How To Reach?

Reaching the starting point of the Kudremukh Trek, located in the Kudremukh National Park, from Bengaluru involves several convenient options:

Bengaluru has excellent railway connectivity with major cities across India. From Bengaluru, you can catch a train to Mangalore, the nearest major railway station to Kudremukh. The journey typically takes about 8-10 hours. You can hire a private cab from Mangalore or catch a local bus to Kudremukh, which is approximately 130 kilometres away and takes around 3-4 hours.

Regular state-run KSRTC buses are available from Bengaluru to Kudremukh. The bus journey can take around 8-9 hours. Shared cabs might also be available from the bus station to the starting point of the trek.

Private or shared cabs from Bengaluru to Kudremukh are another option, though they can be more expensive. The distance is approximately 350 kilometres and can take around 7-8 hours, depending on the traffic and road conditions.

By Private Vehicle:

If you prefer to go by car, you can reach Kudremukh by private vehicle. The distance from Bengaluru to Kudremukh is roughly 350 kilometres, which takes about 7-8 hours via NH75. Check the road conditions and the vehicle’s fitness before the journey.

Best Time To Do The Kudremukh Trek

Embarking on the Kudremukh Trek during different seasons gives you distinct and spectacular experiences, each marked by unique highlights and weather patterns.

Monsoon (June-September): Kudremukh during monsoon is a sight, with the greenery coming alive under the gentle downpour. Kudremukh trek guide: The best rolling hills you’ll ever see

Would you like to experience an adventurous trek which has the best rolling green hills you’ll ever see, get engulfed in clouds and mist and walk through an evergreen forest full of water streams?

Then you must try the Kudremukh trek.

Known as the mini ‘Scotland of India ‘, the Kudremukh trek is one of the best treks in Karnataka that exposes you to diverse natural sceneries and landscapes within the Kudremukh National Park.

It is also home to the third-highest peak in Karnataka and the best part is that you can do it on your own even if you’re a beginner.

I did the Kudremukh trek from Mangalore and in this guide, I would like to tell you the itinerary I followed so that you can plan an effective solo trek to Kudremukh.

Which Kudremukh trek packages can I sign up for?

Where is kudremukh.

Kudremukh is also a small hill station cum mining town located 100 km from Chikmagalur.

It derives its name from its Kannada name Kuduremukha meaning horse-faced which is how the Kudremukh peak appears.

The Kudremukh trek happens inside the Kudremukh National Park which is home to several endangered and endemic species like lion-tailed macaque, leopard and gaur.

Why should you do the Kudremukh trek?

The Kudremukh trek is ideal for nature lovers who want to experience a different side of Karnataka. The following are the 3 reasons why you should do the Kudremukh trek:

1. The best rolling hills you’ll ever see on a trek

Kudremukh has the best rolling hills you’ll ever see on a trek in the Western Ghats. They appear as if they’re taken from a Windows wallpaper. The best view is from the Kudremukh peak where you can see a range of never-ending rolling hills.

2 . Ridge walk surrounded by clouds and mist

The last section of the trek wherein you walk through a ridge has some of the best views as you get to see sweeping valleys and mountain ranges all around you. To add to that, you’ll also be engulfed in clouds and mist if you trek after the monsoon season.

3. Hike through evergreen forests filled with water streams

The initial walk through the shola forest is filled with adventure as you’ll be crossing several water streams and surrounding yourself with a variety of trees and birds. If lucky, you can also spot several endangered and endemic species like the Malabar giant squirrel, lion-tailed macaque and deer.

How to reach Kudremukh?

The starting point for the Kudremukh trek is Mullodi which is a small village with few houses. It houses the Kudremukh Trek Forest Office from where you need to get a ticket for the Kudremukh trek.

Mullodi lies between Kudremukh and Kalasa, a nearby town which is accessible by public transport.

The two nearest cities to Kudremukh are Mangalore (100 km) and Bangalore (330 km). As such, it’s always ideal that you start your journey from these two cities as you’ll find various options for transport.

The Mangalore airport is the nearest airport to Kudremukh at 90 km followed by the Bangalore airport which is at a distance of 351 km. Both the airports are well-connected to all the major airports in the country.

The Mangalore railway station is 100 km from Kudremukh, followed by the Bangalore railway station which is at a distance of 330 km.

If you’re travelling from Mangalore, there are limited buses from Mangalore to Kudremukh. There is one bus in the afternoon around 12-1 pm which leaves for Kalasa from the Mangalore private bus stand, also known as the State Bank Bus Stand.

As an alternative, you can take a bus to Karkala. From Karkala, you can find frequent buses to Kalasa.

Once you reach Kalasa, you can get another local bus/auto to the Balagal bus stop (10 km away). From here, you can hire a jeep to go to Mullodi, which is 5 km away.

If you’re travelling from Bangalore to Kudremukh, you can book an overnight bus from Bangalore to Horanadu via Kalasa from the KSRTC website . You’ll reach Kalasa around 6 am. From Kalasa, you can take another bus/auto to the Balagal bus stop and then hire a jeep to go to Mullodi.

How to do the Kudremukh trek on your own?

There are two ways to do the Kudremukh trek as a solo traveller.

The first way is to book an overnight bus to Horannadu via Kalasa (if you’re travelling from Bangalore), start your trek the next morning and leave by evening. This is ideal if you only have a day to spare.

But for the best experience, I recommend sparing two days for the Kudremukh trek. It ensures that you have a relaxed and hassle-free experience. If you choose this option, you can also book your stay with the Bella homestay, the best homestay in Kudremukh according to the internet and my personal experience.

The advantage is that Bella homestay provides food and accommodation, and arranges your jeep to the base camp, your entry ticket for the Kudremukh trek and a trekking guide.

It is what I did for my solo trek to the Kudremukh peak.

Chandan, the owner of Bella homestay, was beneficial in making sure that I had an amazing trek to the Kudremukh peak.

Before you start your trek, make sure you call Chandan to enquire about the availability of the Bella homestay for your dates.

Search for ‘Bella Homestay Kudremukh’ on Google to get his number. You can also ask him for other details about the trek, transport options, accommodation options, etc. and he’ll be happy to help you out.

You need to pay a token amount to Chandan online to confirm your booking.

Your DIY Kudremukh Trekking Itinerary

I’ll be talking about my solo Kudremukh trekking experience in great detail in the upcoming sections so that you too can follow the same itinerary. As mentioned, I booked my stay at Bella Homestay before I went for the trek.

I started my journey from Mangalore to Kudremukh for this trek. I chose this option as starting a journey from Bangalore would have taken more time.

Note : If you’re travelling from Bangalore to Kudremukh, you can book an overnight bus to Horanadu via Kalasa from the KSRTC website and start the trek after freshening up.

I reached Mangalore by 10 am via train, ate breakfast at one of the restaurants and went to the Mangalore private bus stand, also known as the State Bank Bus Stand.

There is a bus which leaves at around 12-1 pm for Kalasa. You can enquire about this bus from anyone there (as I did). I boarded this bus and had a comfortable journey as the crowd was less and the roads were tidy.

As we start nearing Kalasa, the air becomes cooler and the landscape becomes greener.

I finally reached Kalasa by 5 pm and got down at one particular location where Chandan (the owner of Bella Homestay) had told me to get down.

Chandan was there waiting for me and he took me to his homestay via his bike.

The Bella Homestay is ideally located in a remote area surrounded by mountain ranges.

The homestay itself is well-maintained with options for rooms and camping. You get home-cooked food, free wifi and amazing hospitality from the hosts.

I occupied one of their tents, freshened up and had black tea with their homemade snacks. More people checked in as the sun sets in, and Chandan set up the campfire at night.

Major tour operators like Plan the Unplanned and Bangalore Mountain Club also book their accommodation with the Bella Homestay for their Kudremukh trek packages.

