The Ultimate Guide to Costa Navarino, Greece

The omega-shaped Voidokilia Beach is one of the beautiful spots near Costa Navarino

Costa Navarino is a luxury resort destination in the Messinia region, on the southwestern coast of the Peloponnese, Greece . If you are planning a trip to the Peloponnese, then follow our guide on the top things to do in Costa Navarino, along with the best places to stay here, bookable via Culture Trip.

Travellers choose the area because it enjoys Messinia’s year-round pleasant temperatures and very little rain during the high season. The resort is surrounded by striking beautiful landscapes composed of tropical blue waters, lush hills and plenty to discover. With a holistic approach to sustainable tourism, Costa Navarino bills itself as the first high-end, eco-friendly destination in the Mediterranean.

Things to do in Costa Navarino

Messinia is a magnificent region to kick off an authentic Greek adventure. The area features a unique landscape, ancient cities and archaeological sites, picturesque architecture, epic beaches and delicious examples of Greek cuisine.

When looking for things to do in the area, starting with the local cuisine is always a great idea – olives, oranges, sage, thyme, wild greens, cheese and wine are just a few of the staples you can taste during a food tour in the area.

Don’t miss the beautiful beach in Voidokilia

Costa Navarino hosts one of the most beautiful turquoise-water beaches in Voidokilia. This half-moon-shaped shore offers the perfect backdrop for swimming and relaxing – but be aware that there are no facilities on site, so pack everything you need to spend the day.

Adventurous hiking and mountain biking are other popular activities. Most local resorts offer bike rental services and biking tours to explore the hills and valleys – and a very rare wetland habitat, Gialova Lagoon, which is a paradise for birdwatching.

The Neokastro fortress is worth exploring

If you prefer a different kind of sport, then check out two of Europe’s best golf courses, or learn everything about this sport at the Navarino Golf Academy. Alternatively, if you’re more of a history fan, then explore historic Messinia. Here, you can explore the archaeological treasures found in the waters offshore at the Ottoman Neokastro fortress or visit the nearby old town. With more time to spare, you can embark on an hour and a half trip to Olympia – the birthplace of the Olympic Games.

Places to stay in Costa Navarino

There are plenty of high-end accommodation options in Costa Navarino, meaning you’ll be spoiled for choice – these are some of the best places to stay in the area, bookable via Culture Trip.

1. Camvillia Resort

63059a39

Camvillia is a five-star boutique resort standing above one of the most beautiful locations in Messinia. The complex features independent houses built respecting the local traditional architecture, along with private pools and top-notch service – surrounded by a natural environment of green olive groves.

2. Hotel Artina Nuovo

97352bb8

Artina Nuovo Hotel is located in the village of Marathopoli, just metres from the sea. The rooms and apartments are spacious and incredibly comfortable, featuring fully furnished balconies with imposing views of the Ionian Sea.

3. Hotel Lagouvardos Village

d50bd5e6

A unique place to enjoy authentic Greek hospitality, Lagouvardos Village is a seven-building complex with elegant apartments that are comfortable and stylishly furnished, with everything you need for a perfect stay.

Best places to eat in Costa Navarino

Gastronomy is a serious endeavour in the Peloponnese – a region that features the highest quantity of PDO products in Greece, such as Kalamata olives or the famed red Agiorgitiko wine.

Deroko is a fine dining restaurant on the seafront in Gialova. Besides its romantic atmosphere, the restaurant offers familiar flavours rooted in Greek cuisine with a touch of modern elegance on a menu that highlights the best of the local produce.

Courtesy of Deroko

Onuki is an innovative and unique proposal. This Japanese restaurant is within the Romanos Costa Navarino Resort, and it serves excellent dishes paired with amazing views of the area. When looking for a beach restaurant, a great option is Kookoonari, in Pylos. Right by the sea, the restaurant offers a selection of fresh fish and a seafood menu with rather affordable prices.

The best time to visit Costa Navarino

Home to mild Mediterranean weather, Costa Navarino enjoys a fairly long warm season. Summers are long and hot – therefore, the area is at its best between May and September. If you’re looking for the hottest time of the year to visit, then July and August feature the warmest air temperatures – while the sea temperature is the highest during September.

Getting to Costa Navarino

There are many different ways to get to Costa Navarino – the area can be easily reached from many European cities with a direct flight into Kalamata International Airport, just a short drive from Costa Navarino. It’s also possible to get to Costa Navarino with a private transfer from Athens (270km/168mi) or the International Port of Patras (200km/120mi), which receives frequent ferries and cruise ships from Italy.

A Quick Guide to Costa Navarino, Greece

Located on the southwest coast of the Peloponnese, Costa Navarino is a quiet and undiscovered part of Greece. Tourism here is low-key but is becoming increasingly well-known as a luxury hotspot .

Costa Navarino means Navarino Coast and is famous for the Battle of Navarino in 1827 which took place in its namesake bay close to Pylos. These days Costa Navarino, as well as the wider Messinia region, is quiet and rural with miles of olive groves, sleepy harbour towns, and an unspoiled coastline.

Costa Navarino is on the opposite side of the country to Greece’s well-trodden tourist trail and the only big-name attraction in the area is Voidokilia, frequently named one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece . It’s not the kind of place that attracts bucket-list tourists who just want to check destinations off a list, but those who want to feel in tune with a destination and its nature and history.

The nearest city is Kalamata (around a 1-hour drive) which has a population of just 75,000, so it’s an ideal part of the country to visit if you don’t want to be fighting for space on the beach. That said, Voidokilia does get unsurprisingly busy in the summer, but most of the time the vibe is undeniably tranquil.

I must admit that Messinia wasn’t really on my radar before, due to its lack of big-name sights, but now I’m convinced it’s only of the best secret destinations in Greece . I’m constantly on the lookout for quiet and classy beach resorts to recommend to UK friends that have a direct flight + short transfer. Add in sandy beaches and you have the holy grail! It’s only a matter of time before word is out.

