The main way to get to Rottnest Island is by ferry, with daily departures from both Fremantle and Perth. It’s cheaper and quicker to get the ferry to Rottnest Island from Fremantle, with same day return ferry tickets costing just $79 AUD and the journey taking around 30 minutes each-way. Ferries can be booked online through Get Your Guide, and it’s worth booking in advance as tickets do sometimes sell out.

Alternatively, if you want to take the ferry from Perth the journey takes around 90 minutes and costs $119 AUD per person. Ferries depart from the Barrack Street Jetty in the CBD, and cruise along the Swan River before sailing over to Rottnest. These ferries also regularly sell out, so we recommend booking now to ensure your preferred date!

How to get around Rottnest Island

The three main ways to get around Rottnest Island are on foot, by bike, or by bus. For the purpose of this Rottnest Island itinerary you will need to rent a bike or take the bus, as there isn’t enough time to see everything if you opt to walk.

Arguably the most convenient way to get around the island is to rent a bike, as that way you can go at your own pace and won’t have to spend time waiting for buses between different points on the island. It costs just $30 AUD to rent a bike for the day on Rottnest, and the roads are well paved for cycling – making it a lovely way to see the island. There are also plenty of bike racks near the main attractions to lock up your bike whilst you explore.

Get Your Guide offer a convenient package where you can book a return ferry ticket plus bike hire for a day trip to Rottnest Island for $125 AUD per person from Fremantle or $150 AUD per person from Perth. This option is a great time saver as you don’t need to arrange rental once you get to the island, and can simply pick up your bike and be on your way.

If you don’t fancy cycling around the island then the best alternative is to take the hop-on-hop-off bus. This bus service costs $25 AUD and makes 19 stops around the island, with departures every half an hour.

Although there are 19 stops, you won’t have enough time to visit them all in one day via bus – so you need to prioritise which stops you want to visit. Thankfully, this itinerary covers the best places to visit on Rottnest Island – so you know exactly where to get on and off the bus!

The main disadvantage of taking the bus is that you can end up waiting quite a while for a bus to take you to your next stop. In some instances there isn’t enough space for everyone waiting for the bus, which means you have to wait another half an hour before your next chance of a lift to your next stop.

It is a convenient way to get around, but considering the cost there probably should be more regular buses. We did take the bus ourselves, but ended up walking at points as we got fed up of waiting for the next bus!

Rottnest Island Day Trip Itinerary

Thomson bay.

The ferries to Rottnest all arrive into the island’s main settlement at Thomson Bay, so kick off your day trip by exploring the town briefly. Wander along a few different streets, and it shouldn’t be long until you encounter one or more of the famous resident quokkas.

There are around 10,000 of these cute marsupials on Rottnest Island, but they’re easiest to see in and around the town. They are nocturnal animals by nature, but there tend to be quite a few awake during the day in the town. Outside of the town it’s a lot less likely you will spot them, so make sure to take this chance to grab a few pictures!

If you want to find out more about the quokkas then head to the Rottnest Voluntary Guides Association . The guides here are extremely helpful and informative, and they run free tours to help you see some quokkas – which is useful if you’re struggling to find any!

One important thing to note is that you shouldn’t feed or touch quokkas. They’re very friendly and inquisitive animals, but it can be harmful to them if you touch or feed them – so make sure not to do this on your visit!

Although it can be tempting to stay with the cute quokkas for hours and hours, it’s best to not spend too long here as there’s lots more to see on the island. There are some restaurants and cafes in the town, as well as a few shops and a bakery if you want to get any drinks or snacks to take with you. We recommend getting some water if you don’t already have some, as there are very limited places to get water or food around the island.

A must do aon any day trip itinerary to Rottnest Island is seeing the cute Quokkas

Parker Point

Once you’ve left Thomson Bay, the next stop on your Rottnest itinerary is Parker Point. If you’ve rented a bike it’s around a 20-25 minute ride (5 kilometres) via the coastal route, or if you’ve opted for the bus then it’s stop number 5.

Parker Point is home to a lovely beach with stunning blue waters, and is the first snorkelling spot on your day trip to Rottnest Island. Access to the beach is via a set of stairs, so it may not be accessible if you have mobility issues. Thankfully you can still get lovely views of the stunning water from above, although it’s probably only worth stopping here if you do go down to the beach.

The main reason to stop here is to explore the Parker Point Marine Sanctuary Zone , which is home to some brilliant snorkelling just off from the shore. Parker Point boasts a biodiverse habitat and abundance of marine life amongst its extensive coral reef.

It’s a little swim out from shore to reach the best snorkelling here, but it’s not too far to swim from the beach. The visibility at Parker Point is extremely good, and you will have the possibility to see lots of colourful fish and even turtles, lobsters, crabs, and stingrays with a bit of luck!

If you’re extremely lucky, you may even be able to see dolphins whilst snorkelling at Parker Point. We saw two dolphins as we were snorkelling, but only managed to see them jumping out of the water a short distance from us. Even though we couldn’t see them underwater, it was still an amazing encounter – so you might get lucky too!

For more information on snorkelling at Parker Point, make sure to read our guide to the best places to snorkel on Rottnest Island – which also covers your next stop, Little Salmon Bay, and your final stop, The Basin.

When you’ve finished snorkelling and dried off, it’s time to head to Little Salmon Bay. It only takes a few minutes from Parker Point to Little Salmon Bay by bike, but if you’re travelling by bus you will need to wait until the next scheduled departure. Alternatively, it’s a 10 minute walk between the two which will save you having to wait for a bus.

Sam snorkelling in the clear waters of Rottnest Island a must do activity on this day trip itinerary

Little Salmon Bay

Little Salmon Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on Rottnest Island, and is bound to be a highlight of your day trip itinerary. It’s located on the south side of the island by bus stop number 6.

This picturesque cove is home to stunning turquoise water and pristine white sand, making it a perfect place to relax. If you’re coming to Rottnest in search of beaches, it doesn’t get much better than this!

In addition to its beauty, Little Salmon Bay is another great spot to go snorkelling. The Little Salmon Bay snorkel trail covers around 700 meters, giving you the opportunity to see an array of marine life – including lobsters, octopuses, and eagle rays.

Along the snorkel trail you will pass a variety of different underwater habitats, including rocky reefs, limestone formations and seagrass meadows. The visibility is wonderful too, which makes it easy to spot plenty of colourful fish and amazing marine life as you snorkel.

This definitely ranks as one of our favourite places to visit on Rottnest Island, thanks to its incredible natural beauty. It’s a popular spot to visit, so it can get quite busy – but that’s only because its one of the most pristine spots on the island!

Turquoise waters at Little Salmon Bay on Rottnest Island

Next on your Rottnest day trip itinerary is a visit to the island’s West End. The landscape is quite different in this part of the island, thanks to its rugged coastline and cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean.

One of the best ways to see this part of the island is by hiking the Ngank Wen Bidi loop , which covers almost 8 kilometres. It’s a tight squeeze to fit this hike into you Rottnest day trip, but if you manage your time well then it is possible!

Thankfully, it’s also possible to discover West End without doing the hike. Bus stop 11 is located near the tip of West End, and there are some bike racks in the area to store your bike.

The bus stop is located roughly in between the Cathedral Rocks viewing platform and Cape Vlamingh viewing platform – both of which are great spots to visit. These viewing platforms give you stunning views of the vast Indian Ocean and interesting rock formations, as well as offering the chance to see fur seals and dolphins. It’s even possible to see migrating humpback whales between late August and November if you’re lucky!

West End is one of the quieter spots on Rottnest Island, with many people missing it out from their itinerary. It’s a beautiful and more secluded spot to visit, so it’s well worth including on your trip!

Two seals lying on the rocks at Rottnest Island

Finish your day trip itinerary to Rottnest Island with a visit to The Basin – one of the island’s most popular beaches. It’s easily accessible by bike, but if you’re taking the bus you will need to get off at Geordie Bay and walk from there. If you don’t fancy the walk then you can always opt to visit the Geordie Bay beach or the secluded Little Parakeet Bay.

The Basin itself is home to soft white sand and sparking blue water that will make you want to jump right in! It’s a great place to relax near to the end of your Rottnest Island itinerary, whether you’re looking to sunbathe or go for a dip in the sea.

As well as being a beautiful beach, The Basin is also an incredible snorkelling spot. It’s home to huge schools of fish, which can be seen just a few metres from shore. The Leeuwin Current surrounds the island and is one of the reasons for the incredible marine life found at this spot.

Lots of small fish seen underwater at the Basin on Rottnest Island a great addition to a day trip itinerary here

Facilities at The Basin include BBQs, toilets, and outdoor showers – which are great for getting sand off when you’re leaving the beach. Most of the other beaches on Rottnest don’t have facilities, so it’s a welcome change and a convenient place to get sand off before you leave the island.

It’s a short cycle or around a 10-minute walk from The Basin back to the main settlement at Thomson Bay. There should still be time to have see a few more quokkas depending on when your ferry leaves, and we saw plenty on the short walk back into town. It’s easier to find some quokkas to yourself here, as most people tend to see them in the town – but please remember not to feed or touch them!

If you get back to the town before 5pm then we suggest that you get a treat from the Rottnest Bakery to keep you going until dinner. They even have ‘quokka’ tarts – custard tarts with a quokka design on them! The ferries depart from where you were dropped off, so make sure to be there in plenty of time to make sure you don’t miss your departure!

Tips for your Rottnest Island day trip itinerary

Choose a Clear Day : Rottnest Island’s beauty is best enjoyed on a clear day when the sun casts a radiant glow on its pristine beaches and sparkling waters. Clear skies also ensure better visibility for snorkelling, photography, and wildlife spotting.

Stay Hydrated and Protected : The Australian sun can be intense, especially on an island with limited shade. Carrying plenty of water is essential to stay hydrated throughout your adventure. Dehydration can quickly dampen the experience, so regular water intake is key. Along with water, bring a high SPF sun cream. Sunburn can occur surprisingly quickly, even on cloudy days, so reapply sun cream regularly on your day trip in Rottnest Island.

Arrive Early : To truly embrace all that Rottnest Island has to offer, aim to arrive early. Catching the first ferry of the day gives you a full day to explore the island’s diverse offerings. Early arrival means quieter times at popular spots, a better chance of interacting with the friendly quokkas, and more time to enjoy activities like biking, swimming, and exploring the island’s historical sites. With fewer crowds, you can soak in the serene beauty of the island and find your own little piece of paradise.

The ultimate guide for the best Rottnest Island day trip (2024 Updated)

The Basin Rottnest

Post updated January 2024

I’m a frequent visitor to Rottnest Island and I simply think that Rottnest is the best day trip from Perth. Although the ferry price can be a sting to the wallet for any budget-conscious travellers, a Rottnest Island day trip is worth it,  especially if you plan it right.

Table of Contents

How to get to Rottnest Island

Rottnest is located 18 km off the coast of Perth city. You can get there by private boat, ferry or air services. Some crazy people also swim there every year but that’s another story.

Ferry services to Rottnest

There are three different companies that have ferry services to Rottnest. These leave several times a day throughout the day from Fremantle, Perth and Hillarys.

Although there are frequent ferry services to Rotto it’s advisable to pre-book your ticket at least one day in advance to ensure that you get a spot on the boat.

Rottnest Ferry services:

  • Rottnest Express

Rottnest Fast Ferries

Rottnest Ferry

Fremantle to Rottnest Island

Fremantle to Rottnest Island ferries leave from the B-Shed at Victoria Quay or Fremantle Northport and take about 30 minutes to get to and from the island.

The B-Shed is located behind Fremantle Train Station and is the best option if you’re reliant on public transport.

If you’re planning on leaving your car in Fremantle, the ferry terminal at Northport has cheaper parking than B-Shed.

Perth to Rottnest Island

From Perth, you can catch the ferry to Rottnest from Barrack Street Jetty. This is a more expensive option and will take about 90 minutes to get to Rottnest Island. There’s also a transit stop in Fremantle to pick up more passengers.

The advantage is that you get a lovely cruise of the beautiful Swan River and this is well worth the extra time (and money) if you’re a first time visitor to Perth.

Hillarys to Rottnest Island

Rottnest Ferries depart from Hillarys Boat Harbour and take approximately 45 minutes. This is a good option if you’re staying in Perth’s northern suburbs. However, ferries from Hillarys are less frequent and only travel two or three times per day. They’re also slightly more expensive than departing from Fremantle.

The cheapest way to get to Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island beach

Most Rottnest Island ferry companies advertise return fares for $49. This, however, excludes the $20 admission fee for the island. There are also additional fees for bicycles, extra luggage, extended stays and sports equipment.

In short, tickets to Rottnest without any special discounts are at least $79 without any extra luggage or bikes. The booking systems on the website are a cumbersome affair and you’ll need to select various options before you find out how much the final cost is.

To find cheap tickets to Rottnest Island, it’s worth checking the deals or special offers with each ferry company. They generally offer different perks under the deals or special offers section on their websites.

Some ferry service companies offer mid-week discounts and free travel for kids if you sign up to their club. I’ve also seen offers for free bike transport, discounts for afternoon departures and twilight specials.

See the special deals sections here:

 Rottnest Express

You can also find discount coupons for ferry services to Rottnest in the Entertainment book, West Rewards and sometimes on Groupon. An additional tip is if you’re a RAC member, you may also find cheap tickets to Rottnest on the RAC website.

Rottnest Island Tours

There are several convenient tours to Perth to Rottnest. If you’re a visitor to Perth this is your best option as they can also include pick up from your accommodation. The added bonus is that you can pre-book and easily cancel if your plans change.

Rottnest Island Ferry and Bike Package

This includes the ferry trip and all day bike hire. Pick up from your accommodation can also be included.

See prices and availability here.

Ferry and Bus Tour

This includes the Ferry trip and a 1.45 hour bus tour to explore the island. Departure point is either from Perth or Fremantle with a selection of departure times.

Air services to Rottnest

You can get to Rottnest by air. Flights are available with Rottnest Air Taxi Ozwest Aviation Swan River Seaplanes and Rotorvation if you prefer rotary aircraft.

How to get around Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island Day Trip

There are no cars on the island and Rottnest is made for exploring on two wheels.

If you don’t want to cruise around on a bike, the Rottnest Island Explorer bus service is a hop on hop off service that does a circuit around the whole island. This is your only option of public transport on the island.

The bus leaves every half hour from the main bus stop and stops at Rottnest’s best beaches and attractions including Wadjemup Lighthouse.

Tickets for the bus cost $30 for adults and $15 for children and concession cardholders.

It’s best to get bus tickets in advance during busy holiday times. The queue for tickets on the island can get very long. One option is to book the ferry and bus tour package.

Rottnest Island Restaurants and Shops

Shops, cafes and restaurants are located in the Main Settlement near the jetty. This is where you’ll find a well-stocked general store, selection of cafes, restaurants, bakery and a boutique.

The only other place with a shop and cafe is Geordie Bay. There are also food trucks serving coffee and snacks at The Basin and The West End. The rest of the island is pure nature and there are no options to buy water or food anywhere else.

If you’re venturing off on your bike, make sure that you have some supplies with you. There are a few water taps located around the island with drinking water but definitely take some with you.

Rottnest Island Bike Hire

Rottnest Island day trip

Rottnest Island is car-free and most of the fun is had by cruising around on two wheels. My advice is if you know how to ride a bike, get a bike for your Rottnest Island day trip.

You can either bring your own bike with you which costs about $20 to take on the ferry.  The main hassle is that you need to bring it to the ferry terminal. Once at the terminal, it’s a matter of simply dropping off the bike and it will be loaded and unloaded off the boat for you.

The second option is to hire a bike. Most ferry companies offer a ferry and bike package. You can collect your bike as soon as you get off the boat on Rottnest. Costs for bike rentals are usually $30 per day.

You can also get bicycle rental on Rottnest Island with Rottnest Island Pedal and Flipper . This is more time consuming because you need to walk to the hire place, fill out a form, choose your bike, grab a helmet etc, all before you can set off. Details on Rottnest bike hire is here .

How much time do you need for Rottnest?

Geordie Bay Rottnest Island

If you’re planning a Rottnest Island day trip, it’s advisable to spend at least six hours on Rottnest Island. This will give you time to get your bearings, explore beaches or other attractions and have some downtime at a cafe or pub before you return to Perth.

Where to see Quokkas on Rottnest Island

The quokkas are a definite highlight for any day trip to Rottnest and it’s unlikely that you’ll leave without seeing this cute attraction.

The Rottnest quokkas are used to interacting with humans and turn up in all sorts of locations all around the island.

I’ve seen quokkas at the pub, trying to sneak into the supermarket and on the beach. I even came across a very chilled quokka peacefully snoozing under a table at the bakery during the height of the holiday season, completely unperturbed at the hustle and bustle around him.

The quokka selfie has become so famous that even the most respectable looking adults will lie on the floor of the pub to get the perfect quokka selfie.

As outgoing and happy as they seem, please remember that they are wild animals. As such never feed or touch them.

When is the best time to visit Rottnest Island?

The Basin Rottnest Island

If you’re visiting for the first time, you’ll definitely want clear, blue skies, lots of sunshine and little wind. The beaches are spectacular and you’ll want to see them at their best.

That said, any time of the year is good. Summer is perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The cooler months are excellent for cycling, hiking and the chance to see the migrating whales.

The wind is another factor that you’ll want to consider. If it’s windy in Perth, you can be sure that it will be even windier on Rottnest Island.

Consider the wind direction when you start cycling. If it is a day with the strong southerly wind, you can find sheltered beaches on the northern side that are protected from the wind.

Rottnest gets very busy during school holiday periods. However, I’ve never found this to be a problem and if you pre-book your ferry ticket it’s unlikely that you won’t get a spot on the day that you want to travel.

Once you arrive on Rottnest Island the crowds disperse and it’s still possible to have a little beach or bay all to yourself.

What to do on Rottnest Island

Most of the island’s activities centre around bicycles, spectacular beaches and natural attractions. However, there are plenty of other activities to be enjoyed on Rotto too.

If you’re visiting for the first time make the Visitor’s Centre your first port of call to get all the information about available activities. The Visitor’s Centre is located at the foot of the jetty at Thomson Bay.

The exceptionally helpful heritage guides are also an excellent source of information and you’ll see their happy faces around the Main Settlement area wearing bright yellow shirts. Say hi and learn a few historical facts about Rottnest.

Most first-time visitors to Rottnest Island gravitate to Thompson Bay. While this is a good first port of call, make sure that you venture of a bit further and see some prettier beaches. The most accessible from Thompson Bay are Pinky’s Beach and Basin.

Here are some ideas about things to do on Rottnest Island

  • Explore Rottnest’s 63 beaches and bays.  The best ones will depend on the time of day and weather conditions, especially the wind. Some favourites though include The Basin, Pinky Beach, Salmon Bay, Parakeet Bay and Armstrong Bay but the list goes on and on.
  • Take a quokka selfie. I haven’t succeeded in this yet but everyone from Roger Federer to Margot Robbie is doing it.
  • Go snorkelling. Rottnest has some of the best snorkelling spots in the state.  There are underwater snorkelling trails at Parker Point and Little Salmon Bay.
  • Have a drink at Hotel Rottnest Samphire or Pinky’s
  • See the seals at Cathedral Rock at the West End.
  • Hike the Wadjemup Bidi Trails. If you love hiking, explore the best of the island on this superb network of trails. Get the full trail details here .
  • Play golf. Rottnest Island has an 18-hole golf course and country club.
  • Kids activities vary during the school holiday season.
  • Go skydiving. See Rottnest from above with Skydive Geronimo. See how it’s done here.
  • Learn history. Rottnest has some interesting history that can be explored on a range of guided and self-guided tours.
  • Visit the lighthouse.
  • Catch the Rottnest Train. Trains leave from the quaint Settlement Train Station and go to Oliver Hill where you can view remnants of WWII.

What to pack for a day trip to Rottnest

If you’re planning on a day trip to Rottnest Island you probably won’t want to pack too much gear – especially if you’ll be riding a bike all day. If you have got extra stuff, you can hire lockers near the Visitor’s Centre to stash your gear.

