Traveling to new places is always a thrill, but it can come with some challenges. For example, which side of the road are you supposed to drive on ?

cruise with kid

Cruises simplify the bulk of your vacation planning and transportation, as everything you need is in one convenient package.

A family cruise line will keep your children entertained day and night. I’ve rounded up seven of my favorites, which I’ll share in the first part of this guide.

Then I’ll recommend the most kid-friendly cruise ships for booking your next vacation.

The 7 Best Family-Friendly Cruise Lines

1. disney cruise line.

Discover how enchanting life at sea can be on a Disney Cruise Line.

Entertainment of all kinds awaits you. If you want to splash and play on your family vacation, you can ride the AquaDunk or AquaDuck water coasters, romp in Donald’s Pool or Goofy’s Pool, or enjoy the sparkling pool at Mickey’s AquaLab.

Pools are also divided for guests of varying ages, such as the Quiet Cove Pool for guests 18 and older, splash pads for kids three and under, and Satellite Falls for adults.

Live performances and musicals give each night a magical feel, while karaoke, trivia, and Disney character meet and greets ensure every minute aboard is exciting.

There are even kids’ clubs to give parents a break to enjoy nightclubs, fitness facilities, or the adults-only pool.

Your cruise will stop at Castaway Cay if visiting a Caribbean or Bahamian island. This island is exclusively for cruise line guests. Your day at Castaway Cay will include food and refreshments, beach access, pools and water slides, trails, and yoga classes.

Oh, and there’s all-you-can-eat ice cream, which will delight children of all ages.

The family-centric staterooms offer television with in-room movies, a fridge, plenty of storage, and split bathrooms so the family can maintain its privacy.

Disney Cruise Lines can take you across the Transatlantic, South Pacific, Panama Canal, Pacific Coast, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Hawaii, Europe, the Caribbean, Canada, Bermuda, Alaska, and the Bahamas.

2. Norwegian Cruise Line

Take the family vacation of a lifetime on the Norwegian Cruise Line.

Its Freestyle Cruising allows you to plan your vacation just the way you like it. Enjoy long-running, Tony Award-nominated musicals or top-notch concerts.

The ThrillPlex offers activities that will make your kids smile from ear to ear. How does a rousing game of family laser tag sound? Or maybe you want to climb a ropes course or race on a track to see who’s the fastest? The ThrillPlex has all that and more.

Eat well no matter the cuisine you and the family crave, from simple burgers to Brazilian steakhouses, Japanese food, seafood, or global cuisine. Some establishments offer buffet-style dining, and others are open 24 hours so you can always fill your belly.

The sizable suites and staterooms are family-friendly and accommodate larger groups of up to eight. Your room includes concierge and butler service, large rooms for privacy, and a balcony you’ll love to look out from.

Norwegian Cruise Lines visit Asia, New England, Florida, Alaska, the Bahamas, Canada, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Europe, and Hawaii. You can also take special cruise tours or music-themed cruises.

3. Royal Caribbean International

Experience the world’s wonders on a Royal Caribbean International cruise line.

You won’t want for much, as the various ships under the Royal Caribbean umbrella promise fun and excitement from the moment you step onto the ship until you disembark.

You can take dance classes, check out a virtual concert, strategize to get out of an escape room, and eat to your heart’s (and stomach’s) content.

The youth programs feature an Imagination Studio for kids to explore and express their creative sides. Older kids can become junior scientists at the Adventure Science Lab, while the Teen Lounge keeps similarly-aged kids entertained.

Activities like story time, theater, art, and science will enchant the young’uns, who you will definitely want to bring, as kids sail free.

Cruise the world on a Royal Caribbean ship, including the Bahamas, Alaska, New England, the Caribbean, New Zealand, Asia, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, the Panama Canal, Hawaii, the Transpacific, Transatlantic, South Pacific, or Pacific Northwest.

4. Carnival Cruise Line

It’s time to get away on a Carnival Cruise Line.

This vacation experience can be anything you want, from relaxing and rejuvenating (with adult-only retreats and spas) to exciting with breathtakingly tall water slides, Family Feud Live, and the SkyRide overlooking the ocean.

The kids can hop around and burn off energy at the bungee Sky Zone, make a new friend at the Build-A-Bear Workshop at Sea, play mini golf, spend the day at the arcade, or compete in a friendly game of basketball.

Camp Ocean keeps kids between 2 and 11 years old busy, and Circle “C” is for older kids between 12 and 14.

Of course, with a ropes course, IMAX theaters, and a space program for kids 2 to 11, there’s always something for families to do together.

A stateroom or suite can accommodate your entire brood, whether there are only a few of you or a larger group. The rooms have an extra bathroom, a TV, and climate control.

Some rooms even connect so your kids can feel independent while you keep a watchful eye over them.

A Carnival Cruise Line vacation can take you across Greenland, the Panama Canal, Asia, the South Pacific, the Transatlantic, New Guinea, the South Pacific, New Zealand, the Panama Canal, Hawaii, New England, the Bahamas, Canada, Alaska, Europe, the Transpacific, Bermuda, and the Bahamas.

Onboard activities for all tastes are available. Princess and Discovery have an immersive, unique Discovery at SEA Enrichment Program that lets you see this planet and its inhabitants in engaging ways.

The Festivals of the World Program will introduce your family (especially the kiddos) to new cultures as they celebrate Mexican fiestas, Carnaval de Panama, Celtic Festival, and more.

Take a dip in a pool, chill out in a hot tub, play every sport imaginable (from shuffleboard to mini golf), and catch a tan at the Reef Family Splash Zone, a mini water park with games, pools, and water features.

So where would you and the family like to go?

You can take a short excursion that lasts between three and six days or visit such parts of the world as the South Pacific, Panama Canal, Europe, Tahiti, Asia, Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, New England, Antarctica, Japan, South America, Canada, New Zealand, the Pacific Coast, Australia, and California.

World cruises are also available.

That’s only scratching the surface! The 4D cinema experience makes you feel like you’re racing on a freeway or experiencing other immersive scenes without leaving your seat. The Robotron is a thrilling amusement ride, and the Flight Simulator lets you take to the skies while still safely on the ship.

The kids can also play at the arcade, practice driving in the F1 simulator, or play some sports. Live entertainment abounds, with options for just the adults or the entire family.

The 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships

You have some great ideas for where to book your next family cruise, but now the question is which ship specifically is right for your group?

I’m here to help you make this all-important choice by reviewing 12 of the best cruise ships for kids.

1. Disney Dream

Disney magic comes to life on the Disney Dream, an enchanting cruise experience.

The warm, opulent common areas add extravagance to your vacation, while kid-friendly activities and amenities will keep the young ones entertained.

Treat them to Vanellope’s Sweets, a candy shop with walls of candy as far as the eye can see. Disney entertainment comes to the big stages as only this brand can, with costumed characters singing, dancing, and entertaining guests all day or evening.

The staterooms have portholes that allow the kids to glance out at the ocean whenever they wish, and with family-centric amenities at every turn, you might not want to disembark!

2. Wonder of the Seas

The Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas embarks from Cape Canaveral and island hops the entire cruise, including a stop at Perfect Day at Coco Cay, the Royal Caribbean’s own private island only for cruise guests.

Kids will fall in love with the Wonder Playscape, which offers puzzles, games, climbing walls, and slides. Pool decks throughout will let you take a much-needed load off.

Perhaps you and the family are brave enough to try the 10-story Ultimate Abyss water slide!

Some staterooms overlook the majesty of the sea, and others have a virtual balcony. All rooms include Wi-Fi, spa features, and room service.

3. Disney Magic

You have so many ways to experience the wonder of a Disney Cruise Line vacation, including the Disney Magic.

This inviting ship is the home of D Lounge, the family-friendly hangout zone with dance parties, games, and hours upon hours of fun.

The kids can manage the Avengers during the Avenger’s Academy ride, visit the Mickey Mouse Club, receive a makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (knights for boys and princesses for girls), or ride dizzying, spiraling water slides.

The nautical-themed staterooms are cozy and spacious for families, and split bathrooms, portholes, and private verandas also set the mood.

4. Symphony of the Seas

Calling itself “The Sound of Wonder,” the Symphony of the Seas through the Royal Caribbean is new and improved for families.

Hit up Sugar Beach and buy some candy, ride three water slides in one on The Perfect Storm, or learn to hang ten on the FlowRider. You’ll spend the days in the most fun ways possible.

Wonderland has whimsical food the kids will go gaga over. There are cocktails for the parents that are just as inspired.

Snuggle up to the Ultimate Family Suite, which boasts a private game room, a hot tub, table tennis facilities, and karaoke.

5. Mardi Gras

Carnival’s Mardi Gras is one of its latest and greatest creations, so you should expect the ultimate in entertainment.

Take a ride on the Bolt sea coaster for some exciting thrills. You can also spend a sunny day at the WaterWorks water park with a dumping bucket and countless water slides, then close out the day by seeing a show. It’s all waiting for you.

The Family Harbor Staterooms in the Family Harbor Lounge is where you need to be. Kids eat free at most restaurants in the lounge, and you can take advantage of entertainment like board games and movies. Babysitting is also available.

6. MSC Meraviglia

Departing from Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, set sail for a world of adventure aboard the MSG Meraviglia. This ship sails to New England and Canada and delights the entire voyage.

Stroll through the 315-foot Galleria Meraviglia promenade, shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, or simply enjoying the beauty of it all.

Dive into the Horizon pool, which is open day and night (although there are dances and parties at night, so maybe visit sans kids).

Your kids will adore the F1 simulators, full-sized bowling alley, sportsplex, and Polar Aquapark with its sloping, looping enclosed slides.

Mini and Juniors Clubs give the kids a safe and fun place to play if you need to drop them off, as the rooms are bright, colorful, and full of toys.

7. Disney Wish

The Disney Cruise Line collection has recently expanded, adding Disney Wish to the ever-growing fleet. This ship has some claims to fame you’ll only find here, such as theatrical Frozen or Avengers -themed dining experiences.

Be one of the first to experience the Disney Unchartered Adventure, an immersive water experience with more than 700 feet of tubes and music, animations, special effects, and lighting. The experience ends by riding down a lazy river, so dress to get wet!

