  • When packing for a trip to Egypt , be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable shoes. You'll also need a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings. If you're planning on spending any time in the desert, be sure to pack a scarf or bandanna to protect your face from the sand.
  • There are several ways that you can get around while travelling in Egypt . The most popular way is by taking taxis, as they are relatively inexpensive and readily available. Another option is taking the bus, which is a great way to see more of the country, but can be quite crowded during peak times.
  • There are also boat cruises available which are a great way to see some major sights along the Nile River such as the Pyramids of Giza and Luxor Temple.
  • When shopping in Egypt , be sure to bargain with the shopkeepers. This is expected, and it's how you'll get the best prices on souvenirs such as carpets, copperware, spices, and perfume.
  • Egypt has a warm climate year-round , with temperatures typically ranging from 21 to 32 °C.
  • The country experiences two main seasons: winter and summer. Winter lasts from November to April and is characterized by cooler temperatures and occasional rain. Summer lasts from May to October and is the hottest time of year, with temperatures often reaching over 40 °C.
  • Egypt is accessible by air, land, and sea . The major international airport is Cairo International Airport, which is located just outside of the city of Cairo. Visitors can also enter Egypt by land via the Sinai Peninsula or by sea via the port of Alexandria.
  • The currency in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). The exchange rate is currently around 15 EGP to 1 USD. ATMs are widely available throughout the country, and most major hotels and restaurants accept credit cards.
  • The official language of Egypt is Arabic , though English is also widely spoken. Many signs and menus will be in both Arabic and English, making it easy for visitors to get around.
  • Egypt is generally a safe country to visit , though visitors should take precautions against pickpockets in crowded areas such as markets and tourist sites.

Best time to visit egypt.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius - perfect for snorkelling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.

Choose to escape the crowds by travelling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating on reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humour to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Foods to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chilli paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the north-east corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterised by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defence. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighbouring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognise Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians and travellers are all amazed by this civilisation which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting of crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artefacts and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Spanning centuries and full of drama worthy of a soap opera, the epic history of Ancient Egypt is complex and we suggest you read about it before visiting.

9. Colossal characters

Near the modern city of Luxor stand the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These massive stone statues of Amenhotep III, while badly damaged, still maintain an unmistakable air of authority. Stand below them and be dwarfed by the scale of these tremendous figures.

10. The ancient heart of Cairo

Wander the cobbled streets of Islamic Cairo and uncover the ancient heart of this chaotic city. Admire mosques, palaces and houses, and peruse the goods on offer at one of the world’s oldest bazaars. Dating back to medieval times, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar is where people have traded goods for centuries.

Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewellery, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple, and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

3. Cartouche

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customise them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-fitr.

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

Discretion is advised for LGBTQI-travellers in Egypt. Though homosexuality is not officially outlawed, gay men have been prosecuted using debauchery and public morals laws and given long prison sentences. If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re travelling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-coloured clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

Top 5 airlines flying to Egypt

Not that good The crew in the plane were rim professional & almost lost in their work distribution

Service needs to improve. Air hostess do not register flyers request and we need to keep on repeating our request to them on multiple occasions

The individual attention the crew gives to passengers is commendable and I find them positively helpful.

Boarding was chaotic ,wish it was better orgnaised. Seating was comfortable , however food quality left much to be desired. Over all a great experience but with room for imporvement. The Dubai Delhi sector was terrible with poor seat pitch over crowded rack space , crew trying to put even laptop containing bags in to luggage even the waiting area was poorly kept - the dubai - delhi lap was extremly poor flying experience in all respects - the waiting area, the craft the seat pitch & the service quality. It is sad but this will make me look for other options when flying out of Delhi.

For such a long flight I feel the spacing of seats could’ve been better to make it more comfortable for passengers. Very little space to move & stretch legs.

The flight was delayed in Jhb and I could have had some help in Dubai trying to get to my connecting flight to London

Flight attendant Catalina was one of best ever. Paid attention to every detail. Food was good. Comfortable private seats in business class. We were not allowed in business class lounge in Dubai because our ticket supposedly didn’t cover this. They said our travel agent should of told us that. That has never happened on any other airline before. Beware of this especially if you have a long layover like we did.

For a short flight, Qatar Airways offers very good onboard service.

Not good. Expected a lot more as far as excellence.

Overall it was a very good experience. Boarding was efficient and well organized. The cabin crew were excellent. The meals were tasty and quite filling. The warm bread rolls were a nice touch. Seats were comfortable even if they were a little narrow. Entertainment selection was excellent.

The crew was fantastic and the over flight was perfect as well.

