How To Guides

Travelling with your lightsaber by air, mail or tsa.

How to travel with a lightsaber from Disney? How to get a lightsaber home from Disney World? People usually have these questions after they visit Disney. Other people just want to carry their lightsaber to their Jedi adventures, Cosplay event, or Halloween. Either way, they need an answer about how they can travel with their lightsaber.

So, let’s quickly check if it is possible to travel with your lightsaber or not. If yes, then what are the rules and regulations, and what airlines allow you to carry your lightsaber? And what are the rules for traveling with your lightsaber on the road?

disney lightsaber travel

Traveling on Plane

So, you created a lightsaber in Savi’s workshop and want to know how to bring It back home. The general rule is that you can travel with your lightsaber as a carry-on item. Some airlines, like united airlines or delta airlines, and most others, always allow it. People mostly do not have any issues regarding that. Still, some cases tell other stories.

According to the  TSA guidelines , you can carry a lightsaber on the plane, but they insist that you pack your lightsaber in your luggage. The final decision always depends on the present officer on duty. If the officer does not allow it as a carry-on item, you will face a problem traveling with your lightsaber. A TSA officer can reject your lightsaber as a carry-on item due to the following factors.

Traveling with Lithium-Ion Batteries

A lightsaber from Disney runs on lithium-ion batteries. The same goes for almost every lightsaber on the market. The lithium-ion battery is considered an essential part of a lightsaber as it gives a long-lasting life.

These batteries are suitable for the lightsaber, but they can appear a dangerous item to a TSA officer. These batteries can appear as explosives or electronic parts that can hinder the plane’s signals. Additionally, the  FAA guides  that any battery is not allowed as a carry-on item.

You can disassemble the lightsaber parts and pack the batteries or the whole lightsaber in your luggage. Also, make sure to turn it off to avoid any spark.

The lightsaber looks like a Weapon

A TSA officer may reject your lightsaber as a carry-on because a lightsaber looks like a weapon, even if it is a toy. If your lightsaber has a long and pointy blade, or the hilt has claws or fangs-like shape. The chances are that the TSA officer may not allow it as a carry-on item.

People from different backgrounds travel on planes. A lightsaber can look like a sword or other dangerous weapon to many passengers.

But if you want to carry it, you can try and convince the officer to allow you. Many people have tackled this situation like this. They said, ‘you can ask the officer nicely.’

Still, if the officer does not allow it, you always have the option of packing it in your luggage. So, this is what you should do. Reach the airport earlier than time and keep a backup plan to pack your lightsaber in your luggage bag. If the officer does not allow it, you can pack it in your bag.

Traveling on Road

Traveling with your lightsaber on the road is much simpler than the air. Still, the same situation can take place as there are random people in local transport. A lightsaber can appear threatening. So, to avoid the problem, you should carry your lightsaber in your bag.

Traveling on the road can also be bad for your lightsaber. The rattling can cause the displacement of internal electronic parts. I recommend you pack it properly so that it does not rattle. Many people use a foam bag or a bubble wrap as the wrap can absorb the rattling.

The best option is a lightsaber case. Keeping your lightsaber in this  lightsaber case  will protect your lightsaber. You can buy a lightsaber case in Dok Andor’s Den. So, when you create your lightsaber, I recommend purchasing a lightsaber case for road traveling.

How to Ship a Lightsaber by Mail?

Sometimes traveling with your lightsaber is not an option, but you cannot leave it behind either. You may have bought a lightsaber from Disney land’ Dok Andor’s Den or crafted your own at Savy’s Workshop. What should you do?

You can simply mail the lightsaber to your desired address. Disney officials also give you the option to ship your lightsaber to your address. You have two options to ship your lightsaber from Disney. You can go to Droid Depot and provide all the details regarding your address to the customer service there. They will send your lightsaber.

The same option is also available at Dok Andor’s Den. When people buy a character lightsaber from Dok Andor, they prefer to mail it. But, you can do the same with your Savi’s workshop lightsaber.

The lightsaber’s hilt and its blade are sensitive parts. You need to pack these properly and cover them in a large box before shipping them to your address. Keep all the parts separate from each other for shipping. You can connect them later for a duel time.

How to Disassemble a Lightsaber?

If you want to mail your lightsaber from Disney, or you want to carry it with you, you should disassemble your lightsaber first. I emphasize it as it saves you from traveling troubles and is good to keep your lightsaber parts protected.

You can easily  disassemble a Disney lightsaber . Just push the blade downward. Now twist the blade anti-clockwise. This way you will unscrew the lightsaber blade from its hilt. If you want to remove the battery, just keep a Philips screwdriver with you. Unscrew the bolts on the hilt, and remove the battery before shipping the lightsaber.

Buying a lightsaber from an online store like  ZIA Sabers  should not be a problem as they provide direct shipping to your home address. If you have bought a lightsaber or any other accessory from our infinite collection of Lightsabers, contact us and let us know your query. We will help you sort out your issue, whether it is a shipping issue or some other.

Traveling with your lightsaber may sound complicated, but it is just as simple as carrying any other toy around if you follow the guidelines. Travel with your lightsaber by separating the lightsaber parts or mail it to your address. So, what is keeping you from not taking your lightsaber to Star Wars events and exhibiting your true Jedi talent? Pack it up right away.

Lightsabers TSA and Air Travel Tips: Everything You Need to Know

What are the Transport Security Administration (TSA) guidelines for traveling with a lightsaber on an airplane? Many lightsaber enthusiasts, especially after visiting Disney’s Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, wonder how navigate an airport in the United States with their Savi’s Workshop lightsaber , legacy lightsaber , or custom lightsaber . Let’s go over some travel tips for flying with a lightsaber.

What are the rules for flying with lightsabers?

Official tsa guidelines for lightsabers.

Although the TSA organization writes that “you can pack a toy lightsaber in your carry-on or checked bag” consider that the TSA also emphasizes that “the final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint” . The TSA frequently allows lightsabers as carry-on items. It’s possible, however, in some cases that the TSA will require the traveler to pack the lightsaber in their checked luggage instead. Source: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/light-saber

Traveling with Lithium Batteries

Some lightsabers run on lithium batteries. The FAA requires that spare lithium batteries must be included with carry-on luggage only. Additionally, the FAA advises that “[d]evices containing lithium metal or lithium ion batteries…should be carried in carry-on baggage when possible.” If the item must be included in checked luggage, then the device “should be turned completely off, protected from accidental activation, and packed so they are protected from damage.” Source: https://www.faa.gov/hazmat/packsafe

Lightsabers as Carry-On Items

Many travelers safely and successfully pack a metal-hilt lightsaber in their carry on luggage. Be sure to pack the lightsaber in an easily accessible bag or section of your bag . A TSA officer may wish to inspect the lightsaber or ask you to turn it on.

If you plan to travel with the lightsaber as a carry-on, arrive at the airport a bit early . Make a backup plan for packing the lightsaber in your checked luggage. Occasionally TSA officers have denied lightsabers as a carry-ons due to the item’s resemblance to a banned item like a “bludgeon” or “club-like object” or “tool longer than 7 inches”. Many people traveling with Disney Parks lightsabers (e.g. Savi’s Workshop lightsabers, legacy lightsabers) successfully take collectibles on the plane as carry-on items. Specific custom lightsaber hilts with claws, sharp edges or any weapon-like section are more likely to get flagged or denied by security . If your hilt looks sharp and weapon-like to you, chances are it will to the TSA as well. Source: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/all

Carry-On Requirements from Airlines

Check your individual airline’s carry-on requirements and size restrictions in advance. If the lightsaber is allowed through the security checkpoint, the lightsaber will typically get stored up in the overhead bin as a personal item or carry on item, much like a musical instrument.

Travelers may separate the lightsaber hilts from the blades, sometimes packing the blades separately in checked luggage. Make sure you pack the lightsaber securely in a box or bag with extra padding because the bags inside the overhead bins shift around during the flight.

Lightsabers as Checked Luggage

The TSA allows lightsabers as checked luggage. Consider that checked luggage is frequently handled more roughly than carry on items so make sure you pack the lightsaber securely with extra padding, whenever possible, in order to minimize the risk of the lightsaber getting damaged on it’s way to or from airplane cargo hold.

Some travelers elect to check their lightsaber blades, since they’re large and cumbersome, and pack their lightsaber hilts in their carry-on luggage.

Alternative: Mailing a Lightsaber Home

As an alternative to flying with a lightsaber, you may consider shipping your lightsaber home or to your destination through the USPS, UPS or FedEx. Shipping the lightsaber is sometimes cheaper than checking it, although a lightsaber hilt and its blade often require a long box. Make sure you pack the lightsaber in the box securely with extra padding/packing material in order to help prevent damage during transit.

Watch Out for the USPS Nonstandard Fee

In 2022, USPS added a nonstandard fee, which is applied on top of any of your standard postage charges. If a package measures between 22 inches and 30 inches long, the added fee is $4.00. If the package is more than 30 inches long, the added fee is $15.00.

Lightsaber blades along may easily exceed 30 inches long, so be aware of the USPS surcharge. Due to surcharge, you may consider shipping through FedEx or USP instead.

Complete guide to Savi’s Workshop (cost, how it works, options for kids)

Complete guide to Savi’s Workshop (cost, how it works, options for kids)

Without a doubt, one of the most widely known images to come out of the Star Wars universe (aside from Princess Leia’s hair) is that of a lightsaber.

You don’t even have to be a huge Star Wars fan to recognize its iconic shape.

If you want to build a lightsaber on your next Disney trip, you’ll actually have a couple of different places where you can do that: Savi’s Workshop and Tatooine Traders .

Here’s how both of those experiences work, with our thoughts on who we think should consider each.

In this article

Savi‘s Workshop Overview

  • Price: $249.99 per person building
  • Location: In Galaxy’s Edge at Savi’s Workshop (a standalone building in Batuu)
  • Reservations required?: Yes, although you may be able to snag a walk-up spot, if this is a must-do, we highly recommend making reservations up to 60 days in advance.
  • Lightsaber: High-quality. Not a toy, but more like something you’d display or use for cosplaying.
  • Best for: Anyone looking for an immersive experience or older kids and adults who don’t intend to play heavily with their lightsaber

Savi’s Workshop is probably the more well-known option for building a lightsaber. Unlike the Build Your Own Lightsaber Station at Tatooine Traders or Once Upon a Toy, Savi’s is an entire experience where you become part of the story.

Getting Started

A short time ago in a galaxy far, far away, 2 women ventured to the far off planet of Batuu to build a lightsaber…

…and they were totally blown away with the entire experience.

Staying true to the immersive environment that the Galaxy’s Edge world provides, Savi’s Workshop is a wondrous place where participants get to actively dive deeper into the Star Wars story – both its history and its future.

Lightsaber hilt

Trust us on this one, while inside Savi’s you truly feel as if you are living the life of a Jedi (or, if you prefer, Sith).

What follows includes details and spoilers. If you prefer to avoid those, you might want to skip this post.