The Hero Zone is another standout the kids should love. They can compete with one another gameshow-style, play on the game floor or playground, and see who’s victorious on the sports court.

8. Carnival Panorama

Set sail to the Transpacific and Mexico on the Carnival Panorama through a Carnival Cruise Line. The 1,055-foot ship that weighs over 133,000 tons will put the whole family in a festive mood.

Laugh until you cry at The Punchliner Comedy Club, which also offers entertainment for adults.

The Carnival Panorama has plenty of Dr. Suess-themed entertainment the young ones will love, such as Dr. Suess Bookville, the Suess-a-palooza Parade, the Suess-a-palooza Story Time, and the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast.

Zumbini is a Zumba class for kids two to five that will have their little bodies moving and grooving. There’s also a Night Owls overnight stay for the children, which is like one big sleepover!

9. Allure of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International invites families to sail away on the Allure of the Seas, an award-winning ship for family entertainment.

Included with your stay are kids and teen programs and access to the H2O Zone Water Park. The park boasts waterfalls, water cannons, pools, and sculptures the kids can climb. Geysers send water high into the sky, splashing down and refreshing your children all afternoon.

Dry off and play table tennis, ride a zipline, partake in an interactive game show, or watch an outdoor movie under the stars in the pool. The projector screen is 220 feet so there isn’t a bad seat in the house!

10. Norwegian Joy

The Norwegian Joy starts in the Mexican Riviera and wraps up its journey at the Panama Canal but alternately travels from Miami to the Caribbean. The ship is nearly 1,100 feet long and weighs more than 160,000 tons, so she’s quite heavy.

Fostering family togetherness on a ship like the Norwegian Joy is simple. You can take the twists and turns behind the wheel of the Joy Speedway, play a heart-thumping game of laser tag, or tee off at mini golf.

There’s so much more here. The Galaxy Pavilion offers a thrilling race-themed dark ride. Get your kicks at the Aqua Park, a water park for tweens and teens. The Norwegian Joy even has a Kids’ Aqua Park for the little ones.

11. Celebrity Equinox

Make your next family vacation something truly special on the Celebrity Equinox through the Celebrity Cruise Line. Deck 15 has all the amenities a family needs.

For instance, you and the kids can learn how to blow glass at the Hot Glass Studio, which is not something you see on every cruise ship.

How about some croquet or bocce on the Lawn Club? The kids’ club will watch your children between three and 12, offering lunch, dinner, and overnight stays if needed, and the ship even offers babysitting services in your cabin.

12. Norwegian Encore

Traverse the world on the Norwegian Encore, traveling from Alaska to Seattle or from the Caribbean to Miami. Adventure calls on the Encore, including many of the fun activities for families featured on other Norwegian cruise ships.

Cruising has long been a popular way for people to travel, especially for those that are retired. There’s something about getting to enjoy an endless amount of food, drinks, and onboard activities while the ship takes you from one destination to another. It’s surely a tempting way to see the world.

As cruise lines including Carnival and Royal Caribbean continue to introduce show-stopping attractions that kids love, such as roller coasters and laser tag, families are getting more and more into cruising, too.

However, as with any vacation parents and families consider taking with kids, we have to ask: what are the best cruise lines for families?

The answer is, it depends.

Just like when you choose a hotel, families look for certain amenities for a cruise vacation.

Entertaining kids on any vacation is usually top of mind when planning a trip. A kid-friendly cruise line will have entertainment for its youngest sailors . Kids’ and teens’ clubs, pools, and water slides are just a few of the kid-specific amenities that you’ll find on a lot of the cruises on this list.

Higher-end cruise lines like expedition cruises offer robust educational programs for kids as well as adults. A family-friendly cruise might also have a place for the adults to relax such as a spa or adults-only area.

The cabin size matters, too, just as it would at a traditional hotel or resort .

Larger families may prefer a suite over an inside cabin. But either way, the square footage matters — even more so if you’ll spend quite a bit of your time onboard the ship.

And lastly, food might be a factor in deciding what cruise line would be best for your family. Luxury cruise lines such as Regent Seven Seas and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will no doubt have a superb menu, but they may not be expert kid-pleasers like Disney Cruise Line when it comes to food.

Ocean Cay is MSC Cruises' private island in the Bahamas.

There are 3 types of cruises to choose from — ocean, river, and expedition cruises.

Ocean cruises are what most people have in mind when they think of taking a cruise. Most cruise lines have at least a few ocean cruise ships in their portfolio and they most popularly frequent the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Alaska , and Hawaii.

River cruises have traditionally been more popular with older cruisers but are now appealing to the younger crowds as well. River cruises can be found throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. Most cruise lines don’t have kid or family programs and some outright don’t allow kids under 18, though Adventures by Disney and AmaWaterways have partnered to offer river cruising for families (more on that later).

And finally, expedition cruises take adventure-seekers to curious and far-flung destinations like the Arctic, Antarctica , the Galapagos , and the Amazon. Expedition boats are much smaller than ocean liners, and the offerings on board are usually more tailored to history and education on expedition cruises .

With all of that in mind, here are the best cruise lines for families and kids.

The 5 Best Cruise Lines for Families and Kids

Mickey and Minnie Onboard Disney Cruise

Destinations :

  • Australia and New Zealand
  • Pacific Coast
  • Panama Canal
  • South Pacific

Number of Ships : 5

Disney Cruise Line is at the top of this list because it does a really fantastic job of catering to every member of the family. It has managed to bring the magic of Disney theme parks to the middle of the ocean — even the fireworks shows.

There are only 5 ships in Disney Cruise Lines’ portfolio, but Disney has plenty of cruise itineraries to choose from. It sails to popular destinations as well as unique places that families might not have considered, such as the Norwegian Fjords .

Sailings feature character experiences just like at the Disney theme parks. You’ll also find live shows, a spa, nightclubs, and lounges. Each ship also has various kids’ clubs for passengers as young as 3 years old (a fee-based nursery is available for kids under 3), as well as pools with waterslides and aqua play areas. Older kids can enjoy a little independence in spaces designed just for them where they can play video games, watch TV, and meet other kids their age.

Dining options aboard Disney cruises include main and casual dining as well as adult-exclusive dining options. There are almost a dozen restaurants, cafes, and snack shops on each ship. Some nod to beloved Disney movie characters, like Lumiere’s on Disney Magic and Tiana’s Place on Disney Wonder.

Within each ship, there are 4 categories of staterooms: Inside, Oceanview, Oceanview with Verandah, and Concierge. Within most categories are family rooms with bunk beds as well as accessible rooms.

Shore excursions include private tours, culinary adventures, and accessible excursions in more than 25 countries. Guests especially love Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , when cruising select Caribbean itineraries.

Destinations:

  • Arabian Gulf and North Africa
  • North America
  • South America

Number of Ships:  27

Royal Caribbean has a whopping 27 cruise ships in its portfolio with another, Utopia of The Seas, scheduled for delivery in 2024.

The cruise line features the world’s largest ships and the tallest water slide at sea . From arcades to roller coasters, there is never any shortage of thrill-seeking activities to find on board any Royal Caribbean cruise.

If you and your family want to make the most of a Royal Caribbean cruise, you’ll want to check out Royal Caribbean’s Oasis Class and Amplified ships . These classes of ships feature even more exciting attractions including glow-in-the-dark laser tag and several on-deck pools.

Alternatively, there are places on every Royal Caribbean ship where you can get away from the excitement and relax. In the Solarium, where kids under 16 aren’t allowed, soothing music helps you to decompress while lounging on a daybed or hanging out in a hot tub.

Royal Caribbean also has a private island exclusively for its guests . Coco Cay is located in the Bahamas and features a 13-slide water park as well as the region’s largest wave pools and freshwater pools.

Kids always sail free on Royal Caribbean cruises.

Number of Ships : 24

Carnival Cruise Line has a reputation for being a party cruise line. However, the prices can rarely be beaten, which a lot of family travelers can appreciate.

Similar to Royal Caribbean, Carnival likes to wow its guests with nonstop fun. The onboard attraction Bolt Ultimate Sea Coaster — the first rollercoaster at sea — can be found on 2 of its ships: Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration .

There are 4 standard cabin types on Carnival cruise ships: Interior, Ocean View, Balcony, and Suite. There are also specialty rooms on select ships.

Family Harbor staterooms and suites are located near Family Harbor Lounges and come with a free evening of Night Owls babysitting, among other perks. Cloud 9 Spa staterooms and suites offer Elemis toiletries, spa-branded bathrobes and slippers, and priority spa reservations. And lastly, Havana staterooms and suites are located close to the Havana Bar and Pool. Some suites come with hammock chairs in the outdoor area.

New Orleans native and Food Network star Emeril Lagasse is the newest Chief Culinary Officer for all 24 ships with 3 original restaurants. There are plenty of dining options to choose from across the fleet with cuisines including Italian, Creole, burgers, and teppanyaki.

Onboard activities include Family Feud Live, waterslides, karaoke, and The Punchliner Comedy Club. Most but not all activities are included in the cruise fare. The IMAX theater and a few other attractions incur an additional cost.

Family-friendly excursions and tours include a wildlife safari and beach bonfire on an Alaskan cruise, panoramas and painting in Grand Turk, and a stingray adventure in the Bahamas.

Carnival has a private island that it shares exclusively with Holland America called Half Moon Cay.

Norwegian Cruise Line is best known for being the most innovative cruise line . Notably, it has done away with traditional cruise concepts such as inflexible dining schedules and even dress codes.

Among the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet there are 8 different classes of ships of varying capacities and offerings. The class of ship that tends to be most popular with families is the Breakaway Class . The 2 ships in this class, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway , each have a capacity of about 4,000 passengers. Between the 2 of them, they sail all over the world.

What makes this class of ships on Norweigan Cruise Lines so appealing to families is that it feels like a floating resort. These are the second-largest ships in Norwegian’s fleet. Activities on either ship include multiple pools, a waterpark, and even a full-size ropes course.

The stateroom categories aboard both the Norwegian Getaway and the Norwegian Breakaway include Studio, Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Spa, Club Balcony Suite, and The Haven.  Within those categories are another 30 stateroom types to choose from, including a 2-bedroom family villa . The Haven is an exclusive set of staterooms at the top level of the ship that features a 24-hour butler, concierge service, and sundeck.

