Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Games

Everyone is stuck inside at the moment so now is the time to dust off the old Playstation, Xbox or computer and get the Tiger Woods PGA Tour games back into your staying inside rotation.

The series of immensely successful games began in 1990 and was simply called PGA Tour Golf. Several editions were made over the next few years and then the decision was made to put Tiger Woods on the cover for the first time on the 1999 game.

EA Sports reportedly paid $10 million for the rights to use Tiger's name and likeness. As a result the game would then be rebranded to be called Tiger Woods PGA Tour, followed by the year.

Which game did you play the most? Which was your favourite? And should they make a present day version? Let ys know via our social media channels.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Games

The 1999 game was not released without a hitch as an employee of Electronic Arts snuck a precursor episode of South Park called Jesus vs Santa onto the Playstation disc. This could be watched if the disc was put into a computer and selected ZZDUMMY.DAT with the media player.

The 2000 game received mixed reviews with many complaining about the difficult and inconsistent putting however a number of features proved popular, such as the nine different Tour professionals you could play with or against, the overall graphics, and several different formats. The Course Architect was also a very good feature in which you could construct your own course.

The next year EA Sports introduced a create your own player feature which seemed to go down well but the lack of Tour players and different courses held the game back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVIPZ1_oobI

2002 expanded off the back of those criticisms as lots more players were added as well as courses like Pebble Beach, TPC Sawgrass, and Royal Birkdale. The game received excellent reviews which ensured success in later years.

In 2003 little was done by EA Sports in terms of playability, it played pretty much exactly the same as 2002. But they did introduce little tweaks and new elements to really improve the product.

The sound of the game improved massively with improved commentary, more background noise like waves and birds, and also there was more emphasis put on animation from the players.

One of the things I remember most was how the game kind of went out of its way to compliment you and make it an incentive to improve your player with stats like top performances, personal bests, average scores, tour trophies, scenario medals.

tiger woods pga tour 2014 courses

2004 was the game I played religiously more than any other. There was a big expansion in the number of courses you could play such as Bay Hill Club and Lodge, St. Andrews Links (Old Course),  Torrey Pines (South Course), TPC at Sawgrass (Stadium Course), TPC at Scottsdale (Stadium Course), Princeville Resort, Kapalua Plantation, Pinehurst #2, Bethpage Black, Spyglass Hill, Poppy Hills, Sahalee Country Club along with several fantasy courses.

The Game Face feature also expanded what you could create in terms of your own player and for the first time you could do a proper PGA Tour season as you enter four-day tournaments.

All the usual courses were on this game but the fantasy courses really took it up a notch with Greek Isles, Emerald Dragon or Paradise Cove.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaGSpUhlSPg

Also the Legend Pursuit was a brilliant feature - you had to go up against a variety of characters and tour professionals to earn the honour of going up against one of the legends in the game who were Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Ben Hogan and Gary Player. Beat them, and you could then go up against Sunday Tiger Woods.

Another cool new feature was Tiger Proofing which allowed you to redesign courses to make them easier or harder once you unlocked them.

In 2006 the controls were tinkered with, with the right analog stick being the shape stick to allow you to fade or draw the ball in a different way. The caddie feature also came in but once you got good at the game you didn't really listen to them.

Much of the game remained the same in 2007 although there was improvement in the graphics. They introduced Riviera, The National, The K Club, and the Ocean course at Kiawah Island too.

tiger woods pga tour 2014 courses

Once again there was little to differentiate this game from the previous years iteration.

The 2009 controls were a lot more forgiving than 2008's and Hank Haney was also added to the game to help coach you.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf Games

The game with Tiger's iconic 2008 US Open celebration on the cover was another I played a lot. The main thing I remember was the expansion in equipment and costumes you could use.

2011 was the first game to feature Tiger alongside another golfer, this time Rory McIlroy .

tiger woods pga tour 2014 courses

The one we all had been waiting for as Augusta National was one of the courses you could play on the game.

Chairman at the time Billy Payne said "EA Sports, Tiger Woods and the PGA Tour have developed an extremely successful franchise that responds to one of the popular entertainment choices of kids today. We hope our inclusion will foster an appreciation for the history and traditions of the Masters and inspire the next generation of golfers." All the proceeds went to the Masters Tournament Foundation.

I remember how excited I was by this as I realistically knew I would never play Augusta. To many, this was as close as you were going to get.

tiger woods pga tour 2014 courses

EA Sports put the cover to a fan vote in terms of who would go alongside Tiger. The two most popular selections were Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler.

It also had a Kinect feature on the Xbox 360 where you could swing and the game would pick it up.

The Collectors edition also had has a Green Jacket presentation ceremony, five additional courses than the standard edition, and Augusta National’s Par 3 course and Tournament Practice Facility.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 game, players can not only take on the stars of today, such as Woods and McIlroy , but also the shining lights of yesteryear.

In a new ‘Legends of the Majors' game mode, players could take on the late Seve Ballesteros, the big three of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player, as well as American legends Lee Trevino, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and golf's first international superstar, Bobby Jones.

Players could battle it our with these legends in all four Majors, perhaps taking on Jones in the US Open, Nicklaus in the Masters or Ballesteros in The Open.

This was the last game in the series with Tiger Woods in the name as in 2015 the game became Rory McIlroy PGA Tour 2015.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 Review

A trip back to golf's past moves Tiger Woods 14 into the future with some great new features, but the core game on the links holds pat.

By Brett Todd on March 28, 2013 at 6:00PM PDT

Bigger, not necessarily better. That, in a nutshell, is Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14. After last year's speed bump of a game that added virtually nothing to the long-running golf franchise save some enhanced swing mechanics and Toddler Tiger, the developers at EA Tiburon packed a lot of goodies into this new release. While the core game buried deep underneath the shiny new wrapping remains very similar to its predecessors from 2011 and 2012, it's now harder to complain because of catchy new features like the history-lesson Legends of the Majors, all four major tourneys for the first time, LPGA support, and even nifty frills like night golf. This isn't the complete revamp that the aging game could use, but all of the additions freshen things up just enough to make it worth a buy.

