In the morning, you can relax with the aromas of freshly baked bread and coffee beans from the surrounding Andes in the hotel dining room. Your guide will meet you at the hotel in the afternoon for an immersive tour into the City of Kings. At the Convento de San Francisco, you will find a shining yellow facade that hides the catacombs of the city’s first cemetery. Your guide will take you into the cool ambiance of the maze of narrow halls below the monastery, where approximately 10,000 people were buried.

Lima - Explore Pachacamac Ruins and the Larco Museum

Your guide will take you to the Pachacamac ruins after breakfast to discover the culture and architectural wonders that date back to the 8th century. The temple was dedicated to the sun god and features adobe walls that are shaped like a pyramid. The multicolored walls retain hints of grand frescoes, including an image of a fish. The pyramid was an important pilgrimage destination in pre-Columbian Peru. At the Larco Museum, you will view one of the largest collections of ancient Peruvian treasures. The impressive gallery displays over 45,000 artifacts that span more than 5,000 years of history.

Sacred Valley - Traverse Pisac Market and Ruins

Your private transfer will escort you to the airport in the morning for your flight to Cusco. Your guide will meet you upon arrival and lead you into the historical and spiritual ambiance of Pisac. The town will shine with exuberant colors from the famous market where members of the surrounding communities showcase their woven creations. The aromas of roasted chicken will fade beneath the scent of llama wool and bright dyes. Your guide will lead you to the citadel where Inca ruins fill the triangular plateau. Here, the agricultural terraces sweep across the steep foothills and create graceful curves.

Sacred Valley - Visit Towns and Ruins of the Sacred Valley

After breakfast, your guide will escort you on a private tour of the fascinating towns in the Sacred Valley, beginning with Moray. The scent of grass and crisp air will sweep across the famous terraces for which the town is known. The landscaped features date back to the Inca and are known for possessing a temperature difference of up to 27 degrees Fahrenheit between the top and bottom tier. After visiting the salt pans of Maras, you will reach the dramatic ruins of Ollantaytambo. The fortress looms above the surrounding valley at 9,160 feet above sea level.

Machu Picchu - Travel to Machu Picchu for a Private Tour

This morning, you will board the train to Machu Picchu at Ollantaytambo station. The Vistadome’s glass ceiling will offer you a view of the landscape as you pass beneath snow-capped peaks and lush cloud forests. Your guide will lead you on a private tour of the renowned Lost City of the Incas at Machu Picchu upon your arrival. The city is located at 7,972 feet above sea level. The Temple of the Sun was used for tribute and offerings, and it crowns the plateau with granite stone and a large door with two windows.

Cusco - Explore Machu Picchu Trails before Reaching Cusco

You will return to Machu Picchu in the morning to explore the greater archeological site at your leisure. Here, you will discover the beauty along the Machu Picchu Mountain Trek. The route offers wide walkways that are nestled between the surrounding mountains. The view will give way to the base of the mountain with steep steps that narrow along the descent, which connect the ridge to the summit for breathtaking views of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and the surrounding Putucusi Mountains. You will take the train to Cusco, where your private transfer will escort you to the comforts of your luxurious hotel.

Cusco - Delight in Colonial Cusco

The scent of rich chocolate and delicious local coffee will fill the dining room of your hotel at breakfast. After spending the morning at your leisure, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby for a walking tour of Cusco’s colonial history. The cobblestone streets and winding staircase that connect the city center will lead you to the Plaza de Armas and San Pedro Market. At the Palace of the Archbishop, your guide will point out the 12-angled stone. The archeological artifact is a national heritage object due to its unique composition that reflects the Inca’s advanced knowledge of stonework and construction.

Santiago - Transfer to Vibrant Santiago, Chile

Santiago is a vibrant capital city pressed against the foothills of the Andes Mountains. The ambiance of art and culture sweeps through the streets beneath the skyscraper and looming snow-capped peaks with the central plazas that date back to the mid-16th century. Your private transfer will greet you at Arturo Merino Benitez Airport and escort you to the comfort of your accommodation. Your tour will lead you through the city for insight into the history and culture of Chile, which is embodied in the mural that decorates the Universidad de Chile metro station, spanning more than 6,458 square feet.

