Originally formed under the moniker Legacy, Testament (formed in 1983) is an American thrash metal group hailing from Berkeley, California, in the U.S.

Influenced by the emerging Californian thrash metal scene, Testament was originally formed of vocalist Steve Souza, guitarists Eric Peterson and Derrick Ramirez, bassist Greg Christian, and drummer Louie Clemente in 1983. However, only with the arrival of lead guitarist Alex Skolnick did the group rise above their peers, creating a polished melodic thrash metal sound. The band’s debut album “The Legacy” released in 1987 brought them instant success within thrash circles and led to immediate comparisons being drawn with Metallica. U.S. and European tours alongside Anthrax did wonders for the group’s exposure and led to the band second studio album “The New Order” in 1988.

The band’s third full-length album “Practice What You Preach” left the antiquated themes of the occult and gothic behind and focused on modern day politics and corruption. It became the band’s most popular album and resulted in noticeable airplay from MTV. 1990’s “Souls of Black” was released to fairly average reviews but sold well, despite having to compete with the growing grunge movement famed by the likes of Nirvana.

Testament’s fourth full-length became their best selling, a marked a return to a more traditional metal sound, it peaked at No. 55 on the Billboard 100 and featured the single “Return to Serenity”. After the release the band began to fade from mainstream view, and were unable to change with the times necessary for continued large-scale appeal. As a result this period was marked by constant line-up changes, with Eric Peterson remaining the only original member, and a disappointing string of albums including “Low” in 1994, “Demonic” in 1997, “The Gathering” in 1999, and “The Formation of Damnation” in 2008.

Despite this, the band has managed to retain an active and loyal following within the metal underground, who continue to see Testament perform live regularly. The band’s tenth studio album arrived in 2012 entitled “Dark Roots of Earth” and subsequently the live album “Dark Roots of Thrash” in 2013.

Live reviews

I’ve been lucky enough to see Exodus before, back in 2016, when I lived in Manchester. This is my first time seeing the mighty Testament live though, and I couldn’t be more excited. Its also my first time seeing Death Angel live who are a perfect opener for such a bill.

, I was just in time to catch Death Angel’s first song. Somehow, I managed to get a good spot with a good view, only a few places from the stage slightly to the left of the venue, stage right.

Death Angel’s setlist was mostly a mix of tunes from their modern post-reunion albums. I only own one studio and one live album from the modern era so far, so it was a bit unfamiliar with the material they chose. They only played two and a half songs from the classic first three albums (‘Voracious Souls’ and a little bit of the title track from their debut album The Ultra-Violence and then the classic opener ‘Seemingly Endless Time’ from their masterpiece Act III). Nevertheless I had a great time.

Death Angel call for blood, and you’ve not spilled enough!

Their performance was great. Tracks like ‘Thrown To The Wolves’ and especially ‘The Dream Calls For Blood’ sounded really powerful and energetic live. There wasn’t much of a stage show, but they really didn’t need it. They really got the crowd gonig with their enthusiasm and crowd ineraction.

There were sections of people throughout the room singing every word and most of the crowd were thrashing like a maniac, so to speak. It was a perfect way to start the evening.

The sound was really well mixed. y. You could hear everything perfectly but it still had a real crunchy, aggressive power.

Next came Exodus. Steve ‘Zetro’ Souza is still fronting the band. Its nice to see some line-up stability, as there was a lot of upheaval over the years. Tonight was my first time seeing them with main guitarist Gary Holt in the band. Last time I saw them, Garry wasn’t there as he was busy touring with Slayer at the time, following the untimely passing of Slayer’s Jeff Hanneman. Tonight he played a little snippet of ‘Raining Blood’ and Zetro quipped about how he could do it legally now due to having been in Slayer.

Holt and Altus

When I saw Exodus last time, their performance was great live. I remember writing at the time that if you get the chance to see them, no matter how high up or low down on the bill they are, you really must take it. They aren’t a nostalgia act, they’ve still got the fire in their eyes. This time however, they were even bloody better! They were utterly amazing. On fire. In the zone. Blistering. Whatever you want to call it, they tore the venue a new one. What a difference a Holt makes, am I right?

Zetro made a big speech about how Holt was back and how we were all lucky to catch him on his first UK date back in the fold, and by god was he right. The energy, chemistry and indescribable x-factor going on made the performance utterly captivating. Zetro made a few speechs that night, including one about Bay Area Thrash that really locked into my old teenage love of Thrash and made me smile like a goon.

