Join Army Outdoor Recreation for a wide variety of great adventure trips and activities offered as a part of the Warrior Adventure Quest (WAQ) program! Soldiers are invited to take part in this interactive program to build camaraderie with other soldiers as they share the challenges (and even entertainment) of the activities offered.

Warrior Adventure Quest (WAQ) program is endorsed by the Department of the Army under executive orders for all units pre and post deployment. Activities are designed to re-create the adrenaline rush of combat in a safe, supervised, controlled environment. WAQ builds cohesion, maintains combat readiness and helps Soldiers reach a 'new stage of normal' by diminishing boredom and high-risk behavior. Soldiers will be able to draw similarities between the activity and their combat experiences.

Throughout the year, units who wish to participate in WAQ will have the opportunity to take part in various activities offered through Army Outdoor Recreation. For specific dates and details, contact Army Outdoor Recreation.

So keep your eyes open for these activities during the year!

For full details, qualifications, and eligibility, check out the Warrior Adventure Quest detail page .

Make sure you understand the risks first!

In today’s rapid, quick-paced society, it’s only natural that ultra fads and titillating trends affect the members of the Armed Forces. From skydiving to rodeo riding, adrenaline junkies are flocking in record numbers to outdoor sites to engage in extreme activities that get the blood rushing. Although these activities are a great way to stay in shape and relieve stress, Commanders and Supervisors must determine if their troops are qualified to participate in these activities without injuries. The checklists and background material in the High-Risk Activity Safety Guide will be the first step in determining if the member has the experience necessary for a mishap-free outing:

Benefits Of Outdoor Activities

Going out into nature and engaging in physical activities can get your heart rate up and boost your mood and provide much-needed mental rest. Walking, hiking, swimming, biking, and kayaking, to name a few, offer excellent opportunities to immerse yourself in the beauty of your surroundings and clear your mind. Taking time away from screens – even for a few minutes – can be incredibly refreshing. Physically, these activities help promote better circulation by pumping blood throughout your body more efficiently, building endurance and flexibility, helping with weight loss goals, strengthening your core muscles and bones, and boosting energy levels. With such a long list of benefits to explore through outdoor activity, there's no reason not to incorporate a small amount of these activities into our daily routines.

Sports and recreation are great ways to enjoy being social. There are multiple advantages when it comes to people participating together in these activities. Playing sports helps build physical skills, resilience, and teamwork among the players, which can be valuable characteristics later in life. Additionally, playing sports encourages discipline by setting goals that require practice and dedication to succeed. Socially, sports allow people of all ages to form friendships with teammates, opponents, and friends. Finally, recreational activities offer participants a chance to socialize outside their comfort zone with individuals who share similar interests. In short, many remarkable opportunities come with playing sports or engaging in activities that help one physically or emotionally, and socially.

Discover Adventure Categories

Here are four life-enhancing adventure categories worth exploring and then going out and trying some out. You'll be amazed at how good you'll feel doing something that inspires you and makes you feel alive with excitement. Each category will offer unique activities ranging from mild to wild and free to pricey. There is something for everyone to try and do in this adventure portal. Our goal is to inspire you to get off the couch, leave your comfort zone behind, and get outdoors and go on an adventure.

AdobeStock_208715920.jpg

Outdoor Recreation, Adventure Sports, Adventure Tours, and Unique Travel Experiences offer incredibly varied experiences for the willing participant. Although they are distinct categories, some activities could fit into one or more of them. Try out each activity to create an adventure tailored to your preference and style. Outdoor recreation allows you to explore nature and get in touch with your surroundings. Adventure Sports offer thrills, excitement, and a sense of accomplishment. Adventure Tours blend exploration with guided educational activities. Finally, Unique Travel Experiences will give you lasting memories with their exotic locales, friendly people, and exciting cultural sights that you won't soon forget!

