8/2/2/22 @ 11:00 M1 southbound j15 delays due to Broken down lorry

M1 south – J27 – J26 – traffic at a standstill

What are the predictions for transport between Nottingham and Leeds tomorrow [Nov 13 2021] ? I am travelling by National Express, the coach is supposed to leave Notts at 3 15 and arrive in Leeds at 5 45, and the concert I’m attending starts [as in band onstage] at 7pm. I need to make sure I’m not going to be delayed.

Why is the page still displaying only 90 mins delays on M1 Jnc 14-15 ? We have been stuck for 2.5 hours and need to know how long we will be stuck so we make decisions on hotel booking. Thanks

Sorry but not a live travel report but was involved in an incident on the M1 at 1900 hrs on the 3rd October when Southern Motorway was closed before Junction 28 to remove debris causing damage to several cars. I would really appreciate if I could get a report from your good selves on this as it appeared on your website. My insurance company requires this info. Many thanks in anticipation. John Salmon

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M1

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M1 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M1 will be reinstated shortly.

Live eclipse traffic: Heavy traffic building in central Ohio as travelers return south

Traffic along north and west Columbus remains heavy at 6 p.m. Monday as motorists make their way home from viewing the solar eclipse.

The heaviest traffic is U.S. 33 eastbound between Dublin and Marysville, and there are backups along southbound Interstate 71 north of Columbus and on I-70 west of the city, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

Here's what to know as travelers return following the eclipse:

Live traffic updates: traffic building, crash on U.S. 33 as travelers return south

The slowest travel at 6 p.m. is U.S. 33 between Marysville and Dublin as travelers make their way back to Columbus following the eclipse, according to ODOT.

A crash that blocked an eastbound lane of U.S. 33 in Marysville also was slowing traffic.

Travelers can expect up to a 30-minute delay between Marysville and Dublin along 33, according to ODOT.

Traffic is heavy elsewhere in the region, including the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 west of Columbus and the southbound lanes of I-71 north of I-270. Both areas reported 10-minute delays.

Separately, a disabled vehicle caused backups in the eastbound lanes of I-270 on the South Side, causing delays of about 15 minutes.

There was also a crash that closed the shoulders on I-270 south of Roberts Road that slowed traffic.

ODOT to eclipse travelers: Brace for slow return home

While the pace of traffic to the eclipse has been slow to build, ODOT spokesperson Matt Bruning urged people to prepare for a long return time as everyone who headed to the path of totality tries to get home.

“Patience will be key for sure, if you can stay put the longer you can after the event the easier it will be,” Bruning said. “History is a teacher, and it teaches that is not what happens, everyone leaves and wants to get home at the same time.”

North central Ohio saw slowdowns on routes to eclipse

In addition to heavy traffic on U.S. 33, ODOT's traffic cameras also showed heavy traffic on Ohio 315 near the Franklin-Delaware County line and the Ohio 315 and U.S. 23 interchange. The two left lanes of I-270 west were also closed at State Route 315 south due to a crash.

Traffic along Interstate 71 in Delaware County was also heavy near Alum Creek State Park.

Roadways in Powell near the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium were also seeing increased traffic and slowdowns.

On the East Side of Columbus, a ramp from Interstate 670 to U.S. 62 was closed in both directions due to a crash, but is now reopened.

The ODOT OHGO website has live traffic updates, as well as access to dozens of traffic cameras throughout the state to make informed traveling decisions before heading out.

Bruning also said to be mindful of ODOT and state law enforcement workers, and said it was not legal for drivers to stop on the highway to watch the eclipse.

Traffic delays and other issues mark total solar eclipse day

Authorities on Monday reported traffic crashes and significant road delays across the country as thousands of people flocked to prime locations to gaze up at the rare solar eclipse – and then made their way home again.

Local roads and highways in states including Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Vermont and New Hampshire were impacted by the flood of drivers, many of whom were from out of state. The most intense bottlenecks appeared to be in the path of totality , a vast swath of the country – approximately 115 miles wide, crossing through 13 states – where people were able to view the total eclipse.

Traffic slowed on major highways in Indiana as the eclipse progressed Monday afternoon. State transportation officials posted video showing backups forming on Interstate 65 headed toward Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reported. The Courier & Press in Evansville reported delays after the eclipse ended.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine posted on X that traffic on state highways was flowing but rest stops along interstates in the path of totality are at or near capacity. 