In addition to room service, guests aboard Breakaway Class Norwegian Cruise Line ships can enjoy almost 2 dozen restaurants and bars. Not every restaurant is included in your cruise fare. Specialty dining options include seafood restaurant Ocean Blue, Brazilian steakhouse Moderno Churrascaria, and French restaurant Le Bistro.

In addition to excursions that you can book for an additional fee, Norwegian Cruise Line has a private island, Great Stirrup Cay, in the Bahamas.

Lego Experience on MSC Cruises

  • Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Qatar
  • Northern Europe
  • South Africa

Number of   ships : 19

MSC Cruises is a European-based cruise company with a growing footprint in North America and the Caribbean. It’s known for offering an affordable cruise option without a lot of the fluff of other cruise lines.

Even without a rollercoaster that jets out over the sea, MSC Cruises is still a popular option for family travelers.

For family cruisers in particular, MSC offers family excursions with special pricing for kids, and tours designed to be interactive as well as educational . There are also kids’ clubs aboard their ships in addition to the LEGO Experience on Board, which is a day dedicated to LEGO activities for the whole family.

Select ships feature a fully-immersive virtual reality experience, a movie theater, and an arcade room.

Passengers can expect the typical array of dining options aboard MSC Cruises as well as a special kids’ corner available at the buffet. There’s also a dessert corner and a wellness corner.

There are simply 4 stateroom categories aboard most MSC ships: Interior, Oceanview, Balcony, and MSC Yacht Club. Within the highest category of staterooms, MSC Yacht Club, guests can expect 24-hour butler service, complimentary access to the Thermal Suite in the MSC Aurea Spa, relaxation amenities, and more.

The 6 Best Luxury Cruise Lines for Families

For some families, a megaresort — or in the case here, a mega ship — just isn’t the way you’d like to spend your time on vacation.

There are more upscale and low-key cruise lines that cater to more discerning travel habits while also considering the needs of your youngest family members. In the luxury cruise category, you’ll find expedition and river cruises.

Luxury cruise lines come with a higher financial investment than the cruise lines listed above, but in return, you’ll find more inclusions, often better food, and far fewer onboard guests .

They also admittedly don’t offer as many action-packed attractions on board and some do not cater to especially young children. However, the cruise lines on this list each have unique kids and teens programs that you should be aware of.

Here are the best luxury cruise lines for families.

Camp at Sea on Celebrity Cruises

Number of Ships : 16

Celebrity Cruises features large ships but aims to provide a more high-end experience than you’ll find on cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises. It also does a great job of catering to multi-generational cruisers .

Camp at Sea is Celebrity Cruises’ kids’ club for kids 3 to 17 years old. Camp is open every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is broken into 4 age groups. Activities range from arts and crafts for the youngest age group to video game tournaments, scavenger hunts, and movie nights for older kids.

Family-friendly excursions include cultural tours, water sports, volcano and glacier hikes, and swimming with dolphins.

There are 4 classes of cruise ships offered by Celebrity Cruises: Edge Class (its newest and most innovative), Solstice Class, Millenium Class, and Galapagos Vessels.

Hot Tip: Cruisers say that Celebrity Equinox is the most family-friendly Celebrity ship thanks to 2 kids’ programs only available on this ship as well as over 100 adjoining cabins.

An array of staterooms exist to choose from on Celebrity Cruise ships, including family verandahs that sleep 5. Celebrity Cruise ships also feature staterooms that cater to solo travelers as well, so when traveling with a group, no one has to feel obligated to share a room.

There are a dozen dining options across each ship such as the French restaurant Normandie or the Mediterranean eatery Cyprus Restaurant. Specialty dining options include Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, Raw on 5 Restaurant serving fresh seafood, and Fine Cut Steakhouse.

The Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection debuts

  • Northern Europe and the Baltic

Number of Ships : 1

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection struggled to set sail when its first yacht was delivered during the height of the pandemic. But Ritz-Carlton hotel loyalists, eager to experience the 5-star hospitality at sea, waited patiently for the first yacht to embark. That finally happened late last year.

Its solo yacht Evrima , which is the Greek word for “discovery,” will be joined by Ilma in 2024.

Guests aboard a Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection vessel can expect the same service they would on land, including the Ritz Kids program. At Ritz Kids, children ages 4 to 12 years old have the opportunity to participate in unique activities based on where they’re traveling . Programming mainly focuses on sustainability, marine life, sailing, and arts and culture.

There’s not an expectation for the yachts to frequently be teeming with children, but the cruise line expects to host more young passengers during summer and holiday school breaks.

The all-suite Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection features ocean views from every room, as well as 6 restaurants and in-suite dining. Guests can enjoy Southeast Asian cuisine from contemporary restaurant Talaat Nam or check out Mediterranean restaurant Mistral.

Ritz-Carlton is a Marriott Bonvoy brand and as such, you can earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points when sailing the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection . You’ll earn 5 points per $1 spent on the price of your cruise and hotel package and 1 Elite Night Credit per night of your sailing. Redemptions start at 180,000 Bonvoy points to save $1,000, followed by 90,000-point increments to save $500. Redeeming points this way is a tough sell, but the earning isn’t too bad, especially paired with a Marriott Bonvoy credit card ..

Lindblad family Alaska

  • Central America
  • French Polynesia
  • Vietnam and Cambodia

Lindblad Expeditions aims to be the premier expedition cruise line. Its National Geographic Global Explorers program offers exclusive and family-friendly programming for kids and teens.

Expedition cruises are all about exploring remote destinations like Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, and the Amazon. Expedition passengers can expect expert-led educational tours and excursions, and smaller ships that cater to less than 100 people .

With the National Geographic Global Explorers program, kids and teens get hands-on experience collecting and analyzing samples, learn how to take field notes, and even learn how to take slow-motion and timelapse videos to document their findings. The National Geographic Global Explorers program can be found on cruises to Antarctica, Alaska, Baja California, and Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions ships carry as few as 28 guests and at most 148. As such, cabins and suites vary across the company’s fleet of ships. It’s a little difficult to find out on your own which suites would accommodate more than 2 people or if you can get connecting cabins, though they do exist, as well as standard double-occupancy suites. As a tip, the best way to book a Lindblad Expedition cruise with your family may be to work with a travel advisor to ensure that you’re making the right investment.

Expedition cruisers seem to be less concerned about the dining options, however, Lindblad does boast that the dining is delicious and sustainably sourced.

Paul Gaugin cruise Tahiti environment kids program

  • Cook Islands
  • Society Islands

Paul Gauguin Cruises specializes in luxury cruises in Tahiti, Fiji, and the South Pacific. With just 1 cruise ship in its fleet, Paul Gauguin takes cruisers to ports that larger cruise ships can’t access.

The Gauguin has a limited capacity of 330 guests . Featuring a spa, 3 dining venues, and an onboard watersports marina, the ship is mostly informal luxury.

The Moana Explorer Program , in partnership with marine education and conservation foundation “Te mana o te moana,” teaches kids ages 7 to 15 about the wonders of the South Pacific.

Only available on summer and holiday sailings, the free program includes activities such as naturalist-led island and beach excursions, crafts, and science. Other fun ways that kids can spend their time aboard The Gauguin are with treasure hunts, stargazing, and designing their own Polynesian tattoos.

All 3 of the dining venues aboard The Gauguin offer a well-thought-out menu with both formal and informal dining options. La Veranda offers alfresco dining inspired by the destinations the ship sails to, Le Grill serves a buffet breakfast, grilled lunch favorites, salads, and tropical fruits, and L’Etoile is the main dining option and serves a fine dining menu with complimentary wine pairings.

Cap'n Knof welcomes families aboard every Hapa Lloyd Cruise.

  • Middle East
  • Pacific and South Seas

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has been called “the most luxurious cruise line you’ve never heard of” by Cruise Critic and is frequently featured on lists of the best cruises for families.

The cruise line claims to pay the same amount of attention to the children and teenagers onboard as the adults. Cap’n Knof, Hapag-Lloyd’s mascot, welcomes each family on board every sailing and participates in games with guests.

Childcare offers vary across the 5 ships. However, sailors can expect a kids’ club for children as young as 4 years old on Europa and Europa 2, the cruise line’s 2 ocean liners. Activities include language classes, unique children’s excursions designed around the interests of the kids onboard, and even spa treatments for kids as young as 8 years old.

Unfortunately, there is no kids program on the cruise lines’ 3 expedition ships: Hanseatic Nature, Hanseatic Inspiration, and Hanseatic Spirit .

Children 11 years old and younger sail free on Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and receive reduced pricing on arrival and departure packages.

Adventures by Disney Seine Paris

  • Danube River
  • Rhine River
  • Seine River

Number of Ships : 4

In partnership with AmaWaterways, Adventures by Disney River Cruises offer families an opportunity to experience river cruising that caters to them.

AmaWaterways is a leader in luxury river cruising, with destinations that include the Nile River in Egypt and the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, in addition to its European river cruises.

Adventures by Disney River Cruises feature local experts that tell the story of each location. What makes river cruises most attractive to some travelers is that you can travel slowly through a destination and spend more time learning about where you are . Disney’s river cruises are no exception with cultural immersion part of every day of the itinerary.

Hints of Disney can be found throughout the ship just as on Disney Cruise Line ocean ships. Mouse-shaped treats and Disney-themed karaoke are just a few of the features you’ll find on board.

Stateroom configurations range from inside to suites and can accommodate between 2 and 4 guests. Dining on board varies depending on the ship that’s sailing. This information can be found on the highlights page of each sailing’s itinerary.

Hot Tip: Adults who love Disney but prefer to travel without kids can sail on Adventures by Disney adult-exclusive sailings.

If a family cruise vacation is on your list, you’ve got plenty of options to choose from. Whether you prefer nonstop energy and lots of things to do or a more laid-back and low-key vibe with luxury amenities and excursions, there is a cruise line for you and your family.

