We will discover our favorite Naga tourist spots. We really loved the place and it reminded us to Angeles City in Pampanga where we are based.

Naga City is located in  Camarines Sur  and it’s usually a stopover before going to Caramoan since there are daily flights coming from Manila to  Naga Airport . We passed by coming from Calaguas Island and after visiting Burias Island.

There are a lot of places preserved to show Spanish heritage. There are many bars and restaurants if you like nightlife. During the day you will find churches, cathedrals and places to visit for spending at least a couple of days in Naga.

NAGA TRAVEL GUIDE

How to get to naga city.

The best way to get from Manila to Naga is by plane to  Naga Airport . Since there are daily flights with  Cebu Pacific  and  Philippine Airlines . But if you are on a budget you can get to Naga from Manila by bus.

GETTING FROM MANILA TO NAGA BY PLANE

If you are getting to Naga from Manila by plane. There are daily flights with Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines.  Click here to check the best deals with 12 Go !

Prices are around  2500-4000 PHP  one way from Manila to Naga. The travel time will be only 45 minutes going by plane. Meanwhile you do by bus will be around 10 hours depending on the traffic.

GETTING TO NAGA CITY FROM THE AIRPORT

If you are getting to Naga City from the airport. Once in the airport you can take a bus or a jeepney going to Naga City. It will take 30 minutes and prices are around  20-30 PHP . If you prefer more comfort there are also taxis available in the terminal.

GETTING FROM MANILA TO NAGA BY BUS

If you are getting from Manila to Naga by bus. There are 450 kilometers between Naga and  Manila . If you travel by bus prices are between  700-1000 PHP . The travel time is around 10 hours.

There are bus companies going from Manila to Naga: Raymond, DLTB, Penafrancia. The bus departure is from EDSA Cubao. The schedule is from 7 am to 10 am in the morning and from 2pm to 10 pm in the afternoon. Click here to book your bus ticket in advance !

There are also buses leaving from Aranang and Pasay in Manila going to Naga City Bus Central Station which is only 1 kilometer distance from city center.

GETTING FROM NAGA BUS TERMINAL TO NAGA CITY CENTER

If you are getting to Naga City Center from Naga Bus Terminal. There is only one kilometer distance from Bus Terminal in Naga to city center you can go walking. There are tricycles  8 PHP  per person and kilometer. If you get the whole tricycle will be  40 PHP .

BEST TIME TO VISIT NAGA

Like any other place in the Philippines there are two kinds of seasons-  the dry season from November to April  and the  wet season from May to October.  It is recommended that travelers visit during dry season, especially from  December  to  February  when temperatures are much cooler and touring will most likely not be interrupted by rains and will not be really hot going around.

Naga City is small and you can go walking to most of the places. If you want to ride a jeepney prices are  8 PHP  per person. If you want to move around by tricycle prices are  8 PHP  per person and kilometer. What we loved about Naga transportation is that they are using Electric tricycles.

DAILY BUDGET TRAVEL IN NAGA

For the daily budget travel in accommodation in Naga. There are plenty of rooms and &Bs, Airbnb available all over Naga City that cost around  1000 PHP  per night. That’s just  $19 USD ! Most of the places are close to city center and Bus Terminal.

On the other hand, meals in local joints only cost  $2-3 USD  so eating here won’t burn a hole in your wallet, for sure. You might actually   $25 USD per day  if you’re traveling as a couple, like we were splitting costs in tours and the room.

Finally, you can rent a motorbike for around  $8-10 USD . A cheaper option to get around is riding the local bus with rates depending on the distance.

NAGA TOURIST SPOTS

1. basilica of our lady penafrancia.

Basilica of Our Lady Penafrancia is located two kilometers far from city center. It was built on 1976 and finished on 1981. It’s opened everyday from 5 am to 10 pm and the interior is so beautiful.

2. BICOL INDIAN SIKH TEMPLE

Bicol Indian Sikh Temple is located close to the Basilica of Penafrancia just two minutes walking distance and 2 kilometers outside the city center. We could only going around the temple which looks nice. But we weren’t allowed to go inside just taking pictures.

3. ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL

St John The Evangelist is known like Metropolitan Cathedral. It’s a Roman Catholic Cathedral and it’s popular because it was hit for typhoon but it’s still in good conditions.

4. PLAZA QUINCE MARTIRES

Plaza Quince Martires is located in city center. It’s a memorandum of people in Camarines Sur in 1896. It’s close to Plaza Rizal and San Francisco Church.

5. SAN FRANCISCO CHURCH

San Francisco Church is in front of Plaza Quince Martires in city center in Naga. The church was bombed during World War II and it was in ruins until a few years ago was constructed again.

6. PORTA MARIAE

Porta Marie was inaugurated in 2010 by Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi. It’s next to the Metropolitan Cathedral. And the most interesting thins is lighted by solar panels.

7. PLAZA RIZAL

In the heart of Naga City Plaza Rizal was built to remember the national hero of the National hero of the Philippines Jose Rizal.

The popular deer farm located in Santa Cruz. If you want to get there by bus from Naga City you have to get to Barangay Santa Cruz. There is no entrance fee.

10. HOLI ROSARY MINOR SEMINARY

Holy Rosary Minor Seminary is a Roman Catholic seminary and college run by the Archdiocese of Caceres in Naga City.

11. MALABSAY FALLS

Malabsay Falls is located on the food of Mt. Isarog an active volcano. From Naga City you can take a jeepeny to Panicuason. It costs around  30 PHP  for 45 minutes ride. Once you get there take a Habal-habal  50PHP  one way. The entrance fee is only  10 PHP .

12. PANICUASON HOT SPRING RESORT

Panicuason Hot Spring Resort and Nature Adventure is located in Panicuason. You can enjoy water activities, the bike zipline and the Tarzan swing as activities. There are also climbing, rappelling and of course relax yourself swimming around.