No Caption Provided

Most of the experience on the links in Tiger Woods 14 is similar to that offered last year. This is a fairly typical sports sequel, with just some minor tweaks to game mechanics. Shot shaping is probably the biggest addition to the standard gamepad scheme introduced last year. Now, in order to pull off those nifty fades and draws that look so easy when the PGA pros do them on TV every Sunday, you have to push and pull the right stick diagonally. This is a more substantial addition to the game than you might think, because it's tricky to do this instead of the typical pull-back, push-forward routine. You get more of a sense of accomplishment now when you pull a ball around trees onto the fairway.

Difficulty has been tweaked, and putting is more finicky this year. Where last year's model refined gamepad putting to the point where it was too easy, here everything is dialed back to make things a little too hard. Putting becomes more comfortable with practice, but it's still difficult to read greens and to tell how much mustard to put on the ball. If you want an even greater challenge, you can try the new simulation control setting that removes all of the menu crutches, such as the swing path and the putt preview grid. This makes the game brutally tough, although it certainly provides a lot of motivation to players who have mastered the stock game.

No Caption Provided

Other than the above changes, the controls are virtually identical to those in last year's game. PlayStation 3 Move support remains excellent, continuing with the subtle refinements seen in 2012. Sensitivity and accuracy are dead-on. The only problem is the size of the Move controller, which is just too small to give the sensation that you're swinging a golf club. Since the weight isn't there, you can find yourself off-balance more than you would be on a real course. With that said, it's impressive that the game is so close to real life that this weight consideration is even noticeable.

The same cannot be said for Kinect support on the Xbox 360. It is still frustratingly tough to use Microsoft's motion-sensing peripheral. The camera doesn't track your movements accurately enough, and the absence of anything in your hands makes the swinging motion feel deeply weird. Even the menu resists ease of use, refusing to recognize your input so regularly that you soon wind up waving your arms at the camera like you're warming up for the karaoke version of "YMCA."

No Caption Provided

Game features are where Tiger Woods 14 shines. The new Legends of the Majors mode of play is a fantastic trip through the modern history of pro golf. You start way back in 1873 with Young Tom Morris at the Old Course at St. Andrews, and then follow a line of key events in golf history right to the present day. History buffs should enjoy everything here, from the sepia-tone graphics in the oldest challenges to the use of authentic clothing and clubs. Little touches have been thrown in to give everything added flavor, like silent-movie-styled intro screens in 1919. A number of top golf legends are present as well, including giants like Sam Snead, Bobby Jones, and both Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer in their primes.

There are some licensing issues with courses and players that cause some anachronisms with the historic challenges, though. But this actually adds to the charm, since modern players in century-old garb provide a fun past-meets-present feel. The only serious negative is the absence of the 1934 Masters course at Augusta in the basic version of the game. This course offers a completely different layout than the modern version of Augusta, so it's a must-play that ties in beautifully with the Legends mode. Its therefore a shame that it must be purchased separately as downloadable content, or as part of the $10 extra The Masters Historic Edition.

Career mode has been marginally beefed up. You can now create a female pro and play in the LPGA, and all players of both sexes have swing style profiles that determine if they play a power or control game, though this distinction only adds a barely-noticeable boost to your default stat. Adding support for the women's side of pro golf is a great touch and is long overdue. All four PGA major events are in the game this year for the first time, too, so your career can now run through the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, and Open. This, along with nearly two dozen other PGA tournaments, really fills out career play.

No Caption Provided

You even qualify for the pro tour by following in the exact same steps as real-world wannabes. Players still advance as they always have, through the earning of XP and coins used to buff skills and buy new gear and clothing. This system is more restrictive this year, though, with just about everything locked at the start of the game. There aren't even any clothing choices at the beginning of a career. With every accoutrement locked down, the pressure is on from the very first moments of play to buy this stuff with real-world currency.

Online options have been increased and enhanced. Connected tourneys let 24 players go at it simultaneously with no need to wait for others to shoot. Other players' shots are shown by their arcs in real time as you play, so you're competing against benchmarks set by opponents. Country club memberships have been nudged up to 100, and there are more opportunities to voice-chat with fellow members while playing matches. Players connected online can also take advantage of live weather, so you can experience real-world conditions at the course of your choice at any time of the day or night. This is a great touch that gives matches a "you are there" feeling.

No Caption Provided

One area hard to quibble about in Tiger Woods 14 is the look of the game. It's an incremental improvement over last year's game, sure, but the graphics are better than they have ever been before. More attention has been paid to finer details. You can now start rounds at various times of day to watch the sun rise and set, and even head out for rounds in the middle of the night with luminescent balls. Golfing under a summer moon is amazingly atmospheric, an added touch that makes the game's 20 courses (which you can almost double by buying DLC) look completely different from their daytime counterparts. The only real weirdness comes with the crowd galleries in tourneys; they seem to be composed of people from the different eras represented in Legends of the Majors. Nothing like having guys in fedoras and women in what look to be flapper dresses cheering your putts in 2013.

Animations are fantastic. Swings are fluid, and shot reactions are realistic. All of the two dozen or so golfers in the game look and move just like their real-life counterparts, giving the proceedings a real TV broadcast vibe. Audio isn't as noteworthy. Music is Muzak: relaxing and fitting, but hardly memorable. Jim Nantz and David Feherty recycle lines and fall silent a lot of the time. The game doesn't know how to handle play-by-play and commentary for events when you are playing your home-rolled golfer, so the commentators tend to shut up during key moments. More shot-specific lines would be welcome, both to provide some advice and to keep the broadcast atmosphere rolling. Even added comments about ball lie and how greens are breaking would be much appreciated.