Here are some of the essential’s that you might want to pack:

  • Sun protection. Don’t forget to slip, slop, slap. I’ve seen many tourists on the return ferry looking like beetroots. Don’t be that person. See my sun safety tips here.
  • Food and water. Things cost more on Rottnest Island if you’re budget conscious bring a few snacks and a water bottle. Water refills and potable water fountains are located at several spots around the island.
  • Snorkelling gear. Rottnest has some incredibly accessible snorkelling spots. If you don’t have a snorkel and mask you can hire them from Pedal and Flippers .
  • Selfie stick – because no trip to Rotto is complete without a quokka selfie.
  • Beachwear in summer and an extra fleece of windcheater in winter. It does get breezy even in summer so bring a jumper.

Staying on Rottnest Island

Rottnest Accommodation

Rottnest has a range of accommodation options. This includes self-contained holiday units, cabins, hotel rooms, the new Discovery Park glamping resort as well as a campground.

Accommodation can be booked via the Rottnest Island page here . Note, that it can be hard to secure accommodation for units, cabins and apartment, especially during peak seasons.  Rotto is WA’s best-loved holiday spot and many people book 18 months in advance to get their holiday units.

Find some options for hotels and the excellent new glamping resort here .

An easy and affordable way to stay overnight on Rottnest, even during peak season is to take a tent and camp on Rottnest Island. See how it’s done here.

Good choice, relaxing on a beach is definitely one of the best things you can do on Rottnest.

🥐Thompson Bay

☕ Geordie Bay

Pinky Beach

Although we have designed this itinerary more for people visiting for the day, it can easily be extended by spending longer at each location. If you are lucky enough to be spending more than a day on the island, then you are definitely in for a treat.

If you would prefer to take a Full Island Tour , instead of figuring it out for yourself. Then you also have that option.

Where Is Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is found on the West Coast of Western Australia. Close to the capital of Perth, the distance from Rottnest Island to Perth is 33kms. The island is on 19km2 which is actually the same size as Fremantle .

How To Get To Rottnest Island

For most people, there is only one way of getting to Rotto and that is by taking the  Rottnest Island ferries . Unless you have your own private boat which is the other option, the ferry is going to be the quickest, cheapest, and most efficient way of getting to this magical island. The journey from Perth to Rottnest Island will take 30 minutes each way.

Closer to the winter months the sea can get choppy so if you get travel sick like us we recommend sitting at the rear of the boat and taking your medication beforehand.

We recommend booking your Rottnest Island ferry in advance as it sells out quickly in the summer months. When booking your ferry to Rottnest Island you have the option to add on your bicycle and snorkel hire for the day, this can save you time and money.

Queuing up at the Rottnest bike hire store on the island can take a long time.

Quokka’s on Rottnest Island

First things first there are around 10,000 Quokkas on Rottnest Island and with this itinerary, you will see a lot. We request that you refrain from feeding or touching them, especially at the settlement. After you get back on the ferry, it’s the locals that have to deal with the ill animals.

A Quokka is in the same marsupial family as the Kangaroo🦘 Its basically a combination of a kangaroo and a large rat but it got a great smile. It soared to fame with the hashtag #quokkaselfie which saw these cuties become Instagram famous without them even knowing.

They can only be found here in Western Australia, mainly on Rottnest Island. They have no natural predators so they are not scared of humans.

Quokka selfies are actually really hard to get. It involves you laying on the floor, in their poop and hoping it looks up. We’ve found the trick to it is if someone else holds a leaf above the camera, it will look up and you will get that award-winning smile on camera!

THEY SHOULD NOT BE FED HUMAN FOOD! We can not make this more clear! Their little bodies can not handle our food and it makes them sick. Unfortunately, we are witness to the ‘resident crack head quokkas’ around the shops.

These quokkas are addicted to sugar and are much more aggressive than the others on the island. We have even named one Mad Max that lives outside the bakery because he’s got so many battle scars.

What to bring for your Rottnest Island day trip

With some of the most beautiful beaches, clearest water and the best snorkelling we’ve ever seen, Rotto makes for the perfect beach day.

🥽 Snorkel and Flippers

👟 Shoes/clothes to cycle in – Bike shorts are your best friend!

🥾 Wet shoes to explore the rock pools and rough sea bed

🍻 Eske with some beers

🎶 Speaker for music in your room/beach/bike basket

How to get around on your Rottnest Island day trip

↠ The Island express bus 🚌  There are no vehicles on Rottnest Island

You can’t rely on Uber here I’m afraid. The only two ways of getting around are either on the Islands Hop on Hop Off Bus or to cycle. The bus is roughly $20 for the whole day and the best way to explore if the weather is too hot. This bus goes in a clockwise direction and is one way. It takes roughly around an hour to do a full loop on the bus.

↠  Rottnest Island bike hire 🚴

You can rent a bike (Helmets are mandatory) from the ferry companies which are roughly around $30. You can get an e-bike for $60 and $200 deposit. We would suggest bringing your own bike and LOCK, unfortunately, Rottnest is not immune from crime. This way you can save money on bike hire and you know you will have a good bike for the day.

Beware Rottnest is extremely hilly, so a medium level of fitness is recommended for cycling around the whole island. This takes a few hours to complete…not that we have managed to get that far!

Living on Rottnest Island

TRAVEL TIP ↠ If you want to see lots of places and are only here for the day, we recommend just jumping on the bus and saving your self from exhaustion!

The Settlement

The Settlement is the only area of shops on the island.

  • General store (IGA prices)
  • Clothes Store👚
  • The Lane Cafe ☕
  • Frankie’s Italian🍕
  • Thompsons and the Hotel.
  • There is one more General store and cafe near Geordie Bay but that is it.

If you are headed out all day, please take enough drinking water as most of the drinking taps aren’t always working. As we are writing this blog post we are currently working at the Bakery so we have to include how good the Pies and coffee are!

You can’t come to Rotto without having got your self a morning pie for all the exercise you are about to do 🙂

Rottnest Island Day Trip – Our itinerary

Each stop we have listed is accessible via the Rottnest Island Explorer bus and by bicycle. We highly recommend following this route we have created, because if you aren’t already aware, Western Australia can become very windy in the afternoons.

This means that the south side of the island takes the force of this wind in the afternoon. The sea can become rough and the beaches slightly unpleasant. An example is pictured below, Salmon Bay which is on the Southside in the morning and afternoon.

Salmon Bay in the Morning

Thomson Bay Rottnest – Stop 1 🥐

Your ferry will pull into Thompson bay and it is here where you can either hire a bike or purchase a day ticket for the bus. If you plan to cycle we suggest pre-booking your bike hire as you can be waiting for a while in the queue.

If you’re lazy like us, the bus you will need is called the Island explorer Hop on Hop Off ticket. This is $20 for the whole day and you can use it as many times throughout the day as possible. The bus drivers also sell bottles of water!

TRAVEL TIP ↠ Stock up on food and water in the Settlement as there is nothing around the island until you reach Geordie Bay.

Distance between Thomson Bay and Parker Point is 5KM’s

Parkers Point Rottnest  – Stop 2 🏊🏼‍♂️

(1 KM in-between )

Your first stop is one of the best places on the island for snorkelling. Parkers Point is a sheltered bay thanks to the limestone reef edge being so far away from the shoreline.

You will find stairs which lead down to a small beach where you can put on your snorkel and head out to explore the magical world under the sea. Parker point has a designated snorkel trail which is clearly marked out in the water with buoys. If you are on the Explorer Bus this is Bus Stop 5

Parker Point

Salmon Bay Rottnest Island- Stop 3

Once finished at Parkers Point head back up to the main road. Take a short walk to Salmon bay along the coastline to relax at our favourite beach. On the way look out for the huge Osprey nest on one of the rocky outcrops.

The water is still, the sand is soft and there is plenty of shade near the rocks. This is also home to some amazing underwater rock formations and holes to swim through! Salmon Bay is stop 6  on the bus route.

Living on Rottnest Island (7)

Distance between Salmon Bay and Wadjemup Lighthouse 3.3KM’s

Rottnest Island Lighthouse / Wadjemup Lighthouse –  Stop 4 💡

If you are on the bus jump off at Bus Stop 8 and follow the Wadjemup Walking Trail to reach the lighthouse entrance. Alternatively, those who are on bikes following the curving road up the hill to the top.

There are two lighthouses on Rottnest Island and this is the one you can enter and check out the 360-degree view of the island. (Opening times vary and there is a small entrance. Check all the up to date details at the visitors centre.)

TRAVEL TIP ↠ There is also a new Coffee Truck here called Lexi’s on Rotto

Distance between Wadjemup Lighthouse and The West End 6.4KM’s

The West End Rottnest – Stop 5 🎣

If you are on a tight schedule, you might want to give this one a miss. This stop is the furthest point of the island which can be one hell of a cycle. That being said we would highly recommend trying to see this stop if you can.

The landscape is dramatically different and there are some spectacular views. This stop has a boardwalk that looks out over the cliffs and you can look down into Fish Hook Bay.

As you walk back towards the Bus stop don’t forget to take the walking trail out the Cathedral Rocks viewing platform on the left. Here you can see New Zealand fur seals playing around in the water.

Distance between The West End and Geordie Bay 9.3KM’s

West End Rottnest Island - Unexplored Footsteps

Keen to try out a boat trip on Rottnest? Check out our Rottnest Express Adventure Boat review here.

Geordie Bay Rottnest – Stop 6  ☕

You will pass several coves and beaches all of which are unique and have their own features. Once you arrive at Geordie Bay it’s time for a break.

Stop off at the Geordie Bay Cafe for some lunch or a coffee and rest your tired legs. This is Bus Stop 19 the last stop on the circular route.

Distance between Geordie Bay and Thompson Bay 2KM’s

Pink Lake Rottnest – Stop 7

Once you has left Geordie bay you will pass the famous Rottnest Island Pink lake on your right-hand side and Longreach bay on your left. The pink salt lake will only appear pink if there is enough water in it for the chemical reaction to occur.

It can get winding around the lake as the land is flat and exposed. Stick to the track next to Geordie Bay which provides shelter from the Western Australia winds in the afternoon.

The Basin Rottnest Island – Stop 8

The Basin on Rottnest Island is one of the most popular beach. Due to its close location to the settlement where you can find many of the shops and restaurants. The Basin makes for an ideal beach to visit for families with children.

The outer reef provides shelter on the beach and creates huge swimming area, these become extremely impressive at low tide when the water is crystal clear, shallow and warm. The Basin is the perfect place to practise your snorkelling, it doesn’t compare to other parts of the island such as Parkers Point, but its a great place to start.

There is also a toilet block, BBQ’s and picnic benches at the Basin.

Pinkys beach rottnest island

Via Long Reach, The Basin, Pinky Beach and Bathurst Lighthouse.

Pinky Beach Rottnest – Stop 9 👙

Pinky beach is at the foot off Rottnest’s new Glamping experience, Discovery Rottnest Island Parks. Here you can relax on the beach or head into Pinkys for a drink and get the best view of sunset over the Bathurst Lighthouse.

You will be extremely sheltered from the wind and the bays themselves are nice and calm.

Day Trip extras on Rottnest Island

Rottnest express adventure boat tour, what to expect on rottnest express adventure tour.

Expect to see lots of wildlife and learn a great deal about the history of the island. This tour is on an extremely safe boat which seats around 25-30 passengers. With 900 Horsepower, this vessel can get around the island in no time at all.

Weather permitted, this tour goes all around the island, focusing on the West End where the New Zealand fur seals have permanent residency. On our tour the swell was very big so we did fly through the air, and I did scream a few times. That being said, we felt very safe the whole time.

If you manage to get Dez the tour guide then you are very lucky. He made our tour hilarious and knows so much about the island as he is also a permanent resident on Rottnest Island.

Between September and November, is the season for Whale Watching on Rottnest Island. Get up close and personal with the planets largest creatures.

Rottnest Express Tour Guide

How much is the Rottnest Express Adventure Tour?

  • $67 Per Person

You can purchase your ferry ticket + this trip for a total of $136.

What do I need to bring on the boat?

When getting on the vessel you are given a long rain poncho to stop you getting wet 🧥. You are likely to get wet on this tour so we advise you not to bring anything expensive which can be damaged.

The tour guide will give you the option to leave any bags in a safe area on the doc while you are on the trip. The boat does travel at high speeds and we got very cold while we were travelling between stops so we recommend a jumper.

If you get seasick then we advise you wear the travel sickness wrist bands or have a supply of ginger biscuits! During our tour we stopped to watch a huge pod of dolphins and the boat did rock enough to make a few people sick.

Rottnest Island Jetty

Things to know before you go

A few key point to check before you head out on the Rottnest Express boat tour. Whilst we do our best to keep times and dates up to date, we recommend checked with the tour operator in case departure times have changed.

  • Operates daily departure is at 11.15 am between mid-September and late April, except Christmas Day.
  • Departure Location is Berth 0, Main Jetty on Rottnest Island
  • Tour duration is for 90 minutes.

Our personal opinion on Rottnest Island Boat Trips

Having lived on the island for a few months, we can safely say we would highly recommend this boat trip on Rottnest Island. It was the perfect balance of adventure, information and encounters with wild animals.

We absolutely loved being so close to the seals and then suddenly being surrounded by a pod of Dolphins. It was an amazing day and a great way to see the island’s coastline.

The guides made us feel safe, even if Milly was terrified during parts. However, they kept us at ease that we were perfectly safe. Dez was hilarious and we highly recommend doing the trip if he is working!

Rotto travel guide: the perfect day trip to Rottnest Island, Western Australia

With pristine white-sand beaches, tranquil swimming bays, vibrant reefs, and pumping surf, it’s no secret why Rottnest Island has become one of Western Australia’s most popular travel destinations. Coupled with the fact that it’s one of only a few places in the world where you can see quokkas , the adorable little marsupials that have gained internet fame for smiling in selfies alongside giddy tourists, and that the island is just 18km off the coast of Perth , “Rotto” is both an immensely popular weekend escape for locals and a major draw for international travellers venturing over to Australia’s rugged west coast.

Rotto is somewhere that absolutely everyone will tell you to visit in WA and, for that reason, I skipped over it on my first trip, figuring it was going to be crowded and a bit of a let down. On my most recent visit, I realised what an enormous mistake that was— if Rottnest Island seems to be over-hyped, it’s only because it is actually that amazing. Use this Rottnest Island travel guide to learn more about catching the ferry, getting around the island, staying overnight, how to take the perfect quokka selfie, and all the best places to visit during your trip!

What's in this travel guide

Getting to Rottnest Island

Getting to perth.

Before making the journey over to Rottnest Island, you’ll first need to get to Perth, the capital of Western Australia . There are plenty of flights zipping across from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, etc, but you’ll have to plan ahead to get a good price on tickets. My Qantas flights from Melbourne were $650AUD in December, even reserved several months in advance, so keep an eye on specials and considering traveling during off-peak (i.e. avoiding school holidays).

Check out this 1-week itinerary for the perfect trip around South West Australia: PERTH TO MARGARET RIVER TRAVEL GUIDE: 1-WEEK WESTERN AUSTRALIA ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

Once in Perth, make sure to take at least a few days to explore the city and surrounds. WA is one of the most spectacular places in all of Australia and home to absolutely staggering natural beauty. Rottnest Island is only a small taste of what the state has to offer!

Getting around Rottnest Island

Island explorer bus.

There are no private vehicles allowed on Rottnest Island, which really leaves you with 2 main options for getting around. For $20, you can purchase a day pass on the Island Explorer bus , hopping on and off at any of the 14 bus stops scattered across Rottnest Island.

These bus stops are mainly concentrated around popular tourist beaches and the main accomodation areas ( see the map below ), which makes it easy to get around, but also does limit your ability to explore away from the crowds — and these can be notable in summer or during school holidays.

Biking around the island

The second option, and my personal recommendation, is to hire a bike and pedal around Rotto, discovering all the hidden gems that make this island so magical. Rottnest Island is only 11km long, so it’s incredibly manageable for any level of biker to explore at least a good portion of the island within a single day.

The roads are also relatively flat, but if you’re worried about some short hills or you just want to take it easy, plenty of companies offer e-bikes for hire . For those hoping to bike all the way to the West End and back in a single day, this is probably a good idea, just to maximise your time at the beach and minimise your time sweating on a bike seat. See my recommended itinerary below for more tips on biking Rottnest Island!

Where to stay on Rottnest Island

There are only a 3 main areas to stay on Rottnest Island, each with a small number of accomodation options available, including camping, cabins, suites, and private units.

Map of Rottnest Island accommodation Perth Western Australia

The Thomson Bay Settlement

This is the main town on Rottnest Island and, in addition to the the ferry wharf, there are several restaurants, cafes, and a Visitor’s Centre in the area. Accomodation spans the length of Thomson Bay up to Pinky Bay and The Basin, and ranges from campgrounds and budget cabins to glamping and upscale hotels.

  • Campground : $39/night for a 6-person campground, just off The Basin
  • Karma Rottnest: variety of mid-value hotel rooms
  • Hotel Rottnest: fully renovated upscale hotel re-opening late 2020
  • Discovery Holiday Park: $274-489/night (min. 3 nights), glamping tents with stellar views
  • Caroline Thomson Cabins: $76-153/night for a 6-bed cabin
  • North Heritage Bungalows: $86-197/night for 4- or 6-bed cabins
  • Heritage View Cottage: $280-571/night for a 6-bed cabin
  • Heritage Cottage: $126-466/night for a 4-, 6-, or 8-bed cabin at the north end of Thomson Bay
  • Standard Holiday Units : $126-330/night for 4- or 6-bed units
  • Chalet: $126-241/night for a 4-bed chalet at the north end of Thomson Bay

Kingstown Barracks

Just a short walk from The Settlement, Kingstown Barracks is a quieter place to stay that still affords easy access to the ferry, bike hire, and cafes of The Settlement. Options here are best for either budget travellers or for large groups.

  • Rottnest Hostel: $55/night for a dorm bed (year-round) or $83-122/night for a family room
  • Governor’s Circle: large 9-, 13-, or 18-bed cabins for groups
  • Kingstown Dormitories: range or 2-bed to 18-bed dorms for groups

Geordie Bay

This small area is the only other food hub on the island, with a cafe and general store walking distance from any accomodation. The Basin, one of the most popular beaches on Rotto, is also in close proximity, and there are a range of mid-budget and luxury options available, many with an ocean view.

  • Island Couple’s Retreat: $214-424/night for a luxury 1-bedroom house, on Longreach Bay
  • Ocean View Units: $214-570/night for 4-, 6-, or 8-bed unit with beach view (also scattered towards Thomson Bay)
  • Premium View Units: $187-498/night for 4-, 6-, or 8-bed unit (also scattered towards Thomson Bay)
  • Premium Units: $143-330/night for 4-, 6-, or 8-bed unit (also scattered towards Thomson Bay)

Where to eat on Rottnest Island

Cafes & restaurants.

The greatest selection of food and drink is available in The Thomson Bay Settlement , which includes a bakery, general store, Subway, and several local cafes, restaurants, and bars.

You can also find food in Geordie Bay, which has a cafe/restaurant and a well-stocked general store, or stop at the Lexi’s coffee cart at the West End… and then that’s the end of your food options on Rottnest Island.

Based on the slim selection of food outside The Settlement, I’d recommend either packing snacks along or working Geordie Bay into your itinerary as a lunch stop while riding around the island. The general store here has inexpensive meat pies and cold drinks, as well as a wide selection of fruit, ice cream, chips, and other snacks.

Drinking water

There are a number of free water re-fill stations on Rottnest Island , mainly concentrated around The Settlement, Kingstown Barracks, The Basin, Vlamingh Lookout, and Geordie Bay.

There is nowhere to fill up water in the middle of the island or over at the West End, so plan accordingly and carry plenty of water with you while you’re biking.

What to pack for Rottnest Island

  • Day pack or beach bag —  be sure to grab a basket for your bike if you’re carrying a bag
  • Beach towel
  • Sunnies & hat
  • Water bottle — re-fill at the free water stations on Rottnest Island and carry plenty of water on a long ride
  • Ferry tickets — on your phone or printed
  • Map of Rottnest Island — grab a free map from the ferry or the Visitor’s Centre on Rottnest Island

Quokkas Rottnest Island Perth Western Australia

Quokkas on Rottnest Island

Everything you need to know about quokkas

Particularly as #QuokkaSelfie has gained popularity online and catapulted Rotto onto the international travel stage, spotting local quokkas is arguably the main tourist draw to Rottnest Island (that is, before you’ve realised how amazing the beaches are). But what even is a quokka?!

