Trek Verve 1 Review: Is It A Good Bike To Have?

trek verve 1

Welcome to my Trek Verve 1 Review of 2020.

I tested nearly two dozen hybrid bikes over the years. The Trek Verve 1 is my go-to for any looking for an entry-level/Beginner hybrid bike.

Trust me, you do not want to buy the wrong product. It’s better to get it right the first time, or you’ll waste over $500 like I did when I start riding bikes.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Hybrid Bike

If you’re considering buying a hybrid bike, there are many important features to remember throughout the buying process. Here are some of the top ones to bear in mind.

Gears

Not every cyclist will need the same number of gears on their hybrid bike. When deciding on the number that’s right for you, consider your fitness levels and the terrain you’ll be riding on. For example, if you’ll regularly choose a route with lots of hills and rocky surfaces, you’ll want to opt for more gears. This is especially true with hills as you’ll need an extensive range of gears to help you climb and descend safely and easily.

On the other hand, if you’ll primarily be riding on flat terrain, you won’t require as many gears as those planning on climbing uphill . In fact, the fewer gears you have, the lighter your bike will be since it won’t have as many components. Bikes with only one speed can be perfect for some, especially as the rear hub enables you to coast like on a standard bike.

Suspension System

Next, consider what type of suspension system you’ll need. Commonly, many hybrid bikes don’t have a suspension. In fact, suspension forks add weight and can make pedaling more difficult. Plus, if most of your routes are on smooth pavements, you won’t benefit from this feature.

Alternatively, a front suspension helps to absorb impacts on the front wheel, making the overall ride smoother and more comfortable for the cyclist. This feature is certainly appropriate if you’ll be riding on off-road conditions and require the additional support.

Frame Materials

Frame Materials

The frame’s material has a huge impact on performance and durability. There are several to choose from, but the top three are aluminum, steel, and carbon fiber.

Aluminum is affordable, strong, stiff, and lightweight. With newer developments, this material can improve shock absorption to make riding on tough terrain smoother and avoid cyclists from feeling the impact.

Alternatively, steel is beneficial for its strength and durability, although it is heavier than aluminum. Steel is less expensive to make and purchase, which is ideal for those on a budget. Plus, this material can handle a larger maximum weight, making it great for commuters adding a basket and belongings to their bicycle.

Finally, carbon fiber is another preferred frame material. It’s lighter than aluminum and much stronger than steel, although, these beneficial factors can make it more expensive. Although, you can purchase a hybrid bike that features only carbon fiber forks or seat posts, rather than the entire frame is made of this.

Brake Type

Finally, it’s time to decide if you’ll choose rim brakes or disc brakes. Rim brakes are the most common on hybrid bikes and feature pads that grip onto the wheel rims. This brake system is more economical, and it’s easier to replace worn pads, leading to less maintenance.

However, this brake system can wear out the wheel rim over time, meaning you have to replace the wheel if you don’t monitor its progress. Compared to rim disc brakes, this brake system is less effective in wet and muddy conditions. It also requires more effort to apply your fingers on the levers if you want to brake aggressively.

Alternatively, hydraulic disc brakes provide stronger braking and less finger effort. This makes it more user-friendly and beneficial for riding in tough environmental conditions. Or mechanical disc brakes require manual adjustments as the pads can wear. If you don’t keep an eye on mechanical disc brakes, they can become worn quickly, leading to other areas of damage on your bike.

Features and Benefits of the Trek Verve 1

In order to conduct this Trek Verve 1 review, we needed to thoroughly research and analyze the Trek Verve 1 spec. Below, you’ll find the top features to pay careful consideration to when deciding if this particular model is the right choice for you.

Trek Verve 1

Trek hybrid bikes can be trusted, but we’re particularly impressed with the Verve 1’s features, in particular, its high-quality frame. It’s designed with a lightweight aluminum frame, which has many incredible benefits to it.

First, this aluminum frame is stiff, enabling an even weight transfer of human power to forward motion. As a result, this makes the Trek Verve 1 bike ideal for sprints. Although it’s light, this certainly doesn’t mean it can’t handle well. In fact, the Verve 1 uses its frame to absorb any road vibrations, creating a smoother journey for the rider.

The Verve 1 features a front suspension fork that contains a spring and a damper to enhance the rider’s experience.

The bottom part of the fork is held onto the wheel and fits over the tubes connected to the frame. Inside of each tube is a shock absorber. As the fork moves up, which happens when the bike hits a bump, the spring becomes compressed and the piston forces fluid through.

This front suspension system can dampen traveling over a slight bump in the road, but it can’t comfortably handle traveling over tree stumps or riding up and down pavements with intent.

More: Trek Dual Sport 2 Review: Is DS2 Worth It?

This bike features 700x40c tires and has what could be commented as a medium tread count. In essence, the Verve 1’s tires aren’t designed for intense weather and environmental conditions.

These tires have less rolling resistance on smoother surfaces, which makes the bike agile and nimble. As a result, you can travel faster and farther on smoother surfaces, than a bike with thicker and larger wheels.

The Verve 1 can comfortably handle terrain, although you’ll likely encounter some difficulties when cycling over mud and tough terrain. In fact, it’ll slow down immensely and you’ll lose control and stability when cycling in these conditions.