13. MOUNT ISAROG NATIONAL PARK

Mount Isarog  is an active volcano. Its 2,011 m high and historically was a spot where the troops of the Philippine Army and Bicolano guerillas fought against the Japan.

Nowdays Mount Isarog is a national park where you can enjoy waterfalls and springs. The entrance fee is  3500 PHP  and includes the tour and transportation from Naga City.

14. SONRISA FARM

Sonrisa farm is located in Carangcang 30 minutes drive from Naga City. There is an entrance fee  250 PHP   that includes an organic meal. They will show you their organic products and facilities around the farm.

15. DAY TRIP TO CARAMOAN

Naga is closed to Caramoan so why not spending a night in Caramoan and enjoying an amazing island hopping. You can choose whole day trip visiting 4 islands for  2500 PHP . Or short trip  1500 PHP  enjoying beaches with huge rock cliffs similar to  El Nido , in Palawan.

WHERE TO STAY IN NAGA

For the daily budget travel in accommodation in Naga. There are plenty of rooms and B&Bs, Airbnb available all over Naga City that cost around  1000 PHP  per night. That’s just  $19 USD ! Most of the places are close to city center and Bus Terminal.

The City of Naga is not your typical countryside destination. One of Cebu’s biggest festivals, the Dagitab, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated here annually. There are many spots and spectacles that make this rising business sector stand out among other Southern Cebu towns. You may have known about this industrial town because of its trekking hotspot, Mt. Naupa, but a more established tourist spot has emerged as one of the most relaxing places to go to. The City of Naga Boardwalk is a hybrid of a relaxing nature park where you can also have a peaceful walk by the sea, giving you a new bayside attraction to do your favorite recreational activities.

THE BEAUTIFUL BOARDWALK

The City of Naga Boardwalk is a great place for a morning jog or an evening stroll.

Sometimes called the Naga Baywalk, this large and spacious recreation ground has become known as the City of Naga’s most popular public park . To get to the Naga Boardwalk, you have several options. First, you can ride a public utility jeepney outside the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Punta Princesa that will bring you directly to Naga Proper. You can also ride the same jeepney at the Pardo Church. However, make sure to ask if the driver will pass by Naga since there are other jeepneys that would only stop in Minglanilla.

If you want to be assured that you will get there, you can also ride a KMK Bus at SM City Cebu. This will bring you right to the City of Naga. However, you will have to compromise by waiting in line, since there are not that many KMK buses available in Cebu.

You can get off at the Naga Church, which is right across the city’s plaza. The City of Naga Boardwalk is a few meters behind the soccer field at the center of the plaza.

Naga as a religious center has been dubbed as a pilgrimage city, with the miraculous image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia as the center of its people’s faith and devotion.  A walking tour of its churches and Spanish colonial landmarks will bring the visitor down an awe-inspiring memory lane.

PLAZA QUINCE MARTIRES

Located in the center of downtown Naga, it is home to a monument that honors the 15 Martyrs of Bicol. It was on January 4, 1897 or barely 5 days after the National Hero –Dr. Jose P. Rizal – was executed when the 11 prisoners from Bicol were also executed on the same field in Bagumabayan (now Luneta). The four others had either died in prison as a result of torture or while in exile in the island of Fernando Poo (or Fernando Pó), off the coast of Africa. The monument was built on November 29, 1926 during the American occupancy.

HOLY ROSARY MINOR SEMINARY

The alma mater of Bicol patriots and heroes, this Spanish-era structure constructed of bricks and tiles in 1785 within the Cathedral compound was originally built as vocation house. It soon emerged as the center and wellspring of ecclesiastical education in the Bicol Region. It underwent renovations but has retained its district colonial style and ambiance. It was declared by the National Historical Institute as a National Historical Landmark on January 29, 1988. The first Filipino bishop, Bishop Jorge Barlin, who hails from Bicol, finished his studies in this seminary. Prominent Bicolano hero Jose Ma. Panganiban also went to this seminary.

MUSEO DEL SEMINARIO CONCILLIAR DE NUEVA CACERES

This museum is located inside the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary and showcases the memorabilia of prominent Bicolano bishop – Jorge Barlin—and his old scholastics records and books. The museum also houses archival materials like the ancient burial jars of Bicolanos. Other museum of Bicol artifacts, culture and history are the museum of the University of Nueva Caceres, the Ateneo de Naga Museum and the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Museum.

SAN FRANCISCO BELL TOWER

The bell tower of San Francisco Church is one of the very few remnants from the old edifice of the San Francisco Church that mutely witnessed the historic event on September 17, 1898, when guerillas led by Elias Angeles and Felix Plazo besieged Governor Vicente Zaidin and the remaining Spaniards in Bicol, who were then at the church premises for the Peñafrancia fiesta. Despite the bloody encounter, the rebels harmed none of the Spanish women and children. The Spanish governor later signed the papers of capitulation which marked the end of 300 years of Spanish regime in the Bicol Region.

SAN FRANCISCO CHURCH

Constructed in the 17th century on the riverbank of Naga River which cuts through the city, this church’s infirmary and basement served as interrogation and torture halls of Filipinos who were arrested during the peak of the Filipino-Spanish War in 1898.  For the colonial masters, the Church was used as a fortress refuging 500 people during the attacks of Filipino revolutionaries Elias Angeles and Felix Plazo in September 1898.  Accepting defeat to the Angeles-Plazo forces, it is in this church’s citadels that then Civil Governor of Camarines drafted his letter of surrender consequently offering the Province of Ambos Camarines to the Filipinos. The church grounds is also rumored to have once housed the oldest hospital in Southeast Asia.

NAGA METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL

The largest church in Bicol, it is considered to be the mother of all cathedrals in the region.  With  its official name “Naga Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist”, this cathedral is one of the oldest cathedrals in the Philippines. The original structure was built near the Naga River (the location of Naga’s bustling public market) but was destroyed by a strong earthquake in the 18th century. Every September, during the Peñafrancia Fiesta, the image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is transferred to the Cathedral from the Basilica Minore, the image’s home, a religious event commonly referred to as “Traslacion”.  Millions of devotees all over the globe flock to Naga for the nine-day novena before the image is returned to her home via the Naga River in the Fluvial Procession.