Voidokilia beach.

How to get to Costa Navarino

Costa Navarino is a short drive (less than one hour) from Kalamata airport which may be small but receives international flights throughout the summer (including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Vienna, and Israel). An expansion is in the works but is still a few years off.

Athens is a three-hour drive along good roads which can bypass the capital and take you directly to the airport, so there is no need to get entangled with city traffic when renting a car.

Small cruise ships dock at Kalamata Port, and there’s a yacht marina at Pylos.

The Costa Navarino Resort Complex

Costa Navarino refers to the coastline and also specifically to a complex of luxury resort hotels . It gets a bit confusing what’s what and where so I’ll try my best to explain here.

Full disclosure – I was invited to stay at Westin Resort Costa Navarino on a press trip.

Costa Navarino is the name for the overall complex with 4 5-star resorts and facilities spread out across 5 different sites which are a short drive from each other:

Elegant sofa in the lobby at The Romanos.

Navarino Dunes

Navarino Dunes was the first and original Costa Navarino site and it’s located a 15-minute drive north of Voidoikilia Beach and Gialova Lagoon. It’s home to:

  • The Westin Resort Costa Navarino – a luxury family resort with a focus on sports and wellness
  • The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort – aimed at couples and honeymooners
  • The Dunes golf course
  • 20 bars/cafes/restaurants
  • Anazoe spa and thalassotherapy centre
  • fitness centre including a Mouratoglou Tennis Centre, indoor climbing, bowling, and basketball
  • 1km sandy beach

W Costa Navarino.

Navarino Waterfront

Navarino Waterfront is located right within Navarino Bay, a short drive south along the coast from Gialova. It faces the uninhabited Sphacteria island which makes for stunning sunsets.

  • home to the W Costa Navarino Hotel – a contemporary lifestyle resort (12+)
  • Parelia beach club
  • 250m sandy beach
  • watersports centre
  • Navarino Agora (opening 2023) – a modern marketplace with restaurants, street food, shops, and an open-air cinema, joining Navarino Waterfront and Navarino Bay

W Costa Navarino pool at sunset.

Navarino Bay

Navarino Bay is located just south of Navarino Waterfront, in fact, the two areas are separated by a small stream which is home to the Agora.

  • ultra-luxury, home to the earth-sheltered Mandarin Oriental (opening August 2023)
  • The Bay Golf Course

Navarino Hills

Navarino Hills is a golf resort with 2 golf courses (designed by José Marίa Olazábal) – The Hills Course and the International Olympic Academy Golf Course .

Sustainability champion

The Costa Navarino project was founded by Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos who wanted to put his home on the tourist map but also protect the region’s natural environment and heritage. It’s an ambitious development aiming to be the premier destination in Greece for luxury, golf, and also for sustainability.

Sustainability is woven into Costa Navarino as a guiding principle. It has an extensive recycling and composting programme. Wastewater is also recycled and used for irrigation. Bioclimatic principles and local materials are deployed in the buildings.

At Navarino Dunes, only 10% of the land is built on so there’s plenty of lush landscaping and native plants, birdsong and dragonflies.

It’s also home to the Navarino Environmental Observatory , an on-site climate and environment research station in collaboration with the private and academic sectors. Amongst many other things, it monitors changes at the nearby Gialova Lagoon which is an important (and fragile) wetlands ecosystem.

The beach at Navarino Dunes is a nesting ground for Caretta caretta turtles and Costa Navarino works with Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, to map and protect the nests. The hotels here are built back from the beach (which is also off-limits at night) so that the hatchlings aren’t disturbed by the light. There are some sea-view rooms but if that’s your preference then look at the W or the Mandarin Oriental instead.

There’s even a Pet Community shelter that looks after stray cats and dogs as well as running a sterilisation programme. Visitors can pop in during the week to pet the animals, and you can even adopt if you fall in love (you have been warned!).

Private plunge pool at Westin Resort Costa Navarino.

When is the best time to visit?

With its emphasis on sporting activities and wellness facilities, Costa Navarino aims to be a year-round destination – particularly Navarino Hills. Private pools are heated.

Not all facilities are open year-round though so it’s best to get in touch with your chosen hotel to check if there is something specific you’d like to use.

Castle walls and bridge at Methoni Castle.

What else is in the area?

The Messinia region might not have lots of well-known attractions but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see or do! In fact, I think it has an ideal combination of lush rural landscapes, scenic fishing towns and villages (with great food), and historic sites.

If you’re looking for nightlife it’s not the best place for you. Messinia is sleepy. It’s all about the good life here – a spot of sightseeing, long lazy seafood lunches, and glorious swims in the Ionian Sea.

Here’s what to see in the wider area:

Voidokilia Beach – a perfect horseshoe-shaped beach of fine golden sand. It’s unorganised (no sunbeds, cafes or loos) so bring your own water and snacks and don’t forget to take all your litter with you. You can hike to Nestor’s Cave and Castle on one side, and the Mycenaen Tomb of Thasymedes on the other side (plus a short hike to a secret beach called Glossa ). I visited on a guided e-bike tour from the Westin Resort – great fun!

Gialova Lagoon – a unique wetlands lagoon which is an important staging post for migratory birds in spring and autumn (including flamingos). It’s at the far end of Navarino Bay, with Voidokilia on its other flank, so you can explore both in one go. Renting a bike or e-bike is ideal. At Gialova village there’s a small beach with a pleasant cluster of seafront eateries and amenities.

Islands – there are a number of uninhabited islands off the Messinian coast, perfect for a boat trip. Sphacteria is the closest, it’s on the other side of Navarino Bay and is easy to boat out to (there’s a watersports centre at Navarino Bay). For a longer trip, there’s also Sapientza, Schiza, and Venetiko.