Outdoor Recreation

Outdoor recreation is simply a form of leisure or sport in the great outdoors. It includes activities as diverse as camping, fishing, backpacking, hunting, mountain biking, skiing, sailing, and more. If you prefer being outdoors to staying indoors, chances are there's an outdoor recreation activity for you. For example, if you're looking for challenges and thrills, canoeing or skiing down a steep slope might be your cup of tea. If you're more laid back and enjoy the calming effects of nature, taking a hike in the woods or playing a round of golf could be perfect for you. There is something special about connecting with nature while doing an activity that can bring us joy and invigoration - no wonder why outdoor recreation has been so popular over time!

Adventure Sports

Adventure sports involve a bit of danger and the potential for adrenaline-rushing thrills. These can range from white water rafting in the rapids to rappelling your local canyon. There's no shortage of adventure sports available if you're seeking excitement. Bungee jumping, deep sea diving, skydiving, snowboarding, kayaking, and rock climbing are just some exhilarating possibilities. Adventure sports allow you to explore nature on a whole new level - both physically and mentally - and for those brave enough to participate, it promises an unforgettable experience.

Whitewater Rafting 1.jpg

Adventure Tours

Adventure tours are a great way to explore new places quickly and efficiently, especially if your mode of transportation has legs or an engine. These types of tours offer plenty of exciting experiences. Examples include:

Dirt biking in Patagonia.

Motorcycling across the beautiful red rocks of Sedona.

Off-road jeeping in Moab.

Touring the Alaskan tundra on ATVs.

Riding mules to the bottom of the Grand Canyon

Riding an airboat through alligator-infested waters

An adventure tour gives you a unique perspective of your destination that traditional methods can't provide. So why not rev up your vacation and make unforgettable memories on an adrenaline-filled adventure tour?

Unique Travel Experiences

Unique travel experiences are some of the most memorable and can create unforgettable memories. Whether you're looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience or something to check off your bucket list, there are many incredible options! How about spending the night in an ice hotel? Or camping out in a yurt beneath the stars? You could even stay in a tree house high above the forest floor, go on a safari to spot different wildlife or take a couple of days to experience cliff tenting. It's amazing what unique experiences await you when you're open to trying new things!

The Top US States for an Outdoor Getaway

It's hard to narrow down which states have the best outdoor recreation in the United States—but we did it anyway.

It's important to note that every state in the U.S. has outdoor recreation available, from teeny-tiny Rhode Island to sprawling Montana and Arizona. And with approximately 6,600 state parks in the U.S. and national parks spread from northern Maine to southern California, no one in the U.S. has to travel too far to find somewhere to commune with nature.

However, the states below all have something in common: a fantastic variety of outdoor landscapes that create varied recreational opportunities. In the states below, you can hike one day, go whitewater rafting the next, and go fishing at a luxurious backcountry lodge the next. And because the states below have booming industries to support outdoor recreation, it's easy to find guides, lodges, outfitters, rental shops, and all the other services travelers will need for a hassle-free outdoor trip.

Though it's all about outdoor getaways in the states below, you don't have to be an adrenaline junkie to have a good time. From family-friendly zipline tours to dude ranches to cycle-and-wine routes, the states below have plenty to do (and plenty of outdoorsy places to stay) regardless of how extreme you want to be.

Sure, Utah has amazing ski resorts in the mountains near Salt Lake City , but step away from downtown and you'll find sprawling desert landscapes containing some of the country's most otherworldly rock formations. Utah's "big five" national parks are worth several days of exploring, from the river canyon trails of Zion to the narrow, higher elevation hikes in Arches National Park .

And don't stop with the national parks. Perhaps you'd like to take a stand-up paddleboard class in a natural underground hot spring, or take a guided llama trek through the mountains, complete with gourmet fireside meals? Utah has outdoor adventure for any activity and any activity level, from experts-only downhill mountain bike lines in Moab to flat slot canyons first-time hikers can explore in less than an hour.

The best time to visit Utah varies drastically on where you're planning to go, so it's best to check recommendations for the local town or region you're interested in visiting.