At 8-9 pm, we had home-cooked dinner after which all of the guests retired for the night.

Note : If you love stargazing, you’ll in for a treat as you’ll observe clear skies with stars all over the place.

The next day, I woke up by 6:00 am, freshened up and had breakfast. We were also given packed lunches for the Kudremukh trek.

Chandan clubbed me with a group of five people for the Kudremukh trek. They were also staying in the same homestay.

We boarded a jeep and by 7 am, we departed for Mullondi, the starting point of the Kudremukh trek. It took almost half an hour for us to reach the starting point as the terrain was rugged and untarred.

You’ll enjoy this ride as you get the first glimpse of what you can expect from the trek. You’ll cross coffee plantations and muddy roads with streams on the way.

At the starting point, you’ll find the Kudremukh Trek forest office. This office is open from 6 am to 6 pm.

Here, you have to pay for the entry fees, guide and DSLR/camera (if you’re carrying any). Your bags will also be checked as you aren’t allowed to carry any plastic inside the Kudremukh National Park (including plastic-packed biscuits and snacks).

Note: Only 50 people will get permission in a day. If you haven’t taken the help of a homestay, make sure you reach the forest office as early as possible.

From the forest office, you need to trek for 9 km to reach the Kudremukh peak. You can divide this trek into 3 parts:

1. Forest office to Ontimara (lone tree)

2. Ontimara to the zig-zag section

3. Ridge walk (zig-zag section) to Kudremukh peak

Section I: From Forest office to Ontimara (lone tree)

We started the Kudremukh trek by 8 am.

You’ll be walking through open grassland for less than a kilometre before you reach the First Tree View Point. During this walk, you’ll be able to observe mountain ranges and a valley in front of you covered in mist.

You’ll soon enter the Shola thick forest. In this forest, you’ll find multiple streams of water, the first of which you’ll cross after 15-20 minutes.

Note : You can fill your bottle with water from these streams as they’re very clean.

You’ll enjoy trekking through this forest because the ascent is gradual and if you’re lucky, you may even spot some animals.

Soon enough, you’ll be exiting the forest area. The landscape opens up and you’ll be able to see the Kudremukh peak for the first time from here. You’ll be surrounded by several shrubs and ferns until you see a lonely tree, known locally as Ontimara.

You can rest here for some time.

Section II: Ontimara to the zig-zag section

From Ontimara, the initial ascent is flat with the Kudremukh valley on the right. This trail soon enters a forest trail for some time with water streams before you exit it.

After this, you’ll be trekking in a completely open landscape through a narrow path for at least an hour. There will be steep ascents and bamboo shrubs surrounding you.

You’ll be walking along the edges of hills as you observe people who are ascending from below.

While you trek from Ontimara to the zig-zag section, keep an eye out on the surrounding landscapes as you’ll observe rolling hills and sweeping valleys at different stages. You may want to take out your camera and capture the sceneries that keep changing.

As you near the zig-zag section, there will be a steep ascent. This is another section where you should keep an eye out for the scenery. The whole of Kudremukh valley opens up after some point.

Section III: Ridge walk (zig-zag section) to Kudremukh peak

From the start of the zig-zag section, you’ll be taking a complete u-turn as you got towards the peak. As the name suggests, you will be trekking through a zig-zag trail for 1 km.

After the zig-zag section ends, make sure you visit the ruins of the British era church which is a diversion on the right side. It has an interesting history as it used to be a resting house for the Britishers.

The entire structure is now completely dilapidated and covered with plants. After visiting the church, come back to the trail.

From here on, you’ll be walking on a ridge as you can see the trail and also the peak right in front of you. The walk from here to the peak is one of the most beautiful parts of the trek as you can see panoramic views of the valleys and hills around you.

If you’re lucky, you might also be surrounded by clouds and mist. It takes another 40 minutes from here to reach the Kudremukh peak.

We reached the Kudremukh peak by noon i.e. it took us four hours in total to complete the trek in one direction.

Without a doubt, the best view of the entire trek comes from the Kudremukh peak. You can get a 270-degree view of all the mountains surrounding you. Depending on the weather, you may also be engulfed in clouds and mist.

You will also be able to see the Kudremukh horse face in all its glory. It is a peak that resembles the face of the horse. You can try capturing the same and all the other beautiful sceneries you observe from here.

Spend some time soaking in the atmosphere and have your packed lunch.

After spending a couple of hours at the top, we started trekking back (at 2 pm) to Mullodi via the same route.

Note : Make sure you leave by 2 pm so that you’re able to reach the Kudremukh Forest Check Post before 6 pm.

Be careful while descending because some sections can be tricky. We reached back at the Kudremukh forest check post by 5 pm i.e. it took us 3 hours to descend back.

In total, we covered 9+9=18 km for the entire trek. At the check post, Chandan was there waiting for me. He picked me up as I went back to the homestay.

From thereon, I clubbed with another person I met on the trek as we went back to Mangalore together.

You can also go to Kalasa from where you can get frequent buses to Bangalore and connecting buses to Mangalore. Be sure to ask your host about the bus timings in advance so that you plan properly.

How difficult is the Kudremukh trek?

The Kudremukh trek is a beginner’s trek that can be done by anyone with reasonable fitness. During the 18 km hike to the top and back, there will be some sections where the ascent might be steep but in general, it will be a gradual increase.

Best time for the Kudremukh trek

The Kudremukh trek is one of those treks where the trekking season plays a vital role. And hence, I suggest you trek after the monsoon season or during winters i.e September to February.

The weather in Kudremukh during these months enhances the beauty of the Kudremukh trek. The landscape is greener and you’ll have pleasant weather throughout the trek with mist and clouds surrounding you.

You can also give the monsoon season a shot but the problem is that the terrains become slippery and there will be the added problem of leaches.

The summer season has to be avoided at any cost as the scorching heat of the sun drains your energy

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to trek kudremukh.

It can take 4-5 hours to do the trek from the Kudremukh Trek Forest Office (the starting point of the trek) to the Kudremukh Peak. While returning, it will take 3-4 hours.

So in total, you can take 7-9 hours to complete the entire trek depending on your speed.

Can we trek Kudremukh alone?

Yes, you can trek alone to Kudremukh. However, you’ll still need to arrange your entry tickets from the forest office (limited to 50 tickets per day) which might be difficult to get as a lot of homestays nearby have tie-ups with the forest office.

Hence, I suggest that you sign up for one of these homestays. It ensures that you get your tickets in advance while you also get to trek alone. It is what I did as I trekked solo to Kudremukh but with the help of a homestay.

Do note that camping in Kudremukh is not allowed.

The best time to visit Kudremukh is during the post-monsoon and winter months i.e. from September to February. During these months, the landscape is greener and the weather is cooler which makes the entire Kudremukh landscape appealing. As a bonus, you’ll also be engulfed in mists and clouds in certain sections of the trek. Hence, ensure that you do the trek when the weather in Kudremukh is ideal.

You can sign up with tour operators like Plan The Unplanned (PTU) and Bangalore Mountaineering Club (BMC). They organise the Kudremukh trek and their packages include food, accommodation, transport to and from Bangalore, a jeep ride to base camp, the entry fees for the trek and a guide.

Alternatively, you can sign up with homestays in Kudremukh like the Bella Homestay or Raaje Gowda’s Home Stay which also provide everything except the transport to and from Bangalore. Here too, you’ll be able to meet like-minded people who, just like you, have come for the Kudremukh trek.

I had an amazing time trekking to the Kudremukh peak as a solo traveller. The sights and sounds of nature along with the people I met on the trek made it an engaging experience.

The best thing about the Kudremukh trek is that it is a beginner’s trek that can be completed within a day or two.