The Verve 1 comes with 21 speeds, which allows you to shift through gears as you please. Plus, with a variety to choose from, the Verve 1 has a wide range for climbing steep hills or leisurely cruising on smooth pavements. This hybrid bike can navigate throughout all types of terrain at a comfortable gear speed, and adjusting is easy and user-friendly.

Having multiple speeds on a bike isn’t a necessity for all riders as it depends on your riding preferences and the conditions you’re exposed to. A 21-speed bike features three gears on the front and seven in the rear. Its positioning can actually increase the wear on your bike and the risk of your chain jumping off the gears as you ride. So, if this isn’t necessarily a feature you need or will make the most of, the gear risks and maintenance might be too much for some.

The Verve 1 uses a derailleur to switch between different gears. This system is controlled by shifters that are positioned on the handlebars. In a nutshell, you need to continue pedaling to shift gears, which is great for enabling you to keep at your top speed and not have to slow down to adjust your gears.

Finally, the bike comes with Tektro alloy linear-pull brakes, which are highly beneficial for the rider. When purchasing a hybrid bike, its components and materials must be from brands you can trust. Fortunately, the Verve 1 uses brakes designed by a company that’s been established for over 100 years.

There are many features and advantages of linear-pull brakes. First, they’re inexpensive to make, enabling the Verve 1 to be reasonably-priced. They’re also easy to maintain and replace, even if you’re on the go. Most importantly, they don’t add any strain to the bike’s hubs, spokes, or frame.

However, you should consider that these brakes can be easily affected by water and mud, so you can’t expose the Verve 1 to all weather conditions. Plus, depending on how often you ride the bike, you may need to replace the brake shoes regularly.

Customer Review

We’ve searched the Internet to see what past customers and owners had to say about the Trek Verve 1 . Fortunately, we were happy to discover that most of the reviews were positive and reflected some of the benefits of owning this bicycle.

Alternatives

Are you looking for more reasons to purchase the Verve 1? Or perhaps you’d like some information on how it compares to similar models.

Trek Verve 1 vs Verve 2

When comparing both models of Trek’s Verve bikes, we took into consideration the speed factor. The Verve 1 lets you maintain a leisurely pace without having to put too much effort into pedaling and handling.

Alternatively, the Verve 1 has a wider range of gears, and the 8-speed component enables you to easily conquer steep inclines and helps you to reach your destination quicker—a factor that might be important for those lengthy commutes.

Also, the adjustment stem on the Verve 2 means you can raise and lower the handlebars for easier steering. This feature also makes the bike ideal for a growing person or switching between multiple riders of different heights.

On the other hand, the Verve 1 doesn’t allow you to easily adjust the handlebars, as it comes fitted with a quill.

Trek Verve 1 vs FX1

Next, we looked at comparing the Verve 1 with the FX1. The FX1 is a fitness hybrid bike that is lighter and has narrower tires, enabling you to reach your top speeds with less effort. Plus, the saddle design allows you to reach a more aggressive riding position; an important factor for riding quickly and with intent.

The Verve 1 offers riders stability, comfort, and better traction than the FX1. The Verve 1 can also handle gravel trail rides and features wider tires to absorb bumps easily. Check our detailed review of Trek FX1 here

Trek Verve 1 vs Verve 3

Finally, the Verve 3 features a 9-speed drivetrain that comes in handy for daily commutes. Plus, the Verve 3 provides you with the option of mounting tubeless tires on the bicycle to reduce its overall weight. These tubeless tires come with sealant liquid, which makes them less susceptible to dry punctures.

Compared to the Verve 1, this feature is a top highlight for those searching for a hybrid bike and makes it more durable when riding over bumps and rocks.

The Trek Verve 1 is a hybrid bike that has everything you need for fitness and commuting. Hybrid bikes are highly beneficial for those who aren’t looking to travel at their fastest, but need a model that can withstand tough terrain and far distances.

We recommend the Verve 1 for many reasons. Firstly, its lightweight aluminum frame makes it durable and long-lasting. Secondly, the bike’s wheels can handle intense weather and environmental conditions, enabling you to ride your bike whenever you please, and with no issues of longevity or performance. Finally, the Trek Verve 1 size measurements make it ideal for adults of all heights.

Trek has downgraded the front crank to a 2-speed ring but put a 9-speed Shimano HG200 cassette on the rear, with 11-36 cogs. This gives the rider 18 gears overall with the added range provided by the extra-large 36t rear cog.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Trek Verve 3 hydraulic Disc brake rotors

Trek has also decided to go with Shimano in the braking department this time around. Shimano’s MT200 hydraulic disc brakes are a firm favorite amongst hybrid and MTB riders alike. They provide great grip, instant reaction time, and no slippage even in wet weather.

Bontrager Hardcase Wheels

Verve 3 Disc Lowstep bluelight

Bontrager’s Hardcase Ultimate tires are the real deal when it comes to tackling hazardous city streets. These things will carve through rubble or broken rocks without trouble and should even keep you safe against glass shards or small nails. The 700c x 45 wire-beaded tires also have reflective sidewalls for safer night riding.