What's your outdoor activity of choice? Skiing? Surfing? Rock climbing? Mountain biking? Scuba diving? BASE jumping? Well, it doesn't matter one bit, because California has it all. And it should—with 840 miles of coastline, an entire mountain range, and both the continental US's highest and lowest points (Mount Whitney and Death Valley National Park, respectively), it has every type of terrain imaginable for outdoor adventure. It also has the most national parks of any state (nine) and some of the only ancient redwood forests in the United States. If you can't find something to enjoy outdoors in California, that's on you—especially since amazing outdoor destinations like Muir Woods and Idyllwild are very close to some of the state's biggest cities.

California has nine national parks, but Alaska is a close second with eight. And if you look at total acreage, Alaska is far and away the winner, with more than 32 million acres protected in the national park system. From touring glacial fjords to hiking mountain summits, Alaska's national parks are varied, wild, and vast.

But it's not just national parks that beckon outdoor enthusiasts to Alaska. Travelers can stay at remote eco-camps to watch grizzly bears in the wild, go dogsledding in Nome, mountain bike through old Gold Rush towns, and see the northern lights from the comfort of a heated geodesic dome.

Alaska's dramatic landscapes only add to the outdoor adventure. Because travel by car around the massive state can be difficult, travelers hoping to move between parks will likely need to use a combination of seaplanes, trains, and ferries. Note that the most popular time to visit Alaska is late summer (July and August) and many non-snow-related activity operators close between October and May.

It's not just country music and honky-tonk bars. Tennessee is one of the best slightly under-the-radar states for outdoor adventure, thanks in part to the Great Smoky Mountains. Nature-lovers can chase waterfalls, take multi-day whitewater rafting tours to hidden beachside campsites, or hike sections of the Appalachian Trail. Fly-fishing, too, is popular in Tennessee, thanks in part to the state's three major river systems (the Mississippi, Cumberland, and Tennessee).

Tennessee is probably one of the most family-friendly outdoor states in the country, thanks in part to a variety of kid-friendly outdoor—but not extreme—activities. Families can go ziplining and ride a mountain coaster in Gatlinburg or ride a glass-roofed train through the Hiwassee River gorge. Both glamping and treehouse resorts are big in Tennessee, offering a chance to stay in nature without giving up the amenities of a more pampered experience. Especially unique sleeping options in the state include a Conestoga wagon and a treehouse resort near Great Smoky Mountains National Park .

If you love adventuring but hate big crowds and expensive price tags, Vermont may be the summer destination for you. Of course, it's amazing in winter, too, but the crowds get a little larger since the state is home to some of the biggest and best ski resorts east of the Rocky Mountains.

In the summer, Vermont feels like a non-stop wilderness where you have the woods to yourself. You can hike the 273-mile Long Trail, go paddling on Lake Champlain, or hit the downhill bike park at Killington Mountain Resort. You can road bike between the state's breweries (of which there are more than 50) or hit one of the hundreds of outdoor festivals in charming downtown Burlington .

If you do plan to visit in the winter and need a break from skiing or snowboarding, you're in luck. You can cross-country ski and snowshoe, take snowmobile tours, learn to tap trees for maple syrup, learn to carve ice in Stowe, or try fat-biking, which is sure to get your blood pumping on a chilly day. You can even stay at the Trapp Family Lodge, owned by the Trapps of "The Sound of Music" fame.

There's no place like Washington State, the dreamy northernmost state in the Pacific Northwest. From the eco-lodges and whale watching opportunities in the San Juan Islands to the river floating and mountain towns of the northeastern part of the state, it's a stunning place for true outdoor adventurers to spend a week.

Hikers will be thrilled to learn that Washington has three national parks and one of them ( Olympic National Park) contains within its boundaries the Hoh Rainforest. It's one of the continental U.S.'s very few temperate rainforests and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

North of the Hoh Rainforest is the San Juan Islands , known for orca sightings, island eco-lodges, and remote fishing and paddling camps accessible only by seaplane or ferry. Head east from there, and you'll hit North Cascades National Park or the Mount Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest, both of which are ripe with multi-day backpacking routes and plenty of peak-bagging opportunities. On the other side of the mountains are plenty of hiking, biking, fishing, and camping opportunities with generally smaller elevation changes, making it an excellent place for beginner athletes to play outside.

