The Value Of Travelling: 13 Core Travel Values That Speak To Travel Addicts

On the very first page of my website , there is a purple and green tree that is easy to skip over that is titled “Travel Principles”. It was the first part of the website that came to being and one of the most overlooked. Mostly because I haven’t taken the time to explain it in detail before. My philosophy on the topic of travel values or travel principles is more broadly based on the fact that this world is HUGE! There is so much to see. There is so much to explore! And often even the most well-traveled of us can feel like we are playing catch up. This for some people might be a motivating thought pushing them to see and do more. But for some of us, especially if we are not physically, financially, or mentally able to travel, it can be crushing. Let’s start by taking a look at the map!

Now tell me what do you see?

A few pins covering an area so vast and boundless it makes you wonder, what have I seen? Maybe your map is covered in full. Maybe there are but a couple of pins. Maybe there is only one. Take a moment and mentally ZOOM IN. Take stock of all the towns you have visited hidden beneath one single pin. Of all the people you have come across whose stories you have shared and listened to. Recognize how much natural beauty surrounds you that others travel far and wide to reach.  Measure places not in terms of their span in covering this globe but in their depth. And wherever you are in the world. Whatever pin you are happening to at that moment occupy. Try to ZOOM IN a bit!

Travel Values and Travel Principles

These are the travel values that make sense for me to follow and can be applied anywhere and everywhere. You don’t have to travel far to fulfill them, in some cases you don’t even need to leave your house. Through mini-adventures, you can read a new book, explore a country through a documentary, start to appreciate a new cuisine or learn a new language, and become aware of cultural norms in different parts of the planet. If you take something from this list let it be that it’s not complete, final, or absolute. I encourage you to make your own list of the things you consider important in life and see how you can incorporate them into your life daily. 2020 Update: Especially right now with a lot of people in lockdown indefinitely it is important to remember why the ability to travel was important to us on a personal level. (without disregarding the business and financial implications of it). By creating a set core of travel values or travel principles, we are rethinking the way we view travel as education and as something we can achieve wherever we are, as long as we have access to resources and live in a democratic society, where curiosity is rewarded and information is open.

Appreciation

  •  to go through life valuing those moments, people or experiences that make everything else worth it.
  • to appreciate the opportunities you have been given.

Accountability

  • to acknowledge there are things we could all be doing better. To acknowledge your contribution towards humanity’s wrongdoings.
  • travelling as a way of realizing what could be done better and then setting out to make it happen.

Adaptability

  • a lesson in realizing how few things in life are under your control.
  • travelling as a way of embracing changes as a given in all situations and preparing your mentality to cope with the adjustments.
  • to set roots and to establish a new home somewhere.
  • travel is about finding that you belong in the most surprising places
  • to understand the way other people lead their lives. To develop empathy, to connect with our fellow human beings and to experience their reality.
  • travelling as a way of realizing our differences are not what defines us.

Development

• to develop ideas of your self-image of places that inspire you or of places that don’t. • travelling as a tool of creating your senses, your dreams, your knowledge.

Inspiration

  •  to allow your experiences to give you new meaning in life, in art, in business.
  • • travelling as a way of mentally refreshing old ideas.
  • to explore your capacity of creating and sharing ideas, pictures or words free of limitations.
  • travelling as a way of realizing we are not all able to be free.
  • the ability to explore what drives the inner working of your mind free from constraint and censorship.
  • travelling as a way of giving your mind room to grow.
  • to create for both the physical and mental state of your mind a protective barrier from the worries of everyday life.
  • travelling as a way of finding peace and calm
  • where to go, what to see, how to get there.
  • travelling as way of developing the skills of knowing what you want or allowing others to plan it for you.

Understanding

  • to develop sympathy, compassion or tolerance and gain new perspective through the connections you built with others.
  • travelling as a way of removing egocentrism.

Living & Traveling According To Your Core Values

It is not a surprise that travel, especially solo travel, can do wonders for self-esteem and provide a major confidence boost. We hear countless stories and endorsements of how empowering travel can be. What we may not also realize is that it can help to re-evaluate and emphasize our core values as well. When we know and practice our core values, this can also improve our self-esteem, confidence, and quality of life.

To first identify what our values are, I like to think that where we feel a strong passion, feel drawn to a certain area, action, or feeling time and time again, this is where we want to keep our focus. My guess is that if you are reading this, traveling is likely a strong passion for you – me too!

Within our passions, less obvious values (not actions or causes necessarily) may be hidden. Core values can include independence, success, wisdom, compassion, tolerance, and endless others. How we travel, where we travel, and why we travel can all be pathways to really understanding who we are.

We tend to utilize our values as guides to our decision making in everyday life. The things that are most important to us impact what kind of jobs we do, the kind of relationships we have, the way we interact with others, and our hobbies. Therefore, it’s not a stretch to assume we could be using our values to decide our travel plans.