What is a quokka?

These fuzzy marsupials, bearing a striking resemblance to baby wallabies, are native only to Rotto and a couple other islands off the coast of southwest WA. By far the largest population lives on Rottnest Island, though, and despite low global numbers, you can expect to see dozens of quokkas hopping about during your trip.

Apart from being unique to WA, the quokka’s main claim to fame is just that it’s insanely cute — widely referred to as “the world’s most cheerful animal”, quokkas wear perpetual grins and will happily approach tourists for a sniff/lick.

When it’s time to relax and recharge, swap the rush of the city for an idyllic escape on Rottnest Island.

Located just 19km (12mi) off the coast of Perth, Rottnest Island’s tranquil setting will make you feel a world away. Rotto, as the locals call it, is a protected nature reserve boasting an abundance of unique flora and fauna, including spectacular marine life and the island’s most famous resident – the adorable quokka. Discover rich cultural heritage, explore white-sand beaches and swim and snorkel in pristine waters, all in this little pocket of paradise.

In the local Whadjuk Noongar language, Rottnest Island/Wadjemup translates to ‘place across the water where the spirits are’. To the Whadjuk Noongar people, Wadjemup is a spiritual paradise where spirits journey before the afterlife. Learn more about the island’s cultural significance during an Aboriginal walking tour with a Whadjuk guide.

Rottnest Island Day Trip: Perfect One Day Itinerary

Just a short ferry ride from Perth the island paradise of Rottnest Island awaits. Also known as “Rotto” by locals like myself, this destination offers a laid-back escape that feels worlds apart from the busy mainland.

With its pristine beaches, abundant wildlife and relaxed island vibes, Rottnest is the perfect getaway from Perth, be it for a day or longer. Whether you’re seeking a day filled with beach hopping, exploring the island by bicycle or snapping a selfie with the insta-famous quokkas, a day trip to Rottnest will delight.

Read on for my guide packed with insider tips and suggested Rottnest Island day trip itinerary, ensuring you make the most of your day trip to Rottnest Island from Perth. This is your ultimate Rottnest Island guide.

This blog post was published in December 2020 and last updated in September 2023.

About Rottnest Island

Lying just off the coast of Perth, Western Australia, Rottnest Island got its name from Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh in 1696. He mistook the island’s unique quokkas for large rats and hence named it “Rattennest” (Rat’s Nest).

Aboriginal Australians are thought to have inhabited the island over 30,000 years ago with the Whadjuk Noongar people, the land’s traditional custodians, referring to it as Wadjemup .

The island has a grim past; during British settlement in the 19th century, the island was used as a prison for Indigenous people. Many of the buildings in existence on the island today were constructed by these prisoners.

From a penal settlement turned popular holiday spot in the early 20th century, the island sure has changed a lot since then.

Today, its stunning beaches, unique wildlife and historical sites attract thousands of visitors to the island each year.

Best Time to Visit Rottnest Island

Due to many of the best things to do on Rottnest involving exploring the spectacular beaches, many will tell you that the best time to visit Rottnest Island is during the warmer months from November to March.

Personally, I think you can visit all year round .

Perth has mild winters, making a trip to Rottnest Island in winter a great activity to do on a sunny winter’s day.

Plus, during winter the island sees substantially fewer visitors and the chance to spot baby quokkas! For more reasons on why it’s worth visiting in winter, check out my guide here .

How Much Time to Spend on Rottnest

For Rottnest Island, one day is sufficient to let you explore the primary attractions and see the highlights of the island. However, if your schedule permits a longer stay and you can snag available accommodation, it’s worthwhile spending a few nights.

This offers a more laid-back experience, letting you really soak in the tranquil beauty of the island after the day visitors have left.

Securing a place to stay can be challenging; accommodation on the island gets quickly snapped up when it’s released months ahead by locals. If you find yourself short on time or unable to secure lodging, a Rottnest Island day trip is worth doing and won’t disappoint.

Certain times of the year see a surge in visitors to the island due to special events.

Notably, the annual Rottnest Island swim, typically held in the last few weeks of February, draws a large crowd. Additionally, the summer school holidays in December and January, especially weekends, are busier than usual.

Try to plan a visit for mid-week if possible during this period.

However, with some forethought, these peak times can still be manageable. Just make sure to reserve your ferry tickets and bicycle hire a few weeks ahead of time, and your visit should proceed smoothly.

Rottnest Island Accommodation

Accommodation on the island is limited, particularly during the school holiday periods .

I’ve found that the best chance of securing accommodation during busier periods or for last-minute stays is with Discovery Rottnest Island (glamping tents).

Here’s a rundown of the accommodation on Rottnest:

  • Discovery Rottnest Island : A modern eco-friendly retreat with luxury glamping tents nestled amongst the sand dunes near Pinky Beach.
  • Samphire Rottnest: Upscale hotel accommodation with a pool
  • Stay Rottnest Self-Contained units : Self-catering facilities scattered across the island, ranging from 4 to 6-bed options perfect for families and groups.
  • Stay Rottnest Hostel & Dorms: A budget-friendly option with private rooms and dorm-style accommodation with common areas.
  • Stay Rottnest Campground: Non-powered campsites with a communal camp kitchen and ablution blocks.

Karma Rottnest is now closed due to redevelopment

Getting to Rottnest Island from Perth

The majority of visitors catch a ferry from Perth to Rottnest Island.

Ferries set sail from various locations including Perth CBD (Barrack St Jetty), Fremantle and Hillarys Boat Harbour. Various companies operate from each of these locations, but they all offer a similar service regardless of departure location.

Fremantle is my preferred departure port . Not only is it conveniently located a short walk from the Fremantle Train Station, but it also has the shortest ferry ride to the island at a swift 30-minute journey.

Furthermore, if you are hiring a car to get around Perth during your visit, the Fremantle ferry has ample affordable paid parking options for the day.

However, if you are staying in the Perth CBD, then catching the ferry from Barrack St Jetty is a great option as it involves a scenic cruise along the Swan River.

For a Rottnest day trip, I recommend booking an early morning ferry departure to maximise your time on the island.

Tip: A quick tip for day trippers without checked-in bags: make sure to be at the ferry terminal at least 15 minutes beforehand as the ferry departs punctually.

With most online bookings, you should be able to show your ticket on your phone and head straight to the ferry when you arrive at the port (double check your booking confirmation!).

Both SeaLink (blue ferries) and Rottnest Express (red ferries) operate out of Perth and Fremantle.

Rottnest Fast Ferries (green ferries) only operate from Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Rottnest Bike Hire

Getting Around Rottnest Island

One of the unique aspects of Rottnest is that there are no cars on the island (other than service vehicles). Riding a bicycle is the most common way to explore Rottnest Island, or there is a hop-on hop-off bus.

Getting Around Rottnest by Bicycle

Exploring Rottnest Island by bike is a great way to see the island at your own pace.

Word of warning though – the island is hilly! A moderate level of fitness is required if you want to spend your day riding from one end of the island to another.

Hiring a Bicycle on the Island

For bicycle hire, you can either book a ferry ticket with bicycle hire or hire one on the island. I have found the quality of the bikes to be better at the shop on the island, the ones provided by some of the ferry companies can be of mixed quality as they are brought over on the ferry.

The bicycle store on the island is called Pedal & Flipper , a 10-minute walk from the ferry. They are open from 8.30am to 4pm daily, so make sure to return your bike before they close.

You can also hire electric bikes (e-bikes) from Pedal & Flipper. The upside of this is it makes those tough hills a lot easier, but the bike hire fee is over double that of a normal bicycle.

As of September 2023, adult bicycle hire is $30/ day and e-bike hire is $71/day. The hire fee includes a helmet and lock. It is mandatory by law to wear helmets when riding bicycles in Australia.

Pink Lake Rottnest

Snorkel equipment can also be hired for an additional fee.

Ferry & Bicycle Hire Package

For convenience, you can book a ferry ticket and bicycle hire in one ticket.

For these packages, the bikes are provided directly by the ferry company and will be waiting for you when you get off the ferry.

This is the most convenient option as you can start riding as soon as you get off the ferry, but sometimes the bicycles aren’t the best quality.

These options are summarised below.

Getting Around Rottnest by Bus

The next option to get around on your day trip to Rottnest Island is by bus.

For a fuss-free (and hill-free!) option, there is an Island Explorer hop-on hop-off bus service. These shuttle services around the island allow you to explore the island at your own pace, jumping on and off at 19 different stops around the island.

As of September 2023, the bus operates all week long between 8.30am and 3pm (at 15-minute intervals) and then from 3pm – 5pm (at 30-minute intervals). Tickets are $25/adult and can be pre-purchased online, in-person at the Visitor Centre or at the main bus stop near the ferry terminal.

During peak periods, you may have to stand on the bus or if the bus is completely full, wait for the next bus.

This shuttle bus service is not a guided tour and there is no commentary.

Read on for tour options below.

Rottnest Island Tours

The easiest way to get around Rottnest is on a guided bus tour . Offered as a package with round-trip ferry tickets, enjoy a 1-hour 45-minute tour in an air-conditioned bus with live commentary as you discover the island’s flora, fauna and must-see spots.

The bus tour covers all of the island’s highlights, including the Wadjemup Lighthouse, Henrietta Rocks, Cathedral Rocks lookout and Cape Vlamingh.

This tour allows you to get familiar with the layout of the island and see the furthest away spots, before having a few hours of free time after the tour to explore the main settlement at Thomson’s Bay, have lunch and a swim before hopping back on the ferry home.

  • Check prices and availability (departures from Perth or Fremantle)

A more extensive guided tour of Rottnest Island is available.

This Rottnest grand island tour is a 4-hour island tour that includes the guided bus tour, plus a tour of the Oliver Hill Gun Fortification and Tunnels and a light lunch.

What to Bring On A Rottnest Day Trip

Here’s a short packing list to help you plan your Rottnest trip.

  • Snorkel (also available for hire from Pedal & Flipper)
  • Camera
  • Bathers (or wear them over underneath your clothes)
  • Sneakers and Flip-Flops
  • Water Bottle
  • Sun Protection including Sunglasses and Hat
  • Seasickness Medication if required
  • Light Snacks (or buy on the island)

Stay hydrated: there are water bottle refill stations at Geordie Bay, the Settlement, The Basin and the Visitor Centre.

You’ll need to leave your drone at home if you have one. Drone use is not permitted on the island unless you have obtained a special permit from the Rottnest Island Authority due to the abundant wildlife and central airport located on the island.

What to Do in Rottnest Island In One Day

Go beach hopping at some of rottnest’s best beaches.

With 63 beaches and 20 bays, there is no shortage of spectacular beaches to be found on Rottnest.

Some of my favourite spots that I recommend visiting by bicycle around the island are (listed from a counterclockwise direction around the island):

  • Parker Point: a snorkelling spot with a long flight of wooden stairs leading down to the beach
  • Little Salmon Bay: beautiful crystal clear water, excellent snorkelling and a sheltered bay.
  • Little Parakeet Bay: sheltered little bay with the larger Parakeet Bay next door
  • The Basin: one of the more popular snorkelling spots, within walking distance from the main settlement.
  • Pinky’s Beach: Located in front of Discovery Rottnest Island and Pinky’s Beach Club, this beach is looked over by the Bathurst Lighthouse

Little Salmon Bay

Cycle or Walk Through the Salt Lakes

The centre of Rottnest Island is made up of 10 salt lakes over a whopping 200 hectares.

They have created a unique wetland ecosystem, with waterbirds and interesting plant life that has adapted to the saltiness such as the samphire plant (from which the Hotel Samphire gets its name). At certain times of the year, the salt lakes may turn hues of pink.

You can cycle your way through the salt lakes, or traverse on foot. There is a boardwalk installed that allows you to walk through the lakes, as part of the Wadjemup Bidi trail .

Clear water and blue skies at the salt lakes

Visit the Lighthouses

Rottnest is home to two lighthouses; the Wadjemup Lighthouse in the centre of the island, and Bathurst Lighthouse near Pinky’s Beach.

Wadjemup Lighthouse was built in 1896 on the highest point of the island to safeguard against shipwrecks. Today, it takes the title of Australia’s fourth tallest lighthouse of its kind. It’s still in use today, helping to guide ships towards the port of Fremantle.

Volunteers offer guided tours to the top of Wadjemup Lighthouse. Unfortunately, these can’t be booked online in advance, but it’s worth enquiring at the Volunteer Information Booth in town or checking in at the Lighthouse during your visit.

The smaller Bathurst Lighthouse is also operational, however isn’t open to visitors for guided tours within the lighthouse. You can visit the exterior, and it’s a great spot to watch the sunset on Rottnest.

Rottnest Lighthouse

Snap a Quokka Selfie

Thanks to the viral “ Quokka Selfie ” trend on social media, Rottnest Island’s charming quokkas have become international celebrities. These adorable marsupials, found exclusively on Rottnest Island, have been delighting visitors and the online world with their adorable smiles.

While quokkas are dispersed throughout the island, they’re notably active during the early morning and late afternoon. A popular hotspot to spot them is around the General Store and Bakery in Thompsons Bay.

However, a word of caution: many quokkas here tend to feed on leftover food scraps, which isn’t ideal for these herbivorous critters.

Always remember to respect the wildlife. While it’s tempting to interact closely, avoid touching or feeding the quokkas. But don’t hold back on capturing that perfect selfie – just do so responsibly!

On the spot fines of $200 apply for feeding and interfering with the quokkas.

See Rottnest from Above on a Scenic Flight

One of the best ways to truly take in the vivid colours of Rottnest’s many bays and beaches, and sparkling salt lakes, is from above on a scenic flight. Rottnest Air Taxi offers short scenic joy flights over the island.

For the more adventurous, tick off a bucket list item with a tandem skydive over Rottnest. This exhilarating experience will give you a unique perspective of Rottnest, and leave you with memories you won’t forget anytime soon!

Check prices and availability here

Spot Seals at Cathedral Rocks

At the West End of Rottnest, the furthest point from the main settlement lies a lookout platform at Cathedral Rocks. From here, there’s a good chance of spotting seals sunbathing on the rocks below.

It is a long bike ride to get here, so make sure you have enough time if visiting for a day trip or catching the Island Explorer Bus.

Learn about Rottnest’s History at Wadjemup Museum

Recently renovated, the Wadjemup Museum is the spot to learn more about the history of the island. Entry is a gold coin donation to this small museum, which is open daily from 10 am to 3.30 pm.

Rottnest Island Day Trip Itinerary

Start your day on Rottnest by grabbing a map from the Visitors Centre as you disembark from the ferry. You can also purchase hop-on hop-off bus tickets here.

Generally, it’s best to explore the island in a counter-clockwise loop, due to the direction of the wind. It also allows you to tackle the hillier sections of the island when you are fresh if cycling around the island.

At the main settlement of Thomson Bay (where you get off the ferry), there is a small supermarket and the yummy Rottnest Bakery.

This is Stop 1 on my map below. Pick up any snacks to tide you over, or something for lunch later.

Rottnest Map

Heading in a counter-clockwise direction, stop off at some of the best beaches in Rottnest. I recommend Parker Point (stop 2) and Little Salmon Bay (stop 3) .

Continue on by bike or bus, to the Wadjemup Lighthouse (stop 4) in the centre of the island. There is a steep hill to reach the lighthouse, in the shade of the trees along here keep an eye out for quokkas that frequent this area.

At Wadjemup Lighthouse, there is a vintage caravan serving coffee and light snacks. If you’ve cycled here, you’ll likely be in need of refreshment after that hill! Sit back and enjoy the view of the lighthouse and 360 panoramic view of the island from your high vantage point. Kalli’s is open seasonally in the warmer months.

Lexis Rottnest Island

At this point, you have a choice of continuing on to the West End of Rottnest (stop 5b), or taking a shorter route along the north side of the island, passing through some of Rottnest’s salt lakes on the way (stop 5a) .

Parakeet Bay or Little Parakeet Bay (stop 6) are some more beautiful beaches worth checking out as you continue your explorations.

At this point, a lunch stop is probably required! There is a General Store and café at Geordie Bay just after Parakeet Bay. Or, continue on to Pinky’s Beach where you’ll find Pinky’s Beach Club serving food and cocktails all day long.

Make sure to check out the Basin , just next to Pinky’s Beach too.

By now, you’re probably getting close to your ferry departure back to the mainland.

Use any spare time to explore the Settlement, checking out the Wadjemup Museum and quokka spotting. Wrap up your day of exploring with a cold drink at Hotel Rottnest, a casual beachfront pub.

This spot is a short 5-minute walk from the ferry, making it an ideal location to toast the end of a memorable day on Rottnest Island.

Best Places to Eat and Drink on Rottnest Island

In recent years, the food and drink offerings have really expanded on the island, offering a range of cheap eats to fine dining options.

Check opening hours before you visit, as they may change seasonally.

Thomson’s Bay (the Settlement)

The main settlement has the largest range of places to eat and drink. Here are some popular options;

  • Hotel Rottnest: Classic pub fare, in a casual spot overlooking the beach
  • Lontara: Delicious fine-dining South East Asian cuisine
  • Subway: One of the most popular cheap eats on the island
  • Isola Rottnest: One of the top-rated restaurants on the island, serving Italian cuisine overlooking Thomson’s Bay
  • Rottnest Bakery: Serving a wide range of pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches and sweet pastries and coffee
  • Frankie’s on Rotto: Serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner plus yummy pizzas
  • Lane Cafe: Claims the spot for the best burgers on Rottnest!

Cocktails by the beach at Samphire Rottnest

Geordie’s Bay

  • Geordie’s Cafe and Art Gallery: An art gallery cafe with a large shaded outside seating area
  • Lexi’s: another vintage caravan, providing much-needed refreshment to those that make it out the West End

OMG Quokkas are adorable!! Absolutely adding Rottnest Island to my bucket list!

Wow what a place! I’ve never heard of it but I felt like I took a virtual tour and that was nice! How did you learn about this place!?

Rottnest island looks beautiful, the water reminds me of what ours looks like here in The Bahamas. Thank you for sharing the not so nice history as well, that’s important. The quokkas are so cute, I would love to take some pics with those little guys!

This is so cute! And I love that there are Quokkas too!! The beach is beautiful too…I can’t imagine it being a prison…thanks for sharing a bit of the backstory as well! I’ll opt for renting a bike from the boat haha

This looks like a gorgeous destination (those beaches!), and those quokkas are so cute! Gotta plan a western Australia trip as soon as the world reopens! Thanks for the tips about the AM express ferry and no drones allowed!

Quokka on Rottnest Island

Your ultimate travel guide to Rottnest Island

From stunning beaches to the world's friendliest, cutest animal, Rottnest Island makes for a fantastic trip

Just a zippy 30-minute ferry ride from Fremantle (or 90 minutes from the Perth CBD), Rottnest Island is one of Western Australia's greatest gems. Also known by its local Aboriginal name, Wadjemup, and ‘Rotto’ by locals, it’s an essential addition to any WA itinerary.

Out of towners may know Rottnest for its friendly population of quokkas, but the island is also home to the most incredible azure blue waters you’ll come across, and nowadays, it has a selection of top-notch eateries and luxe accommodation, as well as camping grounds, cafés and low-key restaurants for the budget-conscious.

Whether you’re ready to splurge on a peaceful retreat or simply spend your days lounging at the beach and sipping on pints at the hotel, you can easily spend a day, weekend or entire week on Rottnest Island.

Travel to and around the island

Getting there

Getting there

There are three ferries that travel between Perth and Rottnest Island. The Rottnest Express leaves from Fremantle and the city (the latter includes a scenic route along the Swan River with commentary), SeaLink also departs from Fremantle and the city, and Rottnest Fast Ferries leaves from Hillarys Boat Harbour, for those staying north of the river. Each company offers tour and package options, plus bike and snorkel hire, although bikes can also be hired on the island.