Alpha Gold Aluminum Frame

The Alpha Gold aluminum frame is compatible with Trek’s DuoTrap S sensor system for tracking your progress. It also has a front and rear rack and fender mounts if you wish to convert the Verve 3 into a decent touring bicycle. With the strong frame and alloy fork, the Verve 3 can carry up to 300 lbs (136 kg) of overall weight (rider and luggage).

DuoTrap S Compatible

Verve 3 Disc Lowstep duotrap bluetooth device

DuoTrap S is Trek’s unique frame-integrated wireless computer system that tracks your statistics while you cycle. It can be installed neatly into the frame on the inside of the rear wheel for a clean and aerodynamic finish. The DuoTrap S device (sold separately) tracks your cycling statistics and sends the information wirelessly to a Bluetooth or ANT+ enabled cycling computer or smartphone.

Trek Verve 1 Disc

trek verve 1

MSRP $530 Best Features : Mechanical disc brakes, Bontrager Tires, DuoTrap S compatible (Not included)

Verve 1 is an excellent introductory hybrid bike at an attractive price . Its comfortable geometry is perfect for first-timers or casual recreational riders. It’s built from tough, reliable components that are simple to clean and repair, making maintenance an easy task for new riders. It doesn’t have the suspension required for heavy off-road riding but it does have extra-large tires to absorb the shock of small rocks and bumpy roads. This makes it a decent bike for riding on dirt tracks in parks or along country lanes.

  • Men’s Trek Verve 1 Disc comes in two colors: Factory Orange  and Trek Black , and four sizes: S, M, L, XL.
  • Women’s Trek Verve 2 Disc comes in four sizes: XS, S, M, L and in two colors: Era White , and Dnister Black

Main Features

Aluminum frame and steel fork.

Verve 1 Disc grey

The strong Alpha Gold aluminum frame is built to carry weight and take abuse so it won’t break on you anytime soon. Attach a rack to the rear so you can carry groceries or go on short weekend camping trips in the countryside. This is complemented by a steel front fork with rack and fender mounts.

Mechanical disc brakes

Disc brakes provide much-improved stopping power in wet weather so you won’t have to worry about cycling in the rain. These Tektro MD-M280 mechanical disc brakes are highly rated and quality tested.

Shimano Gearing

Trek Verve 1 Disc brakes with shimano gearing

The Verve 1 has good value Shimano Altus and Tourney derailleurs making up its 21-speed drivetrain, with a SunRace 14-34t freewheel cassette. The combination offers a wide range of gears so you can tackle any hills without trouble.

Extra-large tires

Bontrager supplies the extra-large 700x45c tires on the Verve 1 so you can comfortably attack even the most cobbled streets. The thick wire-bead tires offer maximum puncture protection and have reflective sidewalls for safer night riding.

The Verve 1 is compatible with Trek’s proprietary DuoTrap S wireless computer system (sold separately). The system tracks your cycling statistics and sends the information wirelessly to a Bluetooth or ANT+ enabled cycling computer or smartphone.

Trek Verve 2 Disc

trek verve 2

MSRP  $670 Best Features : Hydraulic Disc Brakes, Bontrager 700x45c wheels, Alpha Gold aluminum frame, Suspension seat post

The Verve 2 is an intermediate hybrid bike for casual riders with some nice components upgrades from Verve 1. Most notably, the Verve 2 is fitted with a higher-quality Shimano 8-speed cassette that offers a wider range of gears. It benefits from the same solid aluminum frame material but with a lighter alloy fork at the front.

  • Men’s Trek Verve 2 Disc comes in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) and two colors: Rage Red and Lithium Grey. Coming in at about 29 lbs (13.2 kg), it’s a bit lighter than the Verve 1 but equally strong and reliable.
  • Women’s Trek Verve 2 Disc comes also in four sizes (XS, S, M, L) and two colors: Teal and Quiksilver. Weighing 28.8lbs (13kg).

Shimano Groupset

Trek Verve 2 Disc shimano groupset

The Verve 2 has a full Shimano drivetrain comprised of Altus and Tourney derailleurs and an 8-speed Shimano HG31 cassette. Combined with the triple cog on the crank gives you 24 gears in total, enough to tackle steep hills or hit the tarmac with speed.

Hydraulic disc brakes

The Verve 2 enjoys improved braking power with Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic disc brakes. Hydraulic brakes provide quicker and more reactive braking power with less pressure required, ensuring you always stop in time and avoid accidents.

Suspension Seatpost

Trek Verve 2 Disc suspension saddle

While Verve 2 doesn’t have any suspension on the front or rear wheels it does get a nice touch with seat post suspension. The alloy adjustable seat post has a small added spring that gives up to 27.2mm of travel that will absorb any sudden bumps that creep up on you.

Aluminum Frame and Alloy Fork

The Verve 2 has the same Trek Alpha Gold aluminum frame as the Verve 1 with a lighter 415mm alloy fork. The comfortable frame geometry puts the rider in an upright position, with a 71.5-degree head angle and an average 70-degree seat tube angle.

Bontrager Wheels

The wheels on the Verve 2 are Bontrager Connection with size 700x45c Bontrager H5 wire-bead tires. The thick-treaded, reflective and puncture-protected tires are strong and resilient in all types of weather, ensuring you stay safe and visible even in low-light conditions.