If you’re coming from Bangalore, take an overnight bus and complete the trek on the same day. Alternatively, you can reach Kudremukh via bus in the afternoon, check in to a homestay there, and do the trek the next day.

If you’re coming from Mangalore, I suggest you leave for Kudremukh in the morning/afternoon, check in to your homestay and do the trek the next day.

I strongly recommend staying at the Bella Homestay as they’re very helpful in ensuring that you have an amazing trek to the Kudremukh peak.

Choose the right season, ensure you’re fit and carry the essential things you need for the trek so that you have the best possible experience.

Rest assured, the Kudremukh National Park gives you access to some of the best natural sceneries you’ll see in Karnataka.

If you’ve more time before/after the Kudremukh trek, I suggest that you spend a couple of days in Chikmagalur as well as it also has some breathtaking sceneries that’ll blow your mind.

The distance from Chikmagalur to Kudremukh is barely 100 km and you’ll also enjoy the road trip between these two popular hill stations in Karnataka.

Kudremukh Trek Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Kudremukh the “trekkers paradise” and the 3rd highest peak in Karnataka was going to be my next destination. Kudremukh which means “Horse Face” in Kannada because the peak resembles the horse’s face. Didn’t give any thought about the fitness before leaving. But trust me if you are not fit please don’t even try this trek. It has a lush green landscape which you can adore for a lifetime. Also, you can get a similar picture to the bliss theme(Windows XP wallpaper). One of the most important things is carrying your Aadhar copy for the permit which I’ll tell in detail further.

The best time to visit the Kudremukh trek

The best time to visit Kudremukh would be after the Monsoon from October to March. You can go after March as well but it starts getting hotter which makes the trekking harder. During the monsoon, a lot of leeches can be found hanging everywhere make sure to cover your full body with clothes.

How to reach from Bangalore to Kudremukh

I started my trip from Bangalore in the night. So to reach Kudremukh there are no direct buses instead we have to get down at Kalasa and from Kalasa take another bus to the base of Kudremukh Trek. There are not a lot of buses from Kalasa to the base of the Kudremukh trek, thus do check the bus timings beforehand. You can either book a seater or sleeper based on your choice. Sugama Tourist and KSRTC provide the bus to Kalasa. The price starts from ₹375 to ₹650 for seater and sleeper respectively.

I took the seater and the bus reached Kalasa in the early morning by 5 am. It was pitch dark and very cold so make sure to carry at least one woollen clothing with you. The bus drops you near the police station. Take a right from there and after going a few steps ahead you’ll find the petrol pump from where you’ll get the next bus to Kudremukh. It surely made me feel like I should settle here in the calmness of the town. The people of the town were also very simple and humble. The city buses start at 6:30 in the morning. The distance from Kalasa to the base of Kudremukh trek is approximately 10Kms. The bus charges ₹20 only.

If going with a group you can get down at Balegal. Once you get down at Balegal you can hire a jeep, which will drop you to the forest office for permission and also take you to the base camp of the Kudremukh trek. The jeep costs Rs 150-200 per person. For solo travelers, you can directly go on the bus to Kudremukh check post forest gate 2. But you can only do the trek if you manage to find a group in which you can fit in.

Things to know about trekking in Kudremukh.

The first and the most important thing is the Aadhar copy without which you wouldn’t get the permit to trek. The permit charges are ₹425 per person which you have to pay at the forest office. Once you have the permit you can go back in the jeep to the base camp. The base camp(Mulodi) is 6 Km from Balegal. Hold on to your seat well, ’cause this is gonna be one hell of a ride. The trek is 18 km both ways and usually takes 4-5 hours one way. The trekking is not allowed after 9:30 am.

Where to stay in Kudremukh

The forest officer will say there is no place to stay near the base camp. But trust me you can stay in Raje Gowda’s home which is right at the base camp. Once you reach the base camp you can keep your luggage in his place and freshen up. If you are carrying your tent he will charge you ₹500 for pitching your tent and 4 times food(2 Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner). But if you want a room in his place you will have to pay him ₹ 700.

Kudremukh trek base camp: The beginning of lush green landscapes.

On leaving the Raje Gowda’s homestay, make sure to pack some lunch for yourself. You need to have a guide for this trek or else you can’t do this trek. The guide charges ₹300 – ₹500 per person based on how good you can bargain. The trek starts from the forest office in the base camp. Please don’t litter the national park as while coming back the bags and if you have left anything on the trek they will fine you. I started the trek at 9:15 AM The start of the trek is easy, all you see is lush green mountains. On the way, you see a lot many boards which tell you about the animals in the national park. You would be lucky if you spot even one of them all, I could find was leeches(insect).

The Kudremukh permit fee is ₹ 600 per person

The first stop: picturesque tree

Trekking almost a kilometre you’ll find a tree, which is a great place for photography and you can take a 5-minute break. The peak is also seen from here. You can carry one water bottle which is sufficient as you will find many water streams from where you can drink the water directly. The Kudremukh trekking route is just amazing with the green landscape on the bottom and white clouds at the top. On going further you will cross a couple of water streams. The first 4-5 km of the trek is easy.

The second stop: Another picturesque tree

I wonder did someone planted these trees and made them resting spots or if these trees were already present and people stopped here for photography and then they became resting spots. Beyond this tree, the main trek starts. You find your first steep climb. Make sure to have a good breakfast at the start of the trek and don’t be like me. I almost gave up because I hadn’t eaten my breakfast until the guide told me to have something. So everyone went front and after finishing my breakfast I started the trek again.

You just can’t stop admiring the place. The peak looks even closer now. After every km, there is a water stream. The water is so cold and drinkable, which makes you feel so refreshed.

Almost reached the second steep, this time I felt better to climb it but then since not being fit, I did make many stops. It was already 1 pm, and our guide told us to hurry up as while getting down it would get dark.

The summit: Finally did it!

During the trek, I had given up so many times but I don’t know what still kept me going. And after almost 4 hours I did reach the summit. Had some lunch there, rested for a while, and took some photos. The peak is all covered in the clouds. No visibility because of the clouds and it gets cold as well. After taking some deserved rest and some decent photos we start to trek down. Getting down is easier but is risky as well. One wrong step and you might hurt yourself very badly.

The Descent: Kudremukh trek

The descent was again very picturesque and it took a total of 3 hours. After reaching the base the forest officers checked our bag whether we hadn’t left anything in the national park. Reaching the homestay I had some snacks and pitched my tent. Since it was almost drizzling I placed my tent on the house verandah. After having dinner early(8 pm) I dozed off. In the night it did rain heavily. Mind you there is no or less signal in the homestay.

Day 2: Time to see some falls

I got up by 8 am and started preparing for the day. I had enquired everyone about the famous Hanuman Gundi Falls. Since they have closed it I planned to go see another fall – Ellaneru Falls. After having some breakfast I left the homestay. You can tell the owner of the homestay to call the jeep. Since I preferred to walk down to click some good photos. On the way found an old man who too was walking down. And I spoke with him in Kannada. I guess I hadn’t spoken so much Kannada in the last 14 years, how much I spoke in the last 2 days. It surely made the people feel good as well.

I reached the bus stop and took the bus to Samse. The bus ticket was just ₹8.

The hidden falls: Ellaneru falls

After reaching Samse I asked one of the localite about the direction to the falls. After walking for almost 2 km, I was almost inside the forest. Very few houses could now be seen. I asked in one of the houses and they told me it’s just 1km(Which never got over). I started walking but then there came a time when there was no one seen on the path. It gets scary when you are solo traveling to places like these. After going further I found 2 bikers coming top. Upon enquiring with them they told me the falls is another 200mts. Found some relief, reached the falls, and found no one there. I relaxed for some time there and had to rush because of a lot of leeches. On the way back stopped at some beautiful streams which had some beautiful rice fields at the back. Once you reach the main road you can take an auto to the bust stop it will just be ₹20.

