Dave Matthews Band’s Grown-Up View of Love and Dread

“Walk Around the Moon,” the group’s 10th album, faces troubles and searches for solace.

Seven men stand in a row against an industrial wall, all wearing dark-colored clothes and jackets.

By Jon Pareles

Dave Matthews Band albums seesaw between joy and angst. On the home front, with a partner and family, the songs find affection, pleasure and ease. Beyond it, the wider world holds strife and dread. And looking inward can be just as troubling.

“Walk Around the Moon,” the band’s 10th studio album, opens with its title song , swinging the beat and exulting in a relationship that has saved the grateful singer: “You gave me everything/Now I’m flying into this kaleidoscopic dream.” But that dream doesn’t last; up next is a song about school shootings. “Madman’s Eyes” is set to an ominous, Middle Eastern-tinged modal riff and buttressed by a moaning, swooping string orchestra, as Matthews howls, “Don’t sacrifice another child!”

More than most rock songwriters — especially in the jam-band realm where he has been barnstorming for three decades — Matthews, 56, leans into being a grown-up. He’s an unabashed dad-rocker, a proud parent who has long been thinking and worrying about the welfare of his children and of generations to come. In “Something to Tell My Baby,” a waltz backed by only his acoustic guitar and a few strings, Matthews muses on how fleeting life can be, crooning in his humblest falsetto and wondering what memories to leave behind “to make them smile/And maybe make things easier.”

“Walk Around the Moon” is the band’s first studio album since 2018, and the first since its longtime violinist, Boyd Tinsley, left the band and was sued for sexual harassment by a musician in a side project; the case was settled in 2019.

The band’s sound had already been changing and deepening. On its 1990s albums, Matthews’s guitar — often acoustic — was the band’s only chordal instrument, joined in light-fingered counterpoint by saxophone, violin, bass and drums for staccato grooves that blended folk, funk and jazz. Through the years, as its audiences grew to arena size, the band was bolstered with keyboards, electric guitar and horns, growing brawnier, weightier and brassier. (Rashawn Ross, a trumpeter who has toured with the band since 2006, now has a more prominent role.) But the band’s founding rhythm section — Carter Beauford on drums and Stefan Lessard on bass — still keeps the songs nimble, no matter how burdened Matthews’s thoughts can become.

“I’m down in this hole again,” he sings in “Looking for a Vein,” as he compares himself to a miner who works compulsively. “What if I strike it/rich as I want to be?” he muses over a loping, six-beat guitar lick. “Will it set me free/Or be just another hole to dig?” In “The Only Thing,” over a barreling electric guitar riff that hints at Led Zeppelin, Matthews is desperate to “Crawl out of this skin I’m living in/Crawl out of my mind into the outside.” And in “Monsters,” a reverberating ballad with a sputtering double time undercurrent, he’s trying to reassure a child — or possibly himself — that the “monsters in your head” aren’t real.

In these new songs, love, or even the possibility of love, solves a lot of problems: the fear in “Monsters,” the self-loathing in “The Only Thing.” Other songs — “After Everything” and “Break Free” — cautiously celebrate love going right, emotionally and carnally, with Matthews pledging devotion while full-tilt horn sections blare his delight.

But he’s well aware that love, in a happy domestic sphere, is just an individual refuge, not a global solution. “The world is going in all directions/Like bottles shattered on the floor,” he sings in the elegiac “All You Ever Wanted Was Tomorrow.” And he closes the album alone on acoustic guitar, with “Singing From the Windows.” The song imagines being within a siege, thinking about “when the war is over” while watching fires and hearing sirens.

“None of us know what’s to come tomorrow,” he sings. “So dance with me like the time we’ve got is borrowed.” Private comfort amid public catastrophe — it’s only a modest consolation, but that’s all there is.

Dave Matthews Band “Walk Around the Moon” (Bama Rags/RCA)

An earlier version of this article misstated information about a trumpeter who plays with Dave Matthews Band. Rashawn Ross did not replace Boyd Tinsley; he has toured with the band since 2006. An earlier version also misstated Dave Matthews’s age. He is 56, not 58.

Not even a lightning storm could derail Dave Matthews Band's cosmic Ruoff performance

dave matthews tour 2023 reviews

It was too epic for a mere mortal with only these two hands to describe, but I will try.

It started with a long Friday evening bass solo.