Trek Verve 3 Disc

trek verve 3 bikes

MSRP  $820 Best Features : Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes, Bontrager Hardcase wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, Shimano Acera Groupset

  • Men’s Verve 3 Disc comes in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) and two colors: Metallic Gunmetal and Mulsanne Blue. It weighs on average 30.2 lbs (13.7 kg), making it slightly heavier than the Verve 2 and about equal to the Verve 1.
  • Women’s Verve 3 Disc weighs about 13.54 kg / 29.85 lb, comes in two colors: Quicksilver, Purple Abyss. Four sizes: XS, S, M, L

What Can Be Better?

Trek Verve fully equipped bicycle

It’s hard to find any cons about those bikes, and we really couldn’t find anything major. If you are willing to sacrifice the speed and ease of riding, you might want to swap the rigid fork to a front suspension with at least 50mm travel.

Another not-so-good fact about these bikes is that they look really nice and glossy, which means you have to take good care of it by not getting the frame scratched. We also recommend investing in a solid bicycle lock too as this bike simply won’t get unnoticed!

Conclusion: why is the verve so popular.

  • Built by Trek
  • Outworldly beautiful design
  • Unbeatable value in terms of geometry and components
  • Super comfortable and easy to ride
  • Rack & fender ready for maximum versatility

It is almost impossible to fit a front rack on the verve 3. There’s only a mid fork eyelet, and the fork is too wide for the little options there are for mid-fork mounting front racks.

A friend bought a Verve 1in black. It is labeled as a “1” yet it has much up-graded components. It’s more like a “3”. It was purchased and put to together by Trek employees. Is this possible?

Hi, could you recommend a specific brand of a front suspension fork that I could buy to replace the rigid front fork for the Trek Verve 3 disc lowstep with a medium frame?

Is The Trek Verve 1 Disc Worth Buying? [Trek Verve 1 Disc Review]

Table of Contents

The Trek Verve 1 disc is the entry-level model of the Trek Verve. The price is also the most affordable Trek hybrid bike. As a commuting daily rider, the preferred comfort ride.

Trek Verve 1 Disc

The newly released Trek Verve 1 Disc comes with an Alpha Gold Aluminum frame and Verve Steel fork, Shimano Altus drivetrain, and mechanical disc brakes, and multiple mounting positions, all for a very reasonable $679.99.

Our tester in his home state of Pennsylvania spent half a month riding to complete the test of the Trek Verve 1. Below we will pick up a breakdown of the Trek Verve 1 disc performance, components, and features for city riding and long-distance riding as well as a brief comparison between it and other versions.

In the last part, we will give some comparison options of other bikes. This will make it easier for you to choose the right bike for you.

City Riding

Trek Verve 1 Disc

The Trek Verve 1 disc is still a hybrid bike by definition. It’s not just the Trek Verve 1 disc hybrid bike for men, but also the Trek Verve 1 disc lowstep for women, making it a great choice for riders who want to take a weekend trip with their family or a couple outing together.

The Trek Verve 1 is equipped with wide 45C tires, an upright geometry frame, and mechanical disc brakes, making it very comfortable to ride on city bike paths or in neighborhoods.

From the very beginning, the ride is kept in an upright riding position, protecting the comfort of your shoulders and back without damaging your joints and muscles.

City riding is less likely to encounter steeper terrain, and to my surprise, it can be ridden more easily on the less steep uphill portion with lots of gearing and grippy wide tires.

The slow downhill section immediately afterwards also had disc brakes and ergonomic grips that made the ride easier for me to control.

The surface of the bike path along the river was slightly rough, which I didn’t find hard to take. The padded seat and flexible tires absorbed most of the shock.

Of course, you can still ride fast on open ground, with the 28-tooth cassette and 14-tooth flywheel working in tandem with your high-speed pedaling to give you a quick spike in speed.

The Trek Verve 1 disc will amaze on city roads, both in terms of body performance and riding feel.

Long Distance Rides

Our testers rode a one-time ride of 32 miles. This would be a real test for the Trek Verve 1 disc.

Compared to road bikes suitable for long rides, the Verve 1 disc isn’t particularly fast. But in the initial acceleration phase, it doesn’t lose out to them.

The Bontrager H5 Comp tires play an important role on long rides, as they are wide enough to be especially suitable for riding on wet ground after rain, with plenty of traction.

With the mudguard installed, you won’t be afraid of mud and water washing onto your clothes either. And with the mounting holes reserved for the rear rack, it’s easier to ride long distances or take a package with you.

The biggest drawback of the Trek Verve 1 disc’s road performance is its gear count. There are 21 gears, but road bike riders who are used to 3X9 or 3X10 will lament the low number of gears. And the tires are tubed, which makes the front wheel slightly heavier.

What we really like is the way it rides sit-to-stand, more relaxed and faster. In terms of faster speeds and more gearing, it seems unreasonable to expect that from this hybrid bike. Overall happy with the performance on long rides.

Components and Specifications

Frame (4.5/5).

 Trek Verve 1 disc

Riders who focus on riding comfortably really like the frame design of the Trek Verve 1 disc.