Methoni Castle is a must-see – it’s one of the best-preserved castles in Greece and you might even have it all to yourself (unless your timing coincides with a school group of course). There’s also a village here with a few tavernas and a small beach.

Pylos – Pylos is the Greek name for Navarino and understandably you’ll find an impressive Castle and Archaeological Museum here given its history. But it’s also the best place for a slice of local life – Pylos is a picturesque harbour town with seafront restaurants, a marina, and an atmospheric town square shaded by enormous plane trees.

Waterfalls – the most famous falls in the area are at Polylimnio but there are also nearer ones at Stenosia and Kamalaris .

Ancient Messene – for some reason the ruins of Ancient Messene are not that well-known compared to other sites in the Peloponnese, perhaps because they were only recently excavated. But the site is surprisingly large and well-preserved. It’s northwest of Kalamata but well worth a detour if you have a car.

Sailing – the southwest Peloponnese is a quiet sailing ground where you won’t be jostling for an anchorage, in contrast with its crowded neighbours further up the Ionian Coast. I spent a great day at sea on the lovely Alegria , a boutique crewed catamaran ( hosted ), and can highly recommend it as a way to see the area. Alegria is based at Kalamata and you can sail west to Messinia or southeast to Mani depending on the conditions and your preferences (or further afield if you have time!). The crew are lovely. Say hello from The Mediterranean Traveller if you see them.

If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to Costa Navarino’s 5-star hotels, have a look for accommodation around Gialova or Pylos. Prices in the area are still very reasonable.

Costa Navarino Greece: An Ultimate Holiday Destination in Messinia

There are a few destination in the world competing for the top luxury destination status, Costa Navarino Greece is one of them. A destination of its own, the Costa Navarino  in the region of Messinia in southwest Peloponnese has gained world-class recognition as one of the most exclusive luxury resorts in the Mediterranean, and rightly so. An epitome of sophisticated hospitality, the core values at this luxury resort trace back to antiquity, and to the place of Palace of Nestor and his unique “xenia” — the generous hospitality towards strangers which Homer so vividly describes in the Odyssey. And so the legacy continues here to this day, where guests coming to Costa Navarino arrive as strangers but leave as friends and their return always feels like a sweet homecoming.

The Story of Costa Navarino Greece

Once upon a time there was a man who loved his homeland so much that he envisioned that one day he would turn this region into a world-class tourism destination — and so he did. In the mid-1980s the late Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos slowly started to acquire land around Messinia — with the dream that the locals would have the opportunity to remain in their homeland. Captain Vassilis had a great passion for the environment and as such the whole resort is a sustainable destination that wonderfully protects the environment and its inhabitants. He was a man of great vision and a loving heart — and this is felt in everything that happens here at Costa Navarino. Nothing is truly left to chance.

The Navarino Dunes resort complex spans across 130 hectares of land and is home to two 5-star luxury hotels: The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort and The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino. Among the world-class facilities are the 4,000 m2 Spa & Thalassotherapy Center – Anazoe Spa, the Dunes Course as well as over 20 restaurants and bars.

My Stay at The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino

The Health and Safety Measures at Costa Navarino

The Costa Navarino has fully integrated the heath and safety measures required by the World Health Organisation and the Greek authorities in their day to day operations. I was sent all the procedures that the resort undertook prior to my check-in. Costa Navarino is also obliged to follow the “Commitment to Cleanliness” innovative system developed by Marriott International.

The room complied with all the recent health and safety protocols and there was a hygiene set with hand-sanitiser and mask in the room. The mini-bars are not stocked based on the new regulations.

All the restaurants and bars at the resort have outdoor seating which means that guests can feel more safe. The breakfast area was mapped out according to guest coming in, one way and going out the other way.

The staff would serve everything that you liked on your plate without coming in close contact with the buffet.

Facilities and Activities

The zen inspired gardens are dotted with olive trees and inviting hammocks which surround the resort’s main pool. Here, guests can enjoy a plethora of relaxing activities and a vast selection of beauty treatments at the renowned Anazoe Spa.

For those who are looking for a more action packed holiday can opt for a game of tennis or golf (2 world-class signature golf-courses). In your downtime visit the resort’s cutting edge indoor Sports & Entertainment Centre where you can dive into fun activities like basketball, bowling, wall climbing, soccer, just to name a few.

manessis travel costa navarino

The area surrounding the Costa Navarino Resort is ideal for exploration, making it a perfect activity to explore the region on two wheels with a professional guide. If you feel like doing absolutely nothing, the resort’s private beach is as inviting as everything else — spend the day soaking in the suns rays and enjoy a refreshing swim in the blue waters of the Navarino Bay.

Messenia’s underwater world is also fabulous, whether you know how to scuba dive or looking to acquire a new set of skill — there is a PADI certified school available on the resort’s premises. Explore the beauty of the underwater world either on a snorkelling or a scuba diving expedition.

The Agora Square

The Agora square at the Navarino Dunes resort is a dedicated area that is lined with restaurants, boutiques, a chapel and a theatre. This is the   resort’s main meeting point during the evening hours as the sun begins to set, guests gather here to enjoy a leisurely evening.

This charming “village-style” square was also used to film scenes from Before Midnight (2013) starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.

Dining and Wining at Navarino Dunes

Gourmands will be spoiled for choice with a grand selection of 20 restaurants, bars, lounges and pool bars on property. The exclusive restaurants with award-winning chefs led by Executive Chef Thanasis Karathanasis, who is the heart and soul of the dining experience at the resort, boast a fantastic array of international cuisines and flavors. The delectable dishes are prepared with fresh, organically grown ingredients sourced from the resort’s gardens.

