How to Catch Pokémon in Safari Zone

In the Pokémon series of games, Safari Zones are special unique areas in each game where rare Pokémon that don't appear anywhere else in the game can be caught. Safari Zones always operate with different rules than the rest of the game world - instead of battling Pokémon in the wild like you normally would, you'll need to carefully use baits and deterrents to get Pokémon to let down their guards so you can catch them. This can be quite challenging, so knowing the ins and outs of Safari Zone mechanics in each game is vital for success.

Navigating the Safari Zone

Fighting and capturing pokémon.

Step 1 Be aware of the modified combat mechanics for the Safari Zone.

  • Note that the "run away" option functions as normal, so we won't be discussing it.

Step 2 Use bait to make a Pokémon less likely to run.

  • However, using bait will also make the Pokémon more difficult to catch in a safari ball. Thus, striking a balance here can be difficult — the longer you get the Pokémon to stick around for, the harder it will be to actually capture it.

Step 3 Use rocks to make a Pokémon easier to catch.

  • However, there's an important downside: using rocks will also make the Pokémon more likely to run away. In fact, after taking more than a few rocks, a Pokémon is virtually guaranteed to run away — some will exit the battle sooner. Thus, once again, using rocks means striking a delicate balance as you try to capture your Pokémon.

Step 4 Use safari balls to attempt to capture Pokémon.

  • Note that you only have a limited supply of safari balls (depending on the game, usually 30), so save them for Pokémon you want to catch. It's generally the best use of your time to use your safari balls for Pokémon that are only found in the safari zone.

Step 5 In general, go for capture attempts after one or two rock throws.

  • Note that safari balls are weak compared to the pokéballs you can use in the rest of the game. In addition to this, especially rare Safari Zone Pokémon are extra-difficult to catch. [2] X Research source This can lead to some very frustrating situations — for instance, it can easily take 20 or more tries to catch an exceptionally rare Pokémon like Clefairy.

General Tips

Step 1 Use your limited steps carefully.

  • Bulbapedia, an online user-supported Pokémon encyclopedia, has extensive information about each game's Safari Zone, including maps and guides covering where to look for the Pokémon in each zone. See the Bulbapedia Safari Zone article to get started. [3] X Research source
  • Note that there is no step limit in the Safari Zone in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. [4] X Research source

Step 2 Be prepared to pay the entrance fee.

  • Across all of the games in the series, the entrance fee has stayed the same: 500 P . This includes the Great Marsh in Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, which is not technically a Safari Zone but behaves very similarly.
  • One smart strategy is to save your game before you enter the Safari Zone. This way, if you don't catch any Pokémon you want, you can re-load to avoid paying the entrance fee again.

Step 3 Consider exploring the math of capture mechanics.

  • As an example of the sort of equation used in the games to determine whether certain Pokémon are captured, consider the equation from the Generation games (Gold and Silver): a = max((3 × HP max - 2 × HP current ) × rate modified / (3 × HP max ), 1) + bonus status where HP max is the Pokémon's maximum HP, HP current is the Pokémon's current HP, rate modified is the catch rate of the Pokémon modified by the ball used (every Pokémon and every ball modifies this in a certain way, and bonus status is the modifier for any status condition (sleep and freeze are 10, all others are 0). [5] X Research source When you throw a ball, a random number between 0 and 255 is generated. If this number is less than or equal to a, the Pokémon is caught.

Catching Pokémon in the Kanto Safari Zone

In the following sections, we'll highlight the rare Pokémon in each Safari zone and give specific advice where applicable. To keep these tables to a reasonable size, we've included only the rarest Pokémon in each area — for exhaustive information, consult the Safari Zone guides at Serebii.net and Bulbapedia.

Catching Pokémon in the Hoenn Safari Zone

Note that the Generation 4 Hoenn Safari Zone (Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) won't be covered here as the player is allowed to engage in ordinary battles in this zone.

Catching Pokémon in the Sinnoh Great Marsh

Though Sinnoh's Pokémon preserve has a different name, it functions virtually identically to Safari Zones in other regions.