Exodus’ set was more balanced between their modern and classic material than Death Angel’s had been. They didn’t have enoguh time to cover ever single album, but they hit all the key periods. There were a few tracks from their Paul Baloff-fronted debut Bonded By Blood, a few from the Souza-fronted ‘80s albums (my favourite era of the band), a few from the Souza-fronted modern albums and even one from the Rob Dukes era.

It is nice that they mix the setlist up. Last time I saw them, they didn’t play ‘Deliver Us To Evil’ or ‘Fabulous Disaster’ for example. Last time I saw them, they played ‘The Ballad Of Leonard And Charles’ from the Dukes era, and this time they played the cleverly titled ‘Deathamphetamine.’ I love how this band play material from all eras.

The band were tight, the sound was great again and they played some of my favourite songs (I was so happy to hear ‘Fabulous Disaster’ and ‘Black List’). What a brilliant time. If the night ended here, I would have been utterly satisfied.

Finally came the headliner, Testament.

Testament were great live too. Their sound was a bit more restrained and less savage than it had been for Death Angel or especially Exodus. Furthermore; Gene ‘The Atomic Clock’ Hoglan’s drumming is mechanical and perfect, compared to Tom Hunting’s crazed and exciting beast-man drumming style. This made for a nice contrast, and was suited for Testament’s more melodic parts, even if it was a little less pulverising in the heavy parts than Exodus had been.

What they lost in savagery however, they made up for in professionalism. Compared to the other two bands, Testament got more time and more of a stage show, with an hour-and-a-half set. Clearly the headliners then!

They had banners, smoke cannons, lazers and a much more colourful light show. The banners changed depending on what album they were focusing on. They had raised points for the guitarists to climb on during solos. Eric Peterson in particular was really impressive. Many of the solos I always thought were Alex from the newer records, were actually Eric. Live, he delivers them with such flare and precision it was a joy to watch.

Speaking of joy, how much fun singer Chuck Billy has. The man looks like being in Testament is his dream come true and that he’s having the best time in the world. His huge smiles as he plays air guitar on his mic stand, and air drums in sync with all the cymbal catches are so infectious. I feel like he is Testament’s number one fan and his joyous enthusiasm is such fun to behold.

I was really satisfied with Testament’s choices tonight. Their set list was a real mix as well, not just all old not all new. They covered early stuff, mid-period-stuff, and even a brand-new song from the as yet unreleased next album.

They also played a few songs from their most recent album, The Brotherhood Of The Snake which I’ve been meaning to review for ages now, but spoilers, they managed to play the best two songs from it! Huzzah! Combined with many of my favourite tunes like ‘Practice What You Preach,’ ‘Over The Wall,’ ‘The Preacher’ and ‘Into The Pit’ I was pretty chuffed.

Overall, this night was a thrash fan’s dream night if ever there was one. Once again, if it had just been Testament and Death Angel, I would have been wholly satisfied. However; given the utterly perfect set from Exodus, this was a whole other level of good.

One of the originators of Heavy Metal and just a fantastic band to experience live in concert! Over the years I have been lucky enough to experience many Testament concerts and have been impressed every time!

The concert has such a good crowd, that true Heavy Metal crowd, diehards, who just really love the band and normally have been following them for some time. This is the concert crowd that I really enjoy! Once the show starts they really know how to have a good time, how to mosh and get a bit crazy, but at the same time, taking efforts to not injure anyone, and to help anyone up that hits the floor by accident. The pit at a Testament show is really a lot of fun and a pit one can go into without too many worries of getting beat up too badly!

As for Testament themselves, well, they just own that stage! From the first lick on the guitar, its a frenzy of Metal and speed, and high powered energy! Testament truly knows how to rock a stadium and blow a crowd away! The speakers are set as loud as possible and its almost mind numbing, but in a good way! By the end of the show, I'm usually one big sweaty mess, with the biggest smile on my face and as happy as can be! The stage show itself is just a straight forward metal show! No need for stage props or other things, just the guys and their instruments ready to blow their fans away!!