Santiago - Delight in seaside Valparaiso and a Wine Tour

Your guide will escort you to the coastal city of Valparaiso in the morning. The sea breeze will carry a briny aroma to the foothills. As you explore the city, you can visit the home of poet Pablo Neruda, who drew inspiration from the water. You can enjoy the views of the active harbor and preserved 1950s furniture that decorates the rooms. In the charming landscape of a celebrated vineyard, you can bask in the panoramic views of the vines and mountains as you sample a selection of wines to find notes of cherry with hints of cedar in the Syrah.

Hanga Roa - Travel to Easter Island

The complex aromas of coffee will filter through Santiago in the morning from the coffee shops that serve specialty blends. After breakfast, your private transfer will take you to the airport for your flight to Easter Island. After landing at Mataveri International Airport, you will reach the luxuries of your hotel and have the remainder of the day at your leisure. The island possesses a mystical allure as one of the most isolated destinations in the world nearly 2,300 miles away from Santiago. You can stroll through Hanga Roa as the scent of the sea drifts through the streets.

Hanga Roa - Discover the Treasures of Easter Island

You will embark on a private tour in the morning to reach the caldera of Rano Kau volcano. The ancient crater is over 2.5 million years old and possesses a diameter that reaches nearly one mile long. The crater lake will glisten with a pristine blue before you visit the ceremonial village of Orongo. Tortora reeds will fill the nearby bog as you wander along the dramatic landscape that is decorated with houses of overlapping stone slabs. Soil and grass cover the arched roofs, and at Ahu Akivi, you will find seven moai facing the sea and looking toward the setting sun.

Hanga Roa - Revel in Easter Island Culture

Your culture and history tour of Easter Island will continue at the white sands of Anakena. The site acted as the landing spot for the first king and, today, hosts two important archeological destinations. Ahu Ature Huke is considered the first moai to be reestablished on a pedestal. At Ahu Nau Nau, you will find the moai decorated with characteristic topknots. You will continue to Akahanga, where the breeze sweeps across the windswept grass. The 15 moai on a platform represents the largest monolithic monument in Eastern Polynesia. The surrounding cliffs and lapping waves will create a majestic ambiance.

Hanga Roa - Free Day on Easter Island

With a day at your leisure on Easter Island, you can discover the treasures beyond the mysterious archeological features. For a unique exploration of the island, you can enjoy a snorkeling tour to uncover the abundant wildlife in the surrounding coral beds. At Anakena Beach, you can relax beneath the fragrant coconut palms and dig your toes into the soft white sands. You will find calm water as you discover the splendid visibility that reaches up to 196 feet. The rocky seafloor will give way to images of bright coral and passing butterflyfish.

Hanga Roa - Depart for Home

In the morning, the aroma of sugarcane and plantains will fill the dining room of your hotel. You will find delicious local staples that are symbolic of the island culture and Polynesian heritage. The sunlight will spread over the island and highlight the diverse beauty of the secluded destination, once again revealing the mystical statues and the captivating active lifestyle. After breakfast, your private transfer will meet you at the hotel and escort you to the airport. Arrival to Aguas Calientes and start your guided visit of the most spectacular ancient city in the world. This fabulous city contains houses, temples, warehouses, a large central square; and all connected by narrow roads and steps that are surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side. After the tour, free time to enjoy this spiritual wonder.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight to Lima and take the international flight to Santiago. Arrival in Santiago de Chile, reception and transfer to your hotel.

City tour of Santiago. Enjoy a visit of the different neighborhoods of Santiago. We start with a scenery tour in Providencia and the parks of this district. We then move on to Historical Downtown, where you will have a chance to see Santiago's traditional architecture. Our first visit will be to the Santa Lucía hill, the site where the conqueror Pedro De Valdivia founded Santiago in the year 1541. From the top of the hill, you will have a panoramic view of the city, while enjoying the hill's vegetation and the architecture of Hidalgo's Castle.