Dave Matthews, covered in sweat like the rest of us, began strumming away as he launched into a lilting cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower." His group — horns, keys, the whole merry band — brought a rush of good noise behind him.

No guitar solo, I thought to myself. Strange. This band can handle it. An organ solo hits instead.

But then, the guitar solo. But this isn't "All Along the Watchtower."

It's "Stairway to Heaven."

More: Fighting rigor mortis at Dead & Company's last Ruoff show

One top five all-time solo exchanged for another, and then here comes Matthews in full screaming falsetto singing the Led Zeppelin outro.

That was still not enough. We go back to "All Along the Watchtower" for a huge finish.

As God as my witness, when the song ended the set, a lightning storm kicked in — booming thunder, though drowned out by applause, with visible strikes surging down.

Is the — is the wind actually going to begin to howl? Did Hendrix do this?

The band soon re-emerged for an encore, but it was wholly unnecessary. Something unforgettable had just occurred.

I am not a member of the annual DMB Ruoff/Deer Creek mini-residency fan club. At least, I wasn't at the beginning of the night.

Last year, we opted to send an intern, Griffin Wiles, on a lark. He loved the show and did an excellent job .

So this year, even though I had already seen eight bands at three Ruoff shows this week, I was determined to see it for myself.

No. 9 was the best of the lot.

A packed house was treated to an astounding allotment of musical textures, singing styles and general wizardry. Even the boring or weird songs, of which there were only a few, had a little something interesting to chew on — a whistle or saxophone solo, a startling tempo change.

I can pick out Matthews's radio hits. We got a solid "Tripping Billies" rendition to open up the show and "Where Are You Going" toward the end.

But the stuff I didn't know was even better, and the stuff that wasn't written by Matthews was somehow even better than that.

In addition to "All Along the Stairway," Matthews dropped his otherwise fixed guitar from his hands and did a note-perfect cover of "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel.

It was not a Matthews-esque treatment. It was exactly the way Gabriel does it. Probably better in 2023. Matthews was '80s dancing and doing an impeccable impression.

DM is astounding. He gets tremendous gas mileage out of that voice, with vocals in a variety of styles, tones and volumes painted across a two-and-a-half-hour set.

But the B in DMB is astounding. The B is on fire. The B can cook.

More: 'Hot Summer Nights' tour brings a little bit of everything to Ruoff

"Grey Street" had people dancing in the aisles. Matthews was up there belting, but then the band launched into an instrumental break with a sublime dueling horn solo. The dancing people began screeching as loud as they possible could. They damn near popped my earplugs out (nine performances in six days can hurt, if you aren't careful).

Another moment zoomed over my level of understanding, but it was nice all the same.

After "So Damn Lucky," the crowd started singing the chorus from Sly and the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)." The band knew it was coming, so it was just me out of the loop.

"Break Free' turned into the type of jamming I like: A long, worthwhile organ solo that builds with the horns and drums into a satisfying conclusion. They're all playing the same song up there. No one is getting lost on a nine-minute journey.

The only real negative was I had a partially obstructed view of the stage, but half of it looked great. The sound was good, and that's what matters.

Plus, I spent some time people watching.

It was, as I had been warned, a sufficiently bro-y crowd.

I heard men in their 40s talking about beer pong. If I were to ask this crowd what its favorite Matthew McConaughey film is, the answers would contain both depth and nuance. If it needed to sneak out of its favorite sorority house under cover of total darkness, this crowd could navigate on memory alone.

That's not to say folks weren't friendly. The couple next to me could sense I was the fish out of water and asked me about my job.

The audience also brought tremendous energy. So, go forth. Bro if you want to. Bro around the world.

And what's all this I hear about Saturday usually being the better show of the two? Who is this Satur-Dave, and how could that possibly be true?

Unlike 99% of my reviews, you can go see what the fuss is about on Saturday, if you desire.

Dave Matthews Band

Dave Matthews Band is returning this year with a new album and a full summer tour in support. The veteran, record-setting rock band announced on Tuesday (Jan. 24) that Walk Around the Moon , their 10th studio album, is set to drop May 19 via RCA Records.

Looking Ahead: A Release Calendar of Upcoming Albums in 2023

Spanning 12 original tracks, Walk Around the Moon was formed during the pandemic and “is as much a reflection on the current times as it is an urge to find common ground,” reads a statement from the band.

