Star trek beyond ending & why no sequel 7 years later explained.

Star Trek Beyond set up a sequel for Chris Pine's Captain Kirk and the Kelvin Timeline crew, but it's 7 years later and we're yet to see Star Trek 4.

  • Despite Star Trek: Beyond leaving room for further adventures, Star Trek 4 has yet to be released after 7 years.
  • Star Trek Beyond introduced the USS Enterprise-A as the new starship for Kirk and his crew.
  • The delays in creating a sequel to Star Trek Beyond may be due to pay disputes and the desire to compete with Marvel blockbusters.

Despite Star Trek: Beyond 's ending leaving the doors open for the further adventures of Chris Pine's Kelvin Timeline crew, it's now seven years after the movie's release, and Star Trek 4 is yet to surface. Star Trek Beyond , the third entry in the J.J. Abrams' produced Star Trek movies, stranded the USS Enterprise crew on the planet Altamid. Discovering an abandoned Starfleet vessel from a century earlier, it's revealed that Krall and his army are the mutated crew of the USS Franklin, and Krall has been plotting his revenge against the Federation ever since crashing on Altamid decades ago.

While Kirk and Spock are considering their futures in Star Trek Beyond , there was never any indication that this was intended to be the final Kelvin Timeline movie. Captain Kirk has lost faith in his five-year mission and has applied to become Vice Admiral of the revolutionary new starbase, the Yorktown. Meanwhile, the death of Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy) has forced his younger self to consider leaving Starfleet and continuing Spock's diplomatic work on New Vulcan. By the end of Star Trek Beyond , Kirk and Spock realized they belonged aboard the USS Enterprise together and prepared to continue their five-year mission. Seven years later, audiences are yet to see that mission play out on the big screen.

Star Trek Beyond's Ending & How Kirk Beat Krall Explained

Krall had been tracking the USS Enterprise since it took possession of an ancient artifact that was the final component needed to complete the construction of the Abronath, a devastating ancient bioweapon. With the Abronath in his possession, Krall and his swarm set off for the Yorktown to wipe out its inhabitants. Giving chase in the USS Franklin, Kirk, and the crew first had to weaken Krall's swarm. Spock and Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Karl Urban) beamed aboard one of the swarm ships to throw off their formation, allowing the Franklin to destroy the ships by using "Sabotage" Kirk's favorite Beastie Boys song as a discordant and disruptive noise.

With the Swarm destroyed, Kirk discovered the truth about Krall, that he was actually the embittered war veteran Captain Balthazar Edison. Krall had survived the destruction of the Swarm and still intended to use the Abronath by unleashing it into Yorktown's atmospheric regulator to wipe out all life aboard the space station. Kirk and Krall fought in the central atmospheric regulator, with the Enterprise Captain attempting to prevent Krall from unleashing the weapon. With help from Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott (Simon Pegg), Kirk was able to override the regulator and eject Krall, and the Abronath into the vacuum of space.

Star Trek Beyond Launched The USS Enterprise-A

With the original USS Enterprise destroyed in the spectacular first act of Star Trek Beyond , Kirk needed a new ship after saving Yorktown. The USS Enterprise-A is teased by Commodore Paris (Shohreh Aghdashloo) when she says that the only other ship capable of navigating the nebula near Altamid isn't near completion. With the Enterprise destroyed on Altamid, this new starship was presumably hastily renamed so that the Federation could retain its flagship.

As the Enterprise crew gathered to celebrate Captain Kirk's birthday at the end of Star Trek Beyond , they looked out admiringly at their new starship - the USS Enterprise-A. The construction of the new starship appeared to signal the ongoing adventures of Kirk and the crew. However, to date, the new Enterprise hasn't been put through its paces on the big screen, as Star Trek 4 is perennially delayed by multiple behind-the-scenes issues.

Why Kirk Is Not Vice Admiral & Enterprise Crew Changes

Kirk's heroic efforts guaranteed him the position of Vice Admiral aboard the Yorktown, however, he ultimately declined it. In a callback to the advice his Prime Universe counterpart once gave Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), he decided that there's no fun in becoming a deskbound Admiral. Instead, he was revitalized by his experiences on Altamid and realized that it was an adventure and the chance to " fly" that he really wanted, not promotion. Spock, meanwhile, discovered an old photo of the Prime Universe Enterprise crew, considerably older than their Kelvin Timeline counterparts. Realizing that he had made friends for life, he decided not to leave Starfleet for New Vulcan. Touchingly, Kirk and Spock never voice their doubts to each other, an unspoken acknowledgment of their importance to each other.

Some Enterprise crew members were tragically killed during the fight with Krall, including Ensign Syl (Melissa Roxburgh) who hid the artifact for Kirk. However, Star Trek Beyond teases a potential addition to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek cast in the form of Jaylah. Kirk got her fast-tracked into Starfleet Academy, suggesting that she may have returned as Ensign Jaylah in Star Trek 4 . It's hard to tell if the production problems with Star Trek 4 will make Jaylah's return more, or less, likely.