No Caption Provided

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 is a classic case of a game sequel giving you what you need, but not necessarily all you want. Even though you might be looking for more ground-breaking changes to improve how the game plays on the tees, fairways, and greens after a couple of years of holding the line, there are enough new features here to keep you interested. The enthralling Legends of the Majors, new tournaments, the lengthy list of courses, LPGA support, and even the nifty night golf will wrap up your attention for many hours. This isn't the next big step for golf games, but adding quantity to the already existing quality of the simulation down on the links makes for another very good Tiger.

  • Leave Blank
  • Enthralling Legends of the Majors mode depicts over a century of golfing history
  • Sepia-tone graphics and authentic old-time clubs for historic moments
  • Adds depth with LPGA Tour, night golf, and quick tournaments
  • Shot shaping gives you more control with draws and fades
  • The core game shows little evolution over previous years
  • Inconsistent commentary

Introduction

Golf. It’s a game for stuffy old men or a venerable, relaxing pastime – depending largely on whether you play it or not.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 is the latest in a long, venerable series of golf games. But like golf itself, some may find it a bit dull as not all that much has changed since 2012’s edition.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 – Courses and Features

A selling point of last year’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 was that it tracked the progress of Woods’s life, letting you play episodes from his golfing past as challenges. This year’s game takes a step back.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 3In-game screenshot of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 gameplay.

Starting in the mid 1800s and working up to the present day, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2014 offers around 60 challenges. These encompass some of the most memorable moments from the careers of the world’s most famous golfers. And, naturally, that includes a handful of Tiger Woods scenarios. They might involve a few crucial shots, or nine full holes.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14Screenshot of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 video game gameplay.

When shacked-up with the career mode, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 offers masses of content. As with so many EA Sports games, this is a title EA wants you to play until next year’s edition comes around.

Unlocks aren’t limited to courses, either. At the start of the game, your career golfers only have access to one set of clubs and one outfit. Others are unlocked as you play – and don’t expect to get your hands on the best gear within the first week. To unlock everything, you’ll need to put serious hours in to level up your career golfers.

In the career mode, your golfer earns experience points with every right move made. Birdies, shots that land on the fairway – any positive shot will be rewarded with a few points. A few hundred, then a few thousand, will earn you a level up. Get those thumbs prepped.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 – Gameplay

While some minor changes have been made to the game’s structure with the addition of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14’s historic mode, the way you play the game is more-or-less unchanged.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 4Screenshot of gameplay from Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 video game.

As with virtually any golf game, this mechanic is the final coda that follows picking where you want the ball to land, and having made any compensation for wind (and land contours when putting). And preceding these, you pick what sort of golfer you want to play as – perhaps the most important factor being whether you want to focus on power or accuracy.

Regardless of which character you pick, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 is a game that swings between deep satisfaction and controller-bashing frustration for all but those who have gained the muscle memory already mentioned to ace each and every swing. It doesn’t come all that quickly, especially when many shots stray from the “straight forward, straight back” swing.

Those with Kinect can also control their swing using the sensor, mimicking the moves of a real golfer.

There’s no altering the course of the ball mid-flight in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14, as if your golfer was pumping away at some massive bellows from the green. This is a relatively realistic golf title. And, true to life, it can be punishingly unforgiving at times. It’s all too easy to muck up a lead in an 18-hole course with a poor performance on a single hole.

And much as it may have raised our blood pressure over the last week, it’s probably exactly how Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 should be.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 – Graphics

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 2Screenshot of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 golf course gameplay.

There’s no such thing here. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 offers a day and night cycle, touted as one of the game’s top features, but there’s little inspiration to the visuals and environmental dynamics here.

When you’re not peering into a sunset on a cliff-bound course that looks out onto the sea, this is a drab-looking game. And it features plenty of flat, green holes. There are twenty Championship courses in the game in total.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 – Online Features

The Country Clubs of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 return in this “2014” edition, upping the number of online members per club from 25 to 100 and enriching them with chat and spectator modes. Their primary function is to let you play against real players, rather than AI ones, of course.

As with every change made in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14, the alterations are enriching in a minor way. They’re welcome, but not necessarily a reason to return to the series if your burned out on Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour is a more-of-the-same effort from EA Sports that keeps the great swing mechanics of its predecessor and adds an interesting historical challenge mode. If you tried last year’s version and didn’t get on with it, this year’s version won’t suddenly pull you in. And its graphical engine is starting to look seriously tired at points. However, at its heart is a rock-solid, rewarding golf game that will keep you busy for weeks, if not months.

The transformation that the Tiger Woods franchise has gone through this generation--not unlike that of the man himself--is astounding. What started as a slick-looking arcade-style golf game with simple mechanics has evolved into a meticulously designed labor of love that focuses on the best of the sport today as well as its storied past. In many ways, it symbolizes the top aspects of sports gaming in the waning years of the PS3/360 era--as well as one of its worst.

The difference between a Tiger game several years ago versus its latest incarnation is stark; a completely different mechanic that allows exponentially more shot-making opportunities is backed by the inclusion of all four major championships on the PGA Tour, a fully realized women’s tour, a new difficulty mode to challenge the best players, a bona fide historical mode that combines legendary players with old-timey equipment on wildly different courses, and an online social community that encourages play with and against friends. As recently as two years ago, none of these were present in any real capacity. In many ways, Tiger 14 feels like the ultimate fan service for longtime players of the franchise.

It’s impossible to ignore the elephant in the room, however. Even as the game comes jammed with content for the $60 price tag (or the special edition with a few more courses for $10 more), a staggering amount of expensive DLC in the form of additional courses also awaits. Even worse, any courses that were purchased last year do not count towards this season’s selections. If you were to purchase all of the courses, it’s conceivable you would come close to doubling your investment; considering that many of these courses are key to integral parts of the game, it feels unnecessary to demand so much from customers.

