Best Electric Bike Deals

If you came to me and said, “I want an electric bike, and I've never ridden one before,” I would consider a few items. You probably don't want a 65-pound direct-to-consumer behemoth that will crush you at a standstill or require you to learn how to tune hydraulic brakes. At a mere 40 pounds, the Trek FX+ 2 ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) is a relatively lightweight, aluminum city commuter made by a company with a wide network of retailers who can help you if things go awry. I've been testing electric bikes for years, and this is the first and only bike my dad, who is in his sixties, grabs to chase after my kids.

Before you murder me, I have to say that if you like mountain biking, $5,500 is not an insane price to pay for a superlight bike with full suspension—even without an electric motor. Trek is offering a few models for sale. This is the most affordable version; the quality of the components increases as you go higher on the price scale. However, this one has a carbon frame with a quiet motor and the same specs as the model I tested. The modest 250-watt motor is just enough to keep up with your friends on the uphills so you can all enjoy the downhills together.

If you've dug your helmet out of the garage and discovered that the foam has all quietly rotted away during the winter, you need a new one. This is a modestly priced helmet by Bontrager, which Trek owns. It features MIPS (Multidirectional Impact Protection System), which allows the helmet to slide relative to the brain and deflect impact.

Trekfest kicks off in Riverside on Friday

RIVERSIDE, Iowa (KCRG) - People in Riverside are getting ready to live long and prosper at this year’s Trekfest.

Riverside is the birthplace of Star Trek’s Captain James T. Kirk.

The event will include a parade, live music, food and more.

There’s also a chance to meet one of the stars of the franchise: Chase Masterson.

There are some warm up events on Thursday, but the festival officially kicks off Friday and wraps up on Saturday.

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

Travelling with Moscow’s metro is inexpensive. You can have a lot of joy for just a few Rubbles.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity in Nikitniki, Moscow

The Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity in Nikitniki (the Church of the Georgian Icon of the Mother of God on Varvarka) is a great example of the Russian (Muscovite) uzorochye of the middle of the 17th century.

It was built by Yaroslavl merchants in Kitay-Gorod, a cultural and historical area within the central part of Moscow , in 1628-1651. In Soviet times, this part of the city was built up with administrative buildings, but the church was preserved and used as a museum. The Russian (Muscovite) uzorochye is an architectural style formed in the 17th century. It is characterized by intricate forms, an abundance of decor, complexity of composition, and picturesque silhouettes.

This building is a milestone in the history of Russian architecture; it served as a model for many Moscow churches of the second half of the 17th century.

A History of Moscow in 13 Dishes

Forget traveling to the Netherlands. I saw millions of colorful tulips without having to leave the US.

• I've always dreamed of traveling to the Netherlands to visit the famous tulip festival .
• Instead, I visited Mount Vernon, Washington, during the height of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.
• I loved being able to see millions of colorful tulips without having to travel abroad .

The Netherlands' legendary tulip fields have always been on my bucket list .

Last year, the country's famous Keukenhof park saw almost 1.4 million visitors from around the world. However, the trip has always been just out of reach for me due to the travel cost and timing.

That's why I was so excited to discover the largest tulip festival in the US was located in Northwest Washington, just a little over an hour north of Seattle.

After seeing the monthlong event referred to as "the Netherlands of the Northwest" by the festival's executive director , I knew I had to visit the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Here's what it was like.

I visited RoozenGaarde, which is the largest of the participating farms

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is made up of four of the region's flowering bulb farms, all conducting their own events and celebrations. Admission to each farm typically ranges from $13 to $20 per adult.

To avoid the heavy crowds typically found on weekends — and save a few dollars — I visited the festival on a weekday.

I started my journey at RoozenGaarde, which has about 200 types of tulips. I pulled into the busy parking lot and saw that a giant row of green hedges blocked the epic views I knew were on the other side.

I followed the signs to a ticket booth, which was perfectly situated for prime viewing pleasure, and my first taste of the beauty to come. I paid $15, plus tax, for my ticket, which did not allow for re-entry.