Star Trek Beyond Lost Leonard Nimoy & Anton Yelchin

Leonard Nimoy's death in 2015 is acknowledged by the passing of Ambassador Spock in Star Trek Beyond . Even in death, Nimoy's Spock influenced the Kelvin Timeline version, as his personal effects revealed the lifelong friendships that his younger self had formed. It was a touching tribute to the legacy of Leonard Nimoy, that also acknowledged Star Trek 's 50th anniversary when Star Trek Beyond was released in 2016.

Tragically, Anton Yelchin was killed in a freak motoring accident at his home a month before Star Trek Beyond 's theatrical release. It's for this reason that the movie ends with a dedication to Anton Yelchin, and Star Trek Beyond is a wonderful tribute to his portrayal of Ensign Pavel Chekov. Yelchin gets some great action sequences and comedy moments which he always excelled at as Chekov. Another tribute to Anton Yelchin was recently made with Star Trek: Picard 's President Anton Chekov (Walter Koenig).

Why Star Trek Beyond Hasn't Had A Sequel In 7+ Years

There have been multiple attempts to realize Star Trek 4 since 2016, with one possible version set to bring back Chris Hemsworth as Lt. George Kirk in a time travel movie. Another Star Trek 4 script, co-written by Quentin Tarantino was due to be a cinematic adaptation of the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "A Piece of the Action", involving a planet whose society was inspired by 1920s Chicago gangsters. For whatever reason, neither of these projects got off the ground, though it's been suggested that pay disputes put paid to the "Two Kirks" movie idea.

Chris Pine's Star Trek 4 plan hints as to why it's taken so long for a Star Trek Beyond sequel to surface. His reference to Paramount wanting Star Trek to compete with the big blockbusters of Marvel Studios is particularly telling. Although far from being a flop, Star Trek Beyond didn't perform as strongly at the box office as expected. Clearly, the various scripts drafted for Star Trek 4 haven't inspired much hope for big box office returns in the eyes of Paramount's studio heads. Ironically, the delays in getting a workable script that can compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe led to director Matt Shakman departing the project for Marvel 's Fantastic Four .

Prior to the ongoing industrial action in Hollywood, a script was being written by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, with J.J. Abrams calling it the closest to 2009's Star Trek in terms of quality of story. The ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes will have delayed work on Star Trek 4 even further. While Paramount Studios long ago abandoned their plan to have Star Trek 4 released in 2023, it's no longer clear exactly when audiences can expect the movie to hit theaters.

Star Trek Beyond Influenced Star Trek On Paramount Plus

While Star Trek as a movie franchise appears to be in a state of flux, the streaming era has allowed it to make a hugely successful return to TV. However, the DNA of J.J. Abrams' Kelvin Timeline movies is shared by these new Star Trek TV shows. It's telling that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is focusing on younger versions of Spock, Uhura, and Kirk, who were arguably the main trio in the first of Abrams' Trek movies. Also, Captain Pike's Enterprise is as sleek and cinematic as the one seen in the Star Trek movies.

Similarly, the uniforms worn by the crew in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds reflect the movie costumes worn by Chris Pine and the cast. While Strange New Worlds is episodic, shows like Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery have told huge movie-style stories across whole seasons. If Star Trek Beyond is truly the end for Star Trek 's Kelvin Timeline, its legacy will live on in the franchise's TV renaissance, truly made possible by the success of the movies that proved there was still an appetite for Gene Roddenberry's vision.

Issues ... from left: Zachary Quinto as Spock, Sofia Boutella as Jaylah, and Karl Urban as Bones McCoy in Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond review – a watchable adventure still heavy on the bromance

Zachary Quinto’s Spock remains the real star of the latest instalment, even if Idris Elba’s Krall could have been given more to do

H ere is the latest of the rebooted Star Trek franchise with Justin Lin (of the Fast And Furious movies) taking over direction – and the first in which Britain’s own Simon Pegg assumes co-scripting responsibilities, with TV writer Doug Jung. Pegg injects plenty of fun and wit and certainly doesn’t hesitate to give his own acting role, chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, a touch more dramatic significance than might otherwise have been the case. However, he naturally also adheres to the tradition of responding to Captain Kirk’s requests for emergency improvised measures with frantic sentences beginning “I cannae...!” and “We cannae....!” – before naturally delivering the goods.

This movie is, poignantly, the final outing for the late Anton Yelchin in the role of Russian officer Chekov, a part which he made his own with boyish eagerness. It’s also notable for including a unambiguous gay relationship: for Sulu, played by John Cho, who is revealed to have a male partner, a civilian from outside Star Fleet, and crucially they also have a child. George Takei, the actor who originally played the role, caused some consternation when he announced he would rather an entirely new gay role was created. Perhaps Takei was uncomfortable with the idea that “his” Sulu has therefore been somehow timidly in the closet all this time. Sulu’s gay identity here is not much emphasised, but unlike the coy and evasive hints in the recent Independence Day movie, the statement is clear enough.

