quando inizia world padel tour

The World Padel Tour: Past, Present & Future

World Padel Tour & PADEL1969

The World Padel Tour (WPT) is an international padel circuit and tournament that takes place every year. As the biggest padel tournament in the world, it’s a given that padel fans want to know more.

In this article, we will cover the tour’s evolution, its rounds, locations, and chronology over the years. We list past winners and predict what we think the future looks like for this tour.

In other words, we will take you through the entire timeline — past, present, and future — of the WPT. Let’s get started!

About the World Padel Tour

The World Padel Tour organization was initially formed in 2012, after which it started hosting professional tournaments from the year 2013 onwards. It is now responsible for most kinds of tournaments excluding the Padel World Championships and Continental Championships. It has its headquarters in Spain.

Before this circuit was established, the Padel Pro Tour (PPT) was in place from 2005 to 2012, hosting international professional players and their tournaments. However, the entity behind the event was quite disorganized, which led to the creation of the WPT.

The WPT is officially recognized by the International Padel Federation (IPF). Since 2013, the WPT has popularized padel as a sport across several countries of the world, hosting their tournaments in multiple countries throughout the years.

The WPT Tournaments

Every year, the WPT hosts several tournaments and competitions across different countries and ability levels. Initially, these competitions were only held in Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, but recently, other countries like the UAE, Sweden, Great Britain, and the US have hosted tournaments as well.

Tournaments are divided into three categories, Challenger, Open, and Master. Each category awards a certain amount of points for a win, which then increases the player’s position in WPT rankings.

The Challenger category of the WPT is at the bottom of the tournament hierarchy. It can be a good way for the participating teams to earn more points and develop their skills in order to participate in the subsequent tiers of the tour.

As the “easiest” category, challenger tournaments have lower standards when it comes to participation, along with a smaller prize.

The Open round is quite popular in terms of the tournaments that the WPT hosts. Here, 96 teams (or pairs) can enter the competition in the men’s category and 56 teams for the women’s category. The Open round allows the winners to score up to 1,000 points depending on the level that they are playing at.

Apart from the points or rankings, the Open tournaments also extend the prizes awarded to the winners.

The Master round is the next tier in the hierarchy. These competitions increase the points received per win, (1,700) as well as the prizes awarded to the winners. In Master level tournaments, 100 teams for the men’s category and 60 teams for the women’s category can enter.

Master Final

The Master Final is the biggest tournament of the season. Here, the top rankers of the Master category go head to head to determine the final winners of the tournament season. Generally, eight teams are allowed to compete in this round for both men and women.

Qualifying for a WPT Tournament

Not just anyone can compete in a WPT tournament. In order to qualify for any of the aforementioned categories, players will have to go through several qualifier rounds, these include:

  • Pre-qualifying rounds where several teams compete at three different levels and move on to the next level based on their rankings.
  • Qualifying rounds where winning teams from the previous rounds compete with each other to enter the main tournament, where the rankings determine the final teams.
  • The main tournament where the Challenger, Open, Master and Master Final categories are carried out to determine a winner.

Chronology of the Competition

To give you a better idea of what the competition has looked like over the years and how it has evolved, we will now take you through the past WPT tournaments . This will include where these competitions were held and the winners that emerged.

This was the first competition of the WPT. Its rounds were held in Spain, Argentina, and Portugal. The overall winners of this tournament were Fernando Belasteguin and Juan Martin Diaz from Argentina in the men’s category.

For the women’s category, the winners were Elisabeth Amatriain and Patricia Llaguno from Spain. In both cases, the finals were held in Madrid.

The rounds of the World Padel Tour of 2014 were held across Spain, Argentina, and Portugal, along with the addition of Dubai.

The men’s category saw Maxi Sanchez and Carlos Gutierrez from Argentina as the winners this year. The Spanish twins Mapi and Majo Sanchez Alayeto topped the women’s category.

The third edition of the WPT was held in Spain, Argentina, Portugal, UAE, and Monaco, and included players from several different nationalities, including Brazil, Spain, and Argentina, pointing to the increasing popularity of the sport across the world.

By the end of this tour, Argentinian Maxi Sanchez once again claimed the top spot, this time while playing next to Juan Martin Diaz from Spain. The women’s tournament saw Spaniards Marta Marrero and Alejandra Salazar as the new female champions.

Now well established, the WPT of 2016 was once again held in the countries of Spain, Argentina, and Monaco. As had happened in previous years Spanish, Argentinian and Brazilian players dominated the competition.