Perrine said transportation officials planned to shut them down "once they are full and will not allow any more traffic in for the duration of the eclipse." One rest stop along I-74 near Veedersburg, northwest of Indianapolis, closed because it had reached maximum capacity from "eclipse viewing traffic." 

In Oklahoma, a crash around 7:30 a.m. local time narrowed eastbound lanes on I-40, a major transcontinental highway that runs from California to North Carolina. The crash occurred not far from several state parks that were hosting eclipse events, and was within driving distance of the full eclipse path, which included parts of southeastern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

"Crews estimate cleanup will take the majority of the day. Expect delays in the area and use extra caution. #trucking #eclipse," said a post on X by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation .

Multiple crashes were reported in Waco, Texas, a city in the path of totality, which hosted several festivities and eclipse viewing events. The crashes all occurred on I-35, which runs from southern Texas to Minnesota. The wrecks shut down multiple lanes.

"Expect major traffic delays in this area," the Texas Department of Transportation said in a statement around 9 a.m. local time.

Officials warn drivers of delays, dangers ahead of solar eclipse

In the weeks leading up to the celestial event, officials issued warnings about heavy traffic congestion and the danger of driving during the eclipse , including distracted pedestrians and the sudden change in light conditions. Eclipses have previously been tied with surges in traffic crashes, including fatal collisions.

In New York, extra troopers were staged throughout the entire state, especially in northern counties and cities, such as Buffalo, from which spectators can see a full eclipse, according to the New York State Police .

In Ohio, the state's Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission heavily staffed its toll booths, service plazas and maintenance buildings in anticipation of the eclipse, which it has designated as "a high-volume traffic event" like, for example, Thanksgiving.  The Ohio Emergency Management Agency estimates, for the solar eclipse, between 150,000 and 575,000 travelers will visit the state, which encompasses areas in the path of totality.

During the 2017 eclipse, congestion in some areas lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication. An analysis of traffic patterns from that year suggests the worst of the traffic – on interstates and rural back roads alike – will kick off after the eclipse ends and everyone tries to leave all at once.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Here’s the latest on traffic:

7 p.m. update: Traffic is flowing again in Syracuse after Monday afternoon’s solar eclipse.

There is still congestion showing on Interstate 81 South in Tully and Cortland. Other highways, including the Thruway, appear to be clear, according to 511NY.

6:15 p.m. update: Vehicles were beginning to pick up speed on parts of Interstate 81 South in Syracuse. Traffic was still delayed between Exit 22 (Hiawatha Boulevard) and Exit 18 (Almond Street).

5:45 p.m. update: Traffic remained clogged on southbound Interstate 81 between between Exit 25 (7th North Street) and Exit 16 (Nedrow). There were also patches of backups south of Syracuse in LaFayette and Tully.

South Salina Street appeared backed up on Syracuse’s South Side from West Kennedy Street to the ramp to Interstate 81 near West Calthrop Avenue.

Vehicles were moving quickly on the Thruway and Onondaga Lake Parkway.

5 p.m. update: Interstate 81 South was moving very slowly, sometimes stopping, between Exit 25 (7th North Street) and Exit 16 (Nedrow). Interstate 690 was moving at slow speeds on either side of the Interstate 81 interchange.

South Salina Street was backed up on Syracuse’s South Side near Brighton Avenue.

Traffic continued to move slowly on southbound Interstate 81 between Exit 31 (Brewerton) and Exit 29 (Interstate 481) after an earlier crash.

The Thruway and Onondaga Lake Parkway were busy too.

4:30 p.m. update: A crash was blocking the right lane on southbound Interstate 81 at the Interstate 481 interchange in Cicero.

Interstate 81 South was moving very slowly, sometimes stopping, between Exit 25 (7th North Street) and Exit 16 (Nedrow).

State Route 13 was backed up in Sylvan Beach, along the eastern shore of Oneida Lake.

4 p.m. update: Interstate 81 South was crawling between Exit 22 (Hiawatha Boulevard) and Exit 18 (Almond Street). Interstate 690 East was moving at slow speeds between Exit 10 (Geddes Street) and the Interstate 81 interchange.

The Thruway and other parts of Interstate 690 were busy but not showing backups. Onondaga Lake Parkway was busy too.

Traffic was also building up on Bridge Street and other roads in downtown Oswego, and on State Route 481 South heading into Fulton.