The Beauty of Samse: Tea Plantation

My next stop was a tea plantation spot. It was just the next stop. It was already 3 pm and I had started to starve. I decided to finish seeing the tea plantation soon and catch the bus to Kalasa. Upon reaching there on the left you can see the water flowing and on the right is the beautiful tea plantation. It is a must-visit place if you come for the Kudremukh trek.

Final Stop Kalasa: The trip is over

After spending 30 mins at the tea plantation I took the bus back to Kalasa and had some amazing egg-fried rice at a local restaurant for 70 Rs. It was already 4:30 pm, and my bus was in the night at 9 pm. So I just stayed in the waiting space for the bus which smelled bad but didn’t have any other place to go either. The time just passed and it was already 8 pm, so preferred to have dinner soon. Had loved the fried rice so much and ordered the same thing with half a plate of chicken which cost me ₹150. And to digest everything had some Soda which was ₹25. The bus was on time and after sitting on the bus I don’t remember when I slept. Reached Bangalore early morning by 6 am. This was the end of an adventurous trip. Kudremukh trek taught me a lot of things: Try to always be fit, and never skip food while traveling. It was a great learning overall.

Hiking Guide To Kudremukh Peak From Bangalore (INR 1858)

Kuduremukha or Kudremukh is a mountain peak nestled in the western ghats in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka. It is the 3rd highest peak in Karnataka after Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri. The trail is immensely popular among the trekking and hiking community. Impressively, Kudremukh is also one of the UNESCO world heritage sites.

The Kudremukh Peak despite it being a hard one is a must if you are an ardent fan of trekking. This guide will help you by providing you with all the pertinent information that you will need to complete this trek by yourself, or in a group, either in a single day or as a weekend trip.

Kudremukh Hiking Guide

“Kudre” means horse and “Mukha” means face in the Kannada language. The peak of the Kudremukh resembles the face of a horse. Hence, named Kudremukh or Kuduremukha.

How To Reach Kudremukh?

The nearest airport to Kalasa is the Mangalore International Airport (Airport code: IXE, 111 Km). From there, there are no direct buses available. However, you can book a cab from the airport and reach Kalasa by road.

Kalasa is not well-networked with railway stations. The nearest railway station to Kalasa is the Chikmagalur railway station (Station Code: CMGR, 88 Km). Be advised that the train frequency is low and also there are no direct buses from Chikkamagaluru to Kalasa. It is better not to use the rails as an option.

The best option to reach Kalasa is by boarding a direct bus from Bangalore to Horanadu via Kalasa or by using a private vehicle. As the number of buses is limited to only 4, it is better to book seats at least 2 weeks in advance during peak seasons. You will have to step down from the bus at Kalasa.

Please note that direct KSRTC buses are not available from any of these places – Mangalore, Udupi, Mysore, and Chikkamagaluru. Usually, the buses from Chikmagalur stop at Kalasa. You can ask the driver and get off the bus at Balgal village , 10 Km away from Kalasa. The roads are not good until the forest check post office. You can hop on one of the jeeps that are parked there and hop down at the forest office at extra charges (Rs. 1500 which includes the return journey). Make sure to note the driver’s contact for the return journey.

If you are coming from Horanadu, board a bus to Kalasa. From Kalasa, opposite the petrol bunk, board a bus to Balgal village.

We went by Airavat – AC semi-sleeper KSRTC bus from Bangalore. But we would recommend you choose a sleeper bus to ensure you are well-rested.

Note: From Bangalore – if you are choosing the Airavat bus, the journey ends at 5 AM. But it’s best if you prepare yourself for a possible delay of at least 2 hours. Reaching, stretching your legs, having breakfast in the homestay, and getting to the forest check post office, will take approximately 1 – 1:30 hours. Timing is crucial, the earlier you start the trek, the better and the last entry is at 10 AM.

We hired a jeep that accommodated 8 people and we roamed for a day after the trek covering all the places near Kalasa . It cost us Rs. 4500 per day. Here is the contact number of the jeep that we hired:

Note: No two-wheeler rentals are available in Kalasa. OLA, Uber, and other taxi services are not available.

You can do the Kudremukh hike all year round. During the summer months between January and June, the forest is dry, hot, and humid. The continuous rains during the monsoon months of July and August make the hike more challenging with leeches.

We feel that the ideal time to visit Kudremukh is during the post-monsoon season, from September to December.

Good cellular reception was found at the summit by Airtel, Jio, and BSNL. Although an intermittent Jio network is found along the trail, it is not reliable.

After Kalasa, only Jio has intermittent reception. There will be no signal in other operators.

There is no ATM available nearby. So, ensure you carry sufficient cash. ATMs are available only in Kalasa and Horanadu.

The regional language, Kannada, is the only language spoken by the people in the region. As Kudremukh Peak is frequented by hikers and trekkers, some guides and homestay owners speak Hindi and English.

Parking space is available at the base of the trek, just 50 m before the forest check post office, near the Mullodi homestay.

There is only one restroom at the forest check post office. You are dependent on nature for the rest of the day while trekking the national park.

Restaurants are very limited in the region. Have breakfast and dinner at the homestay itself. They will give you a packed lunch provided you informed them earlier that you are planning to go for the Kudremukh trek.

You can stock up on snacks from a couple of shops that are available at the Balgal bus stop. Make sure you remove all the plastics and store them in some containers as plastic wrappers are prohibited inside the Kudremukh National Park.

Note: Food door delivery services like Zomato and Swiggy are not available.

Homestays are the best go-to options in the region. We stayed at Kallu Kore homestay. Their hospitality is great and the rooms were neat and clean with ample parking space. Both non-veg and veg food options are available, and the food is great. Morning and evening tea with snacks are served.

For trekking, inform them earlier so that they can arrange breakfast early and pack lunches for you and your group to carry for the hike and the vehicles for your commute.

If you are looking for a cozy place to stay with good food, then this is your place. If you are on a budget, hiking the Kudremukh peak, you can also stay in dorm rooms near the forest check post office.

Another budget way is to stay at the temple guesthouse at Horanadu. The room costs as low as Rs. 250 for 2 persons per night. Book prior if you are planning to stay during the weekends as they are very crowded.

Hiking is a popular activity at the Kudremukh National Park. This is a great place for trekking enthusiasts to spend time with nature. There are also a few other places near Kalasa that you should visit during your hiking trip.

Entry fee: Rs. 575 per person (for Indians) + Rs. 1000 for a guide (for 8 persons). Extra charges for DSLR + lenses that you carry. The price differs for students and foreigners.

Registration: Not required.

Permission:

Permission is mandatory for Kudremukh Peak. Reach the forest check post office as early as possible and get permission from them. A few years ago, they allowed only 100 people per day for the trek. But now, there are no restrictions on the number of persons entering the forests.

Camping: Not allowed

Timings: Entry – from 6 AM to 10 AM, Exit – 6 PM

Duration: 4 – 5 hours for the ascend, 2 – 3 hours to descend.

Summit Height: 1892 m

Hike Distance: 22 Km, two-way. Although the board on the forest check post office displays 9 Km (one way), the distance measured is more than that.

Water Resources:

Water from the streams and waterfalls found at multiple lengths along the hiking route can be used for drinking. Make sure you bring your own non-plastic reusable water bottles.

Hiking Route:

The trek starts from the Kudremukh forest check post office . There are Km markings along the hike, measuring the distance to the summit. There are no signboards for directions along the trail. Follow the instructions of the guide and always walk in groups.

Until the first tree viewpoint followed by the 7 Km trail marking, the hike is a relatively easy walk. After that, the ascend starts and it gradually becomes steep.