"In many ways, Tiger 14 feels like the ultimate fan service for longtime players of the franchise."

What is on the disc at launch is certainly impressive, though. In career mode--the heart of any Tiger game--you have the ability to tailor your golfer out of the gate to your preferred play style. Big hitters can choose Power players, while precise golfing surgeons can go in the direction of Control. The modified Total Swing Control mechanics provide instant feedback to your input, all of which is controlled with the left or right stick. That’s right--there’s no three-click method anymore. Everything is managed by moving the sticks up and down in time, with precise measurements that directly impact where your ball will go off the tee, fairway, rough, sand, or green. If you haven’t played Tiger in a while, be prepared to spend some time learning. It’s the best Tiger control set yet, but it takes some practice.

Legends of the Game is the newest mode, featuring all types of challenges set throughout golf’s history. Borrowing from NBA 2K13, the presentation will reflect the era; when you’re walking the courses of Scotland in the 19th century, sepia-toned hues awash the screen. As you move forward in time, presentations will change accordingly. While it’s an interesting feature, the much more impactful aspect of early eras is the different equipment being used. It forces you to take a different approach--obviously, you’re not nearly as long off the tee nor as accurate in rough spots--but more than anything will have you longing for current-day gear. By far the best aspect of the Legends mode is the carefully crafted men themselves, as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and many others have their distinct mannerisms beautifully captured.

For the first time ever, all four PGA Tour major championships are licensed and playable. This is simply huge for all fans; imagine if Madden didn’t have the Super Bowl, but rather a “Football Championship Game?” That’s no longer an issue, as the Masters, US Open, British Open, and PGA Championship, as wel as their respective courses, are in the game. As it has for several years now, Augusta permeates the experience of Tiger Woods; not only is the present-day course still a major attraction, but the famous Par 3 course and 1934 layout are also available. However, they are only on the premium Masters Historic Edition or as DLC.

"Tiger Woods 14 stands as a terrific example of a sports franchise that has continued to evolve itself in the direction its fans want it to go."

Online play also continues as a focal point, as Country Clubs--groups of friends that can congregate with aggregated stats and their own tournaments--are back and expanded this go-round. Entire communities sprung up around these Clubs last year, and it was a wise decision to boost their membership from 25 people to 100 for this season. While many players will never head into online golf, those that do have a way to find like-minded people with similar skill levels and desired experience--something all sports games could benefit from.

Tiger Woods 14 stands as a terrific example of a sports franchise that has continued to evolve itself in the direction its fans want it to go. Better mechanics, a deep historical mode, expanded online capabilities, and multi-gender careers highlight a huge game with much to offer its fans. However, it’s difficult to view its desire to exact even more money after purchase by offering enticing course content as payable DLC that directly impacts your ability to play core modes of the game as anything but questionable. If you go in with eyes wide open, chances are you’ll get exactly what you want out of Tiger this spring.

The definitive ranking of every Tiger Woods PGA Tour video game

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2004-2.png

Last August, the newest golf video game—PGA Tour 2K21—was released to the public, quickly becoming a hit among golf fans. While there had been a number of golf games released since the final iteration of the Tiger Woods video game series (in 2014), this was the first one that felt like a must-have, even without Woods' name on the box.

Seven months later, it was announced that Woods will in fact be back on the box. The 15-time major champion has inked a long-term deal with 2K , meaning he'll be returning to a console near you in the future. Rejoice, Cyber Tiger is back.

Of course, this news comes not long after Woods was in a single-car accident, one that has had him hospitalized ever since. Hopefully, Woods makes a full recovery and returns to the real course.

In the mean time, fans might get to relive their Tiger Woods glory days with Woods on an Xbox or Playstation again soon. That got us feeling nostalgic, so naturally we ranked all 16 iterations of the Tiger Woods franchise.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2006.png

2006 was a very weird year for all the EA Sports games. It was basically a lame duck year, as Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were now the systems to have. That left ’ 06 games in limbo for PS2 owners. Essentially, they were the same game as the year before with a couple of dumb, shiny new features. This was definitely the case for the “Tiger Woods” series as well. ’ 06 was as forgettable as they come.

Not all that different from 1999, which we’ll get to in a bit.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2002.png

The first year of the analog stick swing. Literally changed the game.

Honestly, 2003 was great, but what came after it makes its existence almost irrelevant.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2011.png

One of the big selling points for 2011 was the Ryder Cup mode, which flat out stunk. If you’re going to introduce an event like that into the game, one people hold very near and dear to their hearts, you’ve got to do it right. Funny enough, they introduced a pretty big event in the 2012 version of the game and nailed it.

This is purely out of respect for the franchise. Back to where it all began. Graphics? Terrible. Gameplay? Pretty good for PS1 in 1999! After years and years of playing with the analog stick, I can’t imagine playing a golf game where you had to time a meter like you’re kicking a field goal in Madden, but that’s the way it was. Kinda cool that it was exactly Tiger’s swing, but it didn’t feel like you were controlling him. Like I said, this is out of respect. By the way, something I just learned in doing research for this ranking was that there was an “Easter Egg” in the first 100,000 pressings of the game that played “Jesus vs. Santa,” a lost episode of South Park, which is on YouTube . I’m not kidding.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2001.png

The first “Tiger Woods” to be on PS2 had strong graphics and looked much more like the video games of today, as opposed to the Golden Tee-esque versions of 1999 and 2000. But this game still had the whack swing meter.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2009.png

I think the only thing separating ’ 09 from ’ 08 was Hank Haney being your coach in the game. The hell was that about?

