Midwest Madness 2023: Return of the Madness

Midwest Startups

Midwest Startups

We’re ready for another year of Midwest Madness! Which city will take the 2023 Championship title? We’ve compiled a few team predictions for this year’s tournament.

It’s March Madness season which means… it’s back! The time has come for the third annual Midwest Madness tournament brought to you by the team at Midwest Startups and M25 . Every year we pit the cities from our annual Midwest City Rankings against each other in a fun, competitive bracket-style tournament for Midwest Startups glory. While we’re the Midwest’s biggest fan, there can only be one Midwest Madness Champion!

2022 Tournament Recap

Our 2022 Midwest Madness winner was #8 Columbia, MO . The dark-horse of the tournament knocked off its competition to take the win against #1 Wichita, KS in the championship round. To celebrate, the Midwest Startups team traveled to CoMo and hosted a Midwest Madness party. Special shoutout to our 2022 Community Champ, Brett Calhoun, Managing Director and Partner at Scale plus the entire team at EquipmentShare !

2021 Tournament Recap

In 2021, while there was no party to celebrate, #5 Bloomington, IN was the first-ever Midwest Madness Champion. In the final round against Cincinnati, Bloomington took the win with the help of the 2021 Community Champion, Pat East, Executive Director at Dimension Mill and Principal at Flywheel Fund .

Will we see a repeat champion in 2023 or will a new city be crowned with Midwest Startups glory? Only time will tell. In the meantime, our team has compiled some predictions for what we expect to see in this year’s tournament.

🔥 Hot Takes

Victor: After back-to-back years of Wichita coming on strong, I think most people will expect another title run from them. I’ll take the devil’s advocate there — I think they are tired, fed-up and can’t recover after going all-out two years in a row. As much as I’d love to finally throw a Midwest Madness championship party there, I think they’ve done the equivalent of ‘graduating their starters’ and are going to need some rebuilding years to get some momentum back.

The 1M+ metro I think could go deep is Indianapolis. They lost to rival Columbus in the Sweet Sixteen last year, but I think they have a lot going for them — they jumped up to #3 overall in the Midwest Startup city rankings and they have a ton of community pride and organizations like Techpoint and Elevate really pushing hard.

I don’t think Champaign has a shot at going to the Final Four again — I think last year they faced relatively unenthusiastic competition before being blown out by Wichita. I could be in for a surprise, but I don’t see them making it past the round of 32.

Lastly — my dark horse is Des Moines. They have a really vibrant tech community but got upset in the first round by an upstart Youngstown. I don’t see that happening again — they could be a real contender this year with the right combination of size (not too big, not too small) and a thriving, vocal tech ecosystem.

Abhinaya: Louisville and Lexington consistently did better than larger and similar ecosystems to reach the final eight in 2022, when they didn’t even make it to the second round in 2021. This was a huge improvement. One of them might make it to the championship round and take home the trophy the year!

The ecosystem grew quite a bit over the past year — have you been to their Party Horses NFT launch party, where they gave out custom Makers Mark bottles? All the other cities do not know what they are getting into this year. KY is ready to take down everyone.

Katie: You know I love an underdog story! This year I’m predicting a run to the semi-finals by an 11-seed or lower. Will it be a college town? A former hotspot of industry? Terre Haute, IN? We’ll see, but I’m rooting for all of ‘em!

I’d love to see 2023 be the year Wichita finally declares victory. They’ve fallen to the eventual champions deep into the tournament both years, and I’m convinced they’ve got the comms infrastructure in place within their ecosystem to deliver another consistent showing.

Ohio? More like “Oh, hi. No.” I’m going against most of this team’s enthusiasm for Cincinnati and Columbus and taking it a step farther by saying no Ohio cities will be in the final 8. Prove me wrong. While Ohio was the only state with three cities in the top 15 in Midwest Startups’ annual Midwest Cities Rankings last year, we haven’t seen as much interaction on our social channels from community champions in the Buckeye State, and I’m willing to bet a pint from Rhinegeist on this claim.

Leandro: While Blue Blood Wichita and last year’s tourney-winning Cinderella CoMo [Columbia, MO] are early favorites to make it back to the Final matchup, they could be joined in the Final Four by a, hopefully, re-tooled Cincy [Cincinnati, OH] and fired-up Minneapolis, MN.

After a relatively mid performance in 2022 falling at the Sweet 16 following a run to the Championship round in 2021, I’m looking to Cincy to bounce back. Granted, they’ll need local community champions to step up into starter positions from their rising startup community, Cintrifuse, CincyTech, and UC students fresh off their February hackathon.

Minneapolis, the #2 city on the 2022 Midwest Startup Cities Rankings that was eliminated in last year’s Round of 32, could finally start to live up to it’s potential. That’s IF Groove, Twin Cities Startup Week, Techstars Minneapolis programs, and the local startup community can get out the Twitter poll votes like they’ve recently been rallying their IRL ecosystem.