All over with Qatar airlines my experience was really bad due to delays and then putting me on different airlines and after 8 hours of wait I had to listen to their is no plane to fly for another 24 hours. Wore experience ever.

Too many boarding protocols. Never experienced with other international flights.

I had never seen any cabin crews behaving like that. They are not at all professionally fit for this job

Crews are very rude and unhelpful. Cramped seats in economy. Foods are useless

Okay not so good or great. The flight operated by Indigo is worst from boarding to luggage handling and food. Damaged one luggage and delayed another luggage. Still did not get it, since 2 days.

There was no phone charger, uncomfortable seats, unprofessional flight attendants, didn’t like food. Could not reserve seat in advance

Despite paying business class, the angle seat was uncomfortable. The crew was just ok. The baggage checkin was a mess at JNB.

The seats were broken, crew didn’t really care about service, boarding was not priority for business class, my bags arrived last

Comfortable flight with decent legroom and good seats. The crew were helpful and courteous and managed well with the stressful boarding and the chaos that’s involved. The food was decent, more than expected from a short flight like this. The only reservation I have was that the crew allowed passengers to board With massive amounts of hand luggage which were piled up on the empty seats next to passengers and and it was a risk to all passengers in the case of turbulence or emergency landing. I’ve never seen this ever on any flights I have boarded with many other airlines.

Flight was supposed to take off Saturday at noon. Bumped for unknown reasons until 2 am, then 9 am, then noon, then we don’t know. Not weather related. Dismal and non existent customer service. No 24/7 relations. Couldn’t get my bag back to attempt to get on another flight until 5pm Saturday. Will never take this airline again!

Greater clarity in organizing line-ups for the various boarding groups would have made it easier for all. Due to the many children, the announcements could not be heard clearly enough, so a simplicity in organization would have helped.

I had a great experience with EGYPTAIR. They offered me to check in my handbag which made it very easy since I use a cane. Thank you to EGYPTAIR crew for making sure everyone is receiving the right services.

The food could be better, the beef was quite tough. The crew were friendly and helpful on this flight, which has not being my experience on other Ethiopian flights.

The crew were extremely unfriendly. The plane was dirty and the entertainment system did not work, so they did not even give out earphones to anyone.

The flight was one hour late. The food is mediocre and the screen was broken

It is just ok, the sits are very uncomfortable, the temperature too low and there weren’t blankets. The food is mediocre and there are no screens to watch movies.

Seat in front of my wife was broken so it reclined further than normal and without having to push the recline button so my wife had absolutely no room the entire 17 hour flight. My seat was broken and wouldn't recline at all. Also.. my tray table was sticky and dirty right away before I even used it. Also...the floor in the back of the plane from our row of seats on back was totally soaked and both times we landed water came rushing out of the food/servant area like a flood onto the same already wet carpet. It got everything wet that was placed around our feet...including our shoes and socks.

Flight was smooth but unnecessary long because we had to refuel at FCO Rome. Air hostesses service and response to call light could be better. Both planes were old with broken seat arms and toilets. Why Africans had to be given the farthest Gates is what baffles me and why we have to pay for Aisle seats I found really strange. Is there ever an end to ripping people off even after paying over $2300 for one seat.

On my return flight the TV did not work the entire flight! They knew it wasn’t working but they let me sit there. The guy sitting nièce to me told me he was ok the previous flight and it wasn’t working. This is business class by the way!

Entertainment was very poor. Couldn’t watch anything. Ear pieces were the wrong type .

The wifi service was really poor I try to use it the service was extremely poor if that could be improved that will go a long way

Entertainment system poor - couldn't hear, no flight info etc.

Good range of movies but lacking decent tv shows. Wifi was really expensive on this flight, considering flights under 7 hours have a $9.99 USD charge for streaming, to jump up to $24.99 for a 7 hour 40 flight seemed a little bit of a rip off. Staff are inattentive, and really need to improve on the customer experience.

Crew were very polite and quicker in service. Excellent cooling, comfortable seats and tasty food served

My wife and I were upgraded to Business Class on our Dublin-Abu-Dhabi flight on the 22nd of January. Being served by "Mariyan" (not too sure about her name, she's from Tunisia) was the real highlight of our flight, she deserves to be working with etihad. We are looking forward to the next upgrade as we are flying back to Dublin on February 01, 2024. If I am not mistaken we have just reached GOLD status as Etihad Guests.

Eine Toilette der Business Class war gesperrt und somit nicht benutzbar.

Entertainment did not work from flight from Abu Dhabi to Kolkata. Emirates has a much better flight in that sector.