Might as well just lump 2008 and 2009 together. Kind of forgotten years in the series in my opinion. The big jump on the new systems came in 2010. Although, none of the newest games have the Jesus shot:

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/05/200513-tiger-2007.png

This year was a massive step forward for the game in graphics and presentation, which makes sense given it was on the new systems. The real fun, however, was on the PS2 version, which I still own. There was a great team mode and some fun fantasy courses (I believe there was a course in Central Park in this game). But the best part was the addition of Riviera, a course I must have played a thousand times in that game. I guess that means I was “woke” before “woke” even existed, which is an elite level of woke-ness.

2010 was a hit for many reasons, and I think the Nintendo Wii version was the most popular of the bunch this year. But I had it for Xbox 360 and it was just delightful. First off, it was perhaps the best cover of the series, featuring Tiger’s famous, double-fisted U.S. Open celebration at Torrey Pines. That was a particularly nice touch because this was also the first year the U.S. Open was in the game, which coincided with the year it was back at Pebble Beach. Most importantly, this was Anthony Kim’s video-game debut, which was such a monumental occasion that there’s video of Tiger talking up Kim in one of the game ’ s trailers. This was probably the first time in the game’s history that I popped in the disc for the first time and played with someone other than Tiger, that someone being Kim.

Considering it wasn’t all that different from ’ 12, ’ 13 probably shouldn’t be this high, but sometimes more of the same is good. ’ 13 continued to focus on Augusta/The Masters, and the collector’s edition of the game even had a green-jacket ceremony. The two best additions to the game were Rory McIlroy, who was somehow left out of 2012 after being in 2010 and 2011, and Dustin Johnson. They both returned in ’ 13 and ’ 14 and were easily the second- and third-best players in the game behind TW. ’ 13 was the last year of Adam Scott and Justin Rose, who were each staples in the franchise for years. Course-wise, ’ 13 also made some great adds in Royal County Down, Royal Birkdale, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, Crooked Stick and PGA National.

Some may be scoffing at this being No. 4, which is fair. The first year of Augusta National and a “ Road to the Masters ” career mode in a video game should be worthy of No. 1, but the game only got better in its final two installments. With the introduction of Augusta also came the familiar voice of Jim Nantz, which no one complained about. ’ 12 also featured “The Caddie Experience,” which was cool for all of the first 10 minutes until it became redundant. New golfers included Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, the Molinari brothers, Zach Johnson and Bubba Watson. Sadly, this was the final year of Anthony Kim in the series. Pour one out, folks.

While the year we still haven’t gotten to is the game’s peak, 2005 is actually my favorite year of “Tiger Woods.” Gameplay was similar to the previous year, but there were welcome additions like the ability to adjust your stance/ball position to hit it higher or lower, and the ability to hit a punch and flop shot as well as chips and pitches. Putting was the same, with the same caddie advice and a back and through stroke once you read the putt, but this was the first year of “Tiger Vision,” which you got to use a handful of times per round with the use of the R1 button. By holding it down, your player would zoom in via a narrow cone (just like Tiger!) and see exactly where to aim the putt, turning a sure three-putt into a 76-foot eagle conversion.

Where this game separated itself was the legend mode, which allowed you to unlock Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and, of course, “Sunday” Tiger Woods. Trying to unlock all those greats, a sick soundtrack, and new courses like Harbour Town, Colonial, Sherwood, Greek Isles (fantasy course) and, my personal favorite, Couer d’Alene, where I once shot 48 with “Sunday” Tiger and … lost to a buddy of mine who shot 46 with Hogan, had me glued to this game for hours on end.

The last “Tiger Woods” game was, in my opinion, the best of the Xbox 360 era, though I won’t fault any ’ 12 or ’ 13 truthers for wanting those higher on this list. All three had Augusta National, which is enough to put them all in a tie for second, but ’ 14, the historic edition specifically, just did it for me. You could play Augusta National in 1934, reverse routing and all. New courses included Muirfield Village, Royal Troon and Oak Hill. In a brilliant nostalgia play, the game also brought back unlockable legends: Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Sam Snead. There were even different versions of them, like an early 1960s version Jack Nicklaus and a late 1970s Jack Nicklaus, and you could compete as all of them or against them in reenactments of their greatest career moments. The game’s best feature, however, was having all four major championships in career mode. Much like Michael Strahan, the “Tiger Woods” video game went out on top with the ’ 14 version.

I could just write “DMX. That is all” and drop the mic, but that wouldn’t fully describe this game’s GOATness. Everything about it was perfect right from the “Up in here” opening montage. There were 20 courses, the most in a Tiger Woods game to that point, including new additions like Bethpage Black and Sahalee, as well six fantasy courses (Black Rock Cove was a personal fave). 2004 also featured “Game Face,” which allowed you to create your player’s face to your exact liking, wrinkles and all. The gameplay wasn’t all that different from 2003, but it didn’t need to be. Once the analog stick was introduced, the gameplay was pretty much perfect in the PS2 era. But 2004 was its peak.

2024 Masters preview: Rory McIlroy’s quest, Tiger Woods’ streak, and LIV Golf vs. PGA Tour

T he 2024 Masters should be as rife with storylines as azaleas. Tiger Woods has been prowling around Augusta National Golf Club. Rory McIlroy gets his 10th crack at the career Grand Slam. LIV Golf League stars , including defending champion Jon Rahm, will test their might against PGA Tour regulars, most notably World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

The relatively small field for the 88th Masters features 89 Golf ers — a mixture of PGA Tour stalwarts, marquee LIV defectors, and a smattering of past champs, amateurs, and special invites. The top 50 scorers (plus ties) after 36 holes will make the cut.

The prize money payout and exact purse are yet to be announced (Rahm took home $3.2 million of the $18 million purse in 2023). 750 FedEx Cup points will be awarded to the winner should he hail from the PGA Tour.

In addition to a green jacket and a name etched in history, the Masters champ earns a shiny bust of the clubhouse, lifetime eligibility, and the challenge of topping Rahm’s Champions Dinner menu .