Ruth: After a strong show-out by #8 Columbia last year, they’ve made it clear that they’re a force to be reckoned with. While #1 Wichita held the lead early in the Championship round, they were ultimately taken down by the #8 seed in the end. I believe this year may just be THE year for Wichita. After making it into the Final Four in 2021 and the Championship game in 2022, they keep moving up in the ranks and pose as a strong contender for the championship this year.

#1 Cincinnati didn’t make it through the Sweet Sixteen last year, but after a close score in the 2021 Championship game against Bloomington, they sit in a strong position for this year’s tournament. If they are able to find a community champ to rally the city together, they may just be champion material.

Sam: I think we’re going to see an Indiana rebound this year. After Bloomington took home the first Midwest Madness crown in ‘21, the state had a rough ‘22 showing with no IN cities making it to the Elite 8 (where SIX different states were represented). Look for the Hoosier state to come back with a vengeance this year.

Youngstown, OH is going to BRING IT this year. Last year they took down Des Moines, Madison, and Chicago before losing to eventual champ CoMo in the Elite 8 with strong vote turnout and a relatively narrow margin. I think they push their way into at least the Final Four this year.

Watch for a repeat of statewide rallies this year. Although we’re ultimately only crowning one city champion, we saw some awesome statewide support for cities that made a deep run last year. Votes from within the city limits will get you through early rounds, but if you want to win the crown in an increasingly competitive tournament, you have to have a game plan for getting the vote out at a larger scale.

🗳️ Final Team Predictions

Victor: Des Moines or Indianapolis Mike: Des Moines or Wichita Abhinaya: Louisville or Lexington Katie: Wichita or Ann Arbor Leandro: Cincinnati or Minneapolis Ruth: Wichita or Cincinnati Sam: Champaign

2024 NCAA Tournament bracket Midwest Regional: March Madness predictions, upsets, players to watch

Purdue's path to redemption runs through a midwest regional filled with potential bracket busters.

mm-regional-preview-v2-midwest-1.png

Purdue's path to redemption through the Midwest Regional of the 2024 NCAA Tournament bracket is paved with All-American opposition and a handful of potential bracket busters. Storylines abound throughout the regional, which will crown a champion in Detroit on March 31.

Two years after becoming the first No. 15 seed to ever reach the Elite Eight, Saint Peter's is back in the bracket as a No. 15 seed again with a different coach in Bashir Mason and a drastically remade roster. But the Peacocks' reputation should nonetheless catch the attention of No. 2 seed Tennessee , which is known for struggling in March.

If the Volunteers advance, a storyline could be coach Rick Barnes facing No. 7 seed Texas , his former school. The Longhorns are one of three Big 12 teams in the region, along with No. 9 seed TCU and No. 4 seed Kansas . The Jayhawks face an interesting test against up-tempo No. 13 seed Samford after navigating late-season injuries to star players Kevin McCullar Jr . and Hunter Dickinson .

It's not March without brackets.  Get your bracket pools ready now  and join our men's and women's challenges for the chance to win big-time prizes!

The winner of that game will get either No. 5 seed Gonzaga or No. 12 seed McNeese . The Zags have made eight straight Sweet 16 appearances but will have to get past a 30-win Cowboys team coached by former LSU coach Will Wade in the first round. After a year away from coaching, Wade is back and leading a potential Cinderella team.

If anyone is wearing the slippers entering the dance, it's No. 11 seed Oregon , which cruised through the Pac-12 Tournament to emerge as a "bid thief" in the field of 68. The Ducks are led by guard Jermaine Couisnard , who spent the first four years of his career playing at South Carolina , which is the team Oregon faces in the first round. The No. 6 seed Gamecocks are a sleeper team to watch under second-year coach Lamont Paris. So is No. 3 seed Creighton . The Bluejays were one controversial call away from reaching the 2023 Final Four and are the only team to beat No. 1 overall seed UConn in this calendar year.

Best first-round game

(4) Kansas vs. (13) Samford:  Samford gets 44.8% of its minutes from its bench, which ranks third in the country at KenPom. Kansas gets just 23.7% of its minutes from the bench, which ranks No. 318. With KU stars McCullar and Dickinson working their way back from injury, keeping up with the high-flying Bulldogs may be a problem. Throw in the altitude of Salt Lake City, Utah, to the equation, and this one could get weird.

Top potential matchup

(1) Purdue vs. (4)   Kansas:  If both teams win their first two games, the Boilermakers and Jayhawks will square off in the Sweet 16. The two last met in the 2017 Sweet 16 when the seedings were reversed and the Jayhawks crushed Purdue by 32. Both programs have lived near the top of college basketball in the years since, and a high-stakes showdown between coaches Matt Painter and Bill Self would have legendary potential. Though the schools haven't played in recent years, Purdue center Zach Edey and Dickinson are plenty familiar with each other from Dickinson's three seasons in the Big Ten at Michigan .

Cinderella team that will surprise

(12) McNeese : The Cowboys beat VCU , UAB and Michigan on the road by double digits before running through the Southland Conference without much resistance. McNeese is coached by Wade, who is on a redemption tour after his tenure with LSU ended in 2022 amid an NCAA investigation. This team is ruthlessly efficient offensively and forces significantly more turnovers than it commits. With a handful of former power-conference players in the rotation — led by ex-TCU guard Shahada Wells — McNeese won't be awestruck by Gonzaga.

