About Eric Church

Eric Church’s most recent critically acclaimed and chart-topping project, his  Heart & Soul  triple album, is available everywhere now. Featuring the results of a marathon session during which he spent nearly a month writing and recording a song per day while sequestered in rural North Carolina, the trio features his latest Gold-certified No. 1 “Hell of a View” and recent Top 5 hit “Heart On Fire” as well as his latest single, “Doing Life With Me,” climbing the charts at Country radio now.

Just as unique as Church’s approach to recording and releasing music is his tenacity on the road. His latest outing, the 55-city  The Gather Again Tour ,   offered fans an in-the-round show and earned the  Billboard  Music Award for Top Country Tour. Church also performed one-of-a-kind headlining stadium shows at Milwaukee’s American Family Field and Minneapolis’s U.S. Bank Stadium in 2022 and took the field at Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium to perform the National Anthem with R&B star Jazmine Sullivan ahead of Super Bowl LV in 2021. During 2019’s  Double Down Tour  he played back-to-back nights of two unique shows in each market sans opening act, giving every city’s fans six-plus hours of his iconic music. The tour also featured a massive stop at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, where he broke the venue’s concert attendance record with more than 56,000 fans in attendance and became the first artist to sell out the venue with a solo lineup.

A seven-time ACM Award winner, four-time CMA Award winner (including the 2020 award for Entertainer of the Year) and 10-time GRAMMY nominee, Church has amassed a passionate fanbase around the globe known as the Church Choir as well as a critically acclaimed catalog of music. His previous project, the Gold-certified  Desperate Man , earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album (his third nod in the category). Prior releases include the Platinum-certified  Sinners Like Me  (“How ’Bout You,” “Guys Like Me”) , Carolina  (“Smoke a Little Smoke,” “Love Your Love the Most”) and  Mr. Misunderstood  (“Record Year,” “Round Here Buzz”), the Double-Platinum certified  The Outsiders  (“Like a Wrecking Ball,” “Talladega”) and the 3x Platinum-certified  Chief  (“Springsteen,” “Drink In My Hand”) ,  as well as 30 Gold, Platinum and multi-Platinum certified singles.

Eric Church on Tour Openers Koe Wetzel, Shane Smith: ‘That Was Me 20 Years Ago’

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Since his 2019 Double Down Tour , Eric Church has upended the traditional country music live show, doing away with opening acts and choosing instead to carry the night himself by delivering three-hour concerts split into two sets. But for this year’s Outsiders Revival Tour , he was inspired by his own playlist to curate a diverse group of legends, buzz artists, and up-and-comers to join him on the road.

The result touches on all styles under the country umbrella. There’s the hard-nosed Southern rock of Whiskey Myers , the Celtic-influenced red dirt of Shane Smith & the Saints, the Midwest vibes of Hailey Whitters , the genre-hopping of Koe Wetzel, and the twangy yet mainstream country of Lainey Wilson. Other artists on the tour include Jelly Roll, Red Clay Strays, Midland, and Ray Wylie Hubbard.

Church, whose against-the-grain career is the focus of a new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, also saw some of himself in the openers he chose.

“Shane Smith was saying, ‘We’ve thought about quitting for a while.’ And I said, ‘Listen, this happens to everybody. You guys are good. You should keep doing it. And I’m glad you’re here. I’m glad you played in front of the people you did,’” Church says. “That was me 20 years ago.”

Church isn’t just introducing his live crowds to the bands he likes. Since last November, he’s also been programming his own SiriusXM channel called Outsiders Radio . It’s a wildly eclectic playlist: On Friday morning, songs by Greta Van Fleet, Whitney Houston, Paul Simon, Steve Earle, and Church himself all played in succession. A yellow legal pad of artists and songs that’s currently on display in the Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit illustrates how he came up with the station’s aesthetic.

“It’s out of my phone, alphabetical,” he says. “That whole [legal pad], you can flip a page and there’s another page, and another page. I told [SiriusXM], ‘These are the songs and you guys can expand, but make this your compass.’”

Earlier this week, Church also talked to Rolling Stone about his CMA Fest headlining performance, which reinvented past hits and skipped others altogether, leaving some fans unhappy .

“I was shocked because I played the show that I went out there to play,” he said. “We had a timeslot and I went out there to play that slot and try to show a little bit, a peek, as to what I was working on for this tour. I’m not going to [reveal] everything, but I’m going to give a little peek of what this could be.”