The upright geometry allows the rider to maintain a very comfortable upright riding position. Clean and tidy internal alignment, and soft paint colors. The minimalist TREK logo makes it more appealing to young urbanites who like the simple style.

The frame also has reserved rack and fender mounts, making it even more versatile. Two water bottle cage mounting positions allow riders who want to ride long distances to be prepared for longer trips. The frame is compatible with the DuoTrap S mount, making it not only a frame for casual riders, but also one that allows for better distance planning and rationalization of fitness programs during fitness rides.

So, we also like the Trek Verve 1 versatile frame.

Shimano drivetrain (3.5/5)

Trek Verve 1 disc - Shimano drivetrain

The Trek Verve 1 disc features a Shimano Tourney Front derailleur and Shimano Altus M310 Rear derailleur, as well as a Shimano Altus EF500 Shifter.

Although not particularly fond of the low-end Shimano Tourney, the front derailleur is an acceptable component considering that it has not been used much in the long run. The rear chainstay is the relatively more expensive Shimano Altus, which is more robust and durable.

The Shimano Altus EF500 Shifter doesn’t find too many problems when shifting. Of course, most of these drivetrain components would be found in cheap mountain bikes, and it makes perfect sense to put them in the Trek Verve 1 disc, a hybrid bike.

Tektro MD-M280 Mechanical Discs (4.0/5)

Tektro MD-M280 Mechanical Discs

The Trek Verve 1 disc features a Tektro MD-M280 mechanical disc brake.

This is great for hybrid bikes, less maintenance. And the braking effect will be better compared to brakes with alloy cable pull.

Adapts to downhill braking in wet and muddy roads, and there is no fade-in braking power even on longer road downhill roads.

Bontrager H5 Comp Tires (4.0/5)

Bontrager H5 Comp Tires

Standard 700c height, but wider 45c tires for added stability while riding.

Can roll fast on smooth bike trails, and having an inner tube makes the outer tire not so hard. 30PSI tire pressure can be easily replenished with normal inflation gear.

Trek Urban handlebar (4.5/5)

Trek Urban handlebar

What we really like is that the Trek Urban handlebar can be raised 45mm, which makes it easy for riders of all heights to adjust to a comfortable sitting position.

Next is the Bontrager Satellite, which adds support to the palm area, a small change that increases the grip area on the handlebars and thus improves control of the bike.

Lastly, the Bontrager Quill handlebar stem, which can be adjusted for a 25° rise angle. The stacking of these components makes it very easy for the casual rider to find a comfortable ride.

Trek Verve 1 disc Specs

Other versions of trek verve 1, trek verve 1 2017-2019.

Trek Verve 1 2017

The Shimano Tourney TY51 front derailleur is used, and there are some differences in sturdiness compared to the new version.

Including in this version of the Trek Verve 1 is the absence of disc brakes. The new model also abandons the alloy cable brake in favor of a more reasonably priced, more precise mechanical disc brake.

The new Trek Verve 1 doesn’t change much in terms of other components, but the weight of the bike has been increased by about 2 pounds, which doesn’t affect the casual rider too much.

Trek Verve 1 Disc

Trek Verve 1 Lowstep 2020

Compared to the new Verve 1 Disc, the accessories are almost identical.

But in terms of paint colors, the Verve 1 Disc only comes in Anthracite and White, while the new one is a bit better looking, with Trek Black and Factory Orange.

Comparison Table

Competition, verve 2 disc vs verve 1 disc.

Verve 2 Disc

The Trek Verve 2 Disc, which has been upgraded from the Trek Verve 1 Disc, is a little more comfortable to ride. But the overall difference is not that big.

The paint colors of Trek Verve 2 Disc are Lithium Grey and Rage Red, which are very different from the paint colors of Trek Verve 1 Disc.

Other than that is the fork upgrade, the Verve alloy fork is more durable, more expensive and lighter compared to the Verve 1 Disc’s steel fork.

The major upgrade between them is the drivetrain, which is what we complained earlier about the insufficient number of gears used, and the 3X8 drivetrain, which slightly alleviates this problem.

The Trek Verve 2 Disc uses the more robust Bontrager City pedal, based on the pedal’s vulnerability to damage. Finally, the Verve 2 Disc uses hydraulic disc brakes for easier braking, but the braking effect is not too significantly different from the Verve 1 Disc’s Tektro MD-M280 mechanical disc.

In terms of accessory stacking, the Trek Verve 2 Disc is a bit more cost-effective. And you only need to add $120 to your budget to get it.

Trek Verve 3 Disc vs Verve 1 Disc

Trek Verve 3 Disc

For the comparison of these two, we still start with the paint colors, Trek Verve 3 Disc Metallic Gunmetal, and Mulsanne Blue. our testers prefer the second one.

In the next part of the component upgrade, the fork remains the same as the Trek Verve 2 Disc’s Verve alloy fork. Puncture-resistant Bontrager H5 Hard-Case Ultimate tires make you look forward to gravel road rides even more.

The drivetrain is further upgraded with the Shimano Acera 2X9 drivetrain, which is a bit more durable than the Shimano Altus and more slippery in shifting. The others are the KMC X9 Chain and Bontrager City pedals, both of which have been upgraded.

