Virginia Tech understands that students, faculty, and staff will have the opportunity to visit different parts of the world. Planning ahead to learn about recommended or required vaccinations helps take the stress out of international travel. The safest way to explore is to determine what factors await you in your destination and make decisions before you leave.

It takes time for vaccines/medications to take effect. If you delay your appointment, you may not be properly protected when you arrive in your destination country.

Schiffert Health Center offers a number of travel-specific vaccinations by appointment for those students who are leaving the country. Before making an appointment, become familiar with the  Centers for Disease Control’s travel information  and be sure to read the  Travel Information Sheet (PDF | 68KB)  while planning your trip.

Schiffert Health Center offers these travel vaccinations:

Post-Travel

Three months after your return from any international travel, please complete the Tuberculosis Risk Assessment Form (PDF | 222KB) . If you place a check next to any section, please call 540-231-7621 to schedule an appointment for a TB test.

University Student Health Services offers free in-depth travel consultations for students planning to travel abroad.  Consultations include a review of recommended vaccines, travel-related prescriptions, and safety information. 

Students are responsible for the cost of prescriptions and travel vaccines , which can be purchased through Student Health or the student's pharmacy of choice.  Student Health offers many of the vaccinations recommended for international travel.  Click on the link to view a list of  vaccine fees  at Student Health.

Scheduling An Appointment

Plan ahead!   Schedule your travel appointment at least 6 to 8 week s prior to your departure date  because some travel vaccines take several weeks to become effective.  

• Travel appointments must be scheduled by phone.   Appointments are available at both the Monroe Park (804-828-8828) and VCU Medical Center (804-828-9220) clinics.  
• Complete Student Health's online Travel Health Form prior to your appointment.   You will be able to access this form through our  Web Portal  once you have scheduled your travel appointment.
• If you are doing a study abroad   AND your host school requires a physical exam or statement of overall health, you will need to 1) schedule a Travel Physical  (45 minutes), 2) bring your school forms (with your part completed!) to the appointment; and 3) complete Student Health's Travel Health Form via the Web Portal .

Special consultation appointments are available for student groups  participating in study abroad programs or in service projects, such as those providing medical or dental care abroad.  A group spokesperson is encouraged to contact Student Health to arrange a group consultation. 

Vaccination Services

Students can choose to receive travel vaccines through Student Health or an outside clinic/pharmacy.  Student Health offers an extensive variety of travel vaccines, except for Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies vaccines.  

• Students are responsible for the cost of their vaccines .   Student Health does not bill health insurance; however, students may submit receipts to their health insurance for reimbursement as applicable.
• Vaccines should be received at least thirty days before the risk of exposure for optimal benefit.

Dr. choudhary.

With more than 15 years of experience in infectious disease medicine, Sarfraz A. Choudhary, MD, FACP, of the Infectious Diseases Tropical Medicine and Travel Clinic in Lansdowne, Virginia, has special expertise in identifying hard-to-diagnose illnesses and providing care for those suffering from such diseases. He also helps healthy people prepare for exotic dream trips abroad with the right vaccinations and medications.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Choudhary is board-certified in infectious diseases, tropical medicine and travelers’ health, and internal medicine. Dr. Choudhary earned his medical degree at Punjab Medical College in Pakistan and completed his residency training in Washington, DC, at Howard University School of Health and Medicine and his fellowship in infectious diseases at Howard University Hospital.

Your doctor’s office

Carilion Clinic’s stroke team saves man’s life in 12 minutes

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - In a heartwarming tribute to the heroes of Carilion Clinic ’s Stroke Team, one man is thanking them for getting him help in record time, shedding light on the importance of swift medical intervention during a stroke.

In only 12 minutes – Carilion Clinic’s Stroke Team saved Robert Wade’s life.

“It’s hard to believe that they’re that good,” explained Wade. “But they did it.”

It was October 2023. Wade was doing laundry when he fell to the ground.

“It just hit me all at once,” added Wade. “So, it took me about a minute to realize I was not going to be able to get back to my feet.”

Wade was having a stroke. He was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and arrived 2 minutes before noon.

“I was thinking the whole time, I hope that I’m able to... walk again with my with a cane,” said Wade.

By 12:10 p.m., the medics completed the door-to-needle care, meaning they found the blocked blood supply to the brain and administered medication.

“For American Stroke Association guidelines, it should be 60 minutes or less, regardless of what hospital you’re in,” explained Carilion Clinic Stroke Program Manager R.N. Pam Flinchum. “We did it in 12. So, it just gives you an idea of where we stand as far as our timing.”

Every 40 seconds, someone has a stroke in the US. Doctors say anyone can have a stroke, even children and young adults. So, recognizing the symptoms and getting the care you need is essential.

“Every minute, nearly 2 million brain cells are lost during a stroke,” said Carilion Clinic Stroke Program Co-Director M.D. Biraj Patel. “And so there is a significant cost that happens with every minute that’s passed in the patient outcome.”

Strokes are one of the leading causes of disabilities and to recognize the symptoms, remember BE FAST . If you lose Balance, Eyesight, Face and Arm movement, or Speech then it’s Time to call for help.

“When a stroke is left untreated, or there’s a delay in treatment, that can result in a more permanent deficit, which can involve being completely dependent on other folks to take care of you, and even death,” explained Patel.

Being back on his feet - Wade is grateful for the care he received.

“Thanks for their dedication and everything that they do day in and day out to help people,” said Wade.

That makes every minute count when time matters most.

“We put a lot of work in this program,” said Flinchum. “And that just shows that this is exactly the outcomes we want every day.”

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is a Joint Commission-certified Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center.