Whether you are looking to indulge on fresh seafood delicacies, simple Greek flavors or exquisite Middle Eastern delights — your taste buds are in for a real treat.   From American-style diner to the seafront Barbouni with the most creative and Instagram worthy flowing roof, your holiday dining experience will most definitely be one-of-a-kind.

manessis travel costa navarino

During our stay we had a fantastic dinner at the Flame Restaurant overlooking the Golf Dunes, renowned for its fine selection of locally sourced meats and fresh vegetables.  Chef Kyriakos Plevritis and his team prepared a wonderful selection of starters which included beef tartare, infused with fresh herbs, a delightful Greek salad and a bountiful green salad with sweet peach and caramelised walnuts.

manessis travel costa navarino

For main course we were served with a platter of lamb chops, roasted chicken and perfectly grilled medium-rare stake, accompanied by a selection of sauces, fresh fries and sweet potatoes, as well as grilled vegetables.

If you are a fan of risotto don’t miss the Greek version of delicate goat served with trahanas (Greek version of pasta made from cracked wheat) mixed with a hint of carrots and a touch of yogurt.

manessis travel costa navarino

The dreamy setting of Costa Navarino Greece will make you want to stay here forever. It’s no wonder why so many celebs choose to holiday here, the resort is designed for absolute seclusion and relaxation. Whether you are looking to stay a few nights or weeks, there is one guarantee — you will never get bored.

Things to see around Costa Navarino

manessis travel costa navarino

Palace of Nestor

The area surrounding Costa Navarino is blessed with remarkable natural, historical and cultural beauty making it a perfect destination to visit all year round. Messenia is home to Gialova lagoon, one of the most important wetlands in Europe, with hundreds of migratory birds stopping here in spring and in autumn with the pristine Voidokilia Beach   — shaped like a semi-circle protected by Natura 2000. Mentions of this bay were referred to in Homer’s Odyssey — as a place where King Nestor used it as a port in ancient times. Speaking of palaces, the remains of Nestor’s grand Palace are only a short drive from Costa Navarino Resort — where you can delve deeper into the fascinating history of this blessed land and admire the soaring views of the Messinian Gulf.

manessis travel costa navarino

Messinia’s labyrinth like roads that pass through endless olive tree groves are great for driving exploration. The natural landscape is blessed with several famous waterfalls — such as the Polilimnio (the emerald lakes). The region is also home to several notable fortified castles (Pylos, Methoni and Koroni) — which will make your days here rather exciting. Peloponnese is a very exciting destination, come and experience it for yourselves.

How to get to Costa Navarino

Costa Navarino is easily connected to the Kalamata International Airport with direct flights from most European cities. Alternatively you can arrive to Athens International Airport (270 km) or the port of Partas (200km) which is easily connected with ferry routes to Italy.

I Stayed in Greece's First Mandarin Oriental Hotel — Here's What It Was Like

In a quiet corner of mainland Greece, a glamorous new resort offers access to extraordinary treasures, both natural and archaeological.

Margarita Nikitaki

When Petros Themelis first visited the ruins of Ancient Messene in 1986, there wasn’t much to see: only a few broken columns, strewn around the vineyards and olive groves, and some of the colossal foundations of the city’s fourth-century B.C. fortifications. Over the intervening millennia, whole sections of the city walls had been carted away for use in other buildings. Farmers had wrenched the metal from monuments to make tools and used broken statues and epigraphs to build walls to protect their flocks and crops. Gradually, a city that had flourished for 800 years was turned into a de facto quarry, then covered with earth and used as farmland.

Widely acknowledged as a leading archaeologist of his generation, Themelis had already worked on some of Greece’s most famous ruins: the palace of Vergina, the sanctuary at Delphi, the stadium of ancient Olympia. Ancient Messene must have seemed like a backwater in comparison — a waterlogged valley in the southwestern Peloponnese , huddled against the slopes of Mount Ithomi. But as Themelis dug deeper, an incredibly sophisticated settlement came to light, just as the second-century A.D. travel writer Pausanias had described it.

Related: The 100 Best New Hotels of the Year

Right around the time Themelis was beginning his dig, 40 miles to the south a very different type of project was breaking ground — one that would also alter the fate of this often overlooked region. There, a local shipowner was quietly laying the foundations for the most ambitious luxury tourism development in Greece. He gradually bought up huge parcels of coastal land in Messinia, with a master plan to create a modern landmark of a very different kind.

Though I grew up in Greece, I had never been to Messene. So I was totally blown away by the scale, splendor, and masterful reconstruction of the 2,500-year-old city that stretched before me as I stood on the veranda of the only taverna in Ithomi, a sweet village shaped like an amphitheater overlooking the monuments.

Over the course of four decades, I learned, Themelis revealed and restored a city that was said to be larger than ancient Athens. The egalitarian urban plan included an amphitheater, a stadium, a gymnasium, a wrestling ring, a marketplace with colonnaded galleries, bathhouses, fountains, temples and sanctuaries, and an assembly hall where the city council deliberated. Today, the sheer ambition of the place is heightened by the remoteness of the setting — a landscape of hills in every conceivable shade of green, receding to the horizon.

You can almost hear the roar of the crowds in the marble bleachers, smell the olive oil that wrestlers rubbed over their bodies until they glistened, picture the mosaic artists laying the intricate floors stone by stone, imagine the incense smoke from pyres where Pausanias witnessed “burnt offerings of every kind of living creature, thrusting into the flames not only cattle and goats but finally birds as well.” (Occasionally, when site-specific performances take place, visitors really can see artists at work and hear live music reverberating off the columns.)

When I visited last September, only a handful of people were rambling among the ruins. That week, the Greek government had limited the number of visitors at the Acropolis in Athens to 20,000 per day. It is extraordinary that Ancient Messene is so little known — just as it is hard to conceive that 40 years ago, it was nothing but muddy fields. Countless archaeological digs in Greece progress in slow fits and starts because of funding and staffing issues. Themelis, who died in October, was undaunted by such obstacles. First, he persuaded the state and other entities to buy land on and around the archaeological site from private owners. Then he secured European Union funding and recruited local farmers and craftsmen to supplement his small team of archaeologists and conservators.

