How Quran and Hadith Describe About Earth?

Assalamualaikum

Mufti saab,

I am a regular visitor of your site and frequently ask questions. Alhamdulillah I am very much satisfied by your fatwas.

I have few questions that I get daily in my mind.

1. Should we believe the images of earth from space? They are Round in shape and like a ball as per the satellite images.

2. How Quran and Hadith describe about earth? I heard that earth is like a plate (flat dish on which food is served).

Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

That which can be seen with the eye, and upon which one can gain knowledge, should be accepted as it is seen and known. Hence, with respect to the images of earth from space, one can accept them as they are given through the satellite images. These are based on that which has been witnessed and seen via the use of reliable electronic equipment. They should be accepted in this manner.

The Quran has spoken about the earth in different ways. Some of the verses relate to the creation of the earth, others speak about the time taken for creation and some make mention of what was the state before.

Some of these verses are:-

Allah says in Sura 41 verse11:-

Then He turned to the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: “Come both of you, willingly or unwillingly.” They said: “We do come in willing obedience.”

In another verse Allah says:-

‘Have not the disbelievers seen that the heavens and earth were joined together as one body, then we parted them’. (21:30)

The first verse above indicates to the fact that the universe was once a large mass of smoke. This reference to ‘smoke’ is the gaseous mass that scientists refer to when they state that the universe was once an opaque highly devised and hot gaseous composition. (The First Three Minutes, a Modern view of the Origin of the universe, Weinberg gp.94-105).

The other verse quoted above, refers to the separation process of a primary single mass whose elements were fused together and then diffused and separated. It therefore means that the earth and the heavens were one connected entity and were then separated afterwards.

With respect to the description of the earth, the following are mentioned in the Holy Quran :-

1) Sura 2 verse 22 states:-

‘Who has made the earth your couch, and the heavens your canopy; and sent down rain from the heavens; and brought forth therewith Fruits for your sustenance; then set not up rivals unto Allah when ye know (the truth).

2) Sura 13 verse 3 states:-

And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o’er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!

3) Sura 20 verses 53, 54 states:-

53. “He Who has, made for you the earth like a carpet spread out; has enabled you to go about therein by roads (and channels); and has sent down water from the sky.” With it have We produced diverse pairs of plants each separate from the others.

54. Eat (for yourselves) and pasture your cattle: verily, in this are Signs for men endued with understanding.

4) Sura 27 verse 61 states:-

Or, Who has made the earth firm to live in; made rivers in its midst; set thereon mountains immovable; and made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing water? (Can there be another) god besides Allah. Nay, most of them know not.

Here, a reference has been made to the general stability of the Earth’s crust which was once unstable.

There is no clear indication in the verses of the Holy Quran or ahadith that identifies the Earth as being round, oval shape or flat. Obviously, the images taken through satellite pictures etc. reveal the way in which it looks to us from a far distance. Hence, this can be accepted.

And Allah knows best,

Mufti Waseem Khan

quran travel the earth

The Earth is green and beautiful, and Allah has appointed you his stewards over it. The whole Earth has been created a place of worship, pure and clean. Whoever plants a tree and diligently looks after it until it matures and bears fruit is rewarded. If a Muslim plants a tree or sows a field and humans and beasts and birds eat from it, all of it is love on his part.

Here are some beautiful verses from the Holy Quran on the creation of the Earth and its beauty.

8 Thought-Provoking Verses About Earth from the Quran

Short Answer:

Allah Almighty told us that He entrusted us with being vicegerents on earth; the best of mankind are those who fulfill their purpose of creation and spread holistic goodness on earth, and the worst are those who reject and deter from their purpose and spread holistic corruption on earth.

With that in mind, let’s look at some thought-provoking verses about the creation of the earth in the Quran, and how the Creator Allah Almighty uses it to teach us major lessons about our purpose in life.

………….

Assalamo Alaikom,

Prophet Muhammad - A Pioneer of the Environment

Thank you for your question.

Purpose of Creation

The Quran is the Direct Speech of the Creator to all mankind. Since, He is The One who created the heavens and the earth and everything therein, He gives a holistic understanding of the purpose of what He created.

