Ryanair personal item size: 6 perfect Ryanair 40x20x25 bags

If you’re flying with Ryanair, everyone gets a 40x20x25cm item of luggage you can take on board at no extra fee.

It doesn’t matter what luggage you’ve paid for (if any!) Every passenger gets a Ryanair personal item size bag which is 40cm x 20cm x 25cm.

This bag needs to fit under the seat in front of you and shouldn’t really go in the overhead lockers (unless the plane is really quiet and there’s plenty of space!)

Whether you’re hoping to squeeze everything you need for your whole trip into your personal item size bag (which is definitely possible for short breaks!) or you’re just using it for the few bits and bobs you’ll want to access during your flight, here are some great 40x20x25 bags suitable for the Ryanair ‘free’ personal bag.

The Travel Hack Backpack

Cabin Max Travel Hack Travel Bags for Women | Ryanair Cabin Bags 40x20x25 | Laptop Backpack - Black

  • A fashionable and space-saving womens Travel Backpack cabin size which fits under the seat. It can hold laptops up to 13", serving as a convenient option for weekend trips too.
  • Features an easy access top pocket for purses, sun glasses, phones and travel documents.
  • Fits the Ryanair 40x20x25cm' free' underseat hand luggage rules. Flies for free on all other known airlines. Lightweight design weighs just 0.6kg.

The original and the best in my personal opinion! The Travel Hack Backpack is perfectly sized for the Ryanair 40x20x25 bag. It’s surprisingly roomy with handy pockets to organise your belongings and ensure you can find everything you need during stressful airport encounters.

It’s also a great bag to use once you reach your destination and need a ‘day bag’ for busy days out and about.

  • A spacious main compartment
  • Internal mesh pockets to separate and organise belongings
  • Two water bottle holders
  • A slim front pocket that is perfect for your passport and documents
  • A padded laptop pocket at the back (can double up as an anti theft pocket when you arrive)
  • A top pocket for smaller items like your phone and keys
  • Ideal for use as a day bag when you arrive

  • Easy to carry top handle or use the adjustable padded shoulder strap. Rear trolley strap for easy attchement to larger rolling trolley luggage, fits perfectly with the Cabin Max Anode 40L
  • 40x20x25 cm Sized to fit the maximum Ryanair under the seat free hand luggage allowance.

This is a new one from Cabin Max and I absolutely love it.

This 40x20x25 vanity case is essentially a miniature hard-shell suitcase without wheels. It’s very cute and if you have paid for a larger carry on suitcase then it teams up nicely with the matching Anode Cabin Case.

Cabin Max Anode Carry On Hand Luggage Suitcase - Lightweight, Hard Shell, 4 Wheels, Combination Lock

Cabin Max Narvik 20L

Cabin Max Narvik 2.0 Stowaway 20L Trolley Case 40x20x25 cm for Ryanair Under Seat (Black)

  • Surprisingly spacious cabin luggage case with internal tablet storage. The ideal lightweight compact carry on cabin under seat suitcase.
  • Perfect for Ryanair’s under seat cabin bag 40x20x25. This flight case avoids any charges when flying on Ryanair. 40 x 20 x 25cm dimensions including wheels. Lightweight at 1.6 kg.
  • Padded internal tablet pocket. Internal compression system so you can pack to the max. Internal ‘3D’ organiser packing pocket.

If you prefer to roll your Ryanair personal sized item then I highly recommend the Cabin Max Narvik 20L. This tiny suitcase has lots of handy pockets so you can keep everything organised and easily access your necessities during the flight.

It might seem unnecessary to have wheels for such a small bag but I often find that even a small personal item can get heavy, especially when I’ve got my laptop and travel toiletries in there. There’s a lot of standing around at the airport and potentially lots of walking too, so if you want to save your back, this is the bag for you!

Best Carry-On Bag For Ryanair – Squeezing Into 2024!

Ryanair has taken minimalism to the sky. They shook up the industry with discount rates by separating the flight cost from the baggage fees. If you truly travel with pretty much nothing, you can find flights from Paris to Morocco cheaper than catching a train to Nantes.

Their cheap rates provide easy opportunities to get abroad and hook millions of budget travelers each year. Who can say no to a $10 direct flight, right? Unfortunately, if you want to travel with more than a change of clothes or two, your luggage will likely cost more than your ticket!

Low-cost airlines gotta sneak in those lost earnings somewhere, usually at the customer’s expense. I can respect that about Ryanair. Unlike other, more expensive airlines, they don’t pretend like they aren’t trying to squeeze money out of you every step of the way. And at least some of it is optional.

Baggage fees are a natural place to start. It seems fair enough until you start reading the fine print. Carry-on-size definitions on Ryanair are much smaller than you’d expect. Nobody in their right mind would call this small size reasonable, but that is clearly not the goal here. Every time you fly with them, the seats get smaller, and the cushion wears thin. We’re only a few months away from gate agents breaking out the measuring tape in the name of a 30-euro bag fee.

You always think you can get away with traveling with less, but only a few select travelers can spend more than a day or two living out of one free carry-on bag. Three days of peace and music is doable with one carry-on-sized container, but sometimes you’ve got to crumble and accept the extra charge. I mean, if you’re going to have a better time and you can afford it, it’s hard to argue against it.

Ryanair knows that and continues to crank up the argument.

small travel bag for ryanair

Allow us to introduce you to the rebuttal. These backpacks are at the frontlines of discount travel, packing more storage options into less space and helping you march off the plane and straight out the door, 34 euros poorer and in Amman.

These carry-on bags are savvy travelers’ responses to rules that got too strict. While no backpack on the market can magically turn 40 liters of storage into a 30 x 20 package, these bags store more than their size and maximise the storage space they do have.

You’ve got to plan ahead to beat budget airline companies and keep your costs down. It starts with the right carry-on, so let’s dive into the qualifications before looking at the most qualified backpacks.

What is the Ryanair Carry-on Bag Size?

Small. Really, really small!

Especially if you hadn’t flown with them since 2018 when the carry-on size decreased. Each ticket now only comes with one personal bag that can fit underneath the seat in front of you. The listed dimensions of that bag are 40cmx20cmx25cm or roughly 20 litres of storage. Ouch!

The good news is that Ryanair does allow for a modicum of flexibility. Those numbers can represent any three angles of your bag, so a suitcase that is 40 cm long is just as acceptable as a backpack that is 40 cm tall, as long as the other two edges stay within the lines.

Compare the size of their hand baggage-only fares to Luftansa’s (55cm x 40cm x 23cm), and British Airways (40 x 30 x 15cm), and the good news turns bad. The key to Ryanair’s infamous policy is their strict interpretation of the definition of small.

A bag that you can get away with on other airlines will get stopped at the door at Ryanair. Travelers who don’t want clean underwear or folks heading to the beach might be able to stretch their free carry-on bag out to a week, but realistically, 20 liters plus the clothes you’re wearing on the plane will get you through a long weekend.

small travel bag for ryanair

For an extra fee, you can travel with that carry-on bag plus a 10 kg piece (55cm x 40cm x 20cm.)  This service is called paying for “priority,” and it comes in a limited supply. Anything else, or anything bigger, will be heading underneath the cabin.

Don’t think you’re out of the woods just for upgrading. This 10 kg piece will usually top out at around 40 liters, which can be a tight squeeze. It’s the bare minimum most one-bag travelers would recommend, but there is still a chance staff might pull you up with a 40-liter backpack stuffed full.

That’s why the secret of great one-bag travel is multiple bags. Priority gives you a larger cabin bag in addition to your free personal item. That means with the right backpack combination you can walk on the plane with 55 litres of storage, which is more than enough to get you through a month in most tropical places.

Not every trip ends at the beach. Sometimes to get where you’re going, you’ll need a bit more gear, like for camping or winter trips for example. Each passenger can pay to check up to three 20 kg pieces of luggage too.

If you know you’ll have to check a backpack, doing it online will always be cheaper than being stopped at check-in. And they will check. Gate agent’s eyes light up with dollar signs at the sight of dirty hiking bags stuffed to the brim.

Every backpack on our list will qualify as a carry-on bag for Ryanair, some in the overhead compartment, and some as a free personal item. Be sure to check before you travel if you need to upgrade.

Ryanair opened up flights to a bunch of different destinations to draw in tourism. We have created this expert guide on the top 10 Ryanair destinations . It details who this location is ideal for, the best time to visit, and (most importantly) what you can actually get up to while there.

How Much is a Ryanair Carry-On Bag?

You’ll want to bite the bullet early on all luggage purchases, both to make sure there is still room in the priority class with access to overhead bins and also to avoid the higher fees that come with same-day luggage checking.

The cold hard truth is that if a gate agent decides your bag is too big, there’s not much you can do to plead your case. You might get away with it a time or two, but eventually, you’ll have to buy some extra luggage and it’ll cost you a fair bit more.

Nomatic Travel Pack

The Priority Pass is Ryanair’s solution. They make things sound fancy by emphasizing your two free cabin luggage options, but really it’s the one free bag plus one 10kg case. You’re paying for an extra backpack and an earlier boarding group.

A lot like mushrooms, priority is best purchased online! Even if you call a Ryanair call center instead of booking your bags online, the prices will be higher. Nothing compares to the fees they’ll place at airport ticket desks though!

A good rule of thumb for anything involving Ryanair is to take care of things before you get to the airport. Thankfully, they finally stopped charging us for not having our tickets printed out, but there are still plenty of extra fees the company looks to tack on while checking you in.

The fees are real, and they are enforced. Going by carry-on size restrictions, Ryanair is literally the worst.

The Best Bags For Ryanair Flights

There’s carry-on ready, and then there is Ryanair ready. The budget ticket seller makes no secret of their passionate enforcement of draconian bag requirements. Just like the black market adjusting to the police increasing cell phone monitoring, some companies have made it their mission to stay ahead of the rules.

The choices are split between free bags that may have to go in the overhead compartment and carry-ons guaranteed to fight under tight seats.

Just remember, the art to travelling carry-on only with Ryanair is not just the bag itself, but learning how to properly pack your bag for flying on the chicken bus of the skies!

We’ll show you a few backpacks that bring the power back to the passengers!

It is a versatile and feature-heavy backpack designed specifically for travel purposes.

It has a sleek and minimalist design with a capacity of 14 -21 liters (it extends its capacity by zipping up/down) . It is an under-seat, carry-on size backpack that meets all known airline requirements (including Ryaniair), making it suitable for both short trips and longer travels.

The backpack is designed for efficient organization and has loads of different compartments and pockets. It features a full-perimeter zippered clamshell opening which allows easy access to the main compartment. The Tortuga Travel Pack is a serious piece of equipment. The revamped 30L version of the Travel Pack has been custom designed to be accepted for carry on all over the world. With this bag, Tortuga has cemented it place among the best luggage brands in the world .