But, one thing we can relay that is spoiler-free – we absolutely loved it all.

Here’s how it works if you too want to build your own lightsaber:

Reservations

The first thing you need to know is that Savi’s does require reservations .

Now, of course there may be days when walk-ups are available, but if this is a must-do item on your list, a reservation is the only way to go.

Inside Savi's

Reservations can be made online up to 60 days in advance.

There are a few rules when it comes to who can do the building:

1.) For each person who paid to build a lightsaber, there can be 1 guest.

Disney World is pretty strict with this rule, and honestly, the space doesn’t allow for a bunch of extra people, so we understand why they have it.

Of course, the Cast Members there understand that there are instances when it may be necessary for 2 guests to go in (for instance when the number of children outnumber the adults) but this is something that is handled on a case-by-case basis.

2.) The minimum age to build at Savi’s Workshop is 5, which we feel may even be a bit young.

The height of the table would make it difficult for smaller children to even be able to see.

In fact, the entire experience is a lot to take in, and we personally wouldn’t bring anybody younger than about 10.

3.) Guests under the age of 7 must be accompanied by somebody over the age of 14.

The cost is $249.99 per person building and there are no discounts available. You pay when you arrive (not when you make the reservation).

So, yes, this isn’t a cheap experience, but it is definitely something special that you might want to consider adding on to your visit to Batuu.

Details of the build at Savi‘s Workshop

You’ll be asked to show up about 10-15 minutes before your scheduled reservation time.

When you arrive to Savi’s Workshop you’ll notice that there aren’t any obvious signs that might tip off the First Order to what is happening inside.

The Gatherers work hard to keep the location a secret, but the banner out front does provide a hint as to what lies inside the building…

Outside of Savi's Workshop

You’ll first check in with one of the Cast Members outside.

There they will confirm your reservation and direct you to a kiosk where you can transfer your credits (aka pay) to Savi.

Pay at Savi's Workshop

The lightsabers constructed here are unique in that they are built with “unusual parts, whimsical pieces, and miscellaneous memorabilia collected by the Gatherers from the far reaches of the galaxy.”

That’s part of what makes the build so personal:

Each builder gets to construct a custom lightsaber built around the pieces that are important to them.

With all that in mind, it’s at this time that you will be asked to choose your theme out of the 4 that are available:

  • Peace and Justice Salvaged scraps from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships in these Republic-era designs honor the galaxy’s former guardians.

  • Power and Control Originally forged by dark side warriors, this style features rumored remnants from the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples.

  • Elemental Nature  This theme embodies the Force—an energy created by all living things, like Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones and Rancor teeth.

  • Protection and Defense  Hilt materials bear mysterious motifs and inscriptions that reconnect users with the ancient wellspring of the Force.

Tip: if you aren’t sure which one you want to do, ask if you can take a look inside the chest located nearby. There you’ll find all the different options laid out. They can’t be removed from the drawers (because they are attached) but being able to see them in person should hopefully help you make your decision.

Once your selection is made and you’ve paid, the builder will be given a corresponding Star Wars cloisonné pin (which you’ll be asked to wear over your heart).

Savi pin

The pin’s shape matches the theme you’ve chosen and is another nice memento from the experience.

Savi pin

You’ll then be given a card identifying your build group and be asked to move into an area out front that is walled off.

Savi card

This is one part of the build that we didn’t like – we had about 15 minutes to wait and because of the lack of shade, we found ourselves waiting in the sun.

During the middle of the day, it was dreadfully hot, making us even more thankful when we were able to move inside and into the air conditioning. The lack of a covered area to wait is also an issue if it is raining.

They do have some umbrellas out, but they don’t offer a ton of protection, in our opinion.

savis workshop outside

This lack of shade (or protection from the rain!) isn’t always an issue, but something to think about when planning.

They run a very tight schedule, so stick to arriving 10–15 minutes early if you want to avoid possibly waiting in the elements.

Building a lightsaber

Once you are inside, each builder is asked to find a spot at the table while the Gatherers assemble to help.

Selecting a kyber

First up is the selection of the kyber crystal.

kyber crystal

For those in the know, kyber crystals are the heart of the lightsaber and what gives each one its distinctive color.

You’ll have 4 different colors to choose from:

  • blue: like that of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Rey
  • green: like that of Qui-Gon Jinn, Ahsoka Tano, Luke Skywalker, and Yoda
  • violet: like that of Mace Windu
  • red: like that of Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Asajj Ventress, and Kylo Ren

Once you’ve selected your crystal, you’ll be given the hilt of your lightsaber and a tray of parts.

Build parts

Remember when you were asked at check-in what hilt theme you’d like?

You’ll now be presented with a box of parts that represent that theme.

For each section of your build, you’ll be able to choose which pieces to use, and you’ll have a Gatherer stationed nearby you to help with the assembly (if you need it).

The parts of your lightsaber that you’ll be customizing are:

  • sleeve (you’ll have 4 available to choose from and you pick 2)
  • emitter (you’ll have 2 to choose from and you pick 1)
  • pommel cap (you have 2 to choose from and you pick 1)
  • activation plate and switch (2 sets to choose from and you pick 1 set)

Note: Even though you’ll have choices for each section of your lightsaber, you won’t be allowed to take the extra parts with you.

lightsaber holder

After the hilt is constructed and you’re happy with how it looks, the magic happens.

Everybody places their lightsaber in a special slot where the blade will be magically attached.

You can see by the video just how mystic this part of the build ceremony is. Seeing all the sabers light up for the first time was amazing.

This was probably our favorite part – it was very exciting to watch them all come to life in the darkened room.

After the final ceremony is over, all builders will be provided a very nice padded carrying case to help with transporting their lightsaber back to their home planets.

Savi‘s Workshop FAQs

Can you ship your lightsaber home (or back to your resort).

Yes, you can.

You can ship from Droid Depot (skip the line out front and go straight to the registers in the back of the shop) or from Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

If you get back to your resort and decide before you leave that you’d like to ship it home, many of the resort gift shops will be able to assist you with that (you’ll just need to make sure you have your receipt), but they’ll provide the box and everything needed for shipping.

As reference, it cost us $17.95 to ship one lightsaber from Pop Century.

International rates (including Canada) will be higher.

Shipping box lightsaber

How many guests can you take with you?

Just 1 additional guest per reservation, except in case of a young child who needs to stay with an adult or specific disabilities that may require it. They are pretty strict about this rule, too.

How big is the lightsaber?

The blade itself is about 34″ long (with 31″ of it actually exposed outside of the hilt). The hilts themselves vary in length, but are all around 8-10″ long.

You can detach the blade from the hilt.

Note: the blade doesn’t squish down any smaller like a toy lightsaber; it is 1 solid piece.

How long does it last?

The entire process takes about 30 minutes.

Are there spare parts available?

Currently, the only spare parts you can purchase are additional kyber crystals which are available at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

The price for additional crystals is around $20. In addition to the colors that you can find at Savi’s, yellow and white kyber crystals are available here (although their popularity often means that they are sold out).

kyber crystal

Can I go in to look around?

No, you can’t enter without pre-paying.

Can I take it on a plane with me?

The TSA allows it , but check with your airline for their specific rules.

What is the better choice – building a droid or building a lightsaber?

These are 2 totally different experiences.

The droids you build at Droid Depot are adorable and cute and a toy, but the lightsabers are high-quality display pieces (not something you’d use as a toy).

They are at a similar level as to what you might find with serious cosplayers.

What if I need to cancel my reservation?

Just like with Advanced Dining Reservations at Walt Disney World, you’ll be asked to provide a valid credit card number when you book your reservation and you must cancel 24 hours in advance to avoid paying a cancellation fee. If you don’t cancel (and are a no-show), Disney says you will be charged the full $249.99 per reservation on the credit card you provided.

Is Savi’s Workshop worth it?

We loved it. It was an amazing experience, and the lightsaber itself was of very high quality (like a nice cosplay-level piece).

galaxy's edge lightsaber photopass

If you are a Star Wars fan that has always dreamed of owning your very own lightsaber, we think this is a great way to make that happen.

Finished lightsaber

The entire process goes by very fast, especially considering the $249.99 price tag, but if you’ve always dreamed about becoming a part of the Star Wars story, we definitely think this is something you should add to your bucket list.

Alternative lightsaber options for kids

As much as we love the Savi’s experience, we don’t think it is a great option for younger kids. They will probably think it is cool, but if they want to have a lightsaber they can really play with, this isn’t a great choice.

tatooine traders

Instead, if you know you have someone who has hopes of being able to take their lightsaber into battle, we recommend you opt for the Build Your Own Lightsaber option at either Tatooine Traders OR at Once Upon a Toy (in Disney Springs):

Build Your Own Lightsaber at Tatooine Traders

  • Price: $34.99 (single), $39.99 (deluxe single), $49.99 (double), $59.99 (deluxe double)
  • Location: Inside Tatooine Traders, which is a shop at the exit of Star Tours
  • Reservations required?: No
  • Lightsaber: Toy-style
  • Best for: Anyone who wants a lightsaber they can play with

build a lightsaber disney world

While not as immersive as Savi’s Workshop, the Build Your Own Lightsaber option at Tatooine Traders is perfect for younger kids who just want a lightsaber they can play with. The much lower price point is also a lot easier on the pocketbook, too.

Build Your Own Lightsaber at Once Upon a Toy

  • Location: At Disney Springs inside Once Upon a Toy, which is in the Marketplace section

For families who like to save their shopping to the Disney Springs area, you can now build a lightsaber at Once Upon a Toy. The experience here is the same as Tatooine Traders, albeit less themed.

Building a lightsaber at Tatooine Traders and Once Upon a Toy

Unlike Savi’s workshop, the lightsaber builds at Tatooine Traders and Once Upon a Toy are way more informal. Reservations aren’t required, which means you aren’t having to commit to it way ahead of your trip; you can just pop in whenever you are ready to build.

You don’t have as many customization options here, but you do get to select the color, hilt style, and an end cap. And, the lightsabers here do light up, too.

Plus, unlike Savi’s, you can also choose to do a single OR a double lightsaber.

Here are the steps:

Step 1: Choose Emitter

Your first choice will be selecting your emitter for your blade. You can go with the single ($34.99) OR deluxe double versions ($49.99). There are also deluxe versions available for both single and double blades, as well.

Step 2: Choose Blade

Just like at Savi’s, you can choose the color of your lightsaber: red, yellow, green, blue, or purple.

Step 3: Choose Hilt

Step 3 is choosing the hilt, which is the part of the lightsaber you hold.

Step 4: Customize Hilt

After you’ve selected your hilt, you can customize it by adding rings and sleeves of varying lengths. The sleeves have things like “buttons” or decorations on them. You’ll get to select several pieces to fill up the space of your hilt.

build a lightsaber at tatooine traders

Step 5: Choose End Cap or Adapter

Finally, you get to choose an end cap or adapter for your lightsaber.

Once all the pieces are together, you’re done!