PORTA MARIAE

Celebrating the 300 years of the Bicolano devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, this commemorative arch was built and formally opened on September 9, 2010. The arch, 18 meters long, 4 meters wide and 11 meters high, is a symbolic gate which imbues the journey of Marian devotion in Bicol, built on testimonies of miracles witnessed by the original native devotees called “cimarrones” through generations, as the devotion spread in other parts of the country and the world.

PEÑAFRANCIA SHRINE

The original home of the Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia was made of local materials in 1710 after Fr. Miguel Robles de Covarrubias brought the devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia to Bicol. The construction of the present structure was completed in 1750. Its bell, donated by a wealthy Chinese trader Don Simon Tuangqui during its reconstruction in 1864, still tolls on its belfry today.

PEÑAFRANCIA BASILICA MINORE

Construction on the home of the Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia, dearly called by her devotees as  “Ina”  (Mother) started in 1981 and was completed in 1985. The original image sculpted in 1710 was commissioned by Fr. Miguel de Covarrubias who, after moving to the Philippines from Spain and surviving an illness after praying to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, devoted himself to the Virgin Mary. Millions of devotees around the world visit this church every September to celebrate their faith and devotion to the blessed Virgin.

NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

In Naga, there’s always something for everyone. Majestic Mt. Isarog offers visitors the chance to experience nature at its best.  The city’s eco-adventure tourism sites in its upland barangays (by the foot of the mountain) has become very attractive to mountain trekkers and backpackers who favor mountain climbing, bird watching, and splashing in the cool waters of waterfalls and hot springs.

NAGA CITY ECOLOGY PARK

A five-hectare sprawl of tropical greenery, the park showcases various exotic plants, palms, an eco-walk maze, topiary garden, an orchid and mini-forest. Walkways, lawns, and pavilions provides for family picnics, stroll, and undisturbed appreciation of nature’s beauty.

PANICUASON HOT SPRINGS RESORT

This is one of Bicol’s secret hideaways.  Located at the bottom of a forest river ravine accessible via a private road, this resort is smack at the center of the teeming rain forest of Mt. Isarog.  Only 30 minutes away from downtown Naga, the resort is a sight to behold, a virtual jungle paradise of ancient trees and giant ferns minus the wild animals. The resort is composed of several natural pools with temperatures ranging from a cold 20 degrees Celsius to a steaming 39 degrees Celsius. Frequented by local and international visitors, it has also been featured on national TV shows. A day or two at the hot springs resort will surely uplift one’s spirit and soothe aching and weary muscles with hot spring water that emanates from the earth’s bowels.

MT. ISAROG NATURAL PARK

The highest forested peak in Southern Luzon rising at 1,966 meters above sea level, this dormant volcano serves as open sanctuary to many plants, birds and animals that are known to reside in Luzon.  Its 16 major rivers and 30-something waterfalls provide potable water to 15 towns and cities of Camarines Sur.  The travelers’ guide “The Lonely Planet” lists it as an interesting destination for trekkers and nature lovers. Declared as a national park by President Manuel Quezon in 1937, Mt. Isarog has been the subject of many researches because of its high concentration of endemic flora and fauna.

MALABSAY FALLS

Nestled on the shoulders of Mt. Isarog, this body of water is one of the wonders of Mt. Isarog National Park.  It is 40 feet high with crystal clear cold water cascading down a pond where hikers and mountaineers relax or take a break for a swim. The falls is located just within the boundaries of the Mt. Isarog Natural Park, and is a popular destination for excursions.

NABONTOLAN FALLS

Resting within the protected area of Mt. Isarog National Park and accessible through the Naga City trail, this waterfall offers a breathtaking refuge from the busy city life and allows one to commune with nature.  The rough trail going into the falls makes it quite an adventure getting in.

PLAZA DE NUEVA CACERES

This newly-built monument and plaza was for the celebration of the 62th founding anniversary of the City of Naga in 2010.  Plaza de Nueva Caceres commerates the history of Naga City (formerly called Ciudad de Nueva Caceres) starting from its  pre-colonial roots up to the Spanish rule when it became one of the four oldest cities and seats of powers of the Spaniards.  The monument’s inviting surroundings and relaxing plaza, meanwhile, shows how Naga flourishes and becomes one of the modern cities in the country and in the Philippines.

PLAZA RIZAL

This monument-cum-park ideally located at downtown Naga was built in honor of the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. This is known locally as the center for public debates and discussions, family picnic gatherings and public recreation and relaxation spot.

PLAZA QUEZON

Named in honor of the great President of the Philippines Manuel L. Quezon, this plaza which is adjacent to the famous Plaza Rizal in downtown Naga, is where parades of all types are held and reviewed by prominent guests and officials of the city.   It is also a favorite site for concerts of popular bands and other performers in the country, including 6 Cycle Mind, Siakol, Parokya ni Edgar, Moonstar 88, Blackjack, and others.

PLAZA BARLIN

Located at Barlin and Arana Streets fronting the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, the plaza and the monument was constructed in honor of Msgr. Jorge Barlin, the first Filipino and Bicolano Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines.  Barlin, a native of Baao, Camarines Sur, is also one of the fifteen martyrs who bravely stand for and died for the sake of the Filipinos.

UNIVERSIDAD DE STA. ISABEL

Formerly called Colegio de Sta. Isabel, this Catholic Vincentian university is owned and run by the Daughters of Charity in Naga City, Philippines. It was established by the first five Daughters of Charity that arrived in the Philippines in January 1868 with Bishop of Caceres, Most Rev. Francisco Gainza, O.P., the founder of the Colegio through the royal order of Queen Isabella II of Spain. The school, which was the first normal school for women in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, was inaugurated on April 12, 1869. It achieved its university status in 2001.