Once I stepped beyond the ticket booth, I saw a replica of a wooden Dutch windmill surrounded by vivid blooming tulips.

Behind it, I caught a glimpse of the gorgeous flowering tulip fields and the Cascade Mountain Range, which served as a breathtaking backdrop to the entire scene.

I headed straight to the fields to explore

Once immersed in the tulips, I finally slowed my excited rush to take in the beauty of the millions of flowers around me. I took a closer look at an individual tulip to see the surprisingly fine details of the petals and the coloring.

The entire field gives the impression of a 50-acre patchwork quilt with crisp rows of solid color ranging from yellow to purple, and bright Barbie pink to my absolute favorite: glowing red tulips.

Next, I stopped by the display gardens to see a shockingly beautiful array of landscaped blooming bulbs, expertly planted together to show potential buyers what they can recreate in their own gardens.

I gazed with absolute longing and wished I had a garden to justify purchasing a few bulbs .

I didn't end up traveling to the other farms participating in the festival

In the end, I started and ended my tulip-festival experience solely at RoozenGaarde due to losing myself fully in their endless fields.

Do I regret it? No, especially since the other three farms were significantly smaller but charged similar ticket prices as RoozenGaarde.

If you have time and don't mind paying the admission price for each farm, I highly suggest visiting all four participating Skagit Valley Tulip Festival farms.

They're all close to each other and worth the stop to complete a one-of-kind trip you won't soon forget.

The RACC is a small, all volunteer, organization and we are trying to bring you the best TREKFEST ever!  But sometimes things happen that we just can't control.  Times may shift or events change, providers have issues, product availability, weather, or other uncontrollable issues.  There may also be slight time delays due to the limited number of volunteers needing to travel between events.

420 celebration canceled at San Francisco’s Hippie Hill? Not if a psychedelic church can hash out plan

Budget cuts and financial woes forced San Francisco to cancel its annual 420 celebration at Golden Gate Park this year, but a self-described psychedelic church says it will step in to help support the thousands of people expected to still make the “religious pilgrimage.”

“Anybody who is going out to Hippie Hill on 420 to smoke a joint, they’re doing that religiously, whether or not they realize it,” said Church of Ambrosia Pastor Dave Hodges in a statement . “This is like a pilgrimage to Mecca.”

An annual hazy, smoke-filled celebration that goes back to San Francisco’s Summer of Love in 1967, the cannabis-themed festival draws in thousands of people for music, food, comedy and, of course, weed.

In 2022, the event drew about 20,000 people .

But March 26, the city announced the smoke-filled event at Golden Gate Park was canceled because of city budget cuts that prevented the city’s parks to cover staffing for the event, and challenges in the cannabis industry that made sponsorships hard to secure.

Despite the cancellation, many people were still expected to make the annual trek to the park for the April 20 celebration, a day observed by cannabis enthusiasts. City officials stressed there would be no stage, no live music, no booths, and encouraged people to instead celebrate 420 “in a place that’s special and local to them.”

On Thursday, Hodges said Church of Ambrosia had teamed up with the Haight Ashbury Merchants Assn. and nonprofit groups to provide a “safety net” for what they expect to be thousands of visitors.

Calling the 420 annual event a “religious pilgrimage,” the church said in a statement staff will be dispatched to the park to help visitors. They’ll be fitted and identified with T-shirts with the words, “Stoner Safety.”

“We see this as a religious event,” Hodges said.

San Francisco’s Recreation and Parks Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The church, with locations in Oakland and San Francisco, describes itself as a nondenominational, interfaith religious organization that supports access to entheogenic plants, including cannabis and mushrooms.

According to the statement, the church will be providing more than 30 portable toilets, a medical tent staffed with four medics, a team equipped with overdose-reversing drug Narcan, and a booth to hand out bottles of water.

In the statement, Hodges said he is not encouraging people to attend the event.

“The fewer the participants,” he said, “the less likely that available services will fall short,” the statement read.