There isn’t the same level of pomp and circumstance as what you get at Savi’s – which is usually just fine for kids.

Which one should you choose?

You want to build a lightsaber, but which experience should you choose?

After giving both a try, we think it comes down to what your plans are for the lightsaber when you are finished.

If you want a lightsaber you can play with, or you know your kids are going to want to play with it, skip Savi’s and build one at Tatooine Traders or Once Upon a Toy.

But, if you are looking for something special to do or if you want the full experience, and you are just looking for a display piece or something to use when cosplaying, go ahead and give Savi’s a try!

Yes, You would be required to purchase two of the lightsabers at Savis. However in one of the shops, I believe Black Spire Outfitters, they have a connection piece to join together both Hilts into one. Can confirm as I was just at WDW, FL on the 22nd of December and they offered the piece for an additional $50. @Charlie,

How To Book the Lightsaber Experience at Disney World

Leah

If you’re a Star Wars fan, then a trip to Disney World isn’t complete without booking the Lightsaber Experience at Savi’s Workshop. This immersive and interactive experience allows you to construct your very own custom lightsaber and bring it to life through the power of kyber crystals. But how exactly do you book this experience? In this article, we’ll guide you through the process step by step, provide tips and tricks to enhance your experience, and answer some frequently asked questions.

To book the Lightsaber Experience at Disney World, you’ll need to make a reservation using the My Disney Experience app or the Walt Disney World Resort website. Reservations can be made up to 60 days in advance. A valid ticket for Disney’s Hollywood Studios and a Park Pass reservation are also required. The cost of the experience is $249.99 plus tax. It’s recommended to book as early as possible due to the popularity of the experience.

What is the Lightsaber Experience at Disney World?

The Lightsaber Experience, located in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, introduces you to the “Gatherers”, a group of experts who guide you through the process of building your own lightsaber. You’ll start by choosing a theme for your lightsaber hilt, with options including Peace and Justice, Power and Control, Elemental Nature, and Protection and Defense. Then, you’ll select a kyber crystal, which will determine the color of your lightsaber’s blade.

This immersive experience lasts about 20 minutes, but plan for more time as you need to check in at least 15 minutes in advance. The cost of the experience is $249.99 plus tax, which includes the lightsaber, a carrying case, and the building experience for one builder.

Rules for Flights in the USA

In the United States , lightsabers are allowed to travel in hand and cargo baggage. Although TSA doesn’t make any exceptions on which lightsabers you can carry, the size restrictions of each airline might prevent you from taking long and large lightsabers in a carry-on.

Generally, they should fit in the overhead bin and comply with the airline’s carry-on size restrictions. Keep in mind that some airlines count your lightsabers as part of your carry-on allowance, and some will make exceptions.

Heavy and sturdier lightsabers might also get flagged as a potential bludgeon weapon, particularly if you can’t dismantle them. Therefore, heavier lightsabers made out of metal or wood should be packed in checked baggage.

Rules for Flights in Other Countries

New zealand.

On Canadian and New Zealand flights, lightsabers are allowed in carry-on and checked baggage with restrictions. When traveling in a carry-on, lightsabers should meet carry-on size requirements. Some airlines might allow longer sabers in a carry-on, but passengers should contact them directly. But, for the most part, if they don’t fit, they must travel in checked baggage.

Europe, the United Kingdom, and Australia

In European , United Kingdom , and Australian flights, lightsabers aren’t generally allowed in hand baggage and should be packed in checked baggage exclusively.

India and China

Indian and Chinese authorities don’t specify if lightsabers are allowed in hand and cargo baggage, but generally, they’re considered as toy weapons, which are banned from hand luggage, so it’s best to pack them in checked baggage.

If you want to confirm that our information is accurate and up to date, click on any of the links mentioned above. We linked out to where we found this information for each country.

Disclaimer: The final decision of whether you can bring lightsabers on planes always rests on the security officer. Some airlines also have additional rules that may be different.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bringing Lightsaber Replicas and Toys on Planes

Are lightsaber replicas considered weapons.

Generally, lightsaber replicas aren’t considered weapons on flights in the United States. TSA allows lightsabers in carry-on and checked baggage when traveling. However, the final decision to allow them through the security checkpoint rests on the airport security agent. If your lightsaber is made out of heavy material and can’t be disassembled, it might classify as a potential bludgeon weapon. Plastic and collapsible lightsabers are more likely to be allowed through airport security.

Are all types of lightsaber replicas allowed on planes (Neopixel, Savi, Ultrasaber, etc.)?

For the most part, all types of lightsabers are allowed on planes in the United States. Neopixel, Savi, and Ultrasaber lightsabers are generally welcome in hand and checked baggage. You can carry them alone or use a lightsaber case and place them in the overhead bin. Although TSA allows them, your lightsaber might be too big for some airlines’ carry-on standards. In this case, lightsaber replicas must travel in checked baggage and if they have lithium batteries, you should remove them and pack them in your carry-on.

Even if TSA generally allows lightsaber replicas onboard, and the airline doesn’t have any restrictions against it, the final decision to allow lightsabers through security belongs to the TSA agent at the airport.

Are metal lightsaber replicas also allowed on planes?

In general, metal lightsaber replicas are allowed on planes in the United States. TSA allows all types of lightsabers on planes, regardless of the material they’re built from. However, they do state that security agents at the airport have the last word on the matter. If your metal lightsabers can’t be disassembled and are long enough to be considered a potential bludgeon weapon, then they might not make it through security. Although metal lightsaber replicas are generally allowed, plastic replicas and lightsabers that can be disassembled and stored away in pieces are less likely to have any problems going through security.

Should I pack my lightsaber in checked or hand luggage?

Overall, it’s best to pack your lightsaber in hand baggage when traveling in the United States. TSA allows lightsabers in both carry-on and checked baggage without any restrictions, but whenever possible, it’s best to pack them in hand baggage to avoid possible damage to them in cargo baggage. You can either use a lightsaber carrying case or pack it inside your cabin baggage with the rest of your belongings. But, keep in mind, if it’s in its own case, some airlines might count your lightsaber as part of your carry-on allowance. However, for larger, heavier, and sturdier lightsabers made out of metal, it’s best to pack them in checked baggage in case they get flagged as bludgeon weapons.

If the lightsaber contains lithium batteries and it’s packed in checked baggage, it must be switched off and protected from accidentally activating. Furthermore, all lithium devices must be charged and working because TSA prohibits bringing faulty devices with lithium batteries, which could be a potential fire risk. Spare lithium batteries must always go in hand luggage only.

Savi’s Workshop : Building Your Own Lightsaber

Savi's Workshop : Building Your Own Lightsaber Hollywood Studios 1

How Do You Build A Lightsaber At Savi’s Workshop?

Want to build your own lightsaber? Whether you are a Star Wars fan or not, you must know of or at least have heard about lightsabers before. These majestic glowing weapons are a huge part of the Star Wars community and it’s impossible to find a fan who doesn’t want a customized lightsaber for themselves. Speaking of which, do you know about Savi’s Workshop handbuilt lightsabers in Hollywood Studios ?

Savi’s Workshop is an interactive experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios where you get to build your own lightsaber. You can even choose your own parts for the custom-built lightsaber including your own kyber crystal.

I know how excited you are and how badly you want to get on a plane and go get your own right now. But before you buy your ticket, let’s take a deeper look into Savi’s Workshop and find out all about how things work there.

savi's workshop walt disney world resort lightsabers

What Is Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge?

According to Wookiepedia , merchant Savi appears first in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, where he along with a bunch of other gatherers established a salvage yard in the Black Spire Outpost. In the beginning, they used to collect the scraps of metal found in the nearby junkyard and then make better use of them.

However, The Gatherers were deeply inspired by The Jedis and like them, they deeply believed in the restoration of balance to the force. As a result, soon the salvage yard became a clever front for a secret workshop in the back where worthy travelers could find and make their own lightsabers.

The lightsabers made in this secret workshop were of the highest quality as they were personally customized. The gatherers themselves collected the necessary materials from nearby fallen Jedi civilizations, fallen jedi temples, starships, etc. And as for the crystals, that’s a whole different story.

Savi's Workshop : Building Your Own Lightsaber Hollywood Studios 2

By now, everything about the origin of Savi’s Workshop should be as clear as day to you. And if you know Walt Disney World, you already know that they love to bring in new attractions that have a special meaning for a special fandom. This is also why you get a burst of nostalgia every time you go to visit Disney .

Savi’s Workshop is no different. The workshop made its debut in the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge-themed land in Disney Parks only a few years ago. However, people loved the immersive lightsaber-building experience so much that it ended up becoming a regular attraction at the theme park.

Later on, Savi’s Workshop was added to Disney’s Hollywood Studios as well due. Ever since then, it has been recognized as one of the must-have experiences at Walt Disney World for all Star Wars fans and science fiction geeks in general.

How to Find Savi’s Workshop in Walt Disney World?

Here’s where it gets really interesting. Like most other attractions, you’d think that Savi’s Workshop would be right in your face. But nope, that’s not the answer to “ where is Savi’s Workshop ?”

Remember how the actual workshop was cleverly hidden by using the establishment as a salvage yard? Bingo! Like you, Walt Disney World didn’t forget that tidbit and that’s why to make it more interesting, they hid the workshop in plain sight.

It’s to ensure that only the travelers who are “worthy” enough; find the secret workshop. Another subtle tribute to the movie plot. However, it’s hard to keep it that secret as the crowd and long line outside the secret door kind of gives it away quite easily.

walt disney company - park reservation for savi's workshop handbuilt lightsabers

Here’s how the finding process usually goes. First of all – make sure to have a reservation beforehand. The workshop is not open for everyone, but only the chosen travelers. It’s the truth that always finds you, not the other way around, remember?

Your reservation helps to prove your worthiness to the guardian gatherers. Once you manage to find your way to the Black Spire Outpost, the gatherers will find you and lead you to the secret workshop in the back. They will also give you a collectible pin i.e., the regal cloisonné pin to make sure that you aren’t a First Order Spy.

However, because it’s an in-demand attraction, it can take a while before you can get in. It usually takes about an hour and a half, like most other Disney attractions. Even though that sounds a little daunting, don’t let it demotivate you. The experience is well worth the wait.

Furthermore, while you’re waiting, you can do a bunch of other stuff. You can check out the other attractions in Galaxy’s edge, do some shopping or stop by Ronto Roasters and get a Ronto Wrap.

Plus, Savi’s Workshop is decorated on the outside and resembles the salvage yard from the movies. Even the Gatherers, will entertain you by enacting different scenes from the movie. You can easily spend over an hour exploring the place and take lots of pictures while you’re at it.

How to Make A Reservation at Savi’s Workshop in Disney’s Hollywood Studios?

Savi’s Workshop is a reservation-only attraction so you definitely need to make one before you drop by the workshop. It’s important to remember that the secret workshop is not open to the general public or visitors at all. So, if you don’t make a reservation beforehand, all your lightsaber-building dreams will go straight down the drain.