" title="Advertise and Market to Muslims" target="_blank">Ads by Muslim Ad Network

“How could He not know His Own creation? For He ˹alone˺ is the Most Subtle, All-Aware.” (Quran 67: 14 )
˹Remember˺ when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to place a successive ˹human˺ authority on earth.” They asked ˹Allah˺, “Will You place in it someone who will spread corruption there and shed blood while we glorify Your praises and proclaim Your holiness?” Allah responded, “I know what you do not know…” (Quran 2:30)

Prophetic instructions to preserve the earth

The Prophet [saw] forbade transgressing in the use of water even for ritual ablution.

It was narrated from ‘Amr bin Shu’aib from his father, from his grandfather, that:

A Bedouin came to the Prophet and asked him about ablution. He showed him how to perform it washing each part of the body three times. Then he said: ‘This is the ablution, and whoever does more than this, has done evil, transgressed the limits and wronged himself. ‘” [Sunan Ibn Majah]

Also, the Prophet [saw] encouraged the planting of trees and that it serves as an ongoing charity for the one who does it with the right intention.

Narrated Anas: that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “No Muslim plants a plant or sows a crop, then a person, or a bird, or an animal eats from it, except that it will be a charity for him.” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi]
And Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet [saw] said, “If the Final Hour comes while you have a palm-cutting in your hands and it is possible to plant it before the Hour comes, you should plant it.” [Al Adab Al Mufrad]

8 Thought-Provoking Verses about the Earth from the Quran

Reflecting on allah's beauty in nature, 1- the importance of not associating others in worship with the creator who created and facilitated our life for us.

˹He is the One˺ Who has made the earth a place of settlement for you and the sky a canopy; and sends down rain from the sky, causing fruits to grow as a provision for you. So do not knowingly set up equals to Allah ˹in worship˺. (Quran 2:22)

2- Acknowledging that The One who created is The One who has perfect knowledge of all things

He is the One Who created everything in the earth for you. Then He turned towards the heaven, forming it into seven heavens. And He has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things (2:29)

3- The importance of being grateful for The One who created this earth and provided for us through it

“And a sign for them is the dead earth. We have brought it to life and brought forth from it grain, and from it they eat. And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and grapevines and caused to burst forth therefrom some springs – That they may eat of His fruit. And their hands have not produced it, so will they not be grateful ?” (Quran 36: 33-35)

4- How Allah subjected to humans’ creations from the heavens and the earth for their convenience

“It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky and produced thereby some fruits as provision for you and subjected for you the ships to sail through the sea by His command and subjected for you the rivers. And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous [in orbit], and subjected for you the night and the day.” (Quran 14: 32- 33)
“It is Allah who subjected to you the sea so that ships may sail upon it by His command and that you may seek of His bounty, and perhaps you will be grateful. And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth – all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (Quran 45: 12-13)

5- Corruption spread on earth when people turned away from their Creator and forgot their purpose of creation

“Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].” (Quran 30: 41)

6- How pondering on the creations on earth and our own creation helps us connect with The Creator

“On earth there are signs for those with sure faith– and in yourselves too, do you not see?–” (51: 20-21)

7- Just like the earth was created for a purpose, it will come to an end for a purpose

“Then when the Horn is blown with one blast. And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow – Then on that Day, the Resurrection will occur,” (69: 13-15)

8- The earth will witness and speak about everything that happened on it by mankind

“When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake  And the earth discharges its burdens  And man says, “What is [wrong] with it?” – That Day, it will report its news  Because your Lord has commanded it.” (Quran 99: 1-5)

We are surrounded by the creation of Allah in the heavens and the earth to reflect on and everything has a purpose.

What Is the Real Purpose of Life?

Just like we are concerned that everything in nature doesn’t get corrupted and that it continues to fulfill its purpose; We must also be concerned that we too, and our souls, don’t get corrupted; and that we fulfill our own purpose of creation.

And Allah knows best.

I hope this helps.

Salam and please keep in touch.