Colorado is known for some of the most amazing skiing in the country, especially since it has dozens of massive ski resorts—Vail alone covers more than 5,200 acres. Colorado gets very cold, and since more than 20 ski resorts have top elevations above 10,000 feet, the snow stays very dry and fluffy. That makes powder days a common occurrence, and some resorts average more than 400 inches of snow per year. Skiing through July 4 is common at Arapahoe Basin. And Ouray has a reputation for world-class ice climbing.

Summer visitors have just as much to look forward to, from living the wild west life at a ranch near Durango or Crested Butte to walking around historical cowboy towns like Tin Cup and Silverton. Many of the ski resorts transition to mountain bike and hiking resorts in the summer, and the area around Grand Junction is a popular place to rent bikes and cycle between wineries and orchards.

If you've got a national parks pass, you might as well pay a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park , which has more than 350 miles of hiking and backpacking trails (and stunning high-altitude campsites.) Oh, and skiers don't have to change gears in the summer; sandboarding is a popular activity at the state's Great Sand Dunes National Park. And the little-known Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is rarely crowded, even on summer weekends.

Getty / Mona Makela Photography

It's not called the "Land of Enchantment" for nothing. New Mexico has no shortage of geological wonders for travelers to explore.

The state's Guadalupe Mountains house Carlsbad Caverns National Park , an epic site for cave exploration. It's where you'll find the largest cave chamber in the country at 4,000 feet long. Because the cave system is so huge, even guests with a touch of claustrophobia will find plenty of areas to explore. If you don't mind a tighter squeeze, take the more strenuous tour through Slaughter Canyon.

Don't want to go underground? Head to Taos for skiing or hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing in the summer, or spend the day soaking and swimming at a natural hot springs resort in Santa Fe. There's no shortage of golf in New Mexico, and the state's several internationally recognized Dark Sky Parks host astronomy events and moonlight hikes all summer long. New Mexico is a true year-round destination, though it can be exceedingly hot in the summer for hiking and camping at lower elevations.

West Virginia

Getty / Sean Pavone

Home to the country's newest state park, a relatively small population, affordable hotels, and plenty of remote places to play, it's no surprise that the secret is out about how fantastic West Virginia is for outdoor activities.

Aside from the hiking, whitewater rafting, and camping available in New River Gorge National Park , West Virginia's small towns offer a plethora of outdoor experiences. Rock climbing and paddling (including kayaking, paddleboarding, and rafting) are popular sports in the state, and there are plenty of places for beginners to get outside.

West Virginia is also home to a huge variety of eco- and nature resorts, from those focused on paddling (like Adventures on the Gorge or ACE Adventure Resort ) to resorts focused on blending luxury into the outdoors, like the Greenbrier . Because the state is relatively uncrowded, peaceful activities like bird watching, foraging, forest bathing, and fishing are also big draws.

Michigan gets most of the love in the Midwest when it comes to outdoor travel, but cross the border into Wisconsin and you'll find a second outdoor wonderland ripe with things to do. The college town of Madison is one of the most active cities in the Midwest, with more than 200 parks in town, several long running and cycling paths, and kayak/paddle trails on the river through the heart of downtown.

Head north from Madison and you'll find Door County, which covers a peninsula in Lake Michigan. It's made up of charming waterfront villages like Egg Harbor and Sturgeon Bay, and if you go even further north, you'll reach Apostles Island National Lakeshore. It's world-famous for its cliffside kayaking and island campsites, many of which are only accessible via canoe or kayak.

Wisconsin's heartland offers plenty as well, from fishing and ATV tours to hiking trails, wilderness resorts, and plenty of farms and orchards where families can get their hands dirty in the great outdoors. You'll want to visit between late spring and mid-autumn unless you want to contend with snow.