Themelis also reached out to benefactors to sponsor the excavations. One of those supporters was Vassilis Constantakopoulos, a self-made tycoon who went to sea at the age of 18 on an unpaid internship and ended up founding the largest private cargo-shipping company in the world. “Captain Vassilis,” as he is affectionately known, remained deeply committed to his homeland of Messinia, an agricultural region of the Peloponnese that’s known for its kalamata olives.

Related: This Abandoned Winery in Greece Is Now a Luxury Resort

A lifelong environmental activist, Constantakopoulos formulated a plan to transform the region into a model for sustainable tourism. Starting in the mid 1980s, he slowly bought up almost 2,500 acres of land. His dream was not simply to create a beach resort or a playground for his other passion, golf; it was to regenerate the whole of Messinia through investment, vocational training, and a philanthropic foundation. The name of this new coastal development was Costa Navarino.

The first phase of this $1 billion project, Navarino Dunes, launched in 2010 with two large but low-slung hotels, a spa that uses olive oil in its treatments, and an 18-hole golf course. When I stayed there during the opening season, I was struck by how cleverly the construction blended into the shoreline, even though the highly polished atmosphere within the complex at times felt at odds with the rural, rough-around-the-edges surroundings. (At that time, tourism had barely made a dent in the silvery olive groves and golden dunes of the wider region.) “This is Avatar in Greece — paradise not yet found,” the golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. told me on that visit. “My golf course will be like walking into a Monet painting.”

Fast-forward 13 years and surprisingly little has changed. Campers and pickup trucks still outnumber bus tours on the roads, and the clack of backgammon still beats time in shady village squares. Plenty of beaches are still blissfully lounger-free, and many locals still depend, at least partly, on Messinia’s 15 million olive trees for their livelihoods.

However, a lot has happened at Costa Navarino. New hotels, golf courses, and recreational facilities have sprouted along the coastline, including the impetus for my return visit: Greece’s first Mandarin Oriental , the newest star in the constellation. As I alighted at the Mandarin’s curvaceous entrance, a handsome trio in straw hats and linens ushered me into a lobby with a profusion of plants, art books, and plump cocktail chairs. Floor-to-ceiling windows drew my eye toward a terrace poised above the glassy disk of Navarino Bay, one of Greece’s largest natural harbors. The world’s last naval battle fought with sailing ships took place there in 1827 — a turning point in the Greek War of Independence — but today, only a pair of paddleboarders rippled the water.

All 99 suites and villas at the Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino, have head-on views of the bay. Slotted into the hillside in rippling rows, the stone-and-cement buildings have rounded edges and “green roofs” covered with plants. Electric bikes and buggies purred up and down the lavender-scented paths to Ormos Beach Club, where futuristic floats were aligned in two sinuous pools and ranks of loungers were lined up in perfect symmetry on the raked sand. The international staff seemed to be everywhere all at once — refilling my dispenser of complimentary sunscreen, mixing me a peach daiquiri slushy, proffering a towel after I emerged from a dip off the jetty.

From the water, it looked like a fleet of small spaceships had landed, but inside, the rooms felt like warm, silky cocoons. Rugs inspired by folk costumes, vintage engravings and textiles, and books related to the history and culture of the Peloponnese gave my villa a sense of place. But the true flavor of Messinia came from the kitchen. “I try to source products from within a thirty-mile radius,” said Bertrand Valegeas, the burly, smiley executive chef, as he talked me through all 10 dishes on the breakfast paramana — an upscale take on the meze tray brought to the table in traditional tavernas that lets diners pick whatever tickles their fancy.

It required enormous restraint not to take everything: cold cuts with pickled okra, sheep-milk yogurt that tasted like whipped cream, warm pies, and irresistible petit fours. This sweet-and-savory smorgasbord appeared before I’d even glanced at the à la carte options, which included a sensational Greek spin on eggs Florentine with spanakopita stuffing and a feta-dill hollandaise.

Related: The Best Greek Islands to Visit, and Where to Stay on Them

After an afternoon of guided meditation and a meridian alignment in the spa, dinner at the flagship restaurant, Oliviera, was an elevated riff on Greek cuisine. Stuffed tomatoes had been transformed into a risotto swirled with smoked sfela, a local cheese made of sheep and goat milk cured in brine, and sardines swaddled in vine leaves and dotted with ouzo jelly. Even the cocktails, mixed tableside, had a Greek twist — a dash of tsipouro (Greece’s answer to grappa) in the martini or a feta emulsion in the Bloody Mary.

Guests at the Mandarin Oriental can make use of a dizzying range of facilities and activities across Costa Navarino’s properties — they can eat Peruvian or Japanese, hit up an escape room or open-air cinema, try yoga or yachting, wing foiling or wakeboarding. But the truly authentic side of Greece will only come into focus when they venture beyond the rarefied bubble of the resort.

For those excited by history, Messinia is a thrill a minute: Neolithic settlements, Mycenaean palaces, classical temples, Byzantine churches, medieval castles, and Ottoman fortresses are scattered all around. The stones that made up the city walls of Ancient Messene were used to construct the seaside garrisons of Pylos, Methoni, and Koroni, a trio of pleasantly unspoiled towns, each guarded by its own heavily fortified castle. My favorite was Koroni, where everything from the flowerpots to the electricity meters in the lopsided alleys had been painted in bright colors. Real life seemed to take precedence over the trappings of tourism there. Within the castle’s walls are whitewashed cottages, a cemetery, and a nunnery — all but the cemetery still inhabited by living souls. Dinky wooden fishing boats supply the lively waterfront restaurants, but the thing to order is the crispy roast suckling pig at Café Synantisi, which has been a local hangout for generations.

Sprinkled with sea salt and slick with fruity olive oil, the tomatoes had been sun-ripened in the garden below the taverna’s terrace, which seemed to float above the ruins of Ancient Messene.

