How to Plan a Successful Campus Tour of Boston’s Top Colleges

Each year, we partner with schools and community organizations around Massachusetts to plan campus tours for their students. They receive quality transportation, professional drivers, and attentive customer service.

This year, we’ve gone one step further to make your trip run even smoother. We talked to five of Boston ’s top colleges to learn everything there is to know about group tours on their campuses.

Boston University

Overlooking the Charles River, Boston University’s campus is home to nearly 18,000 students. With a student to faculty ratio of 10-to-1, the school offers students a highly-personalized education.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person on-campus tours are suspended. For future reference, the university welcomes groups of 10 to 50 students to schedule a tour by filling out their request form or by calling admissions at 617-353-2300 . Group tours are conducted by a current BU student and are available for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors only. Schedule your visit at least three weeks in advance to ensure availability.

Your bus driver can drop students off outside the visitor’s center at 233 Bay State Road. Though the university doesn’t have guest bus parking on campus, your driver can park off-campus and meet you back at the visitor center at the end of the tour.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge to learn about its prestigious academic programs, admissions process, and campus life. Students who are interested in science, engineering, and research will especially benefit from visiting their campus.

On-campus tours are suspended due to the global pandemic, but you can plan and schedule a self-guided tour for your group. For future reference, when you book a visit, your students will receive a 75-minute tour which includes the Stratton Student Center, Zesiger Athletic Center, and Kresge Auditorium.

MIT will waive the tour fees it’s booked by a teacher or school counselor. There are specific times of the year when campus visits can not be accommodated, so read their guidelines carefully before requesting a date.

At 84 Massachusetts Avenue, your driver can safely let students off the bus. When you partner with a company like GOGO Charters , you won’t have to worry about finding parking. We’ll ensure that your driver knows where to park so that you can focus on your upcoming trip.

Harvard University

Harvard is one of the top Ivy League schools in the country and typically has tours available for groups from 15 to 100 participants. However, due to the global pandemic, all public and private campus tours are suspended.

For future reference, you can schedule a tour in advance through the Harvard University Visitor Center. Once you arrive in Cambridge, ask your driver to drop students off at Mt. Auburn Street between Holyoke Street and Plympton Street. Tours begin at the Harvard Information Center and are led by current students.

Your guide will use their personal experience at Harvard to teach students what to expect. They’ll also be available to answer questions about housing, admissions, financial aid, extracurricular activities, and more.

Northeastern University

Students who attend Northeastern University have a unique opportunity to learn from real-world experiences. Over 90% of undergraduates complete co-op programs during their four years at the university.

High school and college transfer students can book group tours through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Request a tour at least two weeks in advance, and contact the school if your group has over 40 participants.

The tour begins at the Visitor’s Center at 40 Leon Street, and your driver can drop students off on Forsyth Street near Ruggles Station.

Groups of 10 or more participants can tour Boston College’s campus to see its beautiful Gothic architecture and learn more about the school. Schedule your tour two weeks ahead of time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

The Eagle Eye Campus Visit, which lasts two hours, includes an information session and campus tour. A current student will show participants around the school and answer any questions they may have.

The school’s staff suggests that buses unload on their lower campus, which is a short walk from their office at 140 Commonwealth Avenue. Your driver may park at Boston College’s Newton campus a mile away and return for pickup after the tour.

Boston College is located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Newton, Massachusetts. Our campus is approximately six miles west of downtown Boston. Therefore, it is important that you put the correct town and/or zip code when you are entering our address into GPS navigation or Google Maps.

Once you have parked, please remember to take your parking ticket with you so that a member of our staff can validate your parking ticket.

Visitor Parking

Visitors can use the MBTA subway system (known in Boston as the "T") to easily access campus. Traveling outbound from the center of Boston, take the B train on the MBTA Green Line. Boston College is the final stop on the B train.

Once you exit the T, cross to the other side of Commonwealth Avenue and walk uphill to the right. There you will find the Main Gate on your left. Enter campus and walk down Linden Lane. Continue to Gasson Hall (the tower building) straight ahead.