After breakfast, a full day visit to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar, lying on the coast of Chile. The trip will take you through the wine growing region of Casa Blanca Valley before arriving to the coast. Valparaiso is the largest port in South America but with a small town feel in the town centre. There is an interesting funicular railway and some marvelous views of the distant Andean Mountain range. The tour continues onto the up market resort town of Vina del Mar. Return to Santiago

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight to Puerto Montt. Transfer from the airport in Puerto Montt to your hotel in Puerto Varas, on the shore of Lake Llanquihue. Return to your hotel.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight to Buenos Aires. Reception and transfer to your hotel.

After breakfast, a city tour of perhaps the most cosmopolitan city in South America. Most of the population is of European descent and the city is reminiscent of Paris. It is situated on the Rio de la Plata, and as its name suggests, it is the city of good winds. The tour will include a visit to the Plaza de Mayo, the hub of the city centre and where many public buildings such as the Catedral Metropolitana can be found. At the east end, you will find the Casa Rosada presidential palace with the famous balcony from which Juan and Evita Peron greeted the masses. You shall also visit La Boca, Buenos Aires' most colourful neighbourhood. San Telmo, just a few blocks south of Plaza de Mayo is the artist's quarter, what some believe to be Buenos Aires' most interesting feature. Avisit to the Recoleta cemetery before returning to your hotel.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight to Puerto Iguazu. Transfer to your hotel. The Argentinean side of Iguazu allows for a close appreciation. Set in a subtropical rain forest reserve of over 180,000 hectares, Iguazu is home to jaguar, puma, caiman and over 400 species of bird. The tour will also include the Aventura ride, an exhilarating boat ride on the Parana River, heading towards the Iguazu falls themselves. Return to your hotel.

Today you will cross the border into Brazil for an excursion to appreciate a wider view of the falls. The falls lie on the three borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Transfer to the airport for the flight to Rio de Janeiro. Transfer to your hotel.

After breakfast, a visit of the "marvelous city" including a sightseeing tour to Sugar Loaf Mountain. A two-stage cable car takes you to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain where you will enjoy a splendid view of Rio, Copacabana Beach, and Guanabara Bay. Visit to the beaches before returning to your hotel.

After breakfast, a half day visit to Corcovado, the mountain home to the world famous, Christo de Redentor statue. Take the train to the top for a magnificent 360° panoramic view of Rio. Return to your hotel.

After breakfast, transfer out.

Culture and customs.

With the Andes on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, Chile’s geographic isolation has resulted in a distinct national identity. About 95 per cent of Chileans share a mixture of European (predominantly Spanish) and indigenous ancestry.

For many, being Chilean often means celebrating huaso (Chilean cowboy) culture, going to rodeos, dancing the cueca (Chile’s national dance performed in traditional huaso clothing), eating empanadas and drinking pisco.

Spanish is the national language, though Chileans tend to speak fast, drop consonants and litter their speech with a healthy dose of chilenismos (Chilean slang).

Life is focused around the family with frequent get-togethers to share food in good company. More than half of Chileans are Roman Catholics and there is a growing number (estimated at 25 per cent of the population) who are ‘unaffiliated’ – choosing not to identify with a religion.

While many Chileans are traditional in their views, the younger generations are challenging cultural norms and politics is often a passionate topic among youths.

Geography and environment

Chile is a land of quirky geographical characteristics, most noticeably its incredible length. Measuring in at over 4600km long, yet only 430km wide, Chile covers a massive geographic scale that includes a variety of landscapes and an impressive coastline.

Straddled by the epic Andes, this gigantic mountain range acts as a natural border with  Argentina  in the east, while the Pacific Ocean - including the remote Chilean territory of Easter Island - forms the western coastline.