As well as being globally carry-on ready, it’s also got a phenomenal design, great organization, and it has HUGE amounts of space. Tortuga might be the company that best knows how to create space within their bags so you can pack the compartments to your heart’s content.

Note that there isa 40L version available but in order to spare you all the wrath of European airlines like Ryanair, we suggest using the smaller 30L version.

I loved taking this pack around Europe as it was accessible, comfy to carry and fit all my gear. One thing I noticed about this pack is how durable and strong the zippers feel.

Peak Design – Travel Pack 30L

Peak Design travel backpack review

  • Dimensions (CM): 53cm x 34cm x 18cm
  • Capacity (L): 27l extendable to 33l

Ryanair’s stringent carry-on restrictions demand a bag that can fit within the specified dimensions without sacrificing utility. The Peak Design Travel Pack 30L is designed with carry-on travelers in mind, with its well-thought-out design. Offering 30 liters of space, it is perfectly sized to comply with Ryanair’s carry-on restrictions, yet spacious enough to carry all you need for a short trip.

The pack’s innovative organizational system, complete with adaptable dividers and various pockets, allows travelers to maximize space, so packing becomes an art rather than a struggle. The external compression straps help keep everything compact, ensuring compliance with airline size requirements.

tbbteam - Peak Design Travel Pack 30

Its weatherproof shell offers protection against unexpected spills or rain, providing peace of mind during transit. Additionally, the quick zip access ensures that everything inside the bag is readily accessible, which can be a lifesaver during security checks or when retrieving items during the flight.

WANDRD – PRVKE Lite

WANDRD PRVKE Lite

  • Dimensions (CM): 40 X 28 X 14 cm
  • Capacity (L): 11-16
  • Price (€): 224

WANDRD’s flagship PRVKE model can work as a carry-on on most airlines, but to get onto Ryanair they had to think smaller. The Lite bag takes things down a size while still bringing cushioned, organized storage to a solid amount of gear. You’ll still have plenty of divider options and even a laptop compartment, all in a great under-seat size that’s kind on the shoulders too.

PRVKE’s dimensions are right at the edge of the baggage policy, getting under the legal limit without giving up a single Centimeter more. You might have to answer a few tough questions if the bag is stuffed full, but with enough patience, you can stuff this solid bag inside any steel cage. The roll top feature means you can throw your hoody or a few extra bits back in once you arrive at your destination.

If you’re looking for a similar but slightly larger setup, then check out the WANDRD PRVKE 31L instead.

Stubble & Co – The Roll Top

Stubble & Co Roll Top Mini

  • Dimensions (CM): 41 x 28 x 12
  • Capacity (L): 14
  • Price (€): 107

The Roll Top is a commuting specialist that works great whether your route is underground or in the air. The same sleek features that help this bag fight snugly over your shoulders in an amphibious march to work will also help the bag slide under the seat. The direct access laptop pocket means once your bag gets beneath the seat, you won’t have to zip it open until touchdown.

If you’re feeling like flirting with the limits even further, Stubble & Co, has a larger roll-top backpack with an extra 6 liters of storage, all while only adding on 3 centimetres of length, width, and height. Leave an extra t-shirt behind, and you can likely still sneak it onboard.

If it’s the hipster style you’re looking for and the Stubble & Co Roll Top doesn’t quite hit the mark, then check out our round-up of the best hipster backpacks on the market for some more ideas.

Osprey – Transporter Panel Loader

Osprey Transporter Panel Loader

  • Dimensions (CM): 47 x 33 x 23
  • Capacity (L): 25
  • Price (€): 100

The Transporter’s dimensions are a dangerous game. If you fully stuff the Panel Loader full, There’s a good chance this backpack can get flagged at the gate. Worst case scenario, it will still easily fit in the overhead compartment, and thanks to its lack of stiff joints, you might be able to squeeze it under a seat or two with a bit of elbow grease!

Osprey switched up their usual operating procedure, creating a super flexible shell that can collapse down to a small stature. While there is still plenty of comfort against your spine, Osprey skipped the Airscape back panel on this bag, greatly increasing shrinkability. An internal water bottle pocket finishes the job off, resulting in a sleek backpack that can fit in tight spaces.

If you’re looking for some different options when it comes to Osprey bags, maybe you’ve decided to check in some bigger luggage, then check out our guide to the best Osprey bags on the market .

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

Osprey – Quasar

Osprey Quasar 26L

  • Dimensions (CM): 48 x 30 x 27
  • Capacity (L): 26
  • Price (€): 102

The Quasar marks the start of our backpacks that flirt a bit with the overhead compartment.  Take advantage of the compacting side straps, and you can still easily pack this bag for a weekend trip, squish it under the seat with a 100% success rate.

The 26-liter bag has a few great exterior features that make the bag feel both bigger and smaller. A durable mesh cord allows you to strap on a sweater or oversized tools, and a top bungee connection helps the bag squeeze tightly together to slip into smaller spaces. When it’s time to ease your bag into the gate side metal box, remove your sweater and fit right in. I have personally taken this bag as my “under seat” bag on countless flights and never had any problems including with Ryanair. Check out my Osprey Quasar review .

Tropicfeel  – SHELL

  • Dimensions (CM): 51 x 30 x 19
  • Capacity (L): 20-40
  • Price (€): 159

This backpack takes on many different forms. Fully loaded, it’s practically a mobile closet with a detachable hanger, toiletry kit, a tech pouch, and a camera cube. Unfortunately, at maximum size, you’ll also need priority. Start deconstructing things, and suddenly you’ve got a  great bag to beat Ryanair.

You can squeeze things down over 6 liters smaller to get through security and then unfurl a kangaroo pouch perfect for souvenirs. You can even add and remove hip straps to affect the bag’s overall size further. The adaptability of the bag means you can slim down for your flight and open it back up once you arrive.

No matter which setting you’ve employed, it’s got a tough waterproof exterior and organised interior that come together for a great backpack.

Not sure if the SHELL is right for you, why not have a look at the TropicFeel NEST instead, it’s still 16L and has similar expandable features.

Cabin Max – Memphis 30

Cabin max Memphis 30

  • Price (€):  60

This affordable and functional bag was custom designed for aviation and will slot perfectly under your seat on all Ryanair and Wizair flights. You can wear the Memphis 30 ear as a backpack, carry it by the top handles or even combine with your rolling luggage using the rear handle pass-through.

If offers 24L internal capacity with built in packing compression system, a nice padded laptop/tech compartment, 3D packing pockets, water bottle pocket and organiser compartment with key clip and then a discrete rear ‘secret’ pocket. Padded backpack straps with adjustable chest strap and sunglasses loop. Aesthetically, its not the prettiest bag and my first thought was that it looked a bit ‘cheap’ but after trying it I can say its honesty a very well designed and usable carry on backpack.

Stubble & Co – Adventure Bag

The Stubble & Co adventure bag

  • Dimensions (CM): 55 x 38 x 24
  • Capacity (L): 42
  • Price (€): 217

It’s easy enough to leave home with a slim pack, but everyone’s bag fills up along the road.

Once you land, this bag really shows out. Stubble & Co’s new model comes with features from across the aisle. You won’t find many backpacks with a reflective, stormproof cover and a padded laptop compartment/secret pocket combo. The new streamlined shape sits like a jetpack on your back, ready for takeoff.

Wanna know more? Of course, you do! We’ve gone to the effort of writing a full post on the Stubble & Co Adventure Bag .

Mahi Leather – The Dixie Boho

Mahi Leather Dexie Boho

  • Dimensions (CM): 30 x 29 x 10
  • Capacity (L): 9
  • Price (€): 136

Dixie Bohoes bounce from Texas to Tennessee, strapped up in leather bags and bangles. Mahi leather is along for the ride with one thumb stuck out by your side. When some other materials break down, this full-grain Leather won’t even crack. This bag only bends and morphs with time.

Brass fittings and YKK tell the world this company is dedicated to taking care of the little things and letting the leather do the talking. The genuine suppleness of the leather takes on different shapes through use, further whistling dixie. High-quality materials and focused detail work are a great combination to provide genuine craftsmanship no matter where the value fare takes you.

The best thing about the bag though, it’s easily below the size limitations for Ryanair carry-on luggage, so you’ll never have to stress.

Like the look of this leather bag? Check out the best leather bags on the market for some more options.

Aer – Go Tote 2

AER Go Tote 2

  • Dimensions (CM): 38 x 28 x 13
  • Capacity (L): 17.5
  • Price (€): 82

The Go Tote is a sneaky way to get on board with a whole lot of storage. Gate agents aren’t used to providing an over-the-shoulder bag with the same scrutiny as backpacking backpacks. While it’s a few liters lighter than those more traditional models, it’s also guaranteed to qualify as a free option on any flight.

Those fools have no idea! Below the surface, this is no ordinary tote. Thanks to nifty organization options and a laptop compartment, this bag can keep your gear organized and fit in a whole load more than you might imagine. It has six separate pockets ready to outscore any Jansport. That proficiency takes this bag places… and does it without having to pay any extra baggage fees!

Looking for a tote-style bag but not too sure about the Aer? Have a look at our guide to the best messenger bags for a few more ideas.

AER – Go Sling 2

AER go sling 2

  • Dimensions (CM): 24 x 13 x 5
  • Capacity (L): 0.8
  • Price (€): 54

This bit of gear is the backpack equivalent of a swiss army knife. If you pack smart and dress loosely, you can get some storage for free with this close-fitting chest piece. The slim storage capacity is chock full of mesh, zippers, and dividers that split up your gear and keep your cords untangled. Most importantly, it does all that while fitting underneath your clothing.

If they’re going to treat us like cattle, we’re going to turn this game into Animal Farm. Sneaking an extra bag onboard exists on the outskirts of the rules, sort of like counting cards at a casino. If you get caught, you might get invited into the backroom and tossed around, but ultimately you’ll just pay a small fee.

Sling-style bags are a great option when it comes to carry-on travel as they’re small, fit most of your valuables and often go undetected. If you’re in the market for one but want a few more options then check out our roundup of the best sling bags for a few more ideas.

Final Thoughts on Finding The Best Ryanair Carry on Bag

You didn’t spend a month searching Skyscanner for the year’s cheapest getaways just to piss it all away on extra luggage fees. To really save money on your next trip, carry-on bags are the way forward. Spending a bit of extra money on the right bag now will save you money on each and every flight.

Right now, you can find 67 flights on Ryanair’s website that are cheaper than the price to check a 20 Kg bag. The right carry-on bag can cut your travel budget in half. That sounds great, but you’ll be surprised how challenging it is to cram things down to 15 Liters.