Trending on Billboard

Producer Rob Evans worked on “Madman’s Eyes,” which DMB road-tested at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, back in November 2021.

The fresh cut blends Middle Eastern vibes with horns and strings, and sees Matthews pose the question, “When it’s too late to untwist the knife/ How do we face hatred with the love inside us.”

Longtime collaborator John Alagia served as executive producer of Walk Around the Moon , with Evans working on most of its tracks. A limited-edition deluxe vinyl option is available exclusively at the official DMB website .

With the new collection comes a major North American jaunt. Following three dates in Mexico, DMB will kick off its U.S. run at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Texas, on May 19. As the calendar currently stands, the trek is scheduled to wrap Sept. 3 with the last in a three-night stand at Gorge Amphitheatre, in George, Wash.

Walk Around the Moon is the follow-up to Come Tomorrow from 2018, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 , the band’s seventh consecutive leader, a hot streak that dates back to 1998’s Before These Crowded Streets. DMB is the only group to see seven straight studio albums bow at No. 1 on the U.S. tally.

Formed in Charlottesville, Va., in 1991, DMB has more than 25 million career ticket sales and upwards of 38 million combined CD and DVD sales, according to reps.

Though, despite winning the fan vote by a wide margin in 2020, DMB has yet to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Tickets for the DMB summer tour will be available to the general public beginning Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. local time.

Visit davematthewsband.com for more information, or check the DMB Warehouse Fan Association for presales.

Coinciding with the launch of their U.S. summer tour (full list of dates below), Dave Matthews Band will release Walk Around The Moon – their 10th studio album and the follow-up to their chart-topping 2018 album, Come Tomorrow – on May 19. Most of the album’s 12 original songs were recorded with producer Rob Evans, including the first single, “Madman’s Eyes,” which was released today. Longtime collaborator, John Alagia, served as executive producer of the album. Walk Around The Moon took shape during the pandemic and is as much a reflection on the current times as it is an urge to find common ground.

The headline run will include the band’s first show at the historic Forest Hills Stadium in New York on June 9. The tour will conclude with the band’s traditional three-day, Labor Day weekend celebration at Gorge Amphitheatre in George, WA (September 1-3). See below for the itinerary.

Dave Matthews Band Detail Fall 2023 Tour Dates, MSG Shows

Dave Matthews Band Detail Fall 2023 Tour Dates, MSG Shows

Today, Dave Matthews Band have revealed their plans for a captivating U.S. fall tour. The headline tour is poised to take place throughout November and comprises eight shows, including two nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Dave Matthews Band’s tour will commence at Savannah, Ga.’s Enmarket Arena on Nov. 7. From there, the band will continue to take the stage at notable venues, including the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C., as well as two-night engagements at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va., the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., and finally the aforementioned shows at Madison Square Garden which will serve as the tours final shows on Nov. 17 and 18.

Notably, a portion of the proceeds generated from the shows at John Paul Jones Arena will contribute to the band’s ongoing commitment to the redevelopment of Charlottesville’s public housing. This initiative is an augmentation to the substantial five million dollars that the band, in collaboration with Bama Works and Red Light Management, has already dedicated to this project.

Continuing their admirable alliance with The Nature Conservancy , the band has seen the planting of three million trees since 2020. The upcoming fall tour will further this partnership, adding another million trees to the tally. Concertgoers can contribute to the cause by donating an optional $2 per ticket, supporting The Nature Conservancy’s global endeavor to plant one billion trees by 2025 through their Plant a Billion Trees campaign. Find further details at www.dmbtrees.org .

Additionally, as the curtain draws on their summer tour, the Dave Matthews Band will commemorate their traditional three-day Labor Day weekend celebration at the renowned Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Wash., on Sept. 1-3.

Following the extensive U.S. fall tour, the band will embark on an international journey to South Africa with performances in Pretoria and Cape Town, while Matthews and guitarist Tim Reynolds will embark on their seventh all-inclusive concert vacation in Mexico’s Riviera Maya in 2024.

An online ticket presale for members of the DMB Warehouse Fan Association is underway now and can be found here . Citi card members will have access to presale tickets beginning Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 9:00 a.m. ET until Thursday, Sept. 14, at 10:00 p.m. ET through the Citi Entertainment program. The three-CD set was recorded at the 200 capacity Lion’s Share club formerly located in the small town of San Anselmo, CA, just 20 miles north of San Francisco. The performance features Jerry Garcia performing with friend, mentor and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Merl Saunders. The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.

