Kaas Plateau Tour

kaas plateau trek from mumbai

About Kaas Plateau

The Kaas Plateau , also known as the Kaas Pathar or Kas Sadas, is a plateau situated 25 kilometres west from Satara city in Maharashtra, India. It falls under the Sahyadri Sub Cluster of the Western Ghats, and it became a part of a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2012. It is a biodiversity hotspot known for various types of seasonal wild flowers bloom and numerous species of endemic butterflies annually in the months of September, October.

The plateau is situated at an altitude of 1200 metres and is approximately 10 square kilometers in area. Kaas Pathar has more than 850 different species of flowering plants of which 624 are listed on the IUCN Red List. These include orchids, shrubs such as the Karvy, and carnivorous plants such as Drosera Indica. Kaas plateau is a plateau located near Satara. It is situated high hill plateaus and grasslands turns into a ‘valley of flowers’ during monsoon season, particularly from August to early October. Kaas Plateau has more than 150 or more types of flowers, shrubs and grasses. The orchids bloom here for a period of 3 – 4 weeks during this season. Kaas plateau is a World Natural Heritage site.

In September, some of the most common flowering plants are Eriocaulon manoharani, Pogostemon deccanensis, Senecio grahamii, Impatiens oppositifolia and Dipcadi montanum. The plateau experiences a natural cycle of extreme conditions, with wet water-logged cool monsoons, very dry barren hot summer (45°C) and dry winter (5°C). The soil is a thin layer on top of Deccan rock, with varying quality of nutrients. The annual cyclic ecosystem here, and nearby similar but smaller lateritic plateaus, has adapted to these conditions. The entire flowering plants and their related plants are typically restricted to that particular locality only. This is because the plateau is largely formed of basalt which is directly exposed to atmosphere. The basalt is covered almost entirely by a thin cover of soil formed due to erosion and has accumulated a layer of not more than a inch or so. This soil is neither black nor lateritic.

At certain places water gets accumulated because of uneven surface. Such places appear like small puddles which harbor a typical marshy flora. Because of this particular situation of soil the plants growing on Kaas plateau are typically of herbaceous nature of like grasses. Botanically the flora is labelled as “herbaceous”. The small shrubs and trees are located at the periphery of the plateau.

Major Attractions:

  • Kaas Pathar- Plateau of Flowers
  • Rich Bio-diversity of Kaas- Endangered / Rare / Endemic / Common Species
  • Plateau changes its colour after every 15- 20 days, as the cycle of flowering plants progresses with the monsoon from August to October.
  • Brief on the IUCN Red List at Kaas.
  • Local cuisines to keep us energetic throughout the event

You can even address Kaas Plateau as “ Kaas Pathar ” which in local language means Plateau. This beautiful place is situated in the Sahyadri Ghat ranges, which is close to Satara city of Maharashtra . However, the total area of the Kaas Plateau is 10 square kilometer and the whole area is covered with beautiful flora.

Nature is in its best form in this part of Maharashtra. You will encounter a variety of wildflowers from August to September. On the other hand, the leaves of trees turn into beautiful red color during late March. Due to the amazing variety of flora, the Kaas Plateau has been declared as Biodiversity World Heritage Site by UNESCO .

Apart from flowers, this plateau is even the home to many faunas as well. Many mammals, reptiles and birds reside in this serene place. On the other hand, there are a huge variety of Ayurvedic plants which are hard to be identified by any layman. Therefore, in order to gain the complete knowledge of what you are exploring you will have to take a guide on your entire itinerary.

Moreover, for the protection of this place, the Maharashtra Tourist Authority has allotted some guards who prevent anyone from stomping on the flowers. While you are in this Valley of Flowers always remember that “ beauty is to relish and not ruin ”.

10 Things to remember while visiting Kaas Plateau

Mickey Mouse flowers at Kaas Valley

Photo of 10 Things to remember while visiting Kaas Plateau by Radhika

It's that time of the year again!! If we weren't in the middle of a pandemic, Mumbaikars & Punekars would have been planning a nice rainy trek to some mountains in the Sahyadris. But alas! things are different in the year 2020! In any other year, between August to October is when you would love to plan a trip to view the beautiful variety of flowers bloom at Maharashtra's very own valley of flowers - Kaas Plateau . I had been there in September 2018 and would like to share few tips for visiting this place. So, go ahead and tick this amazing place off from your bucket list when the situation permits!!

Photo of 10 Things to remember while visiting Kaas Plateau 1/1 by Radhika

Kaas Plateau of Flowers

1. Make Mumbai or Pune your base: If you're lucky enough like me to be residing in one of these cities then it's easy but if you're travelling from any other part of the country or world, then these 2 will be the best cities to start the trip from. Of course, you don't have to do that if you're doing a road trip, this is for people travelling via plane.

2. Be prepared for an 6-8 hour drive: Yup, it's that far even from Mumbai or Pune, so be prepared for a long drive.

3. Combine the trip with Mahabaleshwar: Many people don't realize this but it's very near from Mahabaleshwar, so if you're visiting this popular hill station during the blooming season, don't miss out on going to Kaas Plateau from here.