Thrill seekers and budget-conscious travelers will find a great balance on cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and MSC Cruises. And luxury travelers interested in expeditions and educational cruising with their families will be delighted to cruise with Lindblad Expeditions, Celebrity Cruises, and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. The best cruise lines in the world are ranked each year and categorized by type of ship, not exactly the highest quality. This would depend on the type of cruise you’d like to take. In 2022, Conde Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice Awards ranked Royal Caribbean as the best mega ship and Norwegian Cruise Line as the best large ship. Viking Ocean Cruises and Viking River Cruises won for best medium ship and best ocean ship, respectively. And, lastly, Ponant won for best Expedition cruise.

Are cruises family-friendly?

Whether a cruise is family-friendly depends on the type of cruise you’re taking and with which cruise line. The cruise lines listed above all have special programming for kids and guests of all ages.

What age group cruises most?

According to Cruise Critic, the general age range of cruisers is 30 to 80 years old. You’re not likely to find a cruise line or ship that exclusively caters to 1 age group.

Is it worth taking kids on a cruise?

This depends on what you like to do as a family. The right cruise will offer activities for adults as well as kids to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable trip.

Kids cruise - Alaska

  • Find a Cruise

One of the most wonderful aspects of traveling with children is the way you will see the world through their eyes. Who could forget spotting their first sea turtle on a snorkeling trip, or setting foot on a glacier in Iceland?

A cruise is one of the best settings for a family adventure. A cruise ship can take you to extraordinary places, from the snow-capped mountains and dense forests of Alaska to the sun-soaked beaches of the Greek Islands.

And beyond being a shared experience for the whole family, travel is the ultimate education. It combines history, geography, politics, geology, and marine biology, sometimes in the space of a single trip.

Sure, you’ll want to build in downtime for unwinding on a beach, or sampling the local ice cream, but your kids will always thank you for taking them deeper into a destination and coming away with the sense of another culture, or at the very least, thrilling adventures that will make them the envy of Instagram.

Here are 10 destinations that play a starring role in the world’s best cruises for kids.

Mykonos, Greece

Brown sands of Kalafatis Beach in Mykonos

Kalafatis Beach in Mykonos, Greece

While Mykonos is probably best known as a cosmopolitan playground for adults, it’s actually a wonderful family destination, not least thanks to its necklace of sandy beaches. Most are accessible from pretty Mykonos Town, the chic little capital, as a day trip by bus or boat.

Choose carefully if you’ve got children in tow as some of the beaches in Mykonos are more liberal than others. Kalafatis, on the east coast, is a great bet for families, a sweep of pale gold fringed by scrubby hills.

You’ll experience some of the best things to do in Mykonos here, from windsurfing to snorkeling over the rocks on the lookout for sea stars and octopuses. There are waterfront tavernas, too; no visit to Greece is complete without a lunch of souvlaki, a chicken or pork skewer, and a fresh tomato salad.

Back in town, head for Little Venice, the old fishing quarter, now a string of hipster cocktail bars along the water’s edge. Kids will enjoy looking out for the island’s three resident pelicans. The birds are long-standing Mykonos mascots and will stroll casually into the fish tavernas for snacks. They are particularly photogenic, although they’re best not approached for selfies.

Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman, one of the best kids cruise destinations

Watch: Discover Grand Cayman With Celebrity Cruises

Laid-back Grand Cayman combines a number of activities that make it the perfect destination on the best cruises for kids—and for adults, too. Youngsters love Stingray City, a shallow sandbar on which you can stand and wait for southern rays to glide gracefully past you. There’s even a chance to feed them, and the experience is perfectly safe.

Grand Cayman is also a wonderful introduction to the underwater world. Novice snorkelers will adore the Coral Gardens, rainbow-hued coral beds teeming with fish, just feet below the surface. Head for Spotts Beach, east of George Town, and look out for sea turtles drifting through the shallows, munching on the seagrass beds.

And for simply lazing on the sand, or taking out a sea kayak or a paddleboard, the vast sweep of Seven Mile Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the Caribbean .

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Family watching Galapagos tortoise

The Galapagos really is the ultimate family adventure and one of the best cruises for kids you’ll ever do. This is a chance to combine history with geography, conservation, and some thrilling wildlife encounters in one incredible vacation.

You’ll hike on volcanic trails, looking out for prehistoric-looking land iguanas, and watch blue-footed boobies performing their curious courtship dance.

People snorkeling in the Galapagos

Snorkeling in Galapagos

Snorkel the deep, clear water with Galapagos penguins zipping around below you like bullets and sea turtles gliding through the blue. You may even spot black-tipped reef sharks cruising the seafloor. Kids will love watching pelicans dive for fish, and spotting the giant, slow-moving Galapagos tortoise in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island.

Every day brings a new adventure when you’re visiting the Galapagos with kids , whether you’re learning about Charles Darwin or studying ancient lava flows.

What children really love about the Galapagos is the fact that the animals have no fear of humans, so you can get as close as national park rules permit. If there were ever a place to encourage a young photographer, this is it.

Santorini, Greece

Cobblestone streets of Oia, Santorini

Watch: Discover Santorini With Celebrity Cruises

Kids will be awe-struck by Santorini for the sheer fact that it’s an actual volcano, where sugar-cube houses spill over vertiginous black cliffs that plunge into the deep sapphire sea.

Cruising is the best way to see the Greek Islands , and there’s a lot to do here. Take a trip to Oia, possibly the most scenic of the island’s villages, with blue-domed churches and winding alleys offering tantalizing glimpses of the Aegean far below. Oia is an Instagrammer’s dream, which teens will love.

Famous ruins of Akrotiri

Akrotiri Ruins in Santorini, Greece

For a more educational day out, head for Akrotiri, a thrillingly presented excavation of an ancient town that was abandoned by the Minoans in 1650 BC, just before Santorini was devastated by a volcanic eruption. The glimpses into the Minoans’ lifestyle are fascinating; ancient wall paintings show you what the men and women wore, the sports they played, and the food they ate.

Active families might want to consider a trip to Nea Kameni, the island at the center of the caldera. You can hike up here to the crater, which oozes sulphuric gases, and afterward, take a dip in water that’s curiously warm, bubbles streaming up from the sea bed which give it an effervescent feel.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Majestic view of Gullfoss Waterfall

Watch: Iceland Cruises: Discover Breathtaking Natural Wonders

Iceland’s compact capital is the gateway to unimaginable adventure and is ranked highly as a highlight of the ultimate kids’ cruise. Cascading waterfalls, volcanic fissures, a jagged, black lunar landscape, creaking glaciers, and some of the best hot springs in the world are all within a day trip of the city.

Head for Gullfoss, one of the most dramatic waterfalls in Iceland , a 100-foot wall of water, rainbows shimmering in the spray. Or Strokkur, a magnificent geyser that shoots a plume of boiling water 120 feet into the air every few minutes.

Majestic man-made tunnel inside Langjokull Glacier

Langjökull Glacier in Reykjavik, Iceland

For a real treat, and a rare chance for budding geographers to discover glaciation in action, one of the best things to do in Reykjavik is to take a trip to Langjökull Glacier for an adventure that kids will never forget. Rugged 4WD vehicles bump across the ice, delivering you to an entrance that leads you into an ice tunnel, running deep inside the glacier. The realization that you’re actually inside a moving river of ice is extraordinary. You’ll encounter tumbling waterfalls in the darkness and rushing underground rivers.

Kids will also love the famous Blue Lagoon, a natural geothermal pool near Reykjavik , where you can wallow in the hot water and plaster yourself with health-giving mud, the perfect opportunity for selfies.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Colorful buildings lined up in Copenhagen

Nyhavn in Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is a handsome, easily walkable city with some fine attractions. Stroll along Strøget, known for its extremely stylish shops, or join the locals in the cafes and restaurants lining colorful Nyhavn, a hip place to sit by the boats in the harbor, eat, and watch life go by.

Kids of all ages will love Tivoli Gardens, a 19th-century amusement park at the center of the city with such charm that you’re never too old to enjoy it. The roller coasters, ghost trains, ferris wheel, and other rides lie in an enchanting setting of ornamental gardens around a lake, with picnic areas, food stalls and restaurants. You’ll find outdoor theatre, live music, and on summer evenings, fireworks.

Tallinn, Estonia

Colorful buildings of Town Hall Square

The medieval center of Tallinn is straight out of a fairytale, with its crooked houses, cobbled alleys, and sturdy ramparts. There’s plenty to see here. You could, for example, climb Fat Margaret, one of the best preserved of the city’s 45 stone defensive towers. Fat Margaret was once a prison and gunpowder stores, and today houses a branch of the Estonian Maritime Museum, showcasing an ancient wreck and Stone Age fishing gear.

There’s more maritime interest at Lennusadam Seaplane Harbour, another branch of the museum, housed in a Russian-built aircraft hangar. Kids will be intrigued by the Lembit, a British-built submarine dating to the 1930s.

Older children who have studied the Cold War will love the ironic Soviet-era tours, which take place in a rickety bus and trundle past some of the city’s grimmest sights from Soviet times, including hideous apartment blocks and a jail. Tour leaders play along with the mood of the era, offering service with a snarl, much to the amusement of passengers.

Exterior of Hotel Viru

Hotel Viru in Tallinn, Estonia

One of the best things to do in Tallinn is to visit the KGB Museum in Hotel Viru. This former radio center is hidden in a secret room on the mysterious 23rd floor, from where the guest rooms and restaurant were bugged by Russian spies.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Scarlet macaws spotted in Carara National Park

Carara National Park in Puntarenas, Costa Rica

The steamy cloud forests and lush national parks of Costa Rica are the perfect spot for an active family adventure. In Carara National Park, named after the dazzling scarlet macaws that soar between the treetops, you can hike the forest trails with an eagle-eyed guide, looking out for more than 400 species of bird and keeping an eye out for giant crocodiles basking on muddy riverbanks.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is another wonderful family place to experience Costa Rica’s nature , with walking trails criss-crossing a vast, protected forest, an ethereal mist hanging over the treetops, the atmosphere creating astonishing biodiversity. Look out for emerald-green tree frogs, cheeky capuchin monkeys, and maybe even the elusive jaguar, one of six species of wild cat that inhabit the park.

Activities here, hiking aside, include thrill-packed ziplining, bouncing over hanging bridges, horseback riding, and even coffee tasting at one of the plantations. The park is a perfect contrast to Costa Rica’s golden beaches; no visit here would be complete without doing both.