Osprey Farpoint 40L Backpack

If your bag is on the edge of glory, we’d prescribe paying for priority upfront and half a Xan after you get through security to ensure a smooth travel day. Even if you’ve already taken the pledge and splurged for a checked bag, you should still consciously choose your carry-on.

A good carry-on bag will ensure everything you need stays by your side and with airlines potentially scrapping liquid rules soon, it’s an even more convenient way to travel.

Budget airline or Eithad, there’s a real chance things get lost along the way. While your checked bag does the legwork, your carry-on bag should store a few days of gear, so you don’t have to spend the first afternoon of your vacation bikini shopping.

Ultimately, there is no carry-on bag that has truly hacked Ryanair. Every bag that you can fit underneath the seat had to make some serious sacrifices to make it happen. The bags on this list soften the blow while still maximizing storage to give you a fighter’s chance.

Most of the luggage listed above is still too large in at least one dimension to qualify as a RyanAir ‘personal item’.

I just spent a long time trying to find a backpack which definitely falls within the 40x25x20 limit. I found a few that were 42 or 43 high; these ought to be acceptable to all but the most zealous of RyanAir staff – e.g. the Deuter Race 8 backpack, Montane Trailblazer 8 and the Rab Tensor 10 – but these are all 8-10 litres, and still potentially going to be rejected.

I eventually came across the Fjallraven Kanken Laptop 13 (the other varieties of Kanken are just a bit too big one way or another, but this one is 35x25x16). So far this is the largest backpack I have found which is definitely within the RyanAir restrictions – combined with an Osprey Farpoint 40 as a 10KG carry-on, this gives me a pretty useful amount of storage for longer trips, and a nice daypack for when out and about. Probably enough for two-three days somewhere warm on its own.

Another trick for reducing luggage (if you’re not traveling in the winter) is to layer up your clothes when flying. They will only see the top layer going through the gate. As soon as you’re on the plane head to the washroom and remove the outer layers. Also always wear your heaviest and largest footwear on to the plane.

You should review luggage vests or jackets so people can eliminate luggage completely. Granted it’s for a small demographic but its important when you absolutely can’t check luggage for whatever reason. These things have massive pockets allowing people to bring an enormous amount of stuff on to the plane. Probably one could even convert a raincoat for this. As soon as you’re on the plane you can put it in an overhead bin. You could also bring a stuff sack for it to fit into. This is truly packing on another level.

Another area that people rarely consider is traveling with a bicycle and the box it has to be packed in. Sure you have to pay for the box but there is often a LOT of space in that box and they don’t seem to care what it weighs so unless you’re transporting heavy stuff it can be utilized for a lot of items. This along with the luggage vest would be interesting. You can get bike boxes for free in most cities as bike stores just throw them out. Ideally it would be made out of lightweight plastic but that’s just more thing someone can steal. Though it could be used to protect the bike if you’re taking the bus/train within the country. Local transportation can be rough.

What Counts as a ‘Small Bag’ on Ryanair?

This post may contain affiliate links. If you click one, we may earn a commission at no cost to you.

This article explores the difference between what is a ‘small bag’ according to Ryanair rules, and how big of a bag you can actually get on a plane without paying extra.

Key Takeaways

  • Ryanair is more lax about the ‘small bag’ dimensions compared to the pre-pandemic period
  • Larger bags are ok as long as they don’t trigger a number or “red flags”
  • Consider travel hacks to never pay extra for luggage
  • Be ready to bin items or pay the luggage fee in case of zealous staff
  • Monitor Ryanair practice as it might become more strict again

Ryanair Small Bag Policy

If you are a frugal traveler like us here at the Smart Travel Family, chances are you privately probaby travel with budget airlines like Ryanair and WizzAir. And – you, just like us, probably want to pay as little as possible for luggage on top of the airline ticket fee.

small travel bag for ryanair

The problem with Ryanair and similar budget airlines in comparison to “regular” airlines, is that if you have more than one flight leg you have to pay the luggage fees for each of the legs. This usually multiplies the initially low fare that probably attracted your attention to Ryanair in the first place on such flight aggregators like Momondo (our favorite), SkyScanner, Google Flights and similar.

How Big of a Bag Can You Actually Get on Board on a Ryanair Plane?

Ryanair ‘small bag’ rules.

Ryanair allows you to carry a small personal bag (40x20x25cm or 16 x 8 x 10 inches), which must fit under the seat in front of you. If you’re interested in volume, this is equal to 20 liters or 2880 cubic inches. To be honest, this is quite a small backpack that doesn’t fit a lot of stuff.

If you are flying with anything larger than that, in theory, you have to pay for at least cabin luggage. However, in practice you might be able to take on board a much larger bag if you follow some simple rules and travel hacks.

‘Small bag’ rule application in practice

The way Ryanair applies rules in practice changes over time , as many frequent budget travelers will attest. Ryanair staff at the gates were really zealous before the Covid pandemic, but appear to be much more lenient in the post-pandemic era, probably to keep travelers loyal and a bit more satisfied.

Knowing the current Ryanair practice, will allow you to take a larger backpack on-board rather than pay the additional ‘cabin luggage’ fee.

Most likely you will be able to take on board ‘cabin baggage’ size bag without paying the respective fee, if your bag:

  • Has no wheels. As soon as there are wheels, you’ll have to pay.
  • Is slightly under cabin luggage size .
  • Is the sole visible bag . Conceal any additional smaller bags within the larger one or under your clothes.
  • Is carried gracefully . Avoid giving the impression that the bag has something very heavy in it.

If you want to be more certain that you are not stopped at the gate and made to pay for oversize “small bag”, here are a few other travel hacks to consider.

Travel hack #1 – pack tight for the gate check, expand in the plane

Remember that Ryanair checks luggage only at the gate.

This means that you have to appear to have one tightly packed bag at this point in your journey. There is nothing that really stops you to put your belongings in two bags once you are in the plane for easier access. Similarly, it’s surprising, how many items you can pack put in your pockets while passing the gate check.

We almost always take along a collapsible travel bag when flying Ryanair.

Travel hack #2 – all travelers are entitled to a small backpack, even children

small travel bag for ryanair

If you are travelling with children, chances are you can pay for very few or even no cabin luggage or checkin bags. This is because every traveller – even children – is entitled to their own free backpack, irrespective of who is carrying the bacpack (usually one of the parents). Most kids’ private stuff doesn’t take as much volume as that of adults, hence you can pack lots of common family stuff in the kids’ backpacks.

Travel hack #3 – small backpack for your laptop

If you travel with a laptop or other sensitive electronics, these might not let you pack your bag very tightly and force you to pay for extra luggage. Unless you do something about it.

Our solution has been to get a small thin backpack (like in the image above) just for the laptop and/or tablet. You can wear it under your coat. This allows you to really pack your backpack to the brim, and still avoid the luggage fees. Sadly, this tip will not work in summer or countries with warmer climates.

Travel hack #4 – god-level packing hack

While we haven’t tried this ourselves, seasoned hardcore budget travellers get special vests with a gazillion pockets just to get past the gate. After that they just stove the vest under the seat or the overhead lockers and enjoy their flight.

They do not have to pay for the vest because it counts not as a bag, but an item of wardrobe.

We advise against buying any of the bags advertised on Amazon and elsewhere that promise 100% compliance with Ryanair and WizzAir rules. Particularly, if its in the sub 50 EUR range. There are two reasions for this.

Firstly, the bags are usually of really poor quality. For the one we bought, a strap was loose upon receiving it and fell off after a single instance of use. Fortunatelly, we could return it for a full refund.

Secondly, it really doesn’t make sense to stick with the 20 liter volume if the policy is not enforced, and you can easily smuggle at leaste a 30 liter bag onboard.

If you want to be really cautious, consider using any good quality sub-30-liter backpack that will not fall apart after a few weeks. Kristaps is a big fan of his Mammut Nirvana 30l bag, and has never had problems with any of the budget airlines. It has superb zippers and its back can be fully opened for easy packing.

small travel bag for ryanair

What’s the worst that can happen?

Always be ready for a particularly zealous gate guardian.

While the tips above work in majority of cases, if you want to be a person that uses travel hacks, there are risks involved. If gate staff ask you to pay for luggage that appears to be oversize, you have to be ready to either pay the 60-70 EUR fee… or you can discard some of your items in the nearby bin.

This is why when we employ the travel hack described in this article, we pack the least valuable items where they can be easily accessed so that we can quickly evaluate if we want to throw them away (which has never happened in practice).

If you have a particularly large backpack and there’s a real risk of you being stopped because of it, probably don’t board last so you have time to evaluate which belongings to discard and not have to pay.

Have something to share?

If you notice a change in the practice and a tendency to once again apply the rules strictly, please drop a comment below.

The 10 Best Carry-Ons To Take on Ryanair and Other Budget Airlines

author image

See recent posts by Kyle Valenta

If you’ve ever flown Ryanair, easyJet, Southwest, Spirit, or any other budget airlines, you know that size  really  matters when it comes to your carry-on luggage. Each airline has strict size requirements for carry-on bags—and airline staff will absolutely measure your bag if it looks just a hair too big. If it is oversized, you have two options: Put on as many articles of clothing as you can to make your bag shrink, or check it for a hefty sum. You can avoid all that—and keep your flight as cheap as possible—by planning ahead and making sure that your carry-on is the right size before you fly. To make that process a little easier, we’ve rounded up 10 pieces of carry-on luggage that are within the smallest carry-on size requirements for a variety of popular budget airlines. Read on for our favorites.

The Best Carry-On Luggage for Ryanair Non-Premium Passengers and Spirit Airlines:

Ryanair and Spirit Airlines are notoriously strict about their carry-on policies. If you’re flying on Ryanair’s cheapest tickets — which are it’s non-premium fares—you are limited to one small carry-on bag. Yes, you read that correctly. We’re talking one bag that’s about the same dimensions as a regular backpack. While that’s a tough amount of space to work with, it can be done. Spirit Airlines is the most restrictive U.S. airline when it comes to carry-on baggage allowances. At the time of writing, Spirit only allowed about eight liters of space more than Ryanair. With that in mind, the same bags in this section should be considered your go-to when traveling on Spirit as well. We’ve picked a few great carry-on bags that can help you maximize space, plus one must-have accessory if you’re planning on traveling out of a no-fee-sized backpack.

1. Sea-to-Summit Compression Bags

Yellow and green options of the 1. Sea-to-Summit Compression Bags

If you’re going to pack for any trip on Ryanair’s non-premium tickets or on Spirit Airlines, you will absolutely need to maximize your packing space. With that in mind, grab Sea-to-Summit’s easy-to-use compression bags, which come in an array of space-saving sizes. Unlike vacuum-style compression bags, these roll shut and buckle closed, compressing soft items (like clothing) down to a third of their original size.