Getting around

Getting around

The 11km long and 4.5km wide island is car-free, which means most island-goers get around on a bike. You can bring your own bike on the ferry (just make sure you opt for this when booking your ferry tickets), or you can hire one from Pedal and Flipper . The bike rental shop is a short walk from the island’s ferry terminal, is open daily and has plenty of bikes and helmets for hire, including kids' bikes and electric bikes, plus snorkels, wetsuits and stand-up paddleboards. You can book your bike in advance.

If cycling isn’t your thing or you’re after a more relaxed way to see the island, buy a day pass for the hop-on, hop-off bus called the Island Explorer. You can grab a day pass from the visitor centre on arrival or buy one online . The bus visits 19 beautiful beaches, and riders can journey around the island in air conditioned comfort.

Things to do

Go beach hopping

Go beach hopping

The main attraction on Rottnest is the selection of breathtaking, world-class beaches, with their sugar-white sand and turquoise water. The island has more than 60 beaches and 20 bays, so you could easily spend a few days exploring the coastline. If you’re on the island for one day and don’t mind a day of cycling, head south of the Thomson Bay Settlement to Little Salmon Bay, stopping at Henrietta Rocks and Parker Point along the way. If you’re willing to cycle further (or you’re on the bus), curve around west from here to Mary Cove, a popular snorkel spot, and continue to the most westerly point of the island to discover Fish Hook Bay. From here you could continue north to completely cycle around the island.

Another day trip option is to cycle north of the Settlement to Pinky Beach, before continuing on to the Basin, Longreach Bay, Fays Bay, Geordie Bay and Little Armstrong Bay. Remember to pack a snorkel and plenty of water – there are not many places to refill your water bottle outside of the Settlement.

See the famous quokkas

See the famous quokkas

You’ll see these cute marsupials throughout the island. There's a reason they are dubbed the happiest animals in the world, and their smiling faces and friendly nature attract plenty of eager visitors to the island. Many quokkas hang out in the island’s small township, the Thomson Bay Settlement, located just a two-minute walk from the ferry terminal. If you sit alfresco at a café, restaurant or the hotel, you’re sure to spot a wandering quokka. Just remember, you’re not allowed to touch or feed them, but they’re more than happy to have their photos taken!

Go on a cruise

Go on a cruise

Rottnest Cruises runs a Luxe Island Seafood Cruise between October and March, a four-hour voyage with a seven-course progressive lunch, including western rock lobster freshly caught on the day. Drinks are included, and you can sip on premium Margaret River wines while basking on the decks of the 21-metre pleasure boat. As the name suggests, it’s a seriously luxe and memorable experience.

Another way to see the island is on an Adventure Boat Tour , spotting wildlife, hidden beaches and whales (between September and November). If you’re more of an adrenaline junkie, book to go on the Thrill Boat Ride and feel the air whip through your hair as you speed around the island.

Learn about the island's cultural history

Learn about the island's cultural history

Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) has been a significant place for the Whadjuk Noongar people since before the last ice age. However, the island has a notorious past, serving as a prison for Aboriginal people between 1838 and 1904 and a forced labour camp until 1931. You can learn more about the island’s history with Go Cultural Aboriginal Tours & Experiences , which offers fascinating one- or two-hour tours.

Eat and drink

Fresh off the boat

Fresh off the boat

For coffee and a bite to eat as you step off the ferry, walk to the island’s main hub (known as the Thomson Bay Settlement) and head to the Lane . The crew are super lovely and can make a mean cup of coffee. There also offer wraps, smoothies, acai bowls, salads and sweet treats to get you fuelled for the day ahead. Just remember to BYO reusable coffee cup, as they offer takeaway only. Next door to the Lane is Frankie’s on Rotto , a casual eatery serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant is known for its sourdough pizza, so you know where to go if you have a hankering for carbs later in the day (after cycling around the island all day, you probably will!). Frankie’s also run a pop-up bar and eatery called the Top Bar , a low-key space adorned with fairy lights and a caravan that dishes out share-style meals, drinks and cocktails. The Top Bar is open only open in the warmer months, and you’ll be able to spot it just off the ferry terminal.

Isola Bar e Cibo

Isola Bar e Cibo

Opening in September 2021,  Isola Bar e Cibo is in a prime location on Thompson Bay, a stone’s throw from the ferry terminal. On the menu you’ll find antipasti (for example, bruschetta, crudo, burrata caprese), sliced cheeses and meats (paired wonderfully with an Aperol Spritz) and main dishes of pasta, seafood and melt-in-your-mouth meat. For drinks, there are plenty of wines, beers and cocktails, with Apertivo Afternoons held from 3-5.30pm from Wednesdays to Sundays.

Lontara

To get your spice fix, book into Lontara at Samphire resort, also located on the water’s edge of Thomson Bay. The menu at this Southeast Asian fusion restaurant has flavours hailing from Indonesia, Malaysia, China and Vietnam and more, sprinkled with local seafood including Shark Bay scallops served on betel leaf with finger lime and chilli, and Abrolhos Island octopus with spicy sambal.

Pub meals

For relaxed but high-quality pub meals, Hotel Rottnest and Pinky’s Beach Club are the island’s top spots. The hotel  has favourites such as fish and chips, pizza, steaks and burgers, as well as prawn tacos, Rottnest crayfish and smaller bites like dips and olives to accompany your drinks. It’s a bustling spot, with regular DJs and live music, plenty of outdoor seating and sweeping views of Thompson Bay. Pinky’s isn’t in the main settlement, but rather on the shores of Pinky Beach, home of the photogenic Bathurst Lighthouse and about a 10-minute walk from the ferry. It lies within Discovery, an eco-resort, but everyone is welcome to dine there. Pinky’s menu ranges from lobster tacos and spicy squid to cheeseburgers and steak sandwiches.

Where to stay

Samphire Rottnest

Samphire Rottnest

Samphire Rottnest is a resort right on the shores of Thomson Bay. A fairly new accommodation option on the island, it’s home to two swimming pools, a few cocktail bars and spacious rooms. It is full of luxe boho touches, with neutral décor, well-appointed large beds, balconies or terraces and in some rooms, freestanding baths. You can even organise in-room massages and facials for the ultimate resort experience.

Discovery Rottnest Island

Discovery Rottnest Island

Want something a bit closer to nature?  Discovery Rottnest Island is home to 83 glamping eco tents, all furnished and located in a prime spot by Pinky Beach. The tents range from the deluxe oceanside tents, fitted out with a king-size bed, walk-in robe, kitchenette, ensuite bathroom and unparalleled ocean views, to the standard tent, which is still glamping at its finest, with a queen bed, ensuite bathroom and ceiling fan. The tents are connected by a web of paths, all leading to the beach and Pinky’s Beach Club, where you can head for brekkie, lunch, aperitivo hour and dinner.

Cottages at Geordie Bay

Cottages at Geordie Bay

The Rottnest Island Authority operates its own accommodation, and it’s hard to go past these beachside cottages at Geordie Bay . They are reminiscent of the Mediterranean, overlooking a panoramic, postcard-perfect bay, which is blue, calm and dotted with boats. The houses at Geordie’s Bay are painted a quaint yellow, are self-contained and equipped with all the necessities for a peaceful stay. There is also similar beachside accommodation at Thomson Bay, Bathurst, Longreach Bay and Fay's Bay run by the same group, plus campgrounds if you’d rather set up a tent or a swag for the night. When you book the campsite, your luggage even gets delivered straight to your site, which is handy when you’re on a bike!

Affectionately known as Rotto, or Wadjemup to the local Noogar people, the island sits just off the coast of Fremantle, a short 30-minute ferry ride from the mainland. Best known for its famous quokka population, people come from all over the world to try and snap the perfect selfie with the cute smiling little quokkas that roam all over the island. They’re definitely not shy, and you’re likely to spot them all over the place, from the main street to the beach club, and maybe even having a midday nap in the shade near your luxury glamping tent.

In this post:

Getting to Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island lies just 18 kilometres off the coast of Fremantle along the West Coast of Australia.

The easiest way to get to Rottnest Island is to catch a ferry service from Fremantle to Rottnest Island with SeaLink Rottnest Island . The trip takes about 30 minutes from B Shed at Victoria Quay and there are multiple services throughout the day. You can also jump on the ferry right from Barrack Street Jetty in the heart of Perth CBD. The ferry ride from here takes about 90 minutes (with a stop off at Fremantle), but you get to experience a lovely river cruise down the Swan River on the way. Such a peaceful way to start your adventure.

Ferry tickets also include the government admission fee, which is $20 per adult for day trip guests and $26 per adult for overnight guests, with discounts for kids and families. This admission fee contributes to the conservation of the island and the upkeep of facilities and is charged to everyone visiting the island.

Take advantage of SeaLink’s luggage concierge, and let them know where you’re staying when you check into the ferry. They will deliver your luggage straight to your accommodation, so you don’t have to worry about lugging it around the island and holding onto it until you can check in to your room. You can start enjoying island life as soon as you set foot on Rotto. How perfect is that!

Book your ferry to to Rottnest Island here: sealinkrottnest.com.au

Swan River Seaplanes

Alternatively, to arrive in a little more style, book a seaplane transfer to Rottnest Island with  Swan River Seaplanes . A short 20 minute flight connects Rottnest Island and Perth CBD, and a scenic seaplane flight offeres you stunning views of both the city and the island, before an exciting water landing.

Land on Thomson Bay on Rottnest Island (weather permitting) or take off and land from Queen Street Jetty in South Perth. And can we just say, wow, a water landing is so much smoother and more peaceful than a regular landing! You can book either a one way or return trip, with multiple departures each way throughout the day to choose from.

This was our first time flying and landing on water in a seaplane and we absolutely loved it, highly recommend for your visit to Rottnest Island. Swan River Seaplanes also offer Perth scenic flights, Margaret River day tours and even tours out to the Abrolhos Islands! If you have some extra time around Perth, definitely check out their other tour options as well.

Where to stay on Rottnest Island

Without a doubt, Discovery Rottnest Island is the place to base yourself during your visit. Sitting just behind the sand dunes of the iconic Pinky Beach, Discovery Rottnest Island has glamping-style accommodation, with luxury tents set up to give you the ultimate island experience. The beds are big and comfy, the tents are kitted out with their own bathrooms and small kitchens, there’s a deck to relax on out the front, and the beach is only a few steps away. It’s also home to Pinky’s Beach Club, serving our favourite cocktails on the island, as well as complimentary breakfast during your stay.

Across our two visits to Rottnest Island we’ve now stayed in a deluxe dune tent, superior tent, and the deluxe family tent. They are all wonderful options. If you’re ready to splurge, you can’t go past the deluxe tents, with ocean front or dune views, you can walk straight to the beach from your deck and it is the ultimate in glamping luxury. Honestly, it doesn’t even feel like you’re staying in a tent at all, these tents are the absolute height of luxury.

If you’re travelling with a group of family or friends, the deluxe family tents were fantastic as well. They include a shared deck, outdoor shower and BBQ space – great option for a group staying together. We loved the deck on our stay as it was plenty of space for Macey to play.

Book your stay at here at Discovery Rottnest Island .

During your stay at Discovery Rottnest Island, make sure you check out Pinky’s Rottnest Island. Offering a buffet breakfast to kick start your day, followed by a menu of local produce, tasting plates and seafood inspired mains throughout the day, there’s always something great to taste at Pinky’s.

At the end of the day, settle into their sunset deck with a signature cocktail and enjoy the best sunset views on the island. Or grab an outdoor table and enjoy dinner under the colourful sky.

Things to do on Rottnest Island

Whether you’re up for a day of adventure, or you’re just looking to eat your way around the island and relax on the beaches, there is something for everyone on Rottnest Island.

Start your day with a lap of the island, either by bicycle or by bus. Rent an electric bicycle from Pedal & Flipper to quickly zip around the island, stopping whenever you like for photos or a quick dip, or jump on the Island Explorer for their hop-on, hop-off bus service around the island. The Discovery Bus Tour also loops around the island, with a guided 90-minute tour of the island’s cultural and historical heritage sites.

Beach hop across the island, stopping for a dip at as many of the beaches as you can. Head to The Basin early in the morning to get this stunning natural swimming pool all to yourself, definitely one of our  favourite spots on the island, especially if you can beat the crowds. Some more great spots around Rotto include Fish Hook Bay , Pinky’s Beach , Geordie Bay , Little Salmon Bay and Little Parakeet Bay .

Jump on a daytrip with Boutique Cruises to experience the best of Rotto from the water, where you can snorkel around , check out lots of the different bays and beaches around the island and stop at a rocky little island to check out a local colony of Australian sea-lions.

Stop to take the perfect quokka selfie , the most photogenic and smiley animal on the planet. Native to Rottnest Island, this is one of the only places in the world where you can meet a wild quokka, as they roam the streets of the island. Super cute and always looking like they’re smiling at you, quokkas have no fear of humans and if you sit still will often come right up to you. I loved to see them taking a nap in the shade right in the middle of the garden beds in main shopping area. Keep a respectful distance when taking photos, and remember that there is a fine if you’re caught touching or feeding them.

Take a free guided walking tour with Rottnest Voluntary Guides , who have so much knowledge and insights to share about the history of the island. Free tours depart from outside the Salt Store each day, with a whole schedule of different tours on offer.

Grab a cocktail and settle in for the sunset at Pinky’s Rottnest Island . Although the sun doesn’t descend over the ocean from this spot, the sky still lights up in a beautiful swirl of pink, orange and yellow as the sun sets behind you that can’t be beaten. They have a delicious cocktail menu to choose from, but you can’t go past the Summer Sunset Iced Tea.

Eat your way around the island, with endless great food spots to try. Head to  The Mezz on Rotto  for sunset drinks and snacks, Rottnest Island Hotel for great pub-classics and live music and entertainment during the summer months,  Frankie’s on Rotto for takeaway and dine in pizzas, pastas and fresh salads, the iconic Rottnest Island Bakery  for homemade pies, sausage rolls, sandwhiches and sweet treats, or Isola Bar e Cibo for an Italian feast. And don’t forget about Kuld Creamery  at the Basin for an afternoon ice-cream.

Hire some snorkels from Pedal & Flipper and snorkel the underwater self-guided snorkelling trails at Little Salmon Bay and Parker Point to explore some of the beautiful marine life that surrounds Rottnest Island.

Getting around Rottnest Island

The main way to get around Rottnest Island is by bike, which you can rent from Pedal & Flipper on Bedford Avenue. The island is quite hilly and can also get a bit windy, so choosing an electric bike during your visit is the best way to go. It makes riding around the island quick and easy, with a little extra oomph to get you up those hilly roads.

Pedal & Flipper are open from 8.30am until 5pm daily, with discounts for multi-day hires. Plus, they also rent out snorkelling equipment, paddleboards, wetsuits, diving tanks, beach equipment and more.

You can also jump on the Island Explorer Hop On Hop Off Bus to get around the island, which runs from 8.30am each day and has 19 different stops around the island for you to get off and explore. A day pass will give you the freedom to hop on and off as many times as you’d like, which costs $20 for an adult ticket.

When to visit Rottnest Island

For the best weather and to take advantage of the many beaches around the island, head to Rottnest Island between October and April, when the weather is warmer and the days are long and sunny. If you can, avoid travelling during the Western Australian school holidays, when families from Perth flock to the island and it’s generally a lot busier. There is less rainfall on Rottnest Island than on the mainland, so there’s really not a bad time to visit the little island, it just depends how warm you want to be.

Rottnest Island is a great spot for humpback whale spotting between August and November as they migrate south with their newborn calves. They spend lots of time hanging around the waters of Rottnest Island, so it’s a great place to jump on a whale-watching cruise. Check out Rottnest Fast Ferries for their seasonal two-hour whale-watching cruises, for your best chance of getting close to the action.

Important information

Droning for recreational use is not permitted anywhere on Rottnest Island. If you are desperate to drone during your visit you will need to apply for a commercial photography or filming permit for approval, submit a risk management plan, and if all that is approved, meet with the RIA Aerodrone Manager before you are able to get going.  You can find all the information here . Permits can take up to a month to be approved, so make sure you submit them well in advance.

A memorable rottnest island day trip itinerary for nature lovers [map incl.].

  • Post published: 25 September 2017
  • Post category: Australia / Oceania/South Pacific / Western Australia

Located a few miles away from Perth, it is a well-preserved jewel with a stunning coastline . A paradise at the doorstep of a city. We kept Rottnest Island for the end of our trip to Western Australia . We hesitated to go there as it’s an expensive day trip from Perth  or Fremantle (we paid $130 each) compared to the $12 beautiful national parks we visited during the previous two weeks. Learn more about our Rottnest Island day trip itinerary in this article, including a map to help you plan your visit.

Rottnest Island Quokka

Is a Rottnest Island day trip worth it?

Locals all recommended not going to Rottnest Island for a day trip but staying overnight instead . During school holidays, it was mission impossible to find accommodation. Everything had been fully booked for a while. So we could only organise a day trip to Rottnest Island. We loved our day trip, but I wished we could have stayed for one night.

Some will organise a Rottnest Island day trip just to see the cute quokkas.

Rottnest Island is one of the very rare places where it’s possible to see quokkas in the wild. It’s always something to spot iconic Australian wildlife . With their friendly attitude and cute smiling face, they’ve become famous buddies for selfies. So if you want to tick this off your Australia bucket list , my Rottnest Island day trip itinerary will meet your expectations.

I didn’t travel to Rottnest Island for the quokkas, but I admit that meeting the cute animals was awesome. I included tips on where to see the quokkas later in this article. But bear in mind that  Rottnest Island is a lot more than just a quokka sanctuary.

Rottnest Island wasn’t ten times better than the $12 national parks, but  we had a fantastic day trip . If you are in Perth for a short time, it’s worth paying a visit.  Although it’s more crowded than bigger national parks, there were fewer people than I expected considering its proximity to Perth City. That could be the only advantage of the pricey ferry tickets.

But if you’re on a tight budget and have time to explore the coast further down, don’t be too sad to skip it .

Our Rottnest Island day trip itinerary from Perth / Fremantle

Ferry from perth or fremantle to rottnest island.

If you have a car, I recommend catching the ferry to Rottnest Island from Fremantle as it’s a cheaper option.

There are two ferries that will take you to Rottnest Island:

  • A fast ferry * that leaves from Perth’s Barrack Street Jetty and stops at Fremantle. From Fremantle, it’s a 25-minute trip to Rottnest Island.
  • A big ferry * that leaves from Fremantle and takes about 35 minutes to reach Rottnest Island. That’s the one we took as it had the best timetables to maximise our time for our Rottnest Island day trip (early arrival, late departure).

We left Perth early in the morning to catch the earliest ferry to Rottnest Island from Fremantle. We came back with the latest one. Hence, we had almost 12 hours to visit Rottnest Island . And we used them to the fullest.

We hired a bike and a snorkelling kit with the ferry company. We got them straight away on the jetty after exiting the boat: it couldn’t have been quicker or easier!

Tip: I know it’s tempting to race to the beach but don’t forget to check the size of your mask and fins at the wharf when you still have the opportunity to swap!

Here’s the map we used for our Rottnest Island day trip itinerary to find the best circuit and snorkelling spots (click on the image to see it bigger):

Rottnest Island day trip itinerary: Cycling around the island

We explored the island by bike, all the way to West End.  Rottnest Island is hilly but nothing too hard to make us turn back – although I could not remember the last time I cycled for a full day. It was nice to have time for long and short breaks!

Cycling Rottnest Island 02

Our Rottnest Island day trip itinerary by bike was about 30km long.  We started with the south coast, all the west to West End with a detour to the lighthouse, and came back via the north coast.

The other option was to take the bus. Of course, it is less tiring, but it’s not adventurous at all! I loved the freedom I felt on my bike. With no cars allowed on the island, cycling was a real pleasure!

If you don’t like cycling , you can hop on and hop off a bus that tours the island. As you have to wait for the bus to show up every time you stopped somewhere, it’s not a lot quicker. However, it’s a lot less tiring!

Rottnest Island day trip itinerary: the best beaches and snorkelling

Rottnest Island snorkelling

We had already seen many incredible beaches and coastline all around the south coast of Western Australia, but Rottnest Island was again a great surprise. I found the southern beaches of the island particularly beautiful, but West End was my favourite part as I love rocks and more dramatic landscapes. And it’s always a great pleasure to spot seals !