Family whale watching in Alaska

Watch: Alaska Cruise with Celebrity Cruises

Alaska is all about pristine nature and wildlife encounters and is the perfect setting to encourage kids to turn away from their phones and to look at their surroundings instead. Spot bears foraging on beaches, or bald eagles perched in the trees.

Sightings of humpback whales, orcas and playful dolphins are common, and everybody loves the teddy bear-like faces of sea otters, bobbing on their backs. From Seward , the sled dog kennels at Seavey Homestead are a wonderful family activity; some of the dogs bred here are Iditarod champions.

Kids cruise - Alaska

Take the family on an unforgettable Alaskan kayaking excursion , or a forest hike, with guides who will point out all the wildlife. Brave the high-speed ZipRider at Icy Strait Point. Embark on a whale-watching trip, and board the White Pass and Yukon Route railroad in Skagway. The dazzling scenery aside, of tumbling waterfalls and rushing rivers, kids will love learning about the heady days of the Gold Rush and the risks prospectors were prepared to take to make their fortune.

St. Maarten

Aerial view of St. Maarten, one of the best kids cruise destinations

Watch: Experience St. Maarten on a Luxury Cruise

St. Maarten packs plenty into a small space, including two cultural influences, Dutch and French, as well as superb beaches and a surprisingly lush interior.

On the French side, visit Loterie Farm, a former plantation that’s been turned into a nature reserve. You’ll find rainforest trails and a  treetop canopy tour of high ropes and zip lines, from which you might see basking iguanas and green monkeys scampering through the treetops. Teens will most likely love the “extreme” version of the Fly Zone, FZX, while parents can bask by a spring-fed pool and leave them to let off steam.

Plane crossing Maho Beach

Maho Beach, St. Maarten

An unusual attraction on St. Maarten is Maho Beach, a broad, white sand beach that happens to be at the end of the airport runway. Maho has achieved cult status among airplane spotters, and you’ll find a great atmosphere here as airplanes roar overhead, almost impossibly low, to cheers and waves from observers in the water and on the sand.

Flight arrivals for the day are chalked onto a surfboard so you know when the excitement is going to start building. Maho isn’t the romantic ideal of peace and quiet, but teens love it, and it’s one of the most fun beaches on St. Maarten .

Cruising With Kids: 10 Mom-Tested Tips for Smooth Sailing

IMG-tips-cruise-with-kids

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

When you're planning for your next family vacation, consider taking your kids on a cruise. Cruising has become a favorite type of vacation for our family for a few reasons. With activities for everyone, food choices for any palette craving and a variety of destinations to explore, cruises offer families variety that's hard to find elsewhere. As a mom, I appreciate not having to plan meals or clean up messes for a week; it truly is a vacation.

How to Plan Your Cruise

If you're ready to consider a cruise, check out these tips to help you make the experience a positive one for you and your kids.

cruise with kid

Pick the Right Cruise Line and Ship

When you're ready to book that family cruise vacation, picking the right ship will probably make the biggest difference in keeping your kids happy. While I'm a big advocate that family vacations don't need to be all about the kids, when you're cruising you need to choose a ship built with kids in mind.

There are certainly cruise lines that are tailored toward kids. I like to say that Disney Cruise Line offers cruises made for kids that also welcome adults. Whereas most other cruise lines are made for adults and create opportunities for kids to have fun, too.

We've cruised with Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and even Celebrity Cruises . All have been great for families. Norwegian Cruise Line has a Freestyle Dining program where you chose your restaurant and dining time each night instead of being locked into a specific dining time and table. Royal Caribbean partners with DreamWorks for character meet-and-greets and offers a wealth of activities and clubs targeted toward kids. Carnival often has well-priced cruises, great for families working with a limited budget. And, my daughter surprisingly had a fabulous time on our recently Celebrity cruise, a line that typically targets adults. She found the kids club directors were highly engaged with her and they also planned some inventive activities for the small number of kids, making it more personal and less chaotic as some kids club activities on the ships tailored for little ones.

Picking the right cruise line and ship should be your first step in making sure your vacation is enjoyable for you and your kids. Some ships have ropes courses, epic waterslides and even go-kart race tracks. Pick the ship with the best activities that will appeal to your kid(s).

I recommend enlisting your kids to help you pick, if that's possible. Show them pictures of the different kid clubs on the ships or let them see the pool areas and pick their favorites. Just make sure you have them choose a few favorites so they don't get disappointed if you pick one that wasn't their first choice. Read our guide for The Best Credit Cards for Booking Cruises and 6 Ways to Use Points and Miles to Book a Cruise .

Pick the cool ship.(Photo by Kimberly Tate)

Larger or older families may also want to decide if you need two staterooms or one -- two can be surprisingly cost competitive with some of the larger staterooms .

Consider the Cool Kids Club

As I mentioned, the success of a cruise can hinge on the kids club. These days, most cruise lines have a children's program so it's smart to evaluate each of them when you're planning which cruise to book. Kids clubs have a variety of activities, beyond being play spaces. The clubs themselves are often outfitted with fun play spaces appropriate for kids of a certain age. There might be building toys, video games, board games and even a craft corner. Teen clubs often look like big dens with lots of lounge seating with video games and TVs set up around the room.

cruise with kid

Beyond the club spaces, kids club directors lead daily activities. These may be things like crafting activities, cooking lessons and even scavenger hunts. My youngest daughter, Mia, had a blast on recent Celebrity cruise when they went on a GoPro scavenger hunt around the ship as part of the tween/teen programming. When the girls were younger, Norwegian Cruise Line had a circus performance that the girls practiced for during the cruise and the acts were performed for parents on the final day in the theater. These additional activities are often printed on your daily cruise schedule or, in the case of Celebrity Cruises, personal invitations for the activity were delivered to the kids in our stateroom.

Knowing your kids' ages, look up how the cruise line breaks down the age groupings for activities. Sometimes they'll have a club for 3- to 12-year-olds, but the 3- to 8-year-olds will be grouped together and the 9- to 12-year-olds will be in another group. If you have kids who always want to be together, or who don't want to be together, it's good to know if they're going to be split up for activities. Conversely, if your tween doesn't want to hang with the toddlers, then make sure and choose a ship that has something just for them.

cruise with kid

If you're traveling with babies or toddlers, look for cruise lines that have a nursery and/or baby-sitting options. Disney has a nursery care option for children between 6 and 36 months old, for an additional fee. Other cruise lines might not have a specific club, but offer baby-sitting services for families at an additional fee.

Research the Ship's Dining Schedule

Dining on cruise ships can be one of the main perks for adult travelers. But often, kids won't have the same focus on cuisine that you do. Additionally, consider your dining times carefully when you're traveling with kids.

If your kids love sitting with you at dinner and experiencing a three-course meal, then choose a time that works for the whole family. If instead your kids would be quite happy with grabbing a piece of pizza at the buffet and heading back to the kids club, maybe pick a later dining time that will give you the chance to relax and dine as a couple.

Finally, keep in mind that if your kids want to watch any of the theater shows, you don't want an early dining time if it means they'll fall asleep during the later showtime. Prime dining times can book up, so book your cruise as early as possible to get the dining time you want.

Look for special family-friendly services like Royal Caribbean's My Family Time Dining, where families with the early dining seating can elect for their kids' dinner to be served within 40 minutes. Then a kids club counselor picks up the child(ren) at the restaurant so they can head to the club for the evening, allowing parents the chance to relax and linger over dinner.

Know Your Entertainment Options

Next, research the shows and activities on board in advance. Some cruise line shows are tailored for adults and might not be appropriate for kids. Often you can book your showtime reservations in advance, so keep in mind the time that will work best with their schedule. You'll also probably arrive a little early to get your seats for the show, so bring along an activity bag or device to keep the kids entertained while you wait.

Some cruise lines have character partnerships and activities that might allow your kids to meet some of their favorite characters. Disney, of course, has many of the traditional Disney characters, as well as offers special Marvel and Star Wars Days at Sea sailings. Royal Caribbean has a DreamWorks partnership that offers kids the chance to meet characters from popular films like "Shrek" and "Kung Fu Panda." Carnival has special activities centered on Dr. Seuss like a Green Eggs and Ham breakfast with the Cat in the Hat.

Many of the new cruise ships have some amazing activities on board that your kids will want to do. Find out if you need to book those in advance. On my recent Norwegian Bliss cruise, we had to book the go-kart race track and laser tag right when we boarded to get time slots since they book up fast. Just like with shore excursions (which we'll talk about next), you'll want to know if there are any limitations for the activities so that you know in advance if your kids can participate.

Research the theater shows in advance to see if they're appropriate for kids.(Photo by Kimberly Tate)

Plan a Shore Excursion

If you can swing it, I recommend letting your kids pick a shore excursion for your trip. Of course, if you have a larger family this might be difficult — not to mention pricy. But a shore tour can make a big impact on kids. However, as moms and dads, we all know that kids are different. What appeals to one of our kids might not appeal to the other one. The goal is finding something the whole family will enjoy doing together. Also keep in mind if there are any age, height or weight restrictions for excursions. You don't want to accidentally book an excursion that one member of your family can't participate in.

There are many options for shore excursions and your first step will be to decide if you're going to book through the ship or manage the excursion on your own — either once you disembark or in advance via a third party. Keep in mind that booking with the ship means you're promised a certain level of safety and organization, as well as the guarantee that you'll make it back to the ship on time. For families with young kids, I highly recommend booking shore excursions directly with the cruise line. You'll save money managing it on your own, but you also take on some added risks.

When our girls were younger, some of our favorite activities were beach excursions. We'd grab a cab once we got off the boat and have the driver take us to the nearest beach. Cruise lines will often offer beach day excursions as well, sometimes in partnership with a hotel, granting you access to the hotel facilities. That can be very useful for families. Once our girls got into grade school, we started booking snorkeling excursions. This is probably one of their favorite activities and something we do on every cruise. Now that we have tweens and teens, we can book more adventurous excursions like ziplining, hiking trips, bike tours and surf lessons. Again, if possible, talk to your kids about what appeals to them.