The rocky uphill ascend is extremely slippery during monsoons. The paths are narrow with increasing heights. So, one has to be extremely careful, because one wrong move could cost you your life.

The view of Onti mara and Kudremukh peak

The popular “Onti Mara” or “lonely tree” marks that you still have 5 Km to go. Followed by a waterfall and viewpoints mark the 4 Km and 3 Km of the trail respectively. The ascend is steep during these sections of the hike.

The views can be best described as spectacular. The multiple beds of mountains shying behind thickets of clouds and the obscure yet persistent peak are truly a sight to behold.

The ridge walk is an easy one while the last stretch to the summit is completely uphill but less challenging when compared to the other legs of the journey that you have already crossed.

Relax and have lunch at the summit and start to descend before 2 PM at any cost. Remember that, it becomes dark in the forests even before the actual sunset.

The peak is visible during most sections of the trail. The descent is the same route as the ascend.

Difficulty Level : Moderate – difficult, highly subjected to your fitness level.

Terrain: Grasslands, Forests, streams, and rocks

Wildlife: Although we didn’t spot any wildlife, except the leeches, the Kudremukh national park is home to some of the rarest families of monkeys including the Lion-Tailed Macaque (Macaca silenus), Hanuman Langur (Semnopithecushypoleucos), and the Malabar Slender Loris (Loris-lydekkerianus malabaricus).

At The Kudremukh Summit:

There are numerous stones piled up with a board marking that you have reached the summit.

The view was misty on one side, while the other was filled with pristine greenery. You can see the paths you crossed and the numerous beds of the mountains of the western ghats as far as the horizon. During the monsoons, the entire view might be covered in mist.

Camping: Camping is not allowed in the Kudremukh National Park. All the visitors should reach the base, forest department office by 6 PM.

Free water and free dinner at Horanadu temple premises. You can also do the Kudremukh trek and cover all the places near Kalasa. The only downside is the packed lunch, but you can get them from a homestay nearby at extra cost (inform prior).

Many group trip organizers offer packages for the Kudremukh trek from Bangalore, Mysore, and Mangalore which costs between Rs. 4000 and Rs. 5000.

You can save on the auto charges to your homestay and jeep charges from Balgal to Kudremukh forest check post by choosing a homestay near the forest check post office or by bringing your vehicle.
Compared to renting a jeep, bringing your vehicle and sharing the expenses would be the better option in terms of comfort and cost-effectiveness.
Staying in Horanadu devasthanam guesthouses will save you more bucks. You’ll also get free food at the premises.
Rather than booking on third-party platforms, we found that booking the rooms directly by calling the owner was much more nominal. You can search for desired homestays on Google and reach out to them directly.
If you complete the hike in a single day and return to your place, say Bangalore, you can save more.
The use of plastics, smoking, and drinking alcohol is strictly prohibited. All the bags are searched thoroughly and any plastic found is immediately disposed of at the forest check post office, including the chocolate wrappers.
As a hiker, it is incumbent on you to be responsible and not litter. Leave it better than it was before.
Taking a guide is mandatory for the Kudremukh hike, without which you will be denied entry. This means that you cannot do this hike solo.
Directions are not marked along the trail. The chances of getting lost are very high in the Kudremukh National Park. So, make sure to stick with your guide or group.
Beware of leeches. There are plenty of leeches found along the trail. It is important to know how to get rid of them the right way.
Ensure you carry at least 1L of water per person. You can refill along the trail.
Take sufficient cash with you as you cannot make online payments because of poor networks in the area.
Take sufficient snacks and energy bars. Shops are also available at Balgal and Kalsa.
Cap, sunscreen & sunglasses are essential if you are hiking from January to June.
Carry a poncho or raincoat if you are traveling from June to December.
Wear comfortable shoes as the hike distance is fairly long.
During monsoon season, trekking poles will help you to wade across the streams along the trail.

How difficult is the Kudremukh trek?

The trek distance of 22 Km has to be completed in a single day with steep ascends. If you are physically fit and mentally strong, you can do this trek. Prior trekking experience also helps. Trek difficulty level is moderate to difficult, this assessment, however, is highly subject to your fitness level.

What is the challenging section of the hike?

Before and after “Onti mara” or “lonely tree”, the ascend is steep for approximately 3 Km. During the monsoons, the leeches and the slippery terrain make the hike more challenging. But trust us, the view and the rewarding journey do justice to all the arduous paths.

Can we hike solo to Kudremukh Peak?

A guide is mandatory to hike to the Kudremukh peak, without which you will be denied entry from the forest check post office, which is the starting point of the trek. This is due to many mishappenings in the region. So, you cannot hike or enter alone. Trespassers will be severely punished and fined.

Kudremukh is the 3rd highest peak of Karnataka , located in the heart of Kudremukh National Park. The name Kudremukh is derived from the side view of this mountain that resembles the Horse face. If trekking in the dense green Western Ghats is in your wish list, Kudremukh is the trek for you.

Kudremukh attracts trekkers from all over India. Trekkers have to mark our attendance at the forest check post to start their hike towards King Kudremukh . Because of the heavy rush, the forest department has even restricted number of trekkers per day.

The initial part of the trek passes through dense forests interspersed with flowing streams of crystal clear water. Crossing these streams is fun, with slippery rocks and chilling water wetting our shoes. This jungle is followed by green carpets of endless grasslands welcoming trekkers onto smooth hill slopes, one above another as if they are meticulously arranged by nature.

Kudremukh trek is a serene experience, in spite of the challenge it offers. After all, finishing a 20 Km (up and down) mountain hike in the diverse terrain of Kudremukh is no mean feat for trekkers. It can take up to 4-5 hours to reach the peak. So it’s better travelers has prior trekking experience or fit enough body to finish the trek.

Along with Kudremukh trek, we will also visit an interesting place named Janivara kere, a huge lake with water sports near to Shravanabelagola. Time permits, we will give a visit to monolithic statue of Bhagwan Bahubali which is said to be more than 1000 year old.

Seasonal Variations:

June to Oct (monsoon): The most beautiful time to trek Kudremukh is in the monsoons. Persistent rains make it a challenging hike but at the same time, present misty fresh weather that can give an unparalleled experience. Expect lots of leeches waiting to latch on.
Nov to Feb (winter): Clouds will make way to clear blue skies. Nights will be colder. The landscapes are still amazing to trek. Kudremukh attracts lots of trekkers in the winter months.
Mar to May (summer): Dry climate. The Forest department usually discontinues Kudremukh to prevent human-triggered forest fires.

What's next after booking your trip?

A Whatsapp group shall be created on the trip day and Vehicle & Trip Leader details will be shared.
It is mandatory to share your personal information with the team along with a copy of your government approved ID card.
You will need to share your co-traveler(s) details if you have booked more than one seat.
Live location of the vehicle will be sent in the group once it starts at the first point.

Terms & Conditions

The itinerary is fixed. No special requests to change itinerary/schedule shall be entertained. Do not give advice(s) to the Trip Leader(s) to change the itinerary.
Cooperate with the organizer(s) in following the schedule set for the day (especially getting up and getting ready in the morning). This will ensure travelers won’t miss out on the real fun part that is traveling.
Every traveler is responsible for his/her for your own safety. Don’t indulge in any illegal or silly activity that causes harm to you or fellow travelers.
Do not wander into the forest away from the designated trail for treks. There may be snakes, scorpions, and dangerous animals.
Unexpected situations: It may happen we do not cover all the places mentioned in the itinerary because of unpredictable reasons like bad weather, landslides, wild animal presence, abrupt blocking of sites by the police/forest department, delay in travel because of an issue with our group itself, traffic conditions, etc. In most cases, if the time permits, the organizer(s) will take travelers to an alternative place. But in some cases, we may have to skip a place altogether.
Absolutely no littering. We swear to protect our environment.
No alcohol & smoking during travel, treks, and other outdoor activities. There would be a separate window and space (usually at night) to have these at the campsite/homestay for interested people.
Travelers are expected to respect each other and help each other. Avoid discussing sensitive matters like sex, politics, and religion/caste/race.
Using foul or abusive language, eve-teasing, arguing with fellow travelers/organizer(s), and/or involving in the physical assault will not be accepted and will stand a chance of being deserted by the group then and there.
The event will stand canceled if less than 8 travelers signed up for the trip/trek which will be informed 24 hours before the trip start time.
Every traveler is expected to sign a liability/waiver form given by the organizer(s) after boarding the vehicle. This liability form will discharge Muddie Trails of any unexpected incident like injury/death/theft etc.

