TOURISM SECTOR STRATEGIC PLAN FOR NOVA SCOTIA

nova scotia tourism news

A FRAMEWORK FOR TOURISM GROWTH

The Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) and Tourism Nova Scotia (TNS) are co-leading the development of a tourism sector strategic plan that will inspire a broader approach to economic growth and quality of life in Nova Scotia. The plan will establish a new vision for tourism, taking into consideration the needs of businesses and organizations, Nova Scotians and their communities, and traveller preferences and expectations.

Through engagement with industry, government, and community representatives, the strategic plan will be a framework everyone can use to guide their actions and investments in the coming years to build a strong and sustainable tourism industry. The plan will consider factors such as seasonality, product, people, quality, and the interconnectivity between tourism and the social, cultural, and economic health of the province.

The development of the strategic plan will be led by a project team made up of representatives from TIANS and TNS and guided by an Oversight Committee comprised of government and industry representatives. Trips to U.S., Spain that public didn't know about are 'very public things,' says Houston

N.s. premier says unpredictable schedule to blame for not sharing trip plans ahead of time.

nova scotia tourism news

Social Sharing

Premier Tim Houston may not yet have travelled as extensively as Stephen McNeil  did during the former Liberal premier's time in office, but Houston has been quieter about some of those work-related foreign visits.

According to his expense claims, Houston travelled to New York, New Jersey, and three cities in California between April 2023 and March 2024. Last month, he was out of province for four days on a trip to Spain.

None of those trips was publicly announced, but Houston said Thursday there's nothing to hide.

"Happy to talk about any trip I take," he told reporters. "These are very public things."

Details commonly released to media

During McNeil's eight years as premier, his office routinely announced foreign trips ahead of time and issued news releases afterward. There were sometimes briefings with reporters where seniors officials would talk about the rationale for the trips and elaborate on the province's goals.

Although the information was sometimes scant , details were made available to reporters —  even during trips deemed controversial , like McNeil's many trips to China.

Previous NDP and Progressive Conservative governments have also announced foreign destinations for the premier and cabinet members.

Asked why his office hasn't followed a similar pattern, Houston said it was partly due to the unpredictability of his travel schedule.

"We plan a trip and we put out a press release that we planned it, and it gets changed, we put a press release out that it got changed," said Houston, who suggested going on trips was more important than talking publicly about them.

Taxpayers should know about trips: opposition

But his political rivals disagreed.

Liberal Leader Zach Churchill said Houston was being secretive because of the limited value of the trips.

"This government hides things they don't want people to know about, so obviously the premier doesn't have a lot of confidence in what he's getting for these trips," said Churchill. "He's been travelling around the world. We have not seen what the returns are to Nova Scotians yet.

"If he's spending all this taxpayer money on travel, taxpayers should know what his schedule is, who's going with him, and what he's trying to achieve for Nova Scotians."

NDP Leader Claudia Chender agreed.

"Those trips are being paid for by Nova Scotians," she said. "We deserve to know when they happen and the details of them and what the rationale is, as has been done for the better part of many decades."

During his most recent trip to Spain, Houston visited the world's largest seafood expo in Barcelona, where more than a dozen Nova Scotia companies were part of the show.

"Having a Nova Scotia presence there was really important to us, really important to our producers," Houston told reporters, adding that he also spoke to people about offshore wind and access to health care while abroad.

Osborne Burke, president of the Nova Scotia Seafood Alliance, said the presence of the premier and other elected officials at international trade shows, such as the one in Barcelona, is a boost for the industry.

"It tells customers our government supports us in our endeavours, says Burke. "It sends a message of stability."

Nova Scotia premier criticized for travelling to Spain, U.S. without notifying public

H ALIFAX — Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is drawing opposition criticism over a recent trade mission to Spain that his office didn’t announce publicly.

In response to a reporter's question Thursday, Houston confirmed that he travelled to the country last month to attend a seafood exposition. His office later said in an email that Houston was in Barcelona and Madrid between April 20-24 on a trip to strengthen “two-way trade, tourism and research collaborations with governments.”

Houston said when they occur, his international trips are “very public things" and he does not hide his presence abroad. “We’re just trying to do the work,” he said. “I’m happy to talk about any trip I take.”

The premier’s online expense claims also show other trips that were little publicized or weren’t announced at all, including one to the New York area and another to California between April 2023 and March of this year.

The opposition Liberals and NDP said taxpayers are footing the bill for the premier’s trips and have a right to know the purpose and schedule of his travels.

“He’s been travelling around the world and we have not seen what the returns are to Nova Scotians,” Liberal Leader Zach Churchill said. “Taxpayers should know what his schedule is, who is going with him and what he is trying to achieve for Nova Scotians.”

NDP Leader Claudia Chender pointed out that Houston was deviating from what has been the standard practice of premiers informing the public about their out-of-country travel plans.

“Those trips are being paid for by Nova Scotians and we deserve to know when they happen, and the details of them and what the rationale is, as has been done for the better part of many decades,” Chender said.

But Houston defended the lack of notice of his trip by saying his schedule is often subject to change.

“The travel is usually in flux right up until the last minute depending on what’s happening in the province,” he said. “There were a number that were planned that didn’t happen.”

The premier said the trip to Spain was necessary because while in Barcelona he attended the world’s largest exposition dedicated to seafood, which is among Nova Scotia’s most important exports.

“So having a Nova Scotia presence there was really important to us and really important to our producers,” Houston said, adding that while in Spain he also had talks with various officials about health care and renewable energy, particularly offshore wind.