Snorkeling is a popular excursion kids love.(Photo by Kimberly Tate)

Get Ready for Your Cruise

Now that you've ironed out a lot of details about the cruise itself, let's talk about getting ready for it.

Don't Pack the Entire Dresser

You need to consider what to pack. As a rule of thumb, I have my girls pack an outfit a day plus a couple of nicer outfits or dresses for dinners. We also pack swimsuits and cover-ups if we're planning for a beach day shore excursion. Also, since many ships staff professional photographers, cruises give families the opportunity to have family portraits made. Pack coordinating outfits for a photo shoot, if you'd like that.

When packing, explain the activities your kids need to pack for and let them pick their outfits. If you have young kids, you can have them pick out a few of their favorite outfits and place them on their bed. Then you can actually check over the selections and make sure they're a fit. We started this with our girls when they were in preschool and now that they're middle schoolers, they pack completely on their own. This puts the responsibility on their shoulders for packing clothes they like, and it saves you from hearing any arguments if they don't want to wear what you chose.

Finally, make sure you pack plenty of sunscreen and sun protection. When kids are playing on the upper decks and heading out on shore excursions, they're getting a lot of sun exposure. Don't ruin your vacation by not packing enough sunscreen or a hat. Also, consider packing rash guard swim tops; they help keep kids safe from burns.

Sway Away Sickness

Personally, I have a terrible time with motion sickness when I cruise. I was always happy that my girls hadn't seemed to inherit my weak inner ear. But, recently, my youngest has started showing signs of motion sickness. On our recent cruise, I had no idea if she would suddenly have developed seasickness like she's developed car sickness. So, I packed to be ready just in case.

Even if no one in your family thinks they have motion sickness issues, I recommend packing some over-the-counter Dramamine, Bonine or MotionEaze, just in case. (Your doctor can also prescribe meclizine or the Transderm Scop patch.) There are shops on board where you can buy medicine, and even an infirmary, if you're really seasick and need a patch. However, coming prepared just in case, is a good plan.

Once On Board

Now you'll need to arm yourself with some tips for after embarkation when you're living on board the cruise ship.

Everything Has a Place

I'm all for being relaxed on vacation, but a cruise is not the time to let your kids become slobs. Those cabins can be tight for a family and will quickly become stress zones if everyone isn't helping keep their things picked up. Space is limited, so plan in advance for where things are going to go and get your kids to keep their stuff in the right place. One of the extras we always pack for a cruise is an over-the-door shoe organizer . We use magnets to hang it and everyone has a row to place things like wallets, flip-flops, sunglasses and brushes.

Suitcases can slide under the bed in the cabin so pack in a way that allows your kids to get outfits out easily. Using packing cubes or Ziploc bags can be perfect for this. Another option is to unpack and use the dresser and/or closet shelves for their clothes. Bring a laundry bag for each person so they can put their dirty clothes somewhere each day and you're not dealing with piles of laundry in the cabin.

Take Safety Measures

It's a good idea to give your kids some rules for safety when you're ready to cruise. This goes beyond the mandatory emergency muster drill you'll have to attend after boarding. A few of our rules for safety are not running on decks, not playing or hanging out around the edges of the ship and not going into anyone's cabin. The key is communication and making them aware of the dangers. We've told our girls that knowing how to behave safely and make good choices when traveling is an important part of growing up.

Give Your Kids Wings

Cruises present wonderful opportunities to give your kids some independence. (Helicopter parents may want to skip over this section.) We were spoiled early on since we cruised with family members and older cousins would hang out with our girls and take them around the ship on their own. Now that our girls are older, 11 and 14, they feel very comfortable on cruise ships and often walk on their own to go to the kids clubs or get food at the buffet.

Communication is a big key here. We make sure our girls are communicating with us about where they will be, and we all have a meet-up time and place. I recommend packing a dry erase board for your cabin, or you can even use a notebook, where you can all leave notes to each other about where you are at any given time. Cruises have given opportunities for our girls to feel independent and design their own day. Kids will have a harder time complaining about being bored or not having fun if they're the ones planning what they're doing. Disney Cruises also provide each cabin two included Wave phones to call and text with others onboard and at Castaway Cay.

If you have smaller kids, there are still opportunities to give them some freedom while cruising. Perhaps if you go to the buffet for a meal, pick a table and then let them make their own plate instead of following them around. Give them the chance to pick whatever they want to eat and then find your table again. Another opportunity might be to let them race downstairs to a certain floor while you choose to take the elevator and see who gets there first.

Bottom Line

We love to travel together and I really think cruises can be ideal vacations for other families as well. Kid’s Cruise Essentials

family cruise on beach

Although there are a lot of activities for kids on a cruise , it’s a good idea to bring a few small toys to keep your child busy in the cabin or even on the airplane.

You won’t have room for a lot. However, consider allowing each child to pack a small backpack with some toys, books and markers to keep them occupied.

If you’re going on a Caribbean, Bermuda or other warm weather cruise, sand toys are a great item to pack for beach days and shore excursions.

These collapsible sand toys take up less room and are easier to pack for your family cruise.

Recommended: Collapsible sand toys (check price & 4.5 Amazon reviews here)

It’s a good idea to bring mesh beach bags to carry sand toys and other items between the cruise ship and beach.

Recommended: Mesh bags for sand toys (check price & amazon reviews here)

2. Water Shoes

For the lido deck and pool, beach or shore excursions, water shoes are a necessary cruise essential for children.

cruise with kid

Recommended: Water shoes (great for kids of all ages)

If you’re visiting the Caribbean islands, Hawaii or Bermuda, you can expect sunny and warm weather. If you have young kids, bringing a sun hat with UV protection is a great idea. A baseball cap for older children and teens is great too.

cruise with kid

Recommended: Sun hat with UV protection (see different cols on Amazon)

4. Closed Toe Shoes

A standard pair of sneakers is perfect for a cruise. Remember that your child will need closed toe shoes to participate in some of the cruise ship activities and sports (don’t forget socks!).

5. Swim Goggles

kid on a cruise

Since the oceans and pools on the cruise ship are salt water, it’s important to pack a pair or two of swim goggles . Goggles don’t take up much room in your luggage, but will be used a lot throughout your cruise vacation.

cruise with kid

Recommended: Swim goggles (check price, style options & size on Amazon here)

6. Children’s Medication

Remember to pack pain reliever and fever reducing medication, as well as any other children’s medication you may use in your household.

Something to note is that cruise ships will have a limited supply of over the counter medications and first aid products , so be sure to pack what you may need.

7. Band-Aids

Consider packing a mini first aid kit with band-aids and antibiotic ointment to take care of any small cuts and scratches.

cruise with kid

Recommended: Travel first aid kit (see 3000+ 4.5* amazon reviews here)

9. Umbrella Stroller

Having a lightweight stroller both on the cruise ship and in ports will be a lifesaver (even if your child doesn’t usually use a stroller anymore).

An umbrella stroller is the easiest to pack and bring on a cruise – and is affordable.

cruise with kid

Recommended: Umbrella stroller (compact & lightweight – see price & over 10,000 amazon reviews here)

11. Children’s Sunscreen

On your family vacation, you will be spending a lot of time under the sun. Getting some children’s sunscreen is a great way to protect your kids from getting sunburned.

If your children like spending time in the pool or ocean, getting a reef safe, water resistant sunscreen is a great idea.

cruise with kid

Recommended: Reef friendly sunscreen

12. Children’s Insect Repellant

Picking up some children’s insect repellant is a good idea. Although there aren’t insects on the cruise, there may be mosquitos in some cruise ports (research before you go).

13. Packaged Snacks (Optional)

Although there are plenty of included food options onboard your cruise, bringing packaged snacks on a cruise can be practical.

Whether if it’s because your child is hungry after dinner or needs a small snack in a port of call, packaged snacks like granola bars can be handy.

Please note that you ports restrict the food you’re allowed to take off the cruise ship (usually fruit, vegetables and meats). Always check the rules before bringing anything off the ship.

Whether if it’s for bringing toys, snacks or miscellaneous items, ziploc style plastic baggies will be useful during your family cruise. Always pack a few resealable bags, as you never know when they’ll come in handy.

16. Small Inflatable Pool / bathtub (optional)

A genius cruise cabin hack for parents is to pack small inflatable pool or bath when cruising with babies or toddlers. These can placed at the bottom of the shower stall in your stateroom bathroom, since most do not have bathtubs.

  • Sippy cups / bottles

2. Sunscreen

Make sure to pack enough sunscreen for the duration of your trip. Reef safe sunscreen is preferred for Caribbean and Bahamas cruises.

3. Refillable Water Bottles

Packing some reusable water bottles for your family vacation is a great idea. This way, you can bring water off of the cruise ship and you won’t have to purchase water bottles when you are onboard the ship.

cruise with kid

Recommended: Refillable water bottles (collapsible to save space)

4. Motion Sensor Night Light

A battery powered motion sensor night light is a cruise cabin essential that is perfect for families. In the evening time, if the lights are off in your cabin, your stateroom will get very dark (especially an inside cabin).

If you or one of your family members gets up in the middle of the night, a night light will come in handy.

cruise with kid

Recommended: Motion sensor nightlight (check price & 1400+ Amazon reviews here)

5. Magnetic Hooks

A cool thing that new cruisers don’t know about cruises, is that the cruise cabin walls are usually metal. Magnet hooks can be used to add extra storage, making the most out of a small cruise ship cabin.

Using magnetic hooks is a real space saver and they’re super useful. You can hang up your cruise lanyards, sunhats or wet bathing suits on the magnetic hooks.

cruise with kid

Recommended: Magnet hooks (note, the higher the weight, the more hold you will get)

6. Power Bar (Non-Surge Protected)

Most cruise ship cabins will only have one or two outlets, and may not have any USB outlets (unless the cruise ship is new). Many cruisers like to pack a non-surge protected power bar .

Please note that surge protected power bars (ones like at home) are prohibited on cruise ships and they are likely to be confiscated. Only bring non-surge protected approved power strips on a cruise.

Recommended: Cruise ship power bar non-surge protected (this one has 9000+ 5* Amazon reviews)

On a multigenerational family cruise, my kids got to know their grandmother better — and my husband and I got free babysitting

  • My family has cruised several times and recently took my mother-in-law along on her first cruise.
  • Cruising with Grammy proved to be a great option for a multigenerational vacation.
  • Our experience on the Caribbean Princess was the perfect itinerary for older, first-time cruisers.