The Master Final was held in Madrid in Spain and saw Francisco Navarro from Spain and Carlos Gutierrez from Argentina as the winners in the men’s category while Alejandra Salazar and Marta Marrero from Spain defended their champion status in the women’s category.

By 2017, padel had spread far and wide, which is why for the 2017 WPT, competitions were held in more countries than ever before. WPT tournaments were held in Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Andorra, UK, USA, France, Sweden, and Belgium, and some of the year’s biggest competitions took place in Miami and Granada.

Although locations and participants were more diverse this year, the newcomers couldn’t hold their own against countries like Argentina, Spain, and Brazil, which once again lead the competition.

Both the men’s and women’s tournaments saw previous winners make a comeback for the Master Final. 2013 winner Fernando Belasteguin crowned himself champion alongside Brazilian Pablo Lima, while the Spanish Sanchez Alayeto twins that won the 2014 WPT regained the women’s title.

Male Padel Player

In 2018, the tournament was held in the countries of Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Sweden, and Andorra, across major cities like Alicante, Buenos Aires, Valladolid and Granada.

By the end of this tour, the men’s category saw Fernando Belasteguin from Argentina and Pablo Lima from Brazil remain as reigning champions, whereas the women’s category saw Alejandra Salazar and Marta Marrero from Spain as the winners.

In 2019, the tournament was held during its usual season from March 2019 to December 2019. It was held in Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, France, UK, Sweden, and Belgium with several other participating countries.

This time, the Master Final was held in Barcelona. In the men’s category, the winners were Alejandro Galan from Spain and Pablo Lima from Brazil. In the women’s category, the winners were Alejandra Salazar and Ariana Sanchez.

The World Padel Tour of 2020 started in February but had to halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic . It restarted in June of the same year and was held in Spain, Argentina, Portugal, Sweden, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, and Belgium.

In the men’s category, Fernando Belasteguin and Agustin Tapia from Argentina emerged as winners while Gemma Triay and Lucia Sainz from Spain were the winners in the women’s category.

The WPT of 2021 was the ninth edition of this tournament. It was held in Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Sweden, Italy, and Mexico since April. The Master Finals were held in Madrid, Spain, in December. In the men’s category, the winners were Ale Galan and Juan Lebron. They won against Sanyo Gutiérrez and Agustín Tapia. This win was absolutely amazing and the performance was in style for the win of the biggest title of the season.

In the women’s category, the winners were Paula Josemaría and Ariana Sánchez. They made a record as they became the youngest pair to become Masters as they won the masters final in Madrid in 2021.

quando inizia world padel tour

In 2022 WPT has got new pressure from Premier Padel tournaments and they have been under pressure also from Professional Padel Player Association regarding prize money. Still, it has been a very interesting year with multiple new locations for WPT competitions and even new exhibitions like in Acapulco, Mexico which are the roots of the Padel. The season started with US-style in Miami Padel Open and it raised great attention to Padel in the United States. This year the master final is in Barcelona from the 15th to the 18th of December.

If you want to stay up to date with the latest news on Padel, follow us on Instagram , Facebook or TikTok , we post regular updates on important competitions, matches, and padel news in general!

The Future of the Tour

With the growth and increasing popularity of padel , we predict that the World Padel Tour will only continue to get better. As the sport spreads across the globe, new players will come on the scene, more athletes will choose to compete professionally, and the competition will get even more exciting. As the WPT draws larger crowds and the attention of mainstream media, its likely that more countries will be putting up their hand to host rounds of the tournament. We’ll see new destinations, in more diverse locations, added to the circuit.

Catch All the Action of the WPT

Although the different tournaments and competitions might seem a little confusing at first, it’s not too hard to get the hang of how the WPT works. Athletes compete at several tournaments throughout the year, increasing their rankings with each win.

Those in the Master category who make it to the top of the rankings get to participate in the Master Finals, which determines the WPT winners for the year.

If you’ve never watched professional padel before, we highly encourage you to tune in for a WPT competition. Seeing top players at work is sure to blow your mind. In fact, if you’ve joined a padel club , you might be able to watch it surrounded by other padel lovers like yourself!

Sweet blog! I found it while searching on Yahoo News.

World Padel Tour is very good tournament for international development of Padel. Good to see!

We agree with you. They have definitely created a strong foundation for professional players’ development worldwide. This is because they have been the first tournament for professional players. Currently, competition between APT and Premier Padel is a new situation for World Padel Tour organizers. We see that all the competition, also on the professional tournament level, is good for the Padel market, Padel junior players, and any person who is playing Padel.

World Padel Tour 2023: the calendar is taking shape

quando inizia world padel tour

Little by little, we discover the 2023 calendar of the World Padel Tour. One thing is certain, the circuit is continuing its policy of international expansion.

