Look after the planet with every trip you take
Travel by train, boat and bus.
We’ve built adventures that don’t rely on flights, and we stand by the principle that travelling through the world is better than flying over.
Rail travel accounts for just 14g of CO2 per passenger mile, dwarfed by the 285g generated by air travel (Energy Saving Trust, 2018). You could get the train from London to Edinburgh five times and your carbon footprint would still be lower than if you flew there.
What is slow travel?
Slow travel is a mindset. Sustainability over speed and quality over mass tourism. It brings tourism spend to the communities seeking it and keeps the environmental footprint of travel down.
Cut your carbon
Opting for overland travel cuts carbon by 90% vs flying. Taking trains, boats, buses and bikes helps combat climate change while still enjoying travelling.
Love the journey
Choose enjoyment over speed, making the journey part of the holiday. Take the scenic route and embrace the serendipity of what you might find.
Avoid overtourism hotspots and chains. Select accommodations, restaurants and experiences that are locally run, locally loved and sustainable.

This has been the tour I dreamt of doing. Along the route, the Rocky Mountaineer was the best in service! They know how to wow the client and are good at it. I have glowing accolades for them. Everything in Alberta was amazing. Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff ... all those stops were incredible. We will arrive home on Saturday at about 3 pm. While there’s no place like home, our journey with Canada Rail Vacations was where it all began in September 2017. Thank you Martin, for operating a tour company that fit our needs....and then some. You gave us options to customize this trip to meet our wishes. Thanks to your staff who know their stuff and coddled me along the way, especially Spencer. And a huge shout out to our Tour Guide Julian. Absolutely knowledgeable about the routes we took and of the trains going through the spiral tunnels. Julian really made those four days of private tours so worth it for us. You have in us four happy clients who will now recommend Canada Rail Vacations to others, plus we have amazing memories. Thanks Martin! Lori, Brian, Ruby and Rudy, Virginia, USA (The Canadian Adventurer)
We just returned home from our recent trans-Canada train adventure and wanted to pass along our thoughts on the holiday. We arrived in Vancouver and stayed at the Fairmont, which was lovely. All of the Fairmont accommodations were outstanding. The Rocky Mountaineer was exceptional! The aesthetic, the staff, the food... everything was amazing. The staff in particular on the train were outstanding, I was so touched, as a vegan they went out of their way to accommodate me and went so far above and beyond (I never would imagine that level of service!). We were also so pleasantly surprised by the Delta Kamloops, our room was gorgeous and the location was great. Of course, the scenery in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper was incredible, and we so often found ourselves speechless. Both of our tours in Banff and Lake Louise with Julian were outstanding. He was so knowledgeable and kept us entertained every moment of the tour! All in all, an incredible experience from booking to the actual trip. Thank you for a memorable holiday! Stephanie, Hovan & Doris K., Toronto, Canada (The Canadian Adventurer)
Now safely back in Cyprus and settled in again after a great holiday with you in August. Big thanks to Canada Rail Vacations for leaving the excellent wine at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver, it certainly dampened down the trail dust! Shame you couldn't join us to drink it! You have a great team from the ladies who sorted us out before we left the hotels in Vancouver and Banff, to the staff waving us off and those welcoming us at each stop. The entire trip was memorable on so many levels, but an understated highlight for me was standing at the water's edge of Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, and gazing in wonder at the Walcott Quarry/Burgess Shale! I read about and studied the fossils but to see it in real life was awesome! Anthony, Cyprus (Rockies Circle Essentials)
Now that my wife and I have rested after our very enjoyable tour of Canada and are back into our normal routine we would not like the time to pass without passing on to Canada Rail staff our sincere thanks for making all the reservations and organizing the itinerary. Suffice it to say that things went like clockwork obviously due in large part to the experienced and dedicated Canada Rail Vacations staff. We will happily refer you to any of our friends and acquaintances who are considering travelling in Canada and will look to you next time we choose to travel in Canada. Many thanks to all! Doug & Norma L, Farrer, Australia (The Canadian Trip of a Lifetime)
Thanks for helping make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience for my daughter and myself. We had many planned, and unplanned, adventures and have many memories. Cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff on both VIA and Rocky Mountaineer. There were some hiccups with scheduling but the graciousness of the staff was superb. Our hotels were very good and thanks for the special gift in Vancouver. We also used your suggestions for touring the city, spot on! Will most likely never tour Canada again as my husband and I toured from Toronto East, but I am recommending Canada Rail Vacations to my family and friends. Thanks again. Judith & Cameron C, Alabama, USA (The Canadian Adventurer)

Onboard the UK’s sleeper train that travels to some of the country’s best beach spots
- Ryan Gray , Travel Reporter
- Published : 15:01, 27 Apr 2024
- Published : Invalid Date,
CORNWALL is one of the UK's best-loved holiday destinations, but its location at the tip of the south west sometimes puts people off.
For most holidaymakers, getting to the county requires a lengthy car journey, or even a domestic flight.
However, there is another method that transports people there over night, getting them to its warm weather and sandy beaches, with minimal effort.
Six days a week, a sleeper train with private cabins takes passengers direct from London Paddington to Cornwall.
The service is operated by Great Western Railway (GWR) and is known as the Night Riviera service.
En route, the train calls in at Plymouth, Lostwithiel Truro, St Erth and finally at Penzance , among several other stops.