ATENEO DE NAGA UNIVERSITY

Established in 1940, the university is the only Jesuit institution in Southern Luzon. During World War II, the school was converted into a prison camp by the Japanese Imperial Forces. In 1979, the College and the High School departments were the first in Camarines Sur to be accredited by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU). On February 20, 1999, the Commission on Higher Education conferred the Ateneo de Naga its university status.

RAUL S. ROCO LIBRARY

Named after the beloved Bicolano statesman, this learning facility is home to over 30,000 book titles alongside its being a hub with online access to other libraries in the country. It also houses the memorabilia of the late Senator Raul S. Roco and the Naga City Hall of Fame, where the various plaques and trophies representing international, national, and local awards received by the city government are displayed. It also houses education and culture-related government offices agencies like the Arts, Culture and Tourism Office, Publication Office, School Board, Naga City Governance Institute, i-Governance Office, and the Center for the Blind.

BICOL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTRUM

The only LGU-operated science and technology one-stop educational attraction in the Bicol Region. It is a popular landmark visited every month by thousands of students, children and their parents on educational field trips. Visitors come from different municipalities and provinces and schools and colleges in the Bicol Region and beyond. The facility features a computer gallery, a mini-science library and Sci-Art Cubbyhole for toddlers and preschoolers, complementing interactive exhibits that enhance learning and interest in sciences.

METRO NAGA SPORTS COMPLEX

This sports facility sprawling in the middle of vast greenery of Barangay Pacol, has Olympic-sized swimming pools, tennis courts, and a track oval shrouded by early morning mountain mist. It has hosted a number of local and national sports competitions including the yearly Palarong Pambansa.

NAGA CITY PEOPLE’S MALL

The largest public structure in Asia when it was constructed in the 1970’s, the Naga City People’s Mall (NCPM) houses thousands of stalls offering products ranging from fresh fish to souvenir items. It’s total floor area of 30,000 square meters, spread over three levels, is frequented by local shoppers. Local products and souvenir items are sold at competitive prices.

1. Basilica of Our Lady of Penafrancia

The Our Lady of Peñafrancia Basilica , commonly known as the Our Lady of Peñafrancia Church, is a Roman Catholic church in Camarines Sur established in 1750. The church is characterized by Baroque architecture and features stained glass windows and paintings. The image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the city’s patroness credited with performing numerous miracles according to believers, is housed within the structure.

The celebration of Our Lady of Peñafrancia’s feast day, which is held every September 17, is one of the most prestigious religious occasions in the nation.

2. San Francisco Church

The first church in the region erected by the Franciscan Friars was San Francisco Church , which was founded in 1578. On September 18, 1896, Spanish troops surrendered to Bikol rebel generals Elias Angeles and Felix Plazo at this location. The old church was destroyed by the heavy bombing of Naga during World War II, after which time it remained razed until a new church was built.

The new San Francisco Church was inaugurated on December 8, 1954. It is a Gothic-style church with Neo-Romanesque features.

3. Naga Metropolitan Cathedral

The Naga Metropolitan Cathedral , formerly known as Metropolitan Cathedral and Parish of Saint John the Evangelist) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Naga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines. The first church was established after the establishment of the diocese as the Diocese of Caceres in 1595. In 1808, the current cathedral was erected and dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy. It was completed and consecrated in 1843 during Spanish times.

The church presently has a cruciform layout and is Romanesque in style. It’s made of huge stone blocks with gabled galvanized iron sheets for roofs, with grey walls outside.

4. St. Anthony of Padua Church

The St. Anthony of Padua Parish Church in Camaligan, Camarines Sur, is a Roman Catholic church that was formerly known as Camaligan Church. It is one of the two parish churches of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Caceres, located in the town of Camaligan. The parish was established in 1795. In 1856, the first stone and wood structure burned down in Camaligan, which marked the beginning of its history as an organized community. The current building wasn’t finished until 1857, after the original structure had been destroyed.

The church, however, is still regarded as one of the oldest in Camarines Sur and is rich in religious and cultural history, as well as a frequent stopping place for Visita Iglesia.

5. Panicuason Hot Spring Resort and Adventure Park

At the base of a potentially active volcano, Mount Isarog, stands Panicuason Hot Spring Resort and Adventure Park , which is one of the most popular attractions in Camarines Sur. It is a well-maintained resort with trees and greenery hanging from its edges. The main features of the resort are its several natural hot springs and cold springs. The hot water source comes from Mount Isarog’s ongoing activity, while the chilly spring originates from Inarihan River.

Adventure activities like zipline, zip bike, Tarzan swing, wall climbing, and rappelling are also available for guests. Day visitors can stay in cottages while overnight guests may choose from rooms or cabanas.

6. Malabsay Falls

One of the most spectacular waterfalls in Camarines Sur is Malabsay Falls , a 40-foot drop amid lush vegetation. It is encircled by mossy cliffs and boulders with developing plants on them. Swimmers may enjoy a cold and deep catch plunge pool while thrill-seekers will surely not miss some approachable boulders for rock jumping into the natural pool.

The wooded area along the river is home to a variety of trees and provides sitting spots for tourists. A 10-minute walk from the entrance leads you to the falls.

7. Caramoan Island

The Caramoan Islands are the main destinations for island hopping in Camarines Sur. This group of islands, which are located in the province’s lower eastern section, has become known for its beautiful remote white sand beaches and coves. Other than swimming, snorkeling down different species of fish, exploring caverns and lagoons, hiking hilltops or climbing limestone rocks for spectacular views are some of the most fascinating things to do on the islands.

8. Mt. Isarog National Park

Mount Isarog , an active stratovolcano that has active fumaroles and hot springs, is one of the renowned tourist spots in Camarines Sur. It is a potentially active volcano that stands 1,976 meters above sea level.

