?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport – which usually have less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Does my Intrepid trip include airfare?

While our Intrepid trips include many modes of transport, from tuk-tuks to overland vehicles, bullet trains and feluccas, airfare to and from your home country is not included in your tour package.

The Most Unique Experiences in Turkey

Rize

Every visitor has their own list of unique experiences from their time in Turkey because of the country’s rich array of cultural, historical, natural, and culinary enticements. From hiking trails to oil wrestling championships, Culture Trip takes a look at some of the most unique Turkish experiences.

There’s nothing like having someone scrub you down and then wash and massage you in a cloud of soap foam, especially inside a historical hamam decked out in marble and a whole lot of steam. The hamam experience is definitely one of Turkey’s foremost attractions, and many visitors look forward to a relaxing and thoroughly cleansing Turkish bath.

Whirling Dervishes

The whirling dervishes are part of the Mevlevi/Sufi Order founded by 13th-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi-Rumi and explores elements of mysticism within Islam. The whirling dervish ceremony is a truly striking experience not only visually because of the dervish robe and perfected movement but also because of the spiritual aura that the ritual expresses.

Cooking classes

The Turkish kitchen is a true amalgamation of its many regions that all have their own recipes and ingredients, not to mention the multitudinous inventions of the imperial Ottoman kitchens. As such, a glimpse into Turkish cuisine is always a unique experience for those who’d like to understand the country’s many dishes on a more hands-on level.

The Lycian Way

Many are already quite familiar with Turkey’s major sights such as Istanbul’s imperial mosques and palaces, Ephesus, Cappadocia, etc.; however, the ruins of the Lycian Empire are still a bit on the down low. The Lycian Way is an excellent hiking trail that stretches 540 kilometers (336 miles) along the coast and passes by about 25 remote historical Lycian sites. The footpath can take around 29 days to complete and goes from Fethiye to Antalya.

Hike the Lycian Way

Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival

Oil wrestling is probably one of Turkey’s most unusual sports in which athletes are doused in oil before they wrestle for the win. The Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival has been taking place since 1346 and is the place to see both younger athletes and the champions (called Pehlivan) battle it out on the field.

Culinary walks

Exploring a city through its eateries, markets, and restaurants is probably one of the most unique and enjoyable ways to become acquainted with a culture. Culinary Backstreets hosts culinary walks in Istanbul that have become extremely popular and allow participants to eat their way through Istanbul’s kebab restaurants, bazaars, meyhanes, neighborhoods, and much more.

Hiking in the Far Northeast

The area comprising Trabzon and Rize along the Black Sea can be most readily compared to the Alps, with beautiful mountains, green valleys, and small mountain cabins all around. For nature lovers, Turkey’s Far Northeast is a truly unique experience because of its utter detachment from city life within unspoiled nature. One of the area’s most visited spots is the Sumela Monastery , a Greek Orthodox monastery within the Pontic Mountains.

Pamukkale Turkey hot springs

During our three weeks in Turkey, we posted lots of wanderlust-inducing pictures on our Instagram account of all the places to visit in Turkey and have been shocked by the amount of messages we’ve received from followers.

The basic gist is this:

Reader: “Where are you?! It looks so beautiful!”

Us: “Still in Turkey!”

Reader: “Really? I had no idea there were so many things to do in Turkey!”

And you know what? Turkey has surprised us too.

We didn’t know much about this country before we booked our flight, but it has quickly become one of our favorites.

Turkey is a country where East meets West and history meets adventure. The people are welcoming, the cuisine is delightful, the culture has depth.

  • Butterfly Valley

Keep reading for more detailed information on each of these cities and more ideas for cool places to visit and things to do in Turkey.

1. Discover Istanbul

The gateway between the East and West

Istanbul Turkey mosque

The gateway between the East and the West, and the only city in the world that can claim residence on two separate continents, Istanbul is truly a one-of-a-kind city.

With two major airports and direct flights to cities all over the world, it’s likely to be your entry point when visiting Turkey. We highly suggest you take advantage and stay a few days (or more if your schedule allows!).

While it is a large city—it’s spread out over two continents after all—most of the major highlights of Istanbul can be visited on a walking tour combined with some public transportation.

Spend some time learning about the progression of this historically significant city, which was at the seat of the Ottoman Empire. The Old City is filled with historical attractions while greater Istanbul is a modern cosmopolitan gem, and a quick ferry across the Bosphorus will take you to a haven of cafes and parks in an entirely different atmosphere.

The property features 61 rooms, an onsite restaurant and spa, embracing all aspects of luxury hospitality.