From the Mandarin Oriental, it’s an easy bicycle ride past the seaside strip of Gialova (worth a detour only for the excellent Anama restaurant) and the tantalizing sliver of Golden Beach. The coastal road peters out at a footpath, which follows the ragged cliffs up to the overgrown remains of a 13th-century fortress. I clambered over the ramparts and was suddenly teetering above Messinia’s most famous pinup: the perfect semicircle of Voidokilia Beach. The photogenic bay backs onto the Gialova lagoon, a habitat for hundreds of species of birds, with hiking and biking trails threaded through the reeds.

Messinia is a habitat for hundreds of species of flora and fauna. “This biodiversity is very beneficial for our olive trees,” said Cristina Stribacu as we sniffed and swilled a selection of olive oils in the Mandarin Oriental’s Three Admirals Lounge. Fizzing with energy, Stribacu has won multiple awards for her extra-virgin Liá olive oil, extracted from the fruit of ancestral groves around Filiatra, a coastal town about 20 miles north of the resort. She and her brother Konstantinos are among a small group of young farmers hoping to revive the industry (most farmers in the region are well into their sixties). “I worry about who will produce our food ten years from now,” Stribacu said. “Smart, regenerative farming is very different from what our mom and dad did. Agriculture is also about entrepreneurship now. Otherwise, it’s not sustainable.”

It’s an idea that circles back to Constantakopoulos’s original vision: to regenerate Messinia by preserving what has been there for generations, while creating new prospects for nearby communities. To this end, his charitable foundation has cofounded an agricultural entrepreneurship center to support the future of Messinian farming. One of its simplest initiatives is to protect rare local crop varieties, such as heirloom tomatoes. I’ve never tasted a sweeter, fleshier tomato than the Chondrokatsari variety served at the taverna in Ithomi. Sprinkled with sea salt and slick with fruity olive oil, the tomatoes had been sun-ripened in the garden below the taverna’s terrace, which seemed to float above the ruins of Ancient Messene. For the setting alone, Ithomi’s tomato salad just beat the San Marzano tomato marinara served at the Mandarin Oriental’s “omakase” pizza bar. There, elated by a flight of exceptional Italian wines, I tried eight different pies that were flipped, fired, and primped just a few feet away.

In this surprising corner of Greece, I really could have it all: hospitality of the highest caliber, and a truly authentic experience.

Costa Navarino: The Lay of the Land

With four branded resorts, four golf courses, dozens of bars, shops, and restaurants, and activities for all ages, Costa Navarino is one of the most ambitious tourism developments in the Mediterranean. It’s an easy 3½-hour drive from Athens or a 45-minute drive from Kalamata’s scrappy international airport—named after none other than Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos.

The two adjacent resorts at Navarino Dunes are primarily tailored toward families and golfers. The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort is a little more sedate than the Westin Resort, Costa Navarino , which features a water park, bowling alley, NBA basketball school, and a soccer camp.

About six miles south, on the Navarino Waterfront, the Agora, a mall and street-food hub, is popular with both hotel guests and locals. The Agora is sandwiched between the W Costa Navarino and the Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino . A fifth cluster of resorts, Navarino Blue, is also in development, located on a sandy beach a 10-minute drive from Kalamata airport.

A First Look at the New Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino

The new mandarin oriental is remarkable for both its innovative architectural features and its sustainable design..

Giorgos Tsiros | September 13th, 2023

There are hotel brands whose properties are considered destinations in their own right. Just as we say “I’ve been there” for a particular country or city that has been etched in our mind, we also say “I’ve stayed there” for certain hotels. I’m referring to those places that transcend their designation as “luxury” hotels to achieve – and continuously redefine – perfection in the area of hospitality. Those that offer a life experience and whose presence in a particular destination raises the status of the location across the international tourism sector in general and in the eyes of that sector’s most demanding and affluent guests in particular . I’m referring, of course, to that class of traveler that the 20th-century journalist Igor Cassini dubbed “the jet set”.

It’s not of paramount importance how such hotel brands price their services, because their core customers know the true value of the services they offer. They know, too, that these hotel brands will always lead the way when it comes to innovation, sustainability, best practices, aesthetics, gastronomy – in fact, in everything. After all, if these great names can’t live up to the expectations they have created through years of dedicated effort and investment, they run the risk of jeopardizing their reputation.

Countless lists of hotel brands of this caliber are published every year. A recent survey of the best luxury hotel brands, published by CEOWORLD magazine in April 2023, include, among other hotel brands, Six Senses, Soneva, Rosewood, Four Seasons, One & Only, Aman and, of course, Mandarin Oriental, whose hotels have prominently figured on these lists for years.

I’ve never stayed at any of the Mandarin Oriental hotels, but I’m familiar with the brand’s iconic fan logo , as well as its award-winning advertising campaign, launched in 2000, which showcases an impressive cast of international celebrities who regularly stay at its hotels (Christoph Walz, Cecilia Bartoli, Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, Michelle Yeoh, Morgan Freeman, Isabelle Huppert and others). It should be noted that while many luxury hotel brands recruit notable individuals for their campaigns, Mandarin Oriental goes one step further, rewarding its celebrity guests (who are, in fact, true fans of its hotels) with a donation to the charity of their choice.

The first Mandarin Oriental hotel opened its doors 60 years ago in Hong Kong . In 1974, a second hotel opened in Bangkok, laying the foundation for a hospitality group that gradually expanded throughout the world. Today, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group operates 38 hotels worldwide (more locations are currently under development), all renowned for their luxury . In fact, Forbes magazine has awarded 25 of the Group’s hotels five-star status in recognition of the experience they offer their guests .