The mountain and its surrounding area are part of a conservation zone that includes grasslands and tangled woods, which support several endemic species. In the early morning, the peak of the mountain offers a “sea of clouds,” as well as a picturesque view of Bicol Peninsula and Mount Mayon .

9. Naga Ecological Park

The Naga City Ecology Park is a large five-hectare park where you may do plenty of things with your family and friends. The park features different exotic plants, palms, an eco-walk maze, topiary garden, orchid and mini-forest. 10. Lake Buhi

Lake Buhi is a freshwater lake with an area of 18 square kilometers and an average depth of eight meters. The lake was formed in 1641, after an earthquake caused the side of Mount Asog to cave in.

The lake is home to several species of finned fish, including the “sinarapan”. On the lake, boating is by far the most popular sport. Guests are welcome to stroll about and take in the beauty of the park’s wooded areas, towering mountains, and abundant wildlife.

11. Sonrisa Farm

The lovely Sonrisa Farm is a lush slope of greeneries graced by magnificent sunrises to welcome everyone with a warm smile. It contains a wide range of local vegetables, indigenous plants, high-value crops, and livestock raised naturally – without pesticides or synthetic feeds – for sustainable farming and healthy living. It is a picturesque venue for countless weddings and events.

12. Porta Mariae

The Porta Mariae or Latin for “Marian gate” is an eleven-meter tall arch in Naga City which was built to commemorate 300 years of devotion to Our Lady of Penafrancia. The arch, 18 meters wide, 4 meters deep, and 11 meters high, is surmounted by a three-meter tall brass image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia and two angels on each side. The main portal’s two small gates each accommodate three persons, while the central portal accommodates at least eight persons.

13. Plaza Quince Martires

The Fifteen Martyrs of Bicol, or in Spanish, the Quince Martires del Bicolandia , were Filipino patriots in Bicol who were shot by a firing squad on January 4, 1897, for collaboration with the Katipunan during the Philippine Revolution against Spain. The plaza is located in the center of Naga City, in front of the San Francisco Church.

The people of Naga City and adjacent areas have been honoring these martyrs every fourth day of January for more than 70 years. A monument was erected in Naga City to commemorate the Quince Martires del Bicolandia during the term of Camarines Sur Gov. Julian Ocampo.

14. Plaza Jorge Barlin

Plaza Jorge Barlin is a small plaza with a statue honoring Jorge Barlin, the first Filipino to be a Roman Catholic bishop. 15. Oragon Monument & Plaza de Nueva Caceres

In 2010, the Oragon Monument and Plaza de Nueva Caceres were constructed to commemorate the 62nd founding anniversary of the City of Naga. The museum is housed in a two-story building that contains four galleries showcasing Jesse’s photographs, personal belongings (clothes and shoes he wore when he was alive), accolades, letters to Aika, educational displays, and interactive elements.

17. Museo del Seminario Conciliar de Nueva Caceres

The Museo del Seminario Conciliar de Nueva Caceres is housed in the Metropolitan Cathedral Compound’s central pavilion, which used to be the administrative offices. There are four exhibit areas on display. On September 9, 1988, the museum was designated a national historic monument from its humble origins as a home for a parish priest in the 18th century. It has grown into a center and source of religious education in the Bicol Region from its modest beginnings as a vocation house in the eighteenth century.

18. University of Nueva Caceres Museum

The University of Nueva Caceres Museum was a passion project of Don Jaime Hernandez, the institution’s founder. The museum is made up of a gallery and an archival library. It is divided into four parts: the Central Gallery, Filipiniana, Archival Library, and Founder’s Memorabilia. Archaeological, ethnographical, historical, and ecclesiastical collections relating to the Bicol Region are housed in this museum.

19. Haciendas De Naga Resort

The Camarines Sur Water Sports Complex is a great tourist destination in the province for water activity fans. It boasts of world-class facilities, particularly designed for wakeboarding, wakeskating, and waterskiing, as the first such facility in the Philippines. Naga is a coastal city in Metro Cebu , located south of Cebu City , population 155,750 in the 2015 census. Neighbouring municipalities are Minglanilla to the north and San Fernando to the south.

Naga is very much an industrial city with an enormous cement factory, some electric power plants and other industry.

The local tourist bureau has both a website and a Facebook page .

Get in [ edit ]

Naga is on the coastal highway going south from Cebu City , and often reached by bus from that city's south bus terminal. There are also jeepneys from Cebu or from other towns in the region, and KMK buses that run from SM City Cebu via Cebu South terminal.

The across-the-island highway to Toledo intersects the coastal highway at Naga, as well as further north at Talisay .

There is a ferry called My Boat Mejia from pier 3 at the port in Cebu City , with fare ₱60 and travel time a bit over half an hour.

Naga City Boardwalk: A Photogenic Gateway To A Memorable Outdoor Escape

Everyone was going nuts over the Naga City Boardwalk, when it was unveiled to the public. With its stunning sea views, laid-back ambiance and photogenic charm, this marine boardwalk is truly a crowd puller and an IG favorite. As a matter of fact, I’ve seen tons of photos of my hiking buddies in Naga City Boardwalk, decked out with formal clothes. And while it did spark my curiosity, I wasn’t in a rush to see the Naga City Boardwalk.

For the past couple of months, it seemed like all of Cebu’s top bloggers and social media influencers have been to Naga City Boardwalk. And of course, it became an instant sensation and a hit for people who are itching to add more color and life to their Instagram feeds. From drone shots to selfie snaps, I’ve seen heaps of images online highlighting the sheer size and grandeur of Naga City baywalk.

But, I wasn’t pressured to go there, and was actually willing to give it a pass. As I’ve preached before, I don’t see traveling, hiking or sightseeing as a race or competition. What’s more, I put more value on experiences than snaps and social media likes.  If a place can’t appease my cravings for knowledge or adventure, I don’t mind missing a chance to see it (ahem, 10, 000 Roses).