2. Take a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia

Ethereal, fairytale-like region famous for hot air balloon flights

Cappadocia hot air balloons Turkey

Cappadocia is a place that appears to have been plucked straight from a fairytale . The ethereal landscape dotted with formations dubbed as ‘fairy chimneys’ by the locals is made even more magical every morning as colorful hot air balloons dance across the sky.

What was once a settlement of cave-dwellers is now a popular tourist destination in central Turkey. Cappadocia is famous for its peculiar rock formations , open air museums, and is practically synonymous with hot air ballooning—one of the best things to do in Turkey!

How to get to cappadocia.

Cappadocia has two major airports in the region, Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) and Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR). Both are under a 1.5 hour drive from Goreme.

Depending on the season you can fly into Cappadocia for less than $100 USD, round-trip from Istanbul on Turkish Airlines.

Another option would be to take a bus from Istanbul or from other cities in Western Turkey for about 200 TL (around $20 USD).

Where to stay in Cappadocia

We have an entire article on the best Cappadocia Cave Hotels – from budget to luxury. For more options, check out the where to stay section of our Cappadocia article.

Here are a few top recommendations for different budgets:

Falcon Cave Suites Cappadocia

Budget recommendation: Falcon Cave Suites

An incredible value at around $25 USD per night (price can vary based on time of year). The room isn’t a cave per se , but is made of stone bricks and has a high, arched ceiling which makes it feel almost as if you’re in a cave. The room itself has lots of natural light and a spacious bathroom with a Jacuzzi pool (yes please!). The breakfast is good and the family who runs this hotel is nice, though their English is minimal.

Local Cave House Hotel Cappadocia

Mid-range budget: Local Cave House Hotel

One of the most gorgeous pools in Göreme, Local Cave House is a boutique property that offers cave suites for double, triple and family-sized occupancy. Carved into the cliffside in Göreme, the hotel features a beautiful terrace with swimming pool and hookah lounge. Daily continental breakfast is included with your stay.

Sacred House Hotel (Booking)

Splurge: Sacred House

Possibly the most beautifully decorated boutique hotel I’ve ever seen. This hotel is in a 250-year-old Greek mansion where its history is embedded in the luxurious design. Everything from the indoor winter garden lounge area to the opulent indoor swimming pool and spa is simply divine.

3. Take a dip in thermal hot springs in Pamukkale

Surreal terraced hot spring pools filled with milky-blue waters

Pamukkale Turkey hot springs

Pamukkale means “cotton castle” in Turkish and you can see why. The white mineral deposits (travertines) make it look as if you’re stepping on a cotton-covered hill, but the tepid water will tell you otherwise.

Situated in southwestern Turkey, the terraced pools that make up Pamukkale look surreal in pictures and even more dreamlike in person .

This is one of the most epic places to visit in Turkey, so it’s no wonder this beautiful place has become quite the popular tourist attraction.

Get there early to avoid the crowds (it’s best to stay overnight!) while soaking, splashing and relaxing in these unique springs. And when your fingers have turned pruney, head to the top of the hill where you can explore the ancient ruins of Hierapolis .

Top things to do in Pamukkale, Turkey

Pamukkale Turkey

  • Cost: 50 TL (~$8 USD) to enter
  • Cost: 100 TL (~$16 USD) to enter
  • Discover the ancient ruins of Hierapolis
  • Check out Hierapolis Archeological Museum

How to get to Pamukkale

You can catch a bus from Istanbul to Denizli , which will take around 9-10 hours. Consider getting an overnight bus to catch up on time.

From Denizli, you will need to get on a minibus to complete the 30 min drive to Pamukkale. Both Pamukkale Bus Company and Metro Bus Company offer regular routes between the two cities.

Another option would be to rent a car in Istanbul and make the 6 hour drive.

Where to stay in Pamukkale

When staying in Pamukkale, you won’t have a ton of options. But new hotels are popping up every year. Here are a few highly-rated recommendations.

Pamukkale Melrose Viewpoint Suites (Booking)

Budget option: Pamukkale Melrose Viewpoint Suites

Offering a swimming pool, sun terrace and daily breakfast, you’ll have a hard time finding a better option for your budget in Pamukkale. Plus they have room sizes to fit families and larger groups.

Venus Suite Hotel (Booking)

Mid range budget: Venus Suite Hotel

At a slightly higher price point, this all-suite hotel was completely renovated in 2015. This is a great option with updated facilities and a range of rooms to fit different budgets.