Insider Today

My kids are teenagers now, but we've been taking them on cruises since they were tiny. Each time we returned from our days at sea, I told my husband how much I wanted to take his parents on a cruise with us, as it seemed like the perfect multigenerational vacation to me for a variety of reasons. My father-in-law passed away unexpectedly last year, and the devastating loss made me even more determined to get my mother-in-law, who my kids call Grammy, onto a cruise ship with my family.

We finally planned an eight-day cruise aboard the Caribbean Princess this March, and we were all so excited. Not only did a cruise ship seem like a perfect spot to keep me, my husband, our kids, and Grammy all entertained for an entire week, but I thought my mother-in-law, who enjoys a slower pace of life, would enjoy the build-your-own-schedule style of a cruise.

The multigenerational trip , for which one of my mother-in-law's best friends tagged along as her travel partner, proved to be an unforgettable memory for all of us. My kids left the ship feeling like they got to know their grandmother — who lives far from our Florida home in Pennsylvania — even better, and so did I.

Cruising was a great way to spend time together

My mother-in-law had never cruised before, so we chose to book the Caribbean Princess because we'd had great experiences with Princess Cruises before. Plus, it had a great mixture of days at sea and ports of call, and the ports we visited were easy ones to navigate: Princess Cays in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and St. Thomas.

The trip was a perfect environment for making memories with my mother-in-law and her friend. On days at sea, there were tons of things for us to do: family activities, like dinner or trivia, that we'd all do together; individual activities, like paper-flower-making classes for the retirees in our group; and activities in the ship's teen club for my kids. On port days, we planned excursions through Princess Cruises that allowed everyone in our party to experience the destination, regardless of speed or physical abilities.

My kids got to see their Grammy be adventurous

While we focused on port excursions that offered driving tours and other slower-paced ways to see the destinations, my mother-in-law was a great sport when it came to being adventurous. In Puerto Rico, she climbed 100 steps to the top of a tower in the El Yunque National Forest tropical rainforest and tried mofongo for the first time on the streets of San Juan. She also rode a Skyride to a spot 700 feet above the harbor in St. Thomas to take in beautiful, panoramic views and climbed out onto rocks overlooking the beach on Princess' private island, Princess Cays.

Related stories

Seeing their grandmother's desire to see and learn new things was fun for my kids, and as experienced travelers, they enjoyed helping her along the way.

We had great conversations during meals

Most nights on the ship, we had dinner together in one of the main dining rooms. One night, we even splurged on a specialty dining experience, paying a bit extra for a steakhouse dinner at Princess' fleetwide restaurant, Crown Grill. Dining aboard a cruise ship is often a multi-course experience that unfolds at a leisurely pace, so having an hour or two to chat with their grandmother each night was special for my kids.

To keep things interesting, we took a book of questions along with us on the trip, breaking it out while we waited for our food to arrive each night and asking questions like, "What's your favorite way to connect with nature?" or, "Do you think money can by happiness?" Hearing each other's answers was a great way for everyone to connect and learn about each other.

Even when it didn't go as planned, we found things to laugh about

Combining a large group when traveling can bring its share of stressful situations, but even in the chaos we found things to laugh about. My kids are still talking about the time Grammy and her friend went back to the tour bus without us in Puerto Rico, and we thought we lost them during our excursion to Castillo San Felipe del Morro. But, all miscommunications and frustrating moments aside, the trip made us stronger as a family and was well worth those moments of stress.

Yes, bringing Grammy along meant we got some free babysitting

Although my kids are now teenagers, having Grammy on board the ship to help out was an invaluable part of our vacation. My husband and I went to another specialty dining restaurant on board the ship for a date night and even stayed in town in St. Thomas for some grow-up time, sightseeing, and shopping while the kids returned to the ship with my mother-in-law.

Though we spent the bulk of our time hanging out together as a family, having some extra help aboard the ship allowed my husband and I to make some vacation memories with just the two of us.

She's always supported us, and it was nice to thank her

My mother-in-law has always been there for my husband and me. She has taken care of our kids while we reconnect by traveling together and shared wisdom with us when we're struggling with life's stresses. It was a true joy to share our vacation with her and treat her to a week of sunshine and sightseeing after all the ways she's supported us throughout our nearly 20 years of marriage. Cruising together as a family was a great way to thank her.

Being together held an unexpected benefit

The last two days of our sailing were days at sea and, early on the first day, we learned of a family tragedy that had occurred back in Pennsylvania, where most of my husband's family lives. The tragedy was significant enough that my mother-in-law probably would have gone home early if we had been on a vacation on land. But because we were in the middle of the ocean, we were unable to cut the trip short and spent two days together processing what had occurred.

While there's never an optimal time for a great loss to occur, we found ourselves grateful that we were close to my mother-in-law when the news came in so we could help her process her grief in those first few days. Had we been in Florida and she in Pennsylvania, we'd have felt powerless to help comfort her, but being together during that time proved to be invaluable.

Experiencing a family tragedy during our vacation wasn't in the plan, but it was a reminder to all of us of the importance of being close to family and experiencing the world together while we can.

Your Best Summer Getaway Cruise With Kids

How to relax on your next family cruise.

By Charu Suri | Published on August 10, 2023

In my summer getaway cruises over the years with my family, I have discovered that there are a variety of ways to bond with your children and still find time for quiet relaxation. And while large ships filled with amusement park-style amenities can seem like a more exciting vacation than a tranquil one, there are still plenty of options for those craving peace and quiet — if you know where to look.

In addition to carving out some battery-recharging time at sea during your summer getaway cruise, you can also look for ways to add some quiet moments to your time on shore. Whether you and your family choose to cruise to The Bahamas, an archipelago famous for its turquoise waters or journey to Mexico for margaritas and sunshine, your itinerary doesn't have to be stressful, no matter how many kids there are in tow. Here are some ways to have the best summer vacation on your exciting getaway cruise with immediate family, close relatives and friends … and still make time to truly unwind.

Plan To Keep Kids Entertained Onboard

Splashaway Bay Kids Eating Ice Cream

Family time is important, but I have learned over the years that being on a cruise also means parents have the luxury of getting away from the kids, who can be happily engaged in other activities while adults enjoy a summer vacation with friends and my partner. Schedule activities for them (they will be well-taken care of) while you indulge in a little "me" time. Couples can take turns spending some time alone or reconnect with a little peace and quiet for everyone to have their best summer vacation.

In my experience, this is possible even on the most lively, exciting cruise. Take a ship like Oasis of the Seas ® , for example. This 5,400-passenger floating city boasts the biggest aquapark at sea, an escape room challenge and a glow-in-the-dark laser tag faceoff. With all these fun options, it may be hard at first to envision a way to do it all and still leave time for relaxation. However, because there are kids' clubs designed for children of all ages, you can certainly get some time to yourself. Parents with babies and toddlers can get a break using the drop-off nursery, Adventure Ocean Babies, and there are also programs for kids ages 3 to 5 and 6 to 12. You'll find that 13- to 17-year-olds can escape to a lounge of their own with music, movies and gaming, or try their hand at the water slides on the pool deck, giving you time to, say, sip cocktails at the Bionic Bar ®  or read a book on the Sun Deck or your balcony.

When everyone gathers together at dinner on your summer getaway cruise, your gang will have plenty of stories to share. If you sail on Wonder of the Seas℠, for example, you'll find an impressive array of dining choices, including Southern fare at The Mason Jar℠  (where you won't want to miss the bread pudding) and Mexican treats at El Loco Fresh®. There, the grown-ups can toast with spicey pineapple jalapeño margaritas. If taking in shows is how you recharge as a group after dinner, there are a myriad of options. Look for one of Broadway's hit musicals: Wonder of the Seas℠ offers a production of "Cats" and giving yourself over to "Memories" is a great way for musical lovers to unwind.

Create A Gameplan For Your Best Summer Vacation

Setting a goal to come home refreshed? Make a checklist of family activities that you really want to do and pick a few to enjoy together each day, rather than packing each moment with plans. Then, use some of that time you have carved out to do whatever makes you feel most refreshed. You can use some of your "chill time" at the spa — indulging in a massage or a body wrap, or just stretching out in the heated lounge chairs — or at the gym taking yoga classes, if that helps you exhale.

Or, if you find yourself unwinding best with a cocktail in hand, you can find a quiet bar to simmer down in. At the Trellis Bar  on Royal Caribbean's ®  Oasis Class ships, you can settle into a garden with a memorably delicious cocktail, such as an Aperol spritz or a Bloody Mary. The adults-only Solarium Bar  is another tranquil spot on Oasis Class ships. There you can sip a British Pimm's Cup or a sweet and sour treat like Washington's Apple, made with Crown Royal, sour apple liqueur and cranberry juice.

In addition, think about your desire to relax when you're picking a cabin for your summer getaway cruise. Would adjoining cabins not only give older children extra room to spread out but also offer you the best chance at having a relaxing moment each night before bed? Is a balcony your personal preference for where to sequester yourself for some alone time when you have a moment? Thinking through your needs before you book will help you to select both the configuration and location that best serves your whole crew.

Relax In Nassau

Cabbage Beach Paradise Island

In my best summer vacations over the years with my family, I have discovered the best places to relax and bond in every port.

You can look for a shore excursion that everyone in your group will love. A full-day stopover in the beautiful island of Nassau — one of the most visited cruise ports — allows you plenty of hours to explore some of the best white sand beaches in the world, including Cable Beach, which hugs six miles of gorgeous coastline. Known for its soothing and calming turquoise waters, Cable Beach is a more relaxing alternative to the more popular Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island, making it a picture-perfect stop for relaxing family time. There are plenty of shallow waters where kids can spot coral and starfish while mom and dad stretch out on the white-sand beach.

Personally, my favorite way to take in Nassau with the family (especially for my daughter, who loves animals!) is to book a tour to Pearl Island to spend an afternoon swimming with the Instagram-famous pigs, an unforgettable day and one of the best summer spots for young adults.