A season that will begin in February in Mallorca .

Always more padel in Scandinavia...

The Scandinavian countries are becoming lands of padel. And Finland, which had a late start, is catching up with its neighbors at high speed.

Finland is a country particularly oriented by its Swedish neighbor. What could be more normal than to follow in the footsteps of one of the most advanced countries in terms of development of the padel.

Finland, which has more than 5,5 million inhabitants per 1000 runs, is expected to see its number of players from padel close to 100.000 practitioners in 2023.

It now has a stage in Tampere, a city located in the south of the country. A logical continuation for this city which had already hosted an exhibition of World Padel Tour last June/July.

From August 30 to September 3, 2023, Finland will therefore host its first Open.

Finland builds the first stadium dedicated solely to competitions padel. THE World Padel Tour will stop there in 2023

5 more dates confirmed

Le World Padel Tour or associated bodies have already confirmed the following dates for 2023. The WPT strengthen its positions in Latin America :

  • February 14 to 19: Palma de Mallorca (Spain)
  • February 21 to 26: Abu Dhabi Masters (UAE)
  • March 7 to 12: La Rioja (Argentina)
  • March 14 to 19: Santiago (Chile)
  • March 21 to 26: Asunción (Paraguay)

We should also see many 2022 milestones repeat in 2023 like the Reus Open , the Alicante Open or even the Menorca Open around next October.

Premier Padel and World Padel Tour agree to unify tours in historic move

quando inizia world padel tour

In a massive breakthrough for the professional game, Premier Padel and the World Padel Tour are to be unified as a single global professional tour, called Premier Padel, from 2024.

The move follows the acquisition of World Padel Tour (WPT) by Premier Padel owners Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) after months of negotiations between QSI, the International Padel Federation (FIP) and the Professional Padel Association (the founder of Premier Padel) with Damm, the owner of Setpoint Events which organises the World Padel Tour (WPT).

The agreement follows over a year and a half of public fallout between the rival tours since QSI (owners of Paris St Germain FC) first partnered with FIP to create Premier Padel.

The agreement will see QSI acquire the business assets of WPT and signifies the resolution of outstanding disputes between the parties, including those affecting QSI, FIP and the professional padel players who have competed in both tours.

Throughout the remainder of the 2023 calendar year, the separate WPT and Premier Padel tours will be played as planned, while the unification of the competitions for the next calendar year – forming a single Premier Padel global tour under the governance of FIP starting in 2024 – is worked on.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, World Padel Tour, established in 2013, has served as the pre-eminent tour in the sport. It has featured over 26 men’s and women’s tournaments across 14 countries, boasting 17 global sponsors and television broadcasting rights spanning more than 150 countries.

Premier Padel – the official professional padel tour governed by FIP and backed by the PPA and the International Padel Players Association (IPPA) – was launched by QSI as a rival circuit in 2022.

quando inizia world padel tour

Over 500 players from around the world competed in Premier Padel tournaments in its first year, played in some of the most iconic venues in sports history, including at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris.

Premier Padel has secured multi-year broadcast agreements that cover 180+ countries reaching over 150 million households, while the inaugural 2022 Premier Padel season attracted 22.7 million views on YouTube. Over 110 leading professional female players joined Premier Padel in March this year.

Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Chairman of Qatar Sports Investments and Premier Padel, said: “This is an historic moment for the sport of padel, ultimately seeing the two leading professional padel tours unified as one single global Premier Padel tour under the governance of the International Padel Federation – starting next year.

“As the fastest-growing sport globally, QSI is proud to be at the heart of driving the development of padel professionally all around the world, always placing the players at the centre of our mission to grow the sport everywhere. We are very excited for this next chapter.”

Demetrio Carceller Arce, Damm’s Executive Chairman, said: “The World Padel Tour is now beginning a new stage led by QSI, who will contribute to speeding up the tour’s international growth.”

Carceller Arce added: “Damm is proud to have contributed to the development of professional padel, making the World Padel Tour a global benchmark, with over four million followers. This has helped padel become the world’s fastest growing sport in recent years, with very positive progress for the entire padel industry.”

Luigi Carraro, President of the International Padel Federation, said: “As the governing body of padel worldwide, we are delighted to see the coming together of two great tours into one fantastic global circuit.

“The International Padel Federation thanks Damm for greatly contributing to the sport of padel through the World Padel Tour since its inception in 2013. We now look forward to the next fantastic phase of development and growth of professional padel under Premier Padel, which will benefit the whole padel community, including the national federations and – most importantly – the players and next generation.”

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.

No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