There were also delays coming out of the Adirondacks. Backups were forming on southbound State Route 12 in Boonville, and southbound State Route 28 in Old Forge.

Solar eclipse traffic updates: I-74 backed up as solar eclipse viewers head home

Update 5:35 p.m. While the Indiana Department of Transportation reported no incidents on eastbound Interstate 74, Waze app users reported heavy traffic leaving Indianapolis, and stop-and-go traffic eastbound from west of Batesville. The Ohio Department of Transportation was reporting a 13-minute delay from the state line east toward Cincinnati.

Update 5 p.m.: Travel delays remain on Interstate 74 according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

• 11-minute delay on eastbound I-75 for about 2 miles east of the Indiana border.

Update 4:30 p.m.: Traffic home this afternoon from eclipse viewing is just as tangled as it was this morning when sightseers started their treks.

Travel delays remain on Interstate 74 and 75, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

• 20-minute delay on I-75 southbound.
• 11-minute delay on eastbound I-75.

Update 3:20 p.m. : The Ohio Department of Transportation is reporting no traffic delays at this time.

Update 2 p.m. : Travel delays remain on Interstate 275, 74 and 75, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

• 10-minute delay on I-75 near the Norwood Lateral.
• 12-minute delay on I-74 in the area of Cheviot and Colerain.
• Seven-minute delay on I-71 near Montgomery Road.
• Six-minute delay on I-275 near Blue Rock Road.

Update 1:20 p.m. : Travel delays remain on Interstate 74 and 75, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

• 11-minute delay on I-75 near the Norwood Lateral.
• 18-minute delay on I-74 in the area of Cheviot and Colerain.
• Six-minute delay on I-74 near Harrison Pike.

Update 12:40 p.m. : Travel delays are being reported in Interstate 74 and 75.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is reporting an 11-minute delay on I-75 near the Norwood Lateral.

Three separate delays of nine, eight and five minutes have been reported on I-74 between Cincinnati and the Indiana border.

Original report : Traffic slowdowns and crashes are beginning to be reported on interstates 74, 71, 75 and 275 as the time for the eclipse grows closer.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is warning drivers to plan ahead and expect heavy traffic due to the eclipse. The path of totality is passing just to the west and north of Cincinnati.

Traffic cameras show a significant backup on westbound I-74 from Dent to the I-74/I-275 split.

At noon, there were three crashes on area highways:

• A crash is blocking the left westbound lane of I-275 just before the I-74 split.
• There is a crash on the ramp from I-75 north to Galbraith Road.
• There is a crash on the ramp from I-75 north to Davis Street in Lockland.
• There is a crash blocking the right shoulder of I-71 northbound just north of Ronald Reagan Highway.

Michigan roads toward Monroe, Toledo see heavy traffic from solar eclipse travelers

Traffic builds as eclipe gets closer.

The highways from metro Detroit toward Monroe and Toledo were more like parking lots Monday afternoon as eclipse watchers headed south for a glimpse of totality during the solar eclipse.

MDOT spokeswoman Diane Cross said in an email, "we are very much seeing heavy traffic on 75 going south from Wayne County into Monroe County."

MDOT spokesman Aaron Jenkins said Interstate 75 and U.S.-23 normally carry a lot of traffic. He said the department started issuing congestion messages for I-75 in Monroe County at 11 a.m., and in Ann Arbor at 11:45 a.m.

A silver of Michigan near Luna Pier in Monroe County is in the path of totality and so is Toledo.

Jenkins had this reminder: "If anyone is planning to check out today's eclipse, don't park on a freeway, highway, or anywhere else where parking is prohibited. And certainly, don't stand in a roadway while enjoying the event.'

Cross also had this advice: Even if you're stuck in a parking lot on the freeway, if you hear a siren or see an emergency responder approaching, get out of the way and move to the right.

See how the eclipse transformed America, city by city

For weeks, if not months, those who have seen one repeated to anyone who would listen: There’s nothing like experiencing the totality of a solar eclipse.

For some of them, this was a second time in six and a half years experiencing the eerie calm when the moon passes in front of the sun, at least for a few minutes. And yet, they were just as awestruck.

For others, it was a likely last opportunity to witness such a celestial phenomenon for two decades. It inspired gasps and smiles, solemnity and excitement.

