Twickenham Stadium Tour and Museum

I went to Twickenham for a tour of the stadium and to visit the World Rugby Museum. We were there from 11.00 am until around 2.45 pm. The tour started at 11.30 so we started in the Museum for around 20 minutes before returning for the tour. The tour guide, Mike was superb. Extremely knowledgeable about the stadium and happy to answer any questions the group had. We visited several parts of the stadium including the Council Offices, President's Suite, Royal Box and pitch-side. This took around 75 minutes. We returned to the museum and spent an enjoyable time wandering through learning more about the history of the world game. Well worth a visit if you like rugby and it doesn't matter which team or country you support. After all, it is the World Rugby Museum!

Saw England v Fiji experience spoiled by rules that are not followed. Small bags and no vaping, A guy in the row behind me had a Hugh ruck sack as did many other people he went for beer at least 4 times during the match with his ruck sack on, every time he smacked me on the back of the head. Vaping two girls in front of us and one beside us, my wife has recently had a bowel cancer op so not a pleasant time for her to have vape puffed over her.

Poor organization, absolute chaos as everyone now gets a body pat down resulting in extended bottle neck and delays. Worst Twickenham experience in 30 years.

Forced to take a rucksack with a raincoat and a pair of headphones in it to a bag deposit. Then took 90 minutes in a queue after the game to collect.

England v Wales hospitality Clubhouse Restaurant . Meal Five course over match . Excellent loads of booze coffee Food waitress new but attentive Drink waitress excellent Manager on the ball . Venue spot on , roomy Excellent all round .

Always a great experience. 10 minute walk from Twickenham train station. All seats have a great view and there's plenty of bars and food stalls outside. Get there early enough and you might even get a chance to see your team arriving. Can be manic when leaving but there are a lot of people doing the same thing. The official tour is thoroughly recommended as well.

Thrilling stadiums for 35 years … Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan at Twickenham Stadium, London.

Depeche Mode review – who knew synth-pop could be this colossal and life-affirming?

Twickenham Stadium, London Dave Gahan is a mic-spinning, limb-bending, theatrical marvel as the band gallop through decades’ worth of hits. And the presence of Andrew Fletcher, the keyboardist who died last year, is touchingly felt

D epeche Mode have been thrilling stadiums for 35 years now. Immortalised in their classic tour movie 101, their first ever megashow, at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, established rules of engagement which pertain to this day. You shall sing the Thatcher-baiting chorus of Everything Counts over and over while frontman Dave Gahan holds out his microphone. You shall follow Gahan’s cue to sway your arms from side to side during Never Let Me Down Again. Still, much has changed. The four young men from Essex who appeared on the cover of 101 like a synth-pop Beatles became first a trio and then, with the premature death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher last year, a duo. While drummer Christian Eigner and multi-instrumentalist Peter Gordeno, both in the touring fold since 1998, carry the sonic weight, it is hard not seeing Fletcher waving amiably from behind his synthesiser.

Death has been a driving concern for songwriter Martin Gore since the mid-80s – alongside sex, sin and guilt – but its presence is more deeply felt in material from their sombre new album Memento Mori. The video for Ghosts Again , their best single in many years, shows the duo playing chess in homage to The Seventh Seal, while the show’s key visual motif is a skull. Fletcher’s subtly animated face fills the screens during World in My Eyes, providing a necessary moment of phone-waving communal remembrance in a stadium where diehards in old tour T-shirts mingle with a refreshing number of younger converts.

Mutual appreciation … Martin Gore and Dave Gahan.