Pamukkale Whiteheaven Suite Hotel (Booking)

Splurge: Pamukkale Whitehaven Suite Hotel

This highly-rated property is one of the most expensive hotels in the area, but still quite reasonable on the budget. The Travertines are just 500 meters away, making it a great place to base yourself for a night or two.

4. Hit the beaches in Antalya

Resort city on the southern coast known as the “capital of tourism” in Turkey

Antalya Turkey_STOCK-U (Nihat Sinan Erul)

One of the can’t-miss things to do in Turkey is take advantage of the beaches. With 5,000+ miles of coastline (one of the things Turkey is most famous for ), how could you not!?

The southwestern coast of Turkey, with its turquoise blue waters , white sandy beaches and charming coastal towns, is known as the Turkish Riviera, or better as “The Turquoise Coast.” Antalya sits as the hub of this region and is considered the “Gateway to Turkey’s Mediterranean Coast.”

A resort city with white sand beaches and fancy hotels surrounding the yacht-filled Old Harbor, Antalya is one of the best places to visit in Turkey if you’re looking for relaxation and beachy vibes.

Top things to do in Antalya, Turkey

Antalya Turkey harbor

Whether you only have a couple of days or you have enough time to whip up a 4 day Antalya itinerary , you’ll find plenty of things to do in this resort town.

  • Take a boat ride to Duden Waterfalls
  • Explore the Old Town of Kaleiçi
  • Take the cable car up Tunek Tepe to take in the views
  • Hit the beach for some fun in the sun
  • Hike part of the Lycian Way
  • Have lunch overlooking the Old Harbor

How to get to Antalya

The best way to get there is by flying into the Antalya International Airport (AYT). Check out Turkish Airlines for some of the best deals on direct flights from Istanbul and other major cities in Turkey.

Where to stay in Antalya

Kaleiçi is the Old Town city center and best place to stay to be near all the action. If you’re looking to stay near the beach with more affordable rates, Konyaalti Beach is a good bet.

Alternatively, you can venture further down the coast to find miles of pristine beach with some ultra-luxe beach resorts.

BE BOLD HOSTEL (Booking)

Budget recommendation: Be Bold Hostel

A vibrant and lively atmosphere combined with comfortable accommodations. Friendly staff, social common areas, and a convenient location for exploring the city and beaches.

A luxurious and idyllic retreat where guests can enjoy world-class amenities, stunning golf courses, and pristine beaches. With its elegant design, impeccable service, and an array of dining options, the hotel offers a truly indulgent experience for travelers looking for luxury just down the coast from Antalya.

5. Fall in love with Kaş

A charming seaside town without all the tourists

Kas Turkey

This charming beach town may be known as Turkey’s premier scuba diving destination, but there is so much more to fall in love with here.

The oceanside gem of Kas has ancient ruins , hip restaurants and stunning beaches. And as an added bonus, it hasn’t quite caught the tourism boom and commercialization of some of the other well-known towns in the south.

Top things to do in Kas, Turkey

Kas Turkey Amphitheater

  • Spend the day soaking up some rays at a beachless beach club
  • Enjoy the small sliver of beach at Küçük Çakıl
  • Fill up on mezze at a cute restaurant in the Old Town
  • Climb the ruins of the Hellenistic Amphitheater to watch the sunset
  • Take a day trip to Meis Island, Greece (just a 45 minute ferry ride!)
  • Make your way to Kaputas Beach (see #18), a 45 minute drive up the coast

How to get to Kas

Kas Turkey

Located on Turkey’s Southern Mediterranean Coast, the best way to reach Kas is by flying into the Antalya airport (AYT) and taking a shuttle. The ride is just 3 hours along a beautiful stretch of coastline.

Alternatively, you could fly into Dalaman Airport (DLM), which is just 2.5 hours to the northwest, and take a bus or a shuttle.

Where to stay in Kas

Kas is a town built right into the hillside, so there are lots of stairs and steep hills if you’re not staying right on the shore. Keep this in mind when booking.

WhiteHouse (Airbnb)

Budget recommendation: White House Studio Apartment

This highly-rated studio apartment on Airbnb is just 100 meters from the seaside making it an ideal stay for travelers looking for a more homey feel in Kas. Amenities include a kitchen, in-unit washer, A/C and wifi.

Hotel Begonvil (Booking)

Mid-range budget: Hotel Begonvil

A charming boutique hotel nestled in the heart of the picturesque town. This hotel features comfortable rooms, a warm atmosphere, and a rooftop terrace boasting panoramic views.

Hill House (Booking)

Splurge: Hill House

This adults-only accommodation offers modern suites with sea views and other incredible amenities in the heart of Kas. The highly-rated property has received great reviews for cleanliness, comfort and wifi.