The reservation slot depends upon availability. And since the workshop is in a constant state of high demand, it can take a while to get a slot. As for any queries on how to reserve for Savi’s Workshop , visit the Disney World website, and then book your slots accordingly.

Usually, it’s best to book two-three months in advance so that there won’t be any complications later on.

Another important thing to remember about the Savi’s Workshop reservation – you are allowed to take only one guest with you. And one of you has to be over the age of 14. The guest can be anyone from an age of 5 and up but it’s best to bring kids more in the preteen or teenage bracket.

So, keep that in mind while making the workshop reservations. Savi’s Workshop isn’t a family attraction so don’t try to bring your whole family in there as guests. You can, however, enjoy the rest of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with all of them. If it’s important to everyone in your group then make sure you make reservations for everyone accordingly.

When Do You Pay for Savi’s Workshop?

Fun fact – even though you have to make reservations for both Disney World and Savi’s Workshop months in advance, you don’t have to pay for everything at once. During booking, you only have to pay the necessary reservation fee with your credit card.

You won’t have to pay for the lightsaber at the time of booking. All the costs for lightsaber parts, scraps, crystals, etc. including other items that you might buy from the workshop will come into play later.

You will pay for them when you show up for your scheduled reservation. However, you’ll need to confirm your credit card for these added costs at the time of booking itself.

Also, if you feel the need to cancel the reservation for any reason, you have to do it at least a day before the event. That way you’ll get a full refund for your reservation.

On the other hand, if you fail to cancel your reservation in time, you’ll be charged fully including tax fees.

Remember that these reservations are monitored closely and are non-transferable. That means you can’t sell, give away or exchange it with anyone else.

How Long Does It Take to Build a Lightsaber At Savi’s Workshop?

Other than the hour-long waiting period at the start, the actual lightsaber-building program lasts no longer than 20-30 minutes.

There’s also a 5–10-minute speech at the start where the head of the gatherers will let you know the history of Savi’s Workshop, and how, why, and where to find the necessary materials for the lightsaber.

Making of A Lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop

All the lightsabers that you will find at Savi’s Workshop are the very best replicas from the Star Wars movies. Normally, you will have access to only the custom-built lightsabers in there. To get a legacy lightsaber, you’ll have to peek inside the Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities right down the street.

As for Savi’s Workshop, here’s a complete rundown of the full experience in a step-by-step guide.

Savi's Workshop : Building Your Own Lightsaber Hollywood Studios 5

Selection of Theme

Since it’s a customized lightsaber-building experience, it’s no wonder that it includes the opportunity to express yourself. You select the parts that bear a close meaning to you. Similarly, you select the theme that describes your aura the best.

Of the four available themes, the first one is ‘peace and justice.’ Made from the lost Jedi relics, this theme is a tribute to those fallen heroes who had righteousness and utmost serenity in their hearts.

The next one is ‘power and control’, which directly contradicts the Jedi teachings. These lightsabers are made from the Sith relics and forged for warriors with darkness in their hearts.

Savi's Workshop : Building Your Own Lightsaber Hollywood Studios 8

Up next, the theme ‘elemental nature’ is for those travelers who feel an overwhelming connection to nature. They embody ‘The Force’ itself in them, and can channel their energy within to strengthen themselves.

And finally, the last available theme is ‘protection and defense’. For those who love to figure out the mysterious events around them, this theme represents them perfectly.

Every element/theme will result in a different build-up of your lightsaber, so choose wisely. Once you are done with the selection, you will receive a cloisonné pin from the gatherer that will set you apart from the rest. This pin is your gateway to the secret workshop in the back.

Oh, another little thing. As mentioned before, there’s a brief waiting period before the event. You’ll be given a card with the pin and then you have to wait with your fellow elemental buddies for the program to start.

the cermemonial speech - fallen jedi temples

The Ceremonial Speech

Once the waiting period is over, the Gatherers will guide you toward the secret workshop arena. You’ll find tables i.e., workstations laid out all over the room where you’ll build your lightsabers. So, camp at the station you want to work at alongside your guest.

But before that, the chief gatherer will start the program with a ceremonial speech that depicts the rich history of Savi’s Workshop. They will also inform you about the four different themes and their significance in building a lightsaber.

Every element i.e., theme corresponds to a separate color that describes them best. The colors for peace and justice, power and control, elemental nature, and protection and defense are blue, red, green and violet respectively.

Savi's Workshop : Building Your Own Lightsaber Hollywood Studios 11

Whenever talking about a certain theme, the room and the ceiling fill up with the corresponding color which makes for quite a thematic appearance. For example – while talking about the brevity and righteousness of the Jedi warriors, the ceiling emits a shade of bright blue as a tribute to them. There’s also a sound effect in the background that makes the experience even more immersive.

Selection of Kyber Crystal

Kyber crystals are the heart and soul of a lightsaber. They are why each lightsaber emits a different glow. Even though these crystals come in various colors nowadays, you’ll only find the main four in Savi’s Workshop.

By now, it’s evident that the kyber crystals come in blue, red, violet, and green. Each color signifies a plethora of Star Wars characters. For example – Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker wielded a blue lightsaber while Yoda and Luke Skywalker wielded theirs in green.

So, if you have a favorite character, and if you want a similar lightsaber as them, this is your chance. Remember to select the theme correctly from beforehand as that will determine the color of your Kyber crystal.

walt disney company - handbuilt lightsabers chart

Selection of Different Parts

Now it’s time to select the materials that will build up the structure of your lightsaber. Based on the theme choice, everyone will receive a separate box full of the necessary parts. You’ll then have to sort them out personally and select the ones you’d like in your lightsaber.

Keep in mind that a gatherer will always remain by the station to guide you and if you need any help, you can ask them questions. Here’s a brief overview of the customizable materials to help you understand the overall process.

  • Hilt – Only one. Not interchangeable.
  • Sleeve – Four options in total. Choose only two.
  • Emitter – Two options in total. Choose only one.
  • Pommel Cap – Same as Emitter.
  • Activation Plate & Switch – Two sets in total. Pick only one.

As for queries regarding ‘how big are the lightsabers at Savi’s Workshop ‘, well since it’s customizable, you can choose from a variety of lengths. But from a general perspective, the lightsaber is about 36-inches in length where the hilt itself is about 31-inches.

A short reminder that even though you have access to extra pieces during the selection period, you cannot take them home with you. You’ll also not be able to exchange them later on. However, if you want more customizable accessories, you can visit the Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities and buy them separately.

Savi's Workshop : Building Your Own Lightsaber Hollywood Studios 12

Final Construction

Finally, it’s time to bask in the glory of your very own lightsaber by putting all the bits and pieces together. If you know what you are doing, you can construct the lightsaber yourself which is more fun. But on the off chance that you cannot, the assigned gatherer will help you through it or do it for you.

Once everyone’s done, you’ll place all of your lightsabers inside a special slot on the station. You’ll find that the lightsaber will instantly attach itself to the respective slot.

Now here comes the most magical part of Savi’s Workshop. The moment that redefined everyone’s childhood. All the lights in the rooms are turned off, and then amidst the suspense and heavy breathing, all the lightsabers light up at once and flood the darkroom with their bright glow.

This is a scene that cannot exactly be described unless you personally get to experience it. But I’ll say this – this specific moment is what that makes all the trouble of waiting absolutely worth it.

And with that, the workshop is officially over. At the time of leaving, you’ll receive a soft padded carrying case alongside the lightsaber so that you can carry it easily.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Lightsaber At Savi’s Workshop?

Even though it doesn’t cost a fortune, Savi’s Workshop still doesn’t come cheap. The cost of Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has increased recently.

From the beginning, the handbuilt lightsabers cost $199, but they now cost $249.99 for experiences booked going forward.

Again, if you want it shipped to your resort, you’ll have to pay an extra fee for that as well.

A Trip to Savi’s Workshop – Worth It or Not?

It’s definitely worth it. Only a true Star Wars fan knows the significance of lightsabers and how precious they are. And there are very few places in the world that can provide such an authentic lightsaber-building experience.

Furthermore, the quality of the lightsabers at Savi’s Workshop is pretty high as well. While the knock-off stores come up with a cheap version of the lightsabers, Savi’s Workshop provides almost a replica of the ones used in the movies.

So, that’s a great incentive to visit the workshop. At the end of the day, it boils down to how immersive the experience was and how much fun you had. And I have to say, the joy in building your very own lightsaber and seeing it glow up right in front of your eyes – is something that makes Savi’s Workshop a really worthwhile experience.

What are your thoughts on Savi’s Workshop ? If you are as passionate about lightsabers as I am, you’ll check out this workshop for yourself. So jot it down on your must do list for Walt Disney World right now and make sure you visit Savi’s the next time you go to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Introduction to Disney Lightsaber options

Each lightsaber theme—Peace and Justice, Power and Control, Elemental Nature, Protection and Defense—offers a connection to the vast universe we’ve come to love.

  • Peace and Justice are reminiscent of the days of the Republic, where heroes fought for the galaxy’s well-being. These lightsabers are forged from the remnants of Jedi temples and fallen starships, symbols of hope and resilience. They speak to those who believe in the light, in doing what’s right for the greater good.
  • Power and Control , on the opposite spectrum, draw from the dark corners of the galaxy where power is the ultimate aim, and control is the means to achieve it. Crafted from materials sourced from Sith homeworlds and ancient temples, they’re for those who are unafraid to explore the depths of their ambition and strength.
  • Elemental Nature connects the wielder to the living Force, through components that are one with nature—Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones, and Rancor teeth. This theme is for the souls deeply in tune with the world around them, understanding the force that flows through all living things.
  • Protection and Defense are steeped in mystery, featuring hilts with ancient symbols and inscriptions that link back to the earliest days of the Jedi and Sith. These lightsabers are for those who see themselves as guardians, keepers of peace and knowledge.

Each theme, distinct in its character, offers a bridge to the Star Wars universe, allowing fans to hold a piece of the story in their hands. Whether drawn to the light, intrigued by the shadow, connected to nature, or inspired by history, there’s a lightsaber that speaks to every heart.

For a deeper dive into these themes and what they represent in the fabric of the Star Wars saga, explore further at Galaxy’s Edge Lightsaber Types . Here, you’ll find not just a lightsaber but a piece of the galaxy far, far away, waiting for you to claim it.

The option of customizing your Lightsaber

Crafting your own lightsaber at Disney’s Galaxy’s Edge is an experience that transcends the ordinary, allowing you to leave with something far greater than a mere souvenir. It’s a deeply personal artifact of your journey through the Star Wars universe, imbued with your essence and story. Here’s a closer look at customizing your Disney lightsaber, from choosing your kyber crystal to assembling a hilt that mirrors your innermost self.

The Heart of Your Lightsaber: Kyber Crystals

At the core of every lightsaber is the kyber crystal, a mystical gem that not only determines the color of your blade but also resonates with the Force.