Mandarin Oriental is a luxury hotel brand that combines traditional Asian hospitality with modern cosmopolitanism. The following extract – from an article on the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok by freelance travel writer Lee Cobaj which appeared in the luxury and lifestyle travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler as part of a review of the best hotels and resorts in the world – gives you a good idea of what this blend produces: “On my last visit to the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, I ended up chatting to a family of Thai tuna-fish billionaires over plates of sushi at kaiseki restaurant Kinu by Takagi. A few months before, I gave Russell Crowe a big smile and a nod in the corridor, thinking his face looked familiar – an old neighbor? Then there was the time I was upgraded to the glorious ivory-and-jade-green John le Carré suite and spent most of my time in a bathrobe watching long-tails, tankers, and rice barges zigzagging along the Chao Phraya River, imagining myself to be a real writer.”

Although its origins lie in the Far East, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has always managed to integrate, with respect and a touch of imagination, the local culture of each destination into its hotels . For example, every hotel has its own fan logo, designed by local artists and inspired by the region’s local history and cultural heritage.

The logo of Mandarin Oriental, Paris, for example, was designed by Maison Lesage, an haute-couture embroidery atelier that is part of Chanel’s Métiers d’art, while in Dubai, the hotel’s fan logo was designed by Aljoud Lootah, a multidisciplinary designer based there.

The renowned Chinese fashion designer Vivienne Tam designed the logo for Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou, while Dimitris Papaioannou – perhaps Greece’s most multitalented and internationally renowned artist – was commissioned to design the fan logo of Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino . For his work, Papaioannou drew inspiration from ancient Mycenaean motifs and the colors of the Messenian landscape.

Natural elements

Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino officially opened its doors. The areas and spaces that you see on these pages came alive, welcoming their first guests. And what a welcome awaits them! The influence of the Messinian countryside did not stop at the unique fan logo. The terraced design of the hotel’s earth-sheltered villas, discreetly nestled into the hillside, offers unobstructed, panoramic views of the Navarino Bay , bringing guests as close as possible to nature and the area’s unspoiled beauty. The hotel’s architectural features are inspired by local rural traditions and the stone sheepfolds that dot the region. Built from local stone, the hotel’s villas and suites follow the landscape’s natural contours, creating the feeling that the resort is organically linked to its location, incorporating as it does such natural elements as trees or large rocks. The hotel was designed and built on the principles of green architecture ; the villas’ planted roofs blend in so perfectly with the natural landscape that, from above, the resort is almost invisible.

Another characteristic aspect of Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino is the seamless flow between the hotel’s indoor and outdoor areas, enabling guests to interact with nature effortlessly . This indoor/outdoor connection, along with the use of local materials, is prominent throughout the resort. Interior stone walls are covered with a natural coating, while exterior concrete components have been left unashamedly exposed – although they have been polished – to offer a minimalist contrast . Windows with innovative aluminum frames offer unobstructed views of the sea. Olive trees, cypress trees, lavender shrubs and thyme plants envelop the building, toning down those concrete exteriors and giving the structure a sense of true rootedness.

manessis travel costa navarino

The hotel’s interior design reflects, in both the materials and shapes that were chosen, the beauty of; nature itself. It’s characterized by touches of finesse and elegance, incorporating elements inspired by travels around the world. The design is complemented by a palette of earthy undertones with subtle motifs and soothing colors. Design aficionados will also be able to make out references to ancient Greek handicrafts, to the region’s historical landmarks, and even to the Greek revolution of 1821, with motifs, fretwork and traditional costumes on view .

The Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino, the fourth hotel developed by TEMES S.A., a leading destination developer, stretches out over an area of 140 hectares with views of Navarino Bay . It has 99 rooms, including 48 earth-sheltered villas with a private pool , as well as five restaurants and bars and an impressive spa that will open in the fall. Tombazis & Associates Architects and K-Studio developed the resort’s design, while the indoor areas and spaces were designed by Alexander Waterworth, Studio Afroditi Krassa, MKV Design and K-Studio.

NB: In a recent interview given to the journalist Ilias Bello of “Kathimerini” newspaper, the Group Chief Executive of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group James Riley expressed his confidence that a third Mandarin Oriental – in addition to Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino and the one currently under construction in collaboration with TEMES S.A. and anticipated to open in 2027 in Elliniko, Athens – will be constructed in Greece in the near future.

Care for the environment

Contributing to local communities and protecting the environment are two of the main pillars on which the Group’s development strategy is founded. Its goals include transforming its hotels into plastic-free facilities and expanding its procurement programs to cover the key categories of seafood, coffee, tea, vanilla, cocoa and eggs, all sourced responsibly. On the basis of the principles of green architecture, Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino was designed with an emphasis on maximizing energy efficiency and respecting the natural environment .

The earth-sheltered villas offer many climate and energy benefits. The resort’s facilities use electricity for which guarantees of origin will be received.

The resort has been set up so that its scale of operations can contract or expand to meet capacity needs, depending on the level of occupancy , thus reducing energy consumption and improving the guests’ experience.

manessis travel costa navarino

The shade that is provided by the resort’s façade and the natural ventilation in the open spaces makes the need for mechanical cooling support in these spaces unnecessary without, however, compromising guest comfort. The strategy of abolishing air conditioning systems, wherever possible, is being achieved with the creation of semi-protected areas that “filter” the weather conditions.

Materials such as marble, mosaic and stone, all of which have come from local suppliers, don’t require a lot of maintenance and “mature” over time to further blend in with the surrounding landscape.

The Navarino Bay area is now home to more than 2,700 replanted olive trees and 500,000 planted shrubs.

Recycling will be carried out throughout the resort via the creation of different waste streams based on circular economy principles aimed at achieving zero waste.

In the near future, a large part of the power that the resort uses will be produced on-site through renewable sources, a strategy consistent with the commitment that the hotel has made to achieve a net zero carbon footprint by 2030.

After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List hotel winners for 2024.

Training at Mouratoglou Academy, star tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou's tennis training complex in ... [+] France's Cote d'Azur.