6. Go paragliding over Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon

Home of the blue lagoon of Ölüdeniz Tabiat Parkı and Belcekız Beach

paragliding over Oludeniz Turkey

In Turkish, Ölüdeniz translates to dead sea , which refers to the ultra calm waters of the surrounding area (including the famous Blue Lagoon). This makes for the perfect destination for beach-goers, especially for families with little ones.

While the sea is incredible, there is one truly spectacular way to experience the unique landscape of Oludeniz…

Paragliding is perhaps the closest you can get to the feeling of flying without actually sprouting wings. Ölüdeniz gained fame when Daniel Craig ran off a cliff in the movie Skyfall. If James Bond can do it, so can we! Err… right?

Make like James Bond and give paragliding a try in this picturesque seaside town . You can book a paragliding tour with Get Your Guide which includes an experienced instructor, transportation and extreme sports insurance.

If soaring above the lush cliffs that hug the Mediterranean isn’t adventurous enough for you, you can ask your guide if you can pilot for an extra adrenaline rush! This was a first for both of us, and I think it’s safe to say we were spoiled by the views.

Our experience

paragliding over Oludeniz Turkey

We had a great time seeing Oludeniz from above and think it is one of the most beautiful places to go paragliding in the world. That said, we didn’t love the town itself. We found it to be extremely touristy, overpriced and dare we say… trashy.

We definitely weren’t feeling the vibe, and it was the only town in Turkey we actually disliked. If you are in the south of the country and want to paraglide, we would highly recommend making a stop there to go paragliding over these blue waters, but not for much longer than a day.

Another spot to go paragliding in Turkey is in Alanya, on the southern coast. There are plenty of things to do in Alanya and it is worth a spot while traveling around Turkey.

Top things to do in Ölüdeniz, Turkey

  • Paraglide over the famous Blue Lagoon
  • Go swimming in the Blue Lagoon
  • Try scuba diving to some unique archeological dive sites
  • Explore the surrounding small coves and islands on a boat trip
  • Ride the Babadag Mountain cable car to the top for 360-degree views
  • Experience the nightlife

How to get to Ölüdeniz

We took a bus from nearby Antalya , a resort town on the south coast. It was about a 3.5-hour trip and cost us about 20 TL (around $6 USD).

Where to stay near Ölüdeniz

The best accommodation in Oludeniz will be as near the beach and Blue Lagoon as you can get. The city center will offer more options and a range of budgets. Otherwise, you can stay in nearby Fethiye (see #12)  and come to the Blue Lagoon for the day.

The Pearl Ölüdeniz (Booking)

Mid-range budget recommendation: The Pearl Ölüdeniz

A stunning property near Oludeniz Beach that offers guests a luxurious and tranquil retreat. The hotel features elegant design, spacious rooms, and a range of top-notch amenities including a pool and spa.

7. Party the night away in Bodrum

Dubbed the “St. Tropez of Turkey”

Bodrum Turkey

The city of Bodrum is a summer hot spot and idyllic beach destination on the turquoise blue Aegean coast.

Whether you prefer live music or a hopping club, there is no shortage of nightlife in this coastal paradise . Party the night away and then sleep it off while you soak up some rays on the beach or at one of the many infinity pools in the area.

Don’t worry though…Bodrum is not just for partiers. There is plenty of culture and history to be soaked up as well.

Top things to do in Bodrum, Turkey

  • Get into the nightlife
  • Check out the Bodrum Castle , a medieval fortress completed in the 4th century B.C.
  • See the ruins of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus , one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
  • Try the traditional stuffed muscles , a local street food favorite
  • Taste fresh olives made in the 100-year-old-factory in Old Town
  • Watch local artisans weave Turkish carpets at the local market

How to get to Bodrum

Bodrum Castle

Bodrum has an international airport (BJV) with direct flights from Istanbul and other European and Asian cities.

You can also take a bus from other major cities in Turkey, rent a car and drive yourself.

Alternatively, you can arrive by sea! There are daily ferries from the Greek islands of Cos and Rhodes that make their way into Bodrum.

Where to stay in Bodrum

For a city that’s centered around its harbor, you’ll want to stay close to the coast if you want to be in the center of the action.

K Studio (Booking)

Budget recommendation: K Studio

You cannot beat the price on this highly-rated studio in Bodrum city. Located less than 2 km from the beach, this air conditioned studio is the perfect retreat for travelers on a budget.

Su Hotel (Booking)

Mid-range budget: Su Hotel & Cottages

Staying here will give you more of an apartment feel. You can book one and two bedroom places with small kitchenettes.

Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay Bodrum (Booking)

Splurge: Kempinski Barbaros Bay Bodrum

A luxurious seaside retreat that epitomizes elegance and tranquility, offering guests breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, pristine private beaches, and world-class amenities. Perched on a cliffside, the luxurious resort overlooks Barbados Bay on the Bodrum Peninsula.

The Bodrum EDITION (Booking)

Ultra-Splurge: The Bodrum Edition

Part of the Edition boutique hotel collection. With stunning views of the Aegean Sea, you’ll get the five-star treatment at this luxury establishment.

8. Explore magical Butterfly Valley

Enchanted valley home to diverse butterfly species

Butterfly Valley Turkey

Wander amongst wildflowers, fruit trees and wild goats in this enchanted valley that will have you wondering if you’ve stepped into a storybook paradise that’s been frozen in time.

14. Kayak over the ruins of Kekova

Underwater city with submerged structures ancient artifacts

unique tours turkey

Turkey has an incredible amount of ancient ruins , and is less touristy than its popular neighbors, Italy and Greece. One of the areas with a high concentration of ruins is a region along the south coast that forms the ‘Lycian Way.’

Don’t expect to look down and see a whole city with recognizable storefronts and homes. This isn’t a movie, but it’s impressive nonetheless. The clear water allows you to see remains of a town that was flooded after an earthquake.

Ruins still stand on the shore as well, and are reminders of those who called the land home.

The kayak trip will stop at the charming little town of Kalekoy, which can only be reached by boat. Spend a few hours in the sun enjoying a leisurely lunch, hiking to some hilltop ruins, snorkeling with turtles and devouring the town’s famous goat milk ice cream.

Tip: The kayak trip was relaxed and not very difficult or tiring compared with other sea kayaking we’ve done. We would highly recommend taking a kayak trip because it’s an environmentally friendly way to explore and group size is small; but if it’s just not your thing, you can also see the sunken city of Kekova by boat.

15. Roast marshmallows over the eternal flame of the Chimera

Mesmerizing natural phenomenon where flames emerge from the earth

eternal flame of the Chimera Turkey

The quiet seaside town of Olympos is known for its ruins, a laidback pebbly beach and the eternal flames called the Chimera.

This grouping of flames burns naturally in the Cirali mountains and they are rumored to have been seen by ships at sea for hundreds of years.

The scientific explanation is that the flames are caused by methane gas oozing from the mountain’s crevices. While they are constantly burning, the time of year and the barometric pressure can make them vary in size.

How to get to Chimera

eternal flame of the Chimera Turkey

Once the sun has set, take a shuttle to the edge of the mountain, and once you get out of the vehicle you’re on your own. Hike about 30 minutes up the steep and wooded mountainside, enjoying serenity and spectacular stars.

Eventually you’ll reach a clearing where flames emerge from the rocky ground, and this is where you’ll stop. Enjoy a peaceful night on your own in the moonlight, or make friends with others gathered around the flames by offering to share marshmallows!

The campfire vibes are strong on this mountain with endless flames, and you may be tempted to stay all night. Just don’t miss your return ride to Olympos because it’s a long walk back!

Tip: Buy marshmallows, sticks and perhaps wine in town to bring along! We didn’t think of this, but met a couple that was kind enough to share with us, and it really made the experience special. Be sure not to leave any trash if you decide to do this.

What to pack for visiting Chimera

Bringing a blanket would have made our time camped out in front of the flames even more comfortable. Also, wear sturdy shoes, as the hike is on uneven ground in the dark.

Your driver should provide you with a flashlight, but it’s never a bad idea to come prepared with your own. Mine didn’t work, so I was glad I had my own headlamp.

Bus travel in Turkey is known for its comfort, with many buses offering amenities such as air conditioning, reclining seats, and onboard entertainment. An extensive network of bus companies and routes makes traveling by bus throughout Turkey convenient, affordable, and widely accessible.

Both local buses and long-distance coaches connect major cities, towns, and even remote areas. Bus terminals, known as otogar , can be found in most towns and cities, serving as hubs for arrivals and departures.

By airplane

For those seeking a faster mode of transportation, domestic flights in Turkey are generally pretty affordable. Major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Antalya have multiple airports, allowing travelers to conveniently reach their desired destinations.

Domestic flights offer the advantage of saving time, particularly when covering long distances, and are a popular choice for those wanting to explore different regions of Turkey within a limited timeframe.