The selection process is not just about aesthetics; it’s a symbolic act, reflecting your alignment and aspirations within the Star Wars mythos. Available colors include blue, symbolizing bravery and righteousness; green, for wisdom and harmony with the Force; red, a mark of power and passion; and violet, rare and representing balance between light and dark.

The color you choose weaves into the fabric of your lightsaber, making it a reflection of your path as a Force-sensitive being.

Assembling the Hilt: A Reflection of the Self

The hilt of your lightsaber is as personal as the blade it wields.

During the customization process at Savi’s Workshop, you’re presented with a variety of components—emitters, pommel caps, grip sections, and more—each with its own story and significance. As you select these pieces, consider what they represent about you. Are you a guardian, a scholar, a warrior, or a diplomat?

The design elements you choose will not only affect the physical appearance of your lightsaber but also symbolize your role in the galaxy.

Tips for a Unique Lightsaber

  • Reflect on Your Journey : Before you begin, take a moment to reflect on what aspects of the Star Wars saga resonate most deeply with you. Let this introspection guide your choices.
  • Balance Form and Function : While aesthetics are important, consider how each component fits together and feels in your hand. Your lightsaber should be a balance of beauty and practicality.
  • Embrace Symbolism : Each kyber crystal color and hilt component carries its own legacy within the Star Wars universe. Choose those that align with the qualities or characters you admire most.
  • Trust Your Instincts : Much like the Jedi and Sith who came before you, trust in the Force—or your gut instincts. If a particular crystal or hilt part feels right, it probably is.

The Complete Guide to Building a Lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop

Making a Reservation

The first step to building a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop actually begins before you arrive. You can book a reservation for Savi’s Workshop up to 60 days in advance, and we recommend making sure that you do! This is a popular experience, and while walk-ins can be accommodated on occasion, space is very limited.

You can make a reservation on the Disney World website, or through the My Disney Experience App (or the Disneyland App for Disneyland). One big thing to note is that you  will  need a Park Pass reservation and valid ticket. Your reservation for Savi’s will not be enough to grant you entry into the park.

Also of note is a builder can bring in a guest, but only the builder will be able to build their saber. Either the builder or the guest must be at least 14 years old. Disney recommends this activity for guests 5 years of age and older.

disney lightsaber travel

Pricing (and What You Get)

The cost for the building experience and lightsaber is $249.99 plus tax  and there is no Passholder discount available. The price includes one lightsaber, a carrying case, and the building experience for one builder.

The Process

Spoiler warning! This section will include details about the building experience, so if you want it to remain a surprise don’t read ahead.

Check-in begins 15 minutes before your reservation, and if you are bringing a guest, they need to be present for check-in. When you first arrive at the workshop, check in with the gatherer at the counter outside. If you have a reservation, they will confirm that and then collect the $249.99 fee. They will also need to see a photo ID and the credit card you used to reserve your spot.

disney lightsaber travel

You will then review the “scrap metal” collections available and pick the one that appeals to you most. The choices are as follows:

  • Peace and Justice: These scraps come from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships. The Republic-era designs honor the galaxy’s former guardians.
  • Power and Control: These remnants, rumored to be from the Sith homeworld and their abandoned temples, were forged by dark side warriors.
  • Elemental Nature: This style embodies the Force, which is an energy created by all living things, such as Rancor teeth, Cartusion whale bones, and Brylark trees.
  • Protection and Defense: These materials are covered in mysterious motifs and inscriptions. It reconnects users with the ancient wellspring of the Force.

disney lightsaber travel

You’ll receive a pin and credential that will serve as your group number. When it’s time to head inside, your pin will be the key to entering the secret workshop, plus it includes information on which lightsaber design you will be using!

disney lightsaber travel

After you have decided, you will wait your turn to enter the workshop. Note that this wait is outdoors, and while there are some umbrellas, it can be uncomfortable during hot weather or rainy days.

disney lightsaber travel

Builders will be welcomed in groups of around 10, not counting their guests. Once inside, each builder will take their place at a build station. In the center of the workshop, a master-gatherer will introduce themselves as well as their assistants around the room.

During this time a solemn tone is established for the ceremony of crafting a lightsaber. The gatherers go over Jedi history, lightsaber lore, and the power of the Force. It’s a good introduction (for those unfamiliar with Star Wars canon and legend), and effectively sets the mood.

disney lightsaber travel

Next, you will learn about the different colors of the Kyber crystals, which are the Force-attuned crystals that are at the heart of every lightsaber. The master-gatherer will ask everyone to close their eyes and envision which color crystal they want, and their assistants will go around the workshop letting each builder select one.

disney lightsaber travel

The master-gatherer will provide some instructions on how to put the lightsaber together, and then you will begin to build! The hilt pieces you selected earlier will be delivered to your build station by the assistants and they will help everyone build their lightsabers correctly. Your hilt kit will contain:

  • 4 sleeves (you will pick 2)
  • 2 emitters (you will pick 1)
  • 2 pommel caps (you will pick 1)
  • 2 sets of activation plates and switches (you will pick 1 set)

disney lightsaber travel

First, you will insert the crystal, then build the hilt around it. Once you are finished the assistants will take your completed hilt and attach it to the blade. Upon hilt completion, the unused parts will be collected by the assistants and returned to Savi’s inventory (these are not included in your lightsaber package).

disney lightsaber travel

Once everyone is finished assembling their hilts, this is when the bonding ceremony begins, which is a wow moment of the whole lightsaber building experience. At the conclusion of this, the blade of the lightsaber is ‘magically’ attached, and everyone raises and activates their lightsabers in unison as the voice of Yoda enters the chamber.

At the end, you will receive a carrying case for your lightsaber. If you wish to further customize your lightsaber, you can find additional pieces for sale at Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities .

disney lightsaber travel

Other Things to Know:

  • The experience area is limited to the builder and one guest—at least one person in the party must be age 14 or older.
  • The experience takes place indoors. The workshop is an enclosed space with low lighting levels.
  • To avoid being charged a cancellation fee, make sure to cancel at least one day before your reservation.

disney lightsaber travel

At $250 for the experience, Savi’s Workshop is truly memorable. You’re paying not just for the souvenir, but the experience. However, this is not something we’d consider a “toy,” but more of a collector’s item. So, if you’re thinking of doing this with your five-year-old (or even your seven-year-old), they might enjoy building their own saber in Tatooine Traders or in Disney Springs for a fraction of the price.

So you got a lightsaber at Disney's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. Can you take it on a plane?

disney lightsaber travel

The lightsaber is among the most powerful weapons in the galaxy. It can deflect lasers, dismember limbs and unite people under a single cause.

But the lightsaber’s most important virtue is this: It fits inside an airplane's overhead bin.

Yet this Jedi-level convenience comes at a cost for air travelers. The lightsaber counts as a carry-on item. And since you're typically allowed only one carry-on item (aside from your small personal item that goes under the seat) those who want to put a lightsaber in the overhead bin will have to check any other baggage they have.

Officials from American and Southwest airlines told The Arizona Republic  that the 36-inch-long toys will fit in the bin, but they count as your carry-on item.

United Airlines did not respond to an email.

Since the May 31 opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland , guests have formed long lines in front of Savi’s Workshop, where up to 14 people at a time may build lightsabers. They cost is $200, plus tax.

Unlike many lightsabers before it, this high-end version is one piece with a non-collapsible blade, which can make it difficult to pack. The sabers are sturdier than most, but they're still breakable and should be treated carefully when stowing them.

What happens before you get to your gate? The Transportation Security Administration has long allowed lightsabers on flights, though the policy largely dealt with plastic toys with telescoping blades.

Disney’s lightsabers are more formidable, with metal hilts and solid blades. TSA says the tech-based swords are starting to show up at airports and have been determined to pose no threat. Not even red sabers, the color wielded by such dark lords at Darth Vader and Kylo Ren.

(TSA also permits the Harry Potter-style magic wands sold at Universal Studios in Hollywood and Florida and incapable of casting the very popular seatius upgradium spell.)

Lightsabers built at Savi's Workshop at Disneyland include a specially designed padded tote, perfect for slinging across your back and walking like a Jedi. Those bearing sabers can draw considerable attention at Galaxy's Edge and are often asked to show off their creations. Carefully waving a lightsaber is acceptable at Disneyland, but dueling is very dark-side and can get you removed.

Once you get your lightsaber home, it begs the question, "Now what?" Outside of Halloween and comic conventions, most people have little use for an illuminated weapon capable of inflicting no more than light bruising (save for putting someone's eye out, as any mom would warn).

However, the plasma-like glow of a lightsaber is perfect for setting the mood for a romantic dinner, or it could be the coolest nightlight on the block.

Building a Lightsaber at Disney World in Savi's Workshop Review and Overview

disney lightsaber travel

If you've ever dreamed of becoming a Jedi and having a lightsaber of your own, you will definitely want to stop by Savi's Workshop at Hollywood Studios. This unique shop is not only a place where you can build and take home your very own Lightsaber, but you'll experience a Jedi ceremony that is unlike anything else.

Here I will talk about how Savi's Workshop works, the pricing, and my review of this one of a kind experience.

How Do I Make a Reservation to Build a Lightsaber?

To build a lightsaber you will first want to make advanced reservations. This is an extremely popular stop in Hollywood Studios, and spaces are limited. You can make a reservation in advance on Disney Website . Reservations can be made 60 days in advance.

You will be required to use a credit card to hold your reservation, but you will not be charged at the time of booking. However, you will be charged the entire price of the lightsaber if you are a no-show to your reservation. So if you can't make it be sure to cancel online, call Disney to cancel, or stop by Savi's in person to cancel.

If you are unable to find any open reservations, you can check for availability in person. There will be a number of walk up spots open, but they are first come first serve and are not guaranteed. I would recommend you arrive to the park early if you plan on trying to do a walk in Lightsaber build.

Keep in mind your reservation is for one person plus one guest. Your entire party will not be allowed to watch the build. Cast Members will make exceptions for small children who would otherwise be left unattended, but it is at their discretion.

What does it Cost to Build a Lightsaber?

Building a lightsaber at Savi's Workshop costs $249.99 plus tax. There are no discounts with Disney annual pass or DVC for this experience, but you can use those discounts for any of the extras or accessories that you purchase.

The price above includes the building experience (which I'll go over below), the customized lightsaber, and a carrying case.

You can also purchase a stand for your lightsaber for $25 or a belt clip for $18.

You will pay for your experience and these optional extras when you check in for your reservation.

How Does Building a Lightsaber Work?

Lightsaber build

When you arrive for your reservation at Savi's Workshop you'll be given a menu of options to chose from for your lightsaber. Your options include:

Savi's Workshop Lightsaber options

Once you make your selection you are asked to pay for your lightsaber in advance. You are then given a pin to wear that symbolizes the theme of lightsaber that you have chosen. You are also given a color coded card that will represent the group of builders you are with.

Once your color card is called you are brought inside the workshop and given a work station. You are guided by The Gatherers (the Cast Members working in the shop) in the building process. This part is more a show. You hear the story of Jedi masters before you. And learn about the building process and why it is so significant. Any Star Wars fan would greatly appreciate the attention to detail and story.