Photo of Kaas Plateau of Flowers, Maharashtra by Radhika

4. Try authentic Maharashtrian food: Yup, food here in nearby small restaurants are mouth watering and nobody talks about it. But even after being a Mumbaikar, I've had the best Maharashtrian style chicken gravy over here! I think the restaurant we went to was called "Friends Restaurant"

5. Reach there before 9.00 am: For 2 important reasons if you are traveling on your own - This place gets crowded after that and by place I mean the queue for tickets, the traffic jam on the road to reach this place and 2nd VERY IMPORTANT reason - it has a limit of only 3000 visitors per day due to it being a UNESCO World Natural heritage site. ( This rule could change due to Covid-19, I am assuming the limit would decrease even further so please inquire before booking a trip for here )

6. Be prepared to walk a lot: Wear comfortable shoes because this place is huge!! It's almost impossible to cover the whole area in one trip because it would be tiring to walk so much. But cover as much variety of flowers as possible to make the most of your trip.

7. Get a cheap deal with trek groups: There are numerous trek groups conducting day tours from Mumbai and Pune to visit Kaas Plateau. If you want to do a solo trip or a budget trip, these trek groups are the best option to choose from. We booked our trip with Mumbai Hikers for Rs. 1900 each which included travel, sightseeing, breakfast, lunch and tea. It's better this way because they have their contacts and queues move faster plus they directly take you to the right places inside the Plateau and you can make the most of your trip.

8. Don't forget to visit the amazing Kaas Lake: While Kaas Plateau is beautiful by itself, there is a small lake at one end of the plateau which looks breathtaking in the middle of the stunning flowers!! Sit by the shore of the lake, day dreaming or people watching. It's blissful!!

Kaas Lake in the middle of the plateau

Photo of Kaas Lake, Kas, Maharashtra, India by Radhika

9. Know basic Marathi while visiting this place: This is especially necessary if you are travelling on your own. This place is in the middle of Satara district and you'll rarely get Hindi speaking locals, leave alone English. So, to make your experience smooth, learn a bit of Marathi language or bring with you someone who can speak the language.

10. Take a guide book: If you are really into wanting to learn in depth about the flora here then take a guide book available at the entrance for a reasonable price. It gives all the information needed about the flowers that bloom here.

Have fun and don't forget to take your camera to capture this colorful landscape! If you have already visited this place, let me know your experience in the comments below. :)

Mumbai

Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex is a clean and well-maintained sea-facing attraction in South Mumbai. Located in one of the sophisticated localities, this Napeansea Road park overlooks many expensive apartments on the street. Every nook and corner of this 20 acres land has now become a powerhouse to keep the heart of Mumbai pumping. For more than 3 decades, this wonderland has served as a recreational site, and sports and fitness complex. Visit here early in the morning to witness the magic of this refuge for the inhabitants of Mumbai.  Also, Mumbaikars do not forget to visit here in the early monsoons to sit on its sea-facing end and seek a delight with the sound of soothing waves. Once, this piece of land was merely a rocky patch of the coastal area of Malabar. What you see today is a gorgeous lush green garden lined up with a total of 600+ coconut trees. With a perfect and well-maintained ambiance, this park is a boon for early morning yoga, jogging, walking, aerobics, and so on. The credit, of course, goes to its active group – the Malabar Hill Citizen Forum, who looks after it as its own child. You can connect with their authorities to be an annual member of the plethora of recreational sports activities that they organize. In addition to pumping the adrenaline of youth with its recreational touch, Priyadarshini Park of Mumbai also serves as an ideal family outing location and a lover’s point. If you are fortunate enough, you may even witness little squirrels accompanying you here for some pleasing views.

Taraporewala Aquarium

This sightseeing place in Mumbai is one of the largest aquariums in the city of Mumbai. Situated in Marine Drive, this aquarium was founded by D. B. Taraporewala, a Parsi philanthropist, in the year 1951. The aquarium has a twelve feet long three-sixty degrees glass tunnel that holds interesting marine life. There are several species of fish here, such as damselfish, butterfly fish, tiger fish, angelfish, moss, sea urchins, sea cucumber, marine eels, etc

Babulnath

Whenever you are visiting Mumbai, Babulnath Shiva temple is a must-visit for inner peace and tranquillity. It is one of the oldest temples in Mumbai, which increases its importance in the eyes of the loyal devotees. Its walls are specially carved with limestone that depicts the Hindu mythology, which travellers find it exciting at the first look. At this temple, the beautiful marble flooring is specially brought down from Rajasthan. Thus, each step you take inside this temple feels royal and enchanting along with the daily devotees you can meet and greet, dressed in Indian attires. So, every moment spent in this temple is blissful with internal peace and devotion. Moreover, you can witness devotees from different corners of the world who love to pay their tribute to Lord Shiva and other idols.Once you enter the holy temple revered by so many Hindus and locals, you can find sculptures and idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Nandi with Kashyap. We would also advise you to buy a basket outside the temple steps before entering. This basket will bring joy, happiness and fulfil all your wishes once you pay your heartfelt worship to Shiva and other lords like Durga Mata and Goddess Parvati at the centre of this temple.  If you have any doubts regarding the same, you can always ask devotees around you or the priest to know how to get the prayer done with the basket that you buy.On the other hand, idols of Goddess Parvati and Durga Mata are respectfully placed in the centre of this temple. What’s even more special about this temple is that around 4 times a day, prayers for Lord Shiva are recited here. This temple gets approximately a lakh devotees for Darshan during the Mahashivratri. The whole scenario is a sight to behold and capture in your hearts to narrate stories about back home.