All week long, Eric Church has been teasing a big announcement with a series of cryptic posts across his socials. Today, The Chief has confirmed fans’ suspicions by announcing a blockbuster 2023 summer tour, The Outsiders Revival.

Since the original Outsiders World Tour in 2014, Church has been a lone wolf when it comes to playing live. But his 2023 The Outsiders Revival tour will feature a star-studded line-up of special guests, including Lainey Wilson , Midland , Whiskey Myers and more.

Also joining the sprawling tour will be Cody Jinks , Hailey Whitters , Jelly Roll, Ashley McBryde , Koe Wetzel, Parker McCollum , Travis Tritt, Elle King and Paul Cauthen.

Completing the line-up will be Jackson Dean, Morgan Wade, Muscadine Bloodline, Shane Smith & The Saints, Ray Wylie Hubbard and The Red Clay Strays.

Coming off the back of receiving the Billboard Music Award for Top Country Tour, Eric Church is charging into his 2023 set of shows with a tank full of momentum.

The tour kicks off with a special Summerfest performance in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 22, which will be supported by Elle King. This is set to be followed by a show the next night in Detroit, Michigan featuring Ashley McBryde and The Red Clay Strays.

Commenting on the mammoth tour, The Chief underlined his determination to try a new approach, “When I approach touring, I’m always inspired by a new experience, a new way to gather, to express ourselves sonically and visually.

Whether it’s solo, in the round, double down; being able to bring a different perspective has always brought out our best creatively”.

The tour's eclectic mix of supporting artists will make each night truly distinct, with the opening acts varying from show to show.

The line-up features a number of established country heavyweights, such as Midland and Ashley McBryde, along with a suite of rising stars, from Parker McCollum to Jelly Roll, who will no doubt be performing his first ever Country Radio No. 1, ‘Son of a Sinner’ .

The Outsiders Revival tour, the name a nod to Church's 2014 album and accompanying set of shows, will close in Tampa, Florida on September 30, with support from Southern rockers, Whiskey Myers.

Eric Church’s The Outsiders Revival Tour at Pine Knob Amphitheatre

eric church outsiders revival tour lineup

Independence Township,Michigan (June 23,2023)- Eric Church throughout his career has been the standard for live performances in country music. In fact, he has been compared by many as being the Bruce Springsteen of the genre with his lengthy performances that often have segued into the early morning hours of the following day. Friday night at the Pine Knob Music Theatre there was no three hour music marathon but something new and invigorating from the man fondly known as “Chief” that should take his long time concert fans about three songs to adjust to.

Near the outset of the two-hour and 15-minute concert ,his ever first performance ever at the amphitheater and second stop of his The Outsiders Revival Tour, Church promised “this is gonna be a little different tonight, but it’s gonna be…badass” and to maybe spoil it a bit, he wasn’t wrong.  The idea was that the guy who for years has primarily toured in arenas and presented three-hour plus, multi night-long epic performances could trim things down for a more intimate outdoor amphitheater settings while adhering to local noise ordinances to have a cleared stage by 11 p.m., usually about the time in his set the arena based concerts have really started to take off. But remember this is Eric Church, the O.G. Outsider…a guy that does things his way…and also a previous CMA Entertainer of the Year that traditionally has played until HE says he is done.

The Outsiders Revival Tour is a hybrid concept for both Church and his fans alike. Some long standing followers are sure to be disappointed by the shortened show length, but what this country Icon has done is develop a setlist that keeps fans glued to their seat for two plus hours of pure Eric Church at his finest, but with a twist. Sometimes a little less turns out to be a whole lot more and that creed held true Friday night with Church. While he can never be accused of not giving fans what they want, his arena performances have sometimes been legendary to a fault. Although supported by a sturdy repertoire from his eight albums, some arena mainstays were notably absent Friday such as “These Boot’s” and “Record Year.” Both time consuming and long during his arena shows, there was no place in tonights affair for an extended band strumming and autograph session which in the past has encompassed 20 plus minutes. Reining it in on Friday, even if he went up against a costly curfew, Church and his 12-piece band were more immediate and impactful, almost playing with a sense of urgency with plethora of surprises that added vibrancy and freshness to Church’s familiar sound.