Finally, the braking system, Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes are more precise brakes.

All in all, the Trek Verve 3 Disc is a considerable upgrade from the Trek Verve 1 Disc, making the bike more robust, ditching some of the original low-end parts, extending the bike’s life, and increasing riding comfort.

Trek Dual Sport 4 vs Verve 1 Disc

Trek Dual Sport 4

The same hybrid bike, but these are two different branches.

The Trek Verve 1 Disc is a hybrid bike that combines a road bike with a regular bike. The Trek Dual Sport 4 is a hybrid bike that combines a mountain bike with a regular bike.

If you live in a hilly area or want the occasional mountain ride, then the Trek Dual Sport 4 will be a better fit for you.

With its dual sport frame and steep head tube angle, I would mistake this for a trail mountain bike if it didn’t have only a 63mm fork that is adequate for use. The configuration is almost a copy of the Trek Marlin 6.

But it also seems to have a lot of differences. the Bontrager GR1 Expert’s delicate knobs are specifically gravel tires, so they provide a lot of traction on normal mountain riding and don’t fade easily on dirt roads.

With the 1X11 drivetrain, you won’t feel the gear range is too narrow. The last thing worth mentioning is that its shock fork has a remote locking feature that allows you to ride on flat roads, a similar experience to the Trek Verve 1 Disc.

Schwinn GTX Hybrid Bike vs Trek Verve 1 Disc

Schwinn GTX Comfort Adult Hybrid Bike

The smaller budget Schwinn GTX is the same hybrid bike for easy mountain riding. Equipped with Schwinn’s aluminum frame, and 700X38c hybrid tires that can be ridden at faster speeds, and a front shock fork.

Of course, it weighs about 5 pounds more compared to the Trek Verve 1 Disc, along with its alloy cable pull brakes. The configuration is not as high as the Trek Verve 1 Disc, but it is affordable and has a good riding experience. A great bike for commuter riders.

Final Verdict (4.0/5)

The Verve 1 Disc offers premium comfort at an unbeatable value. The lightweight frame, impressive braking power, durable components, and comfortable avant-garde design make this bike one of the best choices for people who want to get more fun out of their casual rides. That’s why it’s a worthy hybrid bike to buy. The final rating we gave it was 4.0.

CelebWatch: Shatner Gets “Weird” + Pine Goes To “Moscow” + Nimoy Wraps “Fringe” + Quinto On The “Margin”

Shatner pitches "Weird or What" in Cannes

We will find in May if William Shatner’s new sitcom Bleep My Dad Says gets picked up, but one Shatner show that is definitely going on the air is Weird or What , a new documentary series Shatner is co-producing an hosting. The show description press release make it sound a bit like Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of :

in Weird or What? William Shatner will investigate and analyze all that is weird in the world, including everything from paranormal phenomena to weird and wonderful creatures, from medical oddities to mysterious disappearances, and bizarre natural disasters to mystical monster attacks.

The show has been sold to Discovery Channel in the US and History Channel in Canada. Today Shatner is at the MIP TV convention in Cannes today selling  the show to the world. Variety reports that production company Cineflix has successfully sold the show to "nearly every territory". At the event Shatner described the show:

We’re looking at weird circumstances but we’re presenting them in a light-hearted, jaunty way. We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.

Chris Pine headed to Moscow as Jack Ryan

Last year Chris Pine, the new Kirk, was tapped as the new Jack Ryan, to head up another big Paramount franchise. New details have emerged on this next film based on the Tom Clancy character. Pajiba reports the following story synopsis for the next Jack Ryan film (now with the working title of "Moscow"):

The movie will pick up with the Jack Ryan not long after his stint in the Marines, before he’s joined the CIA, while he’s a Wall Street stock broker, an occupation that will play heavily into the script. In the Clancy novels, Jack Ryan was a successful financial analyst in Baltimore for Merrill Lynch. In the new movie, he will have transplanted to Moscow to continue his financial advising, not for Merill Lynch (which has been absorbed by Bank of America), but for a billionaire employer. It is that billionaire employer who eventually sets Jack Ryan up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy. After that, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer.

No word yet on when "Moscow" will go in front of cameras or be released, but probably following Pine’s work on the next Star Trek .

Nimoy’s last day as an actor? + honored as space inspiration

Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy has recently stated he is ready to back into acting retirement. This would mean his last job as an actor would be reprising his role as William Bell in the season finale  JJ Abrams’ Fringe . And yesterday, Nimoy tweeted " Finishing work on Fringe today. Really good experience. The two parter will air in May." Today he tweeted that his back home. Speaking of Twitter, in just four days TheRealNimoy has picked up almost 33,000 followers.

But Mr. Nimoy is still out and about. On Thursday Leonard is being honored by the Space Foundation at the National Space Symposium in Colorado. Nimoy is being presented with the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach award for being an inspiration to people around the world "to explore the wonders of science, space, and technology." And a reminder, next Friday the original Spock is headed to the Vulcan, Alberta, Canada (the official Star Trek capital of Canada) to unveil a bust of himself, and then he is off to the Calgary Entertainment Expo for the weekend.

