Egypt is a country that tops the bucket-list country for many travelers. It’s a country filled with incredible relics of ancient history , from the Pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza, and offers tons of incredible activities for travelers of all walks of life. Floating down the Nile River on a traditional felucca, exploring the tombs of Tutankhamen and other pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings, snorkeling and diving in the coral fantasyland of the Red Sea — there’s just so many amazing parts of Egypt to amaze and enthrall you.

These days, Egypt is a destination many travelers shy away from. Given that there have been some terrorist attacks targeting tourists over the last couple of decades and that people are still wary of the changes in government since the Arab Spring, those concerns are understandable.

However, since 2017, tourism numbers have begun to increase again. In fact, they are growing so fast they might hit an all-time record in 2019 or 2020.

Things have been changing for the better in Egypt and it’s now a safe country to visit for the intrepid traveler. That means it’s time to start planning your dream trip to this diverse and historic country.

While I am a huge fan of solo travel , distances between the most popular sights in Egypt are pretty far. You can expect to spend a full day or night traveling by road or rail between Cairo and Luxor, for example, so joining an organized tour can help you make the most of your time.

And it can also save you some money, too!

Tours in Egypt often work out to be cheaper than trying to put together your own trip as some will include domestic airfare for prices cheaper than you’ll be able to get on your own.

Taking a tour with a reputable company also ensures that you’ll have safe detours with someone who really knows the lay of the land and will keep you informed of any risks. Knowledgeable tour guides also make for a more interesting trip — which is why tours in Egypt are so popular.

Here is a list of the best tour companies in Egypt, offering everything from day trips around Cairo to multiday tours around the country:

1. Intrepid

Intrepid is one of my favorite tour companies in the world.

I’ve been on a handful of their tours over the years to destinations all around the world and have yet to be disappointed. Their local guides provide invaluable insight and they are dedicated to making environmentally friendly choices too.

And the company just hires really awesome people too.

In Egypt, Intrepid has tours that range between eight and fifteen days. To be able to see enough in just eight days, they fly you between Cairo and the south, so the cheaper trip is actually the 15-day one, which uses a mix of bus, boat, and train travel, starting around $1,200 USD. Intrepid also has some specialized offerings, with a nine-day trip for travelers aged 18–29, trips especially for families, and also one just for solo travelers.

If you’re keen to explore beyond Egypt, Intrepid also offers a range of longer tours that take in Jordan , Israel , and Palestine as well.

2. Memphis Tours

One of the first tour companies in Egypt, Memphis Tours has been around since 1955. It offers a huge variety of tours – from half- or full-day tours in Cairo or Alexandria to snorkeling or camel-riding trips out of resort destinations like Sharm el-Sheikh, ranging between $35 and $90 USD per person.

They also offer a selection of cruises both on the Nile and on Lake Nasser. The popular Luxor-to-Aswan trip along the Nile can be made in a variety of pretty luxurious ships; prices are around $500 USD per person for a four-day trip.

Memphis Tours also offer fully organized multi-day trips that last between 3–15 days. Many of these take in the key sights, like the Pyramids, a Nile cruise, and the Luxor and Karnak Temples, and typically fly you back to Cairo. The costs vary depending on the extra activities involved but are pretty reasonable: small group tours covering the main sights from Cairo to Luxor start at $1,100 USD. They also offer some specialized tours, such as one specifically designed to accommodate wheelchair users.

3. Look at Egypt Tours

Look at Egypt Tours is another local company that offers both day and multiday tours. It specializes in having knowledgeable guides that make the history of Egypt really come alive, giving incredible insight into modern-day Egyptian life as well.

The company also has a sense of social responsibility too, using locally owned restaurants and hotels on all trips and hiring guides from communities throughout the country.

Look at Egypt Tours runs a variety of day trips out of the main centers, including Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, and Sharm el-Sheikh, ranging in cost between $50 and $150 USD per person, depending on the destination and the group size.

Multi-day tours include lots of options too; these last around 8–10 days and cost between $1,500 and $2,000 USD. There are also some specialized trips, like a two-week archaeological tour, the perfect choice for any history buffs (or Indiana Jones fans!).