The real star, as ever, is Zachary Quinto’s imperturbable First Officer Spock, who conveys logical calm, droll humour, and a kind of martyred romanticism. He rules the movie with a single raised eyebrow. Without Spock, this might be a bit ordinary.

Star Trek Beyond doesn’t go that far beyond what we might expect: a very decent, watchable franchise episode which is marooned for quite a long time on a distant rocky planet. There is a potent new force for evil in the form of anti-Star Fleet insurgent Krall, played by Idris Elba, although his full personality and motivation take a fair bit of time to flower.

We find ourselves three years in to the Enterprise’s legendary five-year mission, and officers Kirk and Spock are approaching a kind of quarterlife crisis, both in terms of career and their relationship with each other – and it is not entirely facetious to say that their top-level bromance is still far more important, in this heteronormative world, than any actual gay couple. Kirk is brooding about his personal and professional destiny in the vast reaches of space and Spock also has issues: his relationship with Uhuru (Zoe Saldana) is in deep trouble and he receives a sombre communication concerning the great elder, Ambassador Spock. (The grave features of Leonard Nimoy are glimpsed.)

But a phoney and duplicitous distress call plunges the crew into peril, connected with a powerful, Maguffin-y weapon, the Abroneth, yearned for by Krall. Kirk finds himself confronted with the terrible choice of having to abandon ship, and the crew are marooned in alien territory: a happy reminder of the visual language of the 60s Roddenberry TV show. Here, they encounter a fiercely independent kickboxing survivor called Jaylah (reportedly Pegg was inspired by Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone – hence J-Law or Jaylah). It’s a strong performance from Sofia Boutella: her character Is not a million miles away from Daisy Ridley in The Force Awakens, but a bit tougher.

Star Trek Beyond.

The dilithium crystals powering the new Star Trek film are in pretty good shape: it motors along and Chris Pine shows himself again to be a very good actor with easy charm and authority. The bantering relationship between Karl Urban (as Dr “Bones” McCoy) and Quinto is, as ever, very enjoyable. At one stage, McCoy dismisses something Spock says as “horseshit”. Quinto demonstrates great comic timing in the pause he deploys before his dignified reply: “I fail to see how excrement of any kind plays a part.” Maybe this is the real bromance, actually.

This new movie could arguably have given Elba more to do, earlier in the picture, but it is the inter-relationship of the Enterprise’s crew which is the real source of drama. An entertaining adventure.

A First Look at Star Trek™ Adventures Second Edition

A First Look at Star Trek™ Adventures Second Edition

By Nathan Dowdell, 2d20 System Developer Art by Paolo Puggioni

Developing the second edition of Star Trek Adventures was a big challenge. On the one hand, revisiting a game I’d designed was a great opportunity…but, unlike when I’d designed the first edition, I had more than my own expectations to contend with: the game has many dedicated fans now, and I would have to account for their existing enjoyment of the first edition.

But, you came here because you want to know what has changed. Following is a summary of the key elements of second edition. More detail on each topic to come in future blog posts.

  • Cleaned up and refined presentation of the rules. The core mechanics are essentially the same, but we have years more experience with not only Star Trek Adventures but also other 2d20 System games to refine and improve upon how those mechanics are explained and presented on the page (and, yes, the pages are white with black text now).
  • Lessons learned. A lot of the guidance and advice we came up with for the Player’s Guide and Gamemaster’s Guide from a few years ago has been refined and worked into the core of the game.
  • Expanded guidance on and use of the traits mechanic. This was an element which was devised during development of 1st edition, but which was a little under-developed at the time, and not used as fully or as effectively as they could have been. In particular, player characters now have a handful of extra traits to help define their place in the universe.
  • No challenge dice. The game now only uses 20-sided dice: no more challenge dice. Damage in combat has been revised to account for this change, as have extended tasks (and extended consequences, which were introduced in the Gamemaster’s Guide and have been added to the core rules).
  • A wealth of character options. We’ve included 14 character species in the core book, including Cardassians, Ferengi, Klingons, Orions, and Romulans. We’ve added lifepath options for enlisted crew, intelligence operatives, diplomats, and a variety of civilian backgrounds to join the Starfleet officers of the first edition. An expanded list of character roles , and the existing ones from first edition have been made more impactful and interesting to use.
  • Punchier, more evocative talents. Character talents across the board have been tweaked to make their effects more interesting and dramatic, especially the ones that were perhaps a little bland before. In addition, every character species has a distinct ability separate from their talent options, to help rebalance species and avoid situations like the Betazoids and Klingons who had to take ‘mandatory’ talents.
  • Updated advancement and reputation rules. The well-received rules for character advancement and reputation first featured in The Klingon Empire core rulebook are present in the new edition.
  • Revised starship mechanics. Starship mechanics build on the same basic core as they always have: the ship as an extra character that assists the crew. Many elements have been adjusted, partly to reduce how much extra tracking needs to be performed during play, and partly to make actions and choices more impactful and meaningful, especially for those characters not flying the ship or firing phasers.