Very unfriendly team. It was very difficult to get a cup of coffee. Legroom was extremely small. Old, dilapidated plane.

Crew member took too long time to take back leftover food plates from passenger seats. Food was nice.Easy excellent checking.Guy at checking counter was really kind and helpful.Made our checking very quickly. Leftover food should be taken back ASAP. Because in economy class passanger have narrow space . In the long journey like this, passanger have difficulties to sit with the plates.overall experience was good.

Everything is good and improved and needs to improve economy class seat more specious so long journey we can enjoy and it will be give more relaxable. Overall all services good and safely landed . I enjoyed my journey and all the cabin crew members services very well.

Crew did not cooperate… I just asked water twice for one crew member and she didn’t get anything.. and when I asked other crew member he gave me water and he was not respectful.. I kept Hindu non veg meal chicken .. when I get my turn chicken was not provided and then they gave me veg paneer and green peas curry which I don’t like..

Sits are very uncomfortable and food quality should be improved. Alcohol you have to ask and wait for more then 1/2 hrs. Don’t feel like to travel in Etihad. It was 1st time we traveled in Etihad now we decided we don’t want to travel in Etihad.

What travelers are saying

"I didn’t take this tour exactly, but made some changes based on my schedule and interests and travel dates. It was my first time in Southeast Asia and I was a traveling solo female. Liz my trip consultant and contact person was so helpful and responsive to any and all my concerns and questions. It was a trip of a lifetime. I can not gush enough about the itinerary and experiences. I am completely impressed with is company and this person. Ya ya in Chang Mai and Sam in Bangkok are top notch guides. The diving in Phuket was arranged with Siam diving, a small private boat not an over stuffed crowded one. It felt like we were the only people in the ocean. Goo, GO, GO!!!!"

Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"Egypt – June 10 to June 16 We had planned this trip over almost two years. After looking at offerings from various vendors, we selected Memphis Tours. In a brief high-level summary, they did NOT disappoint! In rating this adventure on a 5-star scale, 5. One of my bucket list is to see the ancient wonders of the world. I’ve been to the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, the Acropolis in Athens, Colosseum in Rome, Machu Pichu, Great Wall of China, Stone Henge and now the antiques of Egypt. We structured this trip to see a lot; the Pyramids of Giza; The temples of Aswan and the temples of Luxor including the Valley of Kings. In a word WOW! To be up close, touch and otherwise experience these monuments some almost 5,000-year-old, is mind blowing. To understand the context in human history is amazing. Our trip included a mini-cruise on the Nile (WOW!). The boat the “Minerva” was good; including accommodations, staff and food. We flew from Cairo to Aswan, caught the boat, sailed from Aswan to Luxor; then flew back to Cairo to go home. Flights were included in our package. In the hope of not botching names, I’d like to call out three people: “Menna” who was our coordinator and overall “boss” of our trip. This young lady can do it all. “Mai” who was our guide in Cairo/Giza, so smart, feisty and knowledgeable in all things ancient Egypt. Lastly, but NOT least is “Waled” who took us to Aswan and Luxor. His passion and knowledge are amazing. I’m just glad there wasn’t a test after. Their in-depth knowledge of not just facts, but the whys are incredible. Memphis Tours – be glad you have these folks on your team!"

Egypt Tour Selection Trips

  • Remember to show respect for the local culture by covering shoulders and knees (a scarf can be very handy to cover up for mosques or temple visits)
  • Learn how to read numbers in Arabic to avoid being taken advantage of. As a tourist, you will most likely be quoted a heavily marked up price, so knowing what the actual written price is can help.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink - for this reason, salads are often best avoided in restaurants too.
  • Going on a guided tour often helps reduce any risk of getting sick from different food, but it is still wise to avoid street food.
  • Train trips from Cairo to the south are long and seats can be uncomfortable, so if your trip includes an overnight train, check if your tour company buys sleeper beds or seats if this is important to you.
  • Bus travel within Egypt covers a lot of ground, but stops are infrequent. So take advantage of the pit stops!
  • Swimming in the Nile is not advisable.

Additional details

Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

As of September 2021 - a  Level 3 Travel Advisory  has been in place by the US State Department. This advises "increased caution" when traveling to Egypt, as a result of certain terrorist activities and threats, and military activity on the border.

But what does this mean? It is advised that when you are visiting Egypt to remain cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times. It also means that the specified areas, e.g. the Sinai Peninsula and the borders, should be avoided. However, the Egyptian government emphasizes that all areas with a high concentration of tourism are heavily guarded to ensure your safety.