Most touchingly, Gahan and Gore seem to have rediscovered their appreciation for one another in their sixties. They don’t talk much (their defining hit, after all, is called Enjoy the Silence ) but their body language speaks volumes. Note the way Gahan returns to the stage for the end of Gore’s solo performance of Soul With Me’s blue-eyed R&B to express his enthusiasm, or how tenderly their voices mesh on an intimate encore of Waiting for the Night to greet the darkening sky. Given their candidly documented history of distance, this dramatisation of their rapprochement is enormously touching.

after newsletter promotion

Depeche Mode are weirdly prone to starting shows in first gear but once the video screens snap from black-and-white to colour for Everything Counts, they gallop through decades’ worth of hits with barely a detour. How they alone of their generation made synth-pop colossal still fascinates. The messianic techno-blues of Personal Jesus and I Feel You has obvious power but the monolithic mass of Never Let Me Down Again (recently heard in The Last of Us) or the Orwellian Stripped is still astounding: stadium rock without the rock. The pulsating glam-house of A Pain That I’m Used To is another sui generis highlight; Just Can’t Get Enough’s peppy teen bop a delightful outlier. Really though, their success on stage comes down to Gahan’s preposterous theatricality: louche, flouncy, Jaggerish. At first resembling a Vegas vampire before stripping down to a series of colourful waistcoats, he is a bum-waggling, mic-spinning, limb-bending, rabble-rousing marvel. In the midst of death, he explodes with life.

Depeche Mode live in London: tender and triumphant in Twickenham

Twickenham Stadium, June 17: the synth-pop legends return to the capital at the top of their game and bonded in fraternity

Anyone flying over London tonight is in for one hell of a sight. It’s stadium gig season, with Harry Styles at Wembley, Arctic Monkeys playing north London’s Emirates Stadium, and we’re in the distant posh suburbia of Twickenham for Depeche Mode . Three acts in very different stages of their career, but there’s a very present hunger for this particular mega-show.

The Essex synth pop legends are playing their first show in the capital in nearly six years, their first since losing Andy Fletcher , the renewed interest from the acclaimed 2023 album ‘ Memento Mori ’ and old favourite ‘ Never Let Me Down’ blowing up streaming from its inclusion in The Last Of Us . Fans of all ages in varying degrees of goth are expecting a statement gig.

There’s an almost false start feeling to opener ‘My Cosmos Is Mine’, its spacey ambitions not quite reaching the distant corners of the cavernous Twickenham Stadium, but the Gahan-penned Kraftwerk -indebted punchy pop gem of ‘Wagging Tongue’ soon lifts the mood as the frontman (resplendent in silky black and electric blue waistcoat) endlessly twirls – part ballerina, part vampire, part sexed-up snooker player. His charisma is everything. The first bona fide classic comes next with ‘Walking In My Shoes’, as Gahan takes a beat to show off his fetching white leather boots.

Coldplay might insert LEDs into your gums while Muse recreate War Of The Worlds with some balls-out bombast , but there’s an effortless cool to Depeche Mode’s stadium approach. The Anton Corbijn stage design is sparse and simple, with just the giant M lettering of the new record and some tastefully simple visuals, leaving everything else down to the songs and personality with no pyro or pratting about.

They may be demigods to their leather-clad cult, but tonight Depeche Mode have never seemed so human. “The beautiful angelic sound of Mr Martin Gore, in London town,” beams Gahan after his bandmate takes the lead for the artful musical theatre of ‘A Question Of Lust’ and ‘Soul With Me’. The macabre spectre that haunts ‘Memento Mori’ emerges for the pop perfection of ‘Ghosts Again’, now received like an old favourite’, before the face of the dearly departed Fletch later lights up the screens for ‘World In My Eyes’. “Let’s hear it London, Mr Andrew Fletcher”, offers Gahan to a rapturous response.

The famously fractious tensions in the band seem to have given way to fraternity, never more heartwarming than during the pally wedding dancing between members that closes the monolithic ‘Enjoy The Silence’, or the tender hug they share after Gahan and Gore’s duet on ‘Waiting For The Night’.

What ultimately hits the hardest is the generosity of bangers and the graceful energy they arrive with. Look at that setlist: the bittersweet euphoria of ‘Everything Counts’, the furious stomp of ‘I Feel You’, a gnarly outing of ‘Wrong’, the Jacques Lu Cont dancey swagger of ‘A Pain That I’m Used To’, and that encore? ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ into ‘Never Let Me Down Again’ into ‘Personal Jesus’? Come on. We’re in sexy goth heaven. You feel spoiled as an audience member, and we’d be lucky if this good feeling and compulsion of Depeche Mode’s current purple streak continues for years to come.