4. On the Go Tours

On the Go Tours has been running tours to a variety of countries for a couple of decades now, but it all started in Egypt, where the two founders met. The company focuses on sustainable travel and supports local communities, and it hires local guides who have studied Egyptology at a college level as well.

In Egypt, they run several great-value group tours, like an eight-day trip from Cairo to Luxor for $400 USD, which includes the Pyramids of Giza, the incredible Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the temples at Luxor, a two-night felucca cruise on the Nile, a visit to the Valley of the Kings, and more. Accommodations are more budget-oriented than many other tour companies, making this a great option for backpackers.

If your timing and budget are more flexible, you might also take a look at some of On the Go’s festival tours, timed to celebrations like the Abu Simbel Sun Festival or the King Ramses Sun Festival. These tours are typically around ten days long and range between $1,600 and $2,800 USD per person, depending on whether they include internal flights.

5. Jakada Tours Egypt

Jakada Tours is a smaller company that offers private tours as well as group trips with a focus on budget mid-range travel.

Trips covering many of Egypt’s highlights and lasting between seven and ten days range from $600 to $1,000 USD. If you’re on your second trip to Egypt or have some extra time, Jakada also offers a range of more unusual tours, like spending time at the Cairo camel market!

The company also makes sure its guides are really knowledgeable, not just about ancient history but modern Egyptian culture too, as well as all the best local tips and tricks to help you make the most out of your stay.

6. Exodus Travels

Exodus offers trips worldwide and has a reputable social conscience; they aim to give back to the local communities they are a part of. In Egypt, they support Animal Care in Egypt (ACE), and its tours often include an option to visit the charity’s facility.

7. Beyond the Nile Tours

Beyond the Nile Tours is another Egypt-based tour company using local, highly educated guides with lots of historical and cultural knowledge. It offers three tours, ranging between eight days and two weeks in length; on all of them, you can be flexible with your budget, as some activities, like a balloon ride over the Pyramids ($100 USD), are optional.

All these tours kick off in Cairo with a full day exploring what we all dream of seeing — the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphnix — along with the Egyptian Museum to put the history into context. Then you’re flown down to Luxor and cruise from there to the Valley of the Kings, among other places. On the longer trips, you can choose to travel back north more slowly, or you can include several days relaxing at a Red Sea resort. Tour prices range from $1,200 to $1,400 USD per person, with some additional costs for extra activities.

As much as I love solo travel , planning a trip to Egypt is much easier with a tour company. While you probably know that you want to see the Pyramids, the Nile, and other historical sites, getting around is not that easy to organize in advance, so it’s good to have the local knowledge of Egyptian guides to make sure you’re both safe and getting the most out of your trip.

So whether you’re after a short tour hitting the highlights of Egypt in a week or have more time to explore the country a little more slowly or even spend some time relaxing at the Red Sea, you’ll find a tour company to help you out.

Travel was smooth, the ruins/temples/pyramids/museums we saw were breathtaking, the service was great, and our tour guides (Hassan and Mohammed) were amazing, friendly, and very informative. This vacation was definitely one of the most memorable vacations we’ve ever taken. I highly recommend using tour radar!! 10 stars if possible!!

A dream trip with fantastic temple tours and a superb Nile River cruise. Exceptional service from Vacations To Go staff, including Michael's infectious humor during airport pickup and the highly knowledgeable Egyptologist Maged Max as our guide, added immense value. The side trip to Alexandria was excellent, with a delicious lunch at The Fish Market restaurant on the bay. Good food and a tour group of 15 people ensured a comfortable experience.

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Intra-Flights Included

It was good. In the beginning, we had some issues with the lack of communication in El Cairo. We chose the sleeping train option from El Cairo to Luxor (included in the tour) but we spent 3-4 hours sitting in the train station when we could have done anything else. Also, we didn't know that the train didn't have showers and we were supposed to start the tour day in Luxor as soon as we arrived.... so if you are choosing the sleeping train option consider this, also that you share the bathroom with the people in the same wagon. Once we arrived on the cruise, everything went smoothly. The tour guide always took care of us, gave us tips, and explained everything well. The cruise was overall good, they gave you what you paid for. I do recommend the tour!

