Jordan High School Unveils New State-of-the-Art Auditorium
The campus-wide renovation project at Jordan High School has reached another key milestone. The school is ready to unveil its brand new, state-of-the-art auditorium, needing to add just a few more finishing touches. Jordan’s complete renovation project was made possible by funding from Measure K, a school bond measure passed by 71 percent of Long Beach voters back in 2008. Construction began in 2014, and the auditorium becomes the latest addition to the ever-changing campus.
The auditorium renovation was Stage 4 of the overall project at Jordan, with a total cost of $22 million. According to David Miranda, Executive Director of Facilities, Planning and Development for the Long Beach Unified School District, the Jordan renovations are now about 65 percent complete, with more construction projects set to begin this summer.
“Those of us who work on school facilities projects are very fortunate, as there is a clear tangible benefit when we cross the construction finish line–a new facility,” Miranda said. “It’s very rewarding to see smiles on the faces of students and staff as they enter a new school or modernized facility. While COVID has presented many challenges, we’ve also been able to accelerate construction in many cases, which is an overall benefit for our students and also for our construction work force that remains employed during these difficult times.”
The new auditorium received seismic strengthening of its structure, as well as a completely overhauled interior. Everything from flooring, seating, lighting, and catwalks is all brand new, and the building is now more accessible with wheelchair ramps to seating areas and two new elevators to the basement and balcony areas. The 41,000-square foot building was originally constructed in 1950 and hasn’t received significant renovations since. The auditorium will seat approximately 1,350 guests between the main seating area and the balcony, and includes brand new audio-visual systems to control lighting, sound, and video projection.

“We’re really excited and can’t wait to get our students on campus so they can actually see it and have their first performance,” said Jordan High principal Keisha Irving of the auditorium.
Dave Barclift is the Stage Technician at Jordan, and has been in that role since 1978. He undoubtedly knows the building better than anyone, and has been blown away by the upgrades.
“The facility, WOW! What a major difference. It looks absolutely fabulous,” said Barclift, who is also a union stagehand. “This is nowhere near what was , this is what is in the industry. It’s above top of the line, it’s professional.”
Barclift and his students will have tons of new equipment to work with once they’re able to safely return to campus. There are 15 new computers in the auditorium, which will control the lighting, sound, and video inside the facility. Because the new equipment is state-of-the-art technology, Barclift feels his students will be more prepared than ever to enter the workforce and pursue careers in entertainment.
“Out of all my years here, I have over 200 students who are working in the industry,” he said. “Whether it’s film, on tour, radio, television, I’ve got kids out there who have done it. We’re here for the students, and to have the right equipment that is current and being used professionally, and have those same students be able to touch and work with it, wow, that’s pretty cool stuff.”
According to Miranda, the next phase of renovations at Jordan will involve the demolition of four buildings on campus that were constructed in the 1930’s. That will be followed up by the construction of a two-story classroom building and a lunch shelter on the west side of campus, which runs along Atlantic Avenue.