All-Season Outdoor Adventures

Rochester, NY doesn’t fit your typical definition of a city. It’s an urban oasis, true, surrounded by some of the most magnificent topographic features in all of Upstate New York. Adventure through the “Grand Canyon of the East” or stroll the man-made marvel that is the Erie Canal. It’s a nature lovers’ paradise, a photographer’s dream and a place for all to feel at home.

Pack your bags and take to the roads for an unforgettable trip in a destination full of surprises. Let us help you plan – check out our all-season outdoor activities below and use this itinerary as your inspiration and your guide.

Pack a picnic and kick off your trip with a day spent at the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth State Park! Head to any of the city’s major  Wegmans  locations and select a feast fit for the whole family. Grab a sandwich from the Sub Shop, a slice of pizza to-go, hand rolled sushi packed fresh or a pre-portioned salad. Load your basket and bring your blanket for an outdoor meal in a serene natural setting. Don’t forget the drinks and a bakery item as a special treat to enjoy at meal’s end.

Then head 40 minutes south of the city, where  Letchworth State Park  offers outdoor recreation in all four seasons and some spectacular views that just can’t be beat. Choose from more than 66 miles of hiking trails that bring you through the woods and past water features and falls. White water raft down the Genesee River. Take a hot air balloon and soar above the gorge. Snowshoe or cross-country ski in the winter. Stop into the year-round Humphrey Nature Center for special programs, lectures and guided tours before your visit is complete.

On your way back to the city, swing by one of Rochester’s local farms!

Stokoe Farms  bring three seasons of fun with three amazing events. In the summer, the blooms begin with a vibrant field of sunflowers and warm-weather fun, including a Twilight Experience and picnic dinner. In late September and into October, the farm hosts a Pumpkin Patch & Harvest Fest, with over 35 family-friendly activities to enjoy – including wagon rides, a bounce pillow, bee line, low ropes course, Farmer 500 Race Track and mini-pumpkin launcher. In the snowy season, visit for the Christmas Tree Farm where pre-cut or to-be-cut trees await, along with holiday arrangements, gift shop items, hot apple cider and lunch at the Old Barn Grill.

Wickham Farms  has more than 20 outdoor attractions on-site that the family can enjoy together. Lawn games and mini golf bring out the competitive side, while playgrounds and activity areas allow little ones to go at their own pace. Summer sees the farm’s sunflower field in full bloom and offers strawberry picking, while fall brings pumpkin and apple picking, hayrides and harvest fun.

Food Stop!  Check out the Big Barn Café for lunch options like pulled pork and apple butter grilled cheese or grab-and-go pizzas, pretzels and the signature “Shake Up” chilly sweet treat on the Pizza Porch. Grab some fresh popped kettle corn to go!

Settle hungry tummies and stay out in the fresh air with dinner at the  Genesee Brew House . An outdoor terrace overlooks High Falls and the Genesee River in downtown Rochester, while indoor and rooftop seating offer plenty of extra space. With its pub-style fare and 16 taps pouring the freshest beer in Rochester, this menu has all the familiar favorites – hamburgers, chicken wings, salads and sandwiches, and some Rochester specialties, like Zweigle’s Red or White Hots (hot dogs).

Start day two of your trip with a visit to the  City of Rochester Public Market  (open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays). Grab a breakfast bite at one of the many cafés, food stands or coffee shops, then browse the market’s outdoor and indoor vendor sheds, bursting with fresh seasonal produce, baked goods and food items, merchandise, clothing, handmade and homemade items.  (Or check out the market on select summer nights for their famed Food Truck Rodeo!)

Then, go wild with a day at the  Seneca Park Zoo ! Open year-round, rain or shine, every season is a great one at the Zoo. Discover animals from the savanna, the rocky coasts, the tropics and more. Watch as the California sea lions charm the crowd, feed the giraffes, observe the lions roar and play and delight in the fluffy and adorable red pandas. There’s an important education piece here too for our youngest visitors. Your support directly helps save animals from extinction, as the Seneca Park Zoo remains a national leader in species survival and conservation action, globally and locally.

Food Stop!  Looking for lunch? The Eagle’s Landing Café and the Crater Canteen offer great food for families within the Zoo, including “Little Cub” combos, meals from the garden, the grill, the fryer and some snack options as well.