The Turkish State Railways (TCDD) operates a comprehensive train network that connects various cities and regions. Traveling by train allows passengers to enjoy scenic views of the countryside and offers a relaxed and comfortable journey.

Overnight sleeper trains are available for longer distances, providing an opportunity to rest and arrive at the destination refreshed. The high-speed train service, known as the “YHT” (Yüksek Hızlı Tren), connects major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Eskişehir.

Tips for visiting Turkey

Coast of Turkey

Before you plan a trip to Turkey, there are a few things you should keep in mind…

  • However, it is good to know that unlike in other predominantly Muslim countries, in Turkey you don’t have to cover up entirely. It is not uncommon for women to show their knees or shoulders in public.

Ephesus (Efes) is one of the greatest ancient sites in the Mediterranean. During its heyday in the first century BC, it was the second-largest city in the world, with only Rome commanding more power. Many reconstructed structures and ruins, including the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, can be seen here.   The Basics This ancient city is home to an incredible number of ruins in varying states. The site is best explored with a guide who can help shed light on the function and significance of the various structures. Guided tours of the site depart from Istanbul, Izmir, Bodrum, Selçuk, and Kuşadasi.

A holy shrine to the supposed death place of St. Mary, the House of the Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana Evi) in Ephesus is a standing testament to the home of the beloved mother of Jesus (Meryem Ana or Meryemana in Turkish). Many believe that the house was indeed the place where she spent her final days, and today you can visit the restored stone house, which now serves as a chapel. Serving as sacred territory for Christians and Muslims alike, the Virgin Mary's House has called hundreds of thousands of visitors and pilgrims since its discovery in the 19th-century. Remnants of the chapel date as far back as the 6th-century, and serves as the place where its caretakers, the Lazarist Fathers, conduct mass every day. Despite the altar placed within, the house still contains a bedroom and kitchen, decorated with pictures of Mary and candles. Many believe that the spring that runs beneath St. Mary's House is blessed and possesses the power to heal, and once you enter the house, you can see left behind crutches and other apparatus’ that were apparently left behind amid miracles.

The Temple of Artemis, or Artemision, was a Greek temple in present-day Turkey dedicated to the goddess Artemis. It was one of the original seven wonders of the ancient world. It was built not far from Ephesus just outside the present-day town of Selcuk. The temple was completely rebuilt several times throughout history after being destroyed on multiple occasions by both nature and human factors. Little remains of the temple in its original location today since archeologists brought much of the ruins to the British Museum.  The Temple of Artemis is only a couple of miles from Ephesus, making it an easy attraction to visit. Visitors can still see one tall column and a handful of marble pieces from the foundations of the structure, and the historical location is fascinating.

A visit to St. John’s Basilica allows a glimpse into the history of this ancient site, built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the sixth century. It is believed that the church sits on the burial grounds of John the Apostle and was designed in the shape of a cross. At its completion, it was covered by six domes, with many of the walls presumably once covered in frescoes.  As nearby Ephesus began to lose significance, the Basilica of St. John was converted into a mosque, hit by an earthquake and completely destroyed by a Mongol army in 1402. All that remains today are various bricks and stones alongside the marble columns that once held up the structure, but recent restoration gives visitors the context to visualize and understand its former status and significance.

Everything You Need to Know About Raising Pet Turkeys

Looking for a giant pet bird that cuddles, talks, and sticks by your side? Meet the pet turkey. These intelligent, friendly birds boast unique personalities and make entertaining companions. However, due to their substantial size, they demand ample space. So, before you rush to pick your feathered friend, let's explore what keeps these magnificent birds happy and healthy in your home. Perhaps it's "tweet" destiny!

First: Can You Have a Turkey as a Pet?

Turkeys can make incredible pets for the right household. Not only are they friendly, but the females often love cuddling and being petted. A lot of owners describe them as being dog-like. But like a dog, certain housing restrictions apply. Find out whether your local laws and ordinances, neighborhoods, and your property will be right for this particular feathered friend.

1. Are Turkeys Legal in Your Area?

First, research whether you can legally have a turkey as a pet where you live. Check with your city's animal control department to find out about regulations regarding any zoning restrictions and raising livestock. You may find you're allowed to keep them but must adhere to guidelines regarding the housing of the birds and distance from your neighbors.

2. What Will Your Neighbors Think?

Once you've established that you can legally raise turkeys in your backyard, the next important consideration is your neighbors. Turkeys are not quiet birds, and if you plan on building your turkey enclosure right next to a neighboring house, that's likely to cause friction. Talk to any neighbors who may be affected by the noise first to make sure that everyone is satisfied with how you will be keeping the turkeys on your property.