Reflection No. 290 on Q 22:46 – Traveling in Islam

Traveling has been mentioned often in the Quran and is a way to achieve insight and wisdom.  It broadens the horizons of the human mind. It gives a new perspective of life and can help change a person. The earth is a classroom that offers many lessons for those who open the eyes and ears of their hearts. To travel is to progress in many ways.

Islam emphasizes the following types of travel: 1. To learn from the remains of those who have passed away . Despite their arrogance and rejection of God they departed from this world and were placed in a small grave. The ruins of their once glorious power is a sign that nothing remains on this earth, only that which is for Allah. The Quran says: Say, travel over the land and then observe what was the fate of the guilty ones (Q 27:69). 2. To safeguard faith . Sometimes the homeland does not allow for the freedom to practise Islam as necessary. The Quran says: O My servants who believe! surely My earth is vast, therefore Me alone should you serve (Q 29:56). 3. For knowledge and spirituality, sustenance, or relaxation . All these are valid and recommended reasons for traveling. Imam Sadiq (a) narrates that the Holy Prophet (s) told Imam Ali (a): O Ali, it does not befit an intelligent person to travel except for three reasons; for work and sustenance, to gather for the Hereafter, and for enjoyment that is not haram ( Wasā’il , v. 8, p. 248, H. 2).

Traveling for Hajj and Ziyārat come under the last category. These travels fulfill the obligations, increase spirituality, and help strengthen faith and attachments to all that is Divine.

Traveling in harmony with others makes the trip pleasant and rewarding. Islam emphasizes good Akhlāq with fellow travelers. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a) advised his son, Luqmān, on how to behave when traveling with others: When you travel in the company of people, consult with them frequently about each of your affairs, make them smile often, and be generous in sharing your provisions with them. When they call you, answer them, and when they ask for your help, assist them. ( Bihār ) The Imam also said: The ideal courteousness during a journey entails sharing one’s provisions freely, joking light-heartedly in matters that do not displease Allah, hardly ever disputing with your traveling companions, and never telling tales about them once you have parted company from them. (Sh. Sadūq, Al-Āmālī )

Traveling is very common today. The world has become small and families travel constantly for pleasure as well as for religion. As millions of Shī‘ah Muslims head to Iraq during the fortieth ( arba‘īn ) of the Shuhadā of Karbala, it would be good to remember this verse when you travel and remind yourself of the importance of opening up your heart to gain insight as you travel. That should be the most important fruit of your travels.

Chapter (3) sūrat āl ʿim'rān (The Family of Imrān)

Sahih International : Similar situations [as yours] have passed on before you, so proceed throughout the earth and observe how was the end of those who denied.

Pickthall : Systems have passed away before you. Do but travel in the land and see the nature of the consequence for those who did deny (the messengers).

Yusuf Ali : Many were the Ways of Life that have passed away before you: travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who rejected Truth.

Shakir : Indeed there have been examples before you; therefore travel in the earth and see what was the end of the rejecters.

Muhammad Sarwar : Different traditions existed in the past. Travel in the land and find out about the fate of those who rejected the Truth.

Mohsin Khan : Many similar ways (and mishaps of life) were faced by nations (believers and disbelievers) that have passed away before you (as you have faced in the battle of Uhud), so travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved (in the Oneness of Allah, and disobeyed Him and His Messengers).

Arberry : Divers institutions have passed away before you; journey in the land, and behold how was the end of those that cried lies.

Sahih International:

Say, "Travel through the land; then observe how was the end of the deniers."

It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are in ships and they sail with them by a good wind and they rejoice therein, there comes a storm wind and the waves come upon them from everywhere and they assume that they are surrounded, supplicating Allah, sincere to Him in religion, "If You should save us from this, we will surely be among the thankful."

So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.