In the afternoon or early evening, head to the towns of Pittsford or Fairport to walk the Erie Canal path or rent bikes to enjoy the route at a faster pace. The canal offers beauty in every season, with many boutique shops and restaurants dotting the path as you go.

Grab tickets in Pittsford to enjoy a 90-minute cruise along the Erie Canal with  The Sam Patch Tour Boat , a replica packet boat that offers public tours. Learn the history of New York State’s legendary canal, considered to be the eighth wonder of the world by some. Kids will love the quintessential canal experience of passing through Lock 32, a century-old lock that brings you in through its massive 40-ton gates and floats you gently upward as the lock fills. (Or check out the  Colonial Belle  in Fairport, the largest tour boat on the Erie Canal, family owned and operated since 1989.)

Dine in at the  Erie Grill at the Del Monte Lodge , where big windows overlook the Erie Canal path and its waters. A seasonal menu serves up some amazing and original entrees and desserts, and the cocktail list is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for the adults in the group.

End your night with a sweet treat at  Pittsford Farms Dairy , whose landmark dairy dates back to 1814. The Dairy uses the old fashion method of vat pasteurization, which takes longer but makes their milk and ice cream taste sweeter. Grab a cone or hand-packed pint of one of their unique homemade flavors to-go or pick out a bakery pastry (lemon squares, chocolate bombs, filled croissants and scones, cupcakes, cookies and more) for the road. In the winter leading up to the holidays, stop by for hot cocoa by the outdoor fire, fresh fir trees and a mini-Christmas market.

A short drive from Rochester lies another wild adventure with  Hidden Valley Animal Adventure  in Varysburg, NY. Here you’ll find an up-close and personal experience with the animals unlike that of a typical zoo, as camels, bison, zebras, ostrich and more come right up to your car! The safari drive-thru experience is the most iconic of Hidden Valley’s offerings, but the fun doesn’t stop there. Families can also enjoy a small animal adventure and petting zoo with goats, bunnies, donkeys and other more docile species available for interaction.

Food Stop!  The Trailside Grill offers a great menu for on-site dining, with unique offerings like the Water Buffalo Patty Melt, Bison Burger or Bison Chili and Ciabatta. Grab some ice cream to go at the end of your day.

Soak up the summer sun when you catch some waves at  Roseland Wake Park ! Roseland is the first and only cable wake park in the northeast, with a 5-tower, full-sized cable system and 2-tower training cable system ready for riders. Learn to ride with an easy program designed for first time wakeboarders or get out on the water and hit the ramps and rails spaced out throughout the park. Rentals, retail, a snack bar and a party room are also found on-site.

Back in Rochester, spend the afternoon relaxing and taking in the local park scene:

Cobb’s Hill Park  features one of the most scenic city skyline views of Rochester, NY and a ¾ mile paved loop around its hilltop reservoir.

Mendon Ponds Park  is the largest of the parks in Monroe County, with more than 2,500 acres of woodlands, ponds and wetlands.

Genesee Valley Park  and the Genesee River Trail offers an urban adventure with 3.4 miles of hard-surface trail linking to downtown Rochester.

Powder Mills Park  is a sight in the spring, with a Daffodil Trail spanning just .7 miles and bringing visitors past a field of spring daffodils in bloom.

Highland Park  is the site of the May Lilac Festival, with beautiful lilac bushes in bloom, as well as memorials and gardens including The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Victims’ Rights Memorial, AIDS Remembrance Garden and Lamberton Conservatory.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Kick up your feet and stay a while with these local accommodations, fit for the whole family!

Situated in the scenic hills,  Woodcliff Hotel & Spa  takes you out of the downtown scene and into a relaxing retreat. It’s truly a resort hotel, with an on-site nine-hole golf course, full-service spa, café and restaurant, outdoor pool, fire pits and more. After a long day in the outdoors, no one in the family will be complaining about a stay at Woodcliff, with a little something to suit every taste and style.