Catching Pokémon in the Johto Safari Zone

Note that the Safari Zone is not available in Generation 2 (Gold/Silver) but is available in the Generation IV games that visit Johto (HeartGold/SoulSilver). Note also that in this Safari Zone the player can arrange the six different areas in any arrangement desired. Finally, many of the areas in the Johto Safari Zones have Pokémon appearance rates that are not yet known — only data for the known areas has been included. See Bulbapedia for more information. [6] X Research source

Expert Q&A

  • Once again, the data in the tables above only deals with the most noteworthy Pokémon in each area. In fact, many more Pokémon appear in each Safari Zone. Thanks Helpful 3 Not Helpful 2
  • Remember — you have a limited number of steps inside the Safari Zone, not a limited amount of time. Thus, you can take as long as you like if you control your movement carefully. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 3

Do we know if this guide is still true for the game as it is today? I seem to have some conflicting results as far as finding specific pokemon in various areas after a few hours of combing the area. Maybe my "sample" size isn't big enough and I need to spend a good 12+h or so just farming the safari? I'm looking for pokemon like Kanguskhan, Lickitung, and Scyther.

Scyther is a pain to find, I will always advice to get it from the game corner.

Kang and Lickitung are not that

Go area 1 for kang, and area 2 for licki. And just farm. Maybe will take you 5 safari for both, but this is the only way to get them (with your ot)

Not sure, but, I assume "rare" rate is 4%, but Scyther/Pinsir is a total 4%, making it 2*2%.

As "very rare" is, imo, 1%, it's closer to very rare than rare.

The Hoenn region (Japanese: ホウエン 地方 Hoenn region ) is a region of the Pokémon world . It is located south of Sinnoh , [1] and southwest of both Kanto and Johto . [2] It is the setting of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire , Emerald , Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire . It was the third core series region to be introduced.

Hoenn is inspired by the real-world Japanese main island of Kyushu . The names of most of the cities in Hoenn are made of two words put together ("Little Root", "Fort Tree", "Slate Port", "Ever Grande", etc.) rather than colors or plants as Kanto and Johto had done. Professor Birch of Littleroot Town offers the first partner Pokémon known as Treecko , Torchic , or Mudkip to Trainers beginning their journey of this vast land.

Etymology and design concept

hoenn safari zone area 6

Junichi Masuda has stated that Hoenn's name signifies "abundant relations" (豊縁 hōen ), as a common theme in this region is the relationships forged between Pokémon and people. [3]

Design concept

The Hoenn region is based on the real-world Japanese main island of Kyushu , rotated 90° counterclockwise. Junichi Masuda stated that the reason Kyushu was rotated 90° to create Hoenn was to increase playability. [3] According to the Pokémon Omega Ruby & Pokémon Alpha Sapphire: Super Music Collection , Masuda further clarifies that this choice was related to the horizontal display of the new Game Boy Advance screen. [4]

Hoenn was created after Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre were formed. Primal Groudon raised the landmasses and Primal Kyogre filled the seas that would later become Hoenn. A meeting between these two caused a great battle for supremacy until it was quelled by Mega Rayquaza , sending Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre into caverns where they rested until they were awakened many years later during the course of events in Generation III or Generation VI . The moving of the continents by Regigigas created Hoenn, and when Regigigas was sent to sleep in the Snowpoint Temple in Sinnoh , Regirock , Registeel , and Regice , the keys to awakening it, were sealed away in Hoenn.

In contemporary history, Brendan / May moved to Littleroot Town in Hoenn from Johto . Brendan/May encountered May/Brendan, competing with Brendan/May to complete the Pokédex. Brendan/May saved Professor Birch from a Poochyena R S OR AS /Zigzagoon E with a Torchic , Mudkip , or Treecko from Professor Birch's bag; as a reward for saving him, he gave Brendan/May a Pokédex and allowed them to keep the Pokémon that they used to save him. Brendan/May traveled across Hoenn, occasionally encountering and defeating Team Aqua and Team Magma . Team Magma R E OR and/or Team Aqua S E AS successfully awakened Groudon R E OR and/or Kyogre S E AS , which caused the region of Hoenn to be plagued by harsh sunlight R OR , heavy rain S AS or a strange mixture of both E . However, Brendan/May successfully calmed the weather Pokémon when they defeated it R S OR AS or summoned Rayquaza to calm them E . Brendan/May then proceeded to beat the Pokémon League and become the Champion, and was invited to compete in the Battle Frontier E .

Upon becoming the Champion, a meteor changed course towards Hoenn OR AS . May's/Brendan's, Wally 's, and Archie 's AS / Maxie 's OR Key Stones were stolen by Zinnia in an attempt to summon Rayquaza to avert the crisis. Brendan/May encountered Zinnia at Sky Pillar and successfully summoned Rayquaza. Brendan/May gave Rayquaza the power to Mega Evolve and it destroyed the meteor.

Environment

hoenn safari zone area 6

The Hoenn region boasts many dramatic environments from rainforests to deserts , but its most striking feature is its abundance of water, a strong contrast to other core series regions, especially Sinnoh. Much of the region is covered in water, almost equal in size to the mainland, exemplifying the theme of the games. There are several large and populated islands off the mainland only accessible via water routes , many of which are deep enough for diving .