And besides, there are so many places in Cebu nowadays that are overhyped by bloggers and Facebook users, for the sake of getting a taste of the limelight. As I’ve seen from other posts, they are even calling this attraction the “Singapore of Cebu”, because it has the feel of the Lion City’s “One Marina Boulevard.

A week ago, I finally got an opportunity to see it and admire its beauty, when I organized a year-end hike in Naga City, Cebu.  Although it wasn’t the focal point of our adventure, it was nevertheless a great starter and ender to our year-end hike.

My Naga City Boardwalk experience

Like most of my day trips in Cebu, my adventure in Naga City started pretty early. Not only did I want to kick off things early, but I also yearned to catch the beautiful sunrise in Naga City Boardwalk. Since the marine boardwalk is facing the east, I thought the striking sunset would be a perfect appetizer to our day hike in the city’s highlands.

From Punta Princesa, Cebu, I caught up with the legendary Tatay Wanderer, Raul, and hopped on a jeepney bound for Naga City plaza. Upon our arrival, we didn’t waste any moment, and went straight to Naga City Boardwalk.

Truth be told, I wasn’t quite impressed, the first time I saw Naga’s newest attraction. With drunk men laying spiritless and trash scattered everywhere, I thought it was way below the lofty expectations of some people.

Actually, the scene kind of reminds of the Sinulog Festival aftermath, a couple of years ago. And, as it turned out, the whole city of Naga just celebrated its colorful and sprightly annual gala – the Dagitab Festival.

But, on the bright size, the city’s policemen and cleaning committee quickly got rid of some of the trash and boozed up merrymakers.

And when the 62-million-peso project became a little cleaner, I and Raul soaked up the sunrise views and took turns posing in front of the camera.

With its striking backdrop, Naga City Boardwalk gave us an irresistible urge to snap a ton of photographs.

Moments later, two familiar faces – Rollie and Beboi – arrived in the scene. Like me, they enjoyed the scenery and the sea breeze of Naga City as well.

And, there were a few people who were also taking in the views in Naga City Boardwalk. Furthermore, there were some people jogging, stretching and doing an assortment of body-weight exercises in this catchy spot in Naga City, Cebu.

From the looks of it, Naga City Boardwalk has the hallmarks of a family-friendly attraction in Naga, Cebu.

While waiting for the other hikers to arrive, we took the opportunity to roam around, and snap photos of Naga City Boardwalk.

Once again, Raul, with his trademark silhouette pose, was the primary model of my photo shoot.

As for me, I was in a state of euphoria, snapping photos and cherishing the atmosphere. Although it’s not as grand and large as Singapore’s boulevard, it was still was a fairly fantastic sight.

I’ve seen One Marina Boulevard, and honestly, our own version is nowhere as dazzling and awe-inspiring as Singapore’s boardwalk. But, who knows? With massive upgrades and a great deal of dedication from the hub’s officials, Naga City Boardwalk may give Singapore’s boardwalk a run for its money in the future. I know – I’m too optimistic, but a man can dream, right?

Minutes later, my favorite local hiker, ma’am Fe, arrived at Naga City Boardwalk, to join us for our hike. Unfortunately, though, she was a bit late for the spectacular sunrise. Nevertheless, she enjoyed the lovely views in this part of Cebu.

The sun was approaching its peak activity, when the girl trio – Dianne Faith, Hazzel Mae and Khyrylle – arrived in Naga City Boardwalk.

After taking a group of photo, we made our way to the nearest bus stop, to wait for Bing. Later on, she disembarked from the bus, and from there, we began our memorable day hike to the city’s highlands.

Despite the breathtaking views and majestic sea of clouds, Bing still felt there was something missing in her day trip in Naga. After all, she didn’t get to see the eye-catching sunrise in Naga City Boardwalk.

And so, except for ma’am Fe, we all went back to the marine boardwalk.

And, guess what? Bing treated us with some tasty balut.

Living to the motto “food is life”, Raul devoured a pair of balut.

As we were chilling, I bumped into an old friend, Dokie, who was having a teacher convention or something in the city. Obviously, we couldn’t let this one pass by without a picture.

With our muscles rested and wanderlust appeased, we slowly made our way to Jollibee to reward ourselves with a filling fast-food meal. Afterwards, we took a ride back to the city, and call it a day.

And, by the way, there are some details about Raul in our visit to Naga City Boardwalk that I didn’t mention. All I can say is the old dude was incredibly restless and anxious, as he was waiting for a gorgeous lady whom he adores.

How to get to Naga City Boardwalk:

There are a lot of different ways to get there from Cebu City. For those who are from Labangon, I suggest that you take a multi-cab ride (fare is PHP 18) from Punta Princesa to Naga Plaza. Likewise, you may go to Citilink, and take a jeepney to Naga City (fare is PHP 25).

Naga City Boardwalk may not be my cup of tea, but it did at least give me some sweet photographs and memories of our hike. Plus, it’s, hand down, the best place to warm up as well as cool down following a scenic hike in this city. In other words, I’m glad that I included it in our Naga City itinerary.

Naga opens new ‘world-class attractions’

In a ceremonial launching, the government on Thursday, October 7, 2021, opened three new attractions in Naga City – the Museo Naga, St. Francis of Assisi Community Stage, and Pasilong sa Naga. CEBU CITY, Philippines – Visitors and residents of Naga City now have more options to unwind and rest.

This after the city government, in a ceremonial launching last October 7, 2021, opened three new attractions, including a new-look for its old park.

The three attractions are the Museo Naga, St. Francis of Assisi Community Stage, and the Pasilong sa Naga, a creation by international designer Kenneth Cobonpue.

“’Pasilong’ means shelter and comfort in Cebuano. Interlocking circles of elevated walkways, water, and light form rings around a fountain. The performing stage is shaded by a leafy canopy of trees and framed by beautiful tropical foliage,” said Cobonpue in a post on Instagram .