Staybridge Suites  also brings a little of that outdoor flair indoors with its location right on Brooks Landing along the Genesee River. Suites are fully equipped with kitchens, wireless high-speed internet and a cozy living room area and workstation for the long-term visits. Enjoy free laundry, an indoor pool and spa, library, 24-hour Bridgemart, fitness center and same-day dry cleaning services, as well.

Couple your dinner on day two with an overnight at  The Del Monte Lodge Renaissance Rochester Hotel & Spa . Located right along the Erie Canal in Pittsford, NY, you can sink into its stylish comfort with pillowtop beds and complimentary wireless internet, and an award-winning restaurant and spa.

Outdoor Activities & Adventures in Washington, DC

Find the best options for hiking, biking, boating and picnicking your way through the nation’s capital..

Walk your way through DC and beyond

With its ample sidewalks, abundant national parks and miles of panoramic trails, Washington, DC is an extremely exercise-friendly destination. Want to take advantage of all your fitness options? We suggest you start by exploring  Rock Creek Park . The 1,700-acre park in Northwest DC is an urban oasis with 32 miles of trails for hiking and plenty of paved roads (closed to cars) for biking. You can even go horseback riding in the National Park Service-run outdoor destination.

The Capital Crescent Trail, which runs from Georgetown all the way up to Silver Spring, Md., also offers scenic pathways for hikers, bikers and joggers, while the 185-mile C&O Canal trail, which also runs through Georgetown, boasts beautiful views of DC’s oldest neighborhood.

Capital Bikeshare

Pedal and paddle past the city’s iconic sights

Sure you can see DC by tour bus, but for those wanting to take advantage of our bicycle-friendly city,  Capital Bikeshare ,  Unlimited Biking  or DC Cycling Concierge are great ways to check out DC’s must-see sights.

There are dozens of Capital Bikeshare racks across the city where you can borrow a bike with a day pass, or book a tour to see the sights via bicycle (or even a Segway!) with Unlimited Biking. Miles of bike paths and bike lanes mean you can peddle past everything from the monuments and memorials to quaint neighborhoods in all four quadrants of the city.

If you want a new view of the monuments, you can rent a paddle boat in the warmer months and make your way around the Tidal Basin, or get out on the glorious Potomac River by renting a canoe, kayak or even a standup paddleboard from Boating in DC's  Key Bridge Boathouse in Georgetown or Ballpark Boathouse on the Capitol Riverfront .

Relax with a picnic in the city

If you simply want to relax outdoors, pack a picnic and head to one of DC’s lovely public or private parks .

U.S. National Arboretum

Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens  in Upper Northwest allows guests to picnic in the historic home’s gorgeous gardens.  Meridian Hill Park , which was once a part of John Quincy Adams’ private estate, is run by the National Park Service today. The park still features the original cascading fountain and on Sundays, locals get together for a boisterous drum circle. It’s also a lovely place for a picnic.

The  National Arboretum , a 446-acre park with a diversity of flora and fauna (bonsai trees, azaleas, flowering cherry trees to name a few) is also home to the Instagram-worthy original Capitol Columns. The park has designated areas for picnicking, as does  Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens , another outdoor oasis featuring waterlilies, lotuses, bamboo and more on the banks of the Anacostia River.

Outdoor Adventures

IMPORTANT: Fort Collins is surrounded by seemingly countless outdoor recreation adventures waiting to be explored.  Please always adhere to Leave No Trace Principles so generations to come can enjoy the same experience.

The first step to take before embarking on any outdoor adventure in Colorado is to be prepared. For trail conditions and messages about areas across the state, visit  https://trails.colorado.gov/ or download the COTREX app.

Fort Collins  continues to rate highly on lists of towns that offer exceptional outdoor adventures and access to excellent recreational facilities. A quick glance at locals enjoying the city’s 50 parks, 280-plus miles of trails, including paved and unpaved walking and  biking  trails, and you’ll want to walk or ride in their shoes for a day.