Lightsaber kyber crystal

Then it's time to start building. The Gatherers working the shop will bring you a tray of parts that were "salvaged" for you in order to build this lightsaber. They help you chose a kyber crystal (which is what brings your lightsaber to life, and essentially determines the color and sounds your lightsaber makes). They then help you assemble based on the pieces that you chose.

salvaged lightsaber parts

The Gatherers will then have you place your lightsaber in a special docking station. Moments later the top of the station opens and your lightsaber is revealed with its blade lit. The blade is 31" long and is made of glass.

You can pick any number of combinations when you are building your lightsaber. And chances are every builder around you will have a different and unique lightsaber.

Any unused pieces are returned (you do not keep the unused pieces that you did not pick in the building process). You remove your lightsaber and are then given a travel case.

Can I Ship My Lightsaber Home?

If you want to ship your lightsaber home, you can have it shipped from Disney World to your house.

You have a few options to do this. If you are in Galaxy's Edge you can head over to the Droid Depot to have them ship it for you. You can head over to Dok Ondar's Den of Antiquities to have it shipped. Or you can head to your resort's gift shop location. Rates vary, but we paid $18 for shipping from Orlando to the Chicago area.

If you decide to try and bring your lightsaber on your flight home, the TSA does allow them. But you'll want to double check with your airline before you go.

Who Would Enjoy This Experience?

Building a lightsaber at Savi's Workshop is an amazing experience for any Star Wars fan. This is definitely more of an adult experience. While Disney only requires builders be 5 and up, I personally would not recommend this for children under the age of 10 (give or take depending on your child).

The lightsaber itself is NOT a toy, and would not be appropriate for a child looking for a lightsaber that they can play with. This would be an experience more for someone looking for a display piece. Toy lightsabers can be purchased at a number of stores in Hollywood Studios at much cheaper prices.

If you are looking for an alternative that is more child friendly, or something that you can play with more, I would recommend building a droid at the Droid Depot instead.

Getting Extra or Replacement Lightsaber Parts

When you build your lightsaber you pick a theme, and are given a variety of parts based on that theme. But what do you do if you are torn between two different parts or styles? Or if something happens and you need a replacement part for your lightsaber?

If you want additional pieces for the hilt (or base) of your lightsaber, you can head back over to Savi's Workshop and ask to see their junk pieces.

You can also go to Dok Ondar's Den of Antiquities to purchase additional Kyber Crystals to change the color of your lightsaber.

Review of Savi's Workshop

My husband Kurt and I went to Savi's Workshop to build a custom lightsaber. We had our 2 year old with us, and although the rules are only one builder and one guest per reservation, the Cast Members let us bring her with for our reservation.

We chose the Peace and Justice themed lightsaber. We were given a pin to wear to show our choice, and a card for entry in to the workshop. We then waited to be called for our turn to build.

While we sat and waited, we saw Kylo Ren and a group of Storm Troopers walking towards Savi's Workshop. The Cast Members at the workshop shouted that Kylo Ren was coming, and any and all discussions of lightsabers ceased. Kylo Ren commented to his Storm Troopers that it was "nothing but a junk shop" and they left.

I found that level of detail to be incredibly fun. This was more than just a souvenir. This was an entire experience that included Cast Members working outside the shop, characters roaming the land, and the guests as builders.

We were then called in to the shop, and were given a work space. All builders are placed in a workspace that circles the room. The Cast Members working in the shop, called Gatherers, then tell a dramatic story of the history and importance of building your own lightsaber as a part of your Jedi training. This story is more than just a background on lightsabers. It is a full on show. There is music and lighting, and the telling is very fun and dramatic. It truly builds anticipation for the experience.

Once we were familiar with the importance of this ritual, we were guided by The Gatherers in the building process. We placed the purple Kyber Crystal we chose in the hilt, and then select pieces to complete the build. We were then told to place the hilt in a station, and the Gatherers built up anticipation as we waited for the final step of the build.

The station then opened and our lightsaber, complete with lit purple blade, were revealed. Everyone then lifted their lightsabers at the same time, which was amazing to see in person.

Overall this experience was unlike anything else. It was part show, it was building a custom piece, it was a childhood dream fulfilled. It was everything we hoped it would be. And I am not someone who ever thought that I would spend $200 on a lightsaber.

With a price tag that high, you might be wondering if it's worth the price for you. I would say it's worth it if you are a hug Star Wars fan, if you dreamed of building or having your very own lightsaber since childhood, if you have always wanted a cos-play or collector level piece, or if you love these truly unique and one of a kind type experiences. Because truly each guest is getting a difference experience with a lightsaber build at Savi's Workshop.

We will talk about the different options for building your own Star Wars lightsaber at Disney, the storyline of this Star Wars lightsaber store plus our review of building our own Star Wars lightsaber at Disneyland.

In this planning guide:

What is the Star Wars Lightsaber Disney Experience?

Essentially, guests can get the chance to build their own Star Wars lightsaber with guidance from the workshop Master. Guests can customize and build their own lightsabers and learn the ways of the Jedi during this experience. This is a popular interactive experience for both kids and adults, especially Star Wars fans.

Guests will choose four disciplines for their Star Wars lightsaber: Power and Justice, Power and Control, Elemental and Nature, or Protection and Defense. Each one of these disciplines offers different styles for building your own lightsaber so it helps to review these before your visit to decide which Star Wars lightsaber is best for you.

After that, guests will choose their kyber crystal for their Star Wars lightsaber which determines what color their lightsaber will be. The workshop Master will give then give guests a set of 10 lightsaber pieces to combine to create your custom Star Wars lightsaber.

This is more than just shopping for a Star Wars Lightsaber but a fully immersive experience that will truly make any Padawan feel that they've stepped into the Star Wars universe to build their own Star Wars lightsaber at Disney. The Star Wars lightsaber shop only holds 14 builders at a time and the experience is 15 minutes long.

The culmination of the build ends with a small show that highlights the significance that lightsabers hold in the Star Wars universe.

Build Your Own Lightsaber Disney Reservations

Star Wars Lightsaber

For guests visiting Savi's Workshop reservations are required to build your own Star Wars lightsaber! Here is everything you need to know about making a reservation at Savi's Workshop at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

This experience is popular and reservations are recommended if you want to build your own Star Wars lightsaber.

Savi's Workshop, the location where you build your Star Wars lightsaber, is located in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in both Disneyland and Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.

These locations are exactly the same and there is no notable difference in either lightsaber building experience.

Disneyland Savi's Workshop Reservations

  • Guests can make a reservation up to 60 days in advance online or via the Disneyland app.
  • Occasionally, a few same-day reservations will be released at 7AM PST each morning.

Hollywood Studios Savi's Workshop Reservations

  • Guests can make a reservation up to 60 days in advance online or via the My Experience app.

This experience becomes even more in demand during peak times of the year (think holidays, spring beak, etc.) so make sure to book as soon as your 60-day window opens up for the best chance at securing a reservation.

  • A credit card number is required at the time of booking. A $249.99 per lightsaber no-show fee per builder will be applied to such credit card if you fail to check in for your reservation. No cancellations are allowed for same-day reservations. You will have to cancel 24 hours in advance to avoid being charged.

  • $249.99 per lightsaber, plus tax
  • Carry case included
  • Additional customization items can be purchased at  Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities
  • Age Recommendation: 5+

Is the Star Wars Lightsaber Worth the Price?

The quick answer is YES. The experience of building your own Disney lightsaber is one that cannot be beat. During my experience, I enjoyed the lightsaber building at Disney with a group of close Star Wars friends and we all agreed it was one of the best experiences Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge offers. I also revised this experience later when my son built his first lightsaber and it was just as good the second time around. After doing this experience twice now, I am confident this is money well spent because of the lightsabers we have to display on our walls but also the memories that were made. Be sure to keep scrolling to read my full review to see why I consider this experience worth it.

Are the Disney Star Wars Lightsabers Good Quality?

As for the quality of the Disney Star Wars lightsabers, they are lesser than more high-end brands like Hasbro or Neosabers which offer significantly more bright LED sabers which higher quality materials. However, Hasbro lightsabers start at just under $300 and can go up in price so these sabers are a cost higher than the Disney Star Wars lightsabers and without the building experience. If you compare with the popular Neopixel lightsabers originally sold by Neosabers, these lightsabers average around $350 and can go as high as $600 depending on the character.

But as Disney keeps raising prices (the Disney Star Wars lightsaber originally started around $200) the “worth it” answers get a bit more subjective for quality as the lightsabers are becoming comparable to the cost of these higher-end lightsabers made by Hasbro and other companies.

However, Disney does stand by their quality when it comes to their lightsabers. This is why it is important to keep your receipt! If you have any issues with the quality of your lightsaber after your experience, you can often get a replacement part. My lightsaber had a defective battery compartment that did not allow me to open it when the batteries died and Disney was able to ship me a replacement part as long as I provided proof of purchase. That is great customer service, especially since I reached out to them months after I built the lightsaber.

Aside from the quality of the Star Wars lightsaber offered by Disney, you need to also consider the experience that comes with this lightsaber which is one of a kind and is worth doing at least once for every Star Wars fan. That is something that is a bit harder to put a price on.

Star Wars Lightsaber Design Choices

Like all the experiences in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the storyline to building your own Star Wars lightsaber aims to be fully immersive.

This secretive group of people who run this shop, the Gathers, have dedicated their lives to restoring balance in the galaxy by passing on their knowledge of the Jedi and the Force. Once the Gatherers know you are to be trusted, they will be willing to share their great collection of stories, kyber crystals, and other Star Wars lightsaber parts from around the galaxy. These ‘Keepers of the Force' are ready to pass down the knowledge to those visiting Batuu. The character the shop is named after, Savi, was one of the original Gatherers and a friend to Lor San Tekka (whom we briefly met at the beginning of Star Wars: A Force Awakens) and his salvage business is a front to hide his mission of guiding the next generation of Force wielders.

Star Wars Lightsaber Themes and Options

There are four different styles of Star Wars lightsaber options to pick from when building your own lightsaber at Disney:

Peace and Justice: Salvaged from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships, these lightsaber pieces were created for Force wielders of the Republic era. The simple designs reflect the commitment to the devout life of those whom they were created by – the Jedi Order – the once guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy.

Power and Control: Reclaimed from the ashes of the rumored Sith homeworld and abandoned Sith temples, these lightsaber pieces were originally forged by the Sith of their time. Characterized by sharp and strong forms, these pieces showcase the brutality and relentlessness of the Sith’s insatiable desire for power and control.

Elemental Nature : As we have been told, The Force is an energy field created by all living things; it surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together. These lightsaber pieces are born of that same Force. They are as unique as the user and as the elements of nature: the wood from a Brylark tree, a bone of the Cartusion whale or even a tooth from a Rancor.