Quinto on NYSE floor

Finally we come to the new Mr. Spock, Zachary Quinto. The actor is currently in New York  filling out his resume as a producer an actor in Margin Call , a film set in the world of the stock market. Last week Zach tweeted this pic of himself with his Before the Door production company partners.

While he has been in New York, Quinto has been a frequent Twitterer, sending gems like this one last Thursday:

the t-shirt i was wearing today smelled. so i bought a new t-shirt. now it smells. already. why you got to be so smelly t-shirts?

But no worries, Zach was cleaned up all nice by the next night…

Jeez, that photo of Nimoy is fierce! :D

I cant wait to see nimoy and the shat at vegas will miss them when their gone

Shats new show sounds fun–long as they dont make fun of believers cuz that could be bad n sad–

Like a jaunty “In Search Of…”

If I see one more word with quotes around it I’m going to “scream”.

Has Shatner seen Star Trek 11 yet?

How really cares. I don’t. maybe I did at one point. But I don’t now. Let it go. For crying….out….loud

“We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.”

In contrast to some of today’s Hollywood actor wannabees, Shatner can afford to not take himself too seriously. :)

Nimoy looks like an old, and very wise Spock on that photo. Acting retirement surely would be a waste of material…

#6 No, he’s busy having a life. :))

The two shows should be combined to form a show called “Weird Fringe”, and in the first show William Shatner could focus on mysteries of Mr.Spock’s bowl haircut.

Wow whats up with Quinto’s nerdball galsses….First we see a hobo Spock and now dork Spock.

ZQ’s follow up tweet is hilarious!

Nimoy always look cool…kinda badass…you wish Fringe would throw a evil Spock beard on him! Shat looks kinda pudgy…a jolly old type… I was really hoping Mr Nimoy would make it in the new MI movie as Paris…maybe a evil Paris with a beard!

Jack Ryan before Star Trek or after???

From everything I’ve seen of Ben Affleck, he’s pretty impressed with himself. Chris Pine will be 1000 times better than him.

Quinto needs a fashion adviser.

I think Quinto should do a music video as Bilbo Baggins

Alec Baldwin was a great Jack Ryan. Tough act to follow (and I’m a big Ford fan).

16. Yeah! xD lol

Quinto is always dressed stylish, cool and modern- I love it. Zach, just rub some patchouly on yourself and get back to work please!!!!!!!! And Bleep Jack Ryan!

Article summary

Real Madrid's sole Group G defeat came at CSKA Moskva, who are hoping to take third place on matchday six.

Article body

Real Madrid will look to end another impressive group campaign by gaining revenge on a CSKA Moskva side who inflicted the holders' only defeat in Group G and are hoping to finish third in the section.

• Santiago Solari's side made sure of finishing first in their section with victory on matchday five – the 2-0 victory at Roma made it four wins from five in Group G. The exception was a 1-0 loss at CSKA in the second round of matches, Nikola Vlašić scoring the only goal in the second minute.

• CSKA have managed only one point from their other four matches, losing the last three, and are level with Viktoria Plzeň on four points – but behind the Czech champions on head-to-head record. CSKA must therefore pick up more points than Plzeň to finish third.

Previous meetings • Before their matchday two meeting in Russia, the sides had crossed paths just twice, in the 2011/12 round of 16, when they drew 1-1 in Moscow before Madrid eased to a 4-1 win in Spain, Karim Benzema among the scorers.

• Madrid went on to the semi-finals, where they lost on penalties to Bayern München.

Form guide Real Madrid • The 1-0 loss at CSKA is Madrid's only blemish to date in this season's competition, with two wins apiece against Roma (3-0 home, 2-0 away) and Plzeň (2-1 home, 5-0 away). The victory in the Czech Republic marked Solari's first match in charge following the departure of Julen Lopetegui on 29 October.

• Madrid have lost only five of their last 38 European matches, home and away.

• Madrid are holders and 13-time champions. Semi-finalists or better in each of the last eight seasons, this is Real Madrid's 49th European Cup campaign – more than any other side.

• Third in last season's Liga, the Spanish giants are in the UEFA Champions League group stage for the 23rd time – a competition high they share with Barcelona and Porto. They have also now qualified for the knockout phase for a record 23rd time – twice more than Barcelona.

• In 2017/18, Madrid picked up seven points at home but finished second in their group – the second year running they had been runners-up in their section – before going on to beat Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern München in the knockout rounds. Gareth Bale (2) and Karim Benzema scored in the 3-1 final victory against Liverpool in Kyiv.

• The Merengues have won 36 of their last 44 UEFA Champions League home matches, losing just two – 4-3 to Schalke in their 2014/15 round of 16 second leg and against Juventus last season. They still won both ties on aggregate.

• The defeat at CSKA ended Madrid's six-match unbeaten run against Russian clubs, home and away (W4 D2).

• Madrid have not lost at home to Russian visitors since a 3-1 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-final reverse to Spartak Moskva in March 1991, also the aggregate score, in the second such fixture. Their record since is W7 D1.

• Under Lopetegui, the Merengues lost 4-2 to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn in August, denying them a third straight triumph in the competition. The defeat in Moscow meant Madrid lost two European fixtures out of four under Lopetegui before his departure.

