There followed a string of gangster roles played alongside De Niro, namely “Once Upon a Time in America”, “Goodfellas” and “Casino”. But I like Pesci’s comedic acting best of all. He was marvelous in the “Home Alone” films, the “Lethal Weapon” series, and my personal favorite, “My Cousin Vinny”. Pesci gets a mention in the stage musical “Jersey Boys”, which isn’t too surprising as he is one of the show’s producers.

“Bupkis” is a comedy drama TV show created by and starring comedian Peter Davidson, supported by Edie Falco and Joe Pesci. Apparently, episodes are inspired by Davidson’s own life.

107 Jacuzzis, e.g. : BATHS

“Jacuzzi” is one of those brand names that has become so much associated with the product that it is often assumed to be a generic term. The Jacuzzi company was founded in 1915 by the seven(!) Jacuzzi brothers in Berkeley California. The brothers, who were Italian immigrants, pronounced their name “ja-coot-si”, as one might suspect when one realizes the name is of Italian origin. The company started off by making aircraft propellers and then small aircraft, but suspended aircraft production in 1925, when one of the brothers was killed in one of their planes. The family then started making hydraulic pumps, and in 1948 developed a submersible bathtub pump so that a son of one of the brothers could enjoy hydrotherapy for his rheumatoid arthritis. The “hydrotherapy product” took off in the fifties with some astute marketing towards “worn-out housewives” and the use of celebrity spokesman Jack Benny.

109 “Se __ español” : HABLA

“Habla español?” is Spanish for “Do you speak Spanish?” “Aquí se habla español” translates as “Spanish is spoken here”.

110 Spring bloom : TULIP

We usually associate the cultivation of tulips with the Netherlands, but they were first grown commercially in the Ottoman Empire. The name “tulip” ultimately derives from the Ottoman Turkish word “tulbend” that means “muslin, gauze”.

113 Fictional sleuth Wolfe : NERO

Nero Wolfe is a fictional detective and the hero of many stories published by author Rex Stout. There are 33 Nero Wolfe novels for us to read, and 39 short stories. There are also movie adaptations of two of the novels: “Meet Nero Wolfe” (1936) which features a young Rita Hayworth, and “The League of Frightened Men” (1937). One of Wolfe’s endearing traits is his love of good food and beer, so he is a pretty rotund character.

“Digs” is short for “diggings” meaning “lodgings”. Where “diggings” came from, no one seems to know.

117 Down Under hopper : ROO

Took about 58 minutes. 2 errors. Didn’t know AUTEUR or LIU. Guessed AUTEAR and LIA.

My printed newspaper [Worcester (MA) Sunday Telegram] provided the following two clues: Down-47 Like business vis-ˆ-vis coach Down-109 “Se __ espa–ol” Did anyone else experience either of these two inexcusable errata?

Sneaked a peep on a few. Works for me!

25:50, 2 errors. Had ITSY for 43A and never noticed that the resulting 33D (ORSHO) didn’t make any sense. Fun puzzle, the theme helped. I didn’t realize until reading Bill’s explanation that each circled letter was also the 5th.

Also, typo in Bill’s explanation of 29A – the jazz club was called “Marla’s….”

I got it, but I’m still scratching my head about “32 Decide one will : OPT TO”

If the clue were “Decide one’s will”, or simply “Decide”, it would make a lot more sense to me.

“Take” seems incomplete – take these themes, ugh.

“Plead the Fifth” (Amendment) “Take the Fifth” (Amendment) to the United States Constitution. No self-incrimination, etc.

Theme didn’t help at all. You needed to know some French to finish the puzzle. Why is the answer to Judge’s Seat – Banc? There was no indication that the answer would be in French.

TUESDAY PUZZLE — In the constructor notes that accompanied his last New York Times Crossword , in July 2023, Billy Bratton left us on a cliffhanger:

This may be my last one for a while, but I shall return …

With these words — and our reaction to them — Mr. Bratton may have unwittingly given us a major hint to today’s puzzle, in which the theme hinges on a synonym for the phrase “Stop right there!” In any case, I’m glad that he has decided to return to us mere months later, as his latest grid offers the perfect Tuesday challenge: It’s crunchy in all the right places, but satisfyingly simple to unwrap. And it doesn’t crumble! (Am I talking about a puzzle or a granola bar at this point? It’s anyone’s guess.)

Let’s descend into the valley of the solve.

Today’s Theme

The revealer at 39-Across asks us to come up with another way to say “Stop right there!” But we have to figure out an expression that might also serve as a “hint to the first words of 17-, 23-, 47- and 59-Across.”

Let’s run briefly through our theme set:

A “Black Friday offer, e.g.” (17A) is known as a DOOR BUSTER, even if most of these deals are no longer worth busting down any doors for.

“Something extended to a borrower” (23A) is a LINE OF CREDIT.

A “Gymnastics sequence involving tumbling” — or triple-double flips, in the case of Simone Biles — is a FLOOR ROUTINE (47A).

The “Expansive medical center headquartered in Rochester, Minn.,” (59A) is the MAYO CLINIC.

Per the revealer, we’re concerned with only the first words of these entries: DOOR, LINE, FLOOR and MAYO (if you play Connections , another one of our games, you may find this similar to a round of that game). What could precede each of these words to form four distinct expressions? Another way of saying “Stop right there!” is HOLD IT. And voilà: Hold the DOOR, hold the LINE, hold the FLOOR and hold the MAYO.

A note for newer solvers: I tend to unpack the theme here in the order that best explains it, but those revealer “hints” can be used in whatever way helps you crack the puzzle. Let’s say, for instance, you had only the entries containing MAYO and FLOOR. You might then discover HOLD IT, at 39A, and deduce the other themed entries by guessing at expressions with the word “hold.” Some prefer to solve the puzzle entirely before identifying the theme; others kick things off with themed entries. It’s really your journey! I’m just the walking stick. Or something.

Tricky Clues

16A. “Debriefed?” is an adjective here, and a winking one at that. It signifies someone without briefs on: in other words, NAKED.

20A. It feels like a cognitive jump to get from the clue phrase “That would stink!” to its entry, I HOPE NOT, though they can mean the same thing. My first try here was “I’d hate it,” perhaps an equally weird choice.

55A. A situation “In which you might talk through your problems?” is an ORAL EXAM — the kind you give in school, that is, as opposed to the one you receive at the dentist. (You are, of course, welcome to talk through life’s problems with your dentist.)

15D. This “Old habit?” isn’t hard to break, per se: It’s a TUNIC. You may have trouble changing its color, though — it’s said that old habits dye hard. Sorry!

30A. “Highway no-nos” are spelled a few different ways in the Times Crossword. They’re UIES here, but have been “ueys” when it has suited the grid better.

34D. Aficionados of 2010s pop music may recall that “CeeLo Green’s ‘Forget You’” had a somewhat spicier title, also beginning with the letter F, when it became a chart-topping single. This version, with its title and lyrics scrubbed clean for mass audiences, was a RADIO EDIT.

36D. The first name of the “Yale for whom Yale University is named” is ELIHU. Though the name has appeared dozens of times in our crossword, this instance happens to be timely: As part of a recent apology for its connections to slavery , Yale released a book that detailed how much the school’s original benefactor, ELIHU Yale, had profited from the slave trade.