Here is how it looked as the moon’s shadow crossed three countries and 13 U.S. states, with the time of totality in Eastern time.

2:10 — 2:14 p.m.

Uvalde, tex., 2:29 — 2:33 p.m., russellville, ark., 2:50 — 2:54 p.m., carbondale, ill., 2:59 — 3:03 p.m., bloomington, ind., 3:04 — 3:08 p.m., tiffin, ohio, 3:11 — 3:15 p.m., littleton, maine, 3:32 — 3:35 p.m..

A group of professors and students traveled from the United States to El Salto to conduct the most thorough experiment ever using an eclipse to test Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Einstein’s idea held that the massive sun would bend the light of surrounding stars more than previously estimated, proving that matter can pull and warp space and time.

The researchers used five telescopes to measure that effect more closely than ever, measuring stars that appear so close to the sun’s edge they can only be viewed during an eclipse.

After a countdown in Spanish, the sun darkened, and the data collection began. “TOTALITY,” yelled Sam Jeffe, a third-year physics major at Willamette University as it appeared in the telescopes’ lenses. “And it’s clear!”

Researchers will feed the data into the computer program, which will analyze the position of the stars and determine how the sun bent the light around them. But, for now, more than half the battle was done.

2:27 — 2:31 p.m.

On U.S. soil, totality first came into view in the border city of Eagle Pass, Tex., where a crowd gathered at a football field erupted into cheers as the skies darkened above them.

A singer crooned, “I’m walking on sunshine!” People put on protective glasses and craned their necks toward the sky. Many began to clap.

Vita Garza Flores, 76, traveled from Northern California to see the eclipse in the city where she was born. She brought her daughter and brother along with her.

She grabbed her eclipse glasses, positioning them across her sunglasses: “Wow!”

Students from Uvalde High School were also among the citizen scientists using the eclipse to learn more about the sun and its effects on Earth.

They joined Southwest Texas Junior College’s STEM club in participating in a program known as the Citizen Continental-America Telescope Eclipse. Called Citizen CATE, it will combine short videos of the eclipse taken via telescope into an hour-long movie that NASA says will detail magnetic structure within the sun’s corona and reveal its density. That will help scientists to measure the strength of the solar wind — charged particles that can disrupt electricity grids and produce auroras when they reach Earth.

In Russellville, NASA gathered scientists and broadcast the eclipse’s progress live online. Tourists gathered there, too, wearing T-shirts that declared, “I got mooned at the eclipse.”

A jazz band from Arkansas Tech University played. NASA hosted workshops and Q&A sessions with scientists, at least one of whom has been to space: Among the visitors were Mike Massimino, a veteran of NASA space flight missions to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002 and 2009.

Carbondale, Ill., earned the title of “eclipse crossroads of America,” having fallen in the path of totality for a 2017 solar eclipse as well as the event on Monday. This time, at least, the skies were clear for totality, and a full stadium of eclipse fans burst into collective screams when the moment came.

“This is so much better than 2017,” a one commentator on NASA’s live broadcast noted. “It’s so much darker than 2017.”

To many of those who experienced it, the eclipse was a spiritual event. In Bloomington, Buddhist monks marked it with a puja ceremony, a “ritual honoring and promoting inner and planetary healing,” according to the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center.

Eclipse watchers flocked to Yellowwood Lake where they could experience the eclipse in nature.

When the last pulses of the sun’s rays make their way to Earth before an eclipse enters totality, they appear like a brilliant diamond set on a golden ring. In Tiffin, that meant a chance for some “unforgettable” weddings at an event called “Elope at the Eclipse.”

Niagara falls, n.y..

Crowds flocked to landmarks across the path of totality for a memorable view. At Niagara Falls, despite a thick blanket of clouds, people gathered on the banks of the Niagara River and trained their phone cameras toward the sky. Streetlights turned on, if only briefly, when darkness descended.

The moon’s shadow reached North America at the beaches of Mazatlan, Mexico, just after 2:07 p.m. Eastern time. Just about 90 minutes later, it crossed the wilderness of northern Maine, on its way toward Canada, and then, the North Atlantic.

A total solar eclipse will next dim communities in the contiguous United States in 2044, but only in parts of Montana and the Dakotas. The country will have to wait one more year for the next coast-to-coast phenomenon, a total eclipse that will stretch from California to Florida on Aug. 12, 2045. It will be a Saturday.