Fort Collins is also home to four recreation centers and  swimming pools , three public  golf courses , a racquet sport complex, two sheets of ice for organized hockey games as well as free skating, a skateboard park, and off-leash dog parks.

And let's not forget all of the camping , hiking , fishing , rafting , stand up paddling and kayaking  options. Fort Collins is full of outdoor adventures for every type of person. These activities can all range from easy to difficult depending on what type of adventure you are looking for.

Not to mention, Fort Collins is also full of more leisurely-centered activities like birdwatching , horseback riding , golfing and hot air balloon rides . There truly is something for everyone to enjoy.

During the winter season visitors can enjoy outdoor adventures such as snowshoeing , fat biking and cross country skiing . And, if you are looking for a fun way to explore the scenic byways of the Cache la Poudre River Canyon and Peak to Peak Highway, Majestic Mountains Scenic Rides is a fantastic option.

When it comes to wildlife watching bring your binoculars and enjoy seeing abundant winged and four-legged creatures. For myriad birds and big fauna—moose, elk, big horn sheep, and deer—cruise up the Cache la Poudre Canyon. Explore Laramie River Road or pop over to the other side of Cameron Pass and visit the State Park Moose Visitor Center. And never forget, these are wild animals—not pets, not zoo critters—so don’t approach or feed them and always view from a distance and use caution. Wild animals are unpredictable and can be dangerous. It’s stressful for them and could get you injured.

A Travel Program For Active Active Adults 55+

SOAR is Montgomery County Recreation’s “Senior Outdoor Adventures in Recreation” program, designed for active adults, ages 55+. You'll rarely have a better time than on one of the SOAR excursions to the performing arts, regional festivals, historic sites, guided tours shopping venues and ballgames, among other activities.

Each activity or trip requires a substantial amount of walking and/or physical exertion. Program participants should be in good physical condition and consult with their physician if they have any concerns before registering or participating in an activity.

Every effort will be made to accommodate individuals with disabilities on each trip. However, due to the historic nature and outdoor adventure components of many trips, this might not always be possible. Please call the SOAR trip coordinator at 240-777-4926 to discuss your individual needs and concerns.

Trips are subject to change.

All trips depart from the Olney Manor Park ,  located at 16605 Georgia Avenue, Olney.

Olney Manor park is accessible by both automobile and public bus. From Georgia Avenue, turn into Emory Lane and take the second left and follow signs for Skate Park and Ballfield #1.

Exploring tourists' motivations, constraints, and negotiations regarding outdoor recreation trips during COVID-19 through a focus group study

The current COVID-19 outbreak has duly influenced tourists' psychology and subsequently their behavior and decision making to participate in outdoor activities. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate tourists' motivations, perceived constraints, and negotiation strategies to participate in outdoor recreation trips, within the current COVID-19 context. To explore and categorize motivating factors, constraints, and negotiation strategies, we employed a qualitative approach via semi-structured online focus group discussion with 16 tourists (mostly residents of Utah, United States) during late summer 2020. First, COVID-19 related restrictions and fewer opportunities to go outdoors were found to encourage outdoor recreation, for novelty-seeking and experiencing normalcy. Through content analysis, we found that tourists experience a blend of personal, social, practical, and ethical constraints. Additionally, we identified how tourists negotiate their constraints through different ways: by extensive planning and information searching, avoiding crowds, and changing leisure aspirations. Finally, we discuss theoretical and managerial implications of the study, followed by recommendations for future research.

Management implications: Understanding of tourists' motivations, constraints, and negotiation strategies-relevant to outdoor recreation trips-provides several managerial implications to destination managers and marketers, as outlined below:•Lack of centralized and reliable information was frequently cited as a constraint in the focus group discussions. In order to provide adequate and timely information to potential participations, we proposed a novel website template including details about information to be presented.•As our study sheds light on tourists' companionship preferences, activity choice, and evaluation of a destination's COVID-related operational practices, we propose several advertising strategies and destination operational guidelines to attract tourists.

Keywords: COVID-19; Constraints; Information search; Motivations; Negotiation; Outdoor recreation; Tourism.