Rottnest Island is reputed for snorkelling. Although it was a beautiful day with 25° to 30°, the water wasn’t hot at all. I’m now very used to the temperatures in Queensland, and I look ridiculous when I have to enter the cold water. My love for underwater life still made me do it. Was it worth it? Well, I’m not sure about that.

The visibility was fantastic, despite the wind. The underwater world is pretty, but there was nothing exceptional for us who have been to the Great Barrier Reef  and are lucky to have the beautiful Flinders Reef not too far from home. Are we too spoilt with our travels? Now, I need ‘amazing’ to enter cold water like this…!

For those who unconditionally love snorkelling and those who haven’t done it a lot, make sure you have your snorkelling gear to have a look down there.

I recommend taking your time for this Rottnest Island day trip itinerary. With only a day trip to explore the island, you may feel like you should move quickly from one spot to another. But if you’re patient enough to wait for people to leave, you can easily enjoy the place by yourself. Little Salmon Bay was packed when we arrived at 12 pm. 45 minutes later, after the bus left, there was only us and another couple. The experience is very different when the place got quiet.

Rottnest Island Coast 02

Rottnest Island day trip itinerary: visit the lighthouse

I love lighthouses. They often offer the best views of the dramatic coastline. During our road trip around the south of Western Australia, I missed two opportunities to visit a lighthouse. So I got very excited when we saw the sign “lighthouse open” as we were cycling. It gave me the motivation to push harder on my pedals and climb the hill in one go whereas many others gave up and pushed their bike.

We arrived just in time for the 2 o’clock tour. They run tours every half an hour until 2.30 pm , so we were very lucky!

It was interesting to learn a bit more about the history of the island and the lighthouse from a local volunteer. And the views from up there will blow you away. Almost literally, considering the strength of the wind!

How to find quokkas on your day trip to Rottnest Island

It is very cliche but I will admit that Quokkas were a big highlight of this island trip. They’re one of the animals you really want to see during your trip around Australia .

Unfortunately, these small Australian marsupials became very rare. The imported foxes killed most of them on the mainland, where they also struggle with the bushfires. For all visitors’ pleasure, it’s a different story on Rottnest Island.

We hadn’t been cycling for more than five minutes before we spotted a few quokkas .

On Rottnest Island, quokkas are not shy at all. If you kneel down to take a closer pic or a selfie, you may actually struggle because they are curious and come too close! Rottnest Island has been named after them as the explorer thought they were big rats (rat nest…). But with their adorable happy faces, they are a lot cuter than big rats! Quokkas are supposed to be nocturnal. Although we did see more and more of them as the sun was going down, we still could spot many during the day.

We saw many quokkas at our first stop on the south coast of the island (Henrietta Rocks). The place with the highest number of quokkas during our day visit was the road leading to the lighthouse. And when we reached back the ferry area at night, quokkas were everywhere!

To sum up: don’t plan your Rottnest Island day trip itinerary according to the quokkas , we saw them almost everywhere and at any time of the day.

Rottnest Island Quokka

Responsible travel tip : Don’t feed wild animals, it’s never good for them. It can make them sick, change their natural behaviours and even disrupt an entire ecosystem.

If you can stay overnight on Rottnest Island

We only had time for a day trip to Rottnest Island. Plus, accommodations were fully booked as we were travelling during the school holidays. But if you have time to spend one night there, it’s worth it. You’ll get to see more quokkas and you will have more time to explore all the beautiful bays.

Accommodations can get expensive but you can find good deals if you are travelling as a group or a family.

Camping is the cheapest option to stay on Rottnest Island, but it’s not easy to organise. You can read the guidelines here . For a short trip, I wouldn’t recommend it. If you’re travelling on a budget, cabins or a dormitory * could be a good alternative.

If you’re not on a budget, check out Hotel Rottnest * and Karma Rottnest *.

Yeah, Western Australia is a bit far away… even for Australians! But that’s probably the only downside of this trip 😉

The best things to do on Rottnest Island...

When's the best time to visit Rottnest Island?

The weather in Australia’s southwest is unlike any other region in Western Australia. According to the local Aboriginal culture, instead of your ordinary summer, autumn, winter, spring – this region has six varying seasons that range from hot and dry to cold and wet and everything in between.

The original inhabitants of this land were nomadic hunters who followed this six season calendar to navigate the varied weather and wildlife patterns, and when you visit you will see why! While you may not be hunting, planning around this traditional seasonal calendar is the best way to get an accurate representation of the weather during different months of the year so you know what to pack, and when to plan your adventure to experience the top things to do on Rottnest Island.

It is also worthwhile checking out Western Australia’s nature’s calendar to see what natural events and attractions occur at different times of the year, such as whale watching, seals and sea lions, manta rays and so on.

When it comes to best time to visit Rottnest Island, there really is no ‘right’ time – only preferences. If you are dreaming of a summery snorkel filled adventure, I would recommend travelling here in February-March when the weather is warm and the water is inviting, but the deep heat of summer has started to dissipate. However, if you don’t mind the cooler water termperatures, October-November is a great time to catch a glimpse of the ‘humpback highway’ migration and the wildflowers in bloom.

Can you do Rottnest Island in a day?

Absolutely! Rottnest Island in a day is completely doable. I biked around the entire island in under 6 hours – albeit I did this very quickly, but it’s definitely possible to experience all the beauty this island has to offer with a day trip to Rottnest Island.

Regardless of how long you have to visit, a day trip to Rottnest Island is easily one of the best things to do in Perth . However, if I were to do this again I would recommend allowing a full 8 hours to experience it, as I did find myself rushing towards the end of the day to make the ferry home.

The best things to do on Rottnest Island...

How to get to and around Rottnest Island...

Seven thousand years ago Rotto was connected to the mainland, but over time it has separated to become itss own little city retreat. Now with around 19km of ocean between Rottnest and the mainland, it is only accessible by ferry (or air) from Perth .

You can easily catch a ferry from Fremantle across to Rottnest Island for the day for around $73 per person return, with the option to add bike hire for an additional $22. These ferries travel back and forth every few hours, but you ordinarily have to book ahead of time to ensure you get a spot.

If you want to get the most out of a day trip to Rottnest Island, I recommend travelling over on a morning ferry and booking your return on the latest ferry (usually around 4pm), so you have plenty of time to explore. If you can, I would also recommend renting a bike for the day. This is one of the best way to get around on a Rottnest Island day trip (not to mention the most fun!) and one of the best things to do in Perth .

Top tip: If you are planning on biking around the island, I recommend picking up your rental from a shop on the island or including it as part of your ferry fare. The ride over can get a little choppy, and so it can be a little nerve wracking seeing your personal bike sway side to side – eek!

The best things to do on Rottnest Island...

Whether you are planning a day trip to Rottnest Island or looking to stay a little longer, these are the top things to do on Rottnest Island.

1. Cycle around the island

Rottnest Island is only 11km long and 4.5km wide, making it very bike friendly. With so many little bays and beaches to explore, a bike really is the best way to get around on a day trip to Rottnest Island.

There are three main biking routes around Rottnest Island of varied lengths, depending on what you want to see. Ride 1 and 2 are the smallest and explore the east side of the island, around the major settlement (where the ferry arrives). These are great if you want to spend your day exploring the local marine life or relaxing on the beach. These range between 4-10km and can take up to 3-4 hours to ride.

The longest biking trail is ride 3, which is a 22km circuit that spans the entire island. This is listed as a 3-4 hour ride, but i would allow more time to stop and explore everything on the way. Personally this took me around six, including stops at Cathedral Rocks and to see a quokka in the wild.

It is mostly flat and easy terrain but after the 22km your legs will be feeling it! This is the only bike route that gives you access to the west end and all the beauty tucked away in this corner of the island. This is definitely one of the best things to do on Rottnest Island to experience it all.

Biking not the right option for you? No worries! There are also ‘ hop-on-hop-off” style buses available.

The best things to do on Rottnest Island...

2. Spot a quokka

One of the best things to do on Rottnest Island is to keep an eye out for quokkas! You may have seen these smiley little creatures, best identified by their toothey grins in the classic Rottnest Island selfie shot. These little marsupials are roughly the size of a domestic cat and can only be found in this region of Western Australia .

Quokkas can be found in large numbers in the main township on the island once you get off the ferry. So you won’t have to venture far to find one!

It is worth noting that although these little creatures roam around during the daylight hours, quokkas are mainly nocturnal animals. They have only started becoming more active in the daylight due to availability of food from tourists. As such, these little guys can be a bit mischievous and are wont hesitate to have a nibble of your food. So if you’re heading to the island to capture the Western Australia bucket list selfie, just be mindful to not perpetuate this by feeding them. They are only found in this one corner of the world, we want to keep them safe.

Looking for a wild encounter with a quokka? These beautiful creatures can also be found in plenty of wild and beautiful places throughout the island. If you are bike riding around the island, keep your eyes peeled on the sides of the road – you’re bound to spot a few. These quokkas are a little more shy and less food orientated, so it’s worthwhile adventuring to see them in their natural habitat. Seeing their little smiles is an absolute must-do for any Australia bucket list and is one of the best things to do on Rottnest Island for good reason!

The best things to do on Rottnest Island...

3. Explore the snorkel trails

Rottnest Island is a snorkeller’s dream (but really!) and should definitely be on the list if you are looking for fun things to do on Rottnest Island. When I arrived, I couldn’t stop saying “wow” everytime we turned another corner to see another beach or bay. The water here is the kind of sparkling blue that just makes you want to dive right in no matter the temperature.

Some of the top snorkel-friendly spots include The Basin, Parakeet Bay and Little Armstrong Bay, but I would recommend heading out to Little Salmon Bay and Parker Point. These are where the ‘snorkel trails’ can be found which feature a series of info panels to learn about the sea life around you.

4. Visit the seals in the West End

When you arrive in the West End on Rottnest Island, don’t miss the chance to see the seals from the Cathedral Rocks Viewing Platform . This is the perfect viewing platform to see the long nosed Fur Seal colony in their natural environment, and one of the best things to do on Rottnest Island, but it can be easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

As you make your way toward Cape Vlamingh and Fish Hook Bay, there will be a path that leads down to the viewing platform. This path to Cathedral Rocks is partially concealed by the scrub. It is right across from Lexi’s on Rotto cafe – so in a pinch the cafe owner will help point you in the right direction!

The best things to do on Rottnest Island...

5. Learn about the true Wadjemup Bidi

Wadjemup Bidi is the traditional name for this island paradise held by the local aboriginal people. If you are interested in learning about cultural and spiritual significance of the island, join an immersive Aboriginal tour. There are also a range of Aboriginal educational areas dotted around the island if you are curious to learn more!

6. Swim, relax or paddle on the beach

Whether you choose to bike or ride the shuttle, a day trip to Rottnest Island wouldn’t be complete without a stop at one of the beautiful beaches. Hiring a kayak or stand up paddle board is a great idea if you’re looking for fun things to do on Rottnest Island. Otherwise, just kick back and relax on one of the (many!) beaches, and soak up the beauty of this island.

The best things to do on Rottnest Island...

7. Grab a coffee from Lexi’s on Rotto

There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat and coffee on the island, but nothing quite beats a coffee at Lexi’s on Rotto. This little pink caravan coffee house is located in the West End and is the perfect place to kick back and relax.

Lounge in their beautiful resort-style lounge chairs for a bit before beginning the journey back to the main settlement on the other side of the island. Easily one of the top things to do on Rottnest Island!

The best things to do on Rottnest Island...

8. Visit Wadjemup Lighthouse

This lighthouse is located at the highest point of Rotto, and is the fourth tallest lighthouse is Australia. While the lighthouse itself is closed to visitors, it offers spectacular views of Perth city in the distance, so is worth the detour! The walk up here is definitely one of the best things to do on Rottnest Island.

9. Go whale watching

The humpback migration is one of the most majestic and miraculous natural events to experience in Western Australia. With over 35,000 whales making their way through these waters it is one of the best things to do in Australia – and Rotto is one of the best places to do it! If you are planning a day trip to Rottnest Island in these months, don’t miss the chance to go whale watching. There are plenty of whale watching tours to choose from that will give you a front row seat to this natural highway spectacle.

How to have the Best Rottnest Island Day Trip from a Local

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 17/02/2024

A Rottnest Island day trip was one of my favourite recent travel experiences. Lovely little Rottnest Island is just 18kms from the center of Perth. The island is loved by locals as much as tourists.

There are no cars on Rottnest Island and it has 20 bays, 63 beaches and 45 kilometres of cycling paths. Artifacts pre-dating 6,500 years have been found on Rottnest Island so it appears that the Aboriginals were also big fans.

Perth_rottnest_island_water

I don’t live in Perth but my oldest dearest friend does – and her husband grew up there. She and her 14 and 10-year-old sons (frequent Rottnest visitors) came with me on my Rottnest Island Day Trip and filled me in on how to have the best possible day on this stunning island, a must on any Perth Itinerary !

Things to Book Before You Leave Home Few things are more frustrating on vacation than missing out on that amazing hotel or tour because it is sold out. Here are our top things to book before your vacation. 🐨 Most Popular Tours in Perth: 1. Rottnest Island – my top pick – don’t miss visiting this beautiful island 2. Dive with Sharks – this one has limited spots so booking is key 3. Pinnacles and Swan Valley Wine Trip – jaw-dropping natural beauty + great Aussie wine 4. See Perth on a Segway Tour – the most fun way to zip around Perth 🛏️ Where to Stay in Perth : 1. The Como Treasury – Perth’s most stylish hotel in the heart of downtown 2. QT Perth – the quirky style choice also downtown 3. The Alex Northbridge – sleek modern design 4. The Hougoumont Fremantle – boutique hotel made from sea containers

There are two options for a Rottnest day trip. Join an organised tour or organize the trip yourself. Once you are on Rottnest Island you can choose to join a tour or to explore the island on your own.

The best option for you depends on your circumstances. If you are short on time or there are a few of you then an organised tour can be a great idea.

If you would prefer to have all of the administration taken care off for you but want to explore the island on a bike on your own the day trip to Rottnest from Fremantle or Perth does all of this and will pick you up and drop you back at your hotel.

⇒ If you want fully guided of Rottnest Island tours including a bus trip around the island then the Rottnest Island All-Inclusive Tour is the tour for you. This is a great option if you’re travelling with kids, older people or anyone who is not keen to explore via a bicycle.

⇒ If you would like to explore Rottnest Island from the water than this Rottnest by Sea day tour is perfect. Your boat leaves Fremantle and then it explores Rottnest Island by pulling into different bays and beaches across the day.

Perth_rottnest_island_steps-to-beach

There are quite a few options for how to get to Rottnest Island and it can be a little confusing. Three different Rottnest ferry companies service Rottnest Island – Rottnest Express , Sealink and Rottnest Fast Ferries – and there are multiple ferry stops in Freemantle, Perth and Hillarys.

Perth_rottnest_island_b-shed

The best ferry for you will depend on where you are staying. If you are staying in North Perth then Hillary’s Boat Harbour is a good place to catch the ferry to Rottnest Island. However, there are only a few ferries for a Rottnest Island day trip from Hillayr’s each day and they take 45 minutes.

The fastest route for a Rottnest Island one day trip is from Fremantle at either B-shed or North Fremantle . This route takes 35 minutes. B-shed has a nice coffee place as well as somewhere for snacks – but I was told that the Rottnest Island bakery was much better and to save room in my stomach!

Perth_rottnest_island_b-shed-snack-stalls

It is possible to catch the ferry to Rottnest Island from Perth City Centre . The downsides are that the Rottnest Island day trip from Perth is the most expensive option and will take 90 minutes as this ferry also stops in Fremantle before going to Rottnest. The upside is that you will cruise along the Swan River which many people choose to do as a separate activity.

All of the ferry companies offer a range of deals when buying ferry tickets. These include combining ferry tickets with bike hire, the Rottnest Island bus, a helicopter ride, skydiving, whale watching cruises in season (Aug-Nov), equipment hire and tours.

Travel Expert Tip – Book Your Rottnest Island Ferry at least 24 hours in advance Rottnest Island is one of the most popular things to do in Perth for both visitors and locals. Tickets sell out fast, particularly in the summer. Book your ticket ahead of time to avoid disappointment and long queues.

The Rottnest ferry arrives into and leaves from Thomson Bay and the Rottnest Island Visitor Centre is just a short walk away. Grab a map and ask the friendly staff about everything from hiring a bike to booking a tour. The Visitor Centre is open 7 days a week from 730am and only closes 30 minutes after the last ferry has left.

Perth_rottnest_island_ferry

Rottnest Island has 45kms of cycling paths; this is the best way to explore the island. I would recommend pre-booking your bike hire. It is possible to prebook both your bike hire and ferry tickets together or hire an e-bike .

Or you can pre- book your bike hire with Pedal and Flipper and just pick it up when you arrive (Pedal and Flipper is about a 5-minute walk from where the ferry drops you on Rottnest Island).

Perth_rottnest_island_boats-on-sea

There are multiple options in terms of cycling paths depending on how long you are happy to ride. We covered about half of the Rottnest Island cycling path (details below) but if I had of had more time I definitely would have headed down to Cape Vlamingh (this is a 22km or 3-5 hour trip). I found the most deserted parts of Rottnest Island to be the most beautiful.

Set off from Thomson Bay and your first stop will be the Basin. The Basin is just stunning with blue-green waters. a great spot for snorkelling and photos.

Perth_rottnest_island_salmon-bay-4

Cycle along to Georgie Bay and Parakeet Bay. Then it depends on how much time you have – and how much time you want to spend cycling rather than lying on the beach or eating!

For the shorter loop turn left at Parakeet Bay and head down to the stunning Salmon Bay. The southern coastline was my favourite as the colours were jaw-dropping.

Head down to Little Salmon Bay and Parker Point and then back to Thomson Bay via Porpoise Bay. The longer route involves going straight ahead at Parakeet Bay and then turning left at Strickland Bay.

And if you want to be beyond thorough don’t turn left at Stricklan Bay and continue all the way to Cape Vlamingh. Whilst there aren’t loads of hills on Rottnest there are still a few so do take into account your cycling fitness!

Perth_rottnest_island_salmon-bay-5

Rottnest Island has 63 beaches and 20 bays! And pretty much all of them are ready for swimmers and sunbathers! The beaches in the North tend to be a bit more sheltered, whereas some of those in the south are beautiful but quite rugged.

Pinky’s Beach and the Basin are two of the most popular beaches. They are both lovely and nice and close to Thomson Bay!

I highly recommend the beautiful Little Salmon Bay. It is a bit farther away from Thomson Bay so not as busy and it is also a great spot for snorkeling. Geordie Bay and Parakeet Bay are also spectacular.

Perth_rottnest_island_the-basin

Do note that swimming and snorkelling are not allowed at Cathedral Rocks or and the West End and look out for danger signs.

Perth_rottnest_island_quokka-selfie

The Quokka looks like a little kangaroo and is native to Rottnest Island. The first recorded European visitor to Rottnest Island, William de Vlamingn, named the island Rotte Nest (meaning rat’s nest) after he mistook the quokkas for rats. It is no wonder that Quokkas are known as the world’s happiest animals – they live on Rottnest Island!

Perth_rottnest_island_spotting-a-quokka

The quokkas roam free across Rottnest Island but seem to like spending a lot of time around the bakery and then the Rottnest Hotel from late afternoon.

Rottnest Island is highly encouraging of the Quokka selfie phenomenon, even providing full details of how to get the best Quokka selfie. The Quokka is almost an Australian landmark these days.

Perth_rottnest_island_quokka-selfie-board

However, the Quokkas are wild animals so don’t touch them and don’t feed them (all very Gremlins like). It is best to sit and wait and let them come to you.

They are friendly little fellows and there are loads of them (between 10,000 and 12,000) so as long as you have a bit of time you are unlikely to be unsuccessful when it comes to acquiring a Quokka selfie.

Perth_rottnest_island_quokka

Rottnest Island is home to over 135 species of tropical fish! The most popular spots for snorkeling are Parakeet Bay, Parker Point, Little Salmon Bay, The Basin and Little Armstrong Bay.

Collect your snorkeling brochure from Rottnest Island’s Visitors Centre and find out about guided snorkeling tours. Hire your snorkeling equipment at Pedal and Flipper.