The capital and largest city, Santiago, lies inland, roughly in the center of the country. Further north, Chile shares a border with  Peru  and  Bolivia , as well as the largest section of the parched Atacama Desert, one of the world’s driest places.

South of Santiago, Chile unfolds into the wilderness playground of Patagonia - a largely uninhabited, prehistoric landscape brimming with forests and enormous glaciers.

Festivals and events

Chile has a busy events calendar with many festivals to celebrate the diversity of its culture throughout the year. Here are some of the country's biggest events:

1. Fiesta de la Tirana

Each July, the quiet streets of La Tirana morph into a massive dance floor filled with masked performers acting out the ‘Dance of the Devils’. Blending indigenous culture with Catholic tradition, some say the festival honours the Virgin Mary, while others an indigenous warrior princess.

Either way, it's a fascinating experience seeing the frenetic dancing, fireworks and tasty foods that make up Chile’s largest religious festival.

2. Festival de la Vendimia (Wine Harvest Festival)

Chile’s wine regions take it up a notch in March and April when weekend-long festivals celebrate the harvest and rural life. Think cowboys, country food and folk dancing. With so many wine regions it can be hard to know which festival to check out, though Curico Valley’s festival is the longest running and widely regarded as the biggest.

3. Fiestas Patrias (Independence Day)

As a fiercely patriotic nation – and one that loves a good party – Fiestas Patrias is a big deal. Each September, flags are hung and the aroma of barbeque fills the air as people eat, drink, dance and celebrate. Look for a fonda (huge tent party) and join locals as they party into the wee hours of the morning.

4. Tapati Rapa Nui (Easter Island Tapati Festival)

Get a glimpse of Easter Island’s vibrant Polynesian heritage at this spectacular two-week festival in February. It features dancing, chanting, carving competitions, body painting, a string figure (kai kai) contest, and so much more.

Food and drink

Chilean cuisine is all about seasonal produce and simplicity. Potatoes, corn and quinoa are staple ingredients in many traditional dishes, including pastel de choclo (corn pie) and humitas (steamed corn pudding wrapped in corn husks).

Chile’s extensive coastline provides a wide array of seafood. Visit one of the country’s many marisquerias (fish restaurants) to try picorocos (barnacles) or erizos (sea urchin). Most places serve fish grilled with a little seasoning. Ceviche is also a dietary mainstay.

Chileans also love their meat. Like in Brazil and Argentina, a leisurely asado (barbeque) is a cherished tradition. Held either in a backyard or a specially equipped park, an asado can stretch for hours and always features lots of grilled beef, pork, sausage, lamb and Chilean wine. If you don’t manage to snag an invitation to an asado from a local, head to a parrillada instead – a restaurant that serves grilled meats.

Here are some must-try foods in Chile:

1. Mote con huesillo

Dried peaches and husked wheat are stewed in a sugary syrup to create Chile’s favorite summertime treat. The perfect reward after a long day of exploring.

2. Pastel de choclo

A hearty Andean pie of ground beef or chicken and vegetables, topped with pureed sweet corn is a local favorite.

The perfect dish to warm your bones on a cold day, cazuela is a thin stew of chicken or beef with corn on the cob, potatoes, pumpkin and noodles. Do as the locals and drink the broth first.

Things to buy in Chile

Most towns will have a local market where you can pick up handmade souvenirs. You'll also find large shopping centers in big cities. Head to Avenida Alonso de Córdova in Santiago for boutique and luxury stores and trendy bars.

Keep in mind that haggling isn't part of Chilean culture, so prices are usually fixed, and most markets and street vendors deal only with cash. Stores are typically open between 10 am and 9 or 10 pm Monday through Friday.

Many stores are only open during the morning on Saturdays and are closed on Sundays, though these hours can vary in tourist areas. Shops in smaller cities also tend to close for lunch and take a siesta between 1 and 5 pm.

Here are a few things to buy in Chile.

1. Alpaca clothing

Sweaters, gloves, scarves and other items made from alpaca wool are a South American specialty. Both unique and practical, alpaca wool does a good job of blocking out high altitude chill.

