Montezuma Waterfall Canopy Tour

What to expect.

The Montezuma Waterfall Canopy Tour is one of the zone’s premier attractions. It takes you into a deeper and different perspective of how our nature looks from another angle, feeling the wind and pure oxygen, while the adrenaline flows through your veins. This unique experience combined with the peaceful environment and friendly experienced guides, makes it must, if you are traveling around Montezuma with your family or friends.

The canopy basically consists of a series of nine cables and thirteen platforms suspended high above the forest floor. The guests glide along the cables using a pulley and a breaking device.

What’s the main attraction

Besides the amazing view and occasionally sighting of howler and white-faced monkeys, parrots, and iguanas, the main natural attraction of this zip line tour are the famous Montezuma waterfalls where you can take pictures and go for a swim in the pools carved by the cascading waters.

In the Sun Trails Canopy Tour Montezuma, you'll double-up on breathtaking sights: soaring over a mile of cables laced amidst 13 platforms above tropical dry forest along the Pacific coastline and hiking to the cascading waters of the Montezuma waterfalls.

Arrive at Sun Trails' headquarters with anticipation and get right to it. Let the tour guides fit you into your harness, helmet, gloves, and watch while they demonstrate the proper riding and braking techniques. Shake off the nerves in the first of nine total cables, riding straight without spinning or releasing the pulley gliding across the wire.

For the next few rides, make like a mot-mot and loosen up as you fly over the tops of Guanacaste and Tempisque trees to land on suspended metal platforms gripped against tree trunks. By the third or fourth cable, you'll get the 'hang' of it, and can start taking in the sights. On the fifth cable, zoom over the Montezuma River flowing from Cobano down to the Pacific Ocean to land on a hillside platform. There, take off your equipment and hike about five minutes to the tour's star attraction: the Montezuma waterfalls.

Spend the next 30 minutes cherishing the glorious landscape: splashing around the river, tire swinging across pooled water, jumping down the 45-foot cascade, or hiking an extra five minutes to the base of the sublime 100-foot waterfall. Even after a good rest, it's hard to leave the natural beauty, but you'll find motivation knowing the next few platforms offer incredible views of Playa Grande, Playa Tambor and Tortgua Island.

Cross a 98-foot long suspension bridge to reach platform 12 of 13. Brace yourself there, ready for maximum exhilaration and speed - you can go almost 40 miles per hour - across the last and longest 1,148-foot cable, alighting on a platform just a few steps down from the headquarters. Remove the equipment and watch pictures from the day cycle on a TV as you rehydrate with ice-cold water.

Recommendations

Wear swimsuit and closed-toe waterproof shoes

Bring a waterproof camera, towel and change of clothes.

Take the extra five-minute hike to the 100-foot waterfall

Montezuma Waterfalls: Best Ways to Access

  • Jenn and Matt
  • Activities , Family Travel , Waterfalls

If you’re visiting Montezuma on Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, chances are you’ll be heading to the Montezuma Waterfalls at some point during your trip. This set of three waterfalls is one of the area’s biggest attractions and for good reason. Not only are the falls themselves beautiful but you can swim in the refreshing pools and even jump from some of them if you dare. In this post, we’ll tell you more about the Montezuma Waterfalls and the two best ways to access them.

Montezuma Waterfalls: Best Ways to Access

About the Montezuma Waterfalls

The Montezuma Waterfalls are a set of three different cascades.

The Top Waterfall is the smallest at only about 15 feet (5 meters) tall, but dumps into a nice deep pool that is perfect for swimming and jumping. How high the jump is depends on where you stand on the rocks, but varies from about 5 feet (1.5 meters) to 15 feet (5 meters). There is also a rope swing on a tree here, so you can hurl yourself into the pool that way too. This is a great place to swim and hang out for an hour or so.

Montezuma Waterfalls: Best Ways to Access

The Middle Waterfall is hidden between the Top Waterfall and the Lower Waterfall. You actually have to swim across the pool of the Top Waterfall to see it. Once you do, you can look down at the roughly 40 foot (12 meter) drop. People do jump from the top of this waterfall—we saw someone do it—but there have been accidents where people have died so we don’t recommend it. It’s cool to see from above, though. Just watch your step when peeking over the edge as sometimes the rocks are slippery.

Montezuma Waterfalls: Best Ways to Access

The Lower Waterfall is the biggest at about 80 feet (25 meters) and also the most visited. This waterfall has a nice pool to swim in while gazing up at the cascading water. During our visit, it hadn’t rained for months so there wasn’t much flow and the water in the pool was quite murky. Still, it was very pretty and there are smooth rocks to relax on and some trees for shade. It’s not safe to jump from the top of this waterfall because of the dangerous rocks, so if you’re looking for a thrill, plan to visit the upper falls.

