Programmes & Qualifications

Cambridge igcse business studies (0450).

  • Syllabus overview

The Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies syllabus develops learners' understanding of business activity in the public and private sectors, and the importance of innovation and change. Learners find out how the major types of business organisation are established, financed and run, and how their activities are regulated. Factors influencing business decision-making are also considered, as are the essential values of cooperation and interdependence.

Learners not only study business concepts and techniques but also enhance related skills such as numeracy and enquiry. The syllabus provides both a foundation for further study at Cambridge International A Level and an ideal preparation for the world of work.

The syllabus year refers to the year in which the examination will be taken.

Important notices

Please note that if you make an entry for the A*-G grading scale, it is not then possible to switch to the 9-1 grading scale once the entries deadline has passed. If you find that you have accidentally made an entry for the A*-G syllabus, you must withdraw and re-enter before the entries deadline.

For some subjects, we publish grade descriptions to help understand the level of performance candidates’ grades represent.

We paused the publication of grade descriptions in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the temporary changes to the awarding standard in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

As the awarding standard has now returned to the pre-pandemic standard, we are working to produce up-to-date grade descriptions for most of our general qualifications. These will be based on the awarding standards in place from June 2023 onwards.

NEWS ALERT! 🎥On Wednesday, the 10th of April, the Green Dragon Pub launches a new menu. Make sure you book a table to be one of the first ones to sample the delicious Lebanese food. So, who is the chef behind this fantastic Lebanese food? Mohamed moved to England 11 years ago. His friends call him Badreddine, so let's do the same. Despite his law degree, Badreddine's love of food took over, turning boring leftover croissants and bread into sexy sandwiches, which became very popular.Soon after arriving in London in 2014, he discovered Lebanese cuisine, which captivated his senses. He dedicated his free time to mastering the intricacies of flavours, techniques, and infusions, creating culinary delights. In 2019, he opened his first takeaway café in Islington * Irresistiball Falafel & Mezze, and most recently, he consulted in opening a restaurant in Oxford. We should be happy that he has left 'the other place' and is spoiling us with his culinary delights. In case you haven't been to the Green Dragon, it is a historic local pub centrally located in the heart of the Village of Chesterton, just a stone's throw away from Midsummer Common. With stunning riverside views and a picturesque beer garden leading down to the river. A fine array of cask ales, wines and delicious home-cooked fresh food. The Green Dragon is a stylish Cambridgeshire local bursting with character and charm. It is one of the best spots to watch all the rowing activity on the river. The May Bumps and the Town Bumps throughout June each year are the most notable.Be the first to taste Badreddine's Lebanese food and book a table for dinner on Wednesday, the 10th of April.@green_dragon2018#cbtravelguideofficial #cbtravelguide #cambridgestreetfoodvans #pizzas #streetfood #greendragoncambridge #pizzapassione #pizzatradizione #orbispizza #cambridgefoodies

TRAILFINDERS CAMBRIDGE REVIEWS

I was definitely being the 'annoying customer', but Mike was super helpful and patient every time I came back with another request/change/question. He was able to match a lower price we found which was really impressive, and communication with him was excellent - he always replied quickly. We're thrilled to have finally booked a VERY delayed holiday. Thanks Mike!
Tomas is extremely knowledgeable and helpful and helped us plan a memorable holiday to New Zealand. Since booking with the company (at very reasonable prices for a month long holiday including all flights, car hire and excursions) he had kept in touch and answered any queries we might have. I would have no hesitation in using the company, and especially Tomas, again.
Went in to find costs and ideas for honeymoon. Tomos Cross was very helpful, friendly and above all so educational about everything we asked! He exceeded our expectations and made us feel so calm and assured in the process. Thank you so much Tomos for being so amazing!

TUI HOLIDAY STORE REVIEWS

I wanted to book a trip I'd found online, but wanted the reassurance of speaking to someone in store first. Emma was very helpful, went through the details with me and matched the online price I'd found. She was very patient with my questions and sent information through so I could check at home and then came back the next day to finalise the booking. Definitely recommend the personal touch for making a big investment in a holiday booking - thanks!
Went to book a cruise and spoke to a lovely lady called Emma. We wanted to go on a carribean cruise and wanted to include a stay in Barbados, Emma, was very knowledgeable about the island, and really sold it to me. She even matched the on line price for me, went over everything to make sure I had what I wanted. All in all a very pleasant experience actually booking in store rather than on line. I will definitely be booking my next trip in store.
Had a great experience at TUI Cambridge. Lily was so helpful. I walked in so confused and left with so much information. She kept on checking daily if I was happy with the holiday she sent over or if I wanted to look for other hotels. The service is amazing Thank You.

The one thing you'll want to do is the only thing not to do while driving during solar eclipse

bs travel cambridge

The 2024 solar eclipse will shroud much of the United States in darkness on Monday, leaving many people to wonder: Is it safe to drive during the celestial event?