2. Thule Accent Backpack, 20L

Thule makes great, hardy gear for travelers and commuters on the go. This roomy bag has a spacious main compartment that’s perfect for your compression bags, as well as a laptop pocket, side pockets for water bottles, and smaller pockets for odds and ends (eliminating the need for bulky toiletry bags or dopp kits).

3. Osprey Daylite Plus Daypack

Two views of the Osprey Daylite Plus Daypack

If you’re after a more lightweight backpack option, the roughly 1.3 pound Osprey Daypack should be your pick. Again, it has a generously sized main compartment and is made from flexible material, making it ideal to use with compression bags or packing cubes. It also has handy side sleeves for water bottles to avoid purchasing water in-air, keeping you hydrated on the cheap.

4. Herschel Supply Co. Thompson Backpack

With its rolltop-inspired design, the Herschel Thompson Backpack gives you a ton of main compartment space and a buckle enclosure that will help you maximize your packing. Compression bags will come in handy here to keep that main compartment organized. The backpack comes in an array of neutral colors, making it a great bag for city exploring when you’re back on the ground.

5. Fjallraven Kanken Classic Pack

Two views of the Fjallraven Kanken Classic Pack in yellow

The iconic Fjallraven Kanken backpack is a perfect choice for those who prefer a more hipster-ready look. It comes in dozens of colors, too, so you can pick the one that best suits you. It’s tiny, yes, but if you’re only gone for a day or two (and pack sparingly), you’ll do ok. You’ll also look cute carrying this around any city as a daypack!

Carry-On Luggage for easyJet, Southwest and Other Budget Airlines

Other budget airlines are a bit less restrictive—including Southwest, easyJet, and JetBlue, though you should always check rules about carry-on baggage, as they vary from airline to airline. While most budget airlines will allow you one reasonably sized piece of cabin luggage, you will be subject to often stringent weight requirements, so make sure you’re not overpacking. The below options range from larger backpack style carry-on bags to more traditional hard-shell suitcases. However, always check the requirements for your specific budget carrier, as certain airlines are more restrictive than others.

1. Cabin Max Oxford Carry On Luggage – Backpack

Two views of the Cabin Max Oxford Carry On Luggage – Backpack

The brand Cabin Max is dedicated to creating bags that fit the carry-on size restrictions of budget airlines around the world, so it’s a great idea to head to it for your budget-flight luggage needs. We’re partial to the Oxford backpack, which is the exact size that Southwest permits as a carry-on. It opens like a suitcase, making packing and unpacking a breeze. Is its rectangular shape a little awkward? Sure. But it maximizes space extremely well.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Carry-On & Personal Item Size? (2023)

Maybe you have your first Ryanair trip coming up, and you might wonder about how strict the airline is about carry-on and personal item size.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Carry-On & Personal Item Size?

Let me fill you in on some of Ryanair’s current rules and policies and then I’ll answer common questions I hear about them.

If you want to skip the article and grab a bag that will work on Ryanair Airlines, check out these two!

This great carry-on bag  is for travelers that want to get the best value out of their luggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag  could be the last carry-on bag you ever purchase!

Let’s dive in!

Table of Contents

How Strict is Ryanair With Its Carry-on Baggage Policy?

Ryanair is considered to be very strict among travelers regarding its carry-on item policies, and they maintain that if you are allowed only a small personal bag onboard, you’ll need to make sure it falls within size dimensions of 15” l x 9” w x 7” h (40cm x 25cm x 20cm). Your bag must fit in Ryanair’s sizer and so it can be easily stored underneath the seat in front of you. Ryanair recommends carefully measuring your carry-on and personal items before traveling. Additional carry-on bag purchases are available, starting at €6 (just over $6 USD).

Ryanair’s Carry-on Item Policy

Including handles and wheels, your personal bag measurements on Ryanair flights should not exceed:

15” l x 9” w x 7” h (40 x 25 x 20 cm), or 31 total linear inches/85 linear cm (l + w + h).

*According to Ryanair’s website:

“ Priority & 2 Cabin Bags [options] give [you] the benefit of boarding the plane via the Priority Queue and carrying [your] small personal bag (15” x 9”x 7” / 40x20x25cm) and 22lb/10kg wheelie bag (21” x 15” x 7” / 55x40x20cm) with [you] on board. This will mean you won’t need to wait for your bag at the terminal at the destination. If Priority is sold out, you can purchase our 22 lb/10kg Check-in Bag .”

Note that paying for your bags online ahead of time tends to be less expensive and can help you avoid paying checked bag fees at the airport or at your gate.

Take some proactive steps beforehand and invest in some Ryanair-compliant carry-on luggage, so that you can travel and relax.

How Can I Measure My Carry-on Bag to Make Sure It Fits on a Ryanair Flight?

To help you verify your baggage conforms with Ryanair’s cabin bag size restrictions, the carrier recommends taking note of bag sizers at airport locations that feature its required 15″ x 9″ x 7″ dimensions.

It’s also a good idea to measure your personal bag before you leave for the airport to ensure that your entire bag, along with the wheels and handles, falls within Ryanair’s carry-on size requirements.

It’s important to remember that the three dimensional measurements together – length + height + width – cannot add up to more than 31 linear inches/85 linear cm. If you happen to be traveling with a soft-sided or expandable suitcase, you may want to measure your bag after it’s packed to ensure it still complies.

My Ryanair-compliant Luggage Recommendations

Need some suggestions for carry-on luggage that I would recommend for flying with Ryanair? I personally recommend the following Ryanair-compliant carry-on bags because of the carrier’s strictness with its luggage policies.

This is a great carry-on bag if you’re looking for long-lasting value out of your travel baggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag is one you’ll love (I know I love it!), and it just might end up being the last carry-on bag you’ll ever purchase.

Ryanair’s Carry-on Baggage Allowance

What is Ryanair’s carry-on baggage allowance? All Ryanair passengers are allowed a free carry-on item (personal bag) that needs to fit under the seat in front of them. Additional carry-on bags are available for an upcharge.

Items that don’t fit into a sizing device or which are considered to be oversized will need to be checked, with gate-checked baggage fees assessed accordingly . Gate-checked bag fees are €/£ 69.99/~$70 USD per.

You can see all the details regarding Ryanair’s checked bag policies here .

Bringing Carry-on Liquid Items Onto Ryanair Flights

You are allowed to bring liquid items onboard Ryanair flights in your carry-on baggage as long as they pass through security checkpoints. Items in violation of regulations will be confiscated.

Toiletries and items in the form of liquids, gels, and aerosols in containers of 3.4 fl. Oz. (100 ml/100g) or less must be packed neatly in a clear, resealable one-quart (1 liter) plastic bag, no more than 7.8 in x 7.8 in (20 cm x 20 cm) in size. Try these Ziploc one-quart baggies . One plastic bag per passenger and you must be able to completely close your plastic bag and be able to fit it into your hand baggage; your bag of liquids must be taken out of your hand baggage to be screened separately.

Duty-free liquids, aerosols, and gels of more than 3.4 oz. /  100 ml are allowed to be brought on board Ryanair flights, as long as they are contained in a duty-free issued Secure Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB).

You’ll find plenty more information here on our TravelontheFly site about what items you are and aren’t allowed to bring on a plane with you.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Your Carry-on Size?

You shouldn’t have any problems at all as long as your item(s) fit in the sizer at the airport or underneath the seat in front of you.

To make your flight as worry-free as possible, I suggest complying with Ryanair’s policies. For more room in your carry-on bag, if you need a new carry-on bag that will fit Ryanair’s (and other carriers’) guidelines, get this bag and don’t have to worry about it ever again.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Your Carry-on Item’s Weight?

Most airlines are not concerned with carry-on/personal item weight, though Ryanair offers two paid options for carry-on bags (10 kg and 20 kg, starting at €/£ 12.99/~$13 USD per). Ryanair is more concerned with spaces in the cabin where carry-on items should be able to be stowed comfortably. Meeting the size dimensions of your personal bag and carry-on items mentioned above should cover all your bases.

Should I Risk Flying on Ryanair With an Oversized Carry-on Item?

Should you risk flying on Ryanair with an oversized carry-on bag? I say, “Why take the chance?” Most frequent flyers would probably agree with me. Do you like paying extra fees?

If your bag is slightly larger than Ryanair’s specified size dimensions, you’ll likely be OK. Worst-case scenario if your carry-on is too large, is that you will have to check your bag at the gate and be charged ~$70 USD for checking an oversized bag at the gate. PRO TIP – You have a better chance of getting away with a slightly larger piece of luggage if your carry-on is soft-sided. That‘s why I have highlighted and pointed you toward soft-sided bags like this one here . They are a little easier to squeeze into tight spots, including into the overhead bins on a plane!

Ryanair Checked Baggage Fees

Ryanair allows each passenger to purchase a 22 lb (10 kg) bag and/or up to three 44 lb (20 kg) checked bags per flight.

I travel with a bag that is slightly larger than many airline regulations and I have never been asked to check it. I can’t guarantee that you won’t be asked to.

Your best bet is to travel with baggage that is within Ryanair’s size regulations, and then you will never have to worry about it!

You can read more about Ryanair’s checked bag policies here , as you’re preparing for a specific upcoming flight.

Where Can I Find a Quality Travel Bag That’s Within Ryanair’s Carry-on Item Limitations?

I highly recommend this great carry-on bag that is an incredible value for the cost.

And this Travel Pro bag is an excellent choice for even the most particular travelers.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Its “One Personal Bag” Policy?

How strict is Ryanair regarding its “one personal bag” policy? Ryanair is considered to be quite strict in regard to item sizes and weights for its passengers. One small personal bag is allowed per passenger (e.g., purse, handbag, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack, and medically necessary items). Technically speaking, Ryanair expects personal items to be 15” l x 9” w x 7” h (40 cm x 25 cm x 20 cm) or less in size, but as long as your personal bag can easily be carried and stored underneath the sizer or underneath the seat in front of you, Ryanair representatives probably won’t ask you about it.

Ryanair’s Personal Bag Policy

What about Ryanair’s official personal bag policy? Your personal item ( e.g., purse, shoulder bag, backpack, diaper bag, etc.) must fit under the seat in front of you, and dimensions should not exceed 15” l x 9” w x 7” h (40 cm x 25 cm x 20 cm) .

Carrying Additional Items Onto Ryanair Flights

In addition to your personal bag and paid carry-on bags onboard Ryanair flights, you are also allowed to bring small items, such as a jacket/sweatshirt, blanket, umbrella, book, strollers*, car seats, diaper bags, duty-free items, a reasonably sized stuffed animal , food/drink purchased past the security checkpoint, crutches, strollers, camera, etc. These won’t count as personal items, unless they’re larger things that take up space overhead or underneath a seat, like purses, shoulder bags, backpacks, briefcases, large camera cases, etc.