If knowledge and wisdom are some of your strongest values, visit places that exercise your mind. If compassion and love some of your strongest values, find ways to give back when you travel or go with people who make you feel the most yourself. If spirituality is a value, find places and activities that allow you to feel connected to your beliefs. Allow yourself to notice what it is that is most exciting and rewarding for you, and follow it.

Ideally, we are finding ways to feel connected to our values in everyday life, not just while traveling. What makes considering your values unique in this scenario is that if travel is already something that inspires you, you may experience more an even more elevated level of growth, peace, contentment, and sense of wholeness. When we are doing this consistently, I believe we are less likely to feel anxious, intense levels of depression, less stress, and experience a higher quality of engagement and connection with others and the world around us.

Finding the most beautiful places to witness in person, meeting locals, engaging in their traditions, learning about their history, growing through adversity, and so many more opportunities can be exhilarating. When we are living in alignment with our values, it’s not hard to image that we are more likely to feel whole. And isn’t that what all this is about?

THE INTREPID FOUNDATION

Our not-for-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, was born in 2002 to give Intrepid travellers a chance to make a bigger impact in the communities they visit. Over the last 20 years, our travellers have helped raise more than AUD 15.5 million and supported over 160 communities around the world. 

We make a donation to an Intrepid Foundation partner on behalf of every traveller on our Intrepid multi-day trips. Plus, we take care of the admin fees, so 100% of donations go where they're needed most.

Minimize your impact on the environment..

  • Remove packaging from items before leaving home.
  • Bring and use biodegradable soaps and detergents.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle and water filtration system to avoid single-use disposable water and beverage bottles.
  • Conserve water.

  • Do not build campfires in dry or protected areas.
  • Do not distribute nondegradable, breakable gifts or items in nondegradable packaging.
  • Carry a reusable shopping bag and decline disposable plastic bags from vendors.
  • Do not buy or consume animal or plant products harvested from unmanaged wild populations.
  • Leave no litter.

  • Pick up litter left by others.
  • Do not rely on remote local markets or village food supplies to outfit your trip. You can cause inflation and food shortages.
  • Do not patronize accommodations, organizations, vendors, operators, villages, or individuals who violate environmental regulations or principles.

  • Advocate for sustainable use of the natural environments you visit.
  • Discuss conservation with local students and teachers.
  • Tell your guides and the Journeys staff about improvements we can make to positively affect nature and culture conservation.
  • Make donations to temples, schools, monasteries, parks, and museums.
  • Join local conservation organizations.

Embrace diversity. reverse missionary zeal..

  • Learn proper local etiquette.
  • Dress neatly and conservatively in your own cultural tradition.
  • Employ local residents as guides, porters or drivers.
  • Treat them as friends, not servants. Learn the names of your local hosts and a little of their native language.
  • Listen and learn; do not preach or criticize cultural practices.

  • Purchase souvenirs from the original makers and do not drive an excessively hard bargain.
  • Evaluate requests for gifts carefully and provide a balanced view of Western material culture.
  • Determine from your guide the most culturally appropriate way to reciprocate for local hospitality.
  • Take photographs within the guidelines suggested by your guide. Make good on promises to send copies.

At Boundless Journeys, our mission is to provide “outstanding travel experiences for people with an adventurous spirit.” But what does that mean, really? How does our staff ensure that everything we do is in service to our mission? Boundless Journeys’ Core Values are our guiding principles that we check ourselves against every time we make a decision.

1. We are committed to being the best in everything we do.

We know it may sound trite, but we are committed to being the best. And here’s the thing: We really are committed.

Everyone from our home office staff to our guides in the field eats, sleeps, and breathes planning great experiences for our travelers. We spend countless hours belaboring which Italian winery has the best selection or reviewing tide charts for the best paddling routes in Palau during November.

This may seem like minutiae to some, but we believe in finessing each day to make sure it is the best it can be—full of discovery and relaxation to boot. No wonder our guests have voted us among the top tour operators in the world in the Travel + Leisure annual survey multiple times. 96% of Trip Evaluations from our travelers come back with an overall rating of “excellent” or “outstanding.”

But we won’t sleep until that number is 100% because, frankly, just being “good” isn’t good enough for us.

2. We believe in being adventurous.

We believe in losing ourselves (without getting lost!). We believe in ducking down quiet alleyways to find an out-of-the-way noodle stall and in taking the path less traveled. We believe in pushing ourselves, just once in a while, perhaps a little further than we thought we could go, and in finding something every day to laugh about. We like to hike hidden trails, paddle undiscovered waters, and come in through the back door to Machu Picchu .

We believe that a life without adventure is one that is not fully lived, and put simply, we want to live fully.