Yes, you can travel to Egypt , but there are certain precautions that you should take to keep yourself safe. The first is to know your country’s embassy location and number in case of an emergency which can be accessed through your country’s government website. You should also remain within the areas that are deemed safe.

Most government websites also provide a link to a site where you can input your information so you get messages from your embassy about safety conditions in the area. For visitors from the US, you can enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program). Also, it is advised to remain away from any political protests or crowds.

Finally, we at Travelstride highly recommend booking a guided tour , rather than trying to navigate the foreign country yourself.

Guided Tours to Egypt

Guided tours are always advised. Because they are always well-informed and know how to avoid, as well as respond to dangerous situations, guided tours are the safest option for foreign travelers.

Certain areas in Egypt, like the Sinai Peninsula, have a higher risk of danger, and most to all tours do not visit these places. Before your trip to Egypt, you can always contact your tour company to see what specific precautions they take to ensure everyone’s safety.

What should women wear in Egypt?

Another common question that many people often ask before traveling to Egypt is, generally, what to wear?

A general rule of thumb for women should be to  dress conservatively . This means covering as much skin as you can -- your shoulders and legs, especially. When surrounded by other tourists, you will likely be able to wear whatever you want, but it is traveling in between these locations, or at night, that you may run into problems. Certain mosques will also require you to cover your arms and hair.

Here is a list of items every woman should pack when visiting Egypt (or any other conservative Muslim country):

  • Lightweight scarf : this scarf will be your best friend. You can wrap it over your head and shoulders when you need to enter a mosque without having to drag around an entirely new outfit.
  • Sunglasses: Making eye contact in Egypt is considered to be flirting, so these will help you avoid the gaze of any men who might call out to you. These will also be useful in general as Egypt is a sunny place!
  • Maxi skirt:  Maxi skirts made of lightweight, loosely-fitting material are a great way to avoid getting too hot.
  • Tunic shirt:  Wearing a cotton or linen tunic-style shirt is a great way to beat the heat  and make sure you're covering up. This style of shirt will not only be long enough to cover your hips if you are wearing skinny jeans, but they usually have high necklines and longer sleeves.

What to do in Luxor, Egypt

About our egypt holiday packages, egypt holiday packages.

Discover Egypt, which is as intriguing to history enthusiasts as it is to sun worshippers all year. While some hurry to see the pyramids and pharaonic monuments, others choose to relax near the Red Sea or on a Nile cruise.

Our Egypt holiday packages will enable you to learn about the many civilizations that have followed each other for over 5000 years and have left an amazing legacy: Pharaonic, Greek, Roman, Christian, and Islamic. The comfortable atmosphere, cultural riches of this genuine open-air museum, beautiful beaches, and fantastic undersea world guarantee that every tourist to Egypt has an unforgettable trip.

For divers, Marsa Alam is a fantastic spot to stay. Indeed, the resort is extremely near to the Red Sea's deep south, which runs all the way to the Sudanese coast. You will find a world of wildlife and flora that is still intact, in addition to its magnificent sandy beaches, stunning bays, and untamed mangroves. The Red Sea is also a paradise for kite and windsurfers, so don’t wait anymore and take a look to our Egypt holiday packages!

Cheap holiday Egypt

Egypt, which is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, has three distinct climates: Mediterranean, semi-desert, and desert in the south. However, two variables remain vital regardless of where you are during your cheap holiday Egypt: the heat and the pace of sunlight. There are two distinct seasons: a moderate winter and a very hot and dry summer.

The Egyptian Mediterranean coast, where Alexandria is located, offers pleasant weather, with summers somewhat chilled by the presence of sea air. However, even though there is minimal rain, this is also the rainiest area.

The climate in the country's middle and around Cairo, the capital, is semi-arid. It rains far less than on the Mediterranean coast, and summer temperatures are comparable to southern heat waves. It is unusual for sirocco winds to blow up from the desert in the spring, bringing enormous volumes of sand and creating rapid temperature rises as well as dust storms. So this is important to choose the right season before choosing a cheap holiday Egypt.

Egypt special deals

Want to make sure you enjoy our Egypt special deals without getting a bad tan? Then Egypt is the destination for you! Egypt can match your expectations whether you want to be pampered in a luxury all-inclusive hotel on the Red Sea, visit the Pyramids of Giza with your own eyes, or go diving in a new environment!

There are many reasons to spend your holiday in Egypt, including Cairo and its historic core, which has remained untouched since the establishment of Islam. Luxor, the ancient Thebes' location, is bordered by the most imposing magnificent burial chambers of antiquity farther south on the Nile. Even farther south lies Aswan, with its magnificent temples.