2. Lapis lazuli jewellery

The Romans considered it an aphrodisiac, and Cleopatra was said to powder it for use as an eyeshadow. Lapis lazuli has quite a history, but these days the semiprecious indigo-blue stone is found only in Chile and Afghanistan.

Cheaper here than lapis sold abroad, it's still a somewhat pricey purchase. The general rule of thumb is the deeper the color, the better the quality, and always shop at reputable stores to ensure you’re not sold a fake.

3. Mapuche silverware

Indigenous women of the Lake District traditionally wore handcrafted silver earrings, headdresses and other pieces of jewelry as a sign of wealth. Dramatic silver pieces are still made by Mapuche women in this region today.

You might recognize the grape-based brandy known as pisco from Peru, but Chile shares the claim too. The battle of the birthplace of pisco has been going on for centuries.

Must-visit places in Chile

With so much on offer in Chile, from glacier trekking to wine tasting, it can be hard to choose which places to visit. Here are  a few must-visit places  to consider.

1. Santiago

Santiago is Chile's bustling capital. Set within a circle of snow-capped mountains, this city is a stone's throw from outdoor adventures (if you can ever leave, that is). From traditional European buildings in artsy neighborhoods to a brilliant food scene and thriving nightclubs, Santiago has it all.

2. Valparaiso

With its colorful buildings, mural-filled streets and labyrinthine laneways lined with cafes and galleries, Valparaiso  is arguably Chile's most creative city. Sip pisco sours on a rooftop in the historic center, rub shoulders with local artists or visit a restaurant credited with the invention of chorrillana.

3. Patagonia

Chile and Argentina both stake a claim over  Patagonia  — and it's no wonder when the region is  this  beautiful. Think rolling grasslands flanked by snow-clad peaks, remarkably blue lakes, beech forests and huge glaciers. Patagonia was practically made for adventuring.

4. San Pedro de Atacama

Welcome to the driest town on earth. San Pedro de Atacama is also home to some of Chile's most dramatic landscapes, from hissing geysers to imposing volcanoes and sprawling salt flats. Go sandboarding in the dunes, explore the stunning Moon Valley or admire one of the most impressive night skies you've ever seen.

When is the best time to visit Chile?

Chile’s substantial length ensures that the climate is incredibly varied, and the best time to visit depends on your chosen destinations.

Summer (December to March) is possibly the best time to visit Chile, as the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine and lakes region are reasonably warm. However, the trade-off is that the Atacama Desert can be very hot during this time. Summer is also festival time, so it's a good chance to experience Chile’s unique culture.

For the central and northern regions, autumn is a comfortable time to visit, but note that it can be quite cold in the south, especially at night.

Snowfall is common during winter (July to September) in the south of the country, so this is the ideal time for a skiing or snowboarding holiday.

Is tipping customary in Chile?

It's customary to lea ve an extra 10% on top of your restaurant bill if you've had great service. The same goes for tipping porters and other service workers. Feel free to leave spare change or tip extra if you're particularly impressed with the service.

What is the internet access like in Chile?

Wi-fi access is widely available in cafes, bars and restaurants in cities and tourist areas. However, you may struggle to find wi-fi in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Chile?

Cell phone coverage is good in Chile’s cities, but may not be available in rural and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Chile?

Toilets in Chile will vary depending on what area you are traveling in. Flushable, western-style toilets are common in the cities, large hotels, malls, and clubs but more modest squat toilets are the standard in rural areas and while camping. Either way, carrying a supply of toilet paper and soap is a good idea, as these aren’t always available in public toilets.

What will it cost for a...?

Chile's unit of currency is the Chilean Peso (CLP). Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Public transport in Santiago = 700 CLP
  • Cappacino in a café = 2500 CLP
  • A pint of beer in a bar = 2900 CLP
  • Simple lunch = 7500 CLP
  • Dinner in a mid-range restaurant = 20,000 CLP

Can I drink the water in Chile?