So travel freely - o idolaters - on earth for a period of four months after which there will be no treaty nor any indemnity. be certain that you will never escape allah’s punishment and retribution if you continue to disbelieve in him. also be certain that allah will humiliate the disbelievers, by their being killed or taken captive in the world, and by their entering the fire on the day of rising. this includes those who broke their treaties as well as those who had open treaties without any fixed period. as for those with whom you made a treaty for a fixed period their treaty will be honoured until the end of the specified period, even if this is longer than four months., so travel freely (o mushrikun - see v. 2:105) for four months (as you will) throughout the land, but know that you cannot escape (from the punishment of) allah, and allah will disgrace the disbelievers., phonetic transliteration.

QURAN MIRACLES SUBJECT WISE

Quran miracles surah wise, roundness & spherical shape of the earth mentioned in quran.

In early Mesopotamian mythology, the world was portrayed as a flat disk supported on four giant world-bearing elephants which stand on the back of an even more massive Space This space you see around in this universe in between stars and planets and on small scales inside atoms is actually not empty. This empty space which Details ">space -traveling turtle with a hemispherical Sky O humankind earth’s atmosphere this mere thin air protects life on Earth by providing oxygen for the breathing of animals and Carbon dioxide for Plants. Details ">sky dome above. And this forms the basis for old world maps like those of Anaximander and Hecataeus of Miletus.

But the Quran informs us that the Earth is round almost 1400 years ago in Surah Naziat verse 30, Surah Zumar verse 5 and Surah Rahman verse 33.

وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَاهَا

And after that He spread the Earth I have already told you about the sun in detail in part 17 and 18 therefore now starting from Earth the 3rd planet from the sun. Earth is 4.5Billion years Old, Details ">earth . Surah Naziat 79:30

He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the Sun Now after understanding this come to the celestial bodies again. You already realized what a star is and that how big is our sun i.e so big that you can place Details ">sun and the Moon The Moon is the Earth’s only real satellite and was formed 4.6 billion years ago around some 30–50 million years after the formation of the solar system. Details ">moon , each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver. Surah Zumar 39:5

O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority. Surah Rahman 55:33

Miracle In The Use Of Word “دَحَاهَا”

In Surah Naziat verse 30 the word used is “دَحَاهَا” translated by early Commentators of Quran as “spreading out” but in its wordings, it contains all the meanings for the coming generations. That is for the previous human generations this verse was giving a sense as per their time, and for us again, the verse has the capacity that it gives new meaning as per our modern understanding of science. In past the more appropriate meanings were ignored because people were not able to understand and connect those meanings with the verse. The meaning of the verb “دَحَاهَا” is more than just an ordinary setting or expanding of a thing. The concept of roundness is also present in other words derived from “د حو.” which describes setting out in a circle i.e to spread or ‘expand out giving something a round shape. Also, it means the place of laying of eggs of Ostrich and sometimes the Ostrich Egg itself. Also as in phrase دحا البطن The belly was or became large, distended, inflated. That is it indicates something spherical, rounded, or arched, not something that is flat or square. Now look that if we take the shape of Ostrich egg it is not completely round but somewhat oval-shaped and the Miracle is that just recently we came to know that the shape of the earth is not a circle or round shape but spheroid with depressions at the poles.

Arabic Word “يُكَوِّرُ” And View Of The Earth From Space

Surah rahman use of word “أَقْطَارِ” miracle, detailed analysis of the important words used is given below, دَحَاهَا.

The fourth word of verse 79:30 is divided into two morphological segments. A verb and object pronoun. The perfect verb فعل ماض is the third person masculine singular. The verb’s root is (د ح و). The attached object pronoun is third person feminine singular. This root occurs only once in the Quran, as the form I verb daḥā (دَحَىٰ).

(د ح و) : Spread, spread out, expanded or extended, made wide or ample/ also means, he compressed her, or lay with her. The place of laying of eggs of Ostrich. دحا البطن The belly was or became large, distended, inflated. “Medahi”: Rounded stones.

يُكَوِّرُ

The fifth word of verse 39:5 is a form II imperfect verb فعل مضارع. The verb is third person masculine singular and is in the indicative mood مرفوع. The verb’s root is (ك و ر). This root occurs three times in the Quran as the form II verb kuwwirat (كُوِّرَتْ)

V – 3rd person masculine singular (form II) imperfect verb فعل مضارع

(ك و ر): I کورالعمامة: He wound/folded the turban in a spiral form and folded it up. کورہ: He threw him down. It also means be eclipsed. To wind, twist. Kawwaraکور : to revolve upon, fold up, flow into, shroud, make one thing lap over an other, cause to intertwine. Takwîr تکویر: The act of folding.