Montezuma Waterfalls: Best Ways to Access

Note: While researching our visit to the waterfalls, we were a little confused about how to best see all three. To clear things up, we visited them twice by two different access points to see how they differed.

Accessing the Montezuma Waterfalls: The Two Options

There are two main options when hiking to the Montezuma Waterfalls, the Riverbed Trail  and the Canopy Tour Trail .

The Riverbed Trail

Note: This is the easiest way to get to the Lower Waterfall, which is the biggest cascade and the one that most people visit. Getting to the other two from this direction is a hard hike up some very steep stairs.

The Riverbed Trail is probably the best one if you just want to visit the Lower Waterfall. This waterfall is popular because it is the biggest, has the shortest hike, is free (except parking), and is closer to town. You don’t need a car to get here if you’re staying near downtown Montezuma. Here’s how it works:

From downtown Montezuma, walk or drive about 0.3 miles (0.5 km) south to the small bridge that crosses the Rio Montezuma. Just after the bridge there is a trail and parking area on the right. Parking costs ₡1000 (about $2), otherwise there is no entrance fee. The trail is dirt at first but soon enters the rocky riverbed. During the dry season, there are plenty of different ways to walk along the boulders and rocks or next to them, but when it is rainier and the water levels are higher, the hike can be much more difficult. At a couple of tricky spots, there are ropes along the riverbank to help you pass. Some of the rocks are also very slippery so be sure to bring footwear with good tread that you don’t mind getting wet like Keens or Tevas . After hiking for about 20 minutes, you will reach the Lower Waterfall and pool.

Montezuma Waterfalls: Best Ways to Access

To access the two upper waterfalls from the riverbed, look for a rustic set of stairs about 100 feet (30 meters) before the lower waterfall on your left. This is a steep climb with around 200 stairs and best described as moderate to difficult. After about 20 minutes or so, you’ll reach a small structure at the top. An employee from Sun Trails (the zip-line company that owns the property) may ask for a fee of ₡1000 ($2) per person to keep going (no one was there at the time of our visit in April). After the structure, there are about 80 more steps going down to the river (5-10 minutes). You’ll come out at the Top Waterfall and then can swim to the Middle Waterfall if you want.

Montezuma Waterfalls: Best Ways to Access

Tip: While there is a very rustic and somewhat vertical trail to the right of the Lower Waterfall that also leads to the top, we recommend taking the stairs. The other trail is very extreme and somewhat dangerous.

Canopy Tour Trail

Note: This is the easiest way to access the two upper waterfalls. Getting to the Lower Waterfall from this direction takes more effort because you have to climb down and back up a very steep set of stairs.

The Canopy Tour Trail for accessing the Montezuma Waterfalls requires a car or at least a ride. This way brings you through the property of Sun Trails, over two of their hanging bridges, and then to the Top Waterfall. From there, you can climb on the rocks and then swim across the pool to see the Middle Waterfall. If you want to see the Lower Waterfall from this direction, you will have to make a steep climb (almost 300 steps each way) or access the Lower Waterfall on a separate occasion using the Riverbed Trail.

We did this trail carrying our four-month-old son, but only to the upper falls. We didn’t do the treacherous stairs. This way was better, in our opinion, because we didn’t have to climb on the slippery rocks of the Riverbed Trail with him in the baby carrier. The trek to the two upper falls would also be great for older kids who can do some moderate hiking on their own. Here’s how it works:

To get to the canopy tour company, drive south from downtown Montezuma about 0.4 miles (0.6 km), crossing the bridge, and take a right after Hotel Amor del Mar. Go up the steep hill (4×4 recommended), past the Butterfly Garden until you reach the Sun Trails Canopy/Zip-line on your right. Pay the entrance fee for the self-guided hike ($4/pp) and they will explain about the trail.

This way starts out with a couple of awesome hanging bridges where you can walk along the treetops and look down at the forest. From there, the trail meanders downhill, with some uphill and flat portions, for about 20 minutes before reaching the Top Waterfall. There are lots of rustic steps and tree roots along this trail but it is only a moderate hike. Along the way, we saw a lot of birds like the Turquoise-browed Motmot, Scarlet Tanager, and several Long-tailed Manakins. Sun Trails also has put out some signs that help you learn about the local flora and fauna.

Montezuma Waterfalls: Best Ways to Access

After you have checked out the two upper falls, if you are up for it, you can climb the almost 300 stairs down to the lower waterfall. This is definitely a challenge, especially on the way back, so only do it if you are in pretty good shape.