It's among the country's favourite train journeys and is the most efficient way to make the journey from London across ground.
It also opens the rest of Europe up to people from Devon and Cornwall, according to Train expert the Man in Seat 61 .
On his blog, he said: "This excellent sleeper train is a travelling hotel, with private single or twin sleeper compartments and lounge car.
"It's the most time-effective way from London to Cornwall , making short breaks possible without a 6-hour drive or a domestic flight.

The trains were also refurbished back in 2018, making it an even more luxurious way to travel.
Despite that, prices are still fairly affordable, according to the Trainline .
They say that prices range from £25.50 to £135 depending on your accommodation preferences, journey and when you book.
Guests can book a seat on board the train, or for extra comfort, a private cabin .
All cabin guests have access to both lounges and showers at Paddington , Penzance, and Truro.
Sun Travel's favourite train journeys in the world
Sun Travel's journalists have taken their fare share of train journeys on their travels and here they share their most memorable rail experiences.
Davos to Geneva, Switzerland
"After a ski holiday in Davos, I took the scenic train back to Geneva Airport. The snow-covered mountains and tiny alpine villages that we passed were so beautiful that it felt like a moving picture was playing beyond the glass." - Caroline McGuire
Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen
"Nothing quite beats the Shinkansen bullet train, one of the fastest in the world. It hardly feels like you're whizzing along at speed until you look outside and see the trees a green blur. Make sure to book seat D or E too - as you'll have the best view of Mount Fuji along the way." Kara Godfrey
London to Paris by Eurostar
"Those who have never travelled on the Eurostar may wonder what’s so special about a seemingly ordinary train that takes you across the channel. You won’t have to waste a moment and can tick off all the top attractions from the Louvre to the Champs-Élysées which are both less than five kilometres from the Gare du Nord." - Sophie Swietochowski
Glasgow to Fort William by Scotrail
"From mountain landscapes and serene lochs to the wistful moors, I spent my three-hour journey from Glasgow to Fort William gazing out the window. Sit on the left-hand side of the train for the best views overlooking Loch Lomond." - Hope Brotherton
Beijing to Ulaanbatar
"The Trans-Mongolian Express is truly a train journey like no other. It starts amid the chaos of central Beijing before the city's high-rises give way to crumbling ancient villages and eventually the vast vacant plains of Mongolia, via the Gobi desert. The deep orange sunset seen in the middle of the desert is among the best I've witnessed anywhere." - Ryan Gray
They're also given a complimentary light breakfast on board, served in the cabin.
Seats meanwhile, offer a cheaper, no-frills experience in an " airline- style seat ".
The on-board lounge has a bar stocked with "well-known alcoholic drinks, tea, coffee, soft drinks, bar snacks and light bites".
Room service can also be ordered, adding to the hotel experience and adding an extra element to a trip to some of the UK's most impressive natural scenery .

It's easy to see why the clear blue seas and soft white sands at the beaches make the towns of Cornwall some of the county's most popular holiday hotspots.
The beaches at St Erth are very popular, while other places like Kynance Cove, Perranporth Beach and Porthcurno are just a handful of some of the many places holidaymakers love to visit.
The route from Paddington to Penzance takes just over eight hours to complete in total and runs every day, apart from Saturday.

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.
The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.
Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.
Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.
Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.
Rail strike dates
Tuesday 7 May
Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.
Wednesday 8 May
Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.
Thursday 9 May
Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.
Overtime ban dates
From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.
Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.
People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.
Keep up with all the latest news from the UK and around the world by following Sky News
How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?
Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.
Are there strikes on the Tube too?
There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.
There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:
Monday 29 April
Tuesday 30 April
Wednesday 1 May
Tuesday 2 May
Wednesday 3 May
Thursday 4 May
Friday 5 May
The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".
Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.
This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".
They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.
"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.
"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."
Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.
"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.
"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?
Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.
Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.
The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.
General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

May bank holiday travel chaos feared as people warned to plan journeys now
Share this with
Travellers are set to face mass journey disruptions over the May Bank Holiday next weekend.
London ’s Euston Station will be closed next Sunday to all but London Overground passengers.
People looking to travel are therefore advised to check for the latest updates before planning their routes, especially if they’re headed to Scotland .
From Saturday to Monday, May 4 to 6, engineers will also be carrying out major railway upgrades across the North West of England .
Those wanting to travel between Crewe, Liverpool, Warrington, Runcorn, Wigan, Bolton, Manchester, Preston and Carlisle are therefore advised to check well in advance of setting off.
The Bank Holiday misery comes after the Easter break was marred by three days of motorway and train line chaos , when severe congestion and planned works choked many of the nation’s most crucial motorways, A-roads and rail routes.
James Dean, passenger director for Network Rail’s North West and Central region, said: ‘We know there is never an ideal time to shut the railway but bank holidays continue to be the least disruptive time for us to carry out this essential maintenance.’
‘With Euston closed our advice is once again to check before you travel over the long weekend, and to plan ahead by checking National Rail Enquiries to see how your journey could be impacted.
Engineering work will further see buses replace trains between Doncaster and Darlington.
In the capital, other constructions and repairs will also cause disruption between Farringdon and Loughborough Junction, between Blackfriars and Herne Hill, and between Battersea Pier and Factory Junction.
On Sunday 5, there will be no Thameslink services running from either Wimbledon or Sutton.
The Sevenoaks service will also run from London Victoria instead of London Blackfriars.
Meanwhile, repair work between Shepherd’s Bush and Watford Junction will see the Southern service suspended between 8pm on the Saturday and noon on Sunday.
Trains along that route will then be suspended again from 9pm that evening.