Is the First Checked Bag Free on Ryanair Flights?

Your first checked bag is NOT free on Ryanair flights, but each passenger can check in up to 3 checked bags weighing 44 lbs (20 kg) each. According to Ryanair’s website:

“Adding the 20kg Check-in Bag costs between €/£ 20.99 (~$21 USD) and €/£ 59.99 (~$60 USD) depending on the route and travel date selected. The pricing for the Excess baggage is €/£9 ($9 USD) per each added kilogram (2.2 lbs), if purchased online during check-in 2 hours before departure.  *Higher bag fees apply when checked bags are purchased via a Ryanair call center, at airport ticket desks, during peak periods and on selected routes.”

Ryanair DAC is a Dublin-based Irish airline founded in 1984. Its primary operational bases are at Dublin airport and London Stansted airport. The carrier, known for its low airfares, operates throughout a network that spans Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa.

So, How Strict is Ryanair About Carry-on and Personal Items?

Ryanair passengers are allowed to take one personal bag on board for free, and Ryanair is considered among the stricter airlines in regard to carry-on item size. Additional carry-on items may be purchased. Your free personal bag needs to fit underneath the seat in front of you.

Invest in carry-on baggage that complies with Ryanair’s 15” x 9” x 7” size requirements, like this one .

In case you choose to take a risk by bringing a larger bag onto a Ryanair flight, be sure to at least use a soft-sided bag so you’ll be able to better navigate it into a tight space. If your carry-on or personal item is deemed to be “oversized,” you’ll likely be charged a gate bag check-in fee of $70 per.

Travel hack – How to pack Ryanair (aka tiny) hand luggage only

small travel bag for ryanair

In the interests of a challenge I packed a Ryanair carry on bag for a three day break according to the new 45cm x 25cm x 20cm regulations.  And I am here to tell you – it can be done.

So yep, there is a little bit of compromising and a lot of smart thinking to be done but you know what?  I had everything I needed in that tiny bag.  So first up, let’s take a look at what went in…

  • 1 x wrap blouse – this works alone with jeans or shorts but equally well layered over a dress for a different look
  • 1 x midi dress – this could be worn day or night
  • 2 x swimwear – perhaps one is enough but I like to have variety for the tan line variation at least
  • 2 x tank/vest tops – to work with shorts or jeans
  • 1 x shorts – easy to pull on during the day
  • 1 x jeans – just in case it turns out cooler in the evenings than you hoped
  • 1 x maxi dress – ideally choose a dress that works by the pool but also in the evening
  • 1 x pair flat sandals – make sure these are neutral and, most importantly, comfy
  • 3 x undies – if you follow my Five Star Holidaying on a Budget tips you should have no need for pyjamas as all good hotels provide robes and slippers

And then to travel you want something super comfy but that can easily double as one of your looks during the trip.  I opted for…

  • 1 x jacket – I have been living in  this cropped denim number * all summer and it goes with  everything
  • 1 x scarf – I always ALWAYS wear a big, lightweight scarf because they have sooo many uses (keep you comfy and cosy on the flight, act as an extra layer in the evening, can be a cover up in the sun, even a towel on the beach – just take one)
  • 1 x jumpsuit – this loose tan number is an old time fav of mine but they have re-released it this season * again in a new fabric
  • 1 x sneakers OR wedges – chances are you have a fair idea before you travel which of these will be more useful to you but sadly both take up precious real estate in the packing dept. so just wear them
  • 1 x makeup bag
  • 1 x toiletries bag – this 100ml all day long suncream * was a new discovery for me
  • 1 x mini bag – filled with passport, purse, phone plus charger and neutral to match your palette for evenings
  • 1 x book – call me old fashioned but I like a real paperback for round the pool
  • 1 x pair of sunglasses
  • 1 x beach bag – a string or canvas option is your best bet here because they take up next to no space but hold everything
  • 1 x hairbrush
  • 1 x pair straighteners – if, like me, you must
  • 1 x plug adapter – although worth checking if your hotel offer these in the rooms

As far as jewellery goes I wear it all for travel; not only does this save any of it getting knotted or damaged, it saves on space.  The lady in the plane seat next to me commented how much she loved all my layered pieces…  she then went on to tell me that her daughter usually refers to her as Mr T  so I guess she also falls into the ‘more is more’ camp.

The key thing to bear in mind when selecting your options is versatility.  I like to opt for a neutral colour palette of black, white and tan but you might be just as happy in a rainbow of clashing colours – as long as you can wear each piece more than one way then you will not be stuck I assure you.

When it comes to packing you want to start with the bulky items like shoes, straighteners, the book and beach bag and then follow up with the clothes.  Now it is time to rock and ROLL.  Seriously, roll.  Roll like your life depends on it.  You will be  amazed at how much space this saves. And finally finish the top layer with all the things you might need during travel – the mini bag filled with the purse and phone, the sunglasses and the toiletries prepped for security because, trust me, nobody wants to be that guy whose clear bag full of liquids lurks somewhere in the depths of their precision packed case.

I almost feel like I should add a disclaimer here because, in truth, Carrie and I wound up booking a carry on case to share, largely due to her fear of me packing no pyjamas.  This allowed me to bring along the aforementioned and apparently crucial pyjamas, this entirely space hungry fringed raffia evening bag * (obsessed), plus an extra outfit which, you guessed it, did not get worn…

Ryanair aircraft - know their baggage policy

Budget air travel in Europe opens a whole world of opportunities. But with so many hidden costs, your trip can end up being way more expensive than expected. Make sure you don’t get caught out with our complete guide to Ryanair’s baggage policy.

Key Takeaway With Ryanair, you can bring one cabin bag no larger than 40 x 20 x 25 cm (15.75 x 7.87 x 9.84 inches) . Priority customers can take an additional 10 kg (22 lbs) to go in the overhead locker. You can also pay to check a 10 kg (22 lbs) or 20 kg (44 lbs) bag . Prices vary for different flight routes.

Ready to unpack Ryanair’s baggage policy? Keep reading to find out everything you need to know for a low-turbulence airport experience, including what you can take on board, what you can check, and what costs extra.

Ryanair’s basic fare

The basic ticket for Ryanair is your most budget-friendly option. All passengers with Ryanair are entitled to bring one small bag onboard with them . The airline is known for being strict with bags that don’t meet their policies, so you’ll want to follow their guidelines as closely as possible to avoid any extra charges. Within reason, any duty-free items don’t contribute towards your cabin baggage allowance.

Your bag must be smaller than 40 x 20 x 25 cm (15.75 x 7.87 x 9.84 inches) and you must be able to fit it under the seat in front of you. There are no specifications on the weight limit, so in theory, you could pack as much as you want. Just be mindful that you’ll have to carry your heavy bag around the airport until you board.

If you’re traveling with a baby, you can take up to two pieces of baby equipment per child, including one stroller and a choice of a booster seat, car seat, or travel cot. Lap infants are allowed a 5 kg (11 lbs) baby bag, as long as it isn’t bigger than 45 x 35 x 20 cm (17.72 x 13.78 x 7.87 inches).

Ryanair priority boarding

You could also purchase a Ryanair priority ticket. You’ll get to join the priority boarding queue at the gate and take an additional 10 kg (22 lbs) cabin bag. It can’t measure more than 55 x 40 x 20 cm (21.65 x 15.75 x 7.87 inches) and must be able to fit in the overhead locker.

You can purchase priority boarding when you book your flight. This costs between €6-36 depending on your route and travel dates. If you want to add priority boarding after your booking or at the airport, it could cost anywhere between €20-38.

If you’re only taking hand luggage and tend to pack a heavy washbag, you’ll need to keep in mind current EU Security Requirements. This can vary depending on your departure airport and, thanks to new scanning technology , some airports no longer require a maximum liquid policy. You should always check the specific requirements for the airports you’ll be flying from.

The general guidance from Ryanair is that no liquid container can be larger than 100 ml (3.38 oz) . All your liquids should fit into a clear, resealable plastic bag no larger than 20 x 20 cm (7.87 x 7.87 inches), with a capacity of up to 1 liter (33.8 oz). You must have your bag separate from your hand luggage for screening and you should be able to seal it when it’s full.

If you’re traveling with a baby or have a medical condition that requires liquid medicine, you can bring on as much medicine, baby milk, powdered milk, sterilized water, and baby food as you like. It doesn’t need to be in a clear plastic bag, but you should have it ready for inspection.

Other airport security considerations

The items you can bring on board and the items you can put in checked luggage vary by airport and airline. If you put the wrong item in the wrong bag, you could be denied boarding or asked to abandon your item. Ryanair has a full list of prohibited items on their website.

Putting cabin baggage in the hold

If your bag doesn’t meet Ryanair’s requirements, they may ask you to check your bag and pay the necessary charges. On very busy flights, Ryanair may not have space on the aircraft for everyone’s bags. If this happens and you’ve purchased bags to go in the overhead lockers, they may ask you to check it in the hold instead. In either of these situations, you’ll need to pick up your bag from baggage reclaim before going through customs.

Ryanair’s checked luggage fee

Want to pack more for your vacation? You could also consider checking a bag. A 10 kg (22 lbs) checked bag could cost between €11.99-29.99 at the time of booking and €23.99-35.99 after booking or at the airport. A 20 kg (44 lbs) bag costs between €18.99-29.99 at the time of booking and €44.99-59.99 after booking or at the airport. You can buy up to three 20 kg bags per booking.

Overweight and Oversize Policy

If you’ve purchased checked luggage, you must drop it off at the check-in desk before security. Ryanair charges €9 per kilo (2.2 lbs) for excess baggage if you purchase it online up to two hours before departure. It costs €11 per kilo (2.2 lbs) to pay for excess baggage at the airport, so make sure you weigh all your luggage in advance.

Your bag shouldn’t be larger than 80 x 120 x 120 cm (31.5 x 47.2 x 47.2 inches) . Ryanair doesn’t state a specific policy on charges for items larger than this, so we recommend confirming ahead of time to avoid last-minute problems and fees at the airport.

If you bring oversized sports equipment such as golf clubs, read more details in our guide to Ryanair’s golf club policy .

Connecting flights

Ryanair offers a very limited number of connecting flights, so any layovers will likely be self-transfers. This means you’ll need to allow enough time to go through immigration, collect any checked bags, recheck them, go back through security, and make it to your gate.

With self-transfer flights, it’s often difficult to make a claim if a delayed flight or tight connection causes you to miss your next flight. Unless you have a long layover, we highly recommend you try to only take hand luggage on a self-transfer flight.