Other Helpful Information

  • Sun Adventures is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. if you want to access the waterfalls via the Canopy Tour Trail. They also offer a zip-line tour that includes time at the waterfalls for $45/pp.
  • You can access the falls by the Riverbed Trail at any time; there are no hours.
  • Don’t visit the waterfalls too late as it’s no fun trying to get back in the dark. Sunset is around 5:30 every day in Costa Rica.
  • Bring plenty of water and snacks for the trail. It can be really hot and you’ll definitely burn some calories on the hike.
  • Don’t forget the footwear. We recommend something like Keens  or Teva hiking sandals that you can get wet.
  • Be careful of high waters and strong currents. River conditions can change quickly because of rain so if you notice a sudden change, it’s best to get out of the water immediately.
  • If you are visiting during the rainy season (May through November) and planning to take photos, think about if you want a LifeProof case for your phone or a dry bag  to keep things safe and dry. A GoPro or regular waterproof camera (we love our Olympus Tough ) is also fun to bring to waterfalls and you don’t have to worry about it getting wet.
  • Most importantly, don’t jump from the waterfalls unless you are 100% sure it is safe. Ask a local, follow someone’s lead, or play it safe and don’t jump if you aren’t sure. The bigger hospitals are hours away and getting an injured person out on the rustic trail is no easy feat.

No matter how you access the Montezuma Waterfalls, the experience getting there is very rewarding. The area is beautiful, surrounded by thick jungle and amazing wildlife, and there is nothing like swimming in a refreshing pool after a strenuous hike!

I am overdue in thanking you for your wonderful reporting on Costa Rica, Matt and Jenn. My family and I are living in Monteverde for the year (I’m an author and I write about our Monteverde experience at warmerthancanada.com). We find ourselves repeatedly turning to your website as we plan trips off the mountain. This last weekend, we were in Montezuma and we really appreciated your instructions for getting to the lower falls. It was a perfect hike to do with our kids–ages 6 and 9– and with recent rain, we were rewarded with a huge falls and pool to swim in. Thanks for your generous work!

Hi Katie, Thats great to hear! Glad your family had a good visit and especially happy to hear the kids had fun. Our son Samuel was really little when we brought him there but he’s walking now so it won’t be long until he’s ready to go exploring waterfalls. That’s really cool about your family living in Monteverde. We will have to check out your website to see what you’ve been up to. Pura vida!

Thanks again Jen and Matt. We’ve been here six months and are leaving soon. We’ve been wanting to see these falls before we go. Thanks so much!

THANK YOU for this blog post. I like to have every little detail about an adventure before I go on it, and this is BY FAR the most detailed post on how to hike these waterfalls. Thank you for lowering my anxiety going into this hike and making me feel like I knew exactly what I was doing. My boyfriend and I did the hike while we were in Montezuma and loved it. What a beautiful place.

Hi Danielle, Glad that the post was helpful and that you had a good time. Thanks for letting us know!

THERE WERE STAIRS?! In 2014, my sister and I hiked the Riverbed trail, teamworked our way onto the high rocks beneath the waterfall, and then took that “vertical, extreme, dangerous” trail up and around to the rocks above the middle falls. Accurate description— we had to hang from tree roots at various points to get to the next footing. When we got to the rocks above the 50-foot jump, one spot had an X carved into the rocks, and we hoped that meant “jump here.” I ended up with a permanent tailbone injury and bruises covering my thighs (Climbing —if you can call dangling down to the next step “climbing” —back down that vertical trail with that injury was the craziest adventure of my life so far.) BE CAREFUL, ADVENTURERS!

I can’t find ‘Anywhere’s Local Tour’ Company…. hmmm… I wonder if they are not in business anymore?

Also – THANK YOU for all of the AMAZING CR info!!!!!!

Hi Whit, Not sure what you are referring to??

Hi Matt and Jen, I’m also very much overdue in thanking you for your excellent blog. My husband and I have just spent a week in beautiful Montezuma and visited the Waterfalls. It’s the end of the dry season and there was really pretty much a trickle of water. However, this made the hike (we made in to the second waterfall) much safer because the rocks were dry. It is an arduous climb. We are 70 and pretty fit. We took our time and enjoyed the nature, birdsong, etc.

Hi Linda, Glad you had good time in Montezuma! Yes, the falls are very small at the end of dry season. You are adventurous for doing that hike! Thanks for the kind words.