“May all who visit ‘Pasilong sa Naga’ find calm and comfort in the meditative fall of water, and discover one’s self in the pathways that symbolize the cycle of our lives,” he added.

Aside from Cobonpue, those who attended the event on October 7 included Department of Tourism – Central Visayas director Shalimar Tamano, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, Board Members Glenn Soco, Raul Bacaltos, Yolanda Daan, and mayors Kristine Vanessa Chiong (Naga City), Gerald Anthony ‘Samsam’ Gullas (Talisay), Elanito Peña (Minglanilla), Lakambini Reluya (San Fernando), Mercedita Apura (Carcar City), Joannes Alegado (Consolacion), and former Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong.

In 2018, the city government of Naga announced that it would be upgrading the city park, where Pasilong sa Naga now stands, as part of its efforts to boost tourism and provide ‘green spaces’ for its constituents.

Construction of the P10.5- million Pasilong sa Naga commenced in 2018.

History of Naga

Naga was founded as pueblo in 1785. It became a city on September 2, 2007.

Economy, Business and Investment in Naga

Although agriculture still plays a big part of the local economy, Naga is fast becoming an urban center. In fact, it is now part of Metro Cebu where a lot of subdivisions, malls, and other commercial establishments have sprang up.

Naga is home to a large cement factory and two thermal electric power plant. Other large companies which call Naga their home are FSP Group, MRC Allied Industries, Kyocera Kinseki Philippines, Inc., Pryce Gases, Inc., and Rikio Southeast Asia.

In the mountains are found many vegetable gardens as well as poultry and piggery farms.

The City of Naga or Naga City of the Province of Cebu – not to be mistaken for Naga City, the second class independent component city of Camarines Sur – was recently in the news, and not for a good reason.

In September 20, 2018, after super typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut) hit the Philippines, a portion of the mountain collapsed and covered the houses in Barangays Tina-an and Naalad, Naga City. As of October 6, 2018, authorities ended their search and retrieval operations end, with a total death count of 78 dead, and 5 missing.

Dagitab Festival

This December 23, 2018 will be the 11th annual celebration of the Dagitab Festival that express these 6 aspects: light, progress, industry, tourism, economic development, and employment to the people.

Naga’s city officials give their best to make it one of the grandest cultural festivals in Cebu. Each year, every barangay has dance contingents vying for top prize, clad in colourful costumes and dancing to beats that make everyone dizzyingly happy.

Naga Boardwalk

The Naga Boardwalk is a P62 Million project. It is open to the public at no charge, from 5am-2am every day. You can relax your mind and feel the cool breeze from the sea! You can dine in one of the restaurants near the site if you’re feeling peckish.

Baywalk, boardwalk. What’s the difference? They’re different places but the tranquillity they bring are roughly the same. Naga Marine Baywalk also allows you to relax and come night time, you’ll be amazed at the lights and cool sea breeze. Perfect for a date if you’re on a tight budget. You can go fishing too! Just bring your own fishing materials or make memorable moments with your family here and take lots pictures!

Cebu has numerous peaks with breathtaking views. Mount Naupa is one of them. It is absolutely free, but you have to remember to take care of Mother Nature as you explore the mountain. Leave no trace and take nothing with you.

Naga City: The Happy Place and the Heart of Bicol

The City of Naga is an independent component city in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. The city was established in 1575 on order of Spanish Governor-General Francisco de Sande.  The city, then named Ciudad de Nueva Caceres (New Caceres City), earned its status as the third Spanish royal city in the Philippine islands, after Cebu and Manila.

Naga is nicknamed as the "Heart of Bicol" for its geographical location near the center of the Bicol Peninsula. It is the second largest city in the Bicol Region (Region V) in terms of population and the religious, financial, educational, trade, and commercial center of the Bicol Region. Residents of the city are called Nagueños.

Naga City is at the core of Metro Naga, an official designation given the city and 14 municipalities in the area administered by the Metro Naga Development Council. MNDC covers the entire 2nd district of the province of Camarines Sur , and part of its 1st, 3rd and 4th districts.

Naga City is the Bicol Region's top tourist destinations not only because of Peñafrancia Festival, it is also a convenient disembarkation point and base for other tourist destinations in the southern Bicol Region like the Caramoan, Camarines Sur, the upscale resort of Misibis, butanding (whale shark) watching during their migration in Donsol, the white sand beaches of Sorsogon and surfing beaches of Catanduanes provinces.

Physical Features

The city of Naga is located within the province of Camarines Sur in the southeastern tip of Luzon at the near the center of the Bicol Region, surrounded on all sides by rich agricultural, forest and fishing areas. It covers a land area of 8,448 hectares (20,880 acres) and is located around the serpentine and historic Naga River, at the confluence of the Naga and Bikol Rivers. Thus, it has always been an ideal place for trade and as a center for schools, church and government offices. Included in its territory is Mount Isarog , a declared protected area in Region V known as Mount Isarog Natural Park.

Naga City is located 377 kilometers (234 mi) Southeast of Manila, the nation's capital, and about 380 kilometers (240 mi) northeast of Cebu City, the second largest city in the country.

Churches and monasteries

• The Naga Metropolitan Cathedral is the oldest cathedral established in the whole southern Luzon. It was built in 1573, and was inaugurated in 1575. It is also the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Caceres
• Our Lady of Penafrancia Shrine is the original home of Our Lady of Peñafrancia for two centuries. It was established in 1750.
• Peñafrancia Basilica Minore , established in 1985, it is the new home of Our Lady of Peñafrancia where the Traslacion starts when her image is led into procession around the city streets then brought to the cathedral.
• San Francisco Church , established in 1578, it is the first church in the region built by the Franciscan Friars. The surrender of the Spanish forces to the Bikol revolutionaries Elias Angeles and Felix Plazo took place here on September 18, 1896. The church was reduced to rubble by the heavy bombing of Naga in World War II, and the church remained in ruins until the present new edifice was constructed.