Green Line Info

• From points North & south:  Take Interstate 95 (Route 128) to Exit 24 (Route 30). Proceed east on Route 30, also known as Commonwealth Avenue, and follow for about five miles to Boston College. 
• From points West:  Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90) to Exit 17. At the first set of lights after the exit ramp, take a right onto Centre Street. Follow Centre Street to the fourth set of lights, and turn left onto Commonwealth Avenue. Follow Commonwealth Avenue 1-1/2 miles to Boston College. 
• From downtown Boston:  Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90) to Exit 17. Take a left over the bridge after passing the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Take the first right onto Centre Street. Follow above directions from Centre Street.

• Beacon St. Garage: Use the intersection of Beacon and Chestnut Hill Drive, Brighton, MA 02135. Head away from the reservoir (west) on Beacon Street and the Beacon Street garage will be on your right.
• Commonwealth Ave. Garage: Use the intersection of St. Thomas More Road and Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467. From St. Thomas More Road, take Campanella Way to the Commonwealth Avenue Garage.
• Main gate: Use 140 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA. Please note that parking is extremely limited on Middle Campus. We strongly encourage you to park in one of the two parking garages.

Please note: If you are using Apple Maps or Siri on an iPhone to get to campus, please be sure to type in/speak the address "140 Commonwealth Avenue, Chestnut Hill, MA." Simply typing or saying "Boston College" may not bring you to our main campus.

If taking an Uber, Lyft or other similar service to Boston College, use the address 140 Beacon Street, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467 for drop off at Gasson Hall.

5 Tips for Group Tours of Boston Colleges

If you’re planning to tour a college campus in the Boston area, there are many factors to consider before you step foot in the city. Boston boasts the oldest subway system in the United States: the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority , locally known as the “T.” This five-line system includes stops near many of the city’s major campuses, and once settled into campus life, many Boston students use it to get to and from class.

However, navigating a public transportation system as robust as Boston’s can be tedious when you’re unfamiliar with the city, and with a large group of touring students, someone is bound to get lost. Plan ahead with a private minibus rental and make sure no one gets left behind. Minibuses are the perfect vehicles for transporting large groups in city centers like Boston, because their compact size allows your bus driver to easily navigate busy streets. At the end of the day, private bus travel costs less per person than average public transportation or rideshare fare, which reduces the overall cost of your Boston trip. In all, booking your transportation beforehand is a safer option for large groups that are new to the area.

2.       Plan Campus Tours Well in Advance

While most Boston colleges and universities are open to the public, many institutions have limitations and guidelines when it comes to tour groups. For example, Boston College only offers tours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Whereas, Massachusetts Institution of Technology (MIT) can only accommodate campus tours during specific times of the year, and Boston University tours are available for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors only.

As a general rule of thumb, contact the colleges you plan to visit at least three weeks in advance to check availability and schedule your campus tour. Planning a visit over multiple days can ensure your students and chaperones have enough time to fully explore each location on the itinerary.

3.       Ask About Tour Fee Discounts

Some institutions offer to waive tour registration fees for large tour groups or even offer free tours. In particular, Harvard offers free tours, and MIT waives tour fees booked by an educator or school counselor. It is recommended to inquire about discounts like these when booking your Boston campus tours, because they can save you money in the long run.

4.     Coordinate Parking Before You Go

As with any major city, parking in and around Boston’s colleges is limited, and finding adequate spaces can be stressful. Boston University, for instance, doesn’t offer guest bus parking on campus, which is an important fact to consider when visiting the university for a group tour. Instead, your bus driver would most likely need to drop off students outside the BU visitor’s center, park off-campus , and meet you back at the visitor center at the end of the tour. Before your trip, your professional driver can arrange specific pickup and dropoff points around any of Boston’s campuses. In other words, with a private bus rental, all you need to worry about is making sure your tour group knows where and when to meet up at each campus.

5.      Explore Local Boston Culture

Visiting Boston Area Colleges

Even with an abundance of online college information, nothing beats a personal visit.  During a campus visit you can personally experience the details that make a college special and gauge if it might be a good fit for you.  It can also be very helpful when trying to decide between different colleges.  Even better,  college visits can actually increase your chances of being accepted.  For example, Tufts University includes into their acceptance criteria wether an applicant has actually visited the school or just dropped an application.

To get the most benefit from a visit,  make sure you do a thorough college research online and build a list of potential colleges you are considering.  From that list you can then come up with a visiting plan.

Best Times to Visit Boston Area Colleges

Visiting during Summer vacation before the Senior year is popular because it does not interfere with school and can be combined with summer vacation travel.  Since many colleges start in mid August,  you may want to visit during that time so you can see  the school in action.  Visiting earlier in the summer can work too but of course there will be fewer or no students present.