We’ll be going into more detail on most of these topics in future blog posts, so stay tuned!

Thanks for reading this article, and thank you for your interest and support of Star Trek Adventures ! Keep frequencies open for news about other upcoming Star Trek Adventures product releases. Live long and prosper!

Star Trek: Discovery’s Final Adventure Tackles an Iconic Narrative From The Next Generation

U pgrading the level of excitement and intrigue from the time-hopping adventures encountered in “Discovery” season 2, to the unraveling mystery of the dilithium “Burn” in season 3, and the galactic jeopardy introduced by a highly advanced alien species in season 4, the show’s creators sought to elevate the narrative even further in the final season. Their direction: delving into the very dawn of existence, laying the groundwork for an epic conclusion.

It wasn’t until the final moments of season 5’s opening episode that the scope of the storyline began to solidify, providing viewers with a gripping hook. The mysterious scavengers who seized an artifact of paramount importance to Starfleet, in fact, stole something deeply ingrained in “Trek” mythology: the ancient Progenitor technology responsible for seeding humanoid life across the cosmos. Why revisit this particularly undervalued chapter from “The Next Generation”? During the SXSW “Discovery” premiere, producer Michelle Paradise offered insights:

“The episode ‘The Chase’ resonated deeply with many of us due to its exploration of profound themes such as our origins and the genesis of life. Following its airing, it left us riddled with questions… it was a single episode that introduced this monumental concept to the ‘Star Trek’ lore and then moved on.”

The challenge of addressing such fundamental questions, even within the sci-fi realm of “Star Trek,” is daunting. The decision for a standalone 1990s episode to suddenly introduce a drastic alteration to the franchise’s canon was bold; “Discovery” choosing to embrace and expand upon this narrative is even bolder. Paradise notes that this decision was led by a desire to further develop characters and underlying themes.

FAQ Section

What is the classic next gen storyline that discovery is exploring.

“Discovery” is revisiting the storyline of “The Chase,” an episode from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” that reveals the origins of humanoid life in the universe.

Why did the producers choose this specific narrative for the final season?

Producer Michelle Paradise explained that the episode addressed “huge ideas and huge themes,” such as the creation of life, which left the team with many questions that they wanted to explore further.

Is this storyline a significant change to the “Star Trek” canon?

Yes, the storyline introduced in “The Chase” was a major addition to the “Star Trek” universe and exploring it in “Discovery” deepens the impact of that change.

As “Star Trek: Discovery” embarks on its final season, the show continues to push the boundaries of storytelling within the Star Trek universe by revisiting and expanding upon one of “The Next Generation’s” most profound and underexplored narratives. The decision to explore the origins of humanoid life not only poses existential questions but also allows for a depth of character development and thematic richness that has been a hallmark of the series. This ambitious narrative choice promises to provide a fitting and thought-provoking conclusion to “Discovery’s” voyage.

Beyond wildlife safari in national parks: 6 must-do activities

TRAVEL TRENDS , INDIA Updated : Apr 17, 2024, 10:21 IST

trek beyond adventures

National parks are not just about observing wildlife from a distance. They are in fact much more than that. They offer a plethora of activities that cater to diverse interests, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all visitors. Apart from thrilling adventures, you get to enjoy some of the serene moments in nature, which definitely stands out whenever you are in national parks.

Here are other must-do activities in national parks that you can try beyond the traditional safari experience.

Forest trek

Most national parks have extensive networks of hiking trails, catering to all skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or a novice explorer, there's a trail waiting for you. Hike through those breathtaking landscapes, from towering mountains to lush forests, and get to see the raw beauty of nature first-hand. Places like Kanha National Park, Satpura National Park, and Kunjkharak trek near Corbett are some that you should definitely try.

Wildlife encounters

Beyond the confines of a safari vehicle, national parks offer opportunities for up-close wildlife encounters. Join guided walks or self-guided tours to observe animals in their natural habitat, from elusive birds to majestic predators. Remember to maintain a safe distance and respect the wildlife's space.

Camping under the stars

Yes, you can also opt to spend a night under the star-studded sky by camping in national parks. Pitch a tent at designated campsites for a truly immersive experience. Fall asleep to the sounds of nature and wake up to the sights of a new day dawning. Some of the national parks that have campsite options in the vicinity are Eravikulam National Park in Kerala, Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh, Sariska National Park in Rajasthan, and more.

Water-based activities

Numerous national parks feature untouched lakes, rivers, and water passages, providing ample chances for aquatic adventures. As a result, boat safaris emerge as a primary attraction for tourists visiting these parks. Providing a distinct chance to venture into regions unreachable by land, boat safaris gain significant acclaim, especially in destinations like the Sunderbans and Periyar, where observing wildlife via jeep or elephant proves challenging.

