A Tour Of The Past

It’s easy to take for granted the history all around us. To walk past old buildings oblivious to the life they once knew. You need a kind of special lens to see it but when you do, it’s like a magical experience — probably the closest thing to time travel you’ll ever know.

So if you’re up for it, climb aboard your imaginary horse and cart, take a trip around the streets of Port Adelaide and see things in a new (but old) way.

The Maritime Museum is a good place to start to get you in the mood and soak up the atmosphere of a by-gone era, but there are heaps of treasures tucked away in other streets that show glimpses of life in a bustling port during Victorian days. Look out for the ‘soundposts’ dotted around where you can press a button to hear the stories.

Almost every aspect of life is represented here with warehouses, shops, cottages, churches, theatres and halls over 150 years old. Some restored, some converted to cafés or galleries, but all retaining their character. It’s a special thing that these buildings remain.

How about a pub crawl? There are plenty of historic hotels in the area. Some places will still pour you a beer, others you might have to settle for admiring the architecture. Large timber floors, fine iron lace work, interesting brick façades and verandahs… it’s a fascinating look at the design and construction industry of the time.

Doing a self-guided walking tour is just one way to learn about the Port’s distinct character… and now there’s an app for that.

The South Australian Maritime Museum invites you to discover some of Port Adelaide’s colonial history with their free phone app, Living in Port . There’s even an image slider feature to help you experience how life was by comparing our historic past with modern day streets. Get the app and try it out!

If you prefer something on paper instead, head down to the Visitor Information Centre and grab a  Heritage Self-Guided Walking Tour brochure . There are 42 ‘points of interest’ to plan your route around.

A Walk On The Wild Side

Some stories of the past are perhaps better left in the past, others are just a bit too curious to leave alone.

As you’d expect, Port Adelaide’s history has its sinister side too; and if you’re the sort of person who likes a haunted tale or two, you might want to brave a Ghost Crime Tour .

Based around the spookier streets and historic locations where ghosts have been known to lurk, you may discover the ‘spirit’ of Port Adelaide is alive and well. Hear the stories, consider the evidence and draw your own dark conclusions.

Loop Path Interpretive Trail

Discover more of Port Adelaide’s history as you follow the new interpretive trail around Inner Harbour. It’s almost a case of one step forward, many years back, as you take a wistful trip down memory lane.

With key lookout points along the way, this cultural walking trail highlights some of the areas of local significance through stories and images of days gone by. Enjoy the river views from the Birkenhead Bridge shelters and check out the signage along the way that has been made from recycled wharf timber.

Port Adelaide Heritage Tours

Port adelaide heritage tours.

The Port Adelaide Heritage Tours by bus or walking are outings for individuals and groups that showcase the history of the Port Adelaide region.   We have designed the excursion for Older particpants, for disabled groups and we welcome NDIS groups.

Participants will be taken on an historical journey through the Port Adelaide region, with a lively commentary from one of our tour guides. 

The Port Adelaide Heritage Tours will be give the descriptions and history of many of the old and beautiful buildings and sites that grace the Port Adelaide region and your guide will tell you their entertaining and interesting stories.

Port Adelaide is a sea port city with a unique, salty tang to its environs.  It is the historic maritime heart of South Australia.

Officially established in 1840, only four years after the foundation of South Australia, Port Adelaide played an integral role in the colonial development of South Australia.

The first migrants though, wading through mud of nearby “Port Misery” had a daunting start to a new life in the fledgling colony.  By the 1870’s however wharves were built, solid stone warehouses and homes were erected and signs of Port Adelaide’s prosperity were evident.

Tours can include a visit to our Peterhead museum for coffee or could finish with lunch or dinner at a local eatery.  

We can conduct tours from your own bus or you can join us for  one of our  scheduled tours.

NEW PORT ADELAIDE TOUR HIGHLIGHTS UNIQUE HERITAGE FOR HISTORY FESTIVAL 2022

“The History Festival is an amazing event showing so many different sides to South Australia,” says Katina. “Telling stories of the Port has been high on my radar for some time, and now I’ve created something special with the chance to share it with as many people as possible.”

The Port Adelaide Walking Tour will cover the heritage area’s beautifully preserved architecture and stories behind the buildings, as well as delve into the area’s overall history. There is also a glimpse into pub life with an included drink stop along the way.

“It will give participants an understanding of what Port life was about in its early days of settlement, but also how its evolved over the years to what it is now,” says Katina.

“There has been very little in terms of walking tours offered for travellers to the Port in recent years, and I’m hopeful this tour will spark further tourism ventures in what is a fascinating area of Adelaide.”

This tour will be the first itinerary on offer outside the CBD for Flamboyance Tours.

The walk around the Port will be held on three Sundays across May and will be continued after the History Festival on selected Sundays. Extra dates can be requested for large groups.

Sundays were chosen to compliment the laidback vibe Port Adelaide carries on this day of the week, where visitors to the area are spoilt for choice with food, drinks, and galleries to complement their tour experience.

As a show of confidence in potential for the Port Adelaide Walking Tour, Flamboyance Tours was awarded $4750 from the State Government’s Department of Environment and Water as part of the first-ever Heritage Tourism Grant program.

Flamboyance Tours was one of only seven recipients from 25 applicants and received part of a $250,000 share to promote South Australia’s heritage through places and stories.

The 2022 History Festival is the second year Flamboyance Tours has been involved in the event; their ongoing Adelaide Queer History Tour is their other offering included in this year’s program.

Port Adelaide has a long and storied history, rich with intrigue, mystery and ghost stories.

The City of PAE has developed 'Ghosts of the Port', a self-guided walking tour, researched and written by Australia’s most recognised paranormal investigator Allen Tiller.

Allen is the star of Syfy's hit TV show, Haunting: Australia. He has been investigating the paranormal for over ten years right across Australia and is known for his unique and historically factual approach to ghost hunting.

The guide includes a detailed history of 13 different haunted locations across the Port and their ghosts, including the Civic Precinct, local pubs, Lipson Street, the Lighthouse and more.

Head along to the Visitor Information Centre during opening hours to pick up your free map and guide book, then go for a walk and investigate the ghosts of the Port for yourself!

Discover the mastermind behind the world’s first School of the Air, relive the explosion that devastated the Port, and learn about the resident who had her own cell at Adelaide Gaol. 

Cheltenham Cemetery is one of the oldest in the Adelaide Metropolitan area. It commenced operation in 1876 and still to this day represents a significant part of the history of the surrounding area. This 90 minute walking tour will cover a range of sites, as well as quirky anecdotes and interesting facts to help paint the picture of South Australia’s colourful past.