We know Americans should wear certified eclipse glasses when looking directly at the eclipse. And millions of Americans are in the eclipse's path of totality , the moment that occurs when the moon completely blocks the sun's light from reaching us. During totality, the eclipse can be viewed with the naked eye.

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path. If you plan to drive during this time, you may not only have to contend with traffic , but need to take steps to stay safe.

Here's what to know about driving during the eclipse.

Where to get free solar eclipse glasses: Libraries, Warby Parker and more giving glasses away

Is it safe to drive during an eclipse?

It's safe to drive during an eclipse as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road if they are operating a car during the total solar eclipse.

"Anyone operating a vehicle should not be attempting to look up at the sky during the eclipse – their eyes should be on the road," said Aixa Diaz, a spokeswoman from AAA.

The automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the total eclipse to "find a safe place to park (not on the side of a road or highway) away from other traffic and then wear your eclipse glasses," Diaz said.

Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving

It should go without saying, but authorities are also reminding people to not drive while wearing eclipse glasses .

The Missouri and Texas departments of transportation are both advising drivers to not wear eclipse glasses during the natural phenomenon and to focus on the road.

"Do not wear eclipse glasses while driving," reads a list of safety tips from the Texas department. Thousands people are expected to drive to towns along the path of totality, including Dallas, ahead of the eclipse.

Several state transportation departments  released similar warnings  ahead of the 2017 total solar eclipse. Wyoming's, for example, warned people traveling to the state about how they wouldn't be able to see the road with solar eclipse glasses on.

"When the glasses are worn, a person shouldn’t be able to see anything except the solar eclipse, which is why it is unsafe for a person to wear them when driving," the warning reads.

"Eclipse glasses are for eclipse viewing, not driving. They shouldn’t be treated like normal sunglasses," Diaz said.

Train strikes in April and May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, also mean some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

Monday 8 April 2024 06:40, UK

bs travel cambridge

Drivers at 16 rail companies have started a fresh wave of strikes, plus overtime bans, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay and will take place across April and May.

Tube strikes planned for April and May have been called off.

In an "entirely separate dispute", ASLEF members will also strike and refuse to do overtime at LNER on specific dates in April "because of the company's failure to adhere to the agreed bargaining machinery", the union said.

LNER's alleged failure to adhere to bargaining machinery refers to it using managers to drive trains on strike days.

People are advised to check before they travel.

Here's what's happening when:

Rail strike dates

Friday 5 April

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, West Midlands Trains, and CrossCountry.

Saturday 6 April

Strikes will affect Chiltern, GWR, LNER, Northern, and TransPennine Trains.

Monday 8 April

Strikes will affect Greater Anglia, c2c, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express, South Western Railway main line and depot drivers, and SWR Island Line.

Overtime ban dates

Thursday 4 April

Tuesday 9 April

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

LNER action dates

Members will strike on Saturday 20 April and refuse to work non-contractual overtime from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 April .

Why are the strikes happening?

ASLEF says the LNER strikes are because of "the company's persistent failure to comply with existing agreements".

Nigel Roebuck, an ASLEF organiser in the northeast, said the operator had been trying to get "every driver manager and driver instructor to work on strike days".

A spokesperson said: "LNER has used managers - paid £500 a shift - to drive trains on strike days and, after the expiry of the last non-contractual overtime agreement, on most days of the week now.

"There is no agreement in place for management to drive services on mainline infrastructure.

"It results in branch line services - such as Lincoln, Skipton, and Harrogate - being cancelled because of a lack of route knowledge and means virtually no driver training is being done."

Mick Whelan, ASLEF general secretary, said of the rail strikes : "Last month, when we announced renewed mandates for industrial action, because under the Tories' draconian anti-union laws we have to ballot our members every six months, we called on the train companies, and the government, to come to the table for meaningful talks to negotiate a new pay deal for train drivers who have not had an increase in salary since 2019.

"Our members voted overwhelmingly - yet again - for strike action."

A Rail Delivery Group spokesperson said: "Nobody wins when industrial action impacts people's lives and livelihoods, and we will work hard to minimise any disruption to our passengers.

"We want to resolve this dispute, but the ASLEF leadership need to recognise that hard-pressed taxpayers are continuing to contribute an extra £54m a week just to keep services running post-COVID.

"We continue to seek an agreement with the ASLEF leadership and remain open to talks to find a solution to this dispute."

When the strikes on the London Underground were announced, Finn Brennan, ASLEF's full-time organiser on the network, said in a statement: "ASLEF Tube train drivers will strike in April and May in a long-running dispute over London Underground's failure to give assurances that changes to our members' terms and conditions will not be imposed without agreement and that all existing agreements will be honoured.

"Despite a previous commitment to withdraw plans for massive changes to drivers' working conditions, London Underground management has established a full-time team of managers preparing to impose their plans.

Sadiq Khan said they had been called off after "talking and engaging with transport staff and trade unions rather than working against them".