If you're a family of history buffs, you could also take in a leisurely tour of Fort Fincastle and Water Tower, a cut limestone historic building constructed in 1793 to protect the city. Located at the highest spot on the island, this vantage point was a great lookout for pirates in the early 1800s. Today, it's an ideal spot to exhale and enjoy the blood pressure-lowering view of the horizon.

A more off-the-beaten-path way to relax on Nassau is exploring the lush multi-terraced Versailles Gardens on Paradise Island. This is a place that will make you feel as though you stepped into another era. Here you'll find stone paths and bright bougainvillea. And, if the rest of your family prefers to relax on the beach, consider going alone — you can always catch up with your crew after soaking in some history.

Fort Fincastle Queen's Staircase, Nassau, Bahamas

Unwind In Cozumel

Cozumel Columbia Reef Snorkeling Father and Son

Located 12 miles off the coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, Cozumel is one of the most-visited ports for a reason. It boasts the second largest coral reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Reef, as well as access the beaches and theme parks that are designed for families.

The reef is easily accessible by boat, and snorkeling there is a great way to unwind as a family, especially if your kids love the water. It is a particularly ideal spot for young adults who want to learn about the sea creatures in this part of the world (there are over 500 species of fish). If you want to capture some photographic memories, look no further than El Cielo. This particularly shallow reef is almost ethereal in nature: remember to bring your underwater camera to capture the sting rays, starfish and the way the light reflects off the white sand.

Looking to stay on the shore? Palancar Beach is one of the best spots for families to relax on the island, and it's just a 20-minute ride from the port. Another option: Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park, located within the island's national reef marine park, offers many activities in a self-contained setting. This is a great spot for members of your family to relax in different ways: kids can take their pick from watching a fun sea lion show to swimming with dolphins, while mom or dad can escape to a lush private cabana facing the ocean.

Soak In The Sun In Labadee

Nothing offers a better mix of thrills and chill than a day at the beach, and cruise line private islands tend to be some of the best places for a resort experience. A visit to Royal Caribbean's private 260-acre Labadee — located on a peninsula on Haiti's northern coast — is no exception. Here, you'll find fun activities for family members of all ages. Thrill seekers indulge in adrenaline-pumping activities like zip lining, parasailing, jet-skiing or the signature Dragon's Splash water slide. Best of all, while tweens and teens enjoy all the water sports, grownups can get some quality time at the swim-up floating bar off Adrenalin Beach.

Opt for a cabana on Nellie's Beach to kick back and relax as a family. If you're ready to splurge, choose an overwater cabana for views of the lush mountains and priceless memories that will live on as part of your family's best summer vacation ever.

Texas mother arrested after allegedly leaving young children alone to take a cruise

cruise with kid

A Texas woman was arrested after allegedly leaving her children at home alone to take a cruise.

Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, left her 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter by themselves in their Houston apartment to go on vacation on April 4, according to a criminal complaint.

She is charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.

Deputies with the Harris County Constable’s Office made a wellness check on Tuesday following a call for service. A witness told them that neighbors in the complex were concerned about the safety of two kids left on their own in one of the units. The witness said other residents had seen Williams leaving with bags and luggage and did not see her come back.

“The apartment was in complete disarray and had trash and left-over food all over the unit,” the document said. There was a “very potent smell of urine” inside as well.

“No adults were present supervising the juveniles, and none appeared to have been present since the Defendant’s departure,” the document continued. Deputies also found a camera in the apartment that Williams used to watch and talk to the kids during her trip, and her son had a phone he used to text her.

The document did not specify which cruise line Williams sailed with or where she went. “Deputies tried contacting the Defendant to make the scene, but she was not cooperating and was switching up her story on her whereabouts,” the document said.

The Houston Fire Department was called to ensure the children “were in good health and not malnourished,” and Child Protective Services reported to the scene before releasing the children to their aunt.

An attorney for Williams was not listed.

A Texas mother was arrested after she allegedly abandoned her two young kids to go on a cruise — leaving the children home alone for nearly a week, officials said.

Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, was hit with two charges of child endangerment last Thursday after officers found her 8-year-old and 6-year-old alone in their high-rise apartment complex in Houston with no adult supervision, according to the Harris Country Constable- Precinct 5.

Williams left her kids to take her solo vacation on April 4 and returned the night of April 10. She was arrested the following day.

Concerned neighbors called emergency responders after worrying about the siblings’ welfare, according to the constable.

The neighbors saw Williams leaving the building with luggage on April 4 and noticed she failed to come home after several days, according to court records obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Deputies visited the apartment on April 9 and found the two kids alone in the apartment trashed with garbage and food all around the floor and a “potent smell of urine,” the documents state.

The place was in “complete disarray,” deputies said.

The children said their mother had left to go on a cruise and was communicating with them through a camera in the apartment and via text messages to the 8-year-old.

The kids were checked by paramedics as well as Child Protective Services. They were removed from the apartment and are now in the care of their aunt.

Neighbors told deputies it was “not the first time” they had been left at home with no adults.

“We are still putting together the facts and circumstances of how these children were left alone for several days,” Constable Ted Heap said. “But the important thing is they are safe now and those responsible should be held accountable for leaving these kids in an unsafe situation.”

Williams was booked into Harris County Jail on a $40,000 bond, according to jail records.

She is set to be in court Monday.

Mom accused of leaving 2 young children home alone for days to go on cruise

The Houston woman was charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.

A Texas mother has been arrested after allegedly leaving her two young children home alone for days to go on a cruise, court records show.

Lakesha Williams, 29, of Houston, has been charged with abandoning a child with intent to return, a felony, according to a criminal complaint.

Neighbors at her high-rise apartment building reportedly saw Williams leave with luggage on April 4 but "never saw her return," according to the complaint.

A woman at the apartment complex reached out to law enforcement to request a wellness check because the neighbors were worried about the children's safety, according to the complaint.

Deputies conducted a welfare check on Tuesday, five days after Williams allegedly left, and found an 8-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl alone in the apartment, the complaint stated. The apartment was in "complete disarray," with trash and food strewn about and a "very potent smell of urine," the complaint stated.

The children reportedly told police that their mother left them on April 4 "to go on vacation on a cruise and they did not know when she would return," the complaint stated.

It did not appear that any adults had been supervising the children since then, according to the complaint. Williams allegedly used a video camera to watch and talk to the children during that time, and the boy had a phone he was using to text her, according to the complaint.

"These children were definitely left unattended for many days and put in serious harm's way," Keegan Childers, the chief prosecutor of the 209th District Court, told Houston ABC station KTRK .

A Child Protective Services agent responded to the scene to ensure the children were in good health and they were released into the custody of their aunt, according to the complaint.

Deputies tried contacting Williams to have her respond to the scene "but she was not cooperating and was switching up her story on her whereabouts," the complaint stated.

Williams was arrested on Thursday and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, online court records show. The records do not list any attorney information for her.

ABC News was unable to reach the aunt for comment. She declined to comment to KTRK.

Mom Allegedly Left Kids, 6 and 8, Alone at Home for a Week While She Went on Cruise: Police

Lakesha Woods Williams faces a child abandonment charge after allegedly leaving her kids alone to go on a cruise

Harris County Constable's Office Precinct 5/Facebook

A Texas mother is facing a child abandonment charge after police allege she left her two children, aged 6 and 8 years old, alone for several days while going on a cruise. Lakesha Woods Williams was arrested and booked into jail last Thursday, according to inmate records reviewed by PEOPLE.

Harris County Sheriff's Office records show Williams, 29, was charged with abandoning a child with intent to return and is being held on $25,000 bond.

The mother of two was arrested after officers responded to a call concerning her children allegedly being left alone in the family’s apartment in Houston, according to information shared on social media by Harris County Constable Precinct 5.

The constable’s office said Williams left her two young children at the apartment on April 4.

“On April 9th, deputies found the children alone in the apartment, and they told deputies their mother was on a cruise,” the office said in its news release. “Paramedics and CPS were called to the scene to check on the kids health and safety.”

The constable’s office alleged Williams returned home on the night of April 10 and was arrested the following day when officers returned to the apartment to follow up on the child welfare call.

"We are still putting together the facts and circumstances of how these children were left alone for several days," Constable Ted Heap said in a statement. “But the important thing is they are safe now and those responsible should be held accountable for leaving these kids in an unsafe situation."

The office said “both children are now in the care of a relative.”

Fox News reported that Williams was due in court on Monday.

Local ABC 13 reported that Williams’ neighbors had been concerned about the children for some time and that the family’s apartment appeared disheveled when officers arrived. "Many of the residents were worried about the children and have said this is not the first time that something like this has occurred," Williams' charging document alleged, according to the outlet.

ABC reported that officers said the apartment smelled of urine when they arrived for the welfare check and that it seemed the 6 and 8-year-old children were attempting to cook for themselves while their mother was allegedly away on the cruise.

Lakesha Woods Williams faces two charges of child endangerment with intent to return

A mother has appeared in court on child neglect charges after leaving her childen so she could go on a cruise.

Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, left the two children – aged just six and eight – by themselves at their home in a high-rise apartment block in Houston, Texas.

She then went on a six-day cruise from April 4 until the evening of April 10.

When she returned, police were waiting for her after neighbours contacted them expressing concern for the younsters’ welfare.

The children, who told deputies that their mother was on a cruise, found the house in a state of disarray.

There was leftover food and trash around the home and it smelled of urine.

The children told deputies that their mother was on a cruise.

Constable Ted Heap said: ‘We are still putting together the facts and circumstances of how these children were left alone for several days.

‘But the important thing is they are safe now and those responsible should be held accountable for leaving these kids in an unsafe situation.’

Both children were taken into the care of a relative after being rescued.

Williams was arrested on Thursday and faces two charges of child endangerment with intent to return. She was booked into the Harris County Detention Facility the day after she returned home and her bond was set at $25,000.

She appeared in court on Monday and a judge upheld her bond.

Williams’ defense attorney argued that she had paid her cousin to watch her children but that he took the money and did not carry out the duty.

District Attorney Keengan Childers said: ‘You left your child unattended for four days. Let’s say you leave the country out on a trip, and the cousin doesn’t go to take care of the children,

‘If this is really a plane flight like she says it is, wouldn’t you as a parent be on the first plane back immediately?’