Educational programs

National parks are treasure troves of natural and cultural heritage, and educational programs offer insights into their significance. Join ranger-led programs, guided walks, or interpretive tours to learn about the park's history, geology, and ecology. Gain a deeper appreciation for the land and its inhabitants.

Photography expeditions

Capture the beauty of national parks through the lens of a camera on photography expeditions. From golden sunrises to vibrant sunsets, there's no shortage of breathtaking scenes to photograph. Join workshops or explore on your own, honing your skills while creating lasting memories.

48 Hours in… Moscow

Curious about the history of Russia and the Soviet Union? The Russian capital, Moscow, is the best place to unravel the layers of history that envelop this part of the world. As the founding site, and some say the very heart, of Russia, this city is a treasure trove of monuments, fortresses, churches, and museums built to remember the heroes and battles of its past. You’ll need more than a week to see them all, but if you’re short on time, here’s a guide to a whirlwind trip around Moscow.

The Bolshoi Theatre.

The Bolshoi Theatre.

The First 24 Hours

VISIT: The Kremlin Let’s begin at the historical and spiritual centre of Moscow, the Kremlin. This was once the focal point of the Orthodox Church and also the control centre of Russian political parties. The fortified historical district is enclosed by high walls that are 2km (1.2 mi) long and flanked by the Red Square and St Basil’s Cathedral on the east, the Alexander Garden on the west, Moskva River in the south, and Borovitsky Hill in the north. The entrance ticket includes admission to all five church-museums in the Kremlin, as well as the Patriarch's Palace.

VISIT: Red Square Right outside the Kremlin’s northeastern wall is this massive cobblestoned square that’s also the core of historical Moscow. The 1,036km2 by 388km2 (400 sq mi by 150 sq mi) used to be the former royal citadel and is still the official residence of the President of Russia today. I recommend taking at least a day to visit all the sights on this square, which include the State Historical Museum, St Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum. It’s said that all major streets in Russia lead to the Red Square.

The State Historical Museum at the Red Square.

VISIT: St Basil’s Cathedral The most prominent building on the Red Square (and also the icon of Moscow) is the whimsical St Basil’s Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed. Built from 1555–1561, this world-famous landmark is now a museum that’s open to the public. Take some time to admire its eclectic design — you’ll notice its spirals and towers take the form of a flaming bonfire rising into the sky. There’s no other building in Russia that comes close to this unique masterpiece.

EAT: Traditional Russian food Time for lunch! For a taste of authentic Russian fare close to the Red Square, I recommend heading to The Old Tower, a classic fixture in Moscow’s dining scene and an all-time favourite of both locals and tourists. It’s located in one of the ancient towers of the Kremlin’s wall, and features windows with oak shutters, ornamental upholstery of chairs, and old photos of Russia. Don’t miss the pelemeni (handmade dumplings), pancakes, and borsch.

VISIT: Stroll in Alexander Garden After you’ve filled your stomach, kick back and wander through the green space right next to the Kutafya tower. This was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow and it sprawls along the length of the western Kremlin wall, stretching 865m (2,837 ft) between Moscow Manege and the Kremlin. It’s divided into three separate gardens: the upper garden where you’ll find the tomb of a soldier and an obelisk, the middle garden that surrounds the Kutafya tower, and the lower garden that stretches to the Borovitskaya Tower.

VISIT: Lenin’s Mausoleum Lenin’s Mausoleum is right next to Alexander Garden, so make a beeline to pay respect to the embalmed leader, who has lain here since 1924. Lines can be long so you’ll have to be patient. Photography is not allowed and try to stay silent and respectful. Outside of the mausoleum, you’ll also find the burial ground of several other communist leaders such as Stalin, Brezhnev, and Dzerzhinsky.

SHOP AND ADMIRE: GUM and TSUM Across the Red Square, you’ll find GUM (pronounced “goom”), one of the largest shopping stores in Moscow. If shopping isn’t on your agenda, go in for a quick look anyhow just to admire the stunning building that dates back to 1890. The building also sports an impressive facade that features elements of Russian medieval architecture and a steel framework and glass roof. Across the street is TSUM (pronounced “tsoom”), which sports a similar exterior, packed with high-end retail shops.

GUM shopping mall.

GUM shopping mall.

EAT AND DRINK: Kamchatka To end the day on a different note, knock back some pints of Russian beer at Kamchatka , a cool pub located right in front of TSUM. This two-storey bar is meticulously decorated in Soviet style and its menu complements its interior perfectly. Sway to 1980s Soviet pop songs while trying some old-school Soviet fare and drinking local vodka — this place guarantees the true Russian experience.

The Next 24 Hours

VISIT: Gulag History Museum Hop on the metro system, which is an experience of its town, to get to the Gulag History Museum for a crash course in history. Founded by a well-known historian and former prisoner of Stalin’s labour camps, this museum is dedicated to teaching the world about the history of the Soviet repressive policy and labour camp system. It also acts as a memorial to millions who died in concentration camps.