We love your blog, Matt and Jenn. We used to live in Costa Rica and found it super helpful. We are in Montezuma this week. Thanks for your description of the lower and upper falls. We were interested in visiting the upper Montezuma falls, which we did this morning. We just wanted to let you and other readers know a few things have changed since your blog post, so just wanted to provide some updated information. Once you turn right at Amor de Mar, go up the hill, which is now paved. Turn right at the sign that says “Sunshine Sanctuary Jungle Lodge”, which is immediately past the Butterfly Brewing Company. Once you are on the dirt road drive about 300 meters until the end. You can park at the parking lot of the Sunshine Sanctuary. Then, you can follow the trail just left of the entrance to the lodge. When we went there was no one collecting money, but on our way out there was a person that seemed like they may collect money. The walk to the upper falls is quite close (stay to the left at first fork and then stay to right at second fork), We swam and jumped into the pools at the upper falls. Great spot to cool off. Another person we saw said the hanging bridges were blocked or closed, but we did not go to the hanging bridges nor the lower falls.

Hi Cynthia, Thanks so much for the update. We’ll have to check out this access point next time we’re in Montezuma. Pura vida!

Hi, thank you for the great blog, so much detailed information! We are traveling to CR in November, so excited to be bringing our kids aged 7 and 8 this time. We are flying into Liberia renting a car, and spending 4 nights in Arenal area. Then we have 5 nights left on our trip, we were thinking that we would take the Ferry over and head to Montezuma for a couple of nights and then Samara. Both spots sound like great family locations, but wondering if we should spend 3 nights in Montezuma or 2 nights, and 3 nights in Samara. We want to hike to the waterfall in Montezuma, see Cabo Blanco park, do the luminescence tour, in Samara we were thinking a nice last couple of nights to enjoy the area, beach and ocean. Does this sound like a good itinerary for our 5 nights? Wish we could stay longer!!! Thanks so much!

Hi Erin, That sounds like a good plan. You’ll see a couple of different areas of the country with that itinerary. La Fortuna has a very different feel from the Nicoya Peninsula.

We would do 3 nights in Montezuma probably so that you can get in all those activities. Then leave earlyish to get to Samara so that you have some time to enjoy town that first day you’re there.

FYI – It’s actually a little bit longer to take the ferry for La Fortuna to Montezuma. It adds about 1 hour of travel time compared to just driving there.

Canopy Zipline - Suntrails

Free vacation planning.

This Montezuma canopy zipline tour is a trek over the tree tops in the rain forest northeast of Montezuma, Costa Rica. The jungle is part of the Romelia Wildlife Refuge located about 165 feet behind the tide line of Playa Grande, the white sand beach of Montezuma. This area is at the southwest tip of the Nicoya Peninsula on the Gulf of Nicoya.

Your tour begins with transportation from your hotel to the beginning of the zipline adventure which is only a short distance away from the village of Montezuma. Your professional, bilingual guides will show you how to use all the zipline equipment.

You will be fitted with a safety vest and harness that will be used to secure you to the ziplining cables. A guide will be at every platform to connect you to the next cable and another will receive you at the other end.

The Montezuma canopy tour consists of 12 platforms and 9 cables. While zooming over the tree tops, suddenly there is an opening in the canopy where you will have a splendid view of the Pacific Ocean. After the 5th cable you will find yourself at the popular Montezuma Waterfall at a height of about 80 feet.

At this waterfall you will take a break to enjoy the natural swimming pool. You can jump from designated areas 12 or 35 feet above into the pool, or if it is more comfortable for you, there are stairs that will descend to the swimming area. After about a 30 minute break you will complete the remaining 4 cables flying over one of the most beautiful settings in Costa Rica.

Your guides are also knowledgeable about identifying the wildlife and plants that will be surrounding you. Over half of all species of plants live in the tops of the trees. You could be fortunate enough to see birds like the elusive MotMot, Long tailed Manakins and nesting Tiger Herons. In addition, the area is home to monkeys, iguanas, butterflies, and more!

On the way back to your hotel there will be a stop in the colorful beach town of Montezuma for you to do some light shopping, take photos and look around if you like.

This adventure comes with bilingual, certified guides, bottled water, all zipline equipment including gloves, safety harness and snap shackles, plus instructions on safety procedures.

You will be provided with round trip transportation from your hotel in Montezuma, Santa Teresa, or Tambor. One way transit can take from 10 to 45 minutes depending on where you are staying. The entire tour, including round trip transportation and the ziplining experience, may take from 4 to 6 hours.

Please wear completely enclosed hiking shoes. You’ll want to have your bathing suit and towel, sunscreen, insect repellent, a dry change of clothing and your camera. If you are traveling during the rainy season, typically November through April, you may want to bring your rain gear and a waterproof camera.

Please note that there is a weight limit of 260 lbs and this adventure includes a number of stairs to consider.

Most importantly, have fun!