أَقْطَارِ

The ninth word of verse 55:33 is a masculine plural noun and is in the genitive case مجرور. The noun’s root is (ق ط ر). This root occurs five times in the Quran, in three derived forms.

N – genitive masculine plural noun اسم مجرور

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

By Jonathan Corum

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

Many cities lie inside the path of the total eclipse, as shown below, the width of which varies from 108 miles to 122 miles.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

People watch the 2017 total eclipse at Southern Illinois University.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

During the eclipse, the sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of totality will be able to see the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the sun, NASA explains. Outside the path of totality, viewers will see a partial eclipse with the moon covering varying degrees of the sun.

The Carbon Footprint of Football: Unveiling the Dark Side of the Game

The Carbon Footprint of Football: Unveiling the Dark Side of the Game

Football is the most popular sport in the world, attracting a global fanbase of 3.5 billion . Unfortunately, its massive following and international reach has a dark side: a significant carbon footprint. From stadium and energy consumption to travel-related emissions and waste production, the beautiful game is leaving a negative mark on planet Earth.

The Environmental Impact of Football

Independent clubs’ emissions have proven difficult to calculate as each club’s respective output varies depending on size and location . Travel by fans and teams, however, has consistently been shown to be the main culprit behind football’s negative impact on the environment.

It is estimated that the global football industry produces more than 30 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, roughly the equivalent of the total emissions generated by Denmark.

Major Tournaments’ Contribution

  • Men’s World Cup 2022

The Men’s World Cup 2022 in Qatar produced approximately 3.63 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). Transportation accounted for 52% of the total (1.89 million tCO2e), while accommodation generated 20% of the total emissions (728,404 tCO2e). Temporary (162,556 tCO2e) and permanent (654,658 tCO2e) facility/venue construction combined accounted for 23% of the total. Other contributing factors included logistics, media, materials and merchandise, venue operations as well as electricity, heating, and cooling.

While FIFA said the tournament would be carbon-neutral due to offsetting claims, data clearly shows that the pledge did not materialise. The tournament also failed to adhere to recommendations issued by the Swiss Fairness Commission – Switzerland’s self-regulatory body of advertising and communications industry.

Climate analysts have expressed that carbon offsetting claims are being exploited as the main ground of net zero claims for sporting events. Offsetting acts as an excuse for circumventing actual emission reductions and can create a threatening misconception of “climate neutrality” when emissions are high or rising.

  • Men’s Euro 2024

As mentioned above, travel creates the biggest carbon footprint across football. No other sport sees fans travel so frequently and in such great numbers as football. The Men’s Euro in 2020 was staged across 11 European countries. This summer’s tournament is taking place in Germany, with UEFA investing €32 million (US$34.6 million) in sustainability initiatives to make the Men’s Euro 2024 the greenest one yet.

This includes a €29 ($31.4) flat rate discounted ticket to travel with Deutsche Bahn – Germany’s national railway system – and free 36-hour local transport for ticket holders to encourage fans to travel by rail. The degree to which this will help limit emissions or change behaviours is yet to be seen. The majority of fans will not be local, meaning a substantial proportion will be travelling to Germany from other European nations and beyond. This year’s tournament is predicted by UEFA to generate ~490,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with ~400,000 coming from fan travel (>80% of total). Germany’s extensive rail network, existing football and transport infrastructure and green stadia limit the emissions produced from other factors outside of transport.

  • Future World Cups

The path to a greener football future seems to be heading in a different direction with future World Cups en route to get bigger. The 2026 and 2030 men’s tournaments are set to be hosted across multiple continents with more teams (format increasing to include 48 teams from 32). The 2026 event will take place across the US, Canada, and Mexico while the 2030 tournament was awarded to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco with Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay also hosting matches to mark the tournament’s centenary.