Cancellation Policy

80% refund/100% postponement if you inform about your cancellation before 48 hours of the event start time. An email has to be sent to [email protected] to raise a cancellation request.
No refund/postponing is allowed within 48 hours of the event start time whatever is the reason (Health, Accident, Covid, Family crisis, Office issue, or anything else).
No refund/postponing is allowed for partial payment – booking fee – which is done to book your slot.

Muddie Trails may decide to cancel the event if there are less than 8 travelers signed up for the trip/trek.

What if we don’t get the minimum number of people for the trip? We have 2 options in this case: Option 1: Complete refund. Option 2: Switch to any other trip of the same weekend or future weekends. The difference amount will be collected from you or paid back according to the new trip cost.

Cancellation due to external factors

Muddie Trails may have to cancel the event in case of external factors that are beyond our control like Natural Disasters, Extreme Weather Conditions, Red Alerts, Political Disturbances, Bandh/Curfews, Local Issues, Road Blocks, Train cancellations, Covid-19 or any other disease outbreaks etc.

No Refund is allowed.
100% trip amount can be used for any other new trip of the same weekend or future weekends. The difference amount will be collected from you or paid back according to the new trip cost.

The Kudremukh Trek is the perfect weekend getaway from Bengaluru. It is one of the most sought after treks in the Western Ghats. There are a lot of things that not many treks can offer- a wide variety of wildlife, an ample number of waterfalls, vast green grasslands, forest trails, and bamboo shrubs. Situated in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, it is often called the Himalayas of the South. Kudremukh in itself is the third highest peak (6,214 km) and the name literally translates to ‘horse face’ in Kannada as it refers to a particularly picturesque view of a side of the mountain that resembles a horse's face. Covered with lush hills and misty mountains, Kudremukh trek proves to be the perfect mix of adventure and leisure. It is thus suitable for both beginners as well as experienced trekkers. The Kudremukh trekking trail is of 18 km which can be traversed within a day and the best season to visit is the Monsoon or Winter. When it comes to treks in South India, the Kudremukh Trek is of a moderate level difficulty meaning it needs a good fitness level and endurance to successfully undertake this trek. Drive from Bangalore to Mullodi - 332 Kms.

On Friday night at around 7:30 PM, get picked up from common boarding points - Malleshwaram (near KC General Hospital), Rajajinagar (Metro Station - Tata Motors Showroom), Yeshwanthpur (Govardhan Theater) and Jalahalli (Bureau of Indian Standards) in Bangalore. This ensues the overnight journey to reach the base camp of Kudremukh.

The trek begins from Mullodi Village and the approximate trekking distance is 10 Kms one way.

On Saturday, the first day of your trek, we will reach Kudremukh National Park around 06:00 AM. After having a delicious breakfast, we will reach the base camp. It has a full view of the various peaks of Kudremukha National Park along with Somavati river. The trek commences at 09:00 AM, towards the top of Kudremukh Peak which is approximately 11 Kms from the base. It starts with an uphill climb on a muddy path and there are many water streams that pass throughout the trail. There will be a lunch stop at a scenic spot. Once we reach the top of the Kudremukha Peak, enjoy the panoramic view sitting at the top of the hill. The view from up there makes it worth all the adversity of the climb. Then begins the descent around the same trail. We will return to the base camp by around 06:00 PM. Have a sumptuous dinner later and retire for the night.

Drive to nearby falls and head back to Bangalore - 332 Kms.

On Sunday we will have breakfast around 08:00 AM and start our return journey from Kudremukh National Park. As this day marks the end of the trek, we can take a relaxing dip in the cool waters of a nearby waterfall. The return journey will cross different plantations such as coffee and tea, and the beautiful mist covered hills of the Western Ghats. Later, have a self-sponsored lunch on the way. We shall return to Bangalore at around 10:00 PM.

The best seasons to do the Kudremukh trek are the monsoon months of June-August and the winter months of November-February.

Connectivity: What is the cellular network connectivity for this trek?

BSNL Network will be available in Kudremukha town. As Kudremukh is dense in greenery, there won’t be any cellular network inside the forest. Otherwise, all networks are available in Bangalore.

Age limit: What is the minimum & maximum age limit?

The minimum age limit is 9 years. However, minors aged between 9 to 17 should be accompanied by their parents or guardians. If you are above the age of 60, kindly carry a medical certificate from your doctor that deem you fit for adventure activities like trekking.

Nearby attraction: What are the nearby attractions that I can explore?

Before you reach the base camp of Kudremukh, there will be plenty of time to explore the Chikmagalur district. It is surrounded by tall and short peaks, coffee, tea and, spices plantations which give the entire area a nice and rich aroma. There are a few coffee tasting tours, one can undertake and temples which have a splendid architecture such as the shrine of goddess Bhagavathi and the Sri Kalaseshwara temple of Lord Shiva are among the must visit places. Also, the beautiful quaint town of Kasala nearby is worth a visit.

Weather conditions: What will the temperatures be like during this trek?

During Monsoon season, although, the region experiences heavy rain, the climate is pleasant and good for witnessing the best of nature. During Winters season, the weather is very pleasant and the average temperature ranges between 14 and 33 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature even reaches to 10 degrees Celsius. It is the best time to visit Kudremukh.

Transportation will be taken care from Bangalore to Bangalore from common pick up points - Malleshwaram (near KC General Hospital), Rajajinagar (Metro Station - Tata Motors Showroom), Yeshwanthpur (Govardhan Theater) and Jalahalli (Bureau of Indian Standards).

No special documents for Kudremukh trek but do carry at least one ID proof with you. (Aadhar Card, Passport, or Voting ID Card)

Accommodation during the trek will be in tents on a twin sharing basis.

We use four-season Gipfel tents and sleeping bags. If you carry your own sleeping bag, you will get a cashback reward, provided that you inform us as soon as you have booked your trek.

Equipment and facilities: Are there any washroom/toilet facilities on the trek?

Toilet tents will be provided to you on the trek.These are portable toilets tents where a deep pit will be dug. A shovel will be provided inside the tent to cover the waste after you have made your business. You can take a toilet roll inside. Make sure you dig used toilet paper along with the waste. Though water is recommended in place of toilet paper. Please refrain from using wet wipes as they are non-biodegradable. There will be no facility for bathing on the trek. There will be no snow on this trek.

Equipment and facilities: What kind of food will be provided for the trek?

Vegetarian food will be served throughout the trek. The only non-vegetarian item served on our treks are eggs. Our kitchen staff follows a proper menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner which has been designed in order to fulfil the nutritional requirements of the participants. There will be milk, poha, eggs, muesli/corn flakes, bread and butter served for breakfast. Rice or simple roti sabzi will be packed for lunch. In dinner, you will have dal, egg curry or any other vegetarian dish along with rice, roti, and a dessert item. Packed lunch will be provided to you on the days you are trekking. You are requested to carry your own tiffin box and a mug to consume food. The meals consumed on journey and arrival day are not included in our cost.

You can rent trekking shoes, rucksacks and poncho for the trek from us.