VISIT: Puskin Museum Art lovers will be happy to find this outstanding art museum complex, which has one of the largest foreign art collections in Russia. Pushkin Museum has more than 700,000 works of different eras from ancient Egypt and ancient Greece up to the beginning of the 21st century. The highlight is perhaps the Dutch masterpieces from the 17th century. Even if you’re not an art lover, you have to come here to visit the café, which will be your next stop.

EAT: Café Pushkin Nearby is the absolutely charismatic Café Pushkin , a recreation of a 19th-century library and saloon that offers the opportunity to time travel. Its baroque-style halls are decked out in antique globes, teak book shelves, and high ceilings. For travellers who love vintage things, this will be heaven. Its food — fit for royalty — isn’t cheap, but you can always just order a drink to experience its ambiance and fantastic views of Tverskoy Boulevard.

VISIT: Gorky Park To escape the busy city vibes, take a stroll in Gorky Park, which is officially named Maxim Gorky's Central Park of Culture & Leisure. The “green lungs” of the city is a popular place for locals to get active and for travellers to experience a bit of local life. Located on the bank of the Moskva River, the park is a great place to go cycling or rollerblading in summer, and ice skating in winter (the ponds freeze and become the city’s biggest ice-skating rink). If you’re still hungry, you can also grab a bite at one of the eateries or open-air bars in the park.

RELAX: Sanduny Banya Going to a banya (sauna) is an essential experience when in Russia. It’s a traditional bathhouse where you strip down, get drenched in extremely cold water, and are then beaten with birch leaves by old ladies (it sounds scarier than it really is!). Sanduny is the oldest banya in Moscow, founded in 1808 and decked out with beautiful, ornate interiors. Today, it’s one of the most popular health centres for locals. There are three bath halls for men and two for women, which include pools, Russian steam rooms, and lounge rooms.

EAT AND PARTY: Krasny Oktyabr End your last night in Moscow with a bang at this funky arts district in the historical centre of Moscow. Dubbed “a city within the city,” Krasny Oktyabr is a former chocolate factory that has been transformed into a hip and cool area packed with trendy bars, restaurants, art galleries, and nightclubs. Some places worth hitting are the art deco style Strelka Bar and the pumping Gipsy club.

U.S. Embassy chef cooked her way from Michigan to Moscow

trek beyond adventures

Michelle Michalenko: "Beyond the traffic madness, Moscow is an amazing city to live in and explore." Source: Personal archive

U.S. Embassy chef Michelle Michalenko gave RBTH tips on sourcing the best ingredients in Moscow, being a vegetarian in Russia, and the top American foods Russians should know.

RBTH: How long have you lived in Moscow? Where in the U.S. did you grow up?

Michelle Michalenko: I've been in Moscow eight years as of January 2014.

I was born in Florida and soon after moved to Kentucky. Then Michigan, California, Texas, Ohio, Chicago and then Moscow. Moving often, for my father's job, seemed normal and always involved new adventures.

I'm fortunate to have lived in so many interesting places and experienced their food and cultures. Summers involved road trips back to Michigan to see my grandparents and cousins. And pick blueberries!

RBTH: How did you get your position as the embassy chef?

M.M.: My previous DCM [deputy chief of mission] saw an ad in The Moscow Times. It was my Moscow dream job. Considering the strong competition, I was fortunate to apply  the next day, interview several times, and was then asked to begin work within days.

RBTH: Do you have some Russian heritage? Which is the origin of your surname?

trek beyond adventures

Moscow’s D.C. embassy chef gives local food a Russian accent

M.M.: My last name is Ukrainian from Dedushka [grandfather] Michalenko who was born on the way to the U.S. in 1900 and grew up in South Dakota. I have very little information on where his parents came from.

RBTH: Describe your typical work day.

M.M.: If there isn’t a luncheon event, I review my day, check on paperwork and emails, organize staff priorities and update the event calendar. If there is a lunch, I go directly into the kitchen. Afternoons are spent preparing for events, recipe testing, or planning menus for upcoming events.

RBTH: Do you mostly prepare American dishes or do you also cook French, Italian and, for example, Russian meals?

M.M.: My training at Le Cordon Bleu was classical French cuisine. My love of travel and exploring new foods brought Asian, Indian, Moroccan, Italian, and now Russian into my repertoire. Formal dinners are planned around food preferences of the guests and what is in season with a focus on American dishes.

RBTH: Where do you get your ingredients?

M.M.: Metro [German chain Metro Cash and Carry], Dorogomilovsky [a large local market], the embassy commissary, and other specialty stores. Hard-to-source ingredients for pastries are ordered from the U.S.

RBTH: I know you are vegetarian, is it hard for you to be vegetarian in Russia? Do you get questions from Russians about this lifestyle?

M.M.: Yes, I was raised a vegetarian, but by the time I was 15, I started eating everything. Today, I am a dedicated Omnivore.