Luxor features the country's most ancient Egyptian structures. Don't miss the temples of Karnak and Luxor on the Nile's banks, as well as the pharaohs' tombs in Thebes' highlands. Admire the sunset from there: it's magnificent and mesmerizing!

As long as you visit Egypt at the appropriate season, this is a place that will entice you. To begin with, its terrain provides one of the most stunning sights available that we recommend you to explore in the scope of our Egypt special deals. "It is a vision that has no equivalent on earth," said the poet Chateaubriand. How to resist the tenderness of the Nile's green sceneries, the dramatic excess of the Aswan dam near Lake Nasser, the odd glow of the Sinai desert, or the brilliance of the ochre stone cliffs at sunset? It seems obvious that there is a type of sorcery at work in Egyptian seduction. The beautiful repetition of the calls to prayer shouted from the tops of the country's numerous minarets, and the trembling of the ancient feluccas that ply the azure waters of the Nile...

Egypt holiday package

Egypt, the birthplace of civilizations, is five thousand years old and yet full of mystery. It also provides an excellent history lesson. One naturally marvels at the colossi of Memnon on the necropolis of Thebes and the enormous attractiveness of the pyramids of Giza, famed library of the human race guarded by a magnificent sphinx. Further on, one can marvel at the luminous frescoes of the royal tombs and the enchantment of the temples of Edfu, Luxor, or Abu Simbel with their beautiful hieroglyphic inscriptions, not to mention the amphitheatre of Alexandria, the round of ancient Egyptian divinities (Isis, Anubis, Seth, or Apis), the mask of Tutankhamen, and the brilliance of Ramses II's jewels. All of them are mythological jewels that enchant and that neither the sight nor the soul can get enough of. So there will be so many things to see with one of your Egypt holiday package…

Egypt is spanned by the Nile, along which you may cruise and discover ancient Egyptian monuments and their riches. Traveling to Egypt also means visiting the pyramids of the pharaohs, and the Sphinx. Staying in Cairo or Luxor allows you to learn about an essential aspect of Egyptian culture. The country has several must-see resorts such as Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada, or Marsa Alam. Its coasts are pleasantly bordered by the Red Sea, known for its exceptional seabed. Discover also the tours in Egypt to not miss anything and relax for your next Egypt holiday package.

Visit the last of the seven Wonders of the World, the site of Giza. This attraction is guarded by the famous sphinx. Aswan is a city in southern Egypt with the fascinating Abu Simbel temple in its vicinity. From here, cruises on the Nile River start to reach Luxor. This journey takes visitors to the mythical sites of ancient Egypt. Luxor is a must for a cheap summer vacation in Egypt. Its heritage is legendary, worthily represented by the tombs of the Valley of the Kings and Queens. Just a short distance away is Cairo, the capital of Egypt. This city-museum is a historical jewel in its own right. Its many minarets, mosques and alleys are all wonders to admire during your excursion.

South Korea's president says there should be a pre-emptive response to risk factors arising from tensions in the Middle East.

He was speaking about his country's energy dependence on the region - when things get tense in the Middle East, there is a direct impact on oil prices. That affects South Korea's economy and supply chain.

Yoon Suk Yeol said during a cabinet meeting that 60% of the oil imported by South Korea comes through the Strait of Hormuz.

"The large increase in transport costs and oil price increases will directly lead to increases in prices for us," he said.

: "There should be a pre-emptive response to various risk factors that can arise."

He did not elaborate.

Iran's foreign minister has told his Chinese counterpart that Iran is willing to exercise restraint and has no intention of escalating the situation in the Middle East, according to Xinhua.

The Chinese state news outlet reported that Wang Li and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian spoke late on Monday about the regional tensions.

Mr Amir-Abdollahian said the UN Security Council did not respond strongly enough to Israel's attack on Iran's embassy building in Damascus and that Iran had the right to defend itself.

Mr Wang said China strongly condemned the attack on the Iranian diplomatic post, regarding it as a serious violation of international law.

"It is believed that Iran can handle the situation well and spare the region further turmoil while safeguarding its own sovereignty and dignity," he said in comments reported by Xinhua.

Iraq's prime minister Mohammed Shia al Sudani has joined calls for restraint in the Middle East.

He was speaking during a visit to the US for talks with various leaders, including Joe Biden, on Monday.

"In the spirit of partnership our views may be divergent about what’s happening in the region," Mr Sudani said through a translator as he sat next to Mr Biden in the Oval Office.

"But we agree certainly about the international law, the international humanitarian law and the responsibility to protect and the law of war, and we reject any repression against the civilians, especially women and children, and we encourage the commitment about respecting international norms and diplomatic missions."

Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ali Tamim, who co-chaired a meeting of the US-Iraq Higher Coordinating Committee with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, said Iraq was concerned about its region being "dragged into a wider war that will threaten international security and safety".

Iraq's own situation was also discussed - the US has welcomed Mr Sudani's economic reform plans but the influence of Iran-backed groups still raises concerns.

The US has 2,500 troops in Iraq helping local forces to prevent a return of Islamic State, which seized large parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014 before being defeated.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog chief says he is worried Israel could target Iranian nuclear facilities.

Israel's military chief said on Monday that his country will respond to last weekend's missile and drone attack by Iran, which was launched in retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike on Iran's embassy compound in Syria.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said Iran closed its nuclear facilities on Sunday over "security considerations".

They reopened on Monday but IAEA inspectors were kept away "until we see that the situation is completely calm".

"We are going to resume tomorrow," Mr Grossi said on Monday.

"This has not had an impact on our inspection activity."

When asked about the possibility of an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, he said: "We are always concerned about this possibility."

He urged "extreme restraint".

The IAEA regularly inspects Iran's main nuclear facilities - Iran says its nuclear programme is peaceful but Western countries say Tehran is trying to make nuclear bombs.

Italy, which holds the rotating presidency of the G7, is open to new sanctions against individuals engaged against Israel following the Iranian drone and missile attack, its foreign minister has said.

"If we need to have more sanctions for people clearly engaged against Israel, supporting for example terrorism, supporting Hamas, it is possible to do it," Antonio Tajani told reporters.

"But we need to be very serious and to work all together."

G7 leaders have unanimously condemned Iran's attack on Israel and urged "restraint" on all sides to avoid the situation in the region escalating any further.

They spoke as part of an extraordinary meeting convened by Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the wake of the unprecedented attacks.

Exiled Crown Prince of Iran Reza Pahlavi has said the Iranian regime is "becoming weaker and weaker and [more] desperate by the minute".

He told Sky's World With Yalda Hakim programme that "repression at home and aggression abroad is part and parcel of the [regime's] basic strategy".

Mr Pahlavi said Iran spread propaganda after the attack on Israel to satisfy its base "but to the detriment of a nation that are the first victims of this regime".

He argued that billions of dollars worth of weapons were "wasted" while Iranians are queuing for food, and that the regime "doesn't spend a dime on the needs of our society".

"Iranians do not at all stand for what this regime stands for," he said.

Mr Pahlavi said the "ultimate solution" is for the regime to be ended and for the Iranian people to win freedom.

He calls on world leaders and decision makers to discuss the issue "seriously", saying they should invest in the "alternative to this regime".

Two Palestinians have been killed today in the occupied West Bank province of Nablus, a local mayor has said.

"About 50 settlers, a large number of them armed, attacked the residents of Khirbet al Tawil village east of Aqraba in the province of Nablus," said mayor Salah Bani Jaber.

"They opened fire on the youth and this led to the death of two of the youth and the injury of others."

The IDF earlier said its forces had killed a 17-year-old during a raid in Nablus.

A spokesperson for Israel's Border Police said undercover border police troops, together with the Israeli army, launched an operation in the city of Nablus to arrest a suspect.

During the operation, riots broke out in which one person threw an explosive device at the troops and was shot dead by the undercover unit, the spokesperson said.

Take the win, or strike back?

The question exercising Israeli minds in the wake of Iran's missile onslaught and the focus of intense debate here. The outcome will decide the immediate fate of this region. A return to shadow war, or all out escalation into something much more serious.

Joe Biden and other allies says Israel should bank a number of wins: Israel's military success repelling Iran's ballistic onslaught and its assassination of several high level Iranians in the Damascus consulate on 1 April blamed on Israel that precipitated Iran's retaliation.

And in the Israeli media there are others making a bigger point.  Ever since 7 October the steady process of rapprochement between Israel and former Arab allies has been in doubt.  Saturday night showed it's alive and well.

We don't know the details but a number of Arab states helped Israel either shoot down Iran's missiles or let in Israeli jets to do so.

There are passionate arguments being made here that that coalition effort is a template for the future. Its proponents argue Israel should build on the unprecedented cooperation from former enemies not jeopardise it.

But the hawks reject that.

"When a bully tries to hit you 350 times and only succeeds seven times, you've NOT won," tweeted former prime minister Naftali Bennett in a long screed calling for immediate action against Iran.

Many here can't accept that Israel is safer because it was helped on one night to avert a well telegraphed threat that took hours to reach Israel. They say Iran must be deterred from ever trying to do the same again.