Phil Mickelson (min. 100 rounds), Tiger Woods (75-99 rounds), and Rory McIlroy (50-74 rounds) own the lowest scoring averages in tournament history.

If we’re being honest, the Masters hasn’t produced Sunday drama since Tiger in 2019, though part of that has been weather-related. As of now, the forecast calls for rain and wind on Thursday.

Here’s what else to know ahead of the Masters.

2024 Masters Preview

Augusta National, a par 72, was elongated to 7,555 yards this year, thanks to the tee box at the par-5 2nd being moved back and to the left by 10 yards (the only substantial course alteration ). Traditionally, the 2nd and the 545-yard Par-5 13th have played as the venue’s easiest holes.

Augusta’s signature stretch is Amen Corner , comprised of the par-4 11th , the par-3 12th, and the par-5 13th, bisected by Rae’s Creek.

The 12th is probably the most recognizable par-3 in golf. It’s only 155 yards, but the wind and pressure create a stiff precision test. It’s the only hole that has never seen its yardage change.

In terms of style, Augusta, by design, rewards experience, creativity, and strategic aggression. Second-shot/approach accuracy supersedes power.

The favorite: Scottie Scheffler ( +450 outright , per FanDuel)

Scheffler will make his first start since his putt on 18 at the Texas Children’s Houston Open lipped out , depriving him of three straight victories. (Scheffler dominated the Arnold Palmer Invitational and overcame neck pain to close the Players Championship.)

Nobody is sniffing Scheffler at the moment. He leads the PGA Tour in 2024 in Strokes Gained (SG): Total and SG: Approach, and he’s fourth in SG: around the green. He won the Masters in 2022. He has top-10s in eight of his last 11 majors.

Assuming he strikes the ball as usual, Scheffler can contend at Augusta without putting great — he ranks 99th in SG: putting — but he’ll need to execute at least a handful of timely rolls. If so, he’ll be borderline impossible to beat. Keyword: borderline.

Hideki Matsuyama, outright (+2200) : Matsuyama’s Sunday 62 at the Genesis Invitational remains arguably the most impressive round on the PGA Tour in 2024. Matsuyama also contended at the API and Players. He’s coming off a T7 at the Valero Texas Open.

The 2021 Masters champ has been a mainstay in the top 20 at Augusta throughout his career.

Si-Woo Kim, Top 10 (+450) : At 28 years old, Kim already has a wealth of Augusta experience: Eight starts, seven made cuts. He’s 9-for-9 on cuts in 2024 and contended at TPC Sawgrass.

Brian Harman, Top 10 (+500) : The reigning Open champ has been solid in 2024, factoring into the Sentry, API, and Players. The Georgia Bulldog hasn’t missed a cut since July, and will surely want to contend in his home state.

Russell Henley, Top 20 (+150) : Henley flies under the radar but he’s amongst the steadiest competitors on the PGA Tour. Henley is elite with his irons, contributing to a T4 at ANGC last year. He rarely misses a cut.

Corey Conners, Top 20 (+190) : Based on his ball-striking ceiling and statistical profile, Conners is a reasonable pick for every PGA Tour stop, and the Masters is no exception. Outside of two Valeros, however, his putting has kept him out of the winner’s circle. Ideally, his iron play will create makeable putts this week.

One and Done — Matt Fitzpatrick (+4000): Fitzpatrick’s PGA Tour season has been random. The 2022 U.S. Open champ missed cuts at the Genesis and API, then pulled out a back-door fifth place at TPC Sawgrass. In February, he realized he had been using the wrong weight on his driver for months.

The 29-year-old Englishman has a strong track record in majors, including two top-10s at Augusta. Nobody would be stunned to see Fitz atop the leaderboard.

Collin Morikawa (+250), Justin Thomas (+270), Jordan Spieth (+370) to miss the cut:

I want these major champions on the course this weekend, and I’m certainly not expecting all three to come up short. I just can’t trust them right now.

Since turning pro in 2020, Morikawa has ranked in the top three on the PGA Tour in SG: Approach. Not coincidentally, his track record at Augusta has been strong, with a pair of top 10s before an MC in ’23. This season, though, he’s 80th on approach. His last three results? A missed cut at the API, T45 at the Players, and T75 at the Valero.

Thomas seemed to be emerging from his year-long fun, until missed cuts at Riviera, Sawgrass, and a T64 at Innisbrook. His approach game ranks sixth, but his putting ranks 174th. Parting ways with a prolific caddie the week before the Masters doesn’t exactly engender optimism.

Spieth will always have the short-game chops to win green jackets. That said, 2024 has been a roller-coaster for the 2015 Masters champ — best evidenced by his recent adventure at TPC San Antonio.

(Of course, Spieth finished 10th.)

Other plausible contenders: Nick Taylor, Sam Burns, Taylor Moore, Shane Lowry, Bryson DeChambeau