Perth_rottnest_island_salmon-bay

The Quokkas are, of course, the poster boys for Rottnest Island. But Rottnest is also home to quite a few other kinds of wildlife. If you’re into watching birds head west to the West End Boardwalk near Cathedral Rocks. Nearby Fish Hook Bay is home to many Osprey nests.

There are around 35,000 Humpback and Southern Right whales around Rottnest Island. The best time to see them is between September and December.

This is when they are gaining strength and playing with their newborns. The whales can often be seen from the island, particularly around the West End Boardwalk.

Perth_rottnest_island_reeds-and-boats

The seals of Rottnest Island are mostly clustered around the Cathedral Rocks at the west end of the island. From the viewing platform, it is possible to get quite close to the New Zealand fur seals colony.

Wadjemupu Bibi is 45kms of walking trails that take you inland and out to the bays and beaches of Rottnest Island and are a great way to explore the island in-depth. There are five different parts of the trails which vary in length from 5.9km to 10kms.

Rottnest Island is a perfect play to try something you have never done before! Aquaplay is a water adventure playground that offers sea-bike tours, pedal-board and stand-up paddleboard hire, water bikes and giant inflatables.

Combine a 20-minute flight with Western Australia’s only island skydive experience with Skydive Geronimo !

Perth_rottnest_island_pink-lake-5

For a small island, Rottnest has a lot of different options for getting around! Not only is there a hop on hop off bus which covers the island, Rottnest even has its own railway. If you’re keen to cycle but worried about the hills grab an e-bike. Or for something different, explore the island via a segway.

Perth_rottnest_island_jeannies-lookout

See Rottnest Island from above on a helicopter ride, joy flight or seaplane. Or see it from the water on a Rottnest Cruise or via a glass-bottom sea-kayak. There is a mode of transport for everyone and every mood on Rottnest Island!

Yes, you can. There is a range of Rottnest accommodation options available – from camping to a youth hostel to dorms. Thank goodness there are now some more upmarket options available – the best of which is the fabulous Discovery Glamping Resort which opened in March 2019.

Perth_rottnest_island_lighthouse

Discovery Glamping Resort features 83 glamping tents across categories from a standard (56 square metres) to deluxe (98 square metres). Deluxe tends feature walk-in wardrobes and double vanities and some have uninterrupted views of the Indian ocean. All of the tents have en suites and a furnished deck.

The tents are made from sustainable materials and were designed to keep cool, so no air conditioning exists. Discovery Resort Rottnest Island is adjacent to popular Pink beach and it has a beach club and guests only pool.

The most famous spot is the Rottnest Bakery . Locals belove this iconic bakery. I was told not to eat anything at B-shed as I needed to hold off for something at the Rottnest Bakery.

The ingredients are sourced locally, the bread is baked on premise daily and Rottnest Bakery is best known for its organic meat pies and jam and cream doughnuts. And all the quokkas that hang out there.

Perth_rottnest_island_dome

When you’re ready for a glass of wine or a terrific meal head to Hotel Rottnest . It has a fantastic location virtually on the water and is frequented by many Quokkas.

The menu is modern Australian pub cuisine with lots of seafood, pizzas and salads. I went with fish and chips and they were outstanding – as was the Western Australian wine.

Perth_rottnest_island_parker-point

Rottnest Island is VERY relaxed and casual. Dress for comfort and protection from the sun and easy access to your swimsuit. I recommend taking a day pack with bathers, sunscreen, a towel, cap or sun hat and a water bottle.

There are a few water fountains across the island but not loads so make sure your water bottle is full when you leave the visitor’s centre area.

Perth_rottnest_island_parker-point-2

Like Perth, the weather on Rottnest Island is pretty good all year round. Summers tend to be dry and Rottnest tends to be a couple of degrees cooler than Perth.

Winters are mild and rainy. Summers hit 30 degrees and above and winter is seldom cooler than 9 degrees Celsius. However, like Perth, it can get windy, so do check ferry schedules the day before you head to Rottnest Island. Rottnest will be busiest during Perth’s school holiday periods.

However, I visited early January, one of the busiest times, and it still didn’t feel full and there were loads of beaches that were quite empty.

⇒ Book your ferry ticket at least a day in advance both ways. Tickets do sell out and queues can get long!

⇒ Prebook your bike hire.

⇒ The waves between Fremantle and Rottnest can get high and it can be a bumpy trip. If you’re nervous about being on a boat and/or prone to seasickness have a bag with you and sit inside and focus on the horizon. Even on a mild day, this can be a bumpy ride.

⇒ Rottnest Island does have a hop on hop off bus . This bus covers the entire island and stops at all the key beaches and sights. Buses run approx every 30 minutes.

Perth is located on the southwest coast of Western Australia on the Swan River. Do remember that Australia is big and a flight from sydney to Perth takes five hours (although it is usually much faster on the way back due to winds). Perth is an international airport and most major airlines fly to Perth after a stopover in Asia.

There was considerable publicity of late when Qantas announced a direct flight from London to Perth taking 16 1/2 hours. I personally have not taken this flight yet but Australian friends have and all have been very positive about the flight and particularly that they felt their jet lag was much better than normal.

⇒ Flights to Perth

If you’re only staying in Perth for a couple of days there is really no need to hire a car. Perth has free CAT buses within the city centre. There is a train line that runs through Perth and the suburbs including popular Fremantle. And there is Uber!

If you are staying longer than a couple of days then I would highly recommend hiring a car . Perth is a very easy city to drive around and there is generally loads of parking.

If you are from a big city you may find the frequency of Perth public transport a little frustrating. Also, this is a sprawling city so the locals will be driving most places.

Perth has some fantastic boutique hotels! Indeed, it is hard to choose amongst all of the great options – and they also tend to be very good value for accommodation of this standard.

My favourite is Como the Treasury . The Victorian era building and former barracks were restored to reveal high ceilings, cornices and balconies that were then styled with a modern touch. This is a very special hotel with a unique feel.

Como The Treasury Hotel Perth

It has 48 guest rooms, one of the hottest restaurants in Perth (Wildflower, a glassed-in building on the rooftop featuring a traditional Aboriginal style seasonal menu), a Como Shambhala spa and connected bars which allow you to take your glass of wine all through the hotel! And it is located literally in the heart of the city.

I love the QT hotels which are across Australia and New Zealand. Yes, they are a chain but they are a small chain. QT Hotels tend to have great inner-city locations, eclectic and stylish designs and great bars and restaurants. Perth’s QT hotel is more of the same with a fab rooftop bar and a great Italian restaurant, Santini Grill.

The Alex Hotel is located in quirky Northbridge, one of Perth’s inner-city suburbs and home to some of its most interesting and edgy restaurants and bars. Check out The Shadow Wine Bar and use one of their bikes to head down to Cottesloe Beach.

The Hougoumont is in lovely little Fremantle, one of Perth’s most happening areas and the kick off point for several Rottnest Island ferries. This hotel was actually built using shipping container construction methods!

How To Plan the Perfect Rottnest Island day trip

Quokkas are the main reason people decide to take a Rottnest Island Day Trip. And who could blame them? Friendly, smiling little creatures with tiny hands, quokkas are one of the cutest animals you’ll ever see. But what else should go on your Rottnest Island Day trip itinerary? Read on for a bunch more ideas and why we think Rottnest Island is the perfect day out from Perth.

Wardan Nara Bidi, the indigenous name for the island, offers a lot more than just running around looking for little animals.

Is Rottnest Island Worth Visiting?

Look for quokkas, find a few of the 63 amazing beaches, try skydiving, do some whale watching, take a walk, how to get to rottnest island, ride a bike, rottnest island hoho bus, rottnest island day tours.

If you’re considering a Rottnest Island Day Trip , then you probably want to know if it’s worth the effort and expense. What does the island offer that you can’t get on the mainland?

The Basin, Pinky Beach and Bathurst Lighthouse at Rottnest Island, near Perth in Western Australia.

Honestly, quite a lot, from beautiful beaches, to great cycling, and walking tracks and of course quokkas! It is also a great chance to get away from the city.

What are the best things to see and do on Rottnest Island

There are things to do on Rottnest Island that will make everyone happy – from kids to adults. And it’s close enough to the city that travelling there is a pleasure rather than a burden.

Quokkas are adorable, smiley-faced creatures that will be a highlight on your Rottnest Island Day Trip. They’re pretty brave and tame, so they’ll turn up all over the island. This includes at the supermarket, in pubs, and on the beach.

Australia, Quokka on Rottnest Island

Just remember that they’re wild animals, and you should never touch or feed the quokkas, no matter how cute they are. They really don’t enjoy selfies either so resist the urge!

Rottnest Island has 63 incredible beaches for you to explore, as well as a vast range of activities you can do there. Try snorkeling at Little Salmon Bay or Parker Point; either are good choices.

Little parakeet bay on Rottnest island

Take a trip in the glass-bottomed underwater sub explorer if you don’t enjoy snorkelling or swim at the popular beaches at the Basin, Pinky Beach, Salmon Bay, or Little Armstrong Bay.

If you’re a thrill-seeker, go skydiving and see Rottnest from the above . This makes a great birthday or special occasion surprise!

Skydive Rottnest Island

If like me you are not quite brave enough to sky dive yet, there are also glorious scenic flights – same view less anxiety!

You can join a tour to see whales moving slowly along the coast in April and between August and November.

The Wadjemup Bidi Trails are some of the most popular things to do on Rottnest Island. This network of trails explores the best that Rottnest offers as an A-Class Nature Reserve, including fabulous beaches, bays, flora, and fauna. Many of the landmarks along the way are culturally significant to the local Indigenous tribe and environmentally significant. There are five main sections to the trail:

  • Wardan Nara Bidi, which is 10km long and takes in the WWII relics on the island
  • Ngank Yira Bidi, which is 9.4km long and travels from Thomson Bay to Oliver Hill
  • Karlinyah Bidi, a shorter trail at 5.9km that travels along beaches.
  • Gabbi Karniny Bidi, a 9.7km loop from Thomson Bay
  • Ngank Wen Bidi, a 7.6km trail that will take you past the best spots for seeing marine life!

Rocky bay at Rottnest island in Australia

These are just some of the things you can do on a Rottnest Island Day Trip. So, decide what you’d like to do and get out there to have some fun!

The first thing you need to do when planning a Rottnest day trip is to book your transport to the island. Rottnest Island is just 10km or 11 miles off the coast and can be reached by ferry or tour. Ferries depart from Fremantle, Hillary’s Boat Harbour, and Perth City. They take between 45 and 90 minutes to reach the island, depending on where you leave from.   You can purchase combined ferry and Rottnest Island ferry tickets online or buy a ferry ticket and pay your park entry on arrival.

Rottnest Island Ferry

There are several ferry companies you can go with, including:

  • Rottnest Fast Ferries
  • Rottnest Express
  • SeaLink Rottnest Island

Each of these companies offers you the chance to package other tours and experiences at the same time. They also provide safe, comfortable, and modern ferries.

While you’re planning, keep these Rottnest ferry tips in mind:

  • Book your ferry a few days ahead of time in the peak season.
  • The Rottnest Express Ferry offers Cheap Tuesdays, or check local travel brochures for discount coupons.
  • If you get seasick, sit on the bottom deck; it’s usually less bumpy there. Or try to stay outside.
  • You’ll have to pay an island landing fee once you arrive, so have some money handy.

How to get around Rottnest Island

There are roads on Rottnest Island, but no cars, so you will have to think about your transport options once you get there. Here’s what’s available:

Bikes are the most popular way to get around; you can bring yours on the ferry with you for an extra $15. If you don’t have a bike, then you can hire one. Many ferry companies offer combination ferry and bike hire, so inquire before you book your ferry ticket.

Australia, coast and vegation on Indian ocean in Rottnest Island, bicycles are a usual mode of transport

Bike hire is usually around $35 a day. Please make sure you check your bike’s condition before you take it out. Some bikes are not in good working order, and you don’t want to end up with one that breaks halfway around the island. If you prefer, you can tour by Segway ?

The hop-on-hop-off bus is another popular way to see the island. The Rottnest Explorer bus service leaves every half an hour from the main bus stop. It stops at Rottnest’s best and most popular beaches and attractions. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children, and it’s well worth the price if you don’t want to bike around.

There are dozens of tours to Rottnest Island, and it’s tough to decide which one to pick. Start by considering if you want a fully escorted experience or prefer an independent package giving you the freedom to explore the island at your leisure.

Three of the best inclusive tours are:

  • From Perth or Fremantle : Rottnest Island Grand Tour – includes Sealink Ferry, 4 hour island tour including seeing the quokkas and taking a historic train ride. Light lunch also provided. See full day’s schedule here
  • From Rottnest Island – Rottnest Island: Lux Seafood Cruis e – If your idea of paradise includes a seven course degustation of the freshest seafood served with unlimited drinks this tour is a must – view the menu here

If you like to be independent, these packages include everything you need for a fun day on the island.

  • Perth or Fremantle : Rottnest Island Ferry and Bus Tour – If you prefer the HOHO to cycle around the island.
  • From Fremantle : Rottnest Island Ferry, Snorkel and Bike Hire – This tour includes everything you need for a fun day on the island.

These tours and packages include 24-hour cancellations, so you can change your mind if this weather forecast is not great.

If you’re looking to get out of Perth for the day , then a Rottnest Island Day Trip is a perfect choice. Close to the city, it offers incredible beaches and some of the cutest animal experiences possible!

Looking over the bushland and into the ocean at Rottnest Island.

Whether you are planning a day trip or an overnight stay on Rottnest Island, expect to be wowed. With its incredible beaches, its cute wildlife and its small island tropical vibes.

Rottnest Island also known as Wadjemup is the land of the spirits.

Located off the coast of Fremantle, Perth is this little island measuring 11km long and 4.5km wide. Which is hard to believe when there is so much to do there. No cars are permitted on Rottnest, which means the main forms of transport are cycling, walking or the bus.

Travellers from all over the world come to visit Rottnest for its world-renowned white beaches, its snorkeling opportunities and its local mascot, the Quokka.

An easy getaway from Perth, Rottnest Island/Wadejemup is a must-see destination when travelling through WA.

Did you know; Rotto is home to 63 beaches and 20 bays, which is crazy when you think how small it is!

Everything you need to know about Rottnest Island

Rottnest island best time to visit.

The best time to visit Rotto is in the seasons of Spring and Autumn. This allows you to explore this beautiful island without the crowds and the summer madness.

I visited the island in the Months of March and May and it was still warm enough to swim and explore in a T-shirt and shorts.

How to get to Rottnest Island

The most common way to get to Rotto is by taking one of the Rottnest Island Ferries.

The 3 ferry companies that transport passengers from mainland Perth to this little slice of paradise are: Rottnest Fast Ferries , Rottnest Express and Sealink .

All the ferries have similar departure times and prices.

Girls carrying lots of bags for a camping trip.

Rottnest Express

Departs from: Fremantle B Shed

Departure times: 7.30am, 8.30am, 9.30am, 10am, 11.30am, 1.30pm, 4pm

Departs Rottnest: 8.30am, 10.30am, 11.45am, 2.30pm, 4.30pm, 5pm, 5.30pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm

Rottnest Island Ferry tickets, *rough* round trip price:  $78 (£41)

Sealink :

Departs from: Fremantle or Perth

Departure times (check location): 7.00am, 8.30am, 9am, 9.45am, 11am, 3.30pm

Departs Rottnest: 8am, 10am, 11am, 2.30pm, 4pm, 4.45pm

Rottnest Island Ferry tickets, *rough* round trip price:: $74 (£39)

Rottnest Fast Ferries

Departs from: Hilarys Harbour

Departure times: 7.30am, 10am and 3pm

Departs Rottnest: 8.15am, 11.15, 4.30pm

Rottnest Island Ferry tickets, *rough* round trip price: $89 (£47)

If you are planning on staying overnight (which I recommend you do!) and you have a lot of luggage like tents and eskys ect. Then, for $2/$3 per bag, the ferry staff will deliver the items to your accommodation.  Check each site for further details.

When you are booking your transport you will see an admission fee to the island. As the ferry companies handle this payment, you will not need to worry when you land at the dock. The price per adult is $20 (£10.50) for a day trip and $27 (£14) for overnight.

This fee contributes to the conservation of the island and the upkeep of facilities.

A good tip for getting a cheaper ferry ticket is to check out the Bookme website, as they have lots of discounted deals on excursions all over Australia.

Surprisingly, Rottnest island has an airport. These flights only return from Perth and are geared towards scenic flights rather than a means of transportation.

If you know someone with a boat, you can also get to Rottnest that way.

Where to stay on Rottnest Island

Types of rottnest island accommodation .

Like transport, accommodation on Rottnest island isn’t cheap.

If you are planning to stay on Rottnest island, book in advance. As the island is so small, there aren’t many options.

I recommend camping on the island as it is the most affordable way to see Rotto after hours.

A non-powered campsite at Camp Rottnest starts at $40 (£21). Each plot comes with a picnic bench and has a large area to pitch your tent.

There are toilet facilities with hot water showers, plenty of BBQs and a kitchen area.

Camp Rottnest is located right on the edge of Pinky’s beach. In less than a 10 minute walk, you can go from your tent to the ocean.

Girls sitting in the dark all eating bbq food.

If your budget allows and you aren’t a tent person, then Rottnest Island Glamping might be for you.

Discovery Resorts ‘ superior tents have a gorgeous layout with a double bed, ensuite, fridge, microwave, tea/coffee maker, patio area, free wifi and breakfast included.

An overnight glamping trip in Rottnest starts at around $349 (£184).

Normally, I would recommend a hostel over any other style of accommodation, but not this time.

Kingstown Barracks (part of Stay Rottnest) have hostel-style dorm rooms but the starting prices in the quiet season are $70pn (£37) and only continue upwards.

Stay Rottnest also offers cabins for accommodation from $148pn (£78).

If you are looking for something boujee and luxurious, then you will want to stay at Samphire Resort . Located near Thomson Bay, Pinky beach and The basin. This beautiful hotel has an outside pool, shared lounge, restaurant and bar.

A queen room with balcony, mini fridge, wifi and ensuite will cost around $577pn (£304).

Packing list for Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is a tropical paradise, so keep that in mind when packing. With its own mini-weather forecast you can expect sun nearly all year round. There is never really a bad time to go to Rotto.

Here is what I recommend packing for an overnight stay:

  • Suncream
  • Beach towel
  • flip flops/burks
  • Trainers (for cycling)
  • Portable charger
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Jumper/hoodie for the evening
  • An esky of food and drinks
  • Camera/phone
  • Snorkelling gear (also available for hire)

Picnic food. Sausage rolls, crackers with brie and strawberries, cheetos, carrot sticks and peanut butter sandwiches.

Rottnest island history

Unfortunately, Rottnest island has a dark history. It wasn’t always smiling Quokkas and happy tourists.

The island was first discovered or at least documented in 1696 by a man named Willem De Vlamingh who called it “rat nest island” because of all the Quokkas.

Rottnest Island then became an Aboriginal prison and a forced labour camp between 1838 – 1903.

Records show that 3,700 Aboriginal boys and men were sent there with ages ranging from 8 to 70.

During these dark times of harsh treatment and terrible living conditions, 373 men died and were placed into unmarked graves on the island.

After the prison closed, the 373 buried seemed to be forgotten. This was one of Australia’s largest aboriginal burial grounds and yet they stuck a budget camping ground on top of it.

Wrongly, in 1970, human remains were discovered when they were extending the sewage system for the golf course and then just reburied and covered up.

It wasn’t until 1985 when many people found out about the reburial and were outraged that the cemetery was recorded and protected under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 .

In 1992, the cemetery was fenced off and a sign for the public was placed on the grounds to educate people and remember the fallen.

Click here for the locations mentioned in this blog post. And yes that is a beaver emoji, but we will pretend it is a Quokka!

Can you do Rottnest in a day?

You can explore Rottnest island in a day, but to really get the most out of the experience, I recommend an overnight stay. That way you can watch a beautiful sunset, see the island after all the tourists have gone home and get cute Quokka selfies when they are at their most active.

How long should you stay on Rottnest island?