Much of the interior area is forested or mountainous, so most notable cities are found on the coastline. People who live in towns and villages in the mountain areas must adapt to the harsh environment. An extreme example of this is the inhabitants of Fortree City , who live in tree houses. This is in stark contrast to other regions in the Pokémon world , as noted by Ruby in Pokémon Adventures , who preferred Johto's many modernized cities to the wilderness and countryside in Hoenn. Hoenn has one active volcano, Mt. Chimney , in the northwest of the region. The ash from Mt. Chimney regularly falls on the nearby towns and routes. On the opposite side of the Hoenn region lies the volcanic R S E /impact OR AS crater which Sootopolis City was built in.

Some of Hoenn's newly discovered Pokémon strongly reflect the influence of the primarily tropical environment.

Hoenn seems to have a warmer climate than other regions, similar to an equatorial climate. This may mean that Hoenn is located closer to the equator than the other regions.

The mainland experiences a wide variety of weather across its breadth. Ashes constantly fall around Mt. Chimney in the northwest. Constant, extreme sandstorms afflict the arid desert near its center. Frequent rain falls on the mainland's northeastern areas, nourishing the rainforests and long grass that grow there.

Demographics

The towns, cities, and areas of the Hoenn region's total population in Ruby and Sapphire is 598. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire , the total population of Hoenn's towns, cities, and areas is 694. Upon its introduction in Generation III , it was the largest region by population. As of Generation VIII , it is the sixth largest region by population.

Notable locations

Hoenn has sixteen cities and towns , including a Pokémon League . Since the majority of the cities and towns of Hoenn are immersed into nature, there aren't many large cities comparable to Unova 's Castelia City or Kalos 's Lumiose City , with the largest city being Lilycove City R S E / Mauville City OR AS .

The Hoenn region has 34 different routes , which are passages permitting Trainers to travel from one location to the next with relative ease. Much like Sinnoh after it, Hoenn's routes are numbered so that they don't follow sequence directly from previously-known regions' routes. Routes in Hoenn are numbered from 101 to 134 . Compared to other regions, Hoenn features an abundance of sea routes. This gives the impression that the Hoenn region is half-water and half-land, which references the battle of Groudon and Kyogre.

The Hoenn region is unique and famous for its tropical-like environments. The region does not feature a true mountain range like in Sinnoh and other regions. Hoenn introduced many new natural environments including a volcano, a jungle, a beach, a desert, and many more. The Hoenn region also introduced the idea of routes with differing weather , including constant rainfall, thunderstorms, falling ash, and rays of sunlight.

This is presumably to discourage the idea of being able to travel back to either region after completion of the game, as was done in Generation II and as a mirror of the fact that Japan's road system possesses a similar gap. Some of the routes have differing weather depending on the day they are traveled on.

Catching Beldum in Hoenn Safari

I've heard that Beldum is obtainable in Hoenn's Safari Zone Area 2. I've spend A LOT of time there, I've paid for 40 entries (for 5k each), every entrance lasts 20 minutes. In 20 minutes, statisticaly, I meet 90 Pokemons.

Summary: I've met (90*40) 3600 Pokemons and I've spend (20*40) 800 minutes what is equal to 13-14 hours. And... I've never met any Beldum... Is it possible? Maybe that Pokemon is not available in that are anymore? Did you catch Beldum in Hoenn's Safari? How much time did you spend doing that? I've met 3600 different Pokemons... And 0 Beldums... Maybe he is not available?

Thanks for your help.

According to the discord, beldum spawns at route 228 (morning/night, tier 9) or at the Sinnoh Safari Area Zone 4 (Night, tier 8).

You just need to try the Sinnoh safari instead of the Hoenn safari. He is still very rare at the Sinnoh safari and my advice is to buy the 24 hour pass to save money.

Hope that helps!

Olker

Yeah he does appear, just that it's very rare. Remember to take a ghost type with you and like 200 balls, so you don't whine again...

Hi there. He doesn't actually spawn in Hoenn Safari Zone Area 2, but rather Hoenn Safari Zone Area 4. This is probably why you haven't met any Beldum. Furthermore, it's a Tier 8 pokemon in the Safari Zone, which can make it very difficult to find. Below are other places you can find Beldum.

Now, in order to catch Beldum, I suggest you use a Ghost type false swiper in order to catch Beldum as they may have Take Down. The following pokemon can are Ghost-Type False Swipers.

Hope this has clarified things for you. Let me know if you need further help.