3. Do You Have Enough Space?

You'll need a fenced-in area that is at least 6 feet high to keep them from roaming. You may even need to cover their area with wire or netting, as many turkeys can easily fly over a fence that high. Your pen should have at least 6 square feet of space per turkey, though offering them more space to roam is preferable, as long as you can make sure their area is secure.

Need to Know A good rule of thumb is to have at least  6 square feet of space per bird , and you will need at least two turkeys in your flock.

Your turkeys will also need to have a place to stay during inclement weather and at night to keep them safe from predators. You can create something as simple as a modified pre-designed garden shed. To get an idea of space, a typical 6-foot by 8-foot shed would accommodate about six turkeys, though this is the minimum size, and larger will make your turkeys happier.

Types of Turkeys

There are several breeds of turkeys that are commonly kept as both pets and raised as livestock. Domestic turkeys are larger than "heritage turkeys," which tend to look more like wild turkeys. This makes sense when you consider that domestic turkeys have been bred over time to have larger breasts for food purposes compared to their leaner ancestors. While there are many similarities, there are few differences between the broad types.

Where to Get Pet Turkeys

When you're ready to raise turkeys and have your home set up, there are a few different places you can get your new pet turkeys.

  • Breeders : There are breeders who sell turkeys online, such as Cackle Hatchery and Murray McMurray Hatchery . They will ship baby and young turkeys to you if you live within the continental United States.
  • Farm supply stores : You can also get live turkeys from farm supply chains like Tractor Supply .
  • Local farms : Check with any local independent farm and agricultural supply stores and local farms in your area, as many will sell poults as well as toms and hens if they have some available.
  • Shelters and rescues : Check with your local shelter or national rescue platforms, like Petfinder . If you live in an area with a lot of farms, you may find that your local animal shelter takes in livestock like turkeys and chickens. They may also be able to point you to private rescues and farm sanctuaries local to you that take in turkeys.
  • Re-homing sites :  Pet Turkeys runs an informational website for people who want to keep turkeys as pets and also places that rescue turkeys and other poultry and re-home them into pet-only homes. They also raise turkeys to place in homes. They are located in Central Florida.
Quick Tip Trying to decide between a pet turkey and a pet chicken ? Turkeys are generally more tranquil and resilient than chickens.

Housing Turkeys

Along with a safe space to roam, your turkey will need housing. You can purchase a 6-foot by 8-foot or larger shed to keep your turkeys in. Other considerations for housing:

  • Ventilation: The shed will need to be ventilated, which you can do on your own by cutting a small area in the wall and covering it with wire or mesh screens. This area should be higher up near the roof to keep predators from using it as a way to get in.
  • Perches: Provide a perch for the turkeys, which can be done with some boards to make shelves. Turkeys need a wide space for perching because they're so large and need to place the weight of their chests onto the perch when resting.
  • Nesting boxes : Turkey hens will need nest boxes for egg-laying.
  • Grass: Outside of the shed, your turkeys will need a grassy place to roam and ideally another area to perch in the outdoors.
  • Enclosure: Many turkeys can fly, even if their wings are clipped, so you may need to keep their roaming area fully enclosed with some type of open-wire cover to prevent them from flying off and visiting the neighbors. It will also help keep larger predators out of your yard.

Turkey Bedding

Your turkey shed should have some type of bedding on the ground to keep moisture away from the turkeys and to protect them from hurting their feet. Pinewood shavings work well for this, or you can use hay. It's important to stick with a regular cleaning schedule to keep their shavings or hay free of their urine and feces so the birds stay healthy. Spot clean daily and entirely change the bedding at least once each week.

Even though there are plenty of good bedding options, there are a few you'll want to stay away from. Do not use cedar shavings, as these are toxic to turkeys, and don't use sawdust or newspapers, as this can harm the legs of younger turkeys. Not to mention, they may also try to eat the sawdust.

Feeding Your Pet Turkey

Feeding your turkeys the proper diet is essential for their health. Turkeys are messy eaters, so the first thing to know about feeding them is to use a self-feeder. This will allow them to get only a bit of food at time to cut down on mess and prevent overeating. Pet turkeys should eat pellets that are designed for other poultry, such as chickens .  Pick a diet for their life stage to make sure they get the appropriate protein and calcium levels:

  • Feed young turkeys — or poults — under eight weeks of age a turkey starter pellets.
  • Feed poults between nine and 14 weeks turkey grower pellets.
  • Feed older poults, between the ages of 14 weeks and adulthood (about five months old) turkey finisher pellets.
  • Feed adult turkeys a maintenance diet.