I think staying on Rottnest Island for 1 night is plenty of time to see this tropical paradise.

If your budget allows and you are a keen snorkeller, then maybe a 2nd night, but I do not think it is necessary.

Getting around Rottnest Island

Rent a bike to cruise around the island.

Bike hire on Rottnest Island is really easy to do and quite affordable. The Pedal and Flipper which is located 5 minutes’ walk from the bakery, will fit you with the right size bike and includes a helmet and padlock in the price.

As the name suggests, you can also hire snorkel gear!

The price for a bike is $30 (£16) for 24 hours with an additional $14-$16 (£7-£9) for any extra days.

You can also get a bike with a surfboard rack for an extra $11 (£6).

A snorkel set is $21 (£11) for 24 hours with an additional $15 (£8) for extra days.

The Pedal and Flipper also rents out paddleboards for $75 (£39.50).

Bus tours and daily shuttles

If you prefer not to cycle and want to sit back, relax, and take in the sights, then the hop-on, hop-off bus may be the option for you.

Tickets for this mode of transport are $25 per adult. The Rottnest Island Explorer bus stops at all the must see spots.

Walking trails around the island

Rottnest Island has several trails that will get you walking all over the island.

While this method may take you longer than a bus or cycling, it will allow you to see the island from a different point of view.

Rottnest Island is made up of five walking trails, with the full island walk being 45km.

The whole walk will take a few days, but with the five trails interconnected, you can do different sections throughout your time there.

Pick up a map at the Rottnest Island visitor centre, pack plenty of water, and be aware of the sun’s temperatures before embarking on your journey.

Things to do on Rottnest Island

Best snorkelling spots on rottnest island.

With 63 beaches and 20 bays to choose from, it can be a little daunting to decide what spots to adventure to.

I have condensed it down to 5 of the best snorkel spots on Rottnest Island and why.

Parker Point

Let’s start with a firm favourite. Parker Point is one of the best snorkel spots to visit due to its 12 plaque trail along the reef leading to an epic drop off.

Follow the buoys along the reef and see manta rays, tropical fish and scary looking crayfish!

Parker Point is a protected marine sanctuary zone. Which helps to keep the underwater life healthy and thriving. The zone was put in place to protect the pocillopora (pink) coral reef.

Located on the South-East side of the island, it is a popular favourite amongst the crowds. But that is for a very good reason; Parker Point is gorgeous!

Girl in water with snorkel mask. Crystal clear water at Parker Point.

Little Salmon Bay

Little Salmon Bay is great for beginners as well as experienced snorkellers.

The 700 metre trail along the reef is marked by 10 buoys. With information boards along the way that explain the different underwater habitats you are gliding above.

Expect to see seagrass meadows, limestone formations and, pink hued coral. You will also see lots of tropical fish darting through these habitats. If you are lucky, you could also see octopus and eagle rays!

As Little Salmon Bay is located around the corner from Parker Point, it also falls into the Marine Sanctuary zone.

Henrietta Rocks

Another amazing snorkelling spot on the south side of Rottnest Island is Henrietta Rocks.

Underneath the waters of Henrietta Rocks, you will discover a shipwreck known as “the shark”. This shipwreck is metres from the shoreline, making it easily accessible to discover and explore.

This shipwreck was originally a hopper barge that came free from its mooring in Fremantle in 1938. The barge travelled all the way over to Rottnest Island, where it hit the reef and slowly sank.

The shark shipwreck is home to lots of different sea creatures.

The shipwreck makes for an exciting and historical snorkel spot.

Part of the shipwreck at Henrietta Rocks sticking out the water.

Little Armstrong

On the north side of Rottnest Island is Little Armstrong Bay.

This bay is covered by rocks, making it a more sheltered spot. The reef is in the shallows, making it easy to swim out, with deeper water further in for the more experienced snorkellers.

What makes Little Armstrong Bay’s snorkelling spot so special is that there is a chance to see species of sea life that cannot be found on any other part of the island.

You will be greeted by lots of colourful fish and a maze of seagrass to enjoy.

Because of the importance of this seagrass, it is also a Marine Sanctuary Zone.

Little Armstrong Bay in Rottnest island.

Little Parakeet

Little Parakeet Bay is around the corner from Little Armstrong Bay.

I am adding this bay to the best snorkelling spots in Rottnest because you will be able to see blue-scaled fish, starfish, and maybe even a friendly stingray!

As you swim further out of the bay, you will discover a long coral reef with lots of formations, making it a playground for the colourful and curious fish of the island.

If you feel more comfortable snorkelling with an organised tour then click here .

Visit Rottnest island bakery

I would start your day off right with a coffee and a sweet treat from Rottnest Island Bakery. They have a wide selection of pastries, pies, breakfast/lunch sandwiches and baked goods.

This little pit stop is in the heart of the Thomson bay settlement, which is a 10 minutes walk from the main jetty.

This will be where you first encounter the cute quokkas!

There are a few nice little shops in this area which you should definitely check out during your time here.

Get an Ice Cream at Kuld Creamery

Located at The Basin is a must visit ice cream van called Kuld Creamery.

This little ice cream chain started in Perth and is an absolute favourite amongst locals.

When I lived in Fremantle, I would visit their shop every Monday with the hostel gang.

Which means when we found out they had a Kuld ice cream van on Rottnest island, we had to visit.

They create epic tasting flavours like carrot cake, gingerbread spice with caramel, and vegan cookie dough made with either coconut or oat cream.

The Basin is the perfect backdrop to sit and enjoy your ice cream. Soak up the spectacular views and watch the cute Quokkas roaming.

Kuld Icecream cone in front of the ocean.

Explore The Basin

The Basin is the most popular beach on Rottnest Island. With its clear turquoise water, colourful reefs and soft white sand. This beach has to be on your Rottnest itinerary.

This is a great spot to cool off after cycling around the island.

Get a selfie with a Quokka.

Selfie with a Quokka.

Known as one of the happiest creatures on the planet and only located on Rottnest island, is the Quokka.

This smiley, cute creature has no predators and goes about its day roaming around the beautiful island.

The Quokka became famous when celebrities like Chris Hemsworth, Shawn Mendes and Roger Federer took iconic smiley selfies with them.

These sweet, small marsupials are really friendly, curious creatures and will approach you if you are patient.

We had one hop into our tent, which was quite a funny experience.

Remember not to touch them or feed them. However, saying that I had one, put its tiny paw on my leg and rubbed its little body on me and IT WAS THE SOFTEST!! They also liked the smell of my hair.

Here are some tips for getting a selfie with a Quokka without causing the animal distress.

1. Sit near the Quokka but not next to it. Give them space and let them come to you; they are curious creatures and will want to come over and smell you. Or you can get in a low crouching position and slowly move towards them.

2. I recommend having your phone in video mode so you can record and screen grab later in case the little one doesn’t want to stay for long.

3. Either have your phone to the side or upside down. In the side version, you will be able to get you both in the frame and the upside down version, you can get them smiling more.

4. The best time to get your picture is either early in the morning or early evening. I managed to get my interaction just before sunset.

Little Quokka smiling.

Visit Cathedral Rocks to see fur seals.

At the most western point of Rottnest Island is Cathedral Rocks. Here you will find a viewing platform specifically designed to watch the fur seals bask in the sun and chase and play with each other in the ocean.

You might also be lucky enough to spot dolphins and migrating whales!

The best sunset spot on Rottnest Island

If you chose the option to camp, then 5 minutes walk from your tent will be the beautiful Pinky’s Beach. This beach is also home to the Bathurst Lighthouse.

I recommend walking up to the base of Bathurst lighthouse with a picnic blanket, some drinks and Timtams and watching the sun set over the ocean. As you are above the beach, you also get a beautiful birdseye view.

Girls drinking alcoholic beverages and eating Timtams whilst watching the sunset at Rottnest.

Skydive over Rottnest Island

If you are feeling brave and want to skydive over this tropical oasis, then check out this tandem experience with Skydive Geronimo.

This 2.5 hour activity will have you jumping from 10,000, 14,000, or 15,000 feet with 30 to 66 seconds of free fall. For $347.90, it is a once in a lifetime experience.

Parasail over Rottnest Island

The company I used to work for; Cicerello Jet Adventures , has taken its parasailing boat over to Rottnest Island and now you can see the tropical blue water from above. This is a more affordable and less scary option to skydiving.

Jet Adventures also does whale watching parasailing which is an incredible experience!

Souvenir shop and wander around the boutique stores.

In the main settlement area, 10 minutes walk from the main jetty, are some lovely little local shops. Whether you want a soft toy quokka or a postcard, you are bound to find something that will commemorate your trip.

My friends brought me “ A Quokkas Guide to Happiness ” book for my birthday and I love it. A photographer called Alex Cearns paired adorable Quokka photographs with quotes from many talented gurus.

Get some drinks at Bayside Bar

Minutes from the jetty is also a nice outside seating bar called Bayside. This is the perfect location to people watch, gaze the ocean and take in the sites.

Prices are reasonable, and it has a really nice vibe to it.

ROTTNEST ISLAND, AUSTRALIA: COMPLETE GUIDE

This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. We may receive a small commission when you make a purchase using our link.

Rottnest Island is one of the must visit spots in all of Australia! A short ferry ride from nearby Perth, Rottnest is one of the most beautiful islands you will ever see.

I’ve been traveling around Australia for about five years now. These five years include explorations of local areas, streets, towns, beaches and venues; and also longer trips to the remote islands and wild national parks. While the major tourist crowd goes to Sydney to see Opera House, I prefer to take a chance to see other less popular places, to learn more about Australia, and its treasures.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about visiting Rottnest Island, including ferries, accommodation, and the adorable quokka!

HOW DO I GET THERE?

You can get to Rottnest by a fast boat ferry. It’s only 18 km away, which is 25 minutes from Fremantle, an Italian town in Perth, Western Australia. You can also take a ferry from Perth CBD.

I personally recommend visiting Fremantle and depart from the Shed B port location. It is much nicer in my opinion. You can plan your trip depending on your accommodation’s location and if you have some additional time to see Fremantle.

For an insider tip, you can get an additional coupon for 10-20% off in one of the free ‘Hello Perth’ guides. There will be a bar at the ferry station, where you can get some snacks, coffees or even a beer if you like.

WHAT MAKES ROTTNEST UNIQUE?

Rottnest Island is a wonderful wild island with only a few buildings like hotels, shop and a museum near the port where you arrive and then there is pretty much nothing apart from nature and wildness.

Whether you feel like relaxing at the spa and staying at the hotel or if you prefer riding a bike up and downhills to discover hidden beaches – you can be active or chill, depending on what you prefer to do. There are not only turquoise water and white sand that attracts visitors, but also unusual & funny local friendly animals that smile to you and love taking #quokkaselfies.

WHAT ARE QUOKKAS?

Quokkas are cute little wild animals between 2.5- 5 kilos, who can jump and carry their babies in the pouch like kangaroos. Moreover, unlike kangaroos, quokkas can also run and climb short trees.

The quokkas who live on Rottnest Island are used to people, and they are very friendly. They come very close and smile for the photos, but remember they are still wild animals and they have teeth, so make sure to be very respectful and careful.

The legend says, the Island received this name, because it’s visitors though this place was full of rats (but they were actually quokkas!) and they called it ‘rat’s nest’, which has become ‘Rottnest’.

WHAT IS THERE TO DO ON ROTTNEST ISLAND?

You can see lots of pretty places only in one day. There is a concentration of cool spots! That is why Rottnest needs to be in your bucket list.

One full day on Rottnest can be enough to see the main attractive spots and to meet the local wildlife. There are also a few hotels , so you can stay there for more than one night and have more time to relax and enjoy the island life.

WILDLIFE SPOTTING

Apart from taking selfies with quokkas, you will drive the bike around the island and visit stunning beaches with clear water. You can also see lots of other wildlife, sealife, and birds and, if you are lucky, spot a whale, dolphins, various birds, lizards and more. Make sure to take your portable battery; you may want to take lots of photos!

Ferry ticket to Rottnest Island usually includes a bike hire. There are no cars allowed on the Island, and main transport is a pushbike. Get ready to ride a lot and keep in mind the distance back, driving away from the port.

Get a map in the information center, because the phone reception may not be always good enough to load your Google Map.

If you are unable to drive the bike, but still would like to go around – no worries! There is also a bus service, which is cruising around a few bus stops.

VISIT A PINK LAKE!

The pink lake looks particularly good on the photos and will score you lots of likes for sure! There are a few pink lakes in Australia and one of those you can find on Rottnest.

ROTTNEST HISTORY

In the 19th century, the government sent convicts to the island and so they used it as a prison. Rottnest also has some military history and to know more about what was happening here you can visit the local museum near the port.

There are some big events, like music festivals, marathons, and more things are happening in the summertime on Rottnest. Be sure to check the official events calendar to see what is currently happening on the island!

SOME ADDITIONAL INFO

There are lots of uphill and downhill on the bike, so if you are going downhill, you will need to speed up, as there will be the way up afterward.

If you are into fishing, you can look for some fish, octopus and even lobsters. The best place to catch crayfish on the island is Rocky Bay. There are also normally fewer people, so it’s a secret spot – do not tell anyone!

MY PERSONAL TOP TRAVEL TIPS FOR VISITING ROTTNEST ISLAND

  • Plan your trip to Rottnest Island on Tuesday; it is a half price ticket day ($60 instead of $120).
  • Take plenty of water. There are not many refill stations in the middle of the island, and you will be very thirsty, driving the bike.
  • Bring a sandwich and some snacks. There are no shops or restaurants as soon as you leave the port area.
  • Thoughtfully apply and re-apply sunscreen on your hands, neck, knees, and feet. 99% of people on the Ferry back from Rottnest have these spots sunburned.
  • Do not feed quokka with human food. They love eating leaves, and human food causes health issues for them.
  • The Pink Lake may look different in your photographs, and it can be not pink enough on the photos. It often looks much better in real life than on the images. There is a solution! Use the Lightroom app to bring the pink color saturation and luminance up to enhance the pink color.
  • Bring a snorkel and watch an incredible underwater world.
  • Bring a backpack instead of a shoulder bag. It will make driving much more manageable! Bring a piece of rope to tight your belongings to the bike. You never know when you may need it!

NEARBY PLACES TO VISIT

There are many cool islands in Australia you should consider visiting. Just name a few: Rottnest, Fraser, Stradbroke, Whitsundays , Penguin Island, Kangaroo Island, Tasmania – you can find an adventure for your own taste and depending on your preferred location to experience the island babe’s life!

Western Australia has a lot to explore. Even though it is closer to Europe and the rest of the world than the Australian East Coast with Sydney and Melbourne, it remains less popular and more undiscovered. If you plan a trip to Australia, I would like to encourage you to visit the Western Part.

Rottnest Island is definitely worth a visit and it is a magnificent place you will remember all your life.

Meet the quokkas: the perfect day trip to Rottnest Island

Planning a day trip to Rottnest Island? A visit to ‘Rotto’ is one of the top things to do in Perth. There’s beautiful, peaceful beaches to explore and of course, the chance to see the world’s happiest marsupial up close.

Discover how to plan a fantastic trip and make the most of your time on this unique island.

A quokka on Rottnest Island in Western Australia. Discover everything you need to know for the perfect day trip to Rottnest Island.

Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) is a small island off the coast of Western Australia. It’s known for its beautiful beaches, scenic swimming spots and its population of quokkas.

If you’re like quokka, wut? – You can’t have been spending much time on the internet for the last few years.

These adorable marsupials are endemic to Western Australia and are mostly found on Rottnest Island and Bald Island near Albury, although there are a few colonies living on the mainland between that regional city and Perth.

Quokkas became Internet-famous due to the shape of their mouths – when they angle their faces a certain way, they look like they are quite simply, beaming.

This has earned them the nickname of “the happiest animal on the planet”.

You can see these cute critters on a day trip to Rottness Island – although they’re not the only reason to visit this gorgeous stretch of land .

Rottnest Island is easily accessible by ferry from several ports in Perth.

Read on to discover everything you need to know to plan the perth-fect Rottnest Island day trip. And here’s a Perth itinerary you can use, to plan your time in the WA capital.

This post forms part of my guide to Perth and Western Australia. Discover 30+ fun things to do in Perth and check out these weird facts about the city and state . For something truly special, plan a road trip from Perth to Kalbarri , to explore seaside towns, national parks and a pink lake.

How to have a fabulous day trip to Rottnest Island

First, some background.

Wadjemup’s traditional owners are the Whadjuk Noongar people . The name means ‘place across the water where the spirits are’.

Around 6000-7000 years ago, Wadjemup was connected to the mainland. It was considered an important meeting place and ceremonial site.

Like many parts of the country, post-colonial Wadjemup has a sad history, having been used as an Aboriginal prison. It wasn’t until the 20th century that it began to be seen as a place for recreation.

The earliest ‘discovery’ of the island by Europeans is believed to have been by the Dutch in the 17th century. William de Vlamingh gave the island its name, due to the abundance of quokkas – with them being endemic to Western Australia and so, unknown to Europeans, he mistook them for rats.

For more about Rottnest Island’s varied history, visit the Wadjemup Museum .

When is the best time to visit Rottnest Island?

Summer in Perth is long, stretching from November to March. This is when the island is at its busiest.

March is my favourite time to visit Rottnest Island (and Perth in general). It’s past peak tourist season and the temperatures are still lovely.

I recommend avoiding the island from mid-November to early December. It’s a popular destination for school leavers celebrating the end of exams – ‘Schoolies week’ is what we call it in Australia.

Unless you want to be sharing the space with drunk 18 year olds (and ah, realistically 17 year olds), don’t plan your trip for then.

Rotto can also get busy on Western Australian school and public holidays (some of which differ to other parts of the countries).

The island is also best avoided during the Rottnest Channel Swim (late February) and Port to Pub (March) – unless taking part in these events is of interest to you!

Outside of the holidays and Schoolies, Rottnest is great to visit any time of the year. Winters are cold, so the beaches may not be all that warm (and some facilities unavailable), but it’ll be much quieter.

Swings and roundabouts. Personally, I think winter in Australia is tops .

If you are visiting in peak season (summer), try to plan a midweek visit , to avoid the weekend crowds.

How to get to Rottnest Island

Getting to Rottnest Island is really easy. You can travel by boat, ferry, or air .

I recommend catching a ferry, as the least expensive option (which in itself, is not exactly cheap).

Ferries depart from Perth City, North Fremantle (Rous Head), Fremantle (Victoria Quay) and Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth’s north. It’s a 25 minute trip from Fremantle and 45 minutes from Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Three operators currently service this route:

  • Rottnest Express , who leave from Fremantle and Perth CBD
  • Rottnest Fast Ferries depart from Hillarys Boat Harbour Ferry Terminal
  • SeaLink Rottnest Island run routes from Fremantle and Perth CBD.

I highly recommend grabbing a ticket in advance, especially in peak summer season.

If you’re keen to see Rotto from the air, you can choose to arrive by seaplane.

Rottnest Air Taxi provide round trips for $105 each way (you could break it up by catching a seaplane there one way and the ferry back, or vice versa).

If you’ve got your sealegs, there’s also the option to charter your own boat and sail to the island.

To step foot on Rotto, you must pay an admission fee. This funds conservation efforts on the island and the upkeep of facilities.

If you arrive by ferry or commercial vessel, the fee is included in your fare.

Those travelling to Rotto by their own means will have to pay the fee online before arrival .

➳ Rottnest Island seafood cruise

Getting around Rottnest Island

There’s hardly any cars on Rotto. And despite it being a small island, you won’t cover a heap of ground by foot.

Bikes or Ebikes are your best option. You can book your bikes online and pick them up from Pedal and Flipper .

It’s also possible to hire them on the day. The shop has over 1,890 bikes, so they will have you covered. You can also order snorkelling gear from Pedal and Flipper.

Hire cost for a standard adult bike is $30 a day. Electric bikes can be hired for $71 a day, although they require a security deposit of $200. This is refundable upon return.

Remember to always wear a helmet – it’s a legal requirement in Australia. See other travel tips for Oz .

If bikes aren’t your thing, book onto a Segway Tour of the island .

Another option is the Island Explorer Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus .

As the name suggests, you can use this bus to jump on and off particular points in the island.