TESTAMENT delivered a "Thrashrageous" performance on Friday, 4/28/17 at The Majestic Theatre in Detroit Michigan. Of course TESTAMENT was promoting their latest album "Brotherhood of The Snake" but they also did a great job in merging in some of their older material like "Over The Wall", "Into The Pit", "Practice What You Preach", "Low" & "Souls of Black"

The various guitar & drum solos were well placed in the set list and they were solos that were almost like a instrumental song instead of mindless stroking of power cords and whaling away on drum beats which kept the crowds attention throughout the night.

The support acts Prong & Sepultura help build up the momentum of the crowd's excitement & intensity with their set lists which only gave TESTAMENT the raging fuel to deliver an outstanding performance themselves.

TESTAMENT still has the goods to be a headlining act after 30+ years in the business and they will not disappoint future audiences. Wish I could go down to Cincinnati OH TONIGHT to see them again.

American thrash metal outfit Testament may have been touring for over thirty years but there is no let up in the sheer amount of aggressive energy they invest into every single show. It is one of the reason their fans continue to watch the band again and again as they always promise something new at every single gig.

From the moment the stage lights dim and the guitars begin to screech, the whole crowd is jumping as one as the energy levels are reaching fever pitch. The band jostles with the audience and encourages them to give their all for a gigantic version of 'More Than Meets the Eye'. Having played some of these tracks for over two decades, the band has had opportunity to develop and mould them into something really memorable. They thank the fans throughout and understand the dedication of the masses, they play the favourites '3 Days in Darkness' and 'The Formation of Damnation' as a suitable send off to the cheering crowd below.

I have seen Testament 1988, 1989, 2000 X2, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012 in mostly small clubs and a few theaters in San Diego, NYC, Montreal, NOLA, Seattle, Spokane, Tijuana, and even in Honolulu.

Thrash metal is what they play. Usually fast tempo's shredding guitars and double bass drums going 1000 mph.

The band does earn my respect for playing as long as they have since 1985 which they were called, Legacy back then. They don't even have any bad albums either. My fave is the first album: The Legacy. All thrash and no ballads on that album thank god. There set has all the thrash metal classics in it: Over the Wall, First Strike is Deadly, The Preacher, P.W.Y.P., Souls of Black, DNR, Into the Pit, and the newer tunes like More Than Meets the Eye, and Henchmen Ride, Native Blood. If you go to see Testament, expect a good set and get into the pit. You will get you're money's worth when you see them live.

In my opinion, Testament is one of the best metal bands of all time. They should also be one of the big 4, mainly over Anthrax. Testament separates themselves by one main factor than very few other largely recognized metal band can boast, they do not have a bad album. Even Metallica and Megadeth cannot make that claim.

If you have never seen Testament live, you are missing out. Chuck Billy can command a crowd like no other vocalist and many of my friends agree. This show was no exception. They put on a great show consistantly and I do not miss them when they come to my area. I highly recommend seeing Testament if you have not.

Happy to have seen Testament during the Brotherhood of the Snake tour.

First time seeing the band, I have seen members Gene Hoglan and Steve DiGiorgio play in Death DTA before.

It was interesting to see Gene and Steve in a different band, their stage presences weren't as much front man like as compared to the time I saw them in DTA. Steve did some great playing and had a strong stage presence but didn't steal the show from Alex, Chuck or Eric.

The same can be said about Gene, but there were moments of the show when the stage was all theirs too.

Great show, I'll definitely go see Testament again at the opportunity.

Huge Testament fan, so I'm always hyped to see them. A great performance with high energy as usual.Only problem was with it being a festival, they were forced into a short set.You wouldn't have known it from the show as they performed like a headliner! I consider Eric and the band very under rated for the genre IMHO. I've been around awhile and grateful that they are still thrashing like 30 years ago. Saw them earlier at a HOB headline and I recommend seeing them while you can. Hell of a ride guys! Thanks!

They are a Definite band just see it put on a great show even for an opener I would for sure go see them again. The opening of their set was awesome! The entire show was just a mind blowing experience for me and I’m glad I got too see Testament and Lamb of god and Anthrax and of course Slayer. I would advise anyone that is thinking of seeing Testament love to go and see them. You won’t be disappointed.

The show was thrilling and exciting. The band played a lot of their classic tunes. Each member did an unforgettable solo. They even played a longer set than during the dark roots of thrash tour. I enjoyed prong as well. Now as for Sepultura, I was disappointed as to the band Sepultura is not Sepultura without the Cavalera Bros. Aside from that, the show was terrific! I had a great time!