Delicious Russia: Syrniki

Many friends and family prefer vegan or vegetarian menus which I love creating. For work events, I always offer a vegetarian option for guests.

Being a vegetarian is not complicated if you understand and follow the basic food guidelines while eating a balanced diet. Moscow has lots of food choices and more arrive often. Fresh Restaurant was a great addition for Moscow’s health conscious eaters.

RBTH: What’s your favorite Russian food?

M.M.: Blini, buckwheat with onions and mushrooms, Babushka's Olivier salad and Apple Sharlotka ,  pirozhki with cabbage or mushroom filling, syrinki , pelmeni, and fresh kvas.

RBTH: Do you hate dill as much as many foreigners in Russia do? Why do you think foreigners find it weird?

M.M.: Borrowing from Niki Segnit, dill is complex, demanding, and opinionated. I like dill best when it is used in balance with the main ingredient: mushrooms, potatoes, beef, beets, and fish. Dill has a strong sour and grassy flavor that isn't for everyone.

RBTH: Besides hamburgers, what other typically American foods should Russians know?

M.M.: Real Southern barbecue, corn bread (northern and southern varieties), shrimp gumbo, Tex-Mex, fish tacos, warm apple fritters with a cup of warm cider, clam chowder, lobster rolls, my version of macaroni and cheese and my brownies with Maker's Mark ice cream and salted caramel sauce, warm chocolate chip cookies, apple pie, an aged steak in Chicago, wine tastings at a Napa vineyard, wild Michigan huckleberries, breakfast at a dinner along highway 66, a Chicago deep-dish pizza at 2am, and Sunday lunch at Publican in Chicago. The list could continue if you have room….

RBTH: Do you go to American restaurants in Moscow? Which are your favorites?

M.M.: I explore food in Moscow. Not focused on one specific cuisine but follow what is new and interesting. [the website] The Village is full of ideas and I follow several Moscow foodies who Instagram their newest finds. My favorite restaurant is Delicatessen with Chef Ivan Shishkin. He feeds my food soul and I love the people who work there and make it special. If I'm craving American food, I invite friends over and cook.

RBTH: Why do you think Russians like American chain restaurants so much? There is a certain boom in Moscow right now with the arrival of Shake Shack and Krispy Kreme, in addition to the established chains like McDonalds, Subway and Burger King.

M.M.: An interesting question and one that I ask my friends, even strangers! My working theory is that American chain restaurants are new, interesting, easily accessible, and fit even a student’s budget. Shake Shack has great customer service and consistent food quality plus root beer! Fast food isn't my thing and I don't eat it often.

RBTH: What do you like and dislike about Moscow?

M.M.: The traffic in Moscow is very frustrating. While I have a car, I avoid driving. Going to dacha is the exception and then I listen to audible books to pass the long hours in traffic. Babushka prefers country music when we’re stuck in traffic.

Happiness is sharing dacha memories

Beyond the traffic madness, Moscow is an amazing city to live in and explore. Friends make weekend walk-abouts an interesting part of our together time. There are so many interesting facts to learn about the city and building.

RBTH: What do you do in your spare time?

M.M.: When it’s warm, I like to spend time at Babushka’s dacha sitting in the sun or working in the garden.

Walking with my dog, Mika. Exploring Moscow and the surrounding regions, cooking and researching new recipes, and travel when I can.

RBTH: Have you traveled much in Russia? What are your favorite places?

M.M.: Yes, I have. In April 2011, I took the Trans-Siberian from Moscow to Lake Baikal and then Ulan-Ude with friends. We finished in Beijing traveling on the Trans-Mongolian.

Other weekend trips around the Moscow regions and St. Petersburg are perfect for when I have a long weekend off. When my sister still lived in Moscow, we spent weekends together and often explored outside of Moscow.

Nevada Today

Wilderness medicine program director leads a life of adventure, wilderness and sports medicine specialist arthur "tony" islas, m.d., wields his expertise on and off the path.

David Fiore and Arthur Islas holding up a sign that says "Wilderness Medicine" in a forest next to a waterfall.

Islas (right), along with his collaborators like David Fiore, M.D., (left), see an increased demand for doctors with a unique, varied skillset and are working to build a curriculum that would attract prospective wilderness medicine fellows.

Although Arthur “Tony” Islas typically applies his wilderness medicine expertise in treacherous outdoor environments, it came in handy far sooner than expected while on an airplane to South America.

On the excursion to Argentina, Islas found himself diverting a flight to land in Panama so that a traveler on board could receive emergency surgery after his quick assessment deduced life-threatening abdominal pain. The patient has since recovered.

Mere minutes later, he was summoned again to help a flight attendant free a utensil wedged between her recently crowned teeth.

“And that was all before we had even gotten there!” Islas said with a laugh.

The call to adventure

Islas, M.D., MPH, FAWM, FAMSSM, CAQ-Sports Medicine, is the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine's (UNR Med) director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship , and a professor in the Department of Family Medicine, through which he founded the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship program.