eric church outsiders revival tour lineup

As mentioned the expanded 12-piece band itself is a new endeavor and serious game changer that takes the sonic experience to a whole new level. Church threw out the status quo by augmenting his usual touring band with three backup singers and a three-piece horn section. The expanded stage presence brought new textures and flavors to many of the 25 songs, from the rhythmic arrangement of the opener “Chattanooga Lucy” to the funky soil take on “Bad Mother Trucker,” a jazz infused revue style play-through of “Hangin’ Around” and a Zydeco/Caribbean vibe to “Drink in My Hand.” But Church didn’t forget his roots and held fast to tradition with a more pronounced,  contemporary feel to Friday’s rendition of “Country Music Jesus,” while “Give Me Back My Hometown” started quietly and built into the  muscular anthem it is before settling back down for its conclusion.

As has become a Church tradition when he plays the Motor City, he paid tribute to Bob Seger during a story he reminisced , reminding the standing crowd how the Detroit rock icon stepped in  2006 after Rascal Flatts removed Church from their tour as an opener. “I would not be here at all if it weren’t for Bob Seger,”  Church proclaimed, who ironically or smartly planned was wearing a Bob Seger T-shirt. “The next phone call we got was Bob Seger, and it went something to the effect of, ‘You can’t open for them, but you can open for me,’ so that’s what we did,” and the rest, as his storied career attests, is history. Church and then band then rolled through an epic eight-song, 12-minute medley of Seger that he and the band put together for, as he told the story, “A one time only and never to be performed again..,” of scintillating covers of “Turn the Page,” “Like a Rock,” “Roll Me Away,” “Mainstreet,” “Get Out of Denver,” “You’ll Accomp’ny Me,” “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” and finishing up with “Night Moves.”

Other highlights of the night included a guest duet with opening act Ashley McBryde during “Mixed Drinks About Feelings,” a cover of Little Feat’s “Sailin’ Shoes” and an extended performance of “Pledge Allegiance to the Hag,” performed in front of a large American flag and giving most of the horn section, most notably a particularly animated, trombonist Roy Agee, room to stretch out at stage front that had the staunchest old school Eric Church fans dancing in the aisles .

eric church outsiders revival tour lineup

There were plenty of other Church favorites throughout the night that fans could hang their hat from, including “Mr. Misunderstood,” “Heart Like a Wheel,” “Homeboy,” “Smoke a Little Smoke” and an acoustic version “Springsteen,” that featured a solo Church, under a lone spot light laying it all out in front of 15000 swaying fans.

Nearing the end of his main set Church told the long sold-out Pine Knob Amphitheatre crowd, many still dripping from the day’s rain that finally stopped by the time he hit the stage around 9:05 p.m., that “There’s a certain time we’re supposed to get done — but I’m not gonna do that. Apologies to the local community here.” In typical Church style, then played until about 11:15, adding favorites such as “Talladega” which ultimately was requested my a young fan holding a sign near the stage and which Church acknowledged by pointing at the fan and announcing that “We weren’t going to play this tonight but this for you,” along with a mesmerizing   acoustic performances of “Holdin’ My Own” and “Sinners Like Me,” post-curfew and incurring Independance Township’s (in)famous $1,000-per-minute overtime fine.

Friday was only the second stop of The Outsiders Revival Tour and the fans on hand got a glimpse into an artist thats never satisfied and always strives to give his fans what they want plus more. Sure, he will be chastised for trimming his 3 1/2-hour performances  to a more manageable time frame by fans and nay-sayers alike. Sometimes less is more and what Eric Church has done is eliminated the fat and created a lean two-hour performance that is every bit as good and dare say better than what we have seen in the past. Its a new and welcomed chapter in the career of the country legend and for that we say well done Mr. Church, well done.

The outsiders revival tour - raleigh, nc 8.4.23.

By Adam Lucas

RALEIGH—If we are being honest, I was nervous about Friday night’s Eric Church concert.

When people find out you are spending your summer going to virtually every show of the Outsiders Revival Tour, they immediately want to know your assessment. It is only natural.

So you spend most of your time talking about how incredible it is, and how every night is different and the set list is amazing and the horns and the band and the background vocals and the production and that opening and…well, you know. All of it.

But here’s the difference about Friday’s show: most of the people I’ve been telling for weeks were in the crowd at Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek. For a month, I’ve been saying this was the greatest concert they would ever attend. Now they had to judge for themselves.