Ryanair’s policy on lost or damaged luggage

With thousands of passengers transiting through airports every day, even the most efficient systems can go wrong. Your luggage getting damaged or not making your final destination is a risk you should always consider when checking bags. We always recommend including your luggage contents in your travel insurance policy.

If your bags are lost or damaged after a flight with Ryanair , you need to go to the lost property desk on arrival and ask for a unique reference number. This is essential to tracking your bags and making any claims. It takes up to 15 working days for Ryanair to process a claim, and there are processes to escalate any issues you have with your claim assessment. For more information, you can also check our guide on what to do if your baggage is delayed .

15 Packing Tricks You Need to Know Now

Let’s avoid this look at all costs. Nobody wants to go to these extremes to meet their baggage allowance…

Packing tips do's and don'ts

If you want to travel light, a little bit of organisation goes a long way. Check out these 15 packing dos and don’ts and look forward to less hassle the next time you fly:

Do  make a list of everything you’re planning to pack so you can easily see what you have, what you still need to get before you go and what you can buy at your destination

Don’t  take your entire shoe collection. Limit yourself to three pairs of shoes and wear the heaviest pair to the airport.

Do  pack your shoes first, lining the sides of your case. Stuff your shoes with socks and smaller items of clothing, gadgets or jewellery. This will also prevent your shoes from losing their shape.

Don’t  get footprints or other marks on your clothes – place your shoes inside a cloth/plastic bag before packing them. The free disposable shower caps provided at hotels are also perfect for separating your shoes from all the other items in your luggage.

Do  pack your heaviest items (e.g. shoes, jeans) in the bottom of your wheelie suitcase. You’ll find it’s much easier to roll as the weight will be more evenly distributed.

Don’t  waste unused space – roll your clothes instead of folding. They’ll wrinkle less and you’ll have much more room in your luggage to fit in any extras you pick up while you’re away.

Do  make it easier to spot your checked-in luggage on the carousel, especially if your luggage is black, navy or grey (like 99.9% of the population). Add a colourful luggage tag or ribbon to the handle so that there’s no confusion on arrival.

Don’t  keep all your packing space to yourself, especially if you’re travelling as a couple. Split your clothes between two pieces of luggage in case one of them gets lost in transit.

Do  make a copy of your passport, driving licence and/or ID card and email them to yourself. It’s also a good idea to take photos of these and save them to the camera on your phone in case you don’t have internet access when you get to your destination.

Don’t  let make-up or sunscreen leak inside your luggage and ruin your clothing. Secure the lids with clear tape or place a layer of cling-film between the lid and the bottle.

Do  place essentials (pjs, toothbrush, toothpaste) at the top of your bag if you’re landing at night so you don’t have the hassle of unpacking everything when you arrive at your destination.

Don’t  pack a rucksack in a rush. A little bit of forward planning will definitely pay off. Place heavy items in the middle of your rucksack, or as close to your back as possible – this will put less strain on your back when you’re walking. Follow the golden rule of rolling your clothes rather than folding. Not only will this give you more room, but you’ll also find that your clothes are less creased. At check-in, tie all rucksack straps together neatly to prevent them from getting tangled in the carousel when you land.

Do  pack a lightweight, foldable bag inside your carry-on luggage.  If you’re asked to hand over your carry-on luggage to check-in crew at the last minute because the overhead lockers are full, you’ll have somewhere to stash your phone, e-reader, money, snacks and any other valuables you can’t live without during the flight. This small bag can then be placed under the seat in front of you.

Don’t  forget your travel adaptor if you’re flying to European countries with different electrical sockets than at home.

Do check out our best ever luggage offers , exclusive to Ryanair customers!

Bonus Tip: If you forget the adaptor plug for your phone, check the side or back of the TV at your accommodation for a USB port.  You should be able to plug your USB cable in and charge your phone from there.

Passenger with a backpack boarding a Ryanair plane

Ryanair's new hand luggage rules – and the bags to beat them

As the new policy comes into effect, here’s what passengers need to know, plus five carry-ons that will make the journey

R yanair is introducing yet another baggage policy , just months after the last one flopped because it caused plane turnaround times to stall, as wheelie bags piled up on the tarmac. The new rules are tougher and mean passengers will have to pay at least an extra £12 return unless their bag can be pushed under the seat in front. So here is our guide to what the new rules are and the sort of bags that should – with a push and a shove – meet Ryanair’s latest demands.

What was the previous baggage policy?

All customers could bring on board one standard-sized wheelie bag plus a small carry-on free of charge. But unless passengers had bought priority boarding (£6), the wheelie bag is tagged at the gate and put in the hold. Most travellers have been happy with this, but it has meant that as many as 120 bags have been left waiting on the tarmac to be loaded onto the plane. This has caused significant delays, with ground staff often not immediately available to load them.

What is the new rule?

From 1 November, passengers who have not bought priority boarding will only be able to bring on board a small carry-on bag, not a wheelie. Instead, the latter will have to be checked in at the airport for £8 (if purchased at booking) or £10. That means customers will have to suffer the hassle of queuing at the Ryanair check-in desks in the airport before going through security. But it does mean they will not have to worry so much about liquids being less than 100ml and it will speed up security screening.

Should I buy priority boarding?

Yes, if you are keen to take a wheelie bag (10kg maximum) with you. Priority-boarding customers will still be able to take on two free bags (one small carry-on plus 1 wheelie bag). Priority boarding costs £6 each way. Importantly, Ryanair will only allow a maximum of 95 (out of 189 potential passengers per plane) to buy priority boarding. Once this is sold out, customers will have to check their bag in before security, at a cost of £16-£20 return. The airline is hoping that many more travellers will opt for the priority option when they purchase their flight.

What if I turn up with a wheelie bag at the gate without priority boarding?

The airline will not let you board with the wheelie bag and you will have to pay £20-£25 at the gate to have it tagged and put in the hold.

Tell us: are you affected by the new Ryanair luggage policy?

If you are travelling with Ryanair and have been affected we would like to hear from you.

You can get in touch by filling in this encrypted form or contact the via WhatsApp by adding the contact +44(0)7867825056

Your responses will only be seen by the Guardian and we’ll be in touch if we are considering your response as part of our reporting. You can read terms of service  here .

What is the biggest carry-on bag I can still take?

If you are determined not to pay extra, you can only bring a bag that can be tucked under the seat in front of you. Previously, Ryanair said that meant a bag with maximum dimensions of 35cm x 20cm x 20cm. But, from 1 November, this will increase to 40cm x 25cm x 20cm. An industry of Ryanair-approved small bags sprang up to meet the old baggage requirements and, no doubt, these are now being rapidly revised to meet the new standards.

I have a small rucksack just a little larger than that. Will I get away with it?

Some gate staff in the past were almost gleeful at rejecting oversized bags and it remains to be seen if those days will return. Airline employees are likely to be looking out for anything with wheels or hard sides, as these are unlikely to fit under seats. The key will be to make sure that your bag, if it is larger than the permitted dimensions, has soft sides and is not overpacked, so it can be squeezed under the seat.

Five carry-on bags that should make the cut

John Lewis Geneva Small Weekend Holdall

John Lewis Geneva small weekend holdall £65. Size: 40 x 21 x 20cm Not cheap, but an almost perfect fit for the new Ryanair size. It is an unstructured holdall with one main compartment and an internal zipped pocket, plus an adjustable shoulder strap. Reviewers on John Lewis’s website say it is relatively heavy, but durable, and big enough as an overnighter.

Art Disco Arrow Emblem backpack £28. Size: 42 x 31 x 21cm This is a few centimetres too wide, but don’t overstuff it and you should be OK. Art Disco is a Yorkshire-based designer that promises “hand-craft small batches of truly unique pieces”. The 18-litre bag comes with a zipped front pocket and padded shoulder strap.

Zara bowling bag

Zara bowling bag £49.99. Size: 44 x 30 x 24cm This is definitely stretching it but, if you can get away with it, there is enough space in it for a weekend trip. The bag, which has two compartments, comes with a shoulder strap.

Berghaus TwentyFourSeven rucksack £18.11. Size 44 x 25 x 21cm The TwentyFourSeven rucksack range comes in various sizes, with only the smallest, the 15 litre, within Ryanair’s rules. It is sold for £30 on the Berghaus website, but a near-identical model is less on Amazon.

Aerolite cabin holdall

Aerolite cabin holdall £6.99. Size 35 x 20 x 20cm This one will definitely fit Ryanair’s under-seat size, as it was designed to fit the old, slightly smaller dimensions. It has a top carry handle, as well as a shoulder strap, though several reviews on Amazon claim the quality is questionable.

Fjällräven Greenland Zip large backpack £105. Size: 40 x 28 x 18cm This should just swing it past Ryanair, but maybe not your bank manager. Sweden’s Fjällräven has become a popular brand, known for its quality, but at a hefty price tag. Made from waxed fabric, the Greenland backpack has a 23-litre capacity and an inside zippered pocket for keys.

CABIN BAG SIZES FOR RYANAIR

The latest changes in Ryanair’s bag policy were not well received by consumers, especially as they came soon after the previous changes which were much less restrictive. There are currently four baggage options to consider when you plan your trip. Two of them authorise you to bring your baggage into the cabin and the other two are for putting your baggage in the hold. Let’s have a look:

RYANAIR BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE 2023 – ON BOARD OPTIONS:

  • WITHOUT PRIORITY (FREE OF CHARGE FOR EVERYBODY): 1 SMALL PERSONAL BAG, no bigger than 20x25x40 cm (8x10x16 inches)
  • WITH PRIORITY (STARTING FROM £/€6): 1 CARRY-ON BAG : a bag no bigger than 20x40x55 cm (8x16x21 inches) including handles and wheels, and no heavier than 10 kg. PLUS 1 SMALL PERSONAL BAG, (size 20x25x40 cm / 8x10x16 inches) from point 1. They call this option priority because you can join the priority queue if you choose this option.

RYANAIR BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE 2023 – CHECK-IN OPTIONS

  • CHECK-IN BAG – Starting from £/€ 12.99 : a bag no bigger than 20x40x55 cm (8x16x21 inches) including handles and wheels, and no heavier than 10kg
  • CHECK-IN BAG – Starting from €/£ 20.99 to €/£ 59.99 : a bag no bigger than 81x119x119cm and no heavier than 20 Kg (bag pooling is allowed, but a single bag can’t be heavier than 32 kg)

It is clear that if you do not plan your baggage well, you risk turning your flight from cheap and cheerful to expensive and miserable! Let’s have a look at the first two options which allow us to bring the baggage on board.

RYANAIR SMALL CABIN BAG FREE OF CHARGE

Ryanair small-bag-size

FROM RYANAIR’S BAG POLICY WEBPAGE All passenger fare types include a small personal bag, which must fit under the seat in front of you.