Protection and Defense: Cultivated from a time forgotten, these earliest lightsaber pieces contain designs and inscriptions that are shrouded in mystery. Believed to be created for protection and defense, conferring anonymity and symbolizing emotional detachment, a lightsaber made from these pieces reconnects the user with the most ancient wellspring of the Force.

Star Wars Lightsaber Kyber Crystal Colors

There are four different Star Wars lightsaber kyber crystals to choose from. Kyber crystals are essentially what color your lightsaber will light up as. Blue, green, and violet have all been associated with Jedi while red has been associated with the Sith. Here are some popular Star Wars characters and their lightsaber colors.

  • Blue: Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Leia Organa, Rey, Ben Solo
  • Green: Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Ahsoka Tano
  • Violet:  Mace Windu
  • Red: Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Kylo Ren

You can also purchase kyber crystals in yellow and white along with the other colors at Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities for $17.99 each if you want to change your lightsaber color. White is often associated with Ahsoka Tano once she leaves the Jedi order and Rey switches to a yellow lightsaber at the end of the sequel saga.

Star Wars Lightsaber Meet Ups

Star Wars Lightsaber Included Parts

And here are all the pieces of the Star Wars lightsaber that you will use to build your own lightsaber at Disney:

  • kyber crystal, which is available in red, blue, green or violet.
  • 4 sleeves (pick 2)
  • 2 emitters (pick 1)
  • 2 pommel caps (pick 1)
  • 2 sets of activation plates and switches (pick 1 set)

Upon hilt completion, the unused parts will be collected by the Gatherers and returned to Savi’s inventory. These are not included in your Star Wars lightsaber package.

Finally, the Gatherers will masterfully connect your hilt to a 36” lightsaber blade so you’re ready for anything the galaxy puts in your path! Keep reading to see why building your own lightsaber at Disney is worth the hype!

Customizable Disney Star Wars Lightsabers

These Star Wars lightsabers from Savi's Workshop are also built with a universal blade and kyber crystal system meaning that you can later customize your lightsaber and purchase replacement blades (some are offered in shorter lengths) and also change the kyber crystal if you want a different color lightsaber.

Guests also have the option of purchasing “scrap metal” to further customize their lightsaber builds. These extra lightsaber pieces are just further options to change the hilt or combine different build designs together. If you go outside Savi's Workshop and ask for available “scrap metal” they will show you what other options they have which is usually the extra hilt pieces from the different lightsaber styles. Each piece of scrap metal costs $24.99 or two pieces for $39.99

Legacy Lightsabers vs. Build Your Own

Legacy lightsaber

Leia Organa Legacy Lightsaber

There are two different types of Star Wars lightsabers sold at Disney: the build-your-own lightsaber at Savi's Workshop and the Legacy Lightsabers sold at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

These lightsabers work nearly identically with many (not all, some exceptions!) offering the option to customize with different kyber crystals and lightsaber blades.

Star Wars Legacy Lightsabers

The main difference is the Legacy Lightsabers are designed to be specific lightsabers of well-known Jedi and Sith in the Star Wars Universe. Some of these Legacy Lightsabers have also been released as limited edition, collector items with well-designed cases to match.

Battle of the Heroes Lightsaber

You can see an example of one of these in the above picture. The Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi Battle of Heroes set which plays Duel of the Fates when you open it.

The limited edition Legacy Lightsaber sets sell out fast and are extremely popular. These limited edition Star Wars lightsabers are often sold on ShopDisney and released in the parks. You can expect long, long lines for Dok Ondar's at opening when these lightsabers are released and cast members will limit occupancy in the store during these releases.

Build Your Own Disney Lightsaber Review

I did the Savi's Workshop experience with a group of dedicated Star Wars fans at the Disneyland Resort and it was like a spiritual experience if you enjoy Star Wars. Here is my Savi's Workshop review to help you get an idea of what this experience is like to build your own Star Wars lightsaber.

The Savi's Workshop experience is hands down one of my favorite things in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge! I made a reservation on the Disneyland website for my group- I decided to do the reservation for the evening so that way when we emerged with our Star Wars lightsabers it would be dark so they'd be glowing extra bright for photos.

Savi's Workshop Review

This is where you will check in for the experience

The check-in process was pretty simple, we checked in and then proceeded to each pay for our Star Wars lightsabers. Even though my card was used to guarantee the reservation, it wasn't required to use that same card to purchase all of the Star Wars lightsabers. We were easily able to pay individually and I paid for mine with a Disney gift card.

Savi's Workshop Review

At the checkout, the options for the different lightsabers are displayed. You can also look in the bins located next to the stand before you pay.

When you get to the register, you will be asked to pick your type of Star Wars lightsaber so make sure you're ready to make that decision. You will be given the corresponding pin that matches your lightsaber choice and be led to the waiting area with your group.

Savi's Workshop Review

I chose the elemental nature.

Savi's Workshop Review

The corresponding pin for my elemental nature lightsaber.

Savi's Workshop Review

The card I was given to give to the cast member in the waiting area I was led to next.

Savi's Workshop Review

The waiting area to enter the workshop is gated off- you won't be allowed to enter until the group before you goes in and you've paid for your lightsabers.

When it's time to enter, one of the cast members will come retrieve everyone to build their Star Wars lightsaber. This is where the immersion truly begins- the cast member we had was so perfectly in character and remained in character for every single moment of the experience. After we reassured her we weren't working for the First Order and were indeed, just here for ‘scraps,' she led us all inside.

Savi's Workshop Review

Notice the details as you walk in.

Savi's Workshop Review

The light is really dim with low lights above and candles lit along the walls.

Once inside the room, we were able to all get our spots at the table and I easily felt that we had enough room. My son had plenty of space to hang out behind me with his droid. Because I had already fully researched my type of Star Wars lightsaber (I chose Elemental) and the pieces, I had already made up my mind on what I wanted so I was done building mine before many of the other people.

Savi's Workshop Review

The cast members in this experience are fantastic!

Savi's Workshop Review

The table area where you build your lightsabers.

That was okay as I had plenty of time to take in the details of the room. They keep it darkly lit with candles (made out of Tauntaun wax, they told us) surrounding the walls and the cast member leading the experience imparts upon you the wisdom of the force and the responsibility of wielding the legendary Star Wars lightsaber. It was amazing and was quite easy enough to close your eyes and pretend for a moment that you are a Jedi!

Savi's Workshop Review

You chose your kyber crystal first- I picked purple.

Savi's Workshop Review

The pieces you don't use are not included in your purchase- the cast member takes them away after.

Savi's Workshop Review

My finished work of art.

I won't spoil too much of the experience of building your own lightsaber at Disney, watch the video at the end of my Savi's Workshop review if you want that, but the moment when your Star Wars lightsabers light up is truly magical. Be ready to shed a tear, if you're a hardcore Star Wars fan like our group is. The experience altogether took about 30 minutes including the time to check in. Once it's finished, they give each of you a carrying case for the Star Wars lightsaber and you're sent on your way!

Savi's Workshop Review- Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

I'm not gonna lie, I felt pretty darn cool walking around with mine. Here's one of the poses with the Star Wars lightsabers the PhotoPass photographers may suggest you do- they also had me do mine holding it straight up in the air, one with my back facing the camera looking at it ‘Rey style,' and many group pictures of all of us holding them in various poses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy Star Wars lightsabers for children? Again, that depends. If money is no object, then why not! But the hilts are heavy metal and they definitely are heavier to wield than the general plastic toy. I did not purchase one for my son this visit and instead opted to get him a droid. When he turns 10 next year, I told him he'd get one then. But every parent is different- just know that they are heavy for smaller kids to try and hold.

Can I bring Star Warslightsaber on the airplane? The airlines have officially said that they consider the lightsabers to be ‘carry on' items . They easily fit in overhead bins. On our flight at the SNA airport, the airline didn't even look twice at mine (even though our basic economy ticket via United doesn't allow any carry-ons) and I was even able to put it at my feet during the flight since I removed the hilt prior to boarding . TSA was also easy to go through , again they didn't look twice. I think if you're flying out of the SNA or LAX airports, they've already seen quite a few at this point. I wouldn't stress too much about it! It definitely will not fit in many suitcases because even after the hilt is removed the blade is 34 inches long.

How long did building a Star Wars lightsaber take? From the time of check-in to completion it was about 30 minutes total.

Are Disney Star Wars lightsaber good quality? Yes, they absolutely are! If you do a little research about the typical cost of lightsaber replicas from Star Wars fan websites or comic cons you'll see that the price of these lightsabers is actually pretty cheap  in comparison to others you can find.

How many people can watch me build a Star Wars lighstaber?   Each paying guest making a Star Wars lightsaber can bring two non-paying guests to watch the experience.

Does the card I put down to hold the reservation have to be the one used to purchase the lightsaber?  A credit/debit card is required to hold the reservation but when you can arrive you can pay with any payment method you want. I was able to use my card to hold the reservation for four people and then we all paid individually.

Will Star Wars lightsabers fit in lockers? Can I bring them on rides? No, they don't fit in lockers, and on some rides you will not be able to carry them on. Cast members are well versed now in handling this and for the rides we weren't able to carry them on, like Matterhorn, we were able to do a ‘Rider Swap' to ensure we all got to ride. If you build them earlier in the day I do recommend taking the time to run them back to your hotel because they are hard to carry around with you.

Savi's Workshop Review- Tips and Tricks

  • If you're like me and have a hard time making up your mind on the spot at experiences like these- research the Star Wars lightsaber designs online first. They do give you at least ten minutes to build your saber but if you've never seen the designs until that moment it may not feel like enough time. I felt pretty prepared after looking at numerous pictures of all the designs before we came so I had my heart set on the elemental nature one and the specific choices in that design itself.
  • Stay off your phone and be in the moment for this experience. I'm lucky that I had my son, photographer extraordinaire, taking pictures for me for our site so I could focus on the moment.
  • Allow some time afterward to take some PhotoPass photos with your lightsabers. The photographers were great with our group and took tons of pictures with lots of cool poses in front of the Millennium Falcon.
  • Be aware that the Star Wars lightsabers do not fit in the lockers and you will have to carry them afterward if you don't plan on returning to the hotel. The cast members at the Matterhorn Bobsleds let us ‘Rider Switch' with ours so we went in turns while half the group rode and the other half held them and then we swapped. When it came to Big Thunder Mountain, the cast members didn't even say anything and they fit fine at the bottom of the ride vehicle. They were a pain to carry around though but since we did them at the end of the day it wasn't a big deal.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience and easily one of my favorite parts of my visit to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. I mounted my Star Wars lightsaber on the wall (you can easily find cheap ones on Amazon) and it makes for a great display. And when we go to comic cons, I can easily incorporate it into my Jedi outfits. (I said I was nerdy, right?)

  • 4 sleeves (pick 2)
  • 2 emitters (pick 1)
  • 2 pommel caps (pick 1)
  • 2 sets of activation plates and switches (pick 1 set)

Upon hilt completion, the unused parts will be collected by the Gatherers and returned to Savi’s inventory. These are not included with your lightsaber package.