Jordan High School Orchestra
Jordan Orchestra
Since opening in the Fall of 2020, the orchestra program has grown to approximately 200 students in six orchestras. In its short existence, the orchestra has set a high standard of artistic achievement. It is worth noting that the orchestra earned Sweepstakes at the UIL Concert & Sightreading evaluation in its first year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. As individual performers, students in the orchestra have reached great heights. Members of the orchestra have performed with the TMEA All-State Orchestras at the annual Clinic and Convention in San Antonio, TX, TMEA All-Region Orchestras and the Houston Youth Symphony! March 2023, the Symphony Orchestra placed 1st in the Full Orchestra division of the National Orchestra Festival held in conjunction with the American String Teacher’s Association National Conference in Orlando, FL. In September of this year the Jordan High School Symphony Orchestra and the Jordan High School Sinfonia Orchestra were both named National Winners in the Mark of Excellence National Orchestra Honors project. In October of this year, the Jordan High School Sinfonia Orchestra was named 1st Runner-Up in the TMEA Honor String Orchestra Competition.
About the Directors
Kyle Davis is the Head Orchestra Director at Jordan High School in Katy ISD. Prior to his appointment in Katy, Mr. Davis worked for the school districts in Amarillo, Ector County, and Humble. He has also served as a clinician and adjudicator throughout Texas. Students in Mr. Davis's orchestras have been successful at All-State and All-Region auditions, solo and ensemble contests and earned multiple “Sweepstakes” at UIL Concert and Sightreading contests. In addition, his orchestras have earned numerous “Best in Class” and “Best in Festival” Awards at national music festivals.
Kyle studied music at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, TX receiving a Bachelor of Music (All-Level Certification) and a Master of Arts in Music. His teachers include Emmanuel Lopez, cellist of the Harrington String Quartet and Dr. Mark Bartley, Associate Director of the School of Music, and Associate Conductor of the Amarillo Symphony. While in school, he earned many awards as a young conductor and music education researcher. As an undergraduate, he organized and conducted several chamber music performances. This led to invitations to guest conduct the WTAMU Symphony and cover conduct on many occasions for the ensemble. Mr. Davis was one of five conducting students selected in a national search to participate in the College Orchestra Directors Association masterclass with Thomas Cockrell of the University of Arizona and Keith Lockhart of the Boston Pops. While working on his undergraduate degree, he was named a Ronald C. McNair Scholar and completed graduate-level research on UIL programming. The resulting research has won awards and been presented at the TMEA and TODA Clinic and Convention.
Upon graduating, Kyle joined the faculty at Amarillo College as the Director of Orchestral Activities and the Amarillo Opera as an assistant conductor. While at AC, the orchestra grew in membership orchestra and developed into a fully symphonic ensemble. In 2011, he made his professional opera conducting debut with the Amarillo Opera’s Production of Joshua’s Boots, an opera by Adolphus Hailstork.
Mr. Davis is married to Heather Davis, Head Orchestra Director at Sartartia MS in Fort Bend ISD and they have a four-year old son and future cellist, Grayson.
Sunny Yam is very excited to serve as the first Assistant Orchestra Director at Jordan High School in Katy ISD.

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Mr. Yam began his musical studies at the age of six with piano lessons, followed by playing clarinet in band in middle school. At fourteen, he began playing the viola, and subsequently performed in the orchestra at Clear Lake High School, under the directorship of John Law, Kevin Black, and Bryan Buffaloe, while studying viola privately under Pei-Ling Hwang. Mr. Yam performed with the Clear Lake HS Orchestra at TMEA twice as the Honor Orchestra in 2013 and 2014, and at Alice Tully Hall in New York City in 2013 for the National Orchestra Cup.
Mr. Yam completed his Bachelor of Music in Music Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where he was a scholarship student and graduated with honors. He studied viola performance with Allyson Dawkins, string pedagogy with Dr. Kristen Pellegrino & Dr. Eugene Dowdy, conducting with Dr. John Zarco, and music theory & psychology with Dr. Stacey Davis.
While at UTSA, Mr. Yam performed on clarinet in the University Band and viola in the UTSA Orchestra. He was the Orchestra's equipment manager and principal violist for important performances, including a collaboration with baroque violinist Rachel Podger, a performance at TMEA as the Invited College Orchestra, the UTSA Lyric Theatre's production of Into the Woods , and a tour through the Rio Grande Valley region. He also participated in viola master classes with Lila Brown and Rita Porfiris.
Mr. Yam was a teacher in the UTSA String Project, and also taught violin and viola privately throughout San Antonio; many of his private students went on to qualify for Region Orchestra and the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA).
He completed teacher observations at various schools throughout Northeast ISD and Northside ISD, culminating in his student teaching at Rawlinson Middle School with Sophie Renker and Clark High School with Teresa Nguyen.
Outside of college, Mr. Yam performed in various local community orchestras, including Alamo City Symphony Viva and the South Texas Symphonic Orchestra.
Outside of teaching and performing music, Mr. Yam enjoys reading, singing, milk tea, and Korean BBQ, and is an avid enthusiast of video games, anime/manga, and history.

Local News | Jordan High’s new auditorium to receive final touches
Jordan High School recently reached another milestone in its decade-long campus renovation project: the near-completion of its new, modernized auditorium. The $200 million renovation project began in 2014 and is funded by Measure K, a school bond measure passed by Long Beach voters in 2008.
The $22 million auditorium, originally built in 1950 with no significant improvements until now, was Stage 4 of the overall project at Jordan High.
“We’re finishing up our furniture and equipment move-in for the auditorium building this week,” David Miranda, Executive Director of Facilities, Planning and Development for the Long Beach Unified School District, said in an email. “And overall the Jordan renovations are at about 65% complete.”
The scope of the auditorium’s renovation includes seismic strengthening of the building structure; a complete overhaul of the interior, including new flooring, seating, lighting, ceilings, stage floor, stage rigging and curtain systems.