Beyond location, travel, and stadium construction, football governing bodies need to consider World Cups’ brand sponsors in order to reduce the tournament’s carbon footprint. Even if the 2022 event had been carbon neutral, it still featured sponsorship from Qatar Airways and Qatar Energy. FIFA has also been under fire for not prioritising the environment in its bidding process, awarding Saudi Arabia, the oil giant, as host of the 2034 event.

Expansion of European Football: An Environmental Threat?

Next season will see Men’s European club football expand further, partially a result of the European Super League proposal, with an additional 177 fixtures across UEFA’s three major tournaments – Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League.

BBC Sport research suggests the fixture expansion could lead to fans and teams flying approximately 2 billion air miles across the 2024/25 season, up from 1.5 billion in 2022/23. The projected figures suggest the release of almost 500,000 tonnes of GHG which will contribute to global warming. For a deeper analysis, the 2022/23 season (32 teams) emitted 368,388 tonnes of CO2e from fan and team travel. The projected emissions for the 2024/25 season (36 teams) due to fan and team travel is 480,717 tonnes of CO2e.

Green Football?

In 2016, the United Nations launched the Sports for Climate Action Framework , calling on signatories to reduce their emissions and reach net-zero by 2040. The Premier League signed up in 2021, with clubs including Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs and Newcastle as well as non-league and European teams making independent pledges. FIFA shared it aims to reduce emissions across its events as part of its climate strategy and hope to be carbon neutral as an organisation by 2040.

UEFA joined the UN Race to Zero campaign in 2022, vowing to halve emissions across its events by 2030. Additionally, UEFA introduced sustainability guidelines to help clubs improve: energy and water consumption, building infrastructure, food and apparel manufacturing.

More Is Needed

On 6 March, 2024, UEFA launched its Carbon Footprint Calculator , an online tool designed to help clubs and teams manage their carbon emissions, and not only from travel but also from purchased goods, facilities and services. The calculator, which has third-party verification, has been in development for two years.

“The UEFA Carbon Footprint Calculator embodies our ambition to showcase that football can be part of the solution in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions,” explained UEFA Vice-President Laura McAllister.

“By providing stakeholders with the tools and guidance, we are facilitating collective action towards a more sustainable future for our sport and the planet. Together, we can demonstrate to governments, investors, fans, and commercial partners that football is committed to addressing climate change in a unified and strategic manner.”

The tool will also help clubs “understand” what their carbon footprint is and push them to cut emissions, according to UEFA Director of Sustainability Michele Uva.

Climate-Conscious Young Football Fans

Research conducted by Rising Ballers , a UK-based football digital media agency and platform, found that 72% of Gen Z football fans care about the environment, with 61% believing football should be more eco-friendly.

The findings also showed that 40.2% of young football fans suspect waste production contributes to football’s high carbon footprint the most (32.5% transport, 18.1% stadiums, 9.2% food and drink). Although waste production is a significant contributing factor, it does not outweigh transport. Further awareness and education, including on green transport when travelling to and from matches, is a way forward to promote collective effort in reducing football’s carbon footprint.

The research also demonstrated that there is a new sponsorship opportunity for brands in football’s evolving eco-aware landscape: 54% of young football fans would consider purchasing from a more environmentally sustainable brand over a mainstream option. This gives sponsors ample room to capitalise on football’s convergence with other cultures, including sustainability. Football fans are more than what meets the eye – they are complex consumers with many habits and interests that extend beyond the game. Tapping into these interests provides an exciting activation portal for brands to engage this huge global community.

Future Outlook

The young generation shape much of how football functions today – from brand sponsorships to industry decision making and matchday content consumption. By promoting green activity and raising awareness on climate change to young fans, football has the power to reduce its carbon emissions, progress towards net-zero goals and become greener in the long-term.

The environment affects football by providing appropriate weather conditions and natural resources such as the pitch to play. The environmental impact of football will affect its ability to function properly in the future if governing bodies fail to account for carbon emissions. How are we supposed to continue to enjoy the beautiful game if we do not care for the environment which enables it to flourish? Food for thought.