Bill Sweeney: Red Roses tickets at Twickenham are too cheap

It cost a family of four just £50 to watch England dismantle Ireland at Twickenham – a bargain compared to the price for men’s matches

England's Maddie Feaunati scores a try for England during the Guinness Women's Six Nations 2024 match between England and Ireland at Twickenham Stadium on April 20, 2024 in London, England

Bill Sweeney, the Rugby Football Union chief executive, believes Red Roses tickets are “probably priced too cheaply” given the rising levels of interest in the team and their unrivalled Grand Slam success .

England were crowned Grand Slam champions for a third consecutive year after beating France in Bordeaux, capping off an impressive Six Nations campaign studded by record attendances and an entertaining style of attacking rugby.

The Red Roses attracted a crowd of 19,705 for their second-round hammering over Wales – a record attendance for a women’s Test outside of Twickenham – before 48,778 watched their rout of Ireland at the home of English rugby .

The RFU has come under fire for spiralling ticket prices for England men’s games – top tickets to watch Steve Borthwick’s side take on the All Blacks in November cost an eye-watering £229 – sparking fears that fans are being priced out of the game.

RFU Chief Executive Officer Bill Sweeney during the Guinness Women's Six Nations 2024 match between England and Ireland at Twickenham Stadium on April 20, 2024 in London, England

With their significantly lower value, women’s tickets are a key part of the union’s strategy to make Twickenham more of a diverse and accessible place while growing the Red Roses’ fanbase.

It cost a family of four just £50 to watch England’s headline match at Twickenham against Ireland last week. The match – which attracted the second-highest attendance for a women’s Test – made a modest profit for the RFU and Sweeney hinted the union could revisit its Red Roses pricing strategy.

“At the moment, the gap between the average price for a ticket for a women’s match at Twickenham and a men’s match is massive,” said Sweeney. “It’s a huge gap. I think we’re probably priced [them] too cheaply at the moment, but we want to keep the fans coming in and we want them to enjoy that experience. I’m not saying we’re looking at a price increase but it is pretty low at the moment.”

The RFU is on a mission to grow the Red Roses’ fanbase as it builds towards a home women’s World Cup next year when it hopes to sell out Twickenham for the final.

England will host the Black Ferns this September at the home of English rugby in a warm-up for WXV which is expected to attract another bumper attendance, with Sweeney confirming the Red Roses are on course to be a profit-making entity for the union by 2030 at the latest.

England romped to colossal victories ahead of the Grand Slam showdown with the England head coach John Mitchell revealing the team’s multifaceted attack is part of the team’s wider aim to fill Twickenham.

The RFU has made a concerted effort to stage Red Roses matches around the country in recent years but it remains uncertain whether Twickenham will become the permanent home for the women’s team beyond the 2025 tournament.

England's players arrive ahead of the Six Nations international women's rugby union match between England and Ireland at Twickenham in south-west London on April 20, 2024

“It’s a difficult one, isn’t it? The reason we can’t take the men’s team around the country is because the financial hit to us is massive,” said Sweeney. “We have the stadium which costs a lot of money and we need to leverage that and make sure we get the right return at the moment.”

Despite the growing interest in the Red Roses, Sweeney admitted it was “difficult” for the RFU to attract female-centric brands and sponsors although remained optimistic that there would be an uptick in commercial interest as the team’s profile continues to grow.

He also insisted the women were no longer seen as “add-ons” - despite the fact that Umbro, the RFU’s official kit manufacturer for the past five years, is yet to provide sports bras for the Red Roses.

The team also boarded a 7am flight from Bordeaux on Sunday with budget airline EasyJet hours after their Grand Slam victory instead of flying with British Airways, the RFU’s official airline partner. Sweeney, however, insisted the decision was not financially motivated. “They’ve been in the competition for a long time and the BA flight was in the evening and the EasyJet flight was in the morning and it was their choice,” he explained. “They’d rather go in the morning and get home.”