Also included are new audio-visual systems that include projection screen, speaker system with surround sound, video projection; a new HVAC system and accessibility upgrades like two new elevators for access to balcony and basement areas, accessible seating, ramps and accessible restrooms.
The auditorium will be able to seat approximately 1,350 guests.
The next several years will see plenty more upgrades to the campus, officials said.
The next phase of construction for the campus, Miranda says, is anticipated to begin construction later this year. This next step, Phase 2B, will include the demolition of four aged buildings constructed in the 1930s. A new, two-story classroom building and lunch shelter will then be built along the Atlantic Avenue side of campus.
Upgrades to the school’s gymnasium, athletic field and pool are expected to complete soon after in the winter of 2023.

Educator PROfile: Jordan High counselor works hard to promote college-going culture, and provide support and resources for students
Meet Reinaldo De Jesus, Jordan High School college & career counselor and SAT/PSAT/AP/SST coordinator. Recently, we talked with him about everything he does to help students make the most educated decisions about college and their futures. Read below.
In October, we kick off college season. It’s a time when students start researching schools, dig into the process of applying for admission and financial aid, and begin the journey to better understand what they might like to do for a career–whether they decide to go to college or go directly into the workforce after high school graduation.
For Jordan High School’s College & Career Counselor Reinaldo De Jesus, it’s one of the busiest times of the year. Over the past few weeks, he’s had an action-packed schedule–one that’s not slowing down anytime soon.
“One of the things we’re trying to do is bring as many college reps as possible in so that the kids can be well-informed before they apply to any schools,” he says. Jordan has hosted several representatives from the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) schools over the past few weeks as well as the Los Angeles Trade Technical College. The school also organized a College Wellness Resources Fair, to combine students being able to talk with college representatives with getting information for managing their mental health during this time.
De Jesus has also brought students to schools through a series of field trips. In addition to an upcoming trip to UC Santa Barbara, there’s also one to Cal State Northridge planned, as he wants to ensure his students get information on California State University’s Educational Opportunity Program . This program provides admission, academic, and financial support services to the state’s historically-underserved students.
He also provides opportunities to head to more far-flung destinations. In late October, De Jesus and another chaperone traveled with eighteen Jordan High School students to tour five HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities). Students from two other Partnership high schools–Mendez High School and Santee Educational Complex were also part of the same trip. This was Jordan’s first HBCU trip, and De Jesus credits Santee’s Assistant Principal Kymbereley Garrett and Morgan Blue, the Partnership’s College Success Advisor, for guiding him through how to make the trip a reality for his students. “The trip was great, and the students were able to see each school’s campus, culture, and environment,” he says. “I genuinely believe a trip like this changed the lives of our students and gave them a perspective they would never be able to get otherwise. By committing to more college tours, we’re allowing students to make school decisions based on experiences–not names.”
Now that the HBCU trip is over, the next part of De Jesus’ work begins–the focus on FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid) and college applications. He relies on the school’s resource partners to help make sure students are being kept on track. “Every partner that has students in their rosters, they’re basically helping with their college applications,” he says. Because with 150 seniors at Jordan, partnering with others helps ensure all students complete their applications. “Many of these kids are first-generation college students, and sometimes, all they need is access to information,” De Jesus says. “They don’t want to be too far away from their family. They hear a lot about the cost of student loans.” The hands-on approach with the resource partners gives students the accountability and encouragement they need to follow through on their applications.
De Jesus also says that even though this is a busy college “season” for Jordan, students’ college-going culture starts way before the eleventh grade. The school’s Early Start College Program gives students the opportunity to take college classes beginning in ninth grade. All the classes they take are transferable to CSU or UC schools. “Our goal is to expose them to what taking college classes is like, and our ultimate goal is to get them to finish as much of their first two years of college as they can,” he says.
Looking into the future, De Jesus has other goals for the College & Career Center at Jordan. “I want to bring back a College Awareness class for ninth and eleventh grades,” he says. The initial course would introduce students to the options they have, with the course repeated in the second semester of their eleventh-grade year. “That way, we’re preparing our students for the college application process,” he says.
For now, De Jesus is concentrating on the near future, which includes making sure students and their families have the information they need to complete their FAFSA forms. Jordan’s college center partners with the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) to bring financial experts directly to those who need them. “We have about 6-7 FAFSA workshops planned,” he says. “That’s my focus.”