Whether one’s mother is just starting to take lessons or is the Singles Champ of her club, anyone can benefit from some serious tennis coaching. Since many tennis programs are also located in destinations that are tempting vacation spots as well, holiday time goes along with the training.

The layout of Mouratoglou Academy in France.

Mouratoglou Academy , France They can’t promise a Grand Slam winning streak like Serena Williams’s, the most famous of the many tennis stars that Patrick Mouratoglou has coached, but the staff here will certainly up anyone’s game—and as an added bonus, the Academy is located in Biot on the Cote d’Azur, 15 minutes from Nice International Airport. The 30 acre resort contains 34 clay and hardcourts; adult tennis camps are available from June 17 th to August 31 st in either five day weekday or two day weekend, full day, half day or night session tennis instruction including physical and mental training. On site accommodations include a full scale resort and apartments. And since Patrick Mouratoglou lives nearby, he drops by and interacts with participants when he isn’t on tour with Holger Rune whom he’s currently coaching. Other top ranked pros such as Stefanos Tsitsipas also come here to train so you never know who’ll be hitting in the next court.

Courts lit for night play at the Mouratoglou Tennis Center Costa Navarino on the Greek mainland.

Mouratoglou Tennis Center at Costa Navarino , Greece The Mouratoglou coaching philosophy is also available at this center in the resort community of Costa Navarino overlooking the Ionian Sea in the southwest Peloponnese. There are 12 courts-seven clay, four hardcourt, one grass court-half and full day sessions available for instruction as well as tennis clinics, physical and tactical training and the ability to play full games against the pro. Then after sessions end, there’s a sandy beach and two resorts, The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort , and The Westin Resort Costa Navarino and their full spas for recovery.

Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar , Spain The 22 Grand Slam winner set up this academy in his hometown of Manacor, Mallorca in 2016 to pass along his methodology (or as much of the extreme physicality and slashing forehands that can be communicated.) This year, the Academy, with 43 clay and hardcourts, is opening its first adult camp from June 16 th to August 25 th offering 12 hours of technical tennis training, five hours of physical preparation and other activities plus seven nights at the resort Rafa Nadal Residence . Nadal’s first coach, his uncle Toni, and former World No. 1 Carlos Moyá, are in charge of the programs and Rafa drops in from time to time. There’s also a new facility in Mexico: the Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre in Costa Mujeres which offers three-six day programs with training two hours a day and accommodations at the resorts TRS Coral Hotel and Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa .

Relaxing in the pool at Sensei Porcupine Creek after a tennis lesson at Indian Wells Tennis Garden ... [+] or Sensei

Indian Wells Tennis Garden , Indian Wells, California The site of the BNP Paribas Open, aka Tennis Paradise, is open to members and the public when the pros aren’t staging their tournament. Lessons are available in hour and half hour sessions along with regular group clinics and faster live ball clinics. Located 14 miles from Palm Springs, the tennis center is surrounded by resorts but an appropriate add on for these tennis activities is a stay at nearby Sensei Porcupine Creek in Rancho Mirage owned, like Indian Wells, by Larry Ellison. Apart from additional instruction by Director of Tennis Caroline Vis, a former WTA top ten doubles player, guests can take advantage of all of the scientific and holistic wellness treatments at this 230 acre retreat. The views of the Santa Rosa Mountains that surround the property would be worth a visit on their own and so is the cuisine created by Nobu.

The tennis complex in Mandarina on Mexico's Riviera Nayarit.

One & Only Palmilla in Los Cabos; Mandarina , Riviera Nayarit, Kanai , Riviera Maya, Mexico The tennis management company LUX Tennis operates top tier tennis coaching facilities in resorts around the world as well as contracts with major tennis players who make personal appearances at the resorts. Like the other international programs, these three Mexican resorts offer the LUX combination of individually tailored private lessons, clinics, games and tournaments for players of all skill levels throughout the year. And for participants who time it well, they might encounter current stars in resort Meet and Greets such as Carlos Alcaraz who dropped into One & Only Palmilla to offer personal instruction in December and Iga Swiatek who did the same in Cap Juluca in Anguilla; the players also sometimes oversee tournaments among the participants and will hit against them. (LUX Tennis is also offering Forbes readers a complimentary tennis lesson if they book their stay through LUX.)

The setting of Rosewood Bermuda.

Rosewood Bermuda Through its association with Cliff Drysdale Tennis , another major tennis management company, this resort offers a comprehensive tennis program of lessons, clinics, competitions and mixers on its four Har-Tru courts. Led on site by Director of Tennis Ashley Brooks, one of the island’s top ranked players, instruction can be individualized to all levels. And given Bermuda’s perfect sports environment-hot during the summer but moderate during the winter-tennis is played throughout the year.

The private island of Mustique in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Mustique Tennis Club, Mustique, St. Vincent and the Grenadines The celebrities and royals who own elaborate villas on this private Caribbean island also play a lot of tennis. The six courts at the Tennis Club are available to all island guests for lessons and clinics with Club pros along with seasonal camps and tournaments in high season plus the Mustique Tennis Academy taking place this May and June. In it, the staff analyzes technique, ups the level of coaching and guests test out the new skills in a high level of match play. Afterward, guests staying in either villas or the island’s one hotel The Cotton House can participate in other island activities such as sailing, lying on the beach or the nightly parties at Basil’s Bar. (To book a place in the Academy, email [email protected])

The Ritual Bath at the Boca Raton's Spa Palmera.

The Boca Raton , Florida This South Florida grande dame, extensively renovated two years ago, has for generations been a meeting place for tennis players in the area social scene. The Racquet Club is comprised of 16 Hydro-Grid courts and a full service concierge to coordinate the activities whether it’s organizing private lessons or finding a partner of comparable skills for a game. Clinics for adults range from fundamentals for beginners to power tennis. And after participants come off the court, they have the beach, eight pools, 15 restaurants and Spa Palmera for relaxing weary muscles.