Fall is a great time to visit Boston colleges. Not just is the weather amazing but the Fall colors make each college shine. You will also find that the energy at campus is at its best.  

Many college advisors recommend visiting in Spring during your Junior year.  This is a good strategy if you plan to apply for Early Decision in Fall.  Of course it requires your college research to be done early.

Best Days to Visit Boston Area Colleges

Each College has their own time schedule for visiting and some are open seven days a week others only a few days a week.  Generally, weekends are not a good time to visit as colleges operate on a weekend schedule.  Many Boston colleges offer Monday through Friday for visits but sometimes Friday is not the best day to visit, as students get ready for the weekend.   Make sure you don’t visit during Holidays or special exam days.  Checking with Colleges is best before you plan a visit. 

Visiting Multiple Colleges

Visiting multiple colleges on the same trip is a great idea.  Grouping them by general location will make that easier.  In the table below,  you will see the genral location of each school.

Metro Center:   This indicates that you can reach it via the Subway (called the T) .

Metro North, West and South: Best visited by car, Uber or in some cases Commuter Rail.

Because we fully customize every itinerary, we can offer tours to any and every age group.

Is participation in Zoni educational tours exclusive to school students?

No, Zoni educational tours are not limited to school students alone. They can be arranged for college students, adult learners, faith-based organizations, community-based organizations, language organizations, home-school co-ops, cultural schools/organizations, businesses, or individuals with an interest in acquiring knowledge and exploring new environments.

Are Zoni Tours' educational programs suitable for homeschoolers or smaller groups?

Absolutely. We cater to various group sizes, including homeschoolers, with fully customizable itineraries.

Is there a minimum or maximum group size required for booking?

We require a minimum of ten paying passengers per group. We have no maximum group size.

How far in advance should I start planning my trip to secure our desired date and destination?

Start as soon as possible.

Planning should begin as soon as possible. International travel is typically planned 12-18 months before departure.

Will there be adult supervision throughout the trip?

Zoni Educational travel tours have trained Tour Managers and Tour Leaders accompanying the group. For domestic travel there will be one Tour Leader for every 10 students and for international travel, there will be one Tour Leader for every 6 students.

What’s the difference between a Tour Manager and a Tour Leader?

One comes from your organization and the other comes from Zoni Tours.

The Tour Leader is a representative from your school. The Tour Manager is affiliated with Zoni Tours and is well versed in the destinations visited.

Do chaperones/tour leaders travel for free?

Yes, for domestic travel we offer one free tour leader per ten paying passengers. For international travel, we offer one free tour leader per six paying passengers.

What destinations do you visit?

Destinations around the world.

The itineraries listed on our website include examples of destinations that we travel to, but we are happy to customize a tour of any destination you wish to visit.

What are the durations of your tours?

While many of our domestic tours are two-night/three-day itineraries, we can customize a tour for any desired length of time.

Do you provide all transportation, or do we need to arrange it separately?

We provide transportation most of the time.

Your transportation needs will be provided by Zoni Tours, unless otherwise noted in your proposal.

What student details will need to be collected?

Only the information necessary for safe travel.

Full names, dates of birth, emergency contacts, dietary restrictions, and any other relevant information needed for your itinerary.

Who is responsible for student information while traveling?

Students and Tour Leaders.

Students and tour leaders will be responsible for securing traveler documents and information. Zoni will keep digital copies of passports and visas for international travel in case of emergency.

Will we have to complete waivers?

All forms are signed at registration along with terms and conditions. Documentation required by your school or organization may vary.

Can I choose my flight schedule?

No. Group travel is secured under one booking.

Can I choose my seat?

No, seats will be assigned at the time of booking.

Will we all be seated together on the plane?

While not guaranteed, Zoni Tours will do everything possible to accommodate this request.

Can I change my flights to meet family/friends at the end of the trip?

Flight changes are available at your own expense, subject to group leaders' approval.

Are your tours wheelchair accessible or suitable for individuals with special needs?

Zoni Tours will accommodate special needs per ADA and section 504. We can secure accommodations in motorcoaches, hotels, and most eateries. However, elements of certain itineraries are not accessible to wheelchairs and other devices. Please make your Educational Group Tour Coordinator aware of any special needs when you begin your travel planning.