Supplements

It's beneficial to supplement your turkeys' diet with fruits and vegetables, such as leafy greens, kale, grapes, and berries. Some turkeys enjoy eating insects like crickets. And if you want your turkey hens to lay eggs, you may need to supplement their diet with calcium. Crushed oyster shells is a great option for this and can be purchased online and at agricultural feed stores.

Because turkeys don't have teeth, they need to grind their food within their gizzard . Grit is an important part of this process. Turkeys who have free range in a natural environment will usually pick up these tiny stones while they forage, but it's also wise to offer your turkey grit in case they need it. Place a grit container near their self-feeder when they enter their grower stage.

Quick Tip Make sure your turkey has a constant supply of water, although you'll probably want to use watering bottles made for poultry, as turkeys can easily fall into a bowl of water and even drown!

Raising Turkey Poults

If your hens will be laying eggs and raising young turkeys, you will need to be prepared for the care of their babies. This means having a heat lamp in the turkey shed to keep the newly hatched babies at a temperature between 95°F and 100°F (35°C to 38°C). Expect to keep the area heated for at least the first six weeks of their life, unless you live in a colder climate.

Your lamp also needs to be situated so that the birds can move around and away from the heat if they get too hot. You will find that young turkeys are far needier than other types of poultry and will need training to understand where to eat, where to drink, and where to go outside. While they can be a lot of work, they're also known for being affectionate and almost puppy-like.

Turkey Health Concerns

Turkeys have a lifespan of about 3 to 7 years, though some can live only 2 years and others as long as 10. Learning about the potential diseases these birds are susceptible to can help you put preventive care into action and keep an eye out for any early symptoms of illness. Pet turkeys are susceptible to several medical conditions, including:

  • Histomoniasis Meleagridis , also known as " blackhead disease ," is caused by a parasite and can be deadly to an entire flock. Unfortunately, there's no known cure, but you can prevent it. Chickens are a known carrier of the protozoan that spreads this disease, so if you're raising chickens and turkeys together, proper sanitation is very important to keep this dreaded disease away.
  • Turkey or fowlpox is a viral disease that causes lesions on the skin and in the mouth and upper gastrointestinal tract. While it's uncomfortable, it's usually not fatal.
  • Turkey rhinotracheitis is a disease that is particularly bad for poults and involves respiratory problems. It needs antibiotic treatment.
  • Swollen head syndrome involves swelling and red eyes and tear ducts as well swelling of the head, along with respiratory distress. There are no vaccines for the disease or cures, although antibiotics can help in some cases.
  • Staph infections include the condition known as "bumblefoot." Staph infections can lead to lameness, lethargy, fever, and physical pain. It can also lead to arthritis and severe diarrhea.
  • Parasites including gape worms and intestinal worms commonly affect turkeys. Gape worms affect the bird's trachea and cause difficulty breathing. Intestinal worms such as capillaria, ascaridia, and heterakis attack the gastrointestinal tract and can cause weight loss, diarrhea, and even lead to conditions like Blackhead disease.

Questions to Ask Your Turkey’s Vet

Turkeys are pretty unique pets, which means you’ll need to find a veterinarian that’s familiar with these birds. Look for an exotic veterinarian who has experience seeing and treating turkeys. When you find a vet, make sure to ask them these questions at your first visit:

  • What preventive measures (supplements, vaccines, lifestyle changes, etc.) should I take to keep my turkey healthy?
  • Am I feeding my pet turkey the right diet?
  • What should I do if I have an emergency and you’re closed?

FAQ on Owning a Pet Turkey

You’ve got questions, we have answers.

  • Do turkeys make good pets for children? Turkeys can form a strong bond with your children, and once that bond is established, they'll appreciate spending more time with you and your family. These pets also tend to follow children and their families around the yard as they play or do chores once the bond is established.
  • Do pet turkeys do well alone? Turkeys are social birds, so they generally do best with at least one other turkey as a companion.
  • Do I need a turkey sitter when I go out of town?  Turkeys need to have regular daily care, so if you are someone who travels, make sure that you have someone who can fill in for you when you're gone. For example, a professional pet sitter who is experienced with turkeys can be a great asset to have, or you can offer to educate a pet sitter who is willing to learn more about their care to fill in for you when you're gone.

Raising Turkeys at Home as Pets

Turkeys require a lot of work and a great deal of space, so they're not a good choice if you have a small backyard and live in a suburb with neighbors close by. But if you do have adequate space and can legally own them in your area, they can make wonderful, intelligent pets that will surprise you with their unique personalities and friendly nature.