THIS is the Egyptian tour of all tours! Our guide King Mina is your missing puzzle - so informative & fun to be around, SO many laughs had and SO much learnt. He went absolutely above and beyond to accommodate and make sure we didn’t go without! Cannot recommend enough, there isn’t one fault - from the converse prior to the tour start, the accommodation, food, service, transfers and all until the very end! A real home away from home! This is your sign to just BOOK IT - thank you expat!!!

A great tour. Very well organised and ran smoothly when we did come across problems our wonderful guide Anas fixed them quickly. Good sized groups and able to do as much or as little of the itinerary as we wished.

Egypt: Boats & Bazaars

This was my first G Adventures tour (previously having stuck with Contiki and TravelTalk) and I have to say this thoroughly impressed me - the itinerary was well thought out and executed well, all of the inclusions were decent (nothing worse than an included activity being a waste of time) and the options extra's were a 100% worth it. Massive shout out to our CEO for the trip Medo who was one of the best guides I've had across 10+ tours now... he was in great spirits throughout the early mornings and the late evenings, and his knowledge was beyond extensive! He was coming off the back off 2 months continuous trips but you wouldn't know it from his enthusiasm and amazing attitude. The only negative for anyone interested in Egypt... be prepared for the Wifi to not work in any hotel you enter, best tip is to buy a SIM at the airport and use that instead... I think the majority of our had done that by the end as it was so bad in the hotels we were in!

10-Day Ancient Egypt Tour with Nile Cruise

Great service from landing pick up to drop off back at Cairo airport. Everything ran like clockwork and Michael was happy to slightly adjust one day's schedule to suit us. Michel and Monty our guides were fantastic, I didn't know that much out ancient Egypt before the trip but they taught us so much with real passion for their history that I now feel like an expert. I would recommend doing the balloon ride extra over the Valley of the Kings at dawn it gave such an appreciation of the amount of tombs and temples there.

The Intrepid tour and our guide was excellent! However, I booked my tour through TourRadar, and TourRadar was a disaster from beginning to end, with very slow responses to any questions. I received my voucher only one week before departure, and they did not pass over the information to Intrepid about my late arrival on the opening day. Originally, I was booked via TourRadar on a different tour with a different company, but this was cancelled by TourRadar only 6 weeks before departure and long after confirmation was given and I had booked my flight tickets. So it was pure luck that Intrepid had a tour on the same dates.

We had a wonderful time. Drivers and guides were very helpful. Always felt safe and they were there with any answers we had a question about.

What people love about Egypt Tours

Really enjoyed being in a small group instead of a traditional large group and our guide was great. This was a fast, hit-the-high points type of tour which is what we wanted; but, didn't really get to spend too much time at any one place. Didn't care for the hotel we were based out of - the rooms didn't have opaque walls between the bedroom and bathroom, just glass that was partly translucent; and, the hotel was a long ways away from everything.

A variety of experiences both day and night, cruise up the Nile was great, gravity resort was superb, pyramids awesome, lots of temples

This was an amazing and truly a once-in-a-lifetime trip. It was incredible to see all the ancient temples, tombs, and of course the Pyramids of Giza in one holiday. Despite some slightly frustrating moments in Cairo which could have been better organised, from the moment we got to Aswan, in the care of our guide, Anas, the rest of the trip was perfect. Anas was so knowledgeable and was always sharing his wisdom with us, whilst also being very accommodating of the whole group with a great sense of humour as well. 100% would recommend this to anyone.

High End Journeys is a boutique luxury travel agency, started by Egyptologists and best friends, Ahmed Aziz and Ramez Salama. Both share a passion for travel and draw on their combined industry experience of 34 years to deliver a personalized itinerary for their guests. They work with a singular aim in mind - to create unforgettable memories for every traveler.

Together we have over 30 years of experience in the Luxury Tour industry in Egypt, directing tours with one of the leading companies in the luxury market around the world.