A bag that is no bigger than 20x25x40cm max (8x10x16 inches max) is the only baggage item you can carry for free on any Ryanair flight (as per 2023).

The only exceptions are:

  • Parents flying with a baby (8 days to 23 months) can carry an extra baby bag up to 5kg (dimensions: 45x35x20cms) plus some baby equipment like a travel cot or a travel stroller .
  • People that need to bring medical equipment can contact the special assistance team but should be able to bring on board some common items.

It is really important to be familiar with this rule because if you exceed this bag size, Ryanair could refuse your boarding or ask you to pay €/£50 at the boarding desk and put your bag on hold (I witnessed this many times).

The Ryanair personal item size 20x25x40cm could seem really little but I can assure you that if you pack well you can fit a lot in. At least there is no weight limit for this bag. We actually managed a week-long trip just using bags that fall into this category (more later). Consider that if you have a soft bag that is slightly larger than the Ryanair approved cabin bag size, you can probably use it as long you don’t over-pack it and so are able to squeeze it a bit to fit their measuring trolley.

COMPARISON CHART: THE BEST FREE OF CHARGE RYANAIR SMALL CABIN BAG (20x25x40 CM)

The chart below shows the best models you can buy: some of these options are great for those who fly Ryanair occasionally and prefer to spend as little as possible (like the Aerolite duffle bag), as they’re maybe not going to use it often. Others are light enough and offer great features that could be useful on any trip (like the Cabin Zero backpack).

In this list I selected only products that are maximising baggage size for Ryanair, you don’t want to lose even a few cm! In the list, there are a couple of options that are actually a little bigger than the Ryanair approved cabin bag dimension, but I included them as they are soft bags that, if not overpacked, can be squeezed. I added them to show a flexible option to use also on airlines with less restrictions.

Aerolite 40x20x25

small travel bag for ryanair

RYANAIR APPROVED CABIN BAG

This is a really clever and well-designed backpack at a great price. The structure is soft so you can maximise the space. You can carry it as a backpack, as a shoulder bag (removable strap included), or with one of the 2 padded handles.

It is a perfect backpack for people who like to divide small items and prefer to separate them into smaller compartments.

In some countries is available in different colours.

WARNING: In the US market they seem to still sell the previous version that is 3cm (1 inch) bigger than the max dimension on the longest side. This shouldn’t be a concern as it is a soft bag.

  • The main compartment opens fully in suitcase style
  • Practical straps to keep clothes and shoes in place, and a waterproof pocket for toiletries .
  • Two other zipped spaces, one perfect for a small tablet, and a front one for smaller possessions.
  • A small RFID compartment is a clever feature at the back.
  • There is a power bank pocket with a built-in USB port, and a side water bottle holder.
  • Backpack straps can be zipped inside the back when not in use.
  • Back sleeve to fit over trolley handles
  • Compartments are good to organise items but they also reduce available space.

CABIN ZERO CLASSIC 28L

small travel bag for ryanair

20×29.5×39 cm (8×11.6×15.3 inches) 600Gr (1.3 lb) 28L

This is probably the best Ryanair cabin bag if you only want to bring the free personal bag on board.

It is not at the top of the list only because on one side, it is a few cm larger than the Ryanair personal item size.

We have two of these backpacks and they are brilliant! They are superlight and the front opens entirely like a suitcase. These are for me the two key features to look for.

The compartment is not divided inside. As I’m always packing with cubes I found that having one big space is the best way to maximize the content. This is the perfect backpack for Ryanair! You can read a full review here: Cabin Zero review: the best backpack to save money on low-cost airlines .

They deliver worldwide. In many countries, Cabin Zero deliver for free if you spend more than a certain amount

  • One main compartment to maximise space available
  • Only 600 gr
  • Compression straps, padded shoulder straps, and zipped pocket outside.
  • Sleeve pocket inside for laptop or tablet.

20x25x40 cm 20L 450Gr (1lb)

Perfect, simple no fuss bag. It respects Ryanair free bag size and it has an amazing price.

One main compartment is best if you organise it with packing cubes, but the shape lends itself to easy loose packing, especially in winter with bigger clothes.

The main compartment can be locked and at the back, there is a sleeve to fix it on top of a suitcase in case you also travel with a bigger piece of luggage. If you need 2, they also have a great multibuy offer!

  • Great quality
  • 2 year guarantee

20x25x40 cm (8x10x16 inches) 20L 450gr (1 lb)

Aerolite did a great job of adapting their bags to the latest dimensions for Ryanair hand luggage. They produce a basic, no-fuss, but a great bag that fits the policy. Perfect if you travel with Ryanair occasionally and don’t want to spend much on a bag.

These bags don’t have anything inside to keep your clothes and items organised, the best option is to use them with packing cubes .

There now several colours available

  • One main compartment maximises the space, and a front zipped pocket.
  • The most recent model (red in the picture) opens from the top making access easier.

20x25x40 cm (8x10x16 inches) 19L 1.1Kg (2.4 lb)

This is one of the few wheeled trolleys that fit Ryanair’s cabin baggage size. It has been launched on the market recently, but everybody is already raving about it. It isn’t a top choice on this list because it is not yet widely available, but hopefully they will expand their reach soon. It is basic and cheap, fitting perfectly with the Ryanair concept, but does the job.

It has a soft structure that allows you to collapse it and store it away easily. A really great option if you don’t like to carry backpacks or shoulder bags.

The Cabin Max brand took the Ryanair topic really seriously and produced several backpacks that are in the bag size for the Ryanair limit. They are all really light 500g to 600g for 20L capacity. They are a good option, and once you arrive at your destination you can unpack and use them as a daily bag during activities/ excursions. They all offer 3 years guarantee. They differ little in style and functionality:

  • CABIN MAX UNDERSEAT BACKPACK is the first more feminine backpack they do. It is stylish but still offers some of the greatest features of the rest of the line. It has a suitcase-style opening at the front and a padded sleeve at the back for laptops up to 13″. On the inside front there are two big meshed pockets and one smaller zipped pocket is at the top for wallet, documents and more small items. On the side there is also a really useful, big bottle pocket!

RYANAIR PRIORITY CABIN BAG (20x40x55cm)

Ryanair priority bag

In this section, we are going to have a bit more choice. Ryanair cabin luggage size 2023 limits are tight but there are many more options available on the market. If you want to bring anything on board that is bigger than the Ryanair personal item size, you will have to pay. In case you already know that you are going to need a small carry-on bag I recommend you buy at the time of booking the “Priority and 2 cabin bags” option. Choosing to add a priority bag at the moment of buying the ticket usually starts from €6. If you add it later it will cost you at least double .

The two most important things to consider when looking at the size of hand luggage on Ryanair:

  • Max dimension: 20x40x55 cm (8x16x22 inches) . This dimension is usually the equivalent of a 40L bag. This starts to be a decent size bag and you will be able to choose your favourite type: trolley, backpack, or duffle bag and all their hybrid variations.
  • Max weight: 10 kg . Here is where you need to pay a bit of attention because it is really easy to pack more than 10kg in a 20x40x55 cm bag, and yes I’ve seen Ryanair weighing bags many times before the pandemic , but I’ve never seen them since. However, I would keep an eye on weight anyway. The first step to maximise the space available is to choose the lightest bag possible, which means you will be able to pack more.

Also here, I picked only bags that maximise Ryanair dimensions for hand luggage .

This is an amazing suitcase at a good price with great features, one of the best carry on luggage for Ryanair. We have had one of these for 6 years now and it still looks new.

It is light and easy to carry, but robust. The fact that it has a hard shell but is expandable makes it a perfect choice. Take advantage of more room when flying on other airlines but still comply with Ryanair baggage size.

All of this with an eye-catching design and many available colours!

5 Cities Cabin Trolley Backpack Hand Luggage, 55 cm, 42 Liters, Black

19X35X54 cm (7.5×13.8×21 inches) 42L 1.65kg (3.6 lb)

If you travel with Ryanair only occasionally then this trolley could be the ideal solution.

One of the cheapest on the market, and although the quality is not comparable to other trolleys on the list, it is still well made and offers interesting details.

The main compartment is not divided, but spacious. On the outside, there are two practical zipped areas and on the back there are shoulder straps to carry it as a backpack (which can be zipped away).

A small detail: when used as a backpack the wheels can be covered by folding a small back pocket on the bottom.

  • 2 Front pockets
  • Back straps to use it as a backpack
  • Wheel cover integrated
  • No resting front foot (when full it is difficult to keep it standing)
  • No TSA lock
  • No internal divider or clothes straps

CABIN MAX CABIN BAG

Travel Hack Cabin Case with Hand Bag Compartment

This cabin bag has an original feature. It has a main compartment you can access from the front of the bag and another smaller one at the top, plus a padded pocket on the back for a small laptop and a side bottle holder.

At first sight, the main compartment seems too small, but the top compartment is actually really handy. You can keep your liquids bag there to be faster and avoid unpacking while going through security, or bulky items such as your camera, that usually don’t fit in the front pockets. Inside there are clothes straps and two zipped pockets.

Cabin Max even offers 3 years manufacturer’s warranty.

This trolley is not only extremely resistant, with attention to detail and aesthetically stylish, but was also developed taking into consideration the modern requests of travellers and airlines.

The front pocket is recessed flush, allowing a clean line that does not exceed 20 cm. It offers space for a laptop plus organised pockets for phones, documents, and more. It can be opened completely or only on three sides to facilitate access to laptops and documents while on the go. The spacious interior is divided with a mesh panel to keep everything in order.

It is one of the few suitcases I found that manages to have the external laptop pocket and still keep the depth of 20cm., impressive!

  • Front opening is organised with different sleeves
  • 4 multi-directional wheels
  • recessed front pocket design maximises internal space

20x40x55 cm 8x16x22 Inches 37 L to 41 L 3kg (6.6 lb)

This is the perfect bag to use for a business trip or if your laptop doesn’t fit in the second personal bag. The front pocket makes it really easy to access your tech without opening the full bag.

This is the perfect affordable alternative to the Mandarina Duck option above.

There are not many hard-shell suitcases with these features that can fit into the Ryanair approved cabin bag category. Many of them are just 3 or 4cm too deep and being hardshell it’s becoming too risky as you can’t squeeze them to reduce the size if Ryanair wants to check it.

Being a hard shell suitcase your tech is also protected from bumps. A perfect carry-on especially for those who don’t often carry a second bag.

  • Practical front opening for up to 15.6″ laptop
  • Reinforced corners
  • The front opening is organised with different sleeves
  • The front pocket doesn’t lock with the TSA lock.