No, there is no option to offload your backpack.

Miscellaneous : Who will lead us on the trek?

A team of participant will be led by a course certified trek leader and a local guide. All participants are requested to abide by what their leader says. There will also be a team of kitchen staff and porters on the trek. We maintain 1:8 ratio of trek leader and participants. All our trek leaders and staff have a certified training in first-aid and rescue operation.

Miscellaneous : Is the trekking pole necessary?

No, trekking pole is not necessary.

Miscellaneous : Are there any local stores/shops from where I can shop trekking necessities?

It is recommended that you come prepared with all the stuff. Please do not leave anything for last minute buying.

Miscellaneous : Is it safe for a solo woman traveller to trek in Fixed departures?

Yes, it is absolutely safe for solo woman to travel in fix departures. Women on the trek will be sharing tent with each other. In case you are the only woman on the trek, you will be given a separate tent.

Yes, e-certificates will be given at the end of each trek provided that you completed it. It will bear your name, the trek, and the maximum altitude you achieved on the trek.

The Kudremukh trek is every orophile's dream. Kudremukh trek is through steep hills and valleys. The hills, which bear the brunt of the severe monsoon wind, preclude any tree growth as a result the landscape is covered with grass. The valleys which are tucked in, have reasonable protection from wind and a deep soil profile, as a result of which stunted evergreen forests exist creating a unique microclimate, rich with mosses, orchids, etc. The whole scenery of grassland interspersed with narrow strips of forests provide a fantastic vista for a trekker. The totally fresh air and the climb up and down invigorates the body and soothes the soul. During the trek, one can view and study several wildlife species of plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, insects, etc.

About Kudremukh National Park: Kudremukh National Park is spread partly over the thick hilly forests near the coastal plains on the western portion and the shola vegetation on the Western Ghats uplands, covering parts of 3 districts, viz., Chikmagalur, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada. The Kudremukh peak by which the National Park derived its name, is the highest elevation at 1892 meters.

Special features of Kudremukh National Park (KNP) : KNP is made of steep hills and valleys. Introduction to Kudremukha

Kudremukha, translating to the ‘head of a horse’ in Kannada, is one of the prominent peaks in the Western Ghats. Ranking as the third highest peak in this mountain range, it reaches an elevation of 1892 meters (6207 feet). It claims the second-highest position among Karnataka’s mountains, following Mullayana Giri.

The trekking trail winds through lush valleys and the encompassing hills, offering a journey worth undertaking. The stunning greenery throughout the trek adds to the allure, making the entire experience captivating.

How to Get to Base of Kudremukha?

By Road – Traveling by road is the optimal and most convenient way to reach Kudremukha. Situated in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, the mountain is approximately 320 kilometres away from Bangalore. Due to the unsealed roads, the journey from the Mullodi forest checkpoint to the trek’s base camp requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

While trekking through the national park, keep a vigilant eye out for wildlife. During our hike, we encountered a bison, emphasizing the importance of caution. Maintaining a safe distance from wildlife and avoiding confrontation is crucial, especially with the robust and sizable bison. Exercise extreme care when in their vicinity.

Upon reaching Kalasa, local buses or auto-rickshaws are available to transport you to the mountain base, Mullodi. To access the homestay, which also serves as the base camp for the trek, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is necessary.

For those considering air travel, the nearest international airport is located in Mangalore, approximately 100 kilometres away from Mullodi.

Logistics of Kudremukh a Trek

Starting and Finishing Points : Mullodi village.
Trek to the peak: The round-trip distance from the base camp is approximately 20 to 22 kilometres. The base camp is situated at a homestay in Mullodi village.
Grade: The trek difficulty level is categorized as moderate to difficult. While the trail is reasonably well-defined, it is advisable to hire a guide. This recommendation is primarily due to the abundant wildlife in the area. The trek fee for hiring a guide is approximately INR 1000 per person.

Suitable for : Experienced trekkers.
Best Season : The ideal seasons for trekking in Kudremukha are spring, winter, and summer, spanning from October to May. While trekking might be challenging during the monsoons, the mountains exhibit a breathtaking allure with lush greenery and scenic beauty amid the rains.
The trek must be undertaken between 6 AM and 6 PM, and all trekkers are required to exit the national park range before 6 PM.
Note: Overnight stays within the Kudremukha National Park are prohibited; therefore, you must return to the home stay. A daily limit of 150 people is imposed for trekking. Given the abundant wildlife, exercise caution and stay vigilant for bison or birds during the trek. The base camp is easily accessible via a short jeep ride from the nearest village.

Important Tips

Forest Department Permission : To embark on the Kudremukha trek, acquiring a permit at the Mullodi forest checkpost is essential. A trekking fee of INR 525 is applicable for venturing into the forest on this trek. For the most current and accurate information regarding the trekking fee, it is advisable to check with the forest check post directly.
Light Backpacks: Keep your backpacks lightweight. Tents at the homestay can secure them.
Wildlife Caution: Beware of scorpions and other wildlife. Zip up your backpacks; my friend found a baby scorpion after our trek.
Ample Water: Carry sufficient water for the trek.
Sturdy Footwear: Wear comfortable and sturdy shoes.
Respect Wildlife: Do not disturb or engage with wildlife.
Garbage Disposal: Carry your garbage; do not litter.
Flashlight: Bring a torch in case it gets dark before exiting the national park.
Time Management: Ensure you exit the national park before 6 PM.
Mind Your Steps: Be mindful of where you step.
Extra Socks: Carry an extra pair of socks for unforeseen blisters during the trek.
Day Pack Essentials: Use a small, lightweight day pack for sunscreen, snacks, extra socks, a first-aid kit and water.
Leech Protection: Be prepared for leeches, especially during monsoons. A solution of Dettol (1/4th) and water (3/4th) works best. Leech socks are advisable during the trek.

Trekking Kudremukha by Yourself

Planning a trip to Kudremukha independently is certainly feasible, although it’s recommended to engage a local guide. The local guide charges are typically around INR 1000 per group. The forest department restricts entry to the national park, issuing a limited number of tickets (approximately 150 people). A trekking fee of INR 575 per person is required and should be paid at the forest checkpoint.

Remember to carry a government-issued identification, such as an Aadhar card, that includes your photograph and address for necessary documentation.

Coming under the Chikmagalur District of Karnataka, Kudremukh trek is one of the most exciting treks in this region. It is the third highest peak after Mullayanagiri and Bababudangiri. Absorb the beauty of the Western Ghats as you walk up the trail. Very few people know the fact that the Western Ghats are considered as UNESCO World Heritage Site for the natural beauty and for being an icon of environmental balance. The lush greenery of the hills can never fail to mesmerize a soul.

You'll cross several cascading waterfalls and narrow streams, thick forests with a variety of trees, and the whistling of birds will keep you entertained all throughout. And finally, when you'll reach the peak, the picturesque view from the top and the chilled wind will absolutely blow you out of your mind and make you numb for a few minutes, before you regain your consciousness to feel the enchanting magic of the place. The Forest Department at Kudremukh presently allows only the first 50 persons (on first come first serve basis) to trek to the Kudremukh Peak in a day. This notification has been passed with a view to preserve the forests and promote eco-tourism in the region. In case we fail to obtain the permits, we’ll arrange for an alternate trek.

We always provide you with a 'Tentative Schedule', that'll be followed unless any unavoidable situation arises, whereby we have to make necessary changes to our plans.

Also, note that the speed of every traveler is not the same during treks, hence it's better to maintain a stable & uniform speed so that the group can remain together.

Plan The Unplanned mostly organizes hired vehicles, and there might be a little change in timings, as these vehicles are not regular KSTDC buses, plying always on time!