March Madness is racing toward the national championship game.

The beloved annual tradition that is the NCAA Tournament opened with bracket busters and overnight stars — Oakland’s Jack Gohlke and Oregon’s Jermaine Couisnard , anyone? — emerging out of nowhere.

Who will win it all? UConn is the No. 1 overall seed and an overwhelming pick to claim a sixth overall title and become the first team to repeat as NCAA champion since Florida in 2006-07. The only other top seed still alive going into Saturday’s Final Four is Purdue.

Last year’s Final Four, remember, included two 5 seeds (Miami and San Diego State), the fourth-seeded Huskies and 9 seed Florida Atlantic. This year is a bit more traditional — except for 11-seed North Carolina State crashing the party.

The Final Four

1 UConn vs. 4 Alabama (8:49 p.m. Eastern, Saturday). The question before the tourney was who could stop the Huskies and that question hasn’t changed at all as UConn has won its NCAA games by 39, 17, 30 and 25 points. Next up: the Crimson Tide. Alabama hit 16 3-pointers to advance over Clemson and that came after the Tide eliminated top-seeded North Carolina.

1 Purdue vs 11 N.C. State (6:09 p.m. Eastern, Saturday). The Boilermakers have advanced behind big man Zach Edey, who dropped 40 points in his last game to help eliminate Tennessee. The 7-foot-4, 300-pound Edey and his strong supporting cast will face a Wolfpack team that has a standout big man of its own: D.J. Burns Jr., who is 6-9 and 275 pounds. N.C. State hasn’t made it this far since its 1983 championship team coached by the late Jim Valvano.

How to watch

Every game of the men’s tournament will be aired — here is a schedule — either on CBS, TBS, TNT or TruTV and their digital platforms, including Paramount+. TBS will handle the Final Four and national title game this year. The NCAA is streaming games via its March Madness Live option.

Betting guide

The betting favorite is UConn, followed by Purdue, Alabama and N.C. State, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

When are the games?

The Final Four is in Glendale, Arizona, on Saturday, April 6, with the championship game the night of Monday, April 8.

March Madness as we know it could be on the way out amid all the changes in college athletics. There is a lot of talk about expanding the tournament beyond 68 teams, a format that’s been in place since 2011.

For now, enjoy the show and if it seems like everyone can score, there is a reason. Offense has evolved. Just take a look at UConn.

Everyone loves those buzzer beaters and late-game winners. A lot of the guys who hit those last year came back for more. Edey was back too, though his basketball future after Purdue is murky.

If you like your team this season, take a good look. The transfer portal and the allure of NIL deals mean coaches have to worry about their rosters even amid March Madness.

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Overall, Baltimore was the 17th biggest port in the United States in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The bridge collapse brought marine traffic there to a standstill, with seven cargo or tanker ships stranded in the harbor as of Tuesday afternoon.

Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency for Maryland and said that his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary. The White House issued a statement saying that President Biden had been briefed on the collapse.

The pga tour stays in texas this week for one last tune up before the masters.

Just four rounds stand between players and the first major championship of the season. The 2024 Texas Open will serve as the final tune up for some of the world's best as they search for form ahead of the Masters. While many of the top names in the field have already booked their trips to Augusta National, the Texas Open will grant one final spot in the field should a winner without an invitation emerge.

Not needing to worry about this is world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, who has experienced a somewhat tumultuous season up to this point. A bit more erratic with his long game than what we are used to, McIlroy is without a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour and has struggled to string four rounds together. McIlroy hopes to find whatever this missing link may be at TPC San Antonio, where he last played in 2022. McIlroy missed the cut that week, but it served as a good preparation; he finished runner-up at the Masters a week later. 

Also factoring in Masters past are champions such as Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama, who are heading in opposite directions in terms of form. Matsuyama, a winner at the Genesis Invitational, looks much like the man who donned the green jacket in 2021. Spieth, meanwhile, has struggled with consistency. Fresh off back-to-back missed cuts at the Players Championship and Valspar Championship, Spieth is in need of some strong play leading into the Masters. 

Collin Morikawa finds himself in a similar position with cold iron play, while players such as Max Homa, Matt FItzpatrick Ludvig Aberg, Tommy Fleetwood and Brian Harman appear keen on entering the winner's circle.