Montezuma Area Excursions

Welcome to Montezuma, one of the most beautiful and memorable places in the world. Voted one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Central America by Forbes Magazine, Montezuma’s pristine coasts are sure to dazzle even the most jaded traveler. In addition, 30 minutes away are the beaches of Malpais, voted by the Forbes as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the entire world.

Costa Rica is known throughout the world as an eco-friendly country, whose wildlife thrives, and whose jungles are actually expanding every year due to careful stewardship of the country’s natural resources. Ninety percent of electric power in Costa Rica is generated by renewable sources, such as hydro-electric, wind, and geo-thermal.

During your stay at Anamaya Resort, you will have the opportunity to experience many amazing adventures. You will see monkeys, parrots, and other animals.

Remote Waterfall Hike

In addition to the famous Montezuma Falls which are right next to our facility, we can visit another impressive waterfall, which is a twenty minute drive from Anamaya. This amazing waterfall is unmarked and rarely visited by tourists. It consists of a long series of pools that drop one into the other, and one large pool with a rope swing. Known as the Florida Waterfall, it’s also quite a bit easier to walk to, for people who aren’t able to hike all the way down in the canyon to Montezuma Falls. More info on the Florida Waterfall: Montezumabeach.com/florida-waterfall/

Horseback Riding

Montezuma and Costa Rica are famous for their horse culture. The area’s cowboys, and cowgirls, still use horses to round up and move their cattle from pasture to pasture. We will put you on horseback to ride down the beach and visit the remote and undeveloped Playa Grande, Playa Cocolito, and El Chorro waterfall, that pours off a cliff and splashes into the sea. Another great horseback adventure is to visit the Florida Waterfall, described above. They’re two very different trips, and each spectacular in its own way. $40

Canopy Tour

Montezuma’s canopy tour zips right past Anamaya on a series of several steel cables. If you’re into adrenaline and action, this is an activity that you’ll love. Perfectly safe, you will find yourself zooming high above the treetops and river below at high speeds, experiencing life as only birds and arboreal creatures usually do. The tour also includes a stop at the waterfall itself, where you’ll be given time to swim. The Sun Tours office also has a small bakery with some tasty, home-made (and not exactly healthy) treats that our guests seem to enjoy. $40

Tortuga Island Adventure

Fishing, boating, scuba, and snorkeling are all staples of the Montezuma experience. We can charter a local boat to provide you with an assortment of fun activities in the Costa Rican waters. You may see whales, dolphins, or a sea turtle. Our chef will cook any fish you’re able to catch. Maybe we shouldn’t mention this, but there’s even a small shark or two sleeping in a cave at the snorkeling spot, and if you ask the guide, he’ll usually show you where it is. You can then cross of “swimming with live sharks” from your bucket list! $50

Playa Hermosa Beach Excursion

Playa Hermosa simply means “beautiful beach” in Spanish, and it’s the most gorgeous one in the area. This is a broad, flat, white sand beach, with perfect waves and a point break surf spot too. The beach is undeveloped and is picture-perfect with its leaning palms and beach almond trees. Despite its memorable beauty, Playa Hermosa is relatively uncrowded. Because it’s so flat, many of our guests love to take photos of themselves there at sunset, with their reflection in the water or wet sand, and the sunset behind them.

Testimonials

Snorkeling trip to isla tortuga.

This was such a great experience. The staff was absolutely incredible; we had such a great time. We took a boat from Montezuma to Isla Tortuga for snorkeling. We stopped along the way to check out some dolphins and see the beautiful scenery along the way. Lunch was delicious, and the cervezas hit the spot! The guys on the boat were a lot of fun and made the trip very enjoyable. I would recommend Zuma Tours for the Isla Tortuga snorkel trip, it was great!!!

Great time!

Tortuga Tour was awesome! … When we got to the island there was a very tasty lunch already waiting for us. … The tour was 9-4, a full day and worth every penny.

The car rental went extremely easy. He even gave us some recommendations on where to explore and remembered us from our last trip.

We did the water taxi/shuttle to San Jose. Super fast, super easy. A great option if you are short on time. …

All and all every single person we came into contact with at this company was friendly and helpful. Thank you to every one there!

moemoes24

Great service, fantastic tours

We used Zuma tours water taxi service to and from Montezuma Costa Rica and booked a snorkeling tour to Isla Tortuga ( from Montezuma). All around their service was first class. They were on time, the staff was helpful and friendly. It was obvious safety was a top priority. The full day snorkeling trip to Isla Tortuga included 1 1/2 hrs of snorkeling and a tasty bbque lunch. The tour was one of the highlights of my visit to Costa Rica.