Certain things, like Weather conditions, wildlife movements, permission changes are not in our hand. In case there's a change in itinerary, we'll inform you about the same. And if a trip gets canceled, we'll provide you with a 100% refund.

Trekking requires a certain level of fitness, and a lot of patience! You'll have to walk for a certain distance, through rough terrains and lush forests, before you end up at the destination. The accommodation will mostly be in the camps or hostels/homestays. If you think you're not fine with that, please do let us know. Also, you'll have to carry your own luggage and there will be no porters.

We can't guarantee a restroom everywhere, so you need to be flexible with that as well. That's one fun part of treks! But we do provide basic facilities for our trekkers to freshen up - no worries on that note!

While utilizing campsite all trekkers have to be responsible for cleaning the place (after and before using. All our events are built on Teamwork methodology. We would request you to follow our trek leads, as they are great coordinators and well versed with the routes. Also, it's fun to pitch tents, collect firewood from the forest, cook food, etc.

Be open to sleeping under the stars, when required! It'll definitely be an amazing experience.

We, as an organization, shall be under no liability whatsoever in respect of any loss or damage arising directly or indirectly out of the decline of authorization for any Transaction, on Account of the Cardholder having exceeded the preset limit mutually agreed by us with our acquiring bank from time to time.

Cancellations on the day of departure or a day prior due to work/family emergencies, health issues etc. would not be entertained and no refund or transfer to further dates shall be allowed for the same.

Additional charges would be deducted (based on from where you booked) if you cancel the trek at any given date (along with the scenario described above), as payment gateway/event listing charges.

Transfer of Dates Policy

If you wish to shift your date of booking due to any unforeseen circumstances, the same should be intimated to us not less than 72 hours before the date of the event. (Not valid for group or corporate bookings)

Only one transfer per booking shall be permitted. Your booking shall stand cancelled if you fail to join the event on the transferred dates.

Once the option of data transfer is made, the booking amount shall be held as credits with us and in no case will a refund be made further on.

Day 0 – Overnight Journey to Kudremukh

Begin your overnight journey to Kudermukh.

Day 1 – Begin the Kudremukh Trek

On the first day of your Kudremukh trek you will reach homestay around 06:00 AM.
After having breakfast, we will reach the base camp.
From homestay to base camp we do a Jeep ride (Included in our package)
By 08:00 AM, we will start trekking to the top of Kudremukh Peak which is approx 22 KM both the ways.
En route to the peak, have lunch in the midway.
Once we reach the top, all of us can enjoy the relishing view of the serenity the peak has to offer.
Return to the base camp around 06:00 PM after a trek to Kudremukh.
Enjoy the bonfire.
Have the lip-smacking dinner and retire for the night.

Day 2 – Sightseeing | End of Trek

On Day 2, around 08:00 AM, you will grab a breakfast.
Samse Tea Estate.
Kalsa Hanging bridge.
Have a self-sponsored lunch on the way back from the Kudremukh trek.

Kudremukh Trek starts from the a forest check post of small village – Mullodi Hills, which is located at 96km in the district of Chikmangalur, ie. just 10km away from the hub Kalasa. Its takes an overnight journey of 335km from Bangalore to reach here. The word “Kudremukh” means ” horse face” in local Kannada Language. The name is given to the mountain for its resemblance to the face of a Pony. Kudremukh Trek includes dense forest of trees with water steams flowing at its every corner. The Trek is paradise for trekkers from bangalore and the peak is the third highest peak of Karnataka.

The beauty of Kudremukh Trek enhances during monsoon and post-monsoon , The view from the peak looks no less than a green carpet of trees. Kudremukh is also kown as mini Scotland of India.

It is a perfect trekking spot to venture on from Bangalore, which makes it most advantageous goal for weekend escapes. Natural grasslands and dense Shola forests make the greenery of these undulating hills eye-catching.

Important Notice:

The Forest Permission has changed for Kudremukh trek. Only 50 Participants are allowed in the mountain range in a Day to Trek. Although we try our best to gain the permission, sometimes it happens that we do not get permission from the forest department. The decision of acceptance and rejection from DF (Department of Forest) happens at the start point check post of the trek based on the count.

If in case we do not reach the check post in time to gain permission for Kudremukh Trek, nature walkers would try to do the trek on Next Day or Arrange another beautiful trek like Kurinjal or Bavikonda from the same region. We do not wish to change our plan at any cost but considering DF we do not own any control over the national park region.

Had an amazing time at Kudremukh trekking the Bhavikonda trail! As I sit back and recall , it looks like the last weekend passed with a blink of an eye. It all started with few known faces but as the journey continued all became familiar, if not by names at least by the adjectives. Kudremukh trek was the perfect weekend trip. It was a well deserved break from our stressful busy routine. It was beyond my imagination of how nature walkers would organise this trip for us. We literally had nothing to do except enjoy the whole weekend. The views from the peak was overwhelming😘. Kudos to Hemanth😎 and Shailesh😎 and the forest official guide😎 for an amazing trek and for keeping us safe every minute. Also there were lot of fun surprises for us like campfire which was such a relief for our sore feet after long and exhausting trek, and visiting belur temple( the big surprise) , and the ecstatic dancing in the bus… Also nature walkers is like a platform for meeting new people with similar interests. None of the other members were in my age group, but not even for a minute I felt like I was left out. I went to kudremukh with a bunch of strangers and we all came back as a family. What made this trek special to me wasn’t the well planned itenary, or the light and yummy food at the homestay, or the scenic beauty of Kudremukh. These things were perfect and flawless so sure need to acknowledge these as well. What made it special is the attention which Hemant and Shailesh gave to each and every detail and to each and every trekker. Every moment of the trip is something to remember, weather it was the initial intro during our journey to the base, or our ride back home where we danced all the way. Sad start but happy ending.

We couldnot get the pass for the Kudremukh trek , so I was certainly disheartened. Having said that we went to an alternate trek of Bavikunda, which is quite easy and provides a good panoramic view at the top.

The trek coordinators handeled the situation gracefully and there was no chaos during change of plans.

The visit to a local waterfalls area was probably the best thing that have happened in the journey.

I have been to enough trips and treks to say that ‘abhilash’ (the trek coordinator) kept eberyone going and he gave his cent percent involvement in the trip to make it worth for everyone else.

It was a good trip at the end.

Tesla Cybertruck

Tesla cybertruck ramp is impressive, but it comes at a cost.

Tesla appears to be making significant progress in its Cybertruck production ramp, but it is coming at a cost.

The automaker is about to finish its first full quarter of Cybertruck production, and it looks like it has made some great progress.

It has been hard to track Cybertruck production, and drone flyovers have been the primary way to track it.

A new drone flyover of Tesla Gigafactory Texas by Brad Sloan showed hundreds of Cybertrucks at multiple locations around the factory, including some being loaded on trucks for deliveries.

It looks like Tesla is getting closer to producing 1,000 Cybertrucks per week, which would be an impressive ramp for the first quarter of production.

But volume is one thing. Quality is another.

Tesla is having issues with its early Cybertruck units, which is not something completely unusual for a new vehicle program

Electrek has talked to two recent Cybertruck buyers who had complete vehicle failures in their first week of ownership. They both had the rear motor fail.

They were told by Tesla service that it is a fairly common problem that is creating a backlog in parts. The customers were told that it would be a few weeks before Tesla could perform the repairs.

Even the Cybertruck that MKBHD reviewed had a significant door gap defect, which CEO Elon Musk confirmed was a known issue:

Some Cybertruck owners have questioned the statement that it is an “easy fix” or at least that it will result in a quick experience at service centers as several Cybertruck owners report that their vehicles are in service for longer than in their garages.

Now, I’m no hater. It is fairly normal for any vehicle program, from any automaker, to have issues early in the production process, but I think it’s also fair to say that Tesla, due to its nature, has more issues.