These three bags have all been designed to the maximum Ryanair cabin size dimensions and they all contain a huge 44L. The three hybrid backpacks are really similar. They all offer lots of space in the main compartment: the Manhattan model is the latest updated model for 2023 and the inside is well-organised with mesh pockets and straps. The last option is the most basic. These are extremely versatile bags with great telescopic handles to enable use as a 2-wheel trolley. Manhattan, again, offers the best design with pack-away backpack straps when not in use. The Greenwich model has a wheel cover to prevent dirt from getting on your clothes! Only Manhattan offers a padded area for laptops or tablets.

  • Pack away backpack straps (so they are not in the way or getting dirty when you pull it as a trolley) for the Manhattan model.

This is a perfect solution for those looking for something a little different with a more vintage look, but with some of the essential features that modern bags should have. It is a bit smaller than the hand luggage size on Ryanair, but it still holds 35L.

It is made from a robust canvas material with a front panel in artificial leather. This bag can age gracefully with a little wear and tear giving it that lived in look.

It can be carried as a backpack or with a shoulder strap (duffle style). It doesn’t open like a suitcase, so you will be better off organising your items with packing cubes , but it has lots of sleeves and pockets to keep smaller items within easy reach.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON RYANAIR APPROVED CABIN BAG CHOICE

How are you going to save money an example….

Being unaware of the policy could easily cost a couple, each arriving at the gate with a bag bigger than the Ryanair approved cabin bag, £/€ 100 (£/€ 50 each) plus another £/€ 48 minimum on the return journey to check in the bags (£/€ 23.99 each). £148 in total when with the right bag that could be, if not free, at least minimised to £/€ 24.

The price to add luggage changes based on the itinerary and dates . Lets make a real example with a route I am very familiar with: London-Rome. At the moment I have a one way ticket in my account from Rome to London for 4 people (2 adults and 2 kids) that cost €109.36 . This ticket only includes a personal bag each. A few years ago I would have brought 2 check in luggage for the 4 of us. Today that would cost me ~€90 (€ 44.99 each bag ), that is almost as much as the ticket itself! Instead, we will have 4 personal bags (free of charge) and if needed, a few days before boarding I will pay €20 for a priority cabin bag, Net saving € 70!

Is the free personal bag the only luggage you are going to carry with you?

  • If yes, then you can choose the bag that really best suits your style. The mini trolleys , even if basic, are in general a good option, but remember that space in the outside pockets is limited to smaller items. Most of the time when you need something you will need to fully open the trolley. If you go for the backpack you have more choice in terms of models and you can pick the one with the right features for you.

Are you going to pay to bring on-board a bigger cabin bag?

  • In this case choose two bags that complement each other . A backpack as a personal bag and a wheeled trolley are a perfect combination, especially if the backpack has a back sleeve to fit it over a trolley handle.
  • If you have kids and you are going around with a stroller, it could be useful to consider a duffle bag to attach to the stroller and a backpack as a bigger carry on bag . Even when you have something super easy to maneuver around like our Joolz Geo , it’s always better to have your hands free!
  • If you often bring your laptop with you then consider a bag that has a dedicated, easily accessible space for it . Make sure you also check the size of the dedicated space, as some trolleys seem to have reduced the size of their front pockets.`
  • If you fly often with different airlines , it could be useful to choose a bag that is expandable . Ryanair hand luggage sizes are the most restrictive between all the low cost airlines.

Hard-shell or soft-shell?

Hard-shell have improved a lot in the recent years, there are now expandable models and even models with laptop space. They are great to better protect your contents and perfect if you also travel a lot with traditional airlines and occasionally check in your bag. The soft bags on the other hand are more flexible with many different features to organise and keep on hand small items. They are also a little more forgiving if you have over packed and need to fit in airline bag checkers.

4 wheels or 2 wheels?

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. Bags with 4 wheels move really swiftly around you, but you always need to be careful when you stop, unless you bought one of the newest models with brakes they will keep moving if you stop on a slope. The wheels are also usually more exposed and they could damage more easily with cheaper models. Bags with 2 wheels have the advantage of usually having more capacity as the wheels are partially recessed into the bag structure.

RELATED: Best tablets for 2 year olds

Our experience

We have several pieces of luggage so we are lucky to be able to choose which is more convenient based on the airlines we fly with or the trip we do.

Some models, or their updated versions, made it onto the list like the Aerolite duffle bag, the American Tourister sound box, the Cabin Max Manatthan, and a Delsey hard-shell (The Delsey bag at the moment doesn’t seem available so I’ve removed it from the list).

Ryanair personal item (size 20x25x40)

As a personal bag (free on board), nowadays, we use backpacks . The small duffle bag has been parked in favor of a more organised backpack. On one of our latest trips (9/10 days) we managed with just one free personal bag each. We packed minimally, and we washed what we needed halfway through the trip. It seems that every time Ryanair change/reduces/makes more restrictive their luggage policy, we manage to shrink our luggage, and since the boys were little we have been perfecting our essential packing list.

I tend to overpack, but I need to be honest Ryanair never stopped me at the gate. We have 3 other backpacks (plus the small ones for the kids), apart from the Cabin Zero that is already on the list. They are not on the list as they are slightly over the hand luggage size for Ryanair. Between them, there is another of my absolute favorite: the Tripped backpack, (you could see it in the picture above) this is an unstructured backpack, really light and foldable.

I use packing cubes so it becomes just a shell around them, and when we arrive at our destination I can use it to go around. This backpack is also a perfect gift for a friend who is passionate about travel, after you use it once you will not want to leave it behind.

Ryanair priority bags

The American Tourister hard-shell is my favorite for the look and the flexibility you get from the expansion.

Another bag we love is the Eminent hard shell . We bought it when Ryanair was letting you bring 1 piece of hand luggage onboard for free, but it was a smaller size. Eminent makes super strong and easy-to-manoeuvre suitcases (also in the right size 20x40x55 cm). It isn’t on the list only because it is not easy to find.

I hope this guide will help you to save money next time you fly Ryanair or any other low-cost airlines, let me know in the comments if you found the best Ryanair cabin bag for you!

This is so handy! Thank you. Just wanted to make you award though that the American Tourister Soundbox you have linked is 23cm depth which is bigger than Ryanair allows?

Hi Rachel, I’m happy you find this handy! The American Tourister Soundbos is expandable from 20cm to 23cm. I think Amazon doesn’t make it super clear, but if you look under product description you will see that it say 40 x 20 x 55 cm and at the top it say Expandable to 55 x 40 x 23 cm I have this model and it is my favourite suitcase!

Ryanair passengers warned to ditch packing 'hack' that could leave you paying more

Budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet are well known for attracting customers with their low-cost upfront fares, but you can end up forking out more if you fall foul of their strict rules

Ryanair passengers should ditch the packing hacks if they want to avoid additional fees.

Budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet are well known for attracting customers with their low-cost upfront fares, which can see holidaymakers jet off to all parts of Europe for as little as £15. However, these cheap tickets often come with extra charges, especially for those who wish to travel with more than the free hand luggage allowance.

This is particularly the case for Ryanair, where free allowances are minimal and the customers regularly find themselves falling foul of the airline's strict check-in policy.

In a bid to see how best to make the most of the slightly meagre baggage allowance some airlines offer, experts from Which? Travel decided to test some common packing hacks to see which ones were the most effective for fitting the most items into a small bag.

Given that Ryanair's allowance for its under-seat carry-on and larger paid-for cabin bag is among the smallest of most budget carriers, Which? used bags that fit the Irish airline's restrictions.

"We used two under-seat bags with the dimensions 40x25x25cm: a tiny wheelie case by a brand called Travel Ready and a squishy holdall by Kono that went viral on social media for being the ideal Ryanair-sized carry-on you can fill to the brim without going over the strict dimensions," the price comparison publication wrote. "And then two pieces of larger carry-on luggage: a hard-shelled suitcase and a rucksack (50x40x20cm), both Cabin Max."

Vacuum bags and packing cubes are popular on social media, where they are often recommended by experts and influencers. Manufacturers suggest they will help customers pack more in less space, while one brand of vacuum roll bags boasts it will help you fit three times as many clothes into your suitcase.

"Head to TikTok and you'll find video after video of users raving about 'the sorcery' of compression cubes and how they help them to cram more into their bags," Which? wrote. However, when it came to packing the experts found that the vacuum packaging and cubes fit less than simply folding their clothes into the bags.

Similarly, they also found folding fit slightly more clothes than when they rolled. "Our results show you can forget the hype around vacuum packing and compression cubes. Even rolling our clothes didn't give us an advantage," said the Which? experts.

"Instead, we found that folding was best. We fitted 129 garments across all four bags using this technique that's 16 more pieces of clothing than vacuum packing. The compression cubes social media influencers sometimes promote also failed to impress in our test. They fitted in 11 items fewer than folding, although they were useful for stuffing in lots and lots of socks because there were plenty of gaps left around each cube. But considering we spent over £50 on these cubes, we expected them to work miracles."

Ryanair's policy allows customers to bring one small personal bag on board, such as a handbag or laptop bag. However, this bag is limited to the dimensions of 40 x 20 x 25cm and must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. If your luggage exceeds this size, you'll be required to pay an additional fee.

Meanwhile, easyJet passengers travelling on a standard flight ticket are permitted to carry a slightly larger under-seat cabin bag on board at no extra cost. The maximum dimensions for this bag include handles and wheels and cannot exceed 45 x 36 x 20cm.

Ryanair passengers should 'forget packing cubes and rolling' if they want to avoid fees

R yanair passengers have been warned to 'forget packing cubes and rolling' if they want to avoid additional fees. Budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet often attract customers with their low-cost fares, some even less than £20.

However, these cheap tickets often come with extra charges, especially for those who wish to travel with more than the free hand luggage allowance. This is particularly true for Ryanair, where free allowances are minimal.

Over the years, the free baggage allowance of budget airlines seems to be continuously decreasing. The experts from Which? Travel decided to test some common packing hacks to see which ones were the most effective for fitting the most items into a small bag, reports the Express .

How much free luggage can you take with Ryanair and easyJet?

Ryanair's policy allows customers to bring one small personal bag on board, such as a handbag or laptop bag. However, this bag is limited to the dimensions of 40 x 20 x 25cm and must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. If your luggage exceeds this size, you'll be required to pay an additional fee.

On the other hand, easyJet passengers travelling on a standard flight ticket are permitted to carry a slightly larger under-seat cabin bag on board at no extra cost. The maximum dimensions for this bag include handles and wheels and cannot exceed 45 x 36 x 20cm.

Those who arrive at the airport with oversized baggage that doesn't comply with these regulations can expect to pay considerably more than what they would've had they reserved extra baggage online.

The consumer choice organisation Which? advises passengers to carefully review their luggage allowance to avoid unexpected fees. "Even going over an airline's allowance by a few centimetres could end up costing you," they cautioned.