His work takes him around the world. His most recent adventure had him serving as a non-paid consultant for Global Rescue, a program that provides medical evacuation to adventurers. Although his travel expenses were covered, Islas specifies that his consultation is “ non-paid” to avoid any conflict of interest.

While in Argentina, Islas worked with local medical professionals to develop new treatment approaches for those scaling Aconcagua, one of the famous “ Seven Summits” and the highest mountain in the world outside of Asia.

Eric Johnson and Arthur Islas taking a selfie with the Aconcagua Mountains in the background.

“I was an educator and resource for the physicians who were there at the base camp,” he said. “We worked within the Argentinian health care system to try to put together a better system of care for the climbers that are attempting Aconcagua. ”

Islas and his partners noticed an increase in altitude-related illnesses on the mountain, specifically, High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). This was in addition to multiple other injuries and illnesses including frostbite requiring amputation and various other levels of altitude sickness.

Although Islas and the local physicians can’t say for certain why there are more serious cases of HAPE at Aconcagua, he said the uptick in maladies may be partially attributed to an influx of “adventure travelers” who learn about places like Aconcagua from social media and may not invest as much time into practice and planning before attempting the climb.

Islas' friend, Wongchuu Sherpa, giving Islas a head massage.

That’s not to deter people from seeking out adventure, for Islas himself is an avid traveler and explorer. He’s been to Everest more than once and speaks fondly of the community he’s formed there. His office is filled with relics from his journeys: colorful Tibetan prayer flags, a small tapestry depicting the Aztec god of medicine, countless trophies, and a banner for the Wongchhu Sherpa Memorial Hospital in Nepal, named for Islas’ late friend and beloved Everest sherpa.

Even back in Reno, Nevada the adventure never stops for Islas. Between reviewing X-rays for student athletes, recruiting medical fellows for the programs he oversees, and planning out workshops for local organizations, Islas wields all his medical titles daily. Although family, sports and wilderness medicine may seem disparate on paper, to Islas they are all deeply connected. That intersection is where he finds the most joy and fulfillment.

“I’ve always been a wilderness guy,” he said.

Islas knew early on that it would be a focus for him, but when he was first starting out as a doctor, he was the “border health guy” in El Paso, Texas, where he completed some of his medical study.

“I was on the U.S.-Mexico border for a number of years, and I ran a series of clinics way out in the boonies,” he said. “And one of the things about Texas, whether you’re on the border or not, is that if you work in a small town, you better be on the sidelines for Friday night football. It’s a big deal.”

Sports as a focus for his medical practice was a perfect fit.

“ I started doing that as a regular family physician and realized that this is something I really liked and wanted to get more involved in,” he said.

As an avid outdoorsman himself, he knew firsthand that, “ those out there in the wilderness, those are athletes. And if I became a sports medicine physician, it would allow me to be a better wilderness physician. So that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Islas took a sabbatical year to complete a sports medicine fellowship, then returned to El Paso to build the sports medicine program at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. That led to an opportunity to move to Reno in 2015.

“ One of the reasons we chose to move out here was because it gave me all the foundation I needed to build the wilderness medicine program,” said Islas. “ We have every type of environment you could ever want, whether it’s subterranean, whether it’s desert, forest, high altitude. If I want to get to the beach, it’s not too far. It has everything I could ever want for a wilderness medicine educational laboratory. What better place to do this?”

Islas teaching a students out in the mountains near the UNR Med campus.

There were “ like minds” here as well, Islas said, citing other members of the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship team, including Richard Williams, M.D., David Fiore, M.D., Dan Spogen, M.D., and Gary Johnson, M.D., who first spearheaded the University’s student elective in wilderness medicine in 1996. As far as the team knows, it’s the oldest program of its kind in the country. A quick glance at the team’s biography page reveals a united passion for adventuring, education, and medicine.

Islas beams with pride talking about his contributions to this team, but another role he celebrates is being the medical director for Great Basin National Park, where he oversees medical operations for park visitors.

“I always say, ‘I hold two of the greatest Nevada jobs in medicine,’” said Islas.

‘Ready for whatever’s next’

Islas and his collaborators see an increased demand for doctors with a unique, varied skillset. He’s working on building a curriculum that would attract prospective wilderness medicine fellows and send them on expeditions around the world, like a three-week rotation serving at a Himalayan hospital.

Islas encourages aspiring medical professionals to seek out any learning opportunity they can find.

“If you’re a health care provider or health care student, getting into the wilderness medical society is a great place to start,” he said. “And for someone who isn’t yet in the medical sciences but wants to learn more about it, look around for wilderness first aid trainings. If you spend a lot of time in the outdoors, it’s something you should investigate anyway.”

And as for Islas, more adventures are imminent, including potential excursions to Mongolia or the African continent. He’ll be ready for whatever’s next.

“You never know what will come up,” he said. “The world is wide.”