So I was nervous. This was my home game—my only home game. What if my crowd didn’t come ready to play? What if they just sat and watched? What if they didn’t sing along or never fully committed to the night or held something back?

And now, late as Friday night turns into Saturday, after an hour of Cody Jinks and over two hours of Eric Church, I can confidently say: those were really stupid worries. Because Raleigh brought it.

“Welcome to North Carolina,” Church said from the stage after the second song, “Bad Mother Trucker.” “This is going to be one of those nights,” he said. “I’ve had this circled all tour.”

And then he promptly set about doing everything he possibly could to ensure that it was indeed one of those nights. You could tell very early that he was feeling it; as the band launched into “Drink In My Hand,” he spontaneously yelled, “Here we go now!” It’s those little moments.

Like this one: after “Drink,” guitar tech MJ Sagraves brought Church his next guitar, but had to pause for a couple seconds because Church was still soaking in the crowd’s raucous reception to the previous song. That doesn’t happen on a normal night. But this wasn’t normal.

During “Where I Wanna Be,” there’s a “Hey! Hey! Hey!” part with the background vocalists. On a typical evening, Church says, “Gimme me six times,” or maybe seven at the most. The number tells the vocalists how many times he wants a “Hey!”

Friday night, he asked for ten.

Around that time, the texts were starting to roll in. These are all actual texts from people I’d told about the incredible show they were about to see.

“This is unbelievable. What would it feel like to be that good at something?”

“The people around us are living their very best life. So many of them. It’s incredible. Every lyric. Genuine joy.”

“This really is a dream come true.”

“Every song feels like the best one.”

I’ve spent a lot of nights at Walnut Creek, and if you’re local you know that’s still what you call it. Right down there in section two, I caught Kix Brooks’ black cowboy hat when he hurled it into the crowd in the late 1990’s at a Brooks and Dunn show. Up there on the lawn, I saw Rhett Akins sing “That Ain’t My Truck” back before it was considered “90’s country,” when it was a hit the first time around.

I’ve seen Raleigh’s own The Connells and I saw Alan Jackson sing “Chattahoochee” and I saw Tim McGraw before he ever met Faith Hill.

So what I’m saying is that there’s plenty of history here. But people talk about core memories. I hope my image forever of Walnut Creek is Eric Church singing “Carolina” in August of 2023. When he got to the part about, “I’d love to see my momma,” he added, “Who is in this room tonight.”

And I looked to my right, and there was Rita Church, who raised her hands in the air, as if to wave to her son. In that moment it was just the two of them in that sea of 20,000 sold-out people, and I got full body chills.

I highly recommend that everyone should see Eric Church sing “Carolina” in North Carolina. As he said when he finished, “Whew. That was worth the trip right there.”

There is just something about an amphitheater in the summer in front of a sold-out crowd. These nights last way longer than just a couple of hours. These nights produce the stories that we tell at family dinners and holidays and in multi-exclamation point texts to our friends for years.

Andrew, one of the self-proclaimed biggest Cody Jinks fans in the entire building, happened to spot Jinks in the crowd during Church’s set and ended up with a signed setlist from the very gracious singer. A friend took his 10-year-old son to his very first concert and watched as he shouted back, “Hey!” in all the right parts on “Desperate Man.” Two of our close friends, longtime diehard Eric Church fans,   just happened to find their engagement song on the night’s setlist.

There’s just something about these nights. And especially this night, in front of these hometown—as Church said, “ my hometown”—folks.

And Raleigh, he noticed. After the show, he was talking about what a great crowd you were, about how difficult it is to play in front of the home folks because you want everything to be perfect…but how rewarding it can be when it actually goes perfectly.

He finished with “Those I’ve Loved,” the first time he’s played the song live at a concert in nearly two years. It was the perfect finale because so many of those were indeed in the building. But he’d already given the most fitting description of the evening.

In “Round Here Buzz,” there’s a line that Church will sometimes change to fit the setting. On Friday night, it went this way:

“I never had big city eyes

“I come from Caldwell County.”

This can be tricky. There have been stops on the tour where finding the right words to rhyme with the location he picked can be problematic. You try, for example, to spontaneously come up with something that rhymes with Ontario.

On this night, though, the next line was completely obvious, and (of course) completely perfect.

“It’s great to have,” he sang, “all these fine Carolina people around me.”