Key storylines

  • At this stage of Rory  McIlroy ‘s career, nothing matters besides the Masters. He missed the cut in 2021 and 2023 but was T2 in 2022, and has finished top-10 in seven of his past nine majors overall. He’s been plagued by giant mistakes in 2024, and his elite driving has been wiped out by erratic approach performance. But, Rory is coming off his first top-1o of the year, at the Valero — where his approach game was elite — and a reassuring pilgrimage to swing guru Butch Harmon. The pressure will be immense.
  • Jon Rahm has four top-10s in four LIV appearances. He’s finished top-10 in five of his last six Masters starts. Rahm will be joined by 12 LIV mates — seven of whom own green jackets. Fortunately, thanks to last year’s tournament, we know that LIV players can show up to Augusta and hang. We know it won’t lead to audience growth for LIV. And, we know that once the golf starts, that’s all anybody will be focused on — at least for four glorious days.
  • Cameron Smith is the LIV player I’m most intrigued by. He’s finished T2 and T3 at Augusta, thanks to a short game tailor-made for the hallowed venue. The 30-year-old Aussie has already won a Players and an Open. His inconsistent health has rendered his LIV results tricky to gauge, and he withdrew from last weekend’s LIV Miami due to illness.
  • Brooks Koepka will be laser-focused on avenging his 2023 second-place. Koepka, openly indifferent to non-majors, is one of the most prolific major participants ever: 17 top-seven finishes, five wins.
  • In total, 18 green jacket winners are in the ’24 field: Tiger, Phil, Spieth, Scheffler, Rahm, Matsuyama, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Jose Maria Olazabal, Fred Couples, Vijay Singh, Mike Weir, Zach Johnson, Danny Willett, Charl Schwartzel, Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed and Adam Scott. DJ set the tournament scoring record in 2020 (20-under 268).
  • Can  Max Homa , Xander Schauffele , Tony Finau , Viktor Hovland, or Patrick Cantlay get serious? At least one of these top-20 guys has to break through a major … right? The PGA Tour would surely love a few of its stars not named Scheffler to make a grand statement. Schauffele has a case for the tour’s second-best player in 2024, with six top 10s in eight starts.
  • I’m pumped to watch Sahith Theegala and W ill Zalatoris . Theegala finished ninth in his Masters debut in 2023 — highlighted by an electric chip-in on Sunday. The 24-year-old has since won his first PGA Tour event (Fortinet Championship) and registered three top 10s in 2024. Theegala is of the Bubba/Spieth/Phil/Burns ilk — casually creative, bold, and inventive. In other words: just what Augusta is looking for.
  • Zalatoris’ T2 at Riviera was hugely encouraging post-back-surgery, though his putter has since let him down. The 27-year-old boasts a sterling track record in majors , with six T8s or better in nine starts. Willy Z has already banked a runner-up and T6 at the Masters. He’s an absurd ball-striker who can win any golf tournament with half-decent putting.
  • Three players received special invitations from ANGC: Joaquin Niemann (for his work in non-LIV tournaments), Thorbjorn Olesen , and 2023 DP World Tour Rookie of the Year Ryo Hisatsune , the 21-year-old from Japan. Considering Niemann’s well-publicized efforts to earn a place in the field, his dominance on LIV (two wins this season), and his triumph at the 2022 Genesis — Riviera success correlates to Augusta — all eyes will be on the talented 25-year-old Chilean this week.
  • Amateurs in the field: Jasper Stubbs, Neil Shipley, Santiago De La Fuente, Stewart Hagestad, Christo Lamprecht. The 6-foot-8 Lamprecht, a senior at Georgia Tech, is the top-ranked amateur in the world. He led the 2023 Open Championship after Round 1. An amateur has never won a green jacket, though Sam Bennett began Saturday in the penultimate group last year.
  • Akshay Bhatia secured the final spot in the field — and his first Masters appearance — with his thrilling playoff win over Denny McCarthy at TPC San Antonio. (The 22-year-old prodigy will become the first Drive, Chip & Putt finalist to start at Augusta.) Bhatia will have to navigate the shoulder injury he suffered fist-pumping on the 18th green at the Valero. “I’m hoping my shoulder should be good, but I might be a little scared to hit some shots, and we just have to find out tomorrow,” he said Monday. McCarthy, meanwhile, will hope his putter stays historically hot through the drive down Magnolia Lane.
  • Wyndham Clark, Ludvig Aberg, Grayson Murray , Lee Hodges ,  Adam Schenk , Nick Dunlap , Peter Malnati, Adrian Meronk , Nicolai Hojgaard , Matthieu Pavon , Byeong-Hun An , Stephan Jaeger , Eric Cole , Austin Eckroat , and Jake Knapp will also be making Masters debuts.
  • Aberg, 24, is already ranked No. 9 in the world. He hasn’t even played in a major, yet has a Ryder Cup, a PGA Tour win, and two 10s in 2024 Signature Events. His positive across-the-board stats align with the aesthetic beauty of his swing. Is he ready?
  • Clark  went from journeyman at 29 to No. 2 player in the world at 30. He’s coming off runner-ups at Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass, though recently tweaked his back . He possesses the iron game, shot-crafting, and refined mental approach to win a jacket. He ranks 10th in approach, ninth in tee-to-green, and second in total SG in 2024. Only three players have won in their first appearance at Augusta, and none since 1979. However, it’s unprecedented to have two players this accomplished making their debuts.
  • Tom Kim explained to me why he loves the Augusta locker rooms (once he found them ), so hopefully, that helps him find his game, too. Fellow Full Swing subject Rickie Fowler — making just his second appearance since 2020 — has also struggled in 2024.
  • Luke List has missed every cut since his T2 at Riviera, though he does  live  in Augusta. Smart man.
  • Phil Mickelson is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his first of three Masters wins. Somehow, Lefty ended up with a back-door runner-up in 2023, thanks to an out-of-nowhere Sunday 64. On the course, the 53-year-old has been largely irrelevant on LIV.
  • Finally, Tiger Woods is vying for a record 24th consecutive Masters cut . He’s also hoping to complete four rounds of a PGA Tour event for the first time since February 2023. The 15-time major champion may not agree, but at this point, sticking around through the weekend would count as a hugely successful result for the 48-year-old.

“He played great today,” Zalatoris said Monday about Woods. “He outdrove me a couple times, so there was some chirping going on. He looks great. He’s moving as well as he can be.”

Expectations have literally never been lower for Tiger Woods at the Masters, and that’s a good thing.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Despite posting his highest round in his Masters career and his worst 72-hole score in a professional event, Tiger Woods said his return to Augusta National Golf Club was a "good week."

A day after the 15-time major champion posted a 10-over 82 in the third round, he played better while carding a 5-over 77 over the final 18 holes Sunday. Woods made a triple bogey on the par-4 fifth hole to go with three bogeys and one birdie.