Team that will make a far-too-early exit

(2) Tennessee : There are both recent and historic forces working against the Volunteers, who are sharing this regional with three of the seven teams to beat them this season. They played their worst game of the season in a one-and-done showing at the SEC Tournament on the heels of a Senior Day loss to Kentucky . The program has only been to one Elite Eight, and coach Rick Barnes is known for struggling in March. If there's one bit of hope, it's this: when Barnes reached the only Final Four of his storied career in 2003 with Texas, it came after a double-digit loss in the conference tournament opener. The Vols will have to hope history repeats itself 21 years later for Barnes.

Six players to watch

  • Zach Edey, Purdue : Edey is in line to repeat as National Player of the Year after leading Purdue to another outright Big Ten title. He is averaging 24.4 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game entering the NCAA Tournament. At 7-foot-4, he is virtually impossible for opponents to defend.
  • Dalton Knecht , Tennessee:  Knecht emerged as Edey's top challenger for National Player of the Year while averaging 21.1 points on 39.7% 3-point shooting in his only season with Tennessee. The former Northern Colorado star can score in multiple ways and has been the impetus behind the Volunteers' improved offense.
  • Baylor Scheierman , Creighton : Scheierman reached double figures in all but one game this season and hit five or more 3-pointers on three occasions. The 6-foot-6 wing is a one-man offensive factory and posted his program's first triple-double since 1985 this season.
  • Max Abmas , Texas : Abmas put Oral Roberts on his back in 2021 and took it to a Sweet 16. Now playing his fifth and final season of college basketball, he remains a highly combustible undersized scoring guard. Abmas has hit four or more 3-pointers 10 times this season.
  • Kevin McCullar Jr., Kansas:  When he's 100% healthy, McCullar is one of the best players in college basketball and an NBA Draft prospect. He's an elite defender and diverse scoring option with five years of elite-level experience. But he's also dealt with a bone bruise that has forced him in and out of the lineup over the last several weeks.
  • Shahada Wells, McNeese:  Wells is a small but mighty difference-maker for McNeese, leading the Cowboys in points (17.8), assists (4.8) and steals (3.0) per game. The TCU transfer is the type of gritty underdog player made to have a moment in March.

Midwest Regional winner

(1) Purdue : Purdue has many of the same faces in key places as last season, but this isn't the same team. When the Boilermakers made just 5 of 26 attempts from 3-point range in a stunning loss to No. 16 seed FDU last year, it was emblematic of their season-long struggles from beyond the arc. Purdue shot just 32.2% from 3-point range last season, which ranked No. 291 nationally. This year, they are shooting 40.8% from 3-point range, which is second nationally. Point guard Braden Smith has taken massive strides as a sophomore, and Southern Illinois transfer Lance Jones has added punch. Edey is the same dominant force, and he now has the supporting cast he needs to carry Purdue to its first Final Four since 1980.

WATCH: 'One Shining Moment' after UConn wins 2024 NCAA Tournament title to complete March Madness

The 'one shining moment' montage includes the best highlights from a wild and memorable 2024 ncaa tournament.

Purdue v Connecticut

The UConn Huskies have completed one of the most impressive runs in NCAA Tournament history, defeating Purdue 75-60 on Monday night to win a second straight national championship. They join an elite list of back-to-back champs that, spanning the last 50 years, includes just Duke (1991-92) and Florida (2006-07). In defeating the Boilermakers, UConn has claimed the program's sixth national championship -- all coming in the last 25 years.

But the history made on Monday night by UConn is not limited to its status as repeat champions. The Huskies posted the best point differential (+140) in NCAA Tournament history and extended their record of double-digit tournament wins to 12 dating back to last year (the previous record was six). UConn is also the first No. 1 overall seed to win it all in 11 years ( Louisville , 2013) and improves the program to 6-0 in national championship games, which is the best in tournament history.

And just like the five title-winning UConn teams before them, the 2024 Huskies got to savor their special moment by taking in the iconic montage set to the music of "One Shining Moment." Though the always-memorable tournament recap features highlights from throughout all of March Madness , it of course crescendos in the Final Four with some of the pivotal moments from UConn's historic title run with double-digit wins against both Alabama and Purdue .

The 2024 edition of "One Shining Moment" includes notable highlights from:

  • Jack Gohlke's 3-point barrage in Oakland's first-round upset of Kentucky .
  • Colorado's clutch plays to win a 102-100 track meet against Florida in the first round after the Buffs advanced out of the First Four in Dayton , Ohio .
  • Clemson's upset of Arizona in the Sweet 16, one of two upsets in a wide-open West Regional that Alabama would go on to win.
  • NC State stars DJ Burns and DJ Horne leading the Wolfpack's Cinderella run to the Final Four.
  • Zach Edey's dominance during Purdue's path to winning the Midwest Regional, including the shots of Edey cutting down the nets without the ladder.
  • And, of course, plenty of highlights from UConn's historic run with a spotlight on Donovan Clingan early, followed by the competitive fire of Cam Spencer during the title game win against Purdue.