Tap water is generally safe to drink in Chile, though some may get an upset stomach from the different mineral content. If you have a delicate stomach, you may want to opt for filtered water to avoid this. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, bring a reusable water bottle that can be filled with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Chile?

Major credit cards are widely accepted in Chile’s large cities and towns but may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as family restaurants and market stalls in small towns and rural areas. Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting these parts in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Chile?

ATMs are found widely throughout Chile, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic in most areas. Some smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so prepare for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561ft ( 2000m) regardless of age, gender, or fitness level. Santiago is well below this elevation, but travelers heading to San Pedro de Atacama and the northern and central Andes might experience symptoms of high altitude. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip, particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Chile?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Chile but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4–6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Chile a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Chile is a relatively hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Though traditionally a very Catholic and conservative nation, attitudes are slowly changing. Same-sex marriage was legalized in 2015 and people are now more open about their sexuality.

Santiago hosts an annual gay pride parade and has an active gay scene, particularly in Barrio Bellavista. Beach resorts such as Vina del Mar also have a number of gay clubs. You may find that attitudes are less liberal outside of big cities.

Transgender rights and public attitudes are also developing. The Chilean government signed a bill into law in 2019 to allow people aged 18 and over to change their legal gender and name on Chile's Civil Registry. Teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18 can also do so in court.

The park is home to four different vegetation zones: Patagonian steppe, Pre-Andean shrubland, Magellanic subpolar forests, and the Andean desert – throughout which you will find unique landscapes, with turquoise lakes, lagoons, waterfalls, and impressive glaciers. Archeological proof indicates that the zone was once permanently inhabited during millenaries. (from the 6th to the 5th millenary BCE), by people that belonged to the ancient hunting tribes of the pampas, Tehuelches’ ancestors. We have indeed found signs of presence along the Sarmiento Lake and Serrano River banks. After these primitive hunters came the Aonikenk Nomads between 1500 and 1870, who were Tehuelches living south of the Chubut River. The Tehuelches always had a very extended knowledge of the mountain-range that they would call Paine or Carrón, and for which they had deep respect.

The landscape is a unique mix of green areas, covering the hills and mountains, and of turquoise water that seems to blend into the impressive glaciers. During the cruise, you will be able to see sea lions and cormorants. Then, you will top and get off of the boat for a short 1km walk, across a forest of native trees, to reach the bottom of the Serrano Glacier, and appreciate this magnificent work of nature.

First of all I would like to express my deep gratitude to main organizer of trip Daniel and all guides of the company!!!

Our agent Daniel was extremely helpful and great building the itinerary. We loved working with him! He was so fantastic. Peru, Argentina, Patagonia, Rainforest, and Chile all went well. Brazil was a little bit messy and the organization was disappointing in comparison to the rest. The hotel in Rio was absolutely horrible and I had mentioned that before and nothing was changed. We booked months in advance so it being a long holiday weekend should not make a difference. The hotel should have been changed way before as I asked. It was below standard and should not be an option because it was old, dirty, with bugs and run down and in a very unsafe location. For Manaus, our driver was late and no one communicated it to us. I had to reach out and we didn’t have a lot of information. Also, there should have been some options to do the meeting of the waters tour in the rainforest we had plenty of time and we ended up scheduling it last minute because the agent there (Nathalia) didn’t include it and couldn’t get us on a boat. The local agent worked with us instead. It would have been better to have everything paid for and done in advance. So overall, Brazil team could have done a better job. The rest of the teams in the other countries were great!

Overall experience with Latin Discoveries was good, dealing with Daniel and other team members via WhatsApp was pretty quick and easy. However, there were couple of instances which i believe can be improved upon. 1. once i had approved the proposal and payment was made, I had to send couple of emails asking if the payment was received or not. 2. the travel books came in as seperate for each country, however for ease of understanding if an overall summary would have been given it would have been good. 3. the travel book came pretty close to our travel so not much time to review and question some of the timing (flight times etc.)