Woods' 72-hole total of 16-over 304 was last among the 60 golfers who made the 36-hole cut. The five-time green jacket winner was 2 strokes behind former Masters champion Vijay Singh and Denmark's Thorbjørn Olesen .

Still, Woods was able to finish an official 72-hole tournament for the first time since tying for 45th at the Genesis Invitational outside Los Angeles in February 2023. It was the first time he finished a major championship since he was 47th in the 2022 Masters, his first start after he was seriously injured in a car wreck in February 2021.

On Friday, Woods set a tournament record with his 24th consecutive made cut after opening rounds of 73-72.

"It was a good week," Woods said. "It was a good week all around. I think that coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately, yesterday it didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to.

"Today, the way that Tom [Kim] is playing, I thought I had in my system. Unfortunately, I didn't produce it."

Woods, 48, said he intends to play in next month's PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Woods also hinted that he plans to compete in the U.S. Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina, in June and The Open in Troon, Scotland, in July.

"This is a golf course I knew going into it, so I'm going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst, Valhalla and Troon, but that's kind of the game plan," Woods said. "It's always nice coming back here because I know the golf course. I know how to play it. I can kind of simulate shots. Granted, it's never quite the same as getting out here and doing it.

"Same thing, I heard there's some changes at the next couple sites. So [I have] to get up there early and check them out."

Four of Woods' 15 major championship victories were in the PGA Championship. He skipped last year's tournament in Rochester, New York, while recovering from ankle fusion surgery. He withdrew after 54 holes of the 2023 PGA Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma, because of pain in his foot.

Ohio State golfer Neal Shipley , an amateur who played with Woods in the final round, said Woods told him that he woke up around 3:45 a.m. ET Sunday to get ready to play. Woods worked in the practice area with his 15-year-old son, Charlie, before his tee time.

"I got about three hours more sleep than him," said Shipley, who finished as the low amateur at 12 over after carding a 1-over 73 on Sunday. "He's really grinding and making a big commitment to be out here for everyone. It's awesome to see the patrons really appreciative of him and really enjoy having him out here."

In his 100th round at Augusta National, Woods posted an early birdie at the par-5 second, followed by a bogey at the par-4 third. Things fell apart on the fifth hole when he hit his tee shot into the woods on the right. He found his ball but had an unplayable lie, so he had to take a golf cart ride back to the tee box to hit again. He ended up three-putting for a triple-bogey 7.

It was Woods' highest score on a hole at the Masters since taking a 10 on the 12th in the final round in 2020.

Woods had a bogey on No. 6 before a string of eight straight pars. He made another bogey on No. 15, then nearly chipped in for birdie on No. 18. The patrons surrounding the 18th green gave him a standing ovation.

"Well, I think that just the wind and what it was doing out here to the golf shots and the balls and putting, how difficult the course was playing," Woods said. "It doesn't take much to get out of position here. Unfortunately, I got out of position a lot yesterday and a couple times today."

Woods' struggles weren't all that surprising since he had played only 24 holes of competitive golf at the Genesis Invitational before arriving at Augusta National. His ballstriking and putting looked rusty; he hit 43.1% of greens and lost nearly 2 strokes to the field on the greens, according to Data Golf.

Playing with a fused right ankle and back, Woods doesn't get to practice as much as he once did. He hopes to be more ready before the PGA Championship on May 16-19.

"Well, just keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing," Woods said. "Hopefully, the practice sessions will keep getting longer."

For now, Woods plans to get some rest. He's serving as a player director on the PGA Tour's policy board to negotiate a deal with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund that would potentially bring the fractured sport back together.

Woods, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and other player directors met with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas on March 18. The PIF has financed the rival LIV Golf League the past three years.

"I don't know if we're closer, but certainly we're headed in the right direction," Woods said. "That was a very positive meeting, and I think both sides came away from the meeting feeling positive."

Alligator interrupts PGA Tour event with stroll across tee box

There was more alligator-related action from round 1 of the zurich classic, too., by eric mullin • published april 25, 2024 • updated on april 25, 2024 at 4:33 pm, scroll down to watch the video.

There was a course-invader during the opening round of the PGA Tour 's Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Thursday.

But it wasn't a fan who interrupted play.

As golfers were preparing to tee off on the 17th hole at TPC Louisiana, an alligator made its way across the tee box . And the creature certainly didn't appear to be in a hurry.

The gator deserves some credit for not waiting until one of the golfers was in their backswing to take its stroll. That's great golf etiquette.

There was more gator-related action from Round 1, too. The PGA Tour shared video of an alligator sliding into a pond near one of the greens.

Alligators have long been known to make their presence felt at the Avondale, Louisiana, course. As the broadcast alluded to in the first video, a three-legged gator named "Tripod" has turned into an unofficial course mascot.

The Zurich Classic, which is a team event that features two rounds of fourball and two rounds of foursomes, runs from Thursday to Sunday.

Rickie Fowler Makes a Hole in One at Venerable Pine Valley

Fowler and Justin Thomas played the ultra-private course Wednesday and left with a heck of a memory.

  • Author: John Schwarb

Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas took the week off from their jobs on the PGA Tour but still played golf—because when you get an invitation to Pine Valley, you take it.

The ultra-private New Jersey course is regularly tabbed No. 1 in rankings of best U.S. courses, and on bucket lists of amateurs and pros alike.

And as if the day couldn’t have gotten any better Wednesday, Rickie Fowler aced the par-3 3rd hole. A member of the group caught it on video:

🚨 #NEW — Here is video of the Hole in One Rickie made at Pine Valley yesterday. 🔥👀 pic.twitter.com/MsqmcvzqGu — Rickie Fowler Tracker (@Rickie_Tracker) April 25, 2024

Rickie Fowler has three holes in one on the PGA Tour and surely several more in casual rounds, but he’ll likely remember this one a while.