CSKA Moskva • CSKA picked up four points from their first two Group G games, coming from two down to salvage a point at Plzeň on matchday one before beating Madrid in Moscow. They have lost all three games since, though, two to Roma (0-3 away, 1-2 home) and a 2-1 reverse at home to Plzeň last time out.

• This is CSKA's 12th UEFA Champions League campaign, equalling the Russian record previously held alone by Spartak Moskva.

• In 2017/18 CSKA finished third behind Manchester United and Basel in their UEFA Champions League section, going on to beat Crvena zvezda and Lyon in the UEFA Europa League before losing to Arsenal in the quarter-finals (1-4 away, 2-2 home).

• The Russian club won five of their eight away European games in 2017/18 (D1 L2), although the win at Lyon last season is their only success in six (D2 L3).

• CSKA have won on two of their three trips to Spain.

Links and trivia • Luka Modrić provided an assist in a 2-2 draw, then scored his penalty past CSKA's Igor Akinfeev in the shoot-out as Croatia eliminated hosts Russia from this summer's FIFA World Cup quarter-finals in Moscow. Mário Fernandes, who scored the hosts' second goal, and Alan Dzagoev were also in the Russia team, Fernandes missing his spot kick in the shoot-out.

• Akinfeev also saved two penalties in Russia's shoot-out win against Spain in the last 16; Sergio Ramos converted Spain's fourth kick. Fernandes was again in the Russia side; Nacho, Isco, Marco Asensio and substitute Dani Carvajal also featured for Spain.

• Ramos scored twice in Spain's 3-3 friendly draw against Russia in November 2017.

• Akinfeev saved a Bale penalty in Russia's 2-1 home defeat of Wales in 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying. The Welshman scored past the CSKA goalkeeper in a 3-0 win against Russia in the UEFA EURO 2016 group stage, taking his side into the round of 16 and knocking out Akinfeev's side.

• International team-mates: Luka Modrić & Nikola Vlašić (Croatia) Federico Valverde & Abel Hernández (Uruguay)

Latest news

Real Madrid • Thibaut Courtois' next appearance in UEFA club competition will be his 50th.

• On Sunday Madrid were 1-0 winners at Huesca, Gareth Bale separating the sides with his first Liga goal since 1 September. It was the Welshman's return to action having limped off after 63 minutes of the 2-0 victory against Valencia on 1 December.

• That was Madrid's fourth win in their last ten league matches (D1 L5).

• Santiago Solari was named permanent manager on 13 November after making the best start as Madrid coach in the club's history, winning his first four games with a goal difference of plus 13.

• The Merengues were beaten 3-0 at Eibar on 24 November, their fifth Liga defeat of the season; they suffered only six in the whole of 2017/18.

• After losing 5-1 to Barcelona on 28 October, Julen Lopetegui's last game in charge, Madrid won their next four games in all competitions, scoring 15 goals.

• The Merengues beat Melilla 6-1 (10-1 on aggregate) in the second leg of their Copa del Rey fourth-round tie on 6 December. Twenty-one-year-old Javier Sánchez and Vinícius Junior, both making their second Madrid starts, were on target with Federico Valverde making his full debut for the club. Francisco García, 19, and 21-year-old Álvaro Fidalgo made their debuts as second-half substitutes.

• Marco Asensio scored twice against Melillla, his first goals since the first leg on 31 October. He has not scored in the Liga since 22 September.

• Isco also scored twice, his first goals for the club since finding the net against Roma on matchday one.

• Nacho picked up a knee injury in the 4-2 win at Celta Vigo on 11 November and has not played since. Casemiro (ankle) went off in the first half of that game and has been absent since.

• Toni Kroos picked up a knee injury in matchday five's victory at Roma and has not featured since, while Mariano Díaz picked up a thigh problem against Melilla.

• Jesús Vallejo was out between 16 October and 6 December with a thigh problem.

• Luka Modrić won the Ballon d'Or on 3 December, the first Croatian to collect the prize and the first winner other than Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi since 2007.

• Modric was also voted UEFA Men's Player of the Year for 2017/18 on 30 August. The Croatian also collected the award for UEFA Champions League Midfielder of the Season, with club-mates Keylor Navas and Sergio Ramos picking up the prizes for Goalkeeper and Defender respectively.

CSKA Moskva • Matchday five is CSKA's only defeat in their last five matches in all competitions (W3 D1). They beat Yenisey 2-1 at home on Saturday.

• The Moscow club are unbeaten in five Premier League matches (W3 D2), keeping four successive clean sheets before the weekend.

• Fedor Chalov is the Russian Premier League's top scorer after 17 games with nine goals.

• The 0-0 draw at Rostov on 2 December was Igor Akinfeev's 300th career clean sheet, a Russian record.

• Ilzat Akhmetov has not played since 11 November and has a shoulder injury.

• Alan Dzagoev (thigh) has been out since 3 November, as had Abel Hernández (adductor) before returning as a second-half substitute at the weekend.

• Viktor Vasin is still recovering from a cruciate ligament injury suffered in February. Aleksandr Makarov is back in training after recovering from his own cruciate problem.