Dave Matthews Band announces 2023 fall headline tour

' src=

Dave Matthews Band has announced plans to tour the U.S. this fall. The headline run, which will kick off on November 7 at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, GA, will also include a show at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, SC plus two-night stands at John Paul Jones Arena in the band’s hometown of Charlottesville, VA, Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT and New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

A portion of proceeds from the John Paul Jones Arena shows will benefit the band’s ongoing commitment to the resident-led redevelopment of Charlottesville’s public housing. This contribution is in addition to the five million dollars that Bama Works, Dave Matthews Band, and Red Light Management have already committed to the project.

An online ticket presale for members of the DMB Warehouse Fan Association is underway now at  www.warehouse. davematthewsband.com . Citi is the official card of the Dave Matthews Band 2023 tour. Citi card members will have access to presale tickets beginning Tuesday, September 12, at 9:00 AM ET until Thursday, September 14, at 10:00 PM ET through the Citi Entertainment program. Dave Matthews Band’s ongoing partnership with The Nature Conservancy has resulted in three million trees being planted since 2020. This year’s partnership, which will continue with the fall tour, will bring the total to four million trees. Fans can join in this mission by adding an optional donation of $2 per ticket to plant a tree with The Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees campaign – a major forest restoration effort with the goal of planting a billion trees around the world by 2025. For additional details, visit  www.dmbtrees.org .

Their summer tour draws to a close with the band’s traditional three-day, Labor Day weekend celebration at Gorge Amphitheatre in George, WA (September 1-3). Named as a UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador in 2019, Dave Matthews Band has a long history of reducing their environmental footprint, going back to their first shows in 1991. Having sold more than 25 million tickets since inception, making them the second largest ticket-seller in history, “DMB is synonymous with summer” for many fans, The New York Times declared in  this  feature.

Following their fall U.S. dates, Dave Matthews Band will head to South Africa to play shows in Pretoria and Cape Town. Matthews and guitarist Tim Reynolds will travel to Mexico’s Riviera Maya in 2024 for the seventh in their series of all-inclusive  concert vacations . Set for February 15-18, the outing is nearly sold out.

Dave Matthews Band has sold a collective 38 million CDs and DVDs combined. Matthews recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal about Walk Around The Moon, the band’s new album, and their passion for touring. Read the feature  here . In  this  GQ video, he breaks down the band’s most iconic tracks. Matthews also appeared on  “The Howard Stern Show.”

Dave Matthews Band Unveil Fall 2023 Tour Dates

by Cillea Houghton August 29, 2023, 10:28 am

Dave Matthews Band will wind down 2023 on the road. On Tuesday (August 29), the band announced a handful of dates for a late fall 2023 tour. Taking place throughout November, the tour takes them to five cities in the U.S.

Videos by American Songwriter

The trek kicks off on November 7 in Savannah, Georgia, followed by a stop in Greenville, South Carolina, on November 8. They’ll host two-night stays in their hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, at John Paul Jones Arena, as well as Uncasville, Connecticut, at Mohegan Sun Arena, and New York City at Madison Square Garden where the tour wraps on November 17 and 18.

The tour will also be an environmentally and socially conscious endeavor. A portion of the proceeds from their shows in Charlottesville will be donated to their ongoing efforts for the city’s public housing redevelopment program. In 2018, Dave Matthews Band, frontman Dave Matthews and Red Light Management pledged to donate $5 million for the reinvestment in public and affordable housing in Charlottesville.

The band will also continue to support The Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees campaign during the fall tour. According to a press release, the campaign is “a major forest restoration effort to plant a billion trees around the world by 2025.” Since 2020, three million trees have been planted.

The fall trek will follow the band’s summer tour that concludes with their annual Labor Day shows at Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington, September 1-3. Not long after the fall tour concludes, the band will perform two shows in Matthew’s native South Africa at SunBet Arena in Pretoria on December 10 and Grand Arena in Cape Town on December 12. He was born in Johannesburg and his family moved to America when he was two years old. This marks the first time the band has played in South Africa in a decade.

Dave Matthews Band released their latest album, Walk Around the Moon , in May 2023.