We’ve Got Good News and Bad News About Disney World’s Lightsaber Souvenirs

By Robin Burks Leave a Comment

There are PLENTY of things to do in Disney World if you’re a  Star Wars fan.

disney lightsaber travel

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge

First, you can immerse yourself in a planet that resides in a galaxy far, far away by visiting Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios . You can even eat Star Wars -themed food  and shop in a  Star Wars -themed market. If you’re feeling fast, you could even try and pilot the Millennium Falcon. Over at Star Tours, you can help a Rebel spy escape to freedom. You can also build your own lightsaber, but something has changed in that experience.

First, we have to point out that we’re not referring to the Lightsaber Experience at Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which can be pricey. We’re referring to the Build-Your-Own Lightsaber station you’ll find in Tatooine Traders . Granted, the quality of these lightsabers isn’t as good as what you’ll get at Savi’s, but it’s a great, inexpensive alternative to make a custom lightsaber, especially for kids.

disney lightsaber travel

Build-Your-Own Lightsaber at Tattooine Traders

Well, now, you can experience the same thing WITHOUT a park ticket. If you visit Once Upon A Toy in Disney Springs , you’ll find a brand new Build-Your-Own Lightsaber Experience there.

disney lightsaber travel

Build-Your-Own Lightsaber in Disney Springs

It works exactly like the one in Disney Springs. You’ll choose the kind of lightsaber you want to build. You have four choices: a single lightsaber, a deluxe single lightsaber, a double lightsaber, or a deluxe double lightsaber.

Choose your lightsaber

Then, you’ll begin choosing your parts. You’ll start by choosing an end cap or adapter. End caps are for single lightsabers, and adapters are for double lightsabers.

Then, you’ll choose your chassis for your blade color. Note that these are the expandable blades.

You’ll also choose your lightsaber sleeve.

Then, you can choose your emitter. You can choose a standard emitter or a deluxe emitter.

We have to warn you, though, that the cost of this experience has gone up by $5. You’ll now pay  $34.99 for a single lightsaber, $39.99 for a deluxe single lightsaber, $49.99 for a double lightsaber, and $50.99 for a deluxe double lightsaber.

You put all the parts together yourself as you go through the process, but if you ever have any questions, you can always ask a Cast Member to help.

With the city of Anaheim unanimously voting to pass DisneylandForward , the Disneyland Resort will be forever changed.

Twice in the last 69 years, Disneyland has been significantly transformed. Four years after the park opened in 1959, Disneyland added its monorail, the Matterhorn Bobsleds and a submarine ride and expanded Autopia. It was a message that would begin to fulfill Walt Disney’s promise that Disneyland would never be completed.

Anaheim, CA - March 11: Visitors walk down Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Monday, March 11, 2024. (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times)

Huge Disneyland expansion to add new rides, restaurants and hotels wins OK

Anaheim City Council approves a plan to amend zoning rules to allow Disneyland to build new rides, hotels and stores within its existing footprint.

April 17, 2024

More than that, however, it revealed that Disneyland would continue to look to the future. Disneyland in 1959 showed its guests possibilities — a transportation system in the monorail that could remake urban communities, a tease of the freeway system that would reshape travel and a glimpse at the sort of deep-sea excursions only a lucky few could witness. The Matterhorn, while inspired by the film “Third Man on the Mountain,” also was meant to be a transportive experience, to not only bring to Disneyland a new kind of thrill ride but give visitors a taste of international adventure.

Disneyland’s second reimagining came much later. In 2001 the Walt Disney Co. would open Disney California Adventure, the Grand Californian hotel and the Downtown Disney District. These additions would attempt to make Disneyland, the company’s original park, one that could, in theory, rival Florida’s Walt Disney World by becoming a resort that could demand multiday stays.

This expansion succeeded as well, but not overnight.

A map illustrates the area around Disneyland in Anaheim

The original vision of Disney California Adventure proved to be lackluster, relying heavily on on-the-shelf rides and lacking emotion-driven experiences that take visitors out of their daily life. While the Grand Californian is a Craftsman-inspired triumph, Downtown Disney is in the midst of a transformation and is still attempting to outgrow its reputation as a home for chains and midtier eateries.

And now we’re entering a new era of possibilities, one that likely will look much different from the prior two. Modern Disney is centered on intellectual property — or IP, in corporate speak — rather than Walt-era idealism, and the most tantalizing prospects of DisneylandForward center on building around existing structures rather than erecting a new park.

With DisneylandForward, the company won the flexibility to redesign the resort. Zoning rules will be amended so that Disney can add new attractions alongside hotels on the west side of Disneyland Drive. These will, if they come to fruition, likely be extensions of Disneyland or Disney California Adventure rather than a third park. Additionally, a new shopping, dining and entertainment district can be created to the southeast on what is currently the Toy Story parking lot at Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard.

Company brass and the DisneylandForward materials have offered teases of what could be built. Most of these have centered on recent expansions at Disney’s international parks, such as the World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland or Zootopia at Shanghai Disney Resort. There’s been little ideological talk about the future of Disneyland, as the focus has centered squarely on popular properties and franchises rather than the resort’s status as a cultural hub and gathering space.

But DisneylandForward came with a pledge. The Walt Disney Co. has promised to spend a minimum of $1.9 billion on Disneyland attractions, lodging, entertainment, shopping and dining in the next 10 years. That money can go quickly, with modern attractions costing sometimes in the high six figures, but the Walt Disney Co. also is in the midst of doubling down on its theme parks. Disney has guaranteed to spend $60 billion over the next 10 years in its experiences division, with at least half of that total dedicated to parks and resorts, according to a recent SEC filing .

It’s safe to say that the next 10 years will shape Disneyland for decades to come. While there’s much to be revealed, there are, perhaps, some safe bets. Here are a few educated guesses as to what to expect with an expanded Disneyland in the near term.

Get ready for Pandora

DisneylandForward materials reference everything from “Tangled” to “Peter Pan” to “Tron” as possible experiences that could come to Anaheim. One word, however, is missing, and it’s one that’s been regularly referenced by Disney brass in recent weeks: “Avatar.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned it at a recent shareholder meeting, even sharing the “Avatar” concept art, which was referred to as “inspirational artwork.” Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, wrote in a blog post after the shareholder event that further news on Disneyland-related attractions such as the “Avatar” experience was tied to the approval of DisneylandForward.

“We are excited about the stories our guests could experience at Walt’s original theme park destination after approval of DisneylandForward — including the chance to experience all-new Avatar adventures with a visit to Pandora,” D’Amaro wrote . And last night in Anaheim, Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock again teased “Avatar” at the DisneylandForward hearing and vote. Finally, one of Disney’s most respected theme park creatives even posted the “Avatar” concept art on Instagram , expressing the hope of sharing more on the project in the future.

Consider a large-scale “Avatar”-inspired land all but a done deal, and the art shared for Disneyland isn’t an exact replica of Florida’s Pandora — The World of Avatar, which resides in that coast’s Animal Kingdom park. Now where to put it? Expect Pandora to be bound for Disney California Adventure. There’s been speculation that it could replace the area currently served by water ride Grizzly River Run or move into a largely vacant slot of Hollywood Land, but neither is ideal. The latter requires a rerouting of the monorail, and Grizzly River Run remains a popular attraction.

Here’s betting it’s positioned in one of the DCA expansion areas near the Pixar Place Hotel, as that would allow the company to give the James Cameron property a plethora of space, especially if Disney must hide a large show building behind an illusion of floating mountains.

Colorful renderings of potential hotel and dining space.

Expect more hotel options

With Disneyland lacking the acreage of Florida’s Walt Disney World, hotel prices in Anaheim are at a premium. Rooms for the recently revamped Pixar Place Hotel — Anaheim’s “budget” option — can routinely top $500 per night. More hotel space is needed, and if Disneyland goes all-in on “Avatar,” expect lodging and more entertainment options to follow close behind. Disney has long touted development of the Toy Story Lot as prime space for hotel, dining and entertainment modeled after Florida’s Disney Springs district.

The DisneylandForward materials mention the land as “the perfect location to cater to locals, conventioneers, hotel and Disneyland Resort guests with restaurants, hotels, live music, shopping, ticketed shows and theme park experiences.” A new proposed parking structure to the north would solve the parking issue, and Disney has done extensive research on this already, as it was part of an earlier, pre-pandemic planned development known as the “Eastern Gateway.”

Walkways to and from the new parking structure would connect the current resort to the new entertainment area. And while fans may want Disney to rapidly fill the available space with theme park attractions, if the resort is planning to increase capacity it’s first going to need a spot for those guests to park. Additionally, Iger at a recent media event said the company likely would hold back some of its theme park funds so the organization could move on the popularity of new films or franchises.

“We actually have a fairly good idea in the near term of what’s being built, but we’re purposefully not going to allocate it all,” Iger said. “Because who knows? In five years we can end up with a giant hit movie — think ‘Frozen’ — that we may want to mine essentially as an attraction, or a hotel or restaurant in our parks. So you want to maintain some flexibility.”

What about ‘Frozen’s’ Arendelle? Or a ‘Coco’-themed experience?

Beyond “Avatar,” which seems a sure thing as it’s been mentioned by Iger on multiple occasions, any future aspects of DisneylandForward become pure speculation. But a couple of franchises may have higher priority than others.

Disney now has a “Frozen” attraction in Walt Disney World, a land in Hong Kong and experiences in the works for Disneyland Paris and Tokyo DisneySea. Walt Disney Imagineering, the company’s secretive arm devoted to theme park experiences, clearly has done the work on bringing “Frozen” to life in physical spaces, and it stands to reason that expansions to the original Disneyland Park, with its fairy-tale feel, would go more of a Fantasyland-inspired route.

What’s more, re-creating Arendelle in the expansion plots located near the Disneyland Hotel would give Disney the opportunity to construct a second castle, as any extensive changes to park centerpiece Sleeping Beauty Castle are prohibited due to structural limitations . The enduring popularity of “Frozen” seems relatively assured at this point, so bringing the franchise to Disneyland is far from a risk.

Star Tours has become one of Disneyland’s most versatile attractions, and its latest update nods to series such as ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘Ahsoka’ and ‘Andor.’

But if the company opts to create something unique for Southern California rather than importing Hong Kong’s World of Frozen or Shanghai’s Zootopia, one franchise that seems to be routinely brought up by executives is “Coco.” When mentioning blue-sky concepts last year year at an investor event in Florida, D’Amaro teased “Coco” as a key film that has yet to be properly explored in the Disney parks.

Potrock again mentioned “Coco” in an op-ed in the Orange County Register touting the benefits of DisneylandForward, writing that the initiative could pave the way for “the chance to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos in a ‘Coco’-themed experience.” Disney California Adventure, of course, is home to a Dia de Los Muertos celebration that does center a short “Coco” show, and the property seems especially ripe for Southern California and our heavily Latino communities. That makes it an opportunity to give Disneyland an unique land not found in other parks while also tapping into the region’s diverse fan base. Walt’s original park deserves no less as it looks ahead to closing out its first century.