The bus operates from 8.30am–3pm at 30 minute intervals.

Tickets start from $25 and can be bought in advance online, or from the Visitor Centre on the day.

Looking across the island to Wadjemup Lighthouse, the main lighthouse and a Rottnest Island attraction. The lighthouse can be reached by bike or bus during a day trip to Rottnest Island.

How long should you spend on Rottnest Island?

It’s really up to you. You can get a lot out of a day trip to Rottnest Island, covering a fair bit by bike or bus.

I recommend catching a morning ferry from Fremantle. They leave as early as 7.30am.

With the last ferry leaving at 6.30pm, it’ll give you plenty of time to explore the island on a day trip.

Keen to stay on? The island is well serviced, so there’s accommodation available – although as this is a popular weekend getaway from Perth, I recommend booking well in advance. Check out what’s on offer before you visit .

An advantage of this is being able to head out to the beach early in the morning, avoiding the crowds!

Signs at the General Store indicating no quokkas allowed inside.

What do you need to bring to Rottnest Island?

If you’re going on a day trip to Rottnest Island, I recommend bringing:

  • a comfortable backpack
  • a beach towel
  • change of clothes
  • joggers, runners or sandals
  • non-toxic sunscreen
  • reusable water bottle

Things to do during your day trip to Rottnest Island

Once you’ve arrived on the island, there’s plenty to do to keep you busy.

Cycle around, dip into the beaches, go for a snorkel and check out the local sights.

Here’s what you can cover on a day trip to Rottnest Island.

A woman poses next to a quokka.

1. Meet the quokkas

I mean, this is mostly why you’re here, right? These cute little critters are international superstars for a reason.

There’s stacks of these marsupials on the island and they’re particularly abundant in the mid-to-late afternoon.

If you do choose to visit in autumn or winter (March to August), you may see young joeys hanging about in their mother’s pouches. Eek!

Please remember that quokkas are wild animals, so don’t try to pat them , as cuddly as they look, and do not feed them .

2. Jump on a free guided walking tour

Get your bearings during a day trip to Rottnest Island, on a guided tour led by knowledgeable volunteers.

There’s a range of tours on offer .

You can stroll through the historic settlement, hear about shipwrecks in the surrounding reef or jump on a tour dedicated solely to quokkas.

Interested? Head to the RVGA Information Booth at 2 Henderson Avenue for more information once you reach the island.

3. Follow the trail along Wadjemup Bidi

If you’re interested in exploring Wadjemup on foot but are keen to go it alone, tackle a walking trail along the Wadjemup Bidi .

This 45 kilometre long track is made up of five sections of varying lengths.

There’s important cultural and environmental landmarks to see, coupled with the island’s naturally beautiful scenery.

A blue bike parked by a wooden fence in front of the shoreline of Rottnest Island. A top thing to do on a day trip to Rottnest Island is hire a bike and ride around.

4. Cycle around the island

Or stick to the time-honoured way of experiencing Rottnest – via two wheels.

Once you’ve grabbed your hire bike, hit the road and get exploring.

The further you go out from the main hub of the island, the more sparsely populated the beaches will be.

It’s a really nice way to spend a day trip to Rottnest Island. You pedal around, deciding where to stop, which beach looks the most appealing.

Then, you park your bike, hit the waves and cool off. Jump back on and off you go.

One of Rottnest Island's many secluded bays.

5. Relax at the beach

This island has some of the most beautiful beaches and bays in Western Australia – to be honest, probably Australia in general.

There are 63 beaches and 20 bays to pick from, so you won’t have a shortage of spots to explore.

The Basin is the most popular swimming spot, being only 10 minutes from the main settlement area.

Make sure you do your bit to keep these pristine beaches beautiful. Leave no trace and take nothing with you.

Read up on our tips for beach safety in Australia before getting into the water.

Looking out across the clear blue waters of Rottnest, where a person is snorkelling.

6. Go snorkelling

Rottnest Island’s sheltered bays and clear waters are perfect for snorkelling. There’s fish, friendly rays, colourful coral and even a shipwreck to explore.

The Basin, Parakeet Bay and Little Armstrong Bay are the most popular places to snorkel. However, you can cycle between scenic swimming spots until you find one that works for you.

Parker Point and Little Salmon Bay have dedicated snorkel trains, which have information panels attached to the seabed, below the surface. Interactive learning at its best!

A secluded bay on Rottnest Island.

7. Skydive over Rottnest Island

Or ditch land and sea for air, to jump out of a plane and tandem skydive over the island.

I can’t think of a more picturesque setting to skydive – and Australia has quite a few contenders.

And as mentioned previously, you can take a joyride on a seaplane for a less terrifying aerial perspective of the island.

A quokka scavenges for scraps outside a cafe on Rottnest Island.

Where to eat on Rottnest Island

There are plenty of places to secure a feed or drink on Rottnest Island.

Grab a coffee on arrival from The Lane Cafe . Alternatively pick up a pie, sausage roll or sweet treat from Rottnest Bakery .

Opt for sourdough pizza at Frankie’s on Rotto or order plates of Southeast Asian-inspired cuisine at Lontara .

If you’re decided against a day trip to Rottnest Island, grab a cocktail from Pinky’s and take in the probably glorious sunset.

Essentials can be bought at Rottnest General Store .

Should you book on a guided tour to Rottnest Island?

By all means, book onto a guided tour if that’s how you like to roll. However, I don’t really think it’s necessary.

Getting there is pretty straightforward and you can see most of Rottnest Island’s attractions via bike or the bus.

The only reason I’d do a tour is if I wanted an added extra, like a cruise, delicious seafood lunch or jaunt in a seaplane.

I do recommend booking your ferry ticket in advance , especially during the busier warmer months and definitely if you’re heading there on a weekend.

And if you want to extend your day trip, check out accommodation options on Rottnest Island or stay locally in Perth .

If you’ve got the gear and are on a budget, consider camping on the island as a low impact option. Or go for a glamp in an eco-tent at Discovery Rottnest Island .

If you’re short on time, a day trip to Rottnest Island will allow you to see many of the island’s main attractions. Of course, you can always choose to stay a little longer (particularly if you’re there midweek or off-season) to soak up what this gorgeous island has to offer.

Though there are frequent ferries to Rottnest, I highly advise booking the Rottnest Island ferry way in advance or at least a month in advance to get your desired date and time of booking as they fill out really fast. 2. If you have luggage to check-in, reach the ferry terminal in advance. The ferries depart right on time and it’s highly unlikely, they will wait for anyone. 3. If you have your own bike then you can take it with you on the ferry to save money or else you can hire the bike from Pedal and Flippers. It costs $15 AUD to BYO Bike. 4. To save some money and time, I recommend booking a combo of ferry rides and bike hire . 5. If you are prone to seasickness like me, keep your medicine handy as the ferry ride can be bumpy.

Fremantle to Rottnest Island

A day trip to Rottnest Island from Fremantle is the easiest and most convenient as you can take a direct ferry from Fremantle that takes approximately 25 minutes. Take the nearest train station to Fremantle from where you are staying and walk for around 10 mins to reach the ferry terminal.

Fremantle to Rottnest Island ferries leaves from the B-Shed at Victoria Quay or Rous Heads in North Fremantle (North Port). The B-Shed is located behind the Fremantle Train station is the nearest if you are coming to Fremantle via train. If you have your own car and looking to park then the ferry terminal at Rous Head has cheaper parking and a secure car park than B-Shed.

Google Location: B-Shed Terminal and North Port Terminal .

Perth to Rottnest Island

If you are staying in Perth city but don’t want the hassle of taking a train to Fremantle, then the ferry to Rottnest Island from Perth departs only once a day from Perth’s Barrack Street Jetty and takes around 90 mins as it’s a double cruise. The first ferry takes you from Perth to Fremantle cruising along the swan river and the second one takes you to Rottnest. You can also add complimentary hotel transfers to your booking.

Google Location: Barrack Street Jetty

Hillarys to Rottnest Island

If you are planning on doing the Rottnest Island Day Trip from Hillarys , the ferries depart from Hillarys Boat Harbour and take approximately 45 minutes. If you are staying in the northern suburbs of Perth then departing from Hillarys is a good option otherwise it is expensive than departing from Fremantle. Also, the ferries depart only 2-3 times a day from Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Air services to Rottnest

Reaching Rottnest by air is an expensive way but it can also be a lifetime experience. Flights are available with  Rottnest Air Taxi ,  Ozwest Aviation ,  Swan River Seaplanes , and  Rotorvation .

How Much Does a Day Trip To Rottnest Island Cost?

The fares and the luggage information are different for each ferry operator so make sure you do your research well in choosing a ferry that is best for you. You can also find some Rottnest Island ferry deals on the respective ferry websites. Here are the ferry options along with the link to see the timetable and do the online bookings.

1. Sealink Rottnest The earliest ferry of Sealink Rottnest departs at 7:00 am from B-shed Fremantle & the last of their ferry from Rottnest is at around 8:00 pm so make sure you are there on time. Check the ferry ticket to Rottnest Island and the prices here.

2. Rottnest Express They start their departure from B-shed Fremantle at 7:30 am & from Northport Fremantle at 8:00 am. Their last service is at 18:30 from Rottnest to Northport Fremantle or to B-shed Fremantle. BOOK HERE.

3. Rottnest Fast Ferries Their service starts at 7:30 am from Hillary’s boat harbor & their last ferry from Rottnest is at 18:15. BOOK HERE.

Overall, I find Sealink Rottnest to be the best in terms of prices. It costs around $70 AUD pp for adults & $32 for kids (infants ride for free) for the ticket fare including the island admission fee and $3 AUD for luggage. It is also worth checking the Telethon saver fares on Rottnest Express as if the deal is running then this will be the cheapest way to get to Rottnest Island.

How to Get Around Rottnest Island?

As the island is a car-free zone so basically there are only 3 options to get around- Cycling, walking on foot, or taking an Island Explorer bus which is like a hop-on/hop-off bus.

Rottnest Island Bike Hire

Upon arrival, the first and foremost thing to do is to hire a bike if you aren’t bringing your own. There is also an option of booking a bike from your ferry operator while booking the ferry but I wouldn’t recommend it as the quality of the bike is usually not good. The other option is to book online through Pedal & Flippers.

Pedals & Flippers is the largest bike hire facility with over 1650 bikes to hire that come with all the necessary pieces of equipment too. The smartest way is to book the bikes online so that you don’t have to waste your time standing in queues. Upon arriving, choose the cycle & helmet from them & be ready to explore.

It costs around 30AUD to hire a bike per day and for multi-day hire, the prices depend on the number of days and time the bike is being hired.

Island Explorer Bus

For those who don’t want to cycle around and want to see more during less time, the Island Explorer bus is a perfect choice. It’s a hop-on-hop-off bus and lets you take breathtaking views of the whole island. The driver will provide all the necessary information about the places and the views that you will be passing by.

The tickets cost Adult $20, concession/child $15, family (2 adults and 2 children) $50, extra child $5. The Island Explorer bus runs daily from 9 am to 3 pm at 45-minute intervals. You can get your tickets online or can purchase them from the Visitor Centre or Main Bus Stop ticket kiosk. Keep the map handy to know where to get off when you take the explorer bus. You can grab your map or guide from the visitor center upon arrival.

Other Bus Tours

There are a few other Bus Tours options but they don’t give you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. You can see and book the other tours from here .

Rottnest Island Day Trip Itinerary

1. thomson bay.

Take the first ferry to Rottnest Island that will leave you at Thomson Bay which is the main settlement. It’s where you can have your breakfast before picking up your bike or taking the island explorer bus to explore Rottnest Island. You will also find the cutest little marsupials, Quokka’s near Thomson Bay if you want to have that mandatory Quokka selfie. I would also recommend packing the lunch for later.

Some key points (important tips) to remember before taking the Quokka selfie: ✦ Stay away from the Quokkas at a safe distance while you use the selfie stick to click the picture. ✦ The best way is to sit on the ground or to lay on the ground while taking a picture. ✦ Do not touch or feed them in order to make them look at you or into the camera.

2. The Basin

Take your bike and leave for the first scenic spot of the day, the Basin. An Island day without beach hopping is just impossible and with 63 beaches as an option, you are really spoilt for choice. There are many beautiful beaches on Rottnest Island and the basin is the most popular and safest one.

The Basin, also known as the mermaid pool is located in the northwest of the island, between Pinky Beach and Longreach Bay. With beautiful clear water, it’s like a shallow pool until some distance making it safe for kids to jump in and play in the water. The presence of lifeguards makes this beach even safer for everyone. Hence, it’s the favorite & most popular swimming spot for the people coming to Rottnest.

Facilities: Basin also happens to have a shower facility which is not common at the beaches on the island. There are very limited bays or beaches that have shower facilities.

3. Parker Point

You may want to take the island explorer bus for this if you don’t want to ride the bike. Get down at Stop 5, Parker Point and you will see a beautiful view of the bay. The array of blues look stunning when you get down the stairs to access the white sandy beach.

With the diversity of marine life present here, Parker Point is an ideal location for every kind of recreational activity like snorkeling, swimming, and scuba diving. It even has a marine Snorkel Trail to have a look at the fishes and flora.

4. Little Salmon Bay & Salmon Bay

A bit far from the main settlement area, Little Salmon Bay and Salmon Bay are the 2 bay’s next to each other (stop 6 and 7). Little Salmon Bay is a small secluded spot that is well protected from the winds that makes it a perfect spot to have some time in the water. It is even the best spot for snorkeling. It can get a little crowded as it’s small but the clear turquoise water will make you fall in love, making it worth spending an hour or two. A day trip to Rottnest Island is incomplete without visiting little salmon bay.

Next to Little Salmon Bay, there is a bigger version of it called Salmon Bay. There is a small seating area with shade where you can have a little picnic or save yourself from the scorching sun. The water is crystal clear and the sea is a beautiful color.

The view of Salmon Bay

5. Visit the Wadjemup Lighthouse

Wadjemup lighthouse is located in the center of the island and is the 8th stop of the island explorer bus. From the bus stop to the lighthouse, the walk is around 10 mins and while walking towards the lighthouse, you will meet several quokkas in the bushes.

Wadjemup Lighthouse is a 38.7-meter white color working lighthouse that has a lot of history and offers a breathtaking 360° panoramic view of the island & Indian Ocean if you climb its 155 steps. It’s also the fourth tallest lighthouse in Australia. You can take a tour of the lighthouse for $9 p, the tours operate every day between 10 am – 2.30 pm.

There’s a little food truck at the bottom which sells ice creams and coffees and you can sit on one of the deckchairs here and enjoy the view out over the island.

6. West End

Saved the best for the last, West End is the extreme west point of the island and the 11th stop. It comprises 3 main points – Cape Vlamingh, Fishhook Bay, and NZ Colony of Fur Seals. Cape Vlamingh is a spectacular spot & acts as a blowhole when a large wave breaks through it. Follow the Boardwalk to the edge of the cliff to see the beautiful divine ocean.

Fish Hook Bay is on the left side of Cape Vlamingh blow holes & is a scenic vantage point. The turquoise & many shades of blue along with a crowd of limestone cliffs looks spectacular. NZ colony for fur seals is at walking distance (Beware of the snakes & skinks). Use the binoculars that are there to spot the seals. Sometimes you may be able to spot dolphins and whales too. I spotted a baby whale lying in the water while a baby dolphin playing all by herself.

The view of fishhook bay in Rottnest Island australia

If you still have time left then do a whole loop with the island explorer bus without getting off anywhere. This way you get to see and learn more about Rottnest Island but if you are running out of time, take the bus back to the main settlement and take a leisurely walk around Thomson Bay before boarding your ferry back to Perth/Fremantle.

Best Rottnest Island Tours

If tours are your thing and you are more comfortable with them rather than exploring on your own then these 3 are the best Rottnest Island tours from Perth or Fremantle that include round trip ferry fare and admission fee.

How Long to Spend on Rottnest Island?

As a local, I recommend spending at least 8 hrs if you are planning a day trip to Rottnest Island from Perth. I can vouch that during this time you will be able to see and do a lot of things on Rottnest Island that will guarantee a good time.

But it’s no fun to go from one spot to another just for the sake of seeing the whole island so if you can spare a day or 2 more, then an extended stay is definitely the best idea. It would be the perfect duration to see so many places along with some rest and not being on the go all the time.

The Island looks small but it isn’t. There are 63 beaches and 20 bays to explore and when there is so much beauty around then why hurry. Take some time to enjoy the beaches and cycle around to soak in the beauty. But in case you are really tight on time, you can see the best of what this island has to offer on a day trip too.

Best Time to Visit Rottnest Island

The weather in Rottnest Island is good all the time except for winters. The months of May to August are rainy, chilly, and windy. March-April and September-October are transitional months so it’s tricky to predict the weather at these times.

Though Rottnest Island in winter will offer you good deals on hotels and ferry tickets, the best time to visit Rottnest is anywhere from November to February, in summers. Particularly, the months of December and January are the best months as the water will be perfect to swim and the days will be sunny.

TRAVEL TIP: I recommend visiting Rottnest Island during a weekday as there is a high chance that you may be able to score a good deal on the ferry tickets and some deals on accommodation. Also, avoid a trip to Rottnest Island during school holidays as Rotto is a popular and beloved place to visit for us locals.

Where to Eat on Rottnest Island

There are many bakeries, cafes, and restaurants in Rottnest Islands so there is no shortage of places to eat. Mostly all of them are located within the main settlement or nearby except for Kalli’s on Rotto that is located at Wadjemup lighthouse and Lexi’s on Rotto located at West End. There are also 2 shops (general stores) on Rottnest island from where you can buy the groceries or drinks. Both of them are located in the main settlement area.

Cafes at Thomson Bay – Dome, Subway, and The Lane Cafe.

Cafe at Geordie Bay – Geordies Cafe & Art Gallery

Bakeries at Thomson Bay – Rottnest Bakery & Simmos Rottnest near Rottnest Island visitor center.

There are a few options to choose from when it comes to restaurants and bars. Click here to check.

Rottnest Island Accommodation

Since it’s a day trip to Rottnest Island you will not need accommodation but in case you plan an extended trip, staying at Rottnest Island can be a unique experience as there is a wide range of accommodation options. This includes standard holiday units, campgrounds, Hotel Rottnest, Karma Rottnest, Discovery glamping resort, and the newly opened Samphire Resort.

The most affordable option is camping on Rottnest Island but if you prefer your own home like Airbnb, the holiday units are self-contained and fully equipped with all the necessary facilities and are located in South Thomson’s Bay and Bathurst. For luxury lovers, the best place to stay on Rottnest Island would be Samphire Resort or glamping at Discovery Rottnest Island.

All types of accommodation can be found here and can be booked through the same link. It’s hard to get bookings during peak seasons or holiday seasons so I suggest booking well in advance. Some of the accommodations can be booked around 18 months in advance.

What to Pack for a Rottnest Island Day Trip?

Whether you are coming on a day trip to Rottnest or staying for a night or two, you should have some essentials with you all the time while visiting the island.

1. The most important is a big water bottle as water is not available everywhere on this island. It’s mainly available near the main settlement areas.

2. Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit, of course, a towel and a lot of reef-safe sunscreen in order to protect our corals from the chemicals found in daily sunscreens which can kill coral and damage coral reefs.

3. Pack some light clothes and snacks to munch as food is also not available everywhere.

4. With clear turquoise water, Snorkeling at Rottnest Island is pure bliss. If you have your own snorkeling kit then bring it along otherwise you can hire it at the island from Pedal and Flippers.

5. A selfie stick because we don’t want to miss out on taking the best smiling “Quokka Selfie”.

6. Lastly, a very important thing that you should absolutely not forget is a fly and mosquito repellant spray.

Final Thoughts

Is rottnest island worth visiting.

Yes, it is absolutely worth taking a day trip to Rottnest Island or even more. I hope this Rottnest Island guide motivates you to visit the Island. Apparently, most people who visit Australia only visit the east side (majorly Sydney) and don’t think about Western Australia as a tourist destination. However, WA is a total gem and Rottnest Island is a paradise here.

A trip to Rottnest Island is all about turquoise water, white sand beaches, and laid-back vibes so whether it’s a day trip or an extended stay, I highly recommend visiting Rottnest Island.

Happy Travels!