Historical Landmarks

Nine sites and landmarks in the city with historical value.

• Calle Via Gainza , now Peñafrancia Avenue, was first known as Via Gainza in honor of Bishop Francisco Gainza, O.P. (1863–1879), the 25th and considered as the greatest Spanish bishop of the See of Caceres.
• Calle Real , now Elias Angeles Street, was one of the earliest streets in Spanish Nueva Caceres laid out at the close of the 16th century. The street figured as a historic backdrop to the events of September 1898, which established the Filipino revolutionary government headed by Elias Angeles.
• Calle de Legaspi at the western portion of Panganiban Drive, was established in 1839 after the Naga River was straightened as a shortcut from Calle Real to the new western bank of the river.
• Casa Real site on General Luna Street. The Casa Real, the government building of Nueva Caceres, was established at this location in 1588
• Casa Tribunal site on Elias Angeles Street was the original site of the Casa Tribunal or “common house” which provided free rooms to travelers until 1839.
• Casino Español site at the corner Elias Angeles and Arana Street, was the location of Casino Español, a spacious building of piedra china and wood that served as the social and recreational center of the male Spanish population of Nueva Caceres and neighboring towns.
• House of Tomas Prieto site at the corner Panganiban Drive and Peñafrancia Avenue was the site of the Bicolano martyr, Tomas Prieto, who was executed on January 4, 1897 at the Bagumbayan Field in Manila together with ten others, collectively known as the "Bicol Martyrs."
• The Naga City Police Station on Barlin Street was the site of the Cuartel General of the Guardia Civil in Camarines that was constructed in 1870, but was razed by fire caused by faulty electrical wiring.
• Puente de Naga, now Lt. Delfin Rosales Bridge, the massively designed concrete bridge was constructed in 1847 and was known as Puente de Naga, and until the 1920s when the bridge was renamed in honor of Bicolano Jose Maria Panganiban. It was renamed again in 1989, to honor Lt. Delfin C. Rosales in World War II, during the battle for Naga in April 1945.
• PLAZA QUINCE MARTIRES It is the site where a monument that honors the 15 Martyrs of Bicol was built. It was on January 4, 1897 or barely 5 days after the National Hero –Dr. Jose P. Rizal – was executed when the 11 prisoners from Bicol were also executed on the same field in Bagumabayan (now Luneta). The four others had either died in prison due to severe torture or while in exile in the island of Fernando Poo, off the coast of Africa. The monument, which was located in the city’s Central Business District 1, was built on November 29, 1926.
• PLAZA RIZAL This monument-cum-park ideally located at downtown Naga was built in honor of the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. This is known locally as the center for public debates and discussions, family picnic gatherings and public recreation and relaxation spot.
• The Holy Rosary Minor Seminary Museum showcases Bicol's ancient relics and artifacts like burial jars, ancient china wares, rare stones and ritual objects. The museum also features local church history where old Church vestiges and sacred objects are displayed.
• The Penafrañcia Museum contains sacred vestiges related to Marian devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
• The University of Nueva Caceres Museum is one of the oldest museums outside Manila and recognized by the International Association of Museums. It houses historical artifacts of ancient Bikol, its people and culture.
• Bicol Science and Technology Centrum is a science museum established in 1993 in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology to cater to the science and technology education for young, professionals, teachers and enthusiasts alike. It features an exhibit of interactive gadgets, a skywatch gallery, a sci-cubby hole for the kids, an audio-visual room and a cybercafe for internet users.

The nightlife in Naga City is considered to be the most vibrant in Bicol. It is concentrated along Magsaysay Avenue where restaurants, bars and music lounges re lined up catering to tourist and locals alike.

• The Peñafrancia Festival

The city celebrates the Feast of Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia, Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the Patroness of the Bicol Region starts the second Friday of September each year. The start of the 10-day feast, one of the largest Marian devotions in the country, is signalled by a procession (called Traslacion) which transfers the centuries-old image of the Blessed Virgin Mary from its shrine at the Peñafrancia Basilica Minore to the 400-year old Naga Metropolitan Cathedral. Coinciding with nine days of novena prayer at the cathedral, the city celebrates with parades, pageants, street parties, singing contests, exhibits, concerts, and other activities. Finally, on the third Saturday of September, the image is returned shoulder-borne by so-called voyadores to the Basilica Minore de Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia via the historic Naga River.

Getting There

Naga City is easily accessible by air and land. The city is served by the Naga (WNP) Airport which is located in the barangay of San Jose in the nearby town of Pili. Flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Naga takes approximately 35–40 minutes with services provided by Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines three and two times a day, respectively. By land, Naga is a 7- to 8-hour ride from Manila via Quirino & Andaya Highways or 10 hours via the Maharlika Highway. It is approximately 22 hours from Cebu City with ferry transfers in Sorsogon, the southernmost province of the Bicol peninsula. Buses ply to Sorsogon and Tacloban. Daily rail services to and from Manila used to be provided by Philippine National Railways.

Getting Around

Within the city, the dominant mode of transportation is the tricycles and jeepney, the latter a 16- to 22-seater stretched version of the American jeep.  The jeepney, dubbed as “The King of the Road of the Philippines”, is abundant all over the city. It is available for long distance travel and around the city on their designated routes.

Other means of transportations can also be found at very affordable prices. The ‘padyak’ or ‘pedicab’ is a bicycle with a sidecar. It is good for short-distance travels when you are not in a hurry.  It is light and moves around the quaint village streets of the city. Naga still has a number of horse-drawn carriages called ‘calesa’ along Abella Street.

The ‘tricyle’ is a motorcycle with a sidecar for short and long distance travel. They are color-coded according to their routes but, can go around other places outside their regular fare for special trips.

Taxis are available. They are generally stationed in key commercial and tourist hot spots.  They are all airconditioned with friendly drivers.  T hey can be contacted through their agents or the driver’s personal mobile numbers.