While we value the comfort and amenities existing luxury tours offer, we both have come to realize that too often these luxury tours were missing a real human connection - and especially an opportunity to connect with the people of Egypt and the valuable sites and experiences that are off the well-beaten track of every other luxury tour.

Our vision was to create a tour experience that offered all of the comfort and standards that one has come to expect from over 100 years of luxury tours in Egypt, but with a modern spin that caters to the traveler committed to experiencing the hidden gems of Egypt outside of the typical tourist bubble.

The more we imagined what a new generation of luxury touring could become, the more we realized we were uniquely qualified to offer those experiences to our clients.

Five years ago, while both directing on the same luxury cruise on the Nile, we had one especially enthusiastic client who encouraged us out of his own experience as an entrepreneur and businessman, to make our dream a reality today while we were young and positioned to become leaders in changing the luxury tour market in Egypt into the future.

So we took that leap of faith in 2016 and established High End Journeys in 2017. Come along with us as we take you off the beaten path to experience the future of travel in Egypt.

Meet the founders

Ahmed Aziz and Ramez Salama first met each other while studying at the School of Egyptology. They are both Egyptologists and have been helping travelers since 2003, to discover the authentic side of their country. They are also former employees to some of the best luxury tour operators in the world. They started High End Journeys together in 2016 - curating journeys and sharing insider stories that “wow” their guests.

Ahmed Aziz is a professional Egyptologist. He graduated in 2003 from the Faculty of Tourism & Hotels, Cairo University with a Bachelor’s degree in Egyptology. He has personally guided a host of high-end clients throughout Egypt, including Hollywood stars, distinguished politicians and the world’s biggest businessmen. He has been married since 2006 and is a father of one. He is a former member of the Egyptian national water polo team. He is an Ironman triathlete and endurance sports enthusiast. He has also managed hospitality and travel arrangements at some of Egypt’s top sporting events.

RAMEZ SALAMA

Ramez Salama's love and passion for his country and its amazing history led him to study Egyptology from Helwan University. He has guided a selection of leading diplomats, foreign businessmen, and world-famous musicians. He loves meeting people from different countries and explore their cultures. He has traveled to over fifteen countries - from the Great Wall of China to the game parks of Eastern Africa. He has seen the great castles of Europe, and hiked across the outstanding nature trails of North America. Ramez delivers lectures on Egyptian history and heritage at American churches and schools – particularly in Kansas, Texas, and California. He also serves as a guest lecturer on Windstar Cruise Line. Ramez’s area of expertise is Pharaonic Egypt, and he takes pleasure in leading clients around the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Mahmoud Fekery

Mahmoud Fekery Born and raised in Monufia, a small town near Cairo, he earned a degree in Tourism and Hospitality from Cairo university in 2006. His love and passion for his job has made him excel in what he does. He is a very detailed oriented. He is responsible for all the logistics of the tour on ground. Our travelers always feel in love with him and that is why he gained the title "The Guardian Angel"

Hala El Sayeed

Hala El Sayeed is born and raised in Cairo. She earned her degree in Political Science from the American university in Cairo back in 1987. Her love and passion for Egyptian history led her to study Egyptology and guide tours from 1993. Hala holds a Master degree in Islamic Art. Hala is always eager to introduce Egypt in its glorious past, educate her guests on the contemporary and modern history of Egypt, explaining the different traditions and cultures that form the Egyptian character.

Ola Zayed is an Egyptologist guide. She has been in business for the past 26 years. Ola has a wide experience working with American guests from university alumni associations such as Duke, Yale, Virginia, Maryland and a lot more. She excels in giving lectures about ancient and modern Egypt where her strength is in delivering the picture of the Egyptian life through her own eyes as an Arab-Egyptian woman who roamed the world.

Assem Omar born and raised in Alexandria, he has been a licensed Egyptologist for over 28 years. Assem’s passion in life is guiding travelers who would like to explore and learn in depth about Egypt’s amazing culture & wonderful traditions. It is always his pleasure to meet new people who share his passion and enthusiasm towards history & ancient monuments.