"How DO you deter?" Mr Bennett asks. "By exacting a deeply painful price."

So while Rishi Sunak, Keir Starmer and Joe Biden all say restraint is in Israel's best interests, many here are not convinced. Israelis are wary of outsourcing their security to others. The history of the Jewish people has shown tragically where that has failed in the past.

So while the world fears any Israeli retaliation that could plunge the region into a deepening and widening conflict, some in Israel say its long term security requires immediate action that could risk doing just that.

Reports suggest the hawks are prevailing in government. It is not a question of if Israel will retaliate, more when and what.

The hope would be for a goldilocks option, not so hot it risks all out regional war, but also not so cold it fails to land a punch deterring Iran from doing the same again.

Not easy in this volatile region.

Iranians have gathered in Tehran to celebrate their country's attack on Israel last weekend.

Iran launched more than 330 drones and missiles at its rival in retaliation for an attack on its consulate in Syria.

Israel has delayed its plans to move ahead with a ground offensive on Rafah after it was subjected to an unprecedented Iranian rocket attack over the weekend, according to reports.

The Jewish state's air force was set to begin dropping leaflets on parts of Gaza's southernmost city, however those plans were paused, according to CNN citing Israeli sources.

Heated debate was reportedly sparked in Benjamin Netanyahu's war cabinet over how to respond to Tehran's attack on Saturday night.

Disagreement between members seems to be over the speed and the degree of the response, with all determined to retaliate, but disagreeing on the particulars.

Among the options that are being considered is a strike on an Iranian facility that would send a message, but would avoid causing casualties, according to one Israeli official.

International pressure on the Israeli government to de-escalate the already dangerous situation in the region, is also said to be playing a part in deciding the severity of the response.

Solar eclipse 2024: A traveller’s guide to the best places to be when the light goes out

O n 8 April 2024, a total solar eclipse will sweep across North America , providing an astronomical experience in many alluring locations.

Only a tiny proportion of humanity has ever witnessed a total eclipse – but tens of millions of people will be able to experience one as the “path of totality” sweeps from the Pacific to the Atlantic during the course of that magical Monday.

Here’s what you need to know about why you should see it and where to be.

What happens during a total solar eclipse?

The greatest show on earth comes courtesy of the lifeless moon. Normally the orbiting lunar lump merely provides earth with tides, moonlight and somewhere to aim space rockets. But roughly once a year the natural satellite aligns with the sun and, thanks to a geometric miracle, blots out the hub of the solar system to create a total eclipse.

“Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, it’s also about 400 times closer to earth than the sun is,” says Nasa. “This means that from earth, the moon and the sun appear to be roughly the same size in the sky.”

A narrow band marking the “path of totality” carves an arc of darkness across the surface of our planet. If you are somewhere on that line at the predicted time, and you have clear skies, then the experience will become a lifelong memory.

The closer you are to the centre of the path of totality, the longer the total eclipse will last. The astronomer Dr John Mason, who has guided dozens of eclipse trips (and will be doing so again in 2024), says: “People down in southwest Texas will get about four minutes 20 seconds, and that reduces to about three minutes 20 seconds up in the northeast. That’s a pretty good, long total eclipse.”

What’s so good about seeing an eclipse?

In the days leading up to the eclipse, locations in the path of totality acquire something of a carnival atmosphere as astronomical tourists converge in excited anticipation.

On the day, the cosmological performance begins with a warm-up lasting more than an hour, during which the moon steadily nibbles away at the surface of the sun.

Suddenly, you experience totality. The stars and planets appear in the middle of the day. The air chills.

To testify to the heavenly fit between our two most familiar heavenly bodies, faint diamonds known as Baily’s beads peek out from behind the moon. They actually comprise light from the sun slipping through lunar valleys.

A sight to behold – so long as you can see the moon blotting out the sun and appreciate the mathematical perfection of nature in our corner of the galaxy.

Eclipses are entirely predictable: we know the stripes that the next few dozen will paint upon the surface of the Earth. But the weather is not. Cloud cover, which blighted the Cornwall eclipse in 1999, downgrades a cosmological marvel to an eerie daytime gloom.

Almost as predictable as the eclipse is that traffic towards the path of totality will be heavy on the morning of 8 April 2024.

Accommodation rates are astronomical: even humdrum motel rooms in Niagara, central in the path of totality, are selling for C$600 (£350) for the night of 7-8 April 2024.

Where will the great American eclipse 2024 be visible?

The path of totality makes landfall from the Pacific at Mazatlan on Mexico’s Pacific Coast and sweeps northeastwards to reach the US-Mexican border at Piedras Negras.