3. We strive to travel responsibly.

Let’s face it. Even the most “responsible” travel has an impact on the world. So we strive, every day, for our net impact to be positive. Keeping our groups small allows us to blend into the places we are exploring, rather than diluting the local flavor with our presence. Even if it costs more, we follow the rules (you’d be surprised at how many active adventure companies don’t!).

We work closely with local partners to ensure that everyone who serves us earns a fair wage. We carefully research the experiences we provide to our guests so that we can be confident that wildlife, ecosystems, historic sites, and most importantly the people we encounter are not being harmed by our activities.

Our goal is to form a symbiotic relationship with the places we go, so that not only do they benefit, but our travelers also return home with a better understanding of their place in the world.

4. We seek authenticity.

You won’t find historic re-enactments, generic museums, and themed tourist parks on a Boundless Journeys adventure. Instead, we seek out opportunities to discover history and understand culture through real experiences.

We duck into a Japanese temple for a meditation session, awake to the raucous shrieks of howler monkeys in a Costa Rican rainforest , stop to fill our lungs with crisp mountain air while hiking a high pass in Switzerland in the footsteps of Europe’s great mountaineers, and feel the earth tremble as a lumbering elephant passes—this close!—to our safari vehicle.

Make no mistake, real experiences can also be raw ones: paddling your kayak past the remnants of a warplane sunken in the aquamarine waters of the South Pacific , crawling through the claustrophobia-inducing Cu Chi tunnels of Ho Chi Minh City , or listening to a Maasai elder speak of a changing Africa. It’s when the past comes alive, mixes with the present, and moves you.

Prayer flags fluttering on the mountain breeze at Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan , the bright scent of lemon wafting across a Sicilian hiking path, the drama of the Great Migration crossing the Mara River in Tanzania —those places, those views, those breathtaking moments—are unforgettable.

But for us, it’s the connections we forge: with friendly knowledgeable guides, with partners who share our passion for outstanding travel experiences, and with local people along the way—cheese-makers, farmers, vintners, and musicians—who really make the Boundless Journeys experience unique.

KHM Travel Group began as a small team working in one office with the idea of being a host agency dedicated to helping agents achieve their dreams of selling travel. Today, we have over 50 team members who work to provide our agents with the latest technology, up-to-date resources, and education both online and at live events. As we have grown, we have developed a set of Core Values to ensure our whole team works toward our mission: “We will empower, educate, support, and promote independent travel agents.”

Our primary Core Value is People First . To us, this means affirming the value of others and treating them with respect, honor, and dignity. Whether this is in our Corporate Office, over the phone, or on live chat, we strive to approach every interaction with People First in mind. This value allows us to act in the best interest of our industry partners, travel agents, and team members. It’s the foundation for each of the other Core Values.

Loyalty means being faithful to our families, team members, the company, agents, and our communities. We strive to balance our many commitments and help our agents do the same to achieve a work-life balance.

We value the relationships we have with other team members and our agents and work hard to make certain we are honest and trustworthy as individuals and as a company. In conjunction with integrity, we value authenticity . We present ourselves in a sincere and straightforward way while remaining professional and respectful to others.

We believe in helping others achieve prosperity , both economically and personally. Then, we share our prosperity with others to embody the value of generosity . For us, generosity is not just monetary; it is investing our time, talents, and resources to help our teams and our agents. We extend our values of prosperity and generosity beyond ourselves, by acknowledging and supporting those we are tied to as a global community .

The adventure began for KHM Travel Group in 2005, with a team of three people working out of a small office. With a shared love of travel, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, they dedicated themselves to helping others achieve their dreams of selling travel. 

KHM Travel Group now has a team of nearly 60 team members working out of its Corporate Office in Ohio and remotely around the country. Our network of hosted travel agents has grown to over 4,000. 

This growth is exciting but comes with the potential for team members to feel detached from the company’s original goals and family atmosphere. To ensure the whole team works toward the company’s mission, which is “to empower, educate, support, and promote independent travel agents,” KHM Travel established a set of Core Values .

Our top Core Value is People First , which encourages team members to treat others with respect, honor, and dignity. Whether we are meeting with agents at one of our live events or speaking with them over the phone, email, or on live chat, we strive to approach every interaction with People First in mind.

Each of the other Core Values is built on and tied together by this foundation. For instance, Loyalty is expressed in our dedication to faithfully serving our families, team members, agents, and communities. Integrity encourages us to build trust, both individually and as a company, by presenting ourselves in an honest and trustworthy way.

For example, we value Authenticity and strive to be sincere and straightforward, without sacrificing our Professionalism . Along with Positive Attitude , Professionalism helps us to foster a productive, yet caring environment, both internally and externally.

As we are a business built on helping other businesses succeed, we are driven to help others achieve Prosperity , economically and personally. This ties directly in to Generosity , and we feel fortunate enough to have the opportunity to invest our time, talents, and resources in others. We extend these values beyond ourselves, to able to impact those we are tied to as global Community . In other words, we know we are not in this alone.