In the US, three big Texan cities – San Antonio, Austin and Dallas – are on the extremes of the path of totality; many citizens are likely to drive to locations near the centre of the line.

Arkansas will be an attractive place to see the eclipse , with both Texarkana (on the border with Texas) and Little Rock within the path of totality.

In the Midwest, Indianapolis and Cleveland share the distinction of being fairly central in the path of totality. In upstate New York, Buffalo and nearby Niagara Falls (shared with Canada) could be extremely attractive – though prone in early April to cloudy skies.

In Canada , Montreal is just touched by the path of totality. The line then reverts to the US, passing across northern Maine – which promises to be a superb with clear skies. Then back to Canada’s Maritime Provinces, with New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland all in the line of darkness.

Will I be able to see a partial eclipse from the UK?

Yes. The eclipse ends with the sunset in the eastern Atlantic, about 600 miles off the coast of Cornwall , before it reaches the UK and Ireland . But on the island of Ireland and western parts of Great Britain, a partial eclipse may be visible with the sun low in the sky.

If skies are clear and you have an open view to the west, it will start at around 7.55pm in Cardiff, Liverpool , Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

BBC Weather presenter Simon King said: “With the partial solar eclipse occurring late in the day UK time, the Sun will be low to the horizon and will actually set before the spectacle is over.”

Can I combine an exciting city with a partial eclipse?

Boston, New York and Chicago are among the big cities that will see a sizeable chunk of the sun blotted out. Viewer as far apart as Alaska and the far north of Colombia and the Caribbean will, if skies are clear and they use the correct eye protection, see a partial eclipse. But there is nothing to compare with a total eclipse.

Eclipse guru Dr Mason sums up the difference between a 99 per cent partial eclipse and a total eclipse as far apart as “a peck on the cheek and a night of passion”.

“There will be people who will look at the map and say, ‘I live in Cincinnati or I live in Columbus [Ohio] and I’m just outside the zone of totality. But I’m going to get a 99 per cent-plus eclipse, so maybe I won’t bother to travel’.

“What they don’t realise is there an enormous difference between 99 per cent and 100 per cent. And there’s a range of phenomena that they won’t see if they put up with 99 per cent.”

You must use special eclipse safety glasses or viewers when viewing a partial eclipse or during the partial phases of a total solar eclipse.

Where should I be for the total experience?

There are no guarantees of clear skies: all you can do is play the odds based on the record of cloud cover for the corresponding date in previous years.

Dr Mason says the average expected cloud cover amounts increase from around 40-45 per cent on the Mexico/Texas border to over 80 per cent in Maine, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Three particularly tempting locations:

  • Southern Texas , close to San Antonio or Austin. Besides clear skies being more likely than not, access is easy with direct flights to Austin. Importantly there is much to explore in the region before and after the eclipse, from Big Bend National Park on the Rio Grande to Space Center Houston – an excellent place to continue the cosmological theme.
  • Northern Arkansas , a picturesque part of the state, with the added attraction of Memphis just a couple of hours away.
  • Niagara Falls : the dramatic border between the US and Canada could be an eclipse washout due to clouds. But the natural surroundings are impeccable – and there is plenty of accommodation, which will avoid the risk of being caught in severe traffic congestion on the freeways from Toronto and locations in New York State.

However, the most recent forecasts for cloud cover suggest that the Midwest around Indianapolis and the northeastern state of Maine could have the best prospects.

When are the next total solar eclipses?

Summer 2026 – Wednesday 12 August, to be precise – should bring a spectacular eclipse visible in northern Spain at the height of the European holiday season. The path of totality begins in the Arctic and crosses Greenland and Iceland before arriving in the northern half of Spain. The stripe of darkness will traverse the great cities of Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia in mainland Spain before arriving in Palma de Mallorca.

The following summer (2 August 2027), the southern tip of mainland Spain is in the path of totality for an eclipse that will sweep across North Africa and the Arabian peninsula : going east from the Strait of Gibraltar, it will encompass Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, the northeasternmost corner of Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Just under 12 months later, on 22 July 2028, Outback Australia will be the place to be. A total eclipse will make landfall in northern Western Australia, sweep across the Northern Territory and part of southwest Queensland – then clean across New South Wales, with Sydney in the middle of the path of totality.

Winter cloud cover could disrupt the experience in Australia’s largest city – and is very likely in the southern portion of New Zealand’s South Island where the eclipse reaches a finale.

Australia also features in the cosmological plans on 25 November 2030. This is early summer in the southern hemisphere, and likely to be good conditions for viewing in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (Durban is on the path of totality) as well as South Australia.
